- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to the Tabernacle Talk podcast.
- 0:18I'm your host Brian Self. And today we are in Isaiah
- 0:21chapter 14 and verses 24 through 32.
- 0:27So last episode we looked at the downfall of Babylon and how it
- 0:32kind of mirrors the pride and the fall of even Satan himself.
- 0:37And then in this episode we're going to be looking at the fall
- 0:40of Syria that is prophesied and the fall of Philistia.
- 0:45That would be the nations tribes that would have been around
- 0:51Israel and Judah that they never fully either drove out or
- 0:57defeated. That they were always still a
- 1:00thorn in the side of Israel due to the fact that they did not
- 1:05obey the Lord's command and completely drive those groups
- 1:10out. So we're going to look first in
- 1:13verse #24 and then that section on Assyria and the pronunciation
- 1:20of God's judgment against this evil nation that ends in verse
- 1:24#27 Yahweh of heaven's armies has sworn as I have purposed.
- 1:30So it will be as I've planned it.
- 1:32So it will happen. I will break Assyria in my land.
- 1:36I will tread Him down on my mountain.
- 1:39Then His yoke will be taken from them, and His burden will be
- 1:42removed from their shoulders. This is the plan prepared for
- 1:46the whole earth, and this is the hand stretched out against all
- 1:51the nations Yahweh of Heaven's armies Himself has planned.
- 1:55Therefore, who can stand in its way?
- 1:57It is His hand that is outstretched, so who can turn it
- 2:02back? I love hearing this first
- 2:05section. Yes, there is a declaration of
- 2:09judgment that takes place, but I love the why that there is a
- 2:13reason for what God is doing. And we can find that in verse
- 2:18#25 He says after he breaks Assyria and treads down this
- 2:25nation that had demolished so many other people in the ancient
- 2:29Near East, He says then His yoke will be taken from them and his
- 2:34burden will be removed from their shoulders.
- 2:37This is the plan prepared for the whole earth.
- 2:39And this is the hand stretched out against all the nations.
- 2:44That the nations of this world are by their very nature
- 2:49oppressive, that they wield the sword of justice through either
- 2:56physical violence or through financial deprivation or
- 3:03blessing. That the state, the nation's,
- 3:08use those tools in order to get people to do what they want.
- 3:13That your freedom can be taken away, you can be physically
- 3:18harmed, shot, or you can be fined heavily or have your
- 3:25resources taken from you. That those are the only tools
- 3:29that government has. And while God has government set
- 3:36up in order for some good things to take place and in order for
- 3:41some justice to happen, which is what we read in Romans 13 where
- 3:44Paul basically tells the Romans, hey, don't antagonize the
- 3:49soldiers and the Roman government because when you do
- 3:53that, you will not win. You will not succeed.
- 3:55You'll not have, if you will, a good time.
- 3:58This will result in the loss of your life.
- 4:00So therefore like like shape up, do right and the the governments
- 4:07that God allows in their most perfect circumstances punish
- 4:13evildoers and they use the sword and the power of finances in
- 4:19order to stop evildoers in their best days.
- 4:25But because nations are led by imperfect people, there will
- 4:32always be times when the nations get it wrong.
- 4:35There will be people that they wrongly kill or that they
- 4:38wrongly fine. And So what God says is there is
- 4:44coming this day first to Assyria, you know, 2627 hundred
- 4:49years ago. And there is coming a day for
- 4:53every nation when God breaks mankind's governments and he
- 4:59sets up his own perfect government with Jesus at the
- 5:02head, that there will no longer be, no longer need to be any
- 5:07distrust of the rulers that are there.
- 5:10Because the ruler is the King of kings and the Lord of Lords.
- 5:14He is the one who himself suffered injustice at the hands
- 5:19of multiple kinds of the local governments, whether you think
- 5:23about Rome crucifying him or Judea as those in leadership,
- 5:30specifically a kind of political, religious leadership
- 5:34in the Sanhedrin as they arrested Jesus and delivered him
- 5:38over to be crucified. So Jesus knows what it's like to
- 5:42have a bad government. And what God says is one day I'm
- 5:46breaking the yoke from off of you.
- 5:49The burden is removed from your shoulders and you will be able
- 5:53to live the good life. And even as we look back about
- 5:582627 hundred years, Assyria was destroyed.
- 6:03And there was, it's kind of sad because that was great for
- 6:07people and the Assyrians did atrocious things, some of which,
- 6:12like, if you're queasy, don't look up the practices of the
- 6:17Syrian Army and what they would do to different people groups.
- 6:22Yeah, if you're queasy, don't look that stuff up.
- 6:24If you are a history nut or you love even like true crime or
- 6:29something, you can look that up and you'll be like, oh wow,
- 6:32these guys were twisted and they absolutely were.
- 6:36So that was a wonderful promise that right here when Isaiah is
- 6:41prophesying it, that was future. And there was no guarantee of
- 6:45that outside of the word of God. This message that the Lord was
- 6:51giving to say the nation that is currently the most fearsome, the
- 6:57one that is constantly harassing and invading, killing,
- 7:05deporting, taxing all of the other nations around you, this
- 7:10one is actually going to fall and God is ultimately
- 7:13responsible for their fall. I want to kind of apply that
- 7:19then to us to say whatever we're most scared of.
- 7:22Realize that in the end, God wins.
- 7:25And though we might not see any way for the Lord to win in our
- 7:30difficulties, know that it will end one day, whether when He
- 7:35comes back, maybe when we die or maybe within our life.
- 7:41But in any circumstance, we will be ultimately fine as we have
- 7:47placed our faith in Jesus that whether God changes the
- 7:51circumstances in my lifetime, awesome, Praise the Lord.
- 7:55Whether when I die, I'm with the Lord and I don't have to deal
- 7:59with those troubles that I have here on earth anymore, praise
- 8:02the Lord. Or when Jesus comes back and
- 8:05makes all things right, I can rejoice in that as well.
- 8:08So whether here, there or in the air, everything is going to be
- 8:13all right. All right.
- 8:14Then verses 28 through 32, that was the section against Syria.
- 8:21And then now verses 28 through 32 is the prophecy against
- 8:26Felicia. So verse #28 in the year that
- 8:29King A has died, this pronouncement, King, don't
- 8:33rejoice all of you in Felicia, because the rod of the one who
- 8:37struck you is broken. For a Viper will come from the
- 8:41root of a snake, and from its egg comes a flying serpent.
- 8:46Then the first born of the poor will be well fed, and the
- 8:50impoverished will lie down in safety.
- 8:52But I will kill your route with hunger, and your remnant will be
- 8:56slain. Whale you gates cry out, city
- 8:59tremble with fear, all Felicia. For a cloud of dust is coming
- 9:03from the north, and there was no one missing from the invaders
- 9:06ranks. What answer will be given to the
- 9:09messengers from that nation? Yahweh has founded Zion and his
- 9:14oppressed people find refuge in her.
- 9:18So this is kind of a a packed section here.
- 9:23I want to go a little bit piece by piece through here as we have
- 9:28kind of this closing section for today.
- 9:30So verse 28, King Ahaz dies and from some of the other local
- 9:38city states of Felicia, you can think of the city of Gath where
- 9:42Goliath was from. There were a number of other
- 9:45ones that were scattered around different parts of Israel,
- 9:49especially more towards the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
- 9:53You would find more of those Philistine cities and so as
- 9:59those cities in good times for Israel or Judah, they would be
- 10:07put in check. They would need to be paying
- 10:10taxes or things over to Israel or Judah.
- 10:16But now that King Ahaz was dying, there could have been
- 10:19like a joy of like, OK, sweet, you know, who's really in charge
- 10:22over there. They're going to start fighting
- 10:23amongst themselves. And so we're going to have, you
- 10:26know, just a nice easy time of it and our our, you know,
- 10:31economy or whatever is going to be more free.
- 10:34But what the Lord prophecies is, or what the Lord tells Isaiah to
- 10:39prophecy is, he says, don't rejoice all of you in Felicia
- 10:43because the rod of the one who struck you is broken.
- 10:46That that is a has is dead says for a Viper will come from the
- 10:50root of a snake, and from its egg comes a flying serpent.
- 10:55So hey, if you thought a has was bad, wait for what is coming
- 10:59next, which was a Syria and I love your from its egg comes a
- 11:06flying serpent. Most of us don't think normally
- 11:10about snakes flying. That would be definitely a
- 11:13freaky thing. This would be the like seraphim
- 11:17is the word picture here. Like I talked about in Isaiah 6,
- 11:23the seraphs are the flaming ones that they have wings and they
- 11:29kind of have that appearance of a snake.
- 11:32They are shrewd, they're wise. Those are kind of the word
- 11:36pictures that are there. So he's like, oh, OK, yes, this
- 11:40here in verse #29 so here there's this snake is how they
- 11:45viewed King A has, is how the Philistine cities viewed King A
- 11:49has. They're like, cool, the snake is
- 11:51dead. And Isaiah says, well, you don't
- 11:55understand because from the egg, the end result of A has dying is
- 12:02that then Judah is less strong. Assyria will feel empowered to
- 12:07invade and so as a result, this is going to be really bad for
- 12:11Felicia. I love in verse #30 As God
- 12:16highlights, His ultimate goal is not some sort of like racial
- 12:22superiority. It is the flourishing of human
- 12:25life. That's what we read in verse 30.
- 12:27Then the first born of the poor will be well fed that those that
- 12:32were impoverished now experience plenty and verse the next line
- 12:38in there and the impoverished will lie down in safety.
- 12:41Those that do to their economic status always feel in danger.
- 12:45They will be able to simply rest and what a joy that that would
- 12:50be. But then God says this to those
- 12:53that were very often engaging in, you know, some things that
- 12:58we would call like war crimes or things like that, a barbaric
- 13:02invasions and attacking nearby towns and cities and all of
- 13:06that. They say God says I will kill
- 13:10your root with hunger and your remnant will be slang.
- 13:14So he says you think that you guys are going to be able to
- 13:17just do a bunch more evil because Judah is not in as good
- 13:21of a place right now. I am going to care for the poor,
- 13:26the needy, the unsafe, and you guys that are trying to take
- 13:31advantage and harm others. You are going to have that put
- 13:34back on you. That's verse 31.
- 13:37Whale you gates cry out, city tremble with fear.
- 13:39All Felicia for a cloud of dust is coming from the north and
- 13:42there is no one missing from the invaders ranks you have as
- 13:46Assyria comes down because there's that giant kind of
- 13:49desert region in between, if you will, like Israel.
- 13:53And I'm trying to remember in my head where all of that map is
- 13:58Actually my Bible probably has a map in the back of it.
- 14:01I don't know why I haven't looked at this more, but that
- 14:04would be smart, smart thing to do.
- 14:08So in between, this is not a modern map, so I'm going to use
- 14:13some older names for these areas, but like Lebanon and Edom
- 14:22and Moab and Ammon as they're over to the east of Israel.
- 14:28On the other side of Jordan, in between those nations that are
- 14:34kind of hugging the Jordan River, there's a big desert area
- 14:39before you get over to modern day Iran, Iraq, which is where
- 14:45kind of the Persia, Babylon, Assyria, all of those nations
- 14:49were kind of over on that end of things.
- 14:51So you wouldn't go through the desert to get to Israel or here
- 14:55to Felicia. You'd go up and down.
- 14:59So you'd go north, then hang a West and then you'd go South
- 15:06through modern day kind of Syria.
- 15:10I think you might as you're going north and then W you might
- 15:14hit some of what is currently Turkey, but like Turkey, Syria
- 15:18and then on down to Israel and Judas.
- 15:21So that's that cloud of dust coming from the north and
- 15:24there's no one missing from the invaders ranks.
- 15:27They have a full army and they are coming down and they are
- 15:30going to attack. This would be the army that
- 15:33would get Aram, or as we know it now, Syria, that was harassing
- 15:39Judah back in Isaiah Chapter 7. Ditto with the northern Kingdom
- 15:43of Israel. And so both of those would be
- 15:47taken out by Assyria. And then you had a lot of these
- 15:50Philistine cities and actually a lot of the cities of Judah
- 15:54itself came under attack. Couple of them were destroyed.
- 15:58Bunch of people booked it to Jerusalem itself, where there
- 16:03was a siege that took place before God himself delivered
- 16:06them. And we can read that in verse
- 16:08#32 what answer will be given to the messengers from that nation?
- 16:13So as Assyria sends some of its guys to try and get Judah and
- 16:18Jerusalem in particular to surrender, here's the answer
- 16:22that comes back. Yahweh has founded Zion, that is
- 16:25Jerusalem, and his oppressed people find refuge in her.
- 16:30And what a joy that we too can find refuge in God.
- 16:33And Lord willing that we don't have to go to some physical
- 16:37place to experience the safety and refuge that God provides for
- 16:40us, but instead, wherever we are, the Holy Spirit is.
- 16:44And whatever the Holy Spirit has for us, we can know that there
- 16:48is safety found in him. There is joy that can be found
- 16:52in him. And that's just a a wonderful,
- 16:55wonderful promise. Thank you for tuning in today.
- 16:58I know this is kind of a weirder portion of Scripture, even as we
- 17:03read through it. I hope that over and over again
- 17:06we're reminded of God's justice and His Holiness, His love for
- 17:09people, His love for those that our world looks down on or would
- 17:16want to take advantage of. God cares about those people,
- 17:19and so His people should care about those people.
- 17:23Thanks for tuning in. What I'm going to do is Monday
- 17:27through Friday of next week, I am going to be in South Carolina
- 17:35at a Pastors and wives couples retreat.
- 17:37It'll be the first couples thing that Samantha and I have ever
- 17:41gone to together, so I'm super excited for that.
- 17:44But I'm going to record some of my favorite passages of
- 17:48Scripture. They'll be more like Tabernacle
- 17:49tidbits because I'm not having to do a, a bunch of the carrying
- 17:55work of all right, and here's what we read last time and
- 17:58here's all of these things. It's just going to be some of my
- 18:00favorite portions of scripture. And so I'm looking forward to
- 18:04that. Thank you for allowing me to, to
- 18:07do some of that. I know no one's like no, listen,
- 18:09I just really want a 30 minute episode of Tabernacle Talk.
- 18:14If that is you and you do like longer versions of Tabernacle
- 18:18talk, let me know. I also know I have plenty of
- 18:21people who are like listen, if you can get, if you can do 5
- 18:23minutes or less that's perfect. But looking forward to a few
- 18:27shorter episodes that I'll record for next week.
- 18:30Thank you for tuning in. God bless.
