- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take, where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Three O Take
- 0:16presented by Sea Kick. This is episode Four O 7.
- 0:19I'll be your host, Kyle Corn. And I'm here with my Co host,
- 0:22Nate Reyes. Nate.
- 0:26What's up everybody? What's up, dude?
- 0:29Been whoa. It's been a little bit.
- 0:32Happy New Year, everybody. It's been a minute, yeah.
- 0:36Nice little break. Nice little break.
- 0:38Much needed break you and I were talking about.
- 0:42I think this is the longest we've gone in between two
- 0:44episodes. So yeah, that's, you know, just,
- 0:47I don't. Think I don't think we've really
- 0:49missed anything. Hopefully now everybody's missed
- 0:52us. Hopefully everyone's missed us.
- 0:55I mean, honestly, pretty much everything that's happened has
- 0:57been some of the most predictable things you could
- 1:00have imagined anyway, so you're not really going to be getting
- 1:03any ground breaking things from us during that time anyway.
- 1:06So much need a break, you know? I thought I'd be able to shake
- 1:10this sinus nonsense in 2023 to kind of close out the year, but
- 1:15here we are. I got a second one back-to-back.
- 1:19Love that I was. I was healthy for like 2 days
- 1:21and now we're back. So bear with me on that front,
- 1:24but good to be back. That's tough all things that's
- 1:27tough. I've actually remained primary
- 1:30like somewhat healthy and that's this is normally the the
- 1:35reversal. I'm normally the one that
- 1:38catches stuff. I will say just an update on on
- 1:42Nate's life. The so the the office was like
- 1:49in this basketball league, like a men's basketball league.
- 1:53So when I first like started up in like October, it was like the
- 1:57end of that league and then they were going to run it back and
- 2:00start up yesterday. So I was like, I'm in.
- 2:04Like I haven't played basketball in years, but like, I'm down.
- 2:07Can I can I predict where this story goes?
- 2:09Sure. There is AG League scout in
- 2:12attendance for game one, and they all want to.
- 2:14I'm out of here. They want to take you away.
- 2:16From the pod I'm going your. Career's taken off, yeah.
- 2:19Signing bonus and all. No dude.
- 2:23So we I like I signed up for it last week and so Paige and I
- 2:28went and went to the park like right down the street and just
- 2:31shot some hoops. First off the stroke is still
- 2:36there. The the IT still looks good.
- 2:39However, the body the body the body let me down bad dude for
- 2:45like 3 days. My calves have been so tight and
- 2:49I was like, 'cause I I was, I had like 3 days to get like
- 2:52somewhat cardio ready slash get the basketball rest off.
- 2:59And so I was like kind of getting after it a little bit.
- 3:04But I was like, Paige, like I I got to play you one-on-one, like
- 3:07beat me up however you want to. But like, I need to, like, move
- 3:09my body around to like, somewhat emulate what's going to happen
- 3:13or simulate what's going to happen.
- 3:17I did all that. My body's all sore.
- 3:18I've been stretching. And then Tuesday I show up to
- 3:22work and they're like, yeah, the league got cancelled.
- 3:24The facility. Oh, no facility in the league.
- 3:27You. Just going out and got beat up
- 3:29for nothing. It's.
- 3:30Like, dude, I was talking to her and I was like, I was a college
- 3:34athlete. Like, how does this go downhill
- 3:38so fast? How do you become out of shape
- 3:43and unathletic so quickly? I think once you hit 30, it's
- 3:47wow. I think.
- 3:48I think maturing is getting to a point in your life when your
- 3:52significant other or you just come to the realization yourself
- 3:55that stretching is necessary. It kind of is, dude.
- 3:59This. This never was a part of my
- 4:02life, and now the only way I can get up without pain is to do
- 4:06this the night before. That's it's a sad reality.
- 4:10It's insane. So.
- 4:12That's it. That's all I got for you.
- 4:14I was trying to get more active for 2024 and I got punished for
- 4:18it. So there we go.
- 4:21Speaking of 2024, and we'll get in, we'll obviously get into
- 4:25some some ball talk, but part of our anniversary trip, 'cause we
- 4:31got married New Year's Eve, we went away to a cabin for for a
- 4:35little bit and some of the time we talked, Meredith and I were
- 4:39talking about the goals for the podcast.
- 4:43In 2020. Four just kind of spit ballin
- 4:48and obviously won't go into detail on all of them but one of
- 4:51those is getting the YouTube we're trying I I set the goal
- 4:58for 2K. That's I think that's very.
- 5:01Dual So I I would I would humbly request if you're listening to
- 5:05this, we we ask from time to time but if you're listening to
- 5:09this. Go watch instead.
- 5:11You can watch if you want but even if you don't, even if
- 5:15you're like, Nah, I'm I'm audio, I'm purely audio.
- 5:17I'm strictly audio. Go over subscribe to the pod and
- 5:23and come back to your audio. But we just, we need those
- 5:25subscriptions. I'm trying to get to 2K by the
- 5:27end of the year. I think that's very, very.
- 5:29Reasonable. I think it is too.
- 5:31Very. I think it is too.
- 5:35Last thing on that note, be thinking of any, you know this
- 5:40time of year is around the time where you and I will throw out a
- 5:45trip idea and then it just kind of true.
- 5:47It just kind of manifests. So I was I was thinking about
- 5:50that the other day. So I mean, I I would be lying if
- 5:54I said I haven't been peeking around at some Home Run Derby
- 5:58tickets. Where's that at this year?
- 6:00Texas. I like that idea.
- 6:07I could get. I could get down on some Texas.
- 6:09I'm really coming around on it and you know I thought maybe
- 6:12this is the year where where we invite the the significant
- 6:17others that. 'D be fun too.
- 6:18Maybe make it a a a group? Outing.
- 6:20I don't hate it. I do not hate it.
- 6:24All I have to say just be thinking, just be thinking if if
- 6:26you're listening and and you know some some events this year
- 6:30that I'm not thinking of, throw them out there for us and maybe
- 6:33we'll we'll be at a ballpark near you.
- 6:35We'll see you. Just got me fired up, I'm
- 6:37feeling. It.
- 6:38Let's do it. Let's do it.
- 6:40All right. Let's, let's get into some free
- 6:42agent slash trade talk here. Like you said a lot lot's been
- 6:45going on, but for the most part I think the the real heavy
- 6:51hitting headlines were before the new year like kind of mid,
- 6:56mid-december. Since then we haven't really
- 6:58gotten much. I mean a a few bigger moves, but
- 7:02a lot of it's just been minor transactions here and there, but
- 7:07some of which we hadn't gotten around to because of our our
- 7:10break and everything. So we're going to be playing a
- 7:12little catch up here, but wanted to start off with what I
- 7:17believe, last I checked, is the most recent noteworthy headline,
- 7:22the Shota Imanaga Deal I saw, and I I would venture say you
- 7:32saw it too, that he took the Cubs offer when there was an
- 7:36offer on the table for close to, if not exactly double what he
- 7:44got for the Cubs. Yeah, I saw that too.
- 7:47Did I read that correctly? We still don't know the details
- 7:49on what team that is, right? I didn't see anything.
- 7:53We don't know the details of who that offer was from, but it just
- 7:57came out yesterday that the the details on the deal.
- 8:01He did take 53 mil over four years for the Cubs, so the
- 8:06narrative there is that apparently he just really wanted
- 8:09to be a cub. Which is?
- 8:11Very reminiscent of Shohei's decision to go play for the
- 8:14Angels where it's like you have all of these other organizations
- 8:17that were were vying for his his services, but he goes to the
- 8:23Angels of all places. So I don't know if that's.
- 8:26I don't know if there's like a a loyalty element that comes into
- 8:30play there where you get into conversation with the team and
- 8:33like that's that's where you decide to go.
- 8:36But clearly, if he's turning down a deal worth twice as much
- 8:41to play for, the Cubs sounds like he wants to go play in
- 8:44Wrigley. Give me a guess on what other
- 8:47team you think it was. No, No it wasn't.
- 8:49The Red Sox willing to be double on that deal, but clearly
- 8:55doesn't have the the same attraction level, I guess.
- 9:02The gravitational pull. I'm going to, I'm going to say
- 9:07Giants. I was literally saying the same
- 9:09thing. I'm going to say giants.
- 9:11That's my guess. I mean, if if any team out there
- 9:14has a documented history of going for a guy and coming up
- 9:18short, it's the Giants. Yeah, but I I couldn't think.
- 9:27I mean, other teams presumably were in on him.
- 9:29Like, I'm sure the Dodgers is crazy, even not as in of an
- 9:34offseason as they've had sure they were having conversations.
- 9:41I feel like we need to revisit the Dodgers stuff, man.
- 9:44We might have to I've. Seen there's been so much on the
- 9:48Dodgers lately that I'm I'm frankly just blown away at the
- 9:54the narrative that's being built on this team.
- 9:56Like what? Don't We're not going to dive
- 9:59into it. But only thing I'll say is don't
- 10:01be upset with a team that's willing to invest in players to
- 10:05make the organization better. How many times do we have to say
- 10:09it? Stop being upset with the
- 10:11Dodgers. Be upset with your team who
- 10:13refuses to do what the Dodgers are doing because they're
- 10:16capable of doing it. That's all I'll say.
- 10:20But yeah, how do we feel about this Imanaga deal?
- 10:23I don't know a ton about them. I looked into some numbers a
- 10:30little bit, some stuff that like stood out to me career, 318 ERA
- 10:36through 148 innings last year, which is pretty solid, 174
- 10:42strikeouts. The biggest thing for me that
- 10:45was the 4% walk rate. That's got to be extremely
- 10:51attractive. I think it's.
- 10:56I don't know what the Cubs did, I don't know what they put in
- 10:58his water during the meeting, but for them to convince him to
- 11:02take half on what seems to be a pretty team friendly deal for
- 11:07the most part. I did see that he's got an
- 11:10option that could potentially push this to 80 million, so
- 11:18that's interesting. But even then I think like any
- 11:20'cause, we heard rumors of it getting north of 100, especially
- 11:23when like the Yamamoto deal just kept climbing and climbing.
- 11:27It seemed like it was helping the Imanaga situation.
- 11:31So I like it. I I think I don't.
- 11:35I don't know much about his game.
- 11:37I didn't really get to to watch like any any videos of him
- 11:41pitching yet. From what it seems like he lives
- 11:44in the zone. He's kind of seems like a a
- 11:46pitch to contact guy the him and Kyle Hendricks.
- 11:53You know what I mean? Like sitting in the same kind of
- 11:57approach seems like so curious. Just see like how the numbers
- 12:02go. Maybe a little bit of inflation
- 12:06being in Wrigley. You know how it is in Wrigley
- 12:09like the early beginning of the year you get some wind some bad
- 12:12weather helps pitchers out. But then once summer hits it's
- 12:16like that's a beautiful ballpark to hit in.
- 12:18So yeah, I'm just curious to see but I I think makes sense like
- 12:23the the central's up for up for grabs.
- 12:26So any anything like this could be pretty solid maybe.
- 12:30I was thinking maybe he's boys with maybe say a Suzuki.
- 12:33I don't know if there's a little something there could be but
- 12:39because I like we can't help but have that part of the
- 12:43conversation. You know, I know, Yamamoto said.
- 12:46Hey, whether Otani was a Dodger or not, I wanted to be there.
- 12:49But there's got to be some some comfort knowing that you have
- 12:55like the familiarity with your your teammate on a brand new, in
- 12:59a brand new country, in a brand new city, on a brand new roster.
- 13:04So I don't know if Shota and and say our our boys but.
- 13:09I am seeing a picture right now. I'm looking at it there.
- 13:14They're clearly on two different teams over in Japan, but they're
- 13:18they're hugging, they're embracing, laughing.
- 13:20So yeah, Ventures say there's some element of.
- 13:23Of something there. Some sort of back back story
- 13:27there. So you know, maybe that maybe
- 13:30that played a role in it. Looking at this rotation for the
- 13:33Cubs, as it stands right now, you've got Justin Steele,
- 13:38Jameson Tae Own, Shota Imanaga, Kyle Hendricks and Jordan Wicks.
- 13:42So I. Don't hate it.
- 13:44I don't hate it either. I think that can that can get
- 13:48you and we we talked about this every year you need if you if
- 13:51you plan to contend which I would venture to say the Cubs
- 13:54are are planning to contend if you if that is your your course
- 13:59of action that you're planning to take do what you got to do to
- 14:04get yourself to the deadline and then fill in the gaps.
- 14:06I I would venture to say that this rotation as it stands right
- 14:11now gets you to the deadline and you're still above water. 100%
- 14:15agree. I think it does depend on like
- 14:17whether Justin Steele's year last year was a fluke or not.
- 14:20But I agree. Like you, you get in your
- 14:23position to win games and, you know, put yourself in a position
- 14:26to potentially be a buyer at the deadline.
- 14:28And again, that division's up for grabs.
- 14:30So I don't. I don't see why not.
- 14:33Maybe a bat or two added. Then I'd be.
- 14:38I'd be interested to see what the Cubs do.
- 14:43Why not? I did see also one last note the
- 14:48the money going back to the base stars, did you see that that it
- 14:52could grow if that option gets picked up?
- 14:54It was something of like if that option does get picked up and he
- 14:59grows to 880 mil, there's something of nearing, like 15%
- 15:05of his earnings would go back to the base stars.
- 15:09The D According to ESPN, the DL has several provisions,
- 15:12including the team's option to extend the contract after both
- 15:15years two and three to 80 million / 5 years.
- 15:18But if the Cubs decline in either year, Imanaga can choose
- 15:21to become a free agent or remain in the original contract.
- 15:25The Cubs will pay just under 10 million to the Bay Stars in the
- 15:29form of a release fee. Are you?
- 15:34Are you I? Thought I saw something that it
- 15:36would go up from there. There was like another
- 15:39provisional thing like if if the option got picked up it would
- 15:46grow. I don't know why but I thought I
- 15:49saw that somewhere. I don't know.
- 15:52To 80 mil. Is that what you're talking
- 15:53about? Yeah, like if that option goes
- 15:55to 80 mil, then the Bay Stars then get like another little
- 16:00bonus situation maybe. I don't know if I recall seeing
- 16:08that, if I'm being honest. Here it is.
- 16:16Where'd it? Go.
- 16:19OK, that'll initially be a the that posting release fee or
- 16:25whatever was 9.8 million and would increase if the team
- 16:29exercises the option. Or Imanaga unlocks more money
- 16:33via escalators, whatever that means.
- 16:36So I guess bonuses like, yeah, yeah, performance bonuses, yeah,
- 16:40the Cubs would owe the base stars an additional 15% of
- 16:43whatever the money, whatever money the southpaw earns from
- 16:47beyond the initial guarantee. So if the guarantee grows, the
- 16:51base stars get end up getting a little bit more money.
- 16:54Interesting. It is interesting and.
- 16:57There's just like a correlation there and yeah.
- 17:00And I I was kind of thinking about this.
- 17:02I know I've been out a little bit, but like between the Otani,
- 17:05well not Otani, but the Yamamoto and the Imanaga situation and
- 17:10well, yeah, I guess Otani, we're seeing very creative clauses
- 17:20that I don't think we've we're very familiar with.
- 17:23Yeah, I don't. That's new.
- 17:27I don't know how I feel about it because we're getting to the
- 17:29point now. Was it was it Yamamoto's
- 17:32contract where it said that he couldn't be optioned to the
- 17:35miners without his consent or something?
- 17:38I didn't see that one. I do see.
- 17:41These clauses are getting insane.
- 17:43I'm like, in what world is that? Like if you're from, if you're
- 17:48front office, in what world is that acceptable?
- 17:50Like I saw the Ohtani thing where I I think if I I'm not
- 17:56sure, don't quote me here, but I thought I saw like if Dave
- 17:59Roberts or like GM or baseball operations, one of the three
- 18:04guys gets moved, he gets the option to leave.
- 18:08Yeah, this contract, something like that.
- 18:10Yeah, I think this is what the new thing is going to end up
- 18:14being. Because like eventually, I know,
- 18:17like we're going to say like, where where are we going to cut
- 18:19the, like, when are we going to stop?
- 18:21At what point is too much money, too much money?
- 18:25I think the contracts are going to start to get a little more
- 18:27creative. And this is the point that I was
- 18:29thinking about. It's been a while since we
- 18:31talked, so I was excited to tell you this.
- 18:34I had this like little light bulb moment during the break.
- 18:38I was watching. Do you ever see air this story
- 18:41about like, Michael Jordan's deal with Nike?
- 18:43Dude, Meredith's younger sister. Shout out Jess.
- 18:48She worked on set for that. Really.
- 18:50Matt Damon and all them solid. Movie.
- 18:52Fabulous movie. Very underrated. 100%
- 18:55recommended if you haven't seen it.
- 18:57But the point I'm making is like when at the end of the movie.
- 19:02Well, I'm not spoiling anything. This is all history that
- 19:05everyone knows, but Michael Jordan's mom is like negotiating
- 19:09the contract and saying we're going to need a royalty deal in
- 19:12this shoe deal. If you're going to make my son
- 19:15shoe, I need a piece of that. Like the family needs to make
- 19:18sure that we're getting that money coming in.
- 19:20And that's what was like the ground breaking thing, right?
- 19:24They said this has never been done in the industry before.
- 19:27We've given guys shoes before, but never a royalty deal on like
- 19:30ongoing sales. It made me think of like the
- 19:35money may grow, but the these types of clauses are gonna start
- 19:41being more and more popular. And if Ohtani's committing and
- 19:47bringing everything he brings to an organization and he says I'm
- 19:54signing due to these people in this room giving me their idea
- 19:59of what the vision's gonna look like during the length of this
- 20:01contract. Then I want to make sure that we
- 20:04can stay committed to this as an organization.
- 20:07So I think these clauses, it's a little wild.
- 20:10I don't know about the like the being sent down thing.
- 20:12I don't, I don't think I'm on board with that.
- 20:13But I think you're going to start to see players becoming
- 20:20almost like AI. Don't have ownership in this
- 20:24organization, but I'm going to make sure shots are called and
- 20:27there's probably only a couple superstars that can pull this
- 20:30this off. But I need my manager, I need my
- 20:33GMI, need my VP of Operations, whatever it may be, to stay in
- 20:37place because I'm buying in on your guys's vision.
- 20:41So I think this is gonna start to be more of a popular thing
- 20:45amongst contracts. Yeah, I mean we all know that,
- 20:51you know, money makes your life more comfortable and and these
- 20:53guys that are reeling in these insane contracts know that.
- 20:59But I think I I think you bring up a good point is these clauses
- 21:02are going to be additional ways or supplementary ways to make
- 21:07life comfortable for these guys. Where if for Yamamoto, knowing
- 21:12that he's not going to get sent down unless he decides to or you
- 21:18know who, whoever, whatever, what other, whatever other
- 21:23clauses come down the pipe, it's like it's just going to be
- 21:27something for for Otani, for example, it's going to be
- 21:29something where he looks at that.
- 21:31And like you said, I want these people around me.
- 21:34I want my life to be comfortable in that regard.
- 21:36I have my money, I'm good there. But how else can I make this
- 21:40situation as best go as as well for me as I can?
- 21:44Because that, let's be honest, like it's going to be I think
- 21:47decades before we see an Otani level superstar again.
- 21:53Sure. So I he's now set that bar where
- 21:57I think a lot of these organizations are going to look
- 21:59at that overall price tag of 700 million and they're going to
- 22:05compare whatever future free agent or superstar to that
- 22:08number and say are you that good?
- 22:12If not, let's drop it down to 400, four, 5500 and start to
- 22:18maneuver into these new types of clauses.
- 22:21So I the whole reason I brought up like the the Michael Jordan
- 22:24Air thing is because like I think this is the new way
- 22:28contracts are going to start to look is maybe we don't creep
- 22:32over 7 hundred, $800 billion contracts, but we will see more
- 22:37organizational control in these players contracts.
- 22:41Does that make sense? Like crazy.
- 22:43No and and the the benefit of these clauses is crazy as I
- 22:48think some of them will end up being down the road as we we
- 22:52travert traverse into this new territory is that they're gonna,
- 22:57like I was saying they're gonna provide some freedom and while
- 23:00they may not provide initial monetary return it gives it.
- 23:07They could lend themselves to you know additional streams of
- 23:12revenue or income. Like if a guy off the top of my
- 23:15head, if a guy is like I want X amount of days throughout the
- 23:18season to visit with and explore brand deals to meet with
- 23:24executives of companies that I'm I'm supporters of then like
- 23:30upfront you're going well, you're not getting any money
- 23:32directly through that clause, but it lends itself to opening
- 23:35up and exploring different options and for sure for your
- 23:38career after the fact. So I don't know there there's a
- 23:41lot at play there. I'm sure similar to the way the
- 23:44nil stuff with college unfolded, it's gonna get real messy real
- 23:49quick and I think the league is just gonna have to keep a close
- 23:53eye on how this, how this unfolds because I mean just the
- 23:59few that we've talked about already these clauses.
- 24:02So getting a little like, yeah, all right, like, let's not
- 24:06forget that the player or that the teams here are the ones that
- 24:10the players are playing for and it's.
- 24:12Yeah, 'cause if you, if you get too far into this, now you're
- 24:14getting into the NBA and clearly the exact the players are
- 24:18running the NBA. So, yeah, I don't think we can
- 24:20get into that. Yeah.
- 24:23Let's switch gears here. I mentioned having to play a
- 24:25little catch up. We haven't had a chance yet to
- 24:28cover the Red Sox moves, but kind of lumping them here
- 24:35together, the Chris Sale and Lucas Giolito moves, let me just
- 24:39say right off the top, I've had a number of people reach out.
- 24:43They say where are you at on this whole Chris Sale thing?
- 24:47I've had plenty of time to think about it at this point.
- 24:50I still feel the same exact way as I did when I saw the the
- 24:52update come through. I'm so glad this is over.
- 24:56I'm so glad that this experiment is.
- 24:59Over feeling had a feeling you'd be, you'd be on this board.
- 25:02It just wasn't working. And you know, I, I, I saw a lot
- 25:09of Rays. The credit to Braves fans, I did
- 25:12see somewhat of a split in terms of reaction.
- 25:15A lot of people were saying, yo, a A's at it again, fleece the
- 25:20Sox, and then a lot of other people were going Why are we
- 25:23giving up Von Grissom for this guy to the to the the Braves
- 25:29fans, or just baseball fans in general that think the Braves
- 25:32somehow fleece the the Red Sox here?
- 25:35The only way this ends up being any sort of a fleece is if Von
- 25:39Grissom, similar to Chris Sale, just can't play if he's hurt all
- 25:43the time. And Chris Sale gives you even a
- 25:47fraction of what he gave you in 2018 because you're not getting
- 25:52the odds of you getting a Chris Sale that gives you north of 20
- 25:57starts, slim to none. Yeah, 100% agree.
- 26:01I I think this, I I think if we're going to say like who won,
- 26:08I I think it comes down to whatever happens this year.
- 26:11But I think the Red Sox got the best case scenario out of this.
- 26:18There is AI mean you can speak to this.
- 26:19There is a desperate hole at shortstop.
- 26:23I think the organization was very much against sliding Trevor
- 26:26Story over there for the foreseeable future.
- 26:30I think this makes a lot of sense to the Red Sox.
- 26:33The plan is to have story. Play and Grissom Ed's second
- 26:38Yeah well I mean I guess this is a a decent safety net because
- 26:42Ron Grissom is clearly capable of playing both worst case
- 26:46scenario Trevor Story you know injuries come back or arm
- 26:49strength issues come back and then you swap them.
- 26:52So I like it. The one curious I was looking
- 26:57into like the details of everything and I don't remember
- 27:00what article I was reading but it was saying it was interesting
- 27:03that Sale didn't force the Braves to pick up the 2025
- 27:10option pre trade and I think that's where all of this the
- 27:16Braves fleeced the Red Sox. It wasn't necessarily like that
- 27:20in my mind. I think like what I think it was
- 27:25a smart move on both sides like instead of like kind of
- 27:32handcuffing your new team Chris Sale accepted A2 year deal with
- 27:38which is now 38 million a year. So it was like a, you know,
- 27:43Anthropolis is genius. I'm not arguing that and I'm not
- 27:47saying this is a bad move at all.
- 27:48I just think it was it was pretty smart.
- 27:51And then on top of that, obviously like I think the
- 27:54deferment money went away because he had $10 million that
- 27:58was deferred. So this new contract voided
- 28:01that, but the Red Sox sent that money anyway.
- 28:04You say 38 mill a year. I thought his salary.
- 28:07Was total two years 30. Eight, Yeah.
- 28:09Yeah. OK.
- 28:09Yeah, 27 1/2 and 20 OR this year, this year.
- 28:13Two year, 38. But I saw that the Red Sox sent
- 28:1617. Yeah, they sent another 10 for
- 28:19the deferment money, but this new contract voided that 10
- 28:26million. But I think the Braves got to
- 28:28keep that 10 million, from my understanding.
- 28:32I don't know. What happened with that 10 mil?
- 28:33Yeah. I thought I saw it got voided,
- 28:35but either way, like the Braves are coming out with only like
- 28:40what that option did by not making the Braves pick up that
- 28:44option is that they weren't going to be, they were going to
- 28:46be hit with taxes in 2025 because of that $20 million
- 28:51option. So him avoiding that, them
- 28:53receiving the money and thoughtless changing it to a two
- 28:56year deal avoided all those things.
- 29:00I think it was smart. I think it was a win win.
- 29:02You got everything you needed out of Chris Sale, you got a
- 29:04ring out of it. So it's like.
- 29:06And that's what I say. I'm like thanks for the thanks
- 29:09for the ring. I'm not writing off your whole
- 29:11career as a member of the Red Sox but like we have to have
- 29:14some some awareness here and. Thank you for your service kind
- 29:17of thing. Credit to him, his
- 29:19self-awareness is off the charts.
- 29:21He recognizes that he completely sabotaged the the team with that
- 29:25contract because of his performance, not by accepting
- 29:28it, but just what he was able or what little he was able to offer
- 29:31after he signed the contract. But I I think he just didn't
- 29:38want to he didn't want to start off on the wrong foot with the
- 29:40Braves. He was he was like look I'm not
- 29:42going to. I I know what my careers looked
- 29:46like the last handful of years. I'm not going to I'm I'm in no
- 29:49position to be demanding this or that or any sort of claws like
- 29:52we're just talking about. So I think he just wanted to cut
- 29:57ties and he he all but said that he owed the Red Sox that.
- 30:03Like he he he did say his best years from Boston.
- 30:06He also said his worst years from Boston.
- 30:08So it's insane insane that I don't think the the Braves
- 30:14fleece the Red Sox. I also am not saying that the
- 30:16Red Sox fleece the Braves because I have my opinion about
- 30:22Chris Sale and what I think 2024 and beyond will look like.
- 30:26But you have to play the what if game here you have to go.
- 30:29What if he gives you 2025 starts and he he he gives you quality
- 30:36outings And then what if Von Grissom goes out and like gives
- 30:41you adequate play at second base, then it's A to me it's a
- 30:46win win. I just think I like it with Von
- 30:48Grissom being blocked in that organization, Chris Sale going
- 30:51nowhere here it I think a a a new look for each guy.
- 30:56We save them both, well 100% agree and he slots in.
- 31:00He went from having to be an ace when he doesn't have a stuff
- 31:03anymore to now a 3-4 rotation guy that's absolutely loaded and
- 31:11I I've got no issue on either side.
- 31:13I think this is a win win. If you're the Braves, save them
- 31:16for every give. Give them a start every 6th day
- 31:18and save them for the postseason.
- 31:20That I mean, there's no pressure that you need to put on this guy
- 31:24because you're you're you're, you're OK with your rotation,
- 31:27you don't need him to be the guy, agreed.
- 31:29Lucas Giolito. 2 year 38 and a half $1,000,000 contract.
- 31:35There is an option after the first year.
- 31:36Simply put, the best case for the Red Sox here is that you get
- 31:45somewhat of a haul at the deadline because this is really
- 31:50just Giolito looking for a place that will take him so that he
- 31:54can bounce back, and when, if and when he does, he's gone.
- 32:01So if the Red Sox are smart, which based on the way this
- 32:05offseason's gone, I can't say I can't bank on them doing this,
- 32:09but the smart move would be to trade him at the deadline, get
- 32:12something if he's throwing well. If not he's obviously going to
- 32:15opt back in and be back for 2025 and and hopefully we'll he'll
- 32:21get to figure it out then. But you know as it stands right
- 32:27now I don't think the Red Sox are in any condition to compete
- 32:32in 2024. So I'm not really sure.
- 32:37You know, I he he again. He goes out and throws well this
- 32:43year he's gone at the deadline or he they do nothing and he
- 32:46walks after the season or he's garbage and makes 2024 all that
- 32:53worse and then you're stuck with him for 2025, having put
- 32:57together multiple consecutive poor seasons, poor campaigns
- 33:03together. So I'm not I'm I'm all right
- 33:08with it. Like we at least have a name in
- 33:09the rotation now. We're not relying on guys like
- 33:13James Paxton necessarily to be the dude.
- 33:17Hopefully Luke Lukasciolito can tap into a little bit of what he
- 33:22he showed us years ago. But I'm not.
- 33:25I'm not necessarily banking on it.
- 33:27I think if you talk about Red Sox needs, you just need
- 33:30consistency and like put the numbers aside, obviously it's
- 33:35it's been down the last two years but thirty starts in
- 33:372022-2023 at 33 starts, 161 innings and then 184 innings
- 33:45last year. So, like, they need innings.
- 33:48It was three. Was it three straight seasons
- 33:50with 30 plus starts? I think so.
- 33:53I think that's what it was. Yeah.
- 33:55So. So it's like that's that's
- 33:57that's a need. Yeah, 100%.
- 34:01I looked at the depth chart. I'm assuming he slots in as one.
- 34:06Giolito, Baio, Pavetta, Hauck Whitlock, Cutter Crawford.
- 34:11That's what I wrote down as far as names.
- 34:14Does that sound about right? Yeah, I mean that.
- 34:19I don't think you, aside from the fact that it's just like an
- 34:23honorary thing. I mean, to me, it's a flip of
- 34:25the coin. Baio Chili Dome.
- 34:27I'd be fine either way. I'm not going to be upset
- 34:29opening day if I see one versus the other.
- 34:31Yeah, either way it's fine with me.
- 34:33Yeah, but I think that's I I don't, I don't hate it.
- 34:37I think what you said, like you're getting innings somewhat
- 34:40affordable. Best case scenario, you flip
- 34:42them. Worst case scenario, he's a dud
- 34:46and you know you took a shot. I I if I was a Red Sox fan, I'd
- 34:51say I'm at least happy we're taking a shot on somebody
- 34:55because clearly this, this market is outside of the big
- 35:00names. There there was like big names
- 35:04and then a lot of risky names, and he's one of the risky names.
- 35:07Yes and no on taking a shot you know I'm I I just feel like with
- 35:14the contracts they've given out recently you know like Turner
- 35:17Giulito these like 1-2 kind of piece it together give me give
- 35:22me something to latch onto for beyond just 162 games.
- 35:26Like I I understand that we're waiting on a core and all that
- 35:29but like in the meantime open up the checkbook like you there are
- 35:35well there were there were guys to be picked up and you know we.
- 35:42I think that's the issue. Though pennies over here.
- 35:44It doesn't really seem like a win now situation.
- 35:47Maybe the contractor offers were out there, but I bet a lot of
- 35:51these big names were just like, I don't know if you're ready to
- 35:53compete quite yet. I think this is a third or
- 36:00fourth place in the division in my mind.
- 36:02Yeah, barring like any, like surprise.
- 36:05For the Red Sox, yeah. I'm thinking.
- 36:08I'm thinking four or five, Yeah. Yeah.
- 36:10And I bet some of these bigger names saw that, you know, saw
- 36:13the writing on the wall. It's just they put themselves in
- 36:17this position for what you were saying.
- 36:19For some of these contracts they've handed out the last few
- 36:21years, it this is what they're, you know, they're getting in
- 36:24return. A guy that they were rumored to
- 36:27be in on but obviously missed out to.
- 36:29Oscar Hernandez, another name we have yet to get to but just want
- 36:33to go over that. Briefly signed a one year 23 and
- 36:38a half $1,000,000 contract with the Dodgers as we we very well
- 36:41know at this point. Did I did I hear correctly that
- 36:46there that he turned down a multi year deal from the
- 36:51Dodgers? I thought it was elsewhere.
- 36:56I thought it was elsewhere, which I'm sure was the case.
- 37:00Like I'm sure other teams were offered multi year deals, but I
- 37:03think that I I heard or read or saw that he the Dodgers have put
- 37:09out a multi year deal. But I think he was treating this
- 37:13as like a bet on myself kind of year so that he could revisit
- 37:16the the market at the end of the year.
- 37:21Maybe it was only a two year deal.
- 37:23He's 31, so I think it. I think it was two, yeah.
- 37:27I mean, I'm not saying it was like 5-6 I I think it was 2.
- 37:30But I I don't hate it. I guess 31, if you do a two year
- 37:38deal, you're not hitting the market again until 3334 and then
- 37:42at that point who's going to give you any more than that.
- 37:45So I think if you maximize your potential this year hitting a
- 37:49absolutely stupid stacked lineup, be the beneficiary of,
- 37:57you know some productive numbers, I I think it it kind of
- 38:01makes sense. I mean 23 1/2 for the year.
- 38:03It's no, it's no number to shake off.
- 38:06No. He did play 160 games last year.
- 38:08I was surprised to see that. I did, yeah, I saw that.
- 38:11Do you? I mean, do we?
- 38:13I think we can both agree that's a little bit of an overpay,
- 38:16right? But I think at this point the
- 38:17donagers are just they're just playing with stupid money now,
- 38:22so. Yeah, like, why not, I I mean,
- 38:2426 jacks, 93 RB is last year slugging wasn't great.
- 38:29It's 741 OPS so. 8 1/2 of that is deferred by the way.
- 38:36Which? Well, there you go.
- 38:37It's just insane. Why?
- 38:38It's crazy how this deferral stuff is really coming in.
- 38:41How are we? And again, revisiting this thing
- 38:44with the Dodgers. Don't be upset for Don't be
- 38:48upset at the Dodgers for playing within the rules.
- 38:50Like it. Yeah, just be.
- 38:52Again, be upset with your team that is incapable of utilizing
- 38:55these loopholes that exist. I'm not saying, I'm not saying
- 38:58you should be able to defer a one year contract just Willy
- 39:02nilly, but like the rule as it stands right now allows for that
- 39:05and they they took advantage of it.
- 39:07So like don't be upset with the Dodgers.
- 39:08They're just they're smarter than your team.
- 39:11That's the reality of it. I got fun.
- 39:13I I wrote out the lineup. He's going to be bottom third.
- 39:18Yeah, I did. So I got Mookie lead off.
- 39:21He's now switched to fully second base.
- 39:25I put Freddy too, playing first. I've.
- 39:29I've seen Otani too. Yeah, I I I kind of.
- 39:32I'm down for either of those swapping.
- 39:35I don't think either of them care, but I do like the
- 39:37back-to-back thing because I think I didn't look at numbers
- 39:40but I would go ahead and assume lefties don't matter against
- 39:42them. So I don't mind them being
- 39:45back-to-back. But I put Otani third.
- 39:48DH Will Smith cleaning up, catching Max Muncie over at
- 39:54third, hitting fifth. I then put Tay Oscar 6th in
- 40:00right field, outman playing center hitting seven.
- 40:08I don't know if Tay Oscar plays left, maybe because then you got
- 40:11Jason Hayward slash, Manny Margot hitting eight.
- 40:16Well, I think those two just kind of rotate.
- 40:18I don't believe I forgot they picked up Margot.
- 40:20Yeah, he was in the glass now. Deal.
- 40:22That's right. Yeah, and then Rojas and Chris
- 40:26Taylor hitting nine, playing short and those two just kind
- 40:29of. Well, it would be lux lux.
- 40:31Rotating or no, when does I didn't is lux.
- 40:35When does Lux get back? Is it this?
- 40:38Is it anytime soon? He what I saw.
- 40:43I saw a report the other day that said he was working out at
- 40:45Dodger Stadium with Bueller, I think.
- 40:50Well then you got, I would say maybe Lux Rojas, Chris Taylor
- 40:52all kind of fighting for time hitting ninth.
- 40:56That's crazy though. That's nuts.
- 41:01That's a stupid lineup. Yeah, 'cause Lux Tore hit.
- 41:05That's right, he tore. It was in spring training
- 41:07towards ACL because it was amidst all the World Baseball
- 41:11Classic nonsense. Yeah, so maybe sometime at some
- 41:17point, but you don't have to rush back now.
- 41:19You have plenty of depth. The bench is solid.
- 41:23It's it's crazy, man. Like when you talk about like a
- 41:26flyer, 31 year old deal, 31 year old Tay Oscar Hernandez deal,
- 41:31like risk reward, why not toss them in?
- 41:38But that goes right, left, left, right, left, right, left, left,
- 41:46right. That's a stupid line up, man.
- 41:49Super, super deep. You want to talk Robbie, Ray?
- 41:57Yeah, let's do it. The Giants pick up Robbie Ray as
- 42:04they send Mitch Hanniger and Anthony Deslafani to the
- 42:12Mississippi. Finally, I I thought of you
- 42:16immediately when I saw that deal, by the way, because I saw
- 42:18an outfielder leaving San Francisco.
- 42:21Yeah. It's about time instead of them
- 42:24bringing one in, so. I I I mentioned before we hopped
- 42:30on, I felt like this was a little under the radar.
- 42:33Like I I feel like this deal has a good bit of upside for the.
- 42:40Giants. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:43I think it's somewhat of a win win.
- 42:45I think it's some lottery tickets being traded for lottery
- 42:47tickets because like Robbie's not.
- 42:49Robbie Ray's not coming back till middle of the year.
- 42:55Yeah, I think it was an even money swap because the I think
- 43:00the Ms. or Giants, one of the two threw in money to even out.
- 43:05I guess for the Mariners, that was probably not a great deal.
- 43:11Anyway, What's left? Wasn't it like three years, 75?
- 43:1673. Yeah, I don't think.
- 43:19I mean, it's looking back, Hindsight's 2020, but like, I
- 43:21don't think. I don't think it was probably
- 43:26the smartest deal he's got, like.
- 43:30Robbie's got an opt out after 2024 so.
- 43:34I don't think he would do it. He'd be dumb to do it.
- 43:36Yeah, because you're going to have a half a season worth of
- 43:39stuff. I don't think anyone's going to
- 43:42offer you that much for the remaining or even multi year
- 43:45deal after that. So I don't know though I.
- 43:48I'm not disagreeing with you, but with what he was able to do
- 43:52in Toronto plus half a season, if he comes back healthy and is
- 43:58able to throw well and and mimic that performance pre injury, do
- 44:04you not, do you think that teams would still shy away?
- 44:08I I mean, I I think there's probably going to be like some
- 44:12some Bay, some Bay bias playing in Oracle.
- 44:16You know what I mean? Big stadium.
- 44:20So like I I think numbers will look pretty decent there.
- 44:26I mean, I guess I just, I don't know.
- 44:28I I wouldn't really be that interested in it.
- 44:33Well, I think it's a good deal for him.
- 44:34It's a good change of scenery. Mariners got off of that
- 44:38contract and like, squeeze what you can out of Mitch Haniger as
- 44:43a little homecoming Anthony Desklafani.
- 44:46Like, we've seen some flashes of good stuff in there, but like
- 44:49your your rotation's good enough, so you don't really need
- 44:53to worry too much about that. So put it simply, you'll pick
- 44:55him up in fantasy for a spot start here so he'll he'll
- 44:59probably he'll shine in time. And then, I mean, they did, they
- 45:06did make some other moves. They're trying to load up on
- 45:08bats. They moved for, they made the
- 45:11move for Luke Rayley, got Mitch Garver.
- 45:14So it's like they're trying to add a little bit of Bop
- 45:16completely. Forgot about that, yeah.
- 45:17That little bop to that line up, so I don't hate it.
- 45:20I think they're doing some some smart stuff.
- 45:22I just, I wouldn't expect a ton out of Mitch Hanniger.
- 45:25Probably just a little homecoming, soak it up.
- 45:28Kind of 2024, but we'll see. This is more of just kind of a a
- 45:35cut your ties from that contract.
- 45:37I think so. From the situation, I would.
- 45:38I think so say. And then the Giants, like
- 45:40there's not much else out there. So you got to do what you got to
- 45:45do and then again, like you said, high potential reward.
- 45:54There's Cy Young stuff in there somewhere.
- 45:56Just if he wore a bigger jersey, maybe he could tap into it a
- 46:03little bit easier. I don't know.
- 46:04There, maybe there, there's something to be said for getting
- 46:09your getting your injuries right with a team and then coming
- 46:12back. I mean the Sox, it's what the
- 46:14Sox did with PAX and they paid him.
- 46:15I don't even remember what what they're paying him to rehab for
- 46:18like a full year and then he comes back the next year and
- 46:21gives you serviceable stuff. So and Robbie Ray can think the
- 46:27ceiling is hot. Yeah, the ceiling's higher
- 46:29there. So like I said, I I think
- 46:32there's there's a lot of potential there for that move.
- 46:36I'm just disappointed Gabe Kepler isn't there anymore
- 46:38because I really could have pictured them just like side by
- 46:43side in the clubhouse, staring at themselves in the mirror, you
- 46:46know what I mean? Oh yeah, Flexing.
- 46:48Checking the fit. In the weight room?
- 46:51Yeah, like swapping, like workout plans and creating
- 46:57formulas and all. That I think they could have
- 46:58been boys but. Too bad.
- 47:02It's a real shame. Also real shame that the Mets
- 47:06have fallen as as low as they've fallen.
- 47:10Harrison, Bader, Luis Severino, Sean Menaya, all names that they
- 47:16have acquired as of late. Tell me a little bit about this,
- 47:23this duo of Bader and Severino. I don't know.
- 47:26It's it's so funny to see them pick up scraps.
- 47:28I don't know why it's like it's such a thing, but it is such a
- 47:33thing like you're just picking up scraps.
- 47:35They did it with Gary. They're doing it, doing it here
- 47:39with Severino, with Bader. I I like Severino.
- 47:43I I think I when that deal went down, I was like, you know, I I
- 47:46I wish him the best. I I like him.
- 47:49I think he just said in like his little interview that he thought
- 47:52he was going to die at Yankee. It's just such a wild thing to
- 47:56say. Like chill.
- 47:57You're not judge getting traded to the Giants like.
- 48:01Relax. Come on now.
- 48:05But it was same thing like it. It's kind of like, you know, we
- 48:08we banked on you for a while. We were hoping for the best and
- 48:10you haven't delivered in a little bit, but it's in there.
- 48:14I hope. I hope he has success.
- 48:16I could see him having success. I like the fit.
- 48:19I mean, I don't need it. I just it you're talking about a
- 48:24Mets team again, we'll revisit this that was caught tripping up
- 48:29saying that we're not competing in 2024, possibly not even 2025,
- 48:34and as a result of that, no one's going to want to go there.
- 48:38So you're except picking up these scraps.
- 48:40You're basically a land of misfits right now all betting on
- 48:42themselves. So I could very much see
- 48:47Harrison Bader in Severino finishing the season off
- 48:50somewhere else if they're if they're having a good 2024 and
- 48:53they move on and and get traded at the deadline.
- 48:55But I don't know doesn't fire me up that much.
- 49:00I like Bader. He's an energy guy.
- 49:03It's it's not like anything that moves the needle that much.
- 49:07But I do like him. I think he's a good teammate and
- 49:09he plays hard and like if you're a kid and and you wanted to
- 49:14emulate someone's game, I I could say there's you could do a
- 49:17lot worse than trying to be like Harrison Bader.
- 49:20So I like him. Plus him and him and Pete were
- 49:26teammates in Florida. Yeah, yeah.
- 49:29So maybe there's something there too.
- 49:31There's a post going around. It was, I would venture, say it
- 49:34was completely intentional. But there's a post going around
- 49:36from some Mets account that photoshopped.
- 49:38Once they picked up Bader, it was like what?
- 49:40Something like welcome to the Mets.
- 49:42Harrison Bader and the Photoshop, Logan Paul's face on.
- 49:47And like if if you're just scrolling you wouldn't really
- 49:50you wouldn't think twice about it.
- 49:51But when you look at it, you're like.
- 49:53I see that's. That's Logan Paul.
- 49:55That's literally Logan Paul. He took Logan Paul's headshot.
- 49:57It was hilarious. Got to get those numbers, am I
- 50:01right? The Shamanaya acquisition, I
- 50:09think I personally, honestly, I'm past the, I'm past the well,
- 50:14this could have some upside. Yeah, but I think he's cooked
- 50:18for me. Yeah, I held on.
- 50:21I held on as long as I could. I really did.
- 50:23But it it just, it, it hasn't panned out.
- 50:26So the fact that he got 28 mil over 2 years I mean.
- 50:29That wasn't overpay. That wasn't you're you just
- 50:32overpaid for innings, Yeah. Yeah.
- 50:34He swindled for sure. And again.
- 50:38It all makes sense. It comes back full circle.
- 50:40You have to overpay for Indians when nobody wants to go there,
- 50:45and you need serviceable arms that can give you those Indians.
- 50:49Otherwise you're going to be throwing position players 789
- 50:53every night. So because you won't, you don't
- 50:55have anybody. I feel bad.
- 50:57I feel bad for Sangha. I feel like he probably like
- 51:04looking at the picture of having like, hey, I'm coming in as a
- 51:07three behind Verlander and Scherzer and all this buzz.
- 51:13And then next thing you know, 365 days later, he's having a
- 51:18front A rotation that's just duct tape and chicken wire.
- 51:22He he's, he's the Japanese Jacob degrom.
- 51:25Now, not in terms of performance necessarily but just in terms of
- 51:29looking behind him going, all right, pop on my back, I guess
- 51:33I'll freaking love you clowns around for 162.
- 51:37Just, you know, it's crazy. Poor guy.
- 51:41Poor guy, Poor guy. I don't feel bad for the Mets.
- 51:43I feel bad for him. Yeah, I couldn't care less about
- 51:46the Mets. Dylan, Cease a couple guys.
- 51:51Let's let's talk. Dylan Cease.
- 51:52Marcus Stroman. A couple names have been floated
- 51:54around, obviously the Stroman being the free agent.
- 52:02I I've been seeing that the Yankees are the favorites.
- 52:07You and I chat about this the other day.
- 52:10It sounds like he's ending up with one of one of our ball
- 52:14clubs, whether it's the Yankees or Red Sox.
- 52:18So this is. Besides, with the Red Sox, Will
- 52:21you Will, would you think you can get unblocked somehow on
- 52:25Twitter? I don't.
- 52:26I don't want to be unblocked. You don't want to clown like I
- 52:29don't need that in my life. I don't need that.
- 52:31And I'll be more than fine without it.
- 52:34That's kind of how I feel. I just want winners, dude.
- 52:37Like, I just like, I don't care about names.
- 52:40I'm at that point where I don't care about names.
- 52:43I just want selfless winners, keywords, selfless.
- 52:48It just he he's never come off selfless before.
- 52:53But at the same time, I'm like, I wouldn't hate the Yankees
- 52:58coming into like this. More of an evil, hated
- 53:04narrative. And maybe he adds to it.
- 53:07But then again, like you tried that with Donaldson and it
- 53:10failed. So I don't know.
- 53:12I don't know anymore. I just want winners and he
- 53:14doesn't seem like one of me. I'm of the two of us who would
- 53:20hate our lives more because this is like some This is almost like
- 53:27a twisted bet that we have no control over.
- 53:31I know, I know, one of us is going to be the loser here.
- 53:35And I'm just wondering who would hate, hate our lives more?
- 53:41I don't know. I think, based on what you just
- 53:43said, I think you. I'm not saying you'd come around
- 53:46to liking him, but I think you would tolerate him.
- 53:48I I do not think I could tolerate.
- 53:50I think I could tolerate Marcus Stroman.
- 53:52I think I could. That makes sense.
- 53:55Though I'm not I'm not like criticizing you, but what you're
- 53:58what what you're saying about like the evil empire and trying
- 54:00to recapture even just a little bit of that.
- 54:02I I get it. And so it's like if if adding
- 54:05Stroman is is a is a part of that to make that happen.
- 54:09I get it. But in a year, we're not going
- 54:12to compete anyway. And you're going to make me sit
- 54:15down and watch Stroman throw every fifth day?
- 54:16No, I'm. I'm good.
- 54:19Maybe I'm just grasping it, that nostalgia.
- 54:24Obviously the Dodgers are the new Evil Empire.
- 54:26So, like, when we're talking about trying to recapture that
- 54:31narrative by signing Marcus Stroman, we're far off from what
- 54:37we used to be. So I don't.
- 54:39I don't know. I'd.
- 54:41I'd like to see him elsewhere. Let's just say that.
- 54:44Please go somewhere else. I'm all good.
- 54:47I mean I've been saying it for like the last year plus like the
- 54:50only thing I could really say to you is like what have you done
- 54:54since O 9? Like you have fallen so far off
- 54:57the map. But beyond that I I can't say
- 55:00anything dude. Like at least at least heading
- 55:03into 2024, you guys are in a position to compete for a
- 55:06division and and beyond, but. That's it.
- 55:09Like that's the bringing in Soto is like the only and it's not
- 55:13just Soto. It's the fact that he's here and
- 55:15like we're we got to try and convince him to stay.
- 55:18You got to somewhat push chips in the middle of the table.
- 55:21So, like, I just dude, you just go try to make a trade
- 55:24somewhere. Like, just go try to make a
- 55:26trade. We don't need to sign Strowman,
- 55:30Loser. Speaking of trade Dylan, see
- 55:34it's another name I mentioned. It sounds like the the White Sox
- 55:41are maybe pulling that back a little bit.
- 55:43It sounds like the asking price might be a little bit too much.
- 55:48The one team that I think just has to make this happen, and I I
- 55:53would think you might be on board with this, the Baltimore
- 55:56Orioles. Yeah, like if asking price is
- 56:00the issue. They're the one that can answer
- 56:02it. Like as the Orioles, if you're
- 56:04OK with this guy's body of work, if you're OK with the contract
- 56:07situation and all it comes down to is asking price and
- 56:12prospects. You.
- 56:15Fit that bill. That's you.
- 56:16Like this is your guy to lose. If you're the Orioles, go out
- 56:20and get Dylan Sees. We've been saying this for the
- 56:23last. Year and a half.
- 56:25Year and a half. Like, it's disappointing to see
- 56:28that they haven't made that move, whatever that move was.
- 56:33I mean, there for a while I was, I was really hoping they'd pull,
- 56:36they'd pull Trey in. Obviously he goes to Philly and
- 56:41it it seems as though their their infield is going to shake
- 56:44out just fine anyway. So pitching would be the next
- 56:49big thing, starting pitching A frontline arm.
- 56:51And this is a guy that could be that for you.
- 56:53I know he had a rocky year, but if you can, if you can recapture
- 56:57what he's capable of, what he's shown you as a frontline guy,
- 57:01that's a perfect fit in Baltimore.
- 57:03So not sure why we haven't made that happen yet.
- 57:06I don't know either. I was looking into like numbers
- 57:09and stuff just to see like similarity and I'm I'm curious
- 57:13to see if if the White Sox are crossing into that same same
- 57:21territory they they did with Giulito, like your asking price
- 57:26was so high, then he came out and he didn't deliver the
- 57:31performance that would justify that asking price.
- 57:37And then like a year or two floats by.
- 57:39And then then he's 30, and then you move on from him with
- 57:44nothing to to show for. It kind of feels like what?
- 57:49Like the White Sox MO lately. So I'd hate to see that.
- 57:54I'd like to see him go succeed somewhere.
- 57:56Yeah, and on that you you don't know what the maybe the Orioles
- 58:01are calling their bluff like you they're going you're asking for
- 58:04a heck of a lot but are you really sure he's worth that?
- 58:07Because sure, he could turn things around, but it's it's
- 58:12also equally possible that he doesn't.
- 58:15So you want to maybe revisit the asking price.
- 58:18If so, we can talk. You don't know what's going on
- 58:20behind closed doors, but true if in in a perfect world, I think
- 58:25the OS make a great deal of sense for.
- 58:29White Sox figured out, dude, so I'm asking so much.
- 58:35Last thing I wanted to get to Heim Bloom.
- 58:40I'll let you run with this one. See you later, guy.
- 58:44I mean, we'd we'd said our farewell a while ago at this
- 58:48point, but gets picked up by the Cardinals to serve as the
- 58:55advisor. So not quite the same role he
- 58:59had in Boston. But I think for good reason,
- 59:02teams are maybe a little hesitant to slot him into any
- 59:05sort of role. The quote The quote is what got
- 59:08me. Where'd he go?
- 59:12The Cardinals. Weird.
- 59:15OK, the the quote is what got me.
- 59:18Bill DeWitt, Junior, I I believe.
- 59:25No, no, no, it was John Mosalak, he said.
- 59:29I have known Heim for a long time and feel that this is a
- 59:33great opportunity for the Saint Louis Cardinals.
- 59:35It would be good to get an outside perspective of our
- 59:39organization from someone who is as well respected as Heim there
- 59:46are. Agents.
- 59:48There are agents who have talked about it the for the for Himes
- 59:53tenure. They talked about how Hime was
- 59:56running the Red Sox like a small market team.
- 1:00:00So unless you're talking about like other baseball executives,
- 1:00:05I don't know if you could say that he's widely respected in
- 1:00:09the baseball world. Yeah.
- 1:00:12Because you kind of saw how he ran his former franchise.
- 1:00:18So I'd. I'm not saying he's not an
- 1:00:23intelligent baseball person, he's obviously brilliant.
- 1:00:26But to say I. Don't know.
- 1:00:30I'm. I'm imagining that this is how
- 1:00:33it went. He called his agent and he was
- 1:00:35like, please, please just find me a front office job somewhere
- 1:00:39in the league somewhere. The best case scenario is you go
- 1:00:45somewhere as an assistant, as an advisor that has success.
- 1:00:50You'll ride coattails and find a new job.
- 1:00:53After that, it's just I don't. I don't know if the Cardinals
- 1:01:00are the the right spot for him in that scenario.
- 1:01:03Maybe they they were the only ones calling.
- 1:01:05I have no idea, but whatever. A bunch of geriatrics out there
- 1:01:11in the rotation. It'd be all good.
- 1:01:12Yeah. Like, stay away, have fun.
- 1:01:15I don't want you here. About does it.
- 1:01:20I know we got to get out of here.
- 1:01:21I did have one other thing I wanted to revisit our We kind of
- 1:01:26got away from it for a while, but our Unbreakable records
- 1:01:30little mini segment series for the offseason.
- 1:01:35I know we only have a few minutes, so I'll keep it quick,
- 1:01:37but the Bobby Cox ejection record?
- 1:01:43I think I I sent you the number a while back, but in case I
- 1:01:49didn't do you, are you familiar with just how many times he was
- 1:01:52ejected? I genuinely don't even have a
- 1:01:54guess. I I how I don't even know it's
- 1:02:04high. How many games How many games do
- 1:02:07Major League Baseball teams play in a full season?
- 1:02:10162. That's how many times he was
- 1:02:13ejected. Really.
- 1:02:14So he's. Ejected a full season where he
- 1:02:18was. He managed for 29 seasons, but
- 1:02:21when he'd take into account the ejections, he essentially
- 1:02:24managed 28 seasons of baseball. First off, that'll never happen
- 1:02:31again. Never.
- 1:02:32We're never gonna see a manager stick around for nearly 30
- 1:02:35years. No, ain't gonna happen.
- 1:02:38So that should tell you all it needs to all all you need.
- 1:02:44And review, replay, review. So.
- 1:02:50You know, and looking into this record, I I mean, dare I say
- 1:02:56this is the safest unbreakable record of.
- 1:02:59What's the next even closest to active managers right now?
- 1:03:05Cut it in half. No, I'm dead serious.
- 1:03:10Cut it in half. Really. 81 Bruce Bochy.
- 1:03:16And he's been around forever since.
- 1:03:21Time was invented and he is on his way out, presumably in the
- 1:03:26very near future. Yeah, And he's 9th all time with
- 1:03:3181 Top five. You got Bobby Cox, John McGraw.
- 1:03:35John McGraw is 1/21. What's his name?
- 1:03:41I can never pronounce it. Leo.
- 1:03:45Leo Deritcher, Sure. Durocher as 100.
- 1:03:51Earl Weaver, 96. Antonio Larusso with 93.
- 1:03:57Yeah, I you know, I don't. I don't see this record being
- 1:04:08even remotely approached. Forget being touched or
- 1:04:12surpassed. Like not even the only active
- 1:04:16guy is Bruce Bocci and he's 9th with half with half and it it
- 1:04:26goes back to the whole like instant replay and Robo Oomps
- 1:04:30and all that stuff. This is, this is what you miss
- 1:04:32out on. This is this is what you.
- 1:04:34You you've eliminated an entirely an entertaining section
- 1:04:39of of the game. Like a just a facet of the game
- 1:04:43that I don't care what calls were missed.
- 1:04:46What calls were wrong. Call me crazy, I'm I genuinely
- 1:04:52miss seeing guys get tossed and the average I was I was looking
- 1:04:56into I didn't get the numbers but the average for ejections
- 1:04:59per per game are going like they're just.
- 1:05:03Yeah, so I know we, I think we, we laugh about like Boone
- 1:05:07getting tossed four or five times in a year and he's he's
- 1:05:12got to be like leading the charge.
- 1:05:13Yeah, we're like Haroldine. Boone is like the guy, like this
- 1:05:17guy. He's off the rails, man.
- 1:05:19Really. Yeah.
- 1:05:21And then you look at the well, first you look at what he gets
- 1:05:23ejected over and I'm like this guy, this is no Earl Weaver.
- 1:05:27But then you just look at the numbers at the end of the
- 1:05:29season, you're like comparatively, this is a, this
- 1:05:32is nothing, this is a walk in the park for Bobby Cox.
- 1:05:38Unreal. I miss it.
- 1:05:40I miss it. It was awesome.
- 1:05:44He's the only little nugget here.
- 1:05:45He's the only man Bobby Cox, to be ejected from 2 World Series
- 1:05:49games in 1992, was tossed for throwing a helmet onto the
- 1:05:53field. The Sky Dome.
- 1:05:54Sure, at the Sky Dome during game three against the Blue
- 1:05:56Jays. Sure, I like that.
- 1:06:01What a legend. I miss the rocking.
- 1:06:03Remember the rocking in the dugout?
- 1:06:04Yeah, good old. Days, man.
- 1:06:08He did it in. He reached that threshold in
- 1:06:124508. Games recorded 100 win season
- 1:06:16six times. Remember the Hall of Fame?
- 1:06:20Friggin stud. What a guy.
- 1:06:24Yeah, he did. He pass away.
- 1:06:30Yeah. Few years ago.
- 1:06:32Yeah. What year was that?
- 1:06:36It's gotta be somewhat recent, four or five years.
- 1:06:40Wait a minute. Is he still?
- 1:06:42Is he still alive? No way.
- 1:06:44Is he still with us? He's still rocking.
- 1:06:46Could have sworn he passed. Away, I thought he did, too.
- 1:06:50Wow. He's still with.
- 1:06:51Oh, that's what it was. He was.
- 1:06:53I remember hearing the reports about health complications.
- 1:06:56That's what it was, because he was in the hospital for a
- 1:06:58variety of things, but. Sounds like he's good now.
- 1:07:01He's still, he's still kicking, man 82.
- 1:07:05Let's honor my man before before anything crazy happens.
- 1:07:08All right, Graves. Like, let's.
- 1:07:09Let's do that please. Let's give him his day from.
- 1:07:12Tulsa, OK. Of the two of, let me ask you
- 1:07:18before we get out of here, of the two unbreakable records that
- 1:07:20I think you and now that we know now we've dove into this a
- 1:07:24little bit. Between this and Cal Ripken's
- 1:07:28record, which of the two do we think is more unbreakable?
- 1:07:35That's it's like A1 uppercase A and one lowercase A.
- 1:07:41You know what I mean? It's not even A1A1B.
- 1:07:43It's an uppercase A and a lowercase.
- 1:07:46A. Because you look at Cal Ripken's
- 1:07:49record and you're like, there's it's impossible.
- 1:07:52But then you look at this and you're like, I I hate to say it,
- 1:08:01but is is Bobby Cox's record more unbreakable simply because
- 1:08:06of the way that the game is changing?
- 1:08:08Like, I'll probably say yes. You just can't get ejected at
- 1:08:12that. Rate anymore it's it's
- 1:08:13impossible. Something tells me that like
- 1:08:15the, the, the, the there are going to be guys that try and
- 1:08:24find some type of longevity is like a priority in their career.
- 1:08:27So I I I guess it just like hypothetically because I think
- 1:08:32it's never going to happen either way.
- 1:08:34But yeah, let's give Bobby Cox the 1A uppercase A.
- 1:08:40And not just just to reiterate, neither record is getting
- 1:08:43touched. But yeah, degree of impossible
- 1:08:46is what we're looking at. Yeah, yeah, I I wonder if like,
- 1:08:50I don't know when fines were being introduced, but if fines
- 1:08:54were so minuscule in like the first 50 to 80 of his ejections
- 1:08:59and now fines or you know, 10s of thousands of dollars,
- 1:09:04sometimes it's like that probably nips it in the butt a
- 1:09:07little bit quicker on top of all the other stuff.
- 1:09:11Well, it might be relative too, because manage, I mean Craig
- 1:09:14counts a part for example, managers are making far more.
- 1:09:17So I don't know if it's if the rate has increased or if it's
- 1:09:20just kind of. I'd like to know on.
- 1:09:22Track. If anyone's bored one day, look
- 1:09:24that up for us. Yeah, dig that up for us.
- 1:09:27What? How our our manager finds more
- 1:09:32than they were back in the Bobby Cox days.
- 1:09:35Relative to salary? Relative to salary, Let's get
- 1:09:39homework assignment. Let's get home assignment.
- 1:09:41We'll leave you guys with that. It's good to be back.
- 1:09:44Thank you all for for bearing with us.
