- 0:08Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Two Shot
- 0:10Tuesday. It's Barry Nixon alongside the
- 0:13one and only Jason Riley. Back with you for another update
- 0:16heavy episode. But we promise new things are
- 0:19coming to the show and we can't say anything more about that.
- 0:22But new things are coming and we're going to be changing up a
- 0:25couple of things. But until we do.
- 0:27Yeah. It's more of an update heavy
- 0:29episode. Jason Riley, welcome back.
- 0:31How are you my friends? I'm quite well and I treasure
- 0:33these episodes, Barry. These are a living monument to
- 0:36our friendship and I'm so glad that our fans are able to come
- 0:39along with us for these journeys.
- 0:40Me too. You know, as we mentioned this,
- 0:43and I'll just say this, we are on a March to 300 episodes like
- 0:47we are now, you know, 161516 episodes away.
- 0:50So this is pretty exciting, Barry.
- 0:52In this calendar year, we will have done 600 shots of various
- 0:56liquids together. Yeah, and I would wager that
- 0:59probably 550 of those were alcohol based.
- 1:03I think so I. Think so, probably the way it
- 1:06worked. Speaking of which, should we
- 1:09have one of those right now to kick off I?
- 1:11Think we should. I think we absolutely should.
- 1:14What have you got? Let's begin.
- 1:16Jameson Black Barrel. I told you a couple weeks ago
- 1:19how excited I was to find it has returned to my local, so here it
- 1:23is. What about yourself?
- 1:24Nice. And I've got just a little bit
- 1:26left and I finished off the bottle of a classic Jameson that
- 1:30was sitting there. I enjoyed in shot format and
- 1:33here it is one of two. Here's to you, Jay, and to our
- 1:36audience. Cheers, really get on the tongue
- 1:42that one and didn't get over the tongue at all sharp.
- 1:46Mine is much sharper. The black barrel is much
- 1:48smoother than classic Jamison. You know, it really is and it's
- 1:53only, I don't know, maybe 10 bucks more.
- 1:55Yeah, it's well worth it. Now the classics, great.
- 1:58And when we go out, we, you and I always do shots of classic
- 2:00wherever we can. Happy to say the We Chief Now
- 2:02features Jamison because they didn't for a while, but they
- 2:05were, they must be listening to the show and they were happy to
- 2:07furnish us with some last time we went and had our in person.
- 2:10That's right. I was there at the time of this
- 2:12recording. I was there last evening, as a
- 2:13matter of fact. And yes, it's still there.
- 2:16They they love the Jameson. It is still flowing, Jay.
- 2:18All right. Well, what brought you to the
- 2:20wheat chief? And was that perhaps a stop
- 2:22along the way as we it was into? Yeah.
- 2:26Yeah, it was the final stop. Besides, wow.
- 2:29Yeah, it was a. Good evening.
- 2:31Maybe tell me about this whole evening.
- 2:33Put it together, because I didn't even know about it until
- 2:35like the day before when you announced it.
- 2:38Usually you're announcing these things months, if not years
- 2:41ahead. I don't think about years ahead,
- 2:43but yes, mums for sure. Yeah, it's 100%.
- 2:48Please excuse me. At the time of this recording,
- 2:50it's Tuesday. It was last evening, as a matter
- 2:53of fact, Friend of the show, friend of ours, Chris Whitby and
- 2:57my buddy Brad and his wife Danielle.
- 2:59We went to history and saw a band called The Hives out of
- 3:03Sweden and they were absolutely fantastic.
- 3:07There was a band that opened for them called The Chats from
- 3:10Australia. I had seen them last summer, at
- 3:12least Palace. This was the second time seeing
- 3:13them. They were great too, very high
- 3:15energy, sort of like Australian punk rock band and The Hives.
- 3:20I'm telling you, I don't think I've seen a show quite like this
- 3:23in terms of the consistent amazing energy throughout the
- 3:26entire thing. But also the front man, his
- 3:29crowd work style was amazing. Like he was cracking jokes that
- 3:34were actually landing. You know, sometimes you can get
- 3:36those sort of cringy moments where the the the band talks of
- 3:40the audience. This guy is extremely polished
- 3:43and he was, you know, cracking jokes.
- 3:45And what was he saying? I I mean, nothing really comes
- 3:48to mind. I can't remember, but I was
- 3:49laughing and everyone was. It was just like his interaction
- 3:52with the crowd. He was calling people out.
- 3:54He was identifying people who were crowd surfing.
- 3:56He was ripping on his bandmates with some of his introductions
- 4:00were kind of over the top right introductions, you know, the
- 4:02kind of thing that you. Are familiar with you?
- 4:05Yeah, with each other. When we exactly.
- 4:07We're pumping each other up. So he's doing that for his own
- 4:10band. Have you seen?
- 4:11Them before never. Never.
- 4:13What made you interested in seeing the Hives?
- 4:15Well, I just needed to. This was one of those bands that
- 4:18was on my list. Oh, I really enjoy their music.
- 4:20Yeah, yeah, they've been around a while, but yeah, they're
- 4:24they're they're still rocking. So it was, you know, when the
- 4:27opportunity came, I had to jump on it.
- 4:30All right. So take me through this
- 4:32experience. Now when you got there, did you
- 4:36have, was there AVIP purchase, was this general admission, was
- 4:40there any VIP available? I don't know if there was.
- 4:42I didn't look into it because I was with three other people that
- 4:45wouldn't have been down with VIP.
- 4:47Like the additional cost that is.
- 4:49Yeah, I just didn't look. But history?
- 4:52There's really no bad spot. No, I've never been.
- 4:55See, and I hope to change that at some point.
- 4:57If a band that you find worthy to go see live, if they come to
- 5:01history, I think we should definitely check it out 'cause
- 5:04there's, there's, it's just really nicely laid out.
- 5:07It's a great venue. There's a ton of, you know,
- 5:10kiosks for ordering your drinks. You can actually pop outside and
- 5:14have a smoke if you're so inclined.
- 5:17I mean, it's one of the few venues that actually allows you
- 5:18to do that. So that you can order from a
- 5:20kiosk. Well I I meant like individual.
- 5:23It's not a kiosk. A play, a person serving.
- 5:26Yeah, OK. Exactly, but there are there's
- 5:28multiple yes. It's a big old bar with at least
- 5:325-6 bartenders waiting to take your order, and they're happy to
- 5:35do it. That's good.
- 5:37Yeah. All right.
- 5:37So you get in there, you're happy.
- 5:39Is there much waiting beforehand?
- 5:41Because that can spoil a a concert?
- 5:43Oh, great. So you got right in.
- 5:45Breezed right in. Jay.
- 5:46You would have loved it. That's right.
- 5:48But I love I love to breeze in. I don't like to be I'm not.
- 5:51I like to be waiting. I paid money.
- 5:52You need to get this. We paid money to be there.
- 5:54Why are you holding us up outside of there?
- 5:56So this is great to hear that you breezed in.
- 5:58That makes me relieved for you that you're ready to enjoy the
- 6:02whole experience. There was one strange thing
- 6:05though, I will say. Aha.
- 6:07There was like a pre screening before you actually get to going
- 6:09through the metal detector and the guy asked to see my keys and
- 6:14I handed him my house keys. He examined them and then he
- 6:17said, oh, you got your wallet on you.
- 6:19I said yeah, of course. So he asked to see my wallet and
- 6:22he actually opened my wallet and noticed and looked in there and
- 6:26saw that there was cash in there and he handed it right back to
- 6:28me. But I've never in my life had
- 6:30anyone searched my wallet. So I thought that was
- 6:33interesting. Yeah, been to some clubs where
- 6:35they will check your wallet because they want to see if you
- 6:38may have some paraphernalia stashed in there that I
- 6:40understand the. Reason for it?
- 6:42Oh, you did get that? You didn't think you just wanted
- 6:44to look through some pictures of yours.
- 6:45Make sure you had up to date driver's license.
- 6:47Grab a. 50 out of my wallet. No, I didn't think he was trying
- 6:49to rob me. I've never seen that before.
- 6:52Yeah, yeah. I wonder if they've been busted
- 6:54recently and so now they have to do a check.
- 6:57That could be why they have to demonstrate that they're, you
- 7:00know, working hard to keep everyone safe from the, the, the
- 7:03evils of drugs. Baggies.
- 7:06Yeah, Baggies of cocaines. Of drugs specifically?
- 7:08Yeah, exactly. Sure.
- 7:10So you get in pre screen, you get to the screen, now you're
- 7:13in. I need to know about the merch
- 7:15table. Did you make it to the merch
- 7:17table? Of course, yeah.
- 7:18I didn't buy anything, but I did look at what was on offer.
- 7:21Yeah, it had just been, you know, I'd, I'd had an expensive
- 7:24weekend away in Ottawa. That's another story.
- 7:27So I was like, do I need to? I don't think I needed to.
- 7:30I enjoyed the show, though. High energy.
- 7:33Could there have been a coffee cup?
- 7:34I could have seen you buying a coffee cup.
- 7:35That'll be hard to keep around you, but I can see that.
- 7:38A coffee cup of the hives. That's probably the last thing
- 7:41in the world that I would buy. I'm sorry.
- 7:43I I know you want me to yes, Angie and say, yeah, I would
- 7:45have got a thermos. I would have got a lunch, pail,
- 7:47whatever, whatever they had a. Plastic lunch pail with the
- 7:50flipper sippy cups. I love those.
- 7:53They were great. So, yeah, so the chat started
- 7:58and you saw them with the chats and you saw them with Rob Pete's
- 8:00I believe last time, right? Did you talk about it on the?
- 8:03Show it was a different Rob Rob Ferraz.
- 8:04Rob Ferraz. OK, so we didn't talk about it
- 8:06on the show, but you did see it with Rob Ferraz?
- 8:09Yeah. She went to them again.
- 8:10Did they play a lot of the same stuff or did they have any new
- 8:13stuff? Yeah, to me, it all sounded new.
- 8:17Jay. OK.
- 8:18Great. To cast my mind back to last
- 8:20summer, it's to try to identify like.
- 8:23Remember, a set list is a lot to ask.
- 8:26I see, so this isn't a band that you've been following the chats?
- 8:29Necessarily not tuned. Into every song.
- 8:31OK, 'cause I was. Not every song.
- 8:33You like I I love the chats, I love the.
- 8:36They were great. The way they interacted with the
- 8:38crowd, the hives, but can't recall really much of it at all.
- 8:41But oh, I can recall, but I, I can't recall the set lists and
- 8:45the name, the name of the songs. OK, the chats are a little too,
- 8:48you know, new for me to to be able to drill that down.
- 8:51All right. What?
- 8:52Regardless, they were great. The whole evening was fantastic,
- 8:55it really was. Terrific.
- 8:56All right, The hives come out and that's all I want.
- 8:58Last thing I want to hear about the hives come out.
- 9:00They play for about how long? Yeah, So they took the stage
- 9:03around 9:00. They they played until at least
- 9:0410:40 because the interesting thing in history is they will
- 9:07continue to serve as long as the band performing wants them to.
- 9:12So the band said you can keep serving until 10:40.
- 9:15And that was how we kind of were able to sniff out that that's
- 9:18when they're wrapping up, including their encore, which
- 9:21was cool. So they kept it, kept the bar
- 9:23open for the entire show, and not every man does that, but
- 9:25they did, and that was appreciated.
- 9:27I wonder why he wouldn't. Yeah, I don't know.
- 9:30And it was a Monday night. It was a pretty good crowd for a
- 9:32Monday night too. It wasn't sold out, but it took
- 9:34a little bit of warming up. But the the front man of the
- 9:36Hives certainly got the crowd whipped up eventually.
- 9:39But it took a little bit of because it's the classic Toronto
- 9:42crowd, right? A lot of people and an older
- 9:44crowd, you know, to skewed a little bit older.
- 9:46Yeah. But the cool thing about that
- 9:48was Chris Whitby and I also noticed this, that there was
- 9:50barely any phones out at all. People were actually just
- 9:54enjoying the show, that's what. You want.
- 9:56That's what you want. I do too.
- 9:58It takes you right out of it. It does.
- 10:00And it's like what? Like somebody's got a better
- 10:02seat than you, most likely. And they'll put their shit up on
- 10:04YouTube so you can watch it later.
- 10:05Just enjoy the show live if you need to.
- 10:08I don't know why you want shitty sound.
- 10:10You've got Spotify for great sound.
- 10:12You're there live. You're not going to get a better
- 10:13picture. Yeah, I don't know.
- 10:15I don't know if I agree. It doesn't make sense.
- 10:16So I'm glad to hear you and Mr. Whitby got to enjoy that.
- 10:19And then finally, you wrapped it up at the wheat chief.
- 10:22All four of you went. Nope.
- 10:23Or Brad and Danielle. It was a regular work day I
- 10:26booked ahead. I wanted to set up Future Me for
- 10:29success and so that involved taking a vacation day.
- 10:32Excuse me? Chris Whitby didn't have to work
- 10:33until 5:00 PM today, so it worked out great.
- 10:35We, he drove us back to the Wheat Chief and it was only like
- 10:384 or five people sitting at the bar, but we ended up chatting
- 10:41with them. And I've had, this has been a
- 10:43thing lately. And I told you about this,
- 10:44having random conversations with people.
- 10:46I ended up talking to some couple from Collingwood at the
- 10:49show last night, you know, right at the very end, which was kind
- 10:51of fun. It's a, it's a challenge, you
- 10:53know, to try to interact with randos.
- 10:57Like, why not? Let's just experience the rich
- 10:59tapestry of humanity. Maybe you'll teach me about that
- 11:02someday. Yeah, I'm just learning myself,
- 11:04Jay. So you enjoyed that show, Let's
- 11:06do shot #2 and then there's one other big life event that
- 11:10happened to you just days before that that we want to cover off
- 11:12on. OK, yeah, yeah.
- 11:14Let's get into it. James going back.
- 11:16Yeah, You got the Jameson. OK, I'm sticking with Jameson
- 11:18too, but with the black barrel. Nice.
- 11:20Here we go. Cheers, cheers.
- 11:24It's sharp man. It's so sharp.
- 11:26Like little knives, but great, but in a good way.
- 11:29This is interesting because usually your second shot is way
- 11:32smoother, but it looks like you're both.
- 11:34Both of yours today were a little bit rough.
- 11:37I'm still feeling it traveling down my esophagus right now,
- 11:40which is great. Okay.
- 11:42Dogs is heading South, That's the important thing.
- 11:44Let's hear about your annual trip.
- 11:46You've talked about it on the show every year.
- 11:48I have two Canada for your Leafs Senators hockey game that for
- 11:53some reason is always on a Saturday night this day.
- 11:55I feel like this one is a planned one at this time of
- 11:57year. Exactly right.
- 11:58That's I guess that's just how the hockey gods align the
- 12:01schedule. But the Leafs are typically,
- 12:03yeah, we've never been there for a Friday night game.
- 12:05It's always been Saturday. It must be done on purpose and
- 12:08it's always this time of year like it's in March.
- 12:10I mean, well, last year was February, but yes, it's later in
- 12:13the year typically that they will come back later in the
- 12:16season. I should say it was a great
- 12:17time. This was by far one of the most
- 12:20immersive fan experiences that I've ever had.
- 12:23Because of the seats that we were able to get.
- 12:25Brad and I went and we sat behind the net.
- 12:28We were only four rows from the glass, so row D right on the
- 12:32aisle, which is where you want to be.
- 12:33And I'm telling you, Jay, like we were looking through the
- 12:36glass the entire game and all the action is unfolding like
- 12:40just spitting distance from where you're sitting.
- 12:42Yeah, every time there was a hit and you saw guys getting stapled
- 12:46to the glass and you could see their faces turn towards you and
- 12:51you could see there's the skin, their cheeks getting rubbed up
- 12:54against the glass. It was wild.
- 12:57And you felt every one of those hits.
- 12:59I was like, holy shit, this is. I didn't take my eyes off the
- 13:02game. Because when you're sitting
- 13:03further up, you can kind of look around the stadium and you're
- 13:06wandering. Your eyes maybe can wander a
- 13:08little bit. This it eliminates that.
- 13:11Yeah. It's like having blinders on and
- 13:12you're seeing everything, everything.
- 13:15It was really great. Like, honestly, I kept talking
- 13:18about how good the seats were to Brad.
- 13:20He's like, I know I'm sitting right here.
- 13:21Eventually he was like, OK, enough about the seats.
- 13:23We know the seats are good. They're good seats.
- 13:25I was like, yeah, but they're really good seats.
- 13:27Do you feel those hits? He's like, yes, I feel them.
- 13:30Anyway, I was just over the moon.
- 13:31It was worth every penny. And even though the Leafs are
- 13:33not in the playoffs at the time of this recording, and maybe the
- 13:36Ottawa Senators aren't going to be either, but it was still a
- 13:38fun time. And the Leafs unfortunately did
- 13:40not win. But.
- 13:41We were chipping with. People at the game, as we
- 13:43normally do, we were talking to the people in front of us beside
- 13:46us. You know, everyone was kind of
- 13:47like, you know, throwing a little brat, you know, like
- 13:49barbs at one another. And as Brad and I were walking
- 13:52home, we we were getting chirped like crazy.
- 13:55There were people chirping at us from their vehicles as they
- 13:58drove by us as we were walking back to the hotel house.
- 14:00But it was all in good fun. It was not like, you know,
- 14:03throwing F bombs at you. It was just like just
- 14:06good-natured ribbing between 2 fan bases.
- 14:09I think that's the only way to say it That's good.
- 14:11Did you go to that bar that you went to?
- 14:13Was it last year, the year before?
- 14:14There's like 1 bar that you you post it up and maybe it was the
- 14:17night before. Maybe.
- 14:18I'm Yeah. Well, we there's not a lot of
- 14:21options in Canada. No, I will say we went to
- 14:24milestones on the Friday night, but after the game we went to
- 14:27Jack Astor's and yes, I did have the chicken tenders.
- 14:30As we know that is. That's rock solid snuttering
- 14:33right there on the side. On the side, Yes, of course.
- 14:36For you on the side you like, got to be on the.
- 14:37Side for me Jay yeah but it was great and we were chatting with
- 14:40people at the bar there too it was like a lot of like random
- 14:44interactions with people the in the last well I guess the
- 14:47weekend ended at the show last night so the last like 72 hours
- 14:50it was pretty cool I. Mean and the fans.
- 14:52In Ottawa are really fun. They're they're great people and
- 14:55as. An extrovert that fuels you up
- 14:57like you love a random chat with someone you don't know and you
- 15:02get to know them and you ask good questions and you ask of
- 15:04them to come back to you with good questions.
- 15:07I do ask. To ask questions, I do like to
- 15:09leave with questions. That's usually what gets people
- 15:12their defenses down versus just spewing information at somebody.
- 15:15But you know what, you're funny. I this is just a new theme.
- 15:18This is, this is something that this is something that Linda has
- 15:21actually kind of implemented. She told me at the start of the
- 15:24year she had a goal to have a certain number of random
- 15:27conversations throughout the year.
- 15:29And, and that kind of inspired me to say, yeah, why wouldn't we
- 15:31do that? Why can't we be a little bit
- 15:33more friendly? Because Toronto is it's a little
- 15:35harder. It's it's thought of as a bit of
- 15:37a more reserved little, maybe a touch colder.
- 15:40Not cold as in hostile, but just like maybe not necessarily
- 15:43interested in a random conversation.
- 15:45But yeah, lately people have been all up for it.
- 15:48So I think that's maybe something people need now.
- 15:50I don't know. I think so.
- 15:52It's funny, I say, and I just love this.
- 15:54This is this is what I love about.
- 15:56Like, it's a classic executive producer Linda Lebrun.
- 15:59It's like a structured goal to have random conversations.
- 16:03I can appreciate that so much. It's like you put structure to
- 16:06randomness, Like not everyone can do that.
- 16:08She, I imagine, pulls it off Florida State.
- 16:11And so you've come along for the ride, but you always like to
- 16:15chitchat. Like you're just you're fueled
- 16:17up by your extra version. Well, that's nice of you.
- 16:20I, I, I do that more so like when I'm on vacation, anytime
- 16:24we've been S random chats all the time, it's a lot easier.
- 16:28And like also when we went out east in Eastern Canada, there's
- 16:31certain parts of Canada that are much more chatty, but I wouldn't
- 16:36necessarily say Southern Ontario is a chatty hotspot, but it's
- 16:41maybe becoming 1. I don't know.
- 16:43This is new for this is new for me.
- 16:44If it is, it's. Because of you and Linda, making
- 16:47it so very like this has been a lot of updates from you and I'm
- 16:51glad that you've had these great experiences in literally the
- 16:54last 72 hours you've amassed and fun memories for one regular
- 16:59person's lifetime. So for you, it's about 20
- 17:02minutes of memories because you are, of course, massive in your
