- 2:09Speaker 3: Hello, Welcome back to a brand new episode of the
- 2:11Speaker 3: Beyond the Blood Podcast. My name is Chris Higgins. I
- 2:15Speaker 3: go by the Bearded Film Guy online. As always, I'm
- 2:17Speaker 3: joined by my beautiful co host down here, Steve After
- 2:20Speaker 3: Hours Video. How are you man?
- 2:22Speaker 4: Wonderful?
- 2:22Speaker 3: Happy to be here, dude, we have something a little
- 2:26Speaker 3: different today. It's been a while since we've done an
- 2:27Speaker 3: interview one here. We've been just so busy tearing into
- 2:30Speaker 3: commentary tracks and doing expert analysis, you know, leading the
- 2:33Speaker 3: way and film criticism and conversation. Give ourselves some credit here,
- 2:39Speaker 3: doing pretty good. But today we have a little interview,
- 2:44Speaker 3: a little hangout with graphic designer, illustrator artists. I'll add,
- 2:50Speaker 3: gooulish Gary. How are you, man? Thank you for joining us?
- 2:53Speaker 5: Oh, thanks man, thank you for having me.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Of course, of course, I think I was telling you
- 2:58Speaker 3: the other day that a couple months ago, I was
- 3:01Speaker 3: walking through the aisles of Barnes and Noble with my
- 3:03Speaker 3: wife somewhere where we frequent way way too often more
- 3:06Speaker 3: than we should, and came across a whole end cap
- 3:10Speaker 3: full of your new covers for I think it was
- 3:12Speaker 3: what five Stephen King titles, right, Yeah?
- 3:16Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I think it was five and total. Yeah.
- 3:18Speaker 6: That's awesome, Man's that's so cool to hear that they
- 3:21Speaker 6: were displayed that way.
- 3:23Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Did you go to like any of your local stores
- 3:26Speaker 3: and find them in the wild.
- 3:27Speaker 5: Or I did?
- 3:29Speaker 6: I saw it in the most unexpected place. I mean,
- 3:34Speaker 6: we have something called Shoppers drug Mark here. It's like
- 3:36Speaker 6: a well Greens and they have a book section, but
- 3:40Speaker 6: they also have a post office and that's where I
- 3:42Speaker 6: take on my mail and my orders over too. And yeah,
- 3:47Speaker 6: they were right on the shelf there, like at least three.
- 3:50Speaker 5: Of them anyway.
- 3:51Speaker 6: I did not all of them, but a couple of
- 3:53Speaker 6: them anyway, and I was like, whoa, you know, it's
- 3:55Speaker 6: kind of a trip literally right down the road for me,
- 3:58Speaker 6: you know, seeing your artwork and uh, I guess like
- 4:02Speaker 6: a mainstream store like that was kind of a trip.
- 4:05Speaker 6: And then the first place I saw it was in
- 4:08Speaker 6: Target and I was at horrorund weekend maybe the year
- 4:12Speaker 6: first came out, maybe a couple of years ago now,
- 4:15Speaker 6: and uh down there in Ohio, and I was just,
- 4:18Speaker 6: you know, we always end up going to uh, you know,
- 4:21Speaker 6: a Target ticket supplies when we're at conventions, and there
- 4:25Speaker 6: they were in the book section, and you know, that
- 4:27Speaker 6: was really really cool to see.
- 4:29Speaker 5: You know, I was like, well, this ship, this is
- 4:31Speaker 5: this is pretty cool.
- 4:32Speaker 4: It's gotta be so surreal.
- 4:35Speaker 6: It was, yes, definitely, And yeah it was you know,
- 4:38Speaker 6: you don't you know, we do a lot of like, uh,
- 4:42Speaker 6: you know, boutique things or like a lot of uh,
- 4:46Speaker 6: you know, I guess like I've got a lot of
- 4:49Speaker 6: artwork on on like you know, I guess smaller scale.
- 4:52Speaker 5: Right like uh, I don't want to diminish that anything.
- 4:57Speaker 6: But you know, with a book like that, like a
- 4:59Speaker 6: Mainstrea book, I've never had anything distributed that far and
- 5:03Speaker 6: that that many copies of my artwork being printed, I
- 5:06Speaker 6: guess if you want to look at it that way.
- 5:08Speaker 6: And that's been a total total trip and something very cool,
- 5:12Speaker 6: and I was I'm blessed to have worked with Random
- 5:15Speaker 6: House and and the people there, the art director and
- 5:19Speaker 6: the marketing people there, they're amazing.
- 5:21Speaker 4: Yeah, that's incredible.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I came across so there. This is incredibly random.
- 5:27Speaker 3: But I live right near the Jersey Shore. I'm about
- 5:29Speaker 3: an hour and a half away, okay, on the Wildwood Boardwalk.
- 5:34Speaker 3: There's like a little gimmicky like rock shop they call it.
- 5:37Speaker 3: It's like a trendy you know. They sell like Deftones
- 5:41Speaker 3: records and think for over expensive. It's like one hundred
- 5:43Speaker 3: dollars they want for a thirty dollars record, right and right.
- 5:47Speaker 3: They have this little tiny soundtrack section that I always
- 5:51Speaker 3: go to because I always find like out of print
- 5:54Speaker 3: Waxwork records releases there and I was going through one
- 5:59Speaker 3: day and I remember I was I was already like
- 6:02Speaker 3: high on life because I found the Killer Clowns for
- 6:04Speaker 3: Matter Space like reissue, Yeah, grab that, And right behind
- 6:09Speaker 3: it is Friday the thirteenth Part three, the three D
- 6:11Speaker 3: art that you did with the lenticular art, and then
- 6:15Speaker 3: behind that was the Creep Show.
- 6:18Speaker 6: Oh yeah, right on yeaheah. There was the huge titles
- 6:21Speaker 6: that I got to do with Waxwork. And again, like
- 6:24Speaker 6: you know, when they approached me with these type of
- 6:26Speaker 6: things and little Expert said, hey, do you want to
- 6:28Speaker 6: do the you know, when you want to do Creep Show?
- 6:30Speaker 5: Absolutely, I'm in a huge Romero fan, you know. And
- 6:34Speaker 5: then and then you know.
- 6:37Speaker 6: With the Try thirteen Part three, they said do you
- 6:40Speaker 6: want to do part three with like can we do
- 6:43Speaker 6: something lenticular? Like they had this idea to kind of
- 6:45Speaker 6: make it, you know, do that, and I was like, well,
- 6:48Speaker 6: I've never done that before, but just tell me what
- 6:49Speaker 6: your printer needs, like how do I set how do
- 6:52Speaker 6: I do my file? How do I prepare my my
- 6:55Speaker 6: illustration and my files? And it was actually not that difficult.
- 6:59Speaker 6: I just to make sure every weapon was on its
- 7:01Speaker 6: own layer, and you know you can move that around
- 7:04Speaker 6: and and and just make sure that you could they
- 7:08Speaker 6: could print things separately to make that effect. And it
- 7:12Speaker 6: was so cool when it turned out. You know, it's
- 7:14Speaker 6: it's amazing when you can do like these these printing tricks,
- 7:17Speaker 6: and you know, I don't know what you call them,
- 7:21Speaker 6: you know, like just like extras, you know. Yeah, and
- 7:27Speaker 6: so yeah, Wax for those those two, you know, yeah,
- 7:31Speaker 6: they've been they've been reprinted many times, so they haven't readone.
- 7:34Speaker 5: The artwork, so I think they're they're still happy with.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Themsel How did that relationship first come about? I was
- 7:40Speaker 4: going to ask because I was going through, you know,
- 7:42Speaker 4: some of your art and going back and looking at
- 7:45Speaker 4: like part six for Jason Lives, and that's like one
- 7:47Speaker 4: of the standouts for me as far as out of
- 7:50Speaker 4: the pieces you've done. How did that initially come to be?
- 7:55Speaker 5: Well, it was maybe about two thousand, I want to
- 7:57Speaker 5: say two thousand and fourteen, I don't know, around there
- 8:01Speaker 5: twenty thirteen, twenty fourteen, where I, you know, waxwork first
- 8:06Speaker 5: began and I did their flagship release, which was the
- 8:09Speaker 5: re Animator. Richard band re Animator soundtrack, and.
- 8:14Speaker 6: So yeah, I mean I was I was working with
- 8:18Speaker 6: a couple of other labels already, and you know, Waxborg
- 8:26Speaker 6: have heard me, and they even out of nowhere and
- 8:28Speaker 6: just said, hey, we were launching with the soundtrack and
- 8:33Speaker 6: I love Reanimator, I mean you know, and so I
- 8:36Speaker 6: was like, yeah, like I would love to do that.
- 8:39Speaker 6: So yeah, we did that together, and that just kind
- 8:41Speaker 6: of started the ball rolling. And you know, they've come
- 8:44Speaker 6: to me with a lot of the Slash eighty Slasher
- 8:47Speaker 6: stuff or like some of the seventies stuff, and that's
- 8:51Speaker 6: my pocket.
- 8:52Speaker 5: You know, I'm I'm happy to to get those titles.
- 8:56Speaker 5: And I'm always happy to work with Waxwork anytime they
- 8:59Speaker 5: want to, they want to work together, I'm down, you know. Yeah. Yeah,
- 9:03Speaker 5: And are you They've got they're amazing.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Are you a collector, like a physical media collector? Do
- 9:08Speaker 3: you collect four K's blue rays all that stuff?
- 9:11Speaker 5: I do? Uh?
- 9:12Speaker 6: Yeah, yourshell like it looked like mine behind me, you know, yeah,
- 9:17Speaker 6: I definitely I've done the whole thing. You know, I'm
- 9:20Speaker 6: old enough to where it was like I was doing
- 9:22Speaker 6: the VHS when I was a teenager and in my twenties,
- 9:25Speaker 6: and then I sold all those for college money and
- 9:28Speaker 6: mostly beer money probably, And then records. I had so
- 9:32Speaker 6: many old metal records that were like classics, and at
- 9:37Speaker 6: one time I sold a lot of those when CDs
- 9:39Speaker 6: came out. And then I've done the whole media's physical
- 9:42Speaker 6: media surf, you know, Like, but there's certain movies that
- 9:47Speaker 6: like now I have a four careport K player, and
- 9:51Speaker 6: I'm read buying certain movies that you know, you have
- 9:54Speaker 6: to you have to have, like the new.
- 9:56Speaker 5: Extras on them. Presentations are different on some them. Uh
- 10:01Speaker 5: some I I believe that doesn't need a four K
- 10:04Speaker 5: probably not, but you.
- 10:06Speaker 6: Know some some deserve it. Right But you know again, yeah, no,
- 10:10Speaker 6: I am a physical records. It's always records, uh blu
- 10:15Speaker 6: rays movies, you know. I I you know, I love
- 10:18Speaker 6: what Del Toro said about you know, uh, you know
- 10:22Speaker 6: streaming could go away, so you have to be a
- 10:24Speaker 6: curator of your own you know, you know, your own
- 10:28Speaker 6: uh you know collection. You have to be a curator
- 10:30Speaker 6: in your own love of movies, right, So and I
- 10:34Speaker 6: love I love that he said that because it's true.
- 10:36Speaker 6: That's what we're doing here, like that's you know, and
- 10:38Speaker 6: we want to have. I want the artwork, I want
- 10:41Speaker 6: the special features, you know, I want to I want
- 10:44Speaker 6: to own it.
- 10:45Speaker 5: I want to make sure that I have it. And
- 10:48Speaker 5: with yes, and and toys to uh there's there's some
- 10:51Speaker 5: toys too that I've been getting back into, like eighties
- 10:53Speaker 5: toys and you know, just like like just sort of
- 10:57Speaker 5: like you know, but the odd thing here and there,
- 11:01Speaker 5: but nothing crazy.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Yeah. I just tore into the h the Ignite film's
- 11:06Speaker 3: Bride of re Animator four K. I watched, watched the
- 11:11Speaker 3: movie a couple of times. I watched a few of
- 11:12Speaker 3: the commentaries, dove into the new there's a great like
- 11:17Speaker 3: hour long new documentary on it that's that's really really good.
- 11:20Speaker 3: And uh, I was I was telling a friend of
- 11:23Speaker 3: mine recently, how much like I've come around to that
- 11:25Speaker 3: movie because I love re Animator, one of my favorites
- 11:28Speaker 3: of all time, absolutely yeah, and I've really grown to
- 11:33Speaker 3: I think with this release, love Bride almost just as much.
- 11:37Speaker 3: The only thing that drives me nuts, yeah yeah, And
- 11:42Speaker 3: the only thing that drives me nuts is that Richard
- 11:45Speaker 3: Band had to go switch to a electronic score and
- 11:49Speaker 3: it just does not have the same hit as the
- 11:52Speaker 3: orchestral score from the first movie does, and it bis
- 11:55Speaker 3: me because you can hear how much it lacks in
- 11:59Speaker 3: like that depth over the you know, or castro One.
- 12:02Speaker 3: So it's just like one of those things. I was like,
- 12:05Speaker 3: if I have to be picky about a movie, that's
- 12:06Speaker 3: what I want to be picky about, you know.
- 12:08Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, well that's cool.
- 12:10Speaker 6: I mean that's why, as as you know, film fans,
- 12:12Speaker 6: that's what we do. You know, it's like in our
- 12:14Speaker 6: blood to be you know, critical, and you know, hopefully
- 12:19Speaker 6: it's constructive, but at the same time it's you know,
- 12:22Speaker 6: we're judging based.
- 12:23Speaker 5: On what we're seeing. Man, So absolutely I'll do it,
- 12:26Speaker 5: you know. So yep.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Well, another collaboration I kind of wanted to ask you
- 12:32Speaker 4: about was like Mondo. Mondo was another that's another company
- 12:37Speaker 4: I know you've done some work with. Specifically, the one
- 12:41Speaker 4: that always stands out to me is with Halloween four.
- 12:44Speaker 4: How did you initially build that connection as opposed to Waxwork?
- 12:47Speaker 4: Was that beforehand or after You've been doing some work
- 12:51Speaker 4: with Waxwork Records.
- 12:53Speaker 5: Yeah, the Mondo connection is kind of funny because I
- 12:56Speaker 5: actually kind of have a double connection there because back
- 12:59Speaker 5: in the early days, like two thousand and nine.
- 13:02Speaker 6: When they first started, they were working out of the
- 13:04Speaker 6: Ritz Alamo draft House in Austin, in the basement, and
- 13:11Speaker 6: you know, it's just like three or four of the guys,
- 13:13Speaker 6: you know, like you know, And so they had they
- 13:17Speaker 6: were doing a screening of Street Trash. So they had
- 13:21Speaker 6: seen Realmwork magazine, which is the magazine that I used
- 13:23Speaker 6: to work for, the horror magazine out of Toronto, Canada,
- 13:26Speaker 6: and and so I was their art director, the original
- 13:29Speaker 6: art director there for a number of years. And so
- 13:32Speaker 6: they had seen my stuff and they said, Hey, do
- 13:33Speaker 6: you want to do a Street Trash poster? And I
- 13:35Speaker 6: said absolutely, But I literally had no outside time and
- 13:39Speaker 6: I cranked this thing out and I got it delivered
- 13:41Speaker 6: in time. But you know, I mean it was my
- 13:45Speaker 6: first screen print as well, so I was really like, oh,
- 13:48Speaker 6: it's got to be I gotta do the color steps
- 13:50Speaker 6: on this too. So that was like my first, like
- 13:55Speaker 6: I guess, real Mondo poster. It was an Alamo draft House,
- 13:59Speaker 6: you know, poster.
- 14:00Speaker 5: And then.
- 14:02Speaker 6: A couple of years went by and I wasn't doing
- 14:06Speaker 6: much work outside of the magazine really. I would just
- 14:09Speaker 6: take the odd thing on and so a couple of
- 14:11Speaker 6: years come by, and then they want another poster and
- 14:14Speaker 6: it was for I think it was White Zombie. The
- 14:16Speaker 6: go see White Zombie and so yeah, and I was like, okay,
- 14:20Speaker 6: you know what, I was still at the mag but
- 14:22Speaker 6: I you know, I I you know, you can't say
- 14:24Speaker 6: notice certain things. And Aero Video two was another early connection.
- 14:32Speaker 6: But anyway, with Mondo, you know, I was so blessed
- 14:35Speaker 6: to be part of that wave of like, you know, gig.
- 14:39Speaker 5: Posters for movies and oh my god, and the whole.
- 14:43Speaker 6: Silk screen thing and and and the Mondo cons We
- 14:45Speaker 6: went to every one of them.
- 14:47Speaker 5: I was invited to every one of them, and I
- 14:49Speaker 5: went to all of them. And yeah, I made some
- 14:52Speaker 5: lifelong friends there and and you know, it's it's good
- 14:55Speaker 5: to see that. You know, things have changed within the
- 14:58Speaker 5: poster bubble, and you know, but people adapt, you know,
- 15:04Speaker 5: people have adapted since you know, the old Mondo is
- 15:10Speaker 5: no more, and you know, it's uh, you know, it's
- 15:16Speaker 5: just something different now. Things.
- 15:17Speaker 6: There's there's other companies that came out of it that
- 15:21Speaker 6: all the artists that worked for the old Mondo are
- 15:22Speaker 6: working with so and and and some people are still
- 15:27Speaker 6: working with the new Mondo too, And that's great too.
- 15:30Speaker 3: So if your do you know if your street trash
- 15:33Speaker 3: poster is in the Art of Mondo book that they
- 15:35Speaker 3: put out.
- 15:36Speaker 5: Because I you know, I don't know if it made it.
- 15:38Speaker 5: That's a good question. I know that my.
- 15:42Speaker 6: I know that my Vertico, my Vertigo one did the
- 15:45Speaker 6: orange one, and then might having another one.
- 15:49Speaker 3: I'll check when we're done recording. I'll flip do it
- 15:51Speaker 3: and check, because I I just randomly flipped through that book.
- 15:54Speaker 3: It's one of the ones that that's always on the
- 15:55Speaker 3: top of the pile on our table. So yeah, and
- 15:59Speaker 3: see if that's.
- 16:01Speaker 6: You know, I'd be surprised if it was, to be honest,
- 16:03Speaker 6: because you know, it was like it was sort of
- 16:05Speaker 6: there's only seventy five eight of them, which was funny too.
- 16:08Speaker 6: But I will I will say this and it's and
- 16:10Speaker 6: it's uh and it's it's defense as as my first poster.
- 16:16Speaker 6: Jason Eisner told me one time years ago when I
- 16:20Speaker 6: met him for the first time, he said, that's been
- 16:23Speaker 6: my favorite Mondo poster for a long time because I
- 16:26Speaker 6: would go to the Ritz and see.
- 16:27Speaker 5: It on the wall.
- 16:28Speaker 6: And that's cool, that's pretty that's pretty nice to hear
- 16:32Speaker 6: something like that. So I was like, okay, right on,
- 16:34Speaker 6: right on street trash, you know, and I love street trash.
- 16:39Speaker 5: It's just I dog on it because it's my.
- 16:41Speaker 6: First poster, right, I'm always gonna look at it and
- 16:43Speaker 6: be like I you know, you're always gonna look at
- 16:46Speaker 6: your old work.
- 16:47Speaker 4: And oh, of course and judge it.
- 16:48Speaker 5: Right.
- 16:51Speaker 4: Have you ever, Chris, did you ever collect Mondo posters
- 16:54Speaker 4: at all?
- 16:55Speaker 5: No?
- 16:55Speaker 3: You know, I didn't really get into posters, uh, not
- 16:58Speaker 3: even until like we've bought a few more. But it
- 17:02Speaker 3: was one of those things where like I never really
- 17:06Speaker 3: had like the wall space to put a lot of them,
- 17:09Speaker 3: and they would just kind of get stored away. And
- 17:12Speaker 3: then the problem with that is like you run such
- 17:13Speaker 3: a risk of them getting ruined.
- 17:17Speaker 5: Now you more of a flat file, you know, drawers
- 17:20Speaker 5: and yeah.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Yeah, and now with like there's I have a couple
- 17:25Speaker 3: like theatrical posters hanging in here. We have actually right
- 17:29Speaker 3: behind the computer here, Buddy Cooper sent us Steve and
- 17:33Speaker 3: I signed original one sheets for the mutilator, so like
- 17:36Speaker 3: I'll have that stuff up. But great, great, yeah, yeah,
- 17:41Speaker 3: I know to get like one of those frames that
- 17:45Speaker 3: you can switch out the poster from the front without
- 17:47Speaker 3: taking it from the wall because in our dude, in
- 17:51Speaker 3: our apartment, there's like fifty layers of paint on these walls, you.
- 17:54Speaker 6: Know, right, Yeah, yeah, we we switch out like season
- 18:00Speaker 6: only will my wife and I will switch out posters,
- 18:02Speaker 6: you know, every everyon We'll try to, like, you know, Halloween,
- 18:06Speaker 6: we have all of our Halloween three was up this year,
- 18:08Speaker 6: you know, all the specifically Halloween three.
- 18:11Speaker 5: You know, you know that kind of thing. It's fun
- 18:14Speaker 5: and then Christmas time will throw out the odd one.
- 18:18Speaker 6: But yeah, it's uh, it's fun. Yeah, and again it's
- 18:21Speaker 6: you know, it's posters count as physical media, absolutely, right,
- 18:25Speaker 6: So I've slowed down on my I would definitely say
- 18:30Speaker 6: I've slowed down on buying posters.
- 18:33Speaker 5: Like, but.
- 18:36Speaker 4: Do you have any favorite like one sheets in your
- 18:39Speaker 4: collection or I guess hung up throughout your place?
- 18:42Speaker 5: Sure, I do? You know? The one that comes to
- 18:48Speaker 5: mind is a Maniac by Ken Taylor. M hmm.
- 18:52Speaker 6: It's uh, it's just like the stoic portrait of Oh,
- 18:59Speaker 6: come on, jes this is what happens when maniac what's
- 19:05Speaker 6: his name? Guy in Maniac?
- 19:11Speaker 3: Oh, Joe, thank.
- 19:13Speaker 7: You Spinel, let's headed this now, Joe the red one, right, Yes.
- 19:24Speaker 5: The red one.
- 19:25Speaker 6: Yeah, if you can find that one, it's it's pretty,
- 19:27Speaker 6: it's it's just so like it's just so like creepy
- 19:32Speaker 6: and cool that Yeah, and we have that one hanging up.
- 19:41Speaker 6: There's there's been a few down the line. I'm for sure,
- 19:43Speaker 6: you know, like.
- 19:46Speaker 5: I was, you know, lucky again to like, you know,
- 19:48Speaker 5: have access to to a lot. I would. I would
- 19:52Speaker 5: go to the art shows to at Austin Gallery.
- 19:54Speaker 6: They would have their own they have their own gallery
- 19:56Speaker 6: there for a long time, so they would do like
- 19:58Speaker 6: original art shows, scream prints and originals. So I was
- 20:04Speaker 6: doing some of that with them too, which is great.
- 20:06Speaker 6: I went to a couple of art shows. Jason Emmonston,
- 20:09Speaker 6: who you guys may have heard of, does a lot
- 20:11Speaker 6: of physical media stuff too. He uh, he was down
- 20:15Speaker 6: there on his art shows and we would just go
- 20:17Speaker 6: and just to support.
- 20:20Speaker 5: It was such a cool, you know thing. But yeah, anyway,
- 20:25Speaker 5: that was a long answer.
- 20:28Speaker 3: No, it's good.
- 20:28Speaker 4: Well, you know, it's all good.
- 20:30Speaker 3: This is kind of off the cuff, but I wanted
- 20:32Speaker 3: to bring this up because we were we were very
- 20:34Speaker 3: excited at the Arrow announcements for the Friday the thirteenth films,
- 20:38Speaker 3: the remake. Jason x Jason Goes to Hell. We had
- 20:40Speaker 3: Adam Marcus on the show. Oh cool, and I think
- 20:45Speaker 3: we were all sort of flooding, I feel like, yeah,
- 20:51Speaker 3: flooding the internet waiting for those posters to be turned
- 20:54Speaker 3: into a Freddi versus Jason poster and uh oh yeah,
- 20:58Speaker 3: I hope you drew one up just for on, just
- 21:00Speaker 3: to see.
- 21:00Speaker 4: You please we need it.
- 21:03Speaker 6: Yeah, well, you know, maybe I'll just do one because
- 21:05Speaker 6: you're right. I hey, if I get the call, I'm down,
- 21:09Speaker 6: you know, like I would love to push off.
- 21:12Speaker 5: Right.
- 21:12Speaker 6: It's funny how things happen in a series sometimes, Like
- 21:15Speaker 6: they had those three titles. It started with the two
- 21:18Speaker 6: thousand and nine remake, and they just say, can you
- 21:22Speaker 6: do something with the two masks, and yeah, just kind
- 21:24Speaker 6: of figured out a way to split them without just
- 21:28Speaker 6: an interesting way of splitting them with the newspaper type thing,
- 21:30Speaker 6: and then it went from there. But those were fun,
- 21:33Speaker 6: you know, I like those movies. It's been really fun
- 21:37Speaker 6: revisiting them again. Like I had seen, you know, I'd
- 21:42Speaker 6: seen them numerous times over the years, but like it
- 21:44Speaker 6: had been a minute for.
- 21:46Speaker 5: Jason Goes to Hell, and it had been a long
- 21:50Speaker 5: time for the remake Jason X. I've probably seen more
- 21:54Speaker 5: than a couple of times in there.
- 21:56Speaker 6: But it was cool to see that all three of
- 21:59Speaker 6: those got the you know, this massive love for Marrow.
- 22:02Speaker 6: I mean, you know, they really gave it the royal treatment,
- 22:05Speaker 6: and you know it's I think they're those sequels are worthy.
- 22:09Speaker 5: Of it, you know, I don't know, it's fun to
- 22:10Speaker 5: see them again. And yeah, it was again.
- 22:14Speaker 6: It was amazing to be able to contribute to to
- 22:17Speaker 6: those films, you know that way?
- 22:19Speaker 4: Did you did you have a favorite out of those
- 22:22Speaker 4: three pieces that you did.
- 22:26Speaker 6: I think the two thousand and nine remake one is
- 22:28Speaker 6: my favorite out of the three, and then I don't know.
- 22:30Speaker 6: I like the Jason X one is pretty cool too.
- 22:32Speaker 5: I like the the one in the so when you
- 22:36Speaker 5: open the book, inside is a foreigners report of like
- 22:40Speaker 5: the part nine one of Jason Hell And uh, I'm
- 22:45Speaker 5: just making this stuff up, like I'm I'm watching them
- 22:47Speaker 5: taking it from the movie, but I'm.
- 22:49Speaker 6: Just making all this stuff up, right, and I'm just
- 22:52Speaker 6: kind of having fun, and and I'm presenting it to Arrow,
- 22:55Speaker 6: and I'm sure they're present. Well, I know they presented
- 22:57Speaker 6: it to Adam because Adam came up to me Texas
- 23:00Speaker 6: Fright Mare was it last year? Then maybe the year
- 23:03Speaker 6: before last year when we first came out, because they
- 23:06Speaker 6: had him signing him down his copies down at their
- 23:09Speaker 6: booth and so Arrow was there. They were the sponsor
- 23:13Speaker 6: for the show, and so Arrow brings over Adam and
- 23:18Speaker 6: you know, I get to meet at him and he's like, dude.
- 23:19Speaker 5: I love He's like, I love this. I love that.
- 23:22Speaker 5: I was like, dude, thank you so much.
- 23:23Speaker 7: Man.
- 23:24Speaker 5: It's this pleasure meeting and all this stuff, you know,
- 23:25Speaker 5: thank you. I had so much fun.
- 23:27Speaker 6: And I was like, you know, all that stuff in
- 23:30Speaker 6: the Corners report, it's all it's all bs right, and.
- 23:32Speaker 5: He's just like, I know, but I love it. I
- 23:35Speaker 5: totally get it. I totally get it. I'm like, right
- 23:38Speaker 5: on man, right on it, because I'm just like, you know,
- 23:41Speaker 5: just having my own fun with it, you know. And
- 23:43Speaker 5: then you know, sometimes you feel like when you are
- 23:45Speaker 5: doing posters, you feel like, okay, you are trying to
- 23:49Speaker 5: build the world, right, like you're trying to build on
- 23:51Speaker 5: their world a little bit, and then sometimes you're just
- 23:54Speaker 5: trying to have a little fun with it too and
- 23:55Speaker 5: see what you can get away with. I just love
- 23:58Speaker 5: doing that.
- 23:58Speaker 6: Stuff like just coming up with like these infographic type
- 24:01Speaker 6: stuff that I've done for some other things too, where
- 24:05Speaker 6: it's like kind of break things down in a sort
- 24:08Speaker 6: of a fun fan way, like what makes this movie?
- 24:13Speaker 6: What what little nuggets in this movie? Can I highlight
- 24:17Speaker 6: in these you know, peripheral illustrations that need to be done?
- 24:22Speaker 3: Oh? Absolutely?
- 24:24Speaker 6: Lets and stuff like that, and records and you know,
- 24:26Speaker 6: I love doing the center labels and you know what
- 24:28Speaker 6: can I do for a center label for you know,
- 24:31Speaker 6: whatever whatever.
- 24:33Speaker 3: My my favorite of the three, just because of the
- 24:36Speaker 3: colors was Jason Goes to Hell. I love the orange
- 24:40Speaker 3: in that, but also that's a movie that I just
- 24:45Speaker 3: have always loved. It's been one of my favorite. In
- 24:48Speaker 3: the right that they're enfranchised, that's yeah, I mean it
- 24:53Speaker 3: in four K is like it was. It feels unreal
- 24:56Speaker 3: because I remember having to hunt down an unrated D
- 25:00Speaker 3: to watch the fool ten you know kill sequence.
- 25:05Speaker 6: Right and right things we had to do back then
- 25:07Speaker 6: to like oh my god, uncut scene.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, and then now now being able to own
- 25:14Speaker 3: on disc like a remastered sharper than ever, better colors
- 25:19Speaker 3: than ever, with that full and it's it's kind of unreal.
- 25:23Speaker 3: You like, I don't get I don't get nostalgic for it.
- 25:26Speaker 3: I'm just sort of in like a disbelief like how
- 25:29Speaker 3: did this go from?
- 25:32Speaker 5: Right?
- 25:32Speaker 3: This?
- 25:32Speaker 5: This so cool? Right? It seems like yeah, like now
- 25:35Speaker 5: I'm now sorry what was that? Oh?
- 25:38Speaker 4: I was just gonna say, there was so much love
- 25:40Speaker 4: put into each one of these releaks.
- 25:41Speaker 3: It's crazy.
- 25:42Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, you're absolutely right, and it is.
- 25:45Speaker 6: It is a trip because now it's like, well, I'm
- 25:47Speaker 6: holding onto like the uncut version of this movie.
- 25:49Speaker 5: I never thought i'd see that. I never thought that
- 25:51Speaker 5: this would get released. I remember.
- 25:55Speaker 6: In Ontario we had our own little video Nasty Era
- 25:59Speaker 6: in the area eighty. You know, our censorship boards here
- 26:02Speaker 6: were going crazy and they were, you know, censoring all
- 26:06Speaker 6: kinds of you know. I remember Freddy's Nightmares was heavily
- 26:09Speaker 6: censored on TV and that was upsetting. When I was
- 26:13Speaker 6: like sixteen, you know, you know, all the Friday movies
- 26:18Speaker 6: were getting censored. The very first time I watched Day
- 26:21Speaker 6: of the Dead was a rental copy probably from well
- 26:24Speaker 6: it was from Jumbo Video. Probably wore a blockbuster, but
- 26:30Speaker 6: it was heavily censored, like it was like half a
- 26:33Speaker 6: gunshot would go off and maybe on to the next scene.
- 26:35Speaker 6: You wouldn't see the whip, you wouldn't see the zombie
- 26:38Speaker 6: fall off the ladder, you wouldn't see the shovel push
- 26:41Speaker 6: off and the head half the head push off with it.
- 26:44Speaker 6: You wouldn't see him, you know, just maybe him getting up,
- 26:47Speaker 6: but you wouldn't see the full spill of the zombie.
- 26:51Speaker 6: All that stuff was gone, and it was like, whoa
- 26:53Speaker 6: what happened here? Like and I remember Zombie the full
- 26:57Speaker 6: t movie was censored. Oh, dead alive that whole lot.
- 27:00Speaker 6: I'm overseeen totally.
- 27:02Speaker 3: How do you end about how do you do the
- 27:03Speaker 3: third act of that movie without that?
- 27:06Speaker 7: Right?
- 27:07Speaker 5: I mean I think I think I think maybe they
- 27:10Speaker 5: do show like, you know, him using it a bit,
- 27:12Speaker 5: but like it's yeah, you.
- 27:14Speaker 6: Know what, that's like a what a six minute scene
- 27:17Speaker 6: or something like that. It's like turned down in like
- 27:19Speaker 6: four seconds maybe a minute anyway, So it was like, yeah,
- 27:24Speaker 6: so everything was like, oh TCM two Texas chancel too
- 27:27Speaker 6: completely censored. Oh I remember seeing pictures in the magazine
- 27:32Speaker 6: is going, uh, like I shot here, but I saw
- 27:37Speaker 6: this effect scene, but I'm not seeing it in the movie,
- 27:40Speaker 6: And that was frustrating. And then it wasn't until like
- 27:43Speaker 6: Anchor Bay and like the early the late nineties, nineties,
- 27:46Speaker 6: maybe ninety nine, two thousands, Anchor Bay came around and
- 27:50Speaker 6: started to release those clamshell cases of movies DVDs and
- 27:57Speaker 6: and they were releasing that stuff on cut, And that
- 27:59Speaker 6: was the first time, like maybe in like the early
- 28:03Speaker 6: you know, I don't know whatever, early two thousands when
- 28:06Speaker 6: I finally got to see Day of the Dead uncut,
- 28:09Speaker 6: I finally got to see Texas chanceaw uncut, because yeah,
- 28:14Speaker 6: they're different movies.
- 28:15Speaker 3: When oh, yeah, yeah, I was gonna ask what's it
- 28:19Speaker 3: like to watch I mean, if you can remember, what's
- 28:21Speaker 3: it like watching The Day of the Dead for the
- 28:22Speaker 3: first time uncut and realizing that you missed literally every
- 28:29Speaker 3: Tom Savini's masterpiece. You've missed everything.
- 28:32Speaker 6: It was heavily, heavily censored. So yeah, no, it was
- 28:35Speaker 6: a different experience. I remember being just like, well, it's done,
- 28:38Speaker 6: and the Dead is still my favorite. I just remember
- 28:40Speaker 6: thinking that. But when you watch Day of the Dead
- 28:43Speaker 6: again and all those scenes are put back in, and
- 28:46Speaker 6: you know, it's like and and and you're seeing everything
- 28:48Speaker 6: you're meant to see.
- 28:50Speaker 5: It's a kick ass sequel.
- 28:51Speaker 6: Too, Like there was a time where I'm thinking Day,
- 28:53Speaker 6: Like you know what I mean, Like there was a
- 28:55Speaker 6: time where Day was all of a sudden my favorite
- 28:57Speaker 6: you know, so you know, but yeah, I mean it's
- 29:02Speaker 6: just supposed to show that, like you can take out Gore. Yeah,
- 29:06Speaker 6: and I get it it. It can be gratuitous, but
- 29:08Speaker 6: it can also move the story too. And if you
- 29:11Speaker 6: cut everything out, well then it's really gonna, you know,
- 29:15Speaker 6: really gonna effect your movie big time.
- 29:19Speaker 3: I think that's what's crazy, because this is going live
- 29:21Speaker 3: on a Monday. If you're listening to this on Day
- 29:24Speaker 3: one tomorrow, Grindhouse Releasing is putting up their pre order
- 29:28Speaker 3: for Cannibal Holocaust on four K I one of my
- 29:34Speaker 3: favorite movies of all time.
- 29:36Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, right on, Yeah, it's it's it's it's got
- 29:39Speaker 5: it's got teeth for sure, Dude.
- 29:41Speaker 3: I had no idea there was like a never before
- 29:43Speaker 3: seen cut of this movie. Like this is the first
- 29:46Speaker 3: time ever this cut is coming out.
- 29:48Speaker 5: It's like, oh really, I didn't know that either.
- 29:50Speaker 3: Yeah. Still in twenty twenty six, we're discovering footage from
- 29:54Speaker 3: a movies that what I thought have already been put out,
- 29:58Speaker 3: And I believe it's like six or seven minutes of
- 30:00Speaker 3: extra footage. But you know, Bob Morowsky and his team
- 30:04Speaker 3: Movie Grindhouse found it and they're gonna be putting it out,
- 30:07Speaker 3: and that's it's incredible that that that's the current climate
- 30:11Speaker 3: we live in for the genre and for physical media,
- 30:13Speaker 3: that that's happening.
- 30:15Speaker 6: No, that's I mean, you know, if they keep finding stuff,
- 30:19Speaker 6: you know, horror fans are gonna want to see everything.
- 30:21Speaker 6: If it's one of your favorite movies, we're gonna want
- 30:23Speaker 6: to see every everything that you know is you know
- 30:27Speaker 6: behind it, right, So that's awesome.
- 30:29Speaker 3: When animal stuff out. Keep the animal.
- 30:34Speaker 5: Correct, but you know, you gotta.
- 30:35Speaker 6: I've always I've always had a lot of respect for
- 30:38Speaker 6: Cannibal Holocaust because it's a movie that you know it uh,
- 30:43Speaker 6: it shook the foundations, right, and I think films are
- 30:46Speaker 6: supposed to do that, you know, they're they are supposed
- 30:48Speaker 6: to do that in yeah ways, they are supposed to
- 30:51Speaker 6: be taboo, you know. I felt I feel that way
- 30:54Speaker 6: about the original Texas Chainsaw. I feel you know, yeah,
- 30:58Speaker 6: there's certain you know, monarch, you know, movies like you know,
- 31:05Speaker 6: and Cannibal Holocaust. You know, you got to give it respect.
- 31:08Speaker 6: You know, because of what they did, what they accomplished,
- 31:12Speaker 6: the you know, the environment they were in and everything. Right, Yeah, yeah,
- 31:19Speaker 6: Tuesday kind of it's it's filmmak. It's it's you know,
- 31:24Speaker 6: it's filmmaking, gorilla filmmaking.
- 31:26Speaker 5: Right.
- 31:28Speaker 3: Yeah, Well Tuesday shaping out to be like a monumental
- 31:31Speaker 3: day in my life. We have that pre order going up,
- 31:34Speaker 3: and then I'm seeing Texas Chainsaw Masker in theaters for yeah.
- 31:39Speaker 5: I would like to see that.
- 31:40Speaker 6: I mean, I also am really interested in that animated
- 31:45Speaker 6: version that the guy from Skinner Darkly is.
- 31:49Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's really cool.
- 31:51Speaker 6: Actually, I'm it's it's I think it's pretty much a
- 31:54Speaker 6: frame by frame, you know, interpretation. But I love animation,
- 32:00Speaker 6: old school animation, and they are saying it's hand drawn,
- 32:03Speaker 6: and that's nice to see these days too, right, So
- 32:07Speaker 6: I definitely they you know, Texas Chansaw just keeps speaking.
- 32:12Speaker 6: That movie just keeps like going number one of course,
- 32:15Speaker 6: but like just the way they've handled their anniversaries and
- 32:21Speaker 6: the way they've handled the licensing, it just keeps my
- 32:24Speaker 6: interest peaked all the time, Like I'm always looking forward
- 32:28Speaker 6: to like what have they got coming out?
- 32:29Speaker 5: Now? It's this animated movie just sounds awesome.
- 32:34Speaker 3: So, yeah, did you see the Night of the Animated Dead?
- 32:37Speaker 3: They came out a couple of years ago, the animation
- 32:39Speaker 3: of Night Living Dead.
- 32:41Speaker 5: I gotta be honest, I think I saw a little
- 32:42Speaker 5: bit of it, but I don't know if I stuck
- 32:45Speaker 5: with it.
- 32:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't. I never watched it. I just like
- 32:47Speaker 3: you mentioned animation, so I figured you probably checked it
- 32:50Speaker 3: out at that point.
- 32:50Speaker 5: You know. Yeah, yeah, maybe I didn't. I don't know.
- 32:53Speaker 5: I don't remember watching the whole thing, but uh, I.
- 32:57Speaker 3: Did have I remember, I remember like picking it up.
- 33:00Speaker 3: I was in a store and saw the blu ray
- 33:02Speaker 3: of it, and I was like, this looks like a
- 33:04Speaker 3: like a nineties Nickelodeon version of it more than like
- 33:07Speaker 3: a hand you know.
- 33:09Speaker 6: I think the way it was presented in this style
- 33:12Speaker 6: of animation, my mind just blossed over it.
- 33:14Speaker 5: I don't know, like I don't know, I don't know.
- 33:18Speaker 5: I don't want to knock anything, but you know, it is,
- 33:20Speaker 5: it is.
- 33:21Speaker 6: It is cool to see, like, you know, animated movies
- 33:24Speaker 6: come out, like you know, these these ips that we love,
- 33:27Speaker 6: you know, like you know, sometimes you know, there's these
- 33:32Speaker 6: these satellite things that come out that are just.
- 33:33Speaker 5: Really cool, and that's one of them.
- 33:35Speaker 6: Like, you know, uh, it's such an iconic movie, it
- 33:39Speaker 6: makes sense to draw it. Yeah, it makes sense to
- 33:43Speaker 6: turn it into a drawing if I just could put
- 33:47Speaker 6: it so simply, like, you know, so I can't wait
- 33:50Speaker 6: to see to see that, Garry.
- 33:53Speaker 4: I was gonna ask because you're you're from Ontario, correct,
- 33:56Speaker 4: mm hmm okay. So like growing up, like when you
- 34:00Speaker 4: were getting into horror, was David Cronenberg pretty prominent, like
- 34:04Speaker 4: as far as the films at the time you were
- 34:07Speaker 4: really getting into horror.
- 34:08Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely.
- 34:10Speaker 6: The Fly okay, at if I'm gonna if I'm gonna
- 34:16Speaker 6: think like in Scanners was another one I saw when
- 34:19Speaker 6: I was young. And you know, when I was like,
- 34:23Speaker 6: you know, twelve or thirteen, I mean I was buying
- 34:26Speaker 6: all the monster magazines and I was buying Mad Magazine.
- 34:29Speaker 6: I was buying you know, Fango Deep Red. I was
- 34:34Speaker 6: really trying to learn everything I could about horror movies.
- 34:37Speaker 6: And then you know, we couldn't get a lot of
- 34:40Speaker 6: the European stuff, but that's what I wanted to see.
- 34:42Speaker 6: I was sort of like, okay, I loved I love
- 34:45Speaker 6: like I guess the Freddie and Jason, and I loved
- 34:48Speaker 6: all the Universal monsters, and I loved American horror films.
- 34:51Speaker 6: But when I was like, I guess, am I late
- 34:54Speaker 6: maybe mid teens and really trying to figure out, well,
- 34:57Speaker 6: who's Luccio Pucci, Who's Dario or Jen to like what
- 35:00Speaker 6: are they doing over there? And like, you know, they're
- 35:02Speaker 6: doing some pretty crazy stuff, amazing stuff over there. And
- 35:05Speaker 6: I was pretty young watching Zombie. I remember being very
- 35:09Speaker 6: young watching Zombie and and House by the Cemetery and
- 35:13Speaker 6: and getting on that wave and Chess ballin who was
- 35:16Speaker 6: a journalist for you know, I guess gore Zone was
- 35:20Speaker 6: another magazine that I absolutely loved, So I was always
- 35:23Speaker 6: reading that and he had a piece in that you
- 35:25Speaker 6: had to call him in that, so I was always
- 35:28Speaker 6: following what he.
- 35:29Speaker 5: Was doing and talking about and highlighting.
- 35:34Speaker 6: Even I didn't agree with everything, but you know, that's
- 35:36Speaker 6: that's what it's about, right.
- 35:38Speaker 5: But for the most part though, he was sort of
- 35:41Speaker 5: like the Hunter S. Thompson of you know, a horror
- 35:45Speaker 5: back then, and I just loved his reviews. So I
- 35:47Speaker 5: was kind of getting my education there and and just
- 35:51Speaker 5: you know, worked in a video store and but they
- 35:55Speaker 5: didn't have titles that you know, It wasn't until I
- 35:58Speaker 5: moved to Toronto where I could really find like Ring
- 36:02Speaker 5: Goo or or like you know, really like European stuff,
- 36:10Speaker 5: you know, like hard to find stuff until I went there.
- 36:13Speaker 4: And anyway, were you able to get a little bit
- 36:17Speaker 4: more into the Italian horror like at that point then,
- 36:19Speaker 4: or to tap into some of those movies?
- 36:21Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I mean once once I found a video
- 36:24Speaker 5: store where like they had all the all the Baba's,
- 36:26Speaker 5: all the fool Cheese, all the Gento's. Yeah. I would
- 36:29Speaker 5: just go through the catalog, you know, and yeah, and.
- 36:34Speaker 6: There's standouts, right, I mean, you know, like The Beyond
- 36:37Speaker 6: is always a big one for me, is always a
- 36:39Speaker 6: big movie for me.
- 36:40Speaker 5: I've always loved it.
- 36:40Speaker 6: I saw it, like you know, screening years and years
- 36:44Speaker 6: ago in Toronto, and it just you know, cemented myself
- 36:50Speaker 6: as a horror fan, you know.
- 36:52Speaker 5: And yeah, like when you see some of these movies
- 36:57Speaker 5: in the.
- 36:57Speaker 6: Theater with like like minded people, you know, know, you
- 37:01Speaker 6: know you'll never forget some of those nights. You know
- 37:03Speaker 6: that there's some of these movies become life changers because
- 37:07Speaker 6: you know, you you start to follow that movie or
- 37:11Speaker 6: the people, the fans of that movie or the people
- 37:12Speaker 6: that actually make that movie you might meet at these conventions. Yeah,
- 37:18Speaker 6: and uh, and then you know, and if you're like,
- 37:21Speaker 6: if you're a writer, you could be writing for that movie,
- 37:23Speaker 6: where you could be drawing for that movie.
- 37:25Speaker 5: You know, like I keep yeah, stick with stuff, be passionate.
- 37:30Speaker 3: I think that's like it's I always I always fall
- 37:34Speaker 3: into like a weird pocket where I want to really
- 37:37Speaker 3: be like I I obviously always want to be expressive
- 37:40Speaker 3: about something that I love that I feel like not
- 37:42Speaker 3: a lot of people do. Like I went through a
- 37:44Speaker 3: whole run where I got into like genre lo on,
- 37:46Speaker 3: like fascination and recue for a Vampire and all this stuff.
- 37:50Speaker 3: And I remember going to, uh, there's a convention right
- 37:54Speaker 3: near me, Monster Media and the best. Yeah. Yeah, it
- 37:59Speaker 3: just actually today was the last day of it for
- 38:01Speaker 3: this this month. Paul Bear Press was there setting up
- 38:05Speaker 3: and they were selling shirts.
- 38:07Speaker 5: Yeah they're great.
- 38:10Speaker 3: Yeah, they're incredible, man. And I always end up spending
- 38:14Speaker 3: like one hundred dollars with them and I thought a
- 38:17Speaker 3: fascination T shirt from them, and they're like, dude, we
- 38:20Speaker 3: brought this shirt here every year for the last like
- 38:22Speaker 3: five years, and nobody's ever asked for it. They're like,
- 38:25Speaker 3: it's awesome to hear somebody and yeah, I went on
- 38:29Speaker 3: for an hour about genre lo on and you know,
- 38:32Speaker 3: like and it was it was so cool, and it
- 38:35Speaker 3: made me want to come home and use my platform
- 38:39Speaker 3: to talk about it more to hopefully inspire some other
- 38:42Speaker 3: people to check it out and get it.
- 38:44Speaker 5: Yeah. Absolutely, And yeah he did Grapes of Death too, right,
- 38:48Speaker 5: did he not?
- 38:49Speaker 3: Yeah, yep, Grapes of Death.
- 38:50Speaker 5: Yeah, that's one of my favorites by him.
- 38:53Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 38:54Speaker 5: Yeah, a bunch of stuff.
- 38:56Speaker 6: Yeah, the conventions are the best, like, you know, for
- 38:59Speaker 6: that you're gonna find those obscure items or you're gonna
- 39:05Speaker 6: find people that are into that, you know, like.
- 39:07Speaker 5: Like minded individuals.
- 39:08Speaker 6: I love that movie too, and you know, it's it's
- 39:11Speaker 6: it's a lot of fun to.
- 39:13Speaker 5: To meet other people and you know, to to keep
- 39:15Speaker 5: doing this stuff. It's just been amazing.
- 39:17Speaker 3: Yeah, It's it's funny because I always, like, I get it.
- 39:21Speaker 3: As a vendor, you want to put your most popular,
- 39:23Speaker 3: like mainstream stuff to the front, because that's what most
- 39:25Speaker 3: people are gonna grab and buy. But I've kind of
- 39:28Speaker 3: made it like my mission too. When I go to booths.
- 39:30Speaker 3: I try to find the one thing that like nobody
- 39:32Speaker 3: else will point out for the day, like oh yeah,
- 39:35Speaker 3: Like it'll be like a painter and I'll try to
- 39:38Speaker 3: find the most obscure piece. And every single time, usually
- 39:42Speaker 3: at least once or twice at a convention, somebody will
- 39:45Speaker 3: tell my wife or I like, you know, nobody's ever
- 39:47Speaker 3: pointed that out, like nobody's ever interested in that. We
- 39:50Speaker 3: try to do that, you know what I mean.
- 39:52Speaker 6: And you just made that, you made their day. You know,
- 39:54Speaker 6: that's that's that's what it is right there.
- 39:57Speaker 5: You know.
- 39:58Speaker 6: I mean I've got prints in my my book where
- 40:00Speaker 6: it's like, am I gonna spell you know, a mausoleum
- 40:04Speaker 6: print at this show? I think I will, or there
- 40:07Speaker 6: might be a show where I don't think I will sell,
- 40:10Speaker 6: you know.
- 40:10Speaker 5: A Spooky's print at this show. You know that kind
- 40:13Speaker 5: of thing, right.
- 40:14Speaker 3: I'll buy a mausoleum print. Yeah that's good.
- 40:20Speaker 6: But you know it's one of those things where you know,
- 40:25Speaker 6: all that obscure stuff, like you know, I have a
- 40:29Speaker 6: range of stuff I love, so like you know, when
- 40:32Speaker 6: I'm at a con like I'll love like the vinegar
- 40:34Speaker 6: syndrome stuff that's like, you know, the bottom of the barrel,
- 40:39Speaker 6: like no budget stuff to like the big budget stuff,
- 40:44Speaker 6: you know. But I think as a horror fan, I
- 40:47Speaker 6: definitely lean more towards eighties seventies stuff, and totally that's
- 40:53Speaker 6: the stuff that I kind of focus on more or less.
- 40:55Speaker 3: Well, you talked about The Fly a little bit ago,
- 40:58Speaker 3: and my wife and I just watch that for two nights,
- 41:02Speaker 3: dude it And I was telling my wife first of all,
- 41:04Speaker 3: that Howard Shore score is, Oh yeah, that. I think.
- 41:10Speaker 3: What I admire most about Kroniberg is the guy wastes
- 41:14Speaker 3: no time. That movie starts and ends with zero. It
- 41:20Speaker 3: just goes. And you have to admire a director who
- 41:23Speaker 3: doesn't need to set anything up, just start here we
- 41:28Speaker 3: are and then just end on the lowest point of
- 41:31Speaker 3: the movie.
- 41:32Speaker 5: And it's such a drag the ending, but it's such
- 41:35Speaker 5: a powerful ending. I mean, it's it's with you, so
- 41:39Speaker 5: you know.
- 41:39Speaker 6: Like you really like that ending just lingers, Yeah, you know,
- 41:42Speaker 6: it's it's you know, you feel so so so sorry
- 41:46Speaker 6: for him, you know, but it's a crushing, crushing ending,
- 41:51Speaker 6: you know. But uh, it's an excellent movie. It's it's
- 41:53Speaker 6: one of Cronerberg's best. And I remember like just being
- 41:56Speaker 6: a young horror fan and and you know that movie
- 42:00Speaker 6: was everywhere when it was, you know, being released back then,
- 42:04Speaker 6: and just seeing all the articles on it and just like, wow,
- 42:07Speaker 6: I can't wait to see this thing.
- 42:08Speaker 5: And it lived up.
- 42:09Speaker 6: Like it's a movie that lives up to the hype,
- 42:12Speaker 6: you know, like it lives up all I've always heard
- 42:14Speaker 6: about this movie. If you haven't seen The Fly, you know,
- 42:17Speaker 6: it's such a treat to it would be it would
- 42:19Speaker 6: be such a treat to watch for the first time.
- 42:21Speaker 3: Oh my god, Yeah, Steve, have you ever seen the
- 42:23Speaker 3: original of The Fly?
- 42:25Speaker 4: It's been a long time.
- 42:26Speaker 6: I was just gonna say, yeah, the original excellent. I mean,
- 42:30Speaker 6: it's great on its own, it is, right, I mean
- 42:34Speaker 6: it's dry. I want to say that, but it's like,
- 42:36Speaker 6: you know, it's it's uh, it's a fifties you know, uh,
- 42:40Speaker 6: can't be movie, but it's I always I love the original.
- 42:44Speaker 5: I love all three of them really well.
- 42:46Speaker 3: Yeah, Revenge of the Fly is my favorite of the three.
- 42:49Speaker 3: I think Curse got a little do you know, but yeah, Revenge.
- 42:53Speaker 5: Yeah, and it's you know, it's such an oddball sequel,
- 42:58Speaker 5: but I love it.
- 43:00Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 43:00Speaker 5: And that's also I think I don't know about the
- 43:02Speaker 5: third one.
- 43:03Speaker 6: I think it is, but I know the first two
- 43:05Speaker 6: are shot in Montreal, Canada, which makes.
- 43:08Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, they steve. The thing that's so cool about
- 43:11Speaker 3: the original Fly is that they I saw Cronenbergs first,
- 43:15Speaker 3: so when you go back, obviously you know it's not
- 43:16Speaker 3: going to be the same. But yeah, of course it
- 43:19Speaker 3: was really cool how effective it was by showing so little,
- 43:22Speaker 3: because most of the time he had something covering, like
- 43:26Speaker 3: his head and stuff, so you only see like the
- 43:28Speaker 3: arm and stuff. But then you get to that final
- 43:31Speaker 3: like three minutes of the movie when it's revealed you know,
- 43:34Speaker 3: the web and stuck into it, and it is like
- 43:37Speaker 3: such a shocker of an ending, and it's it's it's
- 43:40Speaker 3: another one that ends on a bit of a downer,
- 43:42Speaker 3: you know, yeah.
- 43:43Speaker 5: Oh absolutely yeah, and it's it's yeah, it's a shocking
- 43:45Speaker 5: ending for like the fifties.
- 43:47Speaker 6: Would be you know, it would be so cool to
- 43:49Speaker 6: see that. But yeah, again, like, yeah, cronemberg I've always
- 43:53Speaker 6: loved his movies. I'm just trying to think of some
- 43:57Speaker 6: of the other eighties, like you know, stuff Stupart Gordon.
- 44:01Speaker 6: We kind of touched on him, but he was always
- 44:02Speaker 6: a big director for me. John Carpenter. Yeah yeah, Christine.
- 44:08Speaker 5: Is one of my favorite movies by him.
- 44:10Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, oh my god, somebody's finally on my way here.
- 44:14Speaker 4: We've got.
- 44:16Speaker 6: It's so badass. I I love that movie. Yeah, you know,
- 44:21Speaker 6: I mean, I you know, I love the Thing, of course,
- 44:24Speaker 6: Like the Thing is, like, you know, arguably arguably his
- 44:28Speaker 6: best you know, I mean, Halloween is arguably his best.
- 44:32Speaker 6: I mean, he's got a lot of bangers, you know, so,
- 44:35Speaker 6: but yeah.
- 44:38Speaker 5: Carpenter's consistent. You know, there's a pocket consistency there.
- 44:44Speaker 6: There's enough there, right, Like he's got an amazing career
- 44:50Speaker 6: there where you could just revisit his films forever.
- 44:56Speaker 4: And I was gonna say, because you more recently did
- 45:01Speaker 4: the piece for in the Mouth of Madness, right for
- 45:04Speaker 4: Terror Vision. Yeah, yeah, oh so good.
- 45:08Speaker 6: Oh thanks, yeah again like getting to do like I
- 45:11Speaker 6: love doing soundtracks, like I love love doing the artwork
- 45:15Speaker 6: for movies and for scores rather and and so yeah,
- 45:22Speaker 6: when they came to me with that, I was like,
- 45:24Speaker 6: you know, it was amazing. I was like, yeah, of course,
- 45:27Speaker 6: I can't. I can't say no to that one. I
- 45:29Speaker 6: watched the movie again. I said, yeah, this is again
- 45:31Speaker 6: like a movie I hadn't seen a little bit, and
- 45:34Speaker 6: you know, reading up on the score, it had me
- 45:37Speaker 6: really you know interested. Again, it was like I didn't know,
- 45:40Speaker 6: or at least i'd forgotten or I didn't know that
- 45:42Speaker 6: he was inspired by Metallica's Enter Sandman for that. So
- 45:49Speaker 6: that movie came out around that time, and so if
- 45:53Speaker 6: you listen to the soundtrack, it's kind of a heavier
- 45:55Speaker 6: Carpenter score. So he was iro Metallica, which I thought
- 45:59Speaker 6: was cool. And and yeah, again you get to do
- 46:03Speaker 6: some fun stuff with like the just when you work
- 46:06Speaker 6: with packaging, you get to do you know, there's a
- 46:08Speaker 6: lot of artwork that needs to be done, the gatefolds
- 46:12Speaker 6: and the back covers and the labels, and I just
- 46:15Speaker 6: love doing it all and and trying to kind of
- 46:17Speaker 6: tie in again nuggets of stuff from the movies, little
- 46:23Speaker 6: fan favorite things. What can I sneak in here that's
- 46:27Speaker 6: going to be something unique and new to the movie
- 46:30Speaker 6: and that fans of the movie are gonna go, oh,
- 46:32Speaker 6: that's a cool take.
- 46:34Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, I'm sure that one feels special as well,
- 46:37Speaker 3: especially with the recent passing of Sam Neil.
- 46:41Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, And it's it's so sad to see
- 46:45Speaker 6: so many people you know, from our generation of filmmakers,
- 46:51Speaker 6: you know, leaving us right and actors and directors, and
- 46:56Speaker 6: it's it's, you know, time is just going on and
- 47:02Speaker 6: we're just gonna I don't know. To me, it's like, uh,
- 47:04Speaker 6: they're gonna live forever in in pop culture, they're gonna
- 47:08Speaker 6: live forever.
- 47:09Speaker 5: And you know, these these horror movies are gonna live
- 47:11Speaker 5: on their history.
- 47:13Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, so we can always appreciate the people
- 47:17Speaker 6: that we're in them and and you know, in the
- 47:19Speaker 6: in the in the movies themselves, the art themselves, we
- 47:22Speaker 6: can always appreciate you.
- 47:23Speaker 4: So, yeah, well I was I was gonna ask speaking
- 47:27Speaker 4: of like creating artwork for a film. Uh, like, when
- 47:31Speaker 4: you you like have a commission, what's the first thing
- 47:33Speaker 4: you typically do. Do you go back and rewatch the
- 47:35Speaker 4: movie or do some sort of research or do reference
- 47:40Speaker 4: any like specific artwork for inspiration.
- 47:43Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, I'll definitely watch a movie again if
- 47:47Speaker 6: it's one that maybe I need to revisit, because yeah,
- 47:51Speaker 6: when you're doing a poster or a soundtrack design for
- 47:55Speaker 6: for something, you know, you're listening with you know, New
- 47:59Speaker 6: Year's watching with new eyes and you're watching it differently
- 48:02Speaker 6: because now I have to interpret this thing with a
- 48:07Speaker 6: piece of artwork. So I love doing that lovery visiting things.
- 48:13Speaker 6: And yeah, I'll do that. And I'll just do some
- 48:14Speaker 6: quick thumbnails and you know, I'll just sort of like
- 48:19Speaker 6: get some concepts together, get some ideas down, and you know,
- 48:24Speaker 6: I'll present anywhere between three to six ideas totally different,
- 48:30Speaker 6: you know, totally different sketches pretty quick black and white.
- 48:35Speaker 6: I don't want to spend too much time at this
- 48:36Speaker 6: stage because you know, it's napkin sketches basically, but they're
- 48:41Speaker 6: a little better than that, you know, but enough to
- 48:45Speaker 6: show that this is what I'm thinking, this is what
- 48:47Speaker 6: I'm thinking, and and yeah, oftentimes i'll reference other Okay,
- 48:52Speaker 6: maybe I want like a Basio go Gos type lighting here,
- 48:54Speaker 6: you know, like a famous monster's lighting, or like I
- 48:57Speaker 6: don't know, or like Stuart Gordon I remember working on Reanimator, going,
- 49:02Speaker 6: this thing is just going to be green, Reanimator green all.
- 49:05Speaker 4: The way, like you know, it seems appropriate, you know.
- 49:11Speaker 6: And you just to me, it's like I'll pick a
- 49:13Speaker 6: color from the movie. If there's a predominant color from
- 49:15Speaker 6: a movie, I'll pick that and go with it. Or
- 49:19Speaker 6: if there's like old marketing material, I'll look at like
- 49:22Speaker 6: say like I love.
- 49:24Speaker 5: I love love love. H. G.
- 49:27Speaker 6: Lewis is herschel Gordon Lewis's marketing from back in the day,
- 49:30Speaker 6: like and Wizard of Gore and all that stuff. It's black,
- 49:36Speaker 6: all of it's black and white and red. It's all
- 49:39Speaker 6: very simple, stark, but you know, just just you know, screams, exploitation,
- 49:46Speaker 6: you know it streams, you know taboo, you know it's
- 49:53Speaker 6: it's it's just it isn't doing exactly what it needs
- 49:55Speaker 6: to do. It's reeling you in and saying you need
- 49:58Speaker 6: to come and watch this if you dare right, that
- 50:01Speaker 6: type of stuff, And I love I love that kind
- 50:04Speaker 6: of stuff, and so I kind of work kind of
- 50:08Speaker 6: have that in the back of my mind as I'm
- 50:09Speaker 6: working to the old marketing stuff. I did a soundtrack
- 50:13Speaker 6: for uh Monster Squad once with Mondo and it's death
- 50:19Speaker 6: Waltz became Mondo, but it was Mondo and and it
- 50:23Speaker 6: was all based on like the old uh you know
- 50:26Speaker 6: uh ads in the back of a comic book, and
- 50:29Speaker 6: so it was like taking the Monster Squad but putting
- 50:32Speaker 6: them in that kind of classified ad world.
- 50:35Speaker 5: Of like, well, what could you buy from like the
- 50:37Speaker 5: clubhouse like kind.
- 50:39Speaker 6: Of my kind of vibe and just kind of made
- 50:43Speaker 6: it something unique and interesting. And I try to kind
- 50:46Speaker 6: of come up with these little hooks to sort of
- 50:50Speaker 6: you know, to sort of like grab onto and and
- 50:54Speaker 6: and and you know, what can I do with like
- 50:57Speaker 6: this this theme? What can I do with like this
- 50:59Speaker 6: uh this object? You know, what's what's this? What's this
- 51:02Speaker 6: crazy idea I can shoehorn into this movie?
- 51:05Speaker 3: Yeah, you mentioned Herschel Gordon Lewis and his I mean
- 51:08Speaker 3: the original work, the black and white ones that you
- 51:10Speaker 3: can talk about with the splash of red I love,
- 51:12Speaker 3: but I I love once once his distribution started with
- 51:17Speaker 3: something weird or like some of the Wizard at Home
- 51:18Speaker 3: Video ones where they started like really colorizing them, like
- 51:22Speaker 3: the Wizard of Gore poster. I will never forget the
- 51:25Speaker 3: red with the like I used to love how they
- 51:27Speaker 3: did the titles at the top, and oh my god,
- 51:29Speaker 3: I love.
- 51:30Speaker 5: Them right now.
- 51:31Speaker 6: I'm so inspired by movie titles. Actually do do get
- 51:35Speaker 6: to do some sometimes. I've done some movie titles and
- 51:38Speaker 6: some credit designs. I would love to do more. I mean,
- 51:41Speaker 6: you know, I would love to like animate an intro.
- 51:44Speaker 5: For a cool series, you know, or yeah, or or
- 51:48Speaker 5: like you know, sort of handle the design on some
- 51:51Speaker 5: of that stuff. Who knows.
- 51:53Speaker 6: I mean I've done I've done a lot of really
- 51:55Speaker 6: cool like movie titles that have. You know, I love
- 51:59Speaker 6: doing hand and type, you know, I love doing all that.
- 52:01Speaker 5: It's all.
- 52:02Speaker 6: It all comes from those those old posters, like those
- 52:05Speaker 6: old those old adverts and those old marketing materials. You know,
- 52:10Speaker 6: they weren't even considered art back then, you know, they
- 52:13Speaker 6: you know, they weren't. They were just like you You
- 52:15Speaker 6: never knew who drew them, You never knew where they
- 52:18Speaker 6: were done. They were just like they would appear and
- 52:20Speaker 6: be thrown in the garbage when the movies were done.
- 52:23Speaker 5: They're run right.
- 52:25Speaker 6: And but now it's like, as you know, people appreciate
- 52:31Speaker 6: that mat now more than ever.
- 52:32Speaker 5: Now now poster artists are being recognized for their work.
- 52:35Speaker 3: And well, who was it, I don't know if it
- 52:38Speaker 3: was Drews, Drew Zander, who was it that started hiding
- 52:41Speaker 3: the signature in the art work.
- 52:43Speaker 5: I think it was John Alvin.
- 52:46Speaker 3: John Alvin right started like hiding like tucking it in places.
- 52:49Speaker 3: You had to find it.
- 52:50Speaker 6: You had to find it and I always thought that
- 52:52Speaker 6: was clever, right, Like, you know, it's like I'm gonna
- 52:54Speaker 6: get in there and I'm gonna hide my signature on
- 52:57Speaker 6: this thing.
- 52:58Speaker 5: Yeah, but do you like that?
- 53:00Speaker 3: It was that?
- 53:01Speaker 5: What was that?
- 53:02Speaker 3: It was that documentary that came out about posters. It
- 53:04Speaker 3: was what was it called not two.
- 53:09Speaker 6: Yeah, twenty four x thirty six? Absolutely, yeah. My friend
- 53:11Speaker 6: Kevin Burke directed.
- 53:13Speaker 3: It, and yeah, that was an incredible document I had
- 53:16Speaker 3: never never heard of it. I stumbled across it, like
- 53:18Speaker 3: I think on like two B and H blitz through
- 53:21Speaker 3: it in a night, and it was incredibly fascinating. I
- 53:24Speaker 3: think actually, honestly, I probably bought more posters after watching
- 53:27Speaker 3: that documentary than ever before in my life. It kind
- 53:30Speaker 3: of kind of unlocked something.
- 53:31Speaker 5: It was.
- 53:32Speaker 6: It was cool to sort of see him like I was,
- 53:34Speaker 6: you know, right there with him as he was making it.
- 53:38Speaker 5: You know, we had a booth at Mondo Con and
- 53:42Speaker 5: he came down one year and he had to interview
- 53:44Speaker 5: the Mono Con guys and we he came down with
- 53:48Speaker 5: Nicole and I one year and yeah, we did that
- 53:50Speaker 5: and then he got all the interviews he needed in
- 53:52Speaker 5: Austin and kind of seeing him put this thing together
- 53:55Speaker 5: and being a part of it was amazing. And you
- 53:57Speaker 5: know some of my peers are in there too, like
- 54:00Speaker 5: Matt Ryan Tobin and Sarah Deck and Creative Justin and Page.
- 54:06Speaker 6: You know, they're in there. Jason Emison's in there, Like
- 54:09Speaker 6: the whole Canadian crew was in there.
- 54:11Speaker 5: And then you know they went down and he talked.
- 54:13Speaker 8: To like the big guys in the US, you know,
- 54:16Speaker 8: the post artists there, Rob Jones and Mondo and anyway,
- 54:20Speaker 8: it was a fun documentary to be a part of
- 54:22Speaker 8: because it was sort of like came out around the
- 54:25Speaker 8: time when you know, Blu ray covers, you know.
- 54:28Speaker 6: Weren't so great, and sort of like I think it was.
- 54:33Speaker 6: I think the spirit of that movie was, Yes, it
- 54:36Speaker 6: was about silkscreen posters and alternative movie posters, but I
- 54:41Speaker 6: also think that that mini boom was also an answer
- 54:44Speaker 6: to the really terrible floating head artwork that was coming
- 54:49Speaker 6: out of really bad amateur photoshop jobs that were becoming posters.
- 54:54Speaker 6: And you know, I think I think that movie sort
- 54:59Speaker 6: of was also a mini commentary on that as well,
- 55:02Speaker 6: and that you know, you can have better, You can
- 55:06Speaker 6: even if it has even has to be a photograph,
- 55:08Speaker 6: you can still be better if you look at like,
- 55:10Speaker 6: you know, Dustin Hoffman's you know, dog Day Night posters,
- 55:14Speaker 6: you know those seventies photograph posters are incredible, right so.
- 55:18Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, well it's like and I do a series
- 55:22Speaker 3: on my Instagram through like reels called the Art of
- 55:24Speaker 3: Physical Media, And the other day I did one on
- 55:29Speaker 3: because I think it's like one of my favorite pieces
- 55:30Speaker 3: that come out alone time on Matt Ryan's X trilogy
- 55:34Speaker 3: that he did for the novelizations. Yes, yeah, with the
- 55:38Speaker 3: book absolutely incredible, Like the artwork on those are phenomenal,
- 55:44Speaker 3: and to think that they're just on these little mass
- 55:46Speaker 3: market paperbacks, like, yeah, I was staring at them one
- 55:50Speaker 3: day and I'm like, these are like I'm literally holding
- 55:53Speaker 3: works of art. Like the detail is incredible, The cohesion
- 55:57Speaker 3: between the three books is stunning. Yeah, yeah, like that's
- 56:01Speaker 3: and it's cool for a company like A twenty four
- 56:03Speaker 3: to hire somebody to do for this little, tiny like
- 56:07Speaker 3: book that fits in my back pocket. You know, It's
- 56:08Speaker 3: it's incredible to see and we have to we have
- 56:11Speaker 3: to find ways, you know, through social media, to continue
- 56:15Speaker 3: talking about this stuff and showing it off the best
- 56:17Speaker 3: we can. Because I got messages from people, right when
- 56:20Speaker 3: that video went live, that were like, dude, I've never
- 56:22Speaker 3: seen these. I just went on Barnes and Noble and
- 56:24Speaker 3: Bottom like it's people are still discovering them.
- 56:28Speaker 5: No, that's great. Yeah, I know, you know that's good.
- 56:30Speaker 5: You know, I mean, it's I was happy to see
- 56:33Speaker 5: that too. You know.
- 56:33Speaker 6: It's it's really cool that you know, we get to
- 56:37Speaker 6: do some of these really cool projects, and you know,
- 56:39Speaker 6: we get to work with like these publishers that you know,
- 56:43Speaker 6: your artwork's getting out there, like those books are everywhere. Right,
- 56:47Speaker 6: it's great to see, you know, it's it's that's what,
- 56:51Speaker 6: that's what, That's what.
- 56:51Speaker 5: My goal is.
- 56:52Speaker 6: I guess my goal is to to get my artwork
- 56:54Speaker 6: in front of as many horror fans as I can.
- 56:56Speaker 6: And that's kind of the the mantra that I've been
- 56:59Speaker 6: kind of and you know, yeah, since I started doing freelance,
- 57:05Speaker 6: and it was like, you know, I just want to
- 57:07Speaker 6: keep keep getting my artwork in front of as many
- 57:10Speaker 6: horror fans as I can.
- 57:11Speaker 5: That's really all. That's really all I can do.
- 57:13Speaker 6: And I love doing it, and I love doing conventions, and.
- 57:20Speaker 5: You know, it's just been kind of part of part
- 57:22Speaker 5: of what I do and I love it. Well, I was.
- 57:29Speaker 4: I was gonna mention speaking, I know we were touching
- 57:32Speaker 4: on horror in Canada, but you also did the piece
- 57:35Speaker 4: for In a Violent.
- 57:36Speaker 5: Nature correct, Yes, yeah, yeah again a really cool Canadian
- 57:41Speaker 5: Canadian movie.
- 57:43Speaker 4: Oh big fan.
- 57:45Speaker 3: Yeah, we covered that movie on here. I think we've
- 57:47Speaker 3: done what two episodes with the kind of like a
- 57:50Speaker 3: round and of on the nature, right, Steve, Yeah.
- 57:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I love that story behind that was I So
- 57:56Speaker 5: I did that piece of art work with made.
- 57:59Speaker 6: By Mutant, which was like some of the old Mondo
- 58:02Speaker 6: directors that started Mutant, and you know, I was like.
- 58:07Speaker 5: Hey there, I I was you know, asked them if
- 58:11Speaker 5: I could do it, basically because I said, hey, look
- 58:13Speaker 5: I'm Canadian. I know the filmmaker Chris Nash. Chris Nash story.
- 58:18Speaker 6: Uh, he did some short films way back in like
- 58:23Speaker 6: the magazine days that I thought were amazing and always
- 58:26Speaker 6: kind of like, you know, would see him around and
- 58:28Speaker 6: then he's doing this slasher and it's like holy shit,
- 58:30Speaker 6: you know, like some of my other friends too, and
- 58:33Speaker 6: your producer there, and just to see them like you know,
- 58:37Speaker 6: at film festivals and now they've got like this amazing movie.
- 58:41Speaker 6: It just felt like it came out of nowhere for
- 58:43Speaker 6: me because I talked to them in a little while,
- 58:46Speaker 6: and then I really kind of fought to do that
- 58:49Speaker 6: poster because I just really wanted to to do it
- 58:53Speaker 6: to support the Canadian horror films and and and support
- 58:58Speaker 6: my friends, and and I just kind of like thought that,
- 59:02Speaker 6: you know, what they were doing was something totally unique
- 59:04Speaker 6: that no other horror film is done, and it's been
- 59:07Speaker 6: a pretty divisive horror film, you know.
- 59:10Speaker 5: So which I love.
- 59:12Speaker 6: I think I think horror movie should be divisive, and
- 59:15Speaker 6: so you know, absolutely wanted to do that. And so yeah,
- 59:20Speaker 6: became the Steel book cover, which is great, and then
- 59:22Speaker 6: we did a screenprint and we did a very secret
- 59:26Speaker 6: poster with Shutter too. It's kind of looks like the
- 59:30Speaker 6: Frive thirteenth Part two one sheet where it's just the
- 59:32Speaker 6: type and so there's a third variant out there too
- 59:36Speaker 6: that we did and we did it just for the
- 59:39Speaker 6: Shutter employees.
- 59:39Speaker 5: So that was kind of fun. And so I always
- 59:45Speaker 5: make sure to bring some of those with me when
- 59:47Speaker 5: I'm at shows because you know, there's there's actually a
- 59:49Speaker 5: lot of fans that I meet for that movie. For
- 59:51Speaker 5: in a Violent Nature, Actually.
- 59:55Speaker 3: No, I was you canna say we had. We interviewed
- 59:57Speaker 3: Lauren Marie Taylor, and I think both of us were
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: like chomping into bits to get to where we could
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: talk about environment nature. It was more than Thirteenth Part two,
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: you know, yeah.
- 1:00:07Speaker 6: Of course, of course, yeah, yeah, right, So, I mean,
- 1:00:10Speaker 6: I don't know, I can't wait to see the sequel,
- 1:00:12Speaker 6: you know, I know that's.
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: Very excited right now. Yeah, it's it's great, you know.
- 1:00:18Speaker 6: So that was again another another fun project that I
- 1:00:21Speaker 6: got to contribute to.
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: Well, I'm not gonna lie. I had to buy the
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: movie twice because I initially got a Blu ray and
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: then I saw that the four case steel book had
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: your art on it. I was like, I got to
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: add that to the collection. It's just, you know, I
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: feel like that captures the essence of this movie.
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: Oh, thanks so much. I appreciate it. That's awesome. Yeah,
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: I I hope to maybe do a poster for the sequel.
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: I guess I'm if anyone's listening, I'd love to do
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: a poster for the sequel.
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: Very excited for that was I was gonna ask. So,
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: I mean, with boutique labels or you know, anyone you're
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: collaborating with like how much creative freedom do they give
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: you or does it kind of vary by project?
- 1:01:03Speaker 6: Then it it can depend I mean it does depend
- 1:01:07Speaker 6: on the project. Sometimes if if I'm hired by, say
- 1:01:11Speaker 6: a marketing team, they usually have something in mind that
- 1:01:13Speaker 6: they want, if it's say, like for an alternative movie,
- 1:01:18Speaker 6: print for an older movie, licensers or whatever. They'll come
- 1:01:22Speaker 6: to me and just kind of let me do my
- 1:01:23Speaker 6: thing and I'll present ideas, and that's you know nice.
- 1:01:27Speaker 6: I like to kind of just with older movies especially,
- 1:01:30Speaker 6: you know, kind of reinterpret them somehow, and so that's
- 1:01:34Speaker 6: always fun. Sometimes they'll have a suggestion that they want
- 1:01:36Speaker 6: to see for sure. You know, it really does depend
- 1:01:40Speaker 6: on the project. Other times, you know, uh, it's yeah,
- 1:01:46Speaker 6: show us what you've gotten. I'll just I'll show six
- 1:01:49Speaker 6: four to six ideas, three to six ideas. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:01:54Speaker 6: I try to. I try to, like, you know, just
- 1:01:57Speaker 6: sort of show a variety of directions so that I'm
- 1:02:00Speaker 6: covering my bases and and and and sometimes it is
- 1:02:03Speaker 6: a bit of a mind reading trick. You have to
- 1:02:06Speaker 6: sort of know your clients and what they're looking for
- 1:02:08Speaker 6: and what kind of type of artwork they want or
- 1:02:11Speaker 6: sometimes you have to sort of like a chameleon sometimes
- 1:02:17Speaker 6: like cop a style, like sometimes they want it to
- 1:02:19Speaker 6: look like a stile a certain era.
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: They want. They want something to look like a seventies
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: poster looks different than an eighties poster, that type of thing,
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: you know, So you have to kind of I I
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: feel like I have to be able to adapt to
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: a lot of different styles sometimes to to get my
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: thing across.
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: Well, you guys, do you like I know you do
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: a lot of the freelance stuff, But how much how much,
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: like let's say, in like a monthly basis, are you
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: doing just on your own?
- 1:02:52Speaker 5: You know?
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: Just Hey, I'm going to sit down and you know,
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: I have an idea for an alternate, you know, poster
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: for this. Are you doing a lot of that?
- 1:02:59Speaker 6: I do a little bit of a I do very
- 1:03:01Speaker 6: little of that, but I do sometimes because I I
- 1:03:04Speaker 6: gotta be honest, Like, I don't idle.
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: I'm always I I don't like to sit around. I
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: if I'm if I'm.
- 1:03:10Speaker 6: Waiting in between approvals, I'll start up printing for myself
- 1:03:13Speaker 6: for sure, because I have conventions that you know, I
- 1:03:18Speaker 6: do and I need to pay for and I have
- 1:03:21Speaker 6: you know, stuff that I want to do. We you know,
- 1:03:23Speaker 6: so if I've always word I'm always working in between
- 1:03:28Speaker 6: freelance work, I'm always working always.
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: You have to, you have to.
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's like I've always considered myself like
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: a creative person, whether it's through writing or through videography
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: or photography. And you know, now it's kind of like, uh,
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: gotten to the point where I do kind of feel
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: like social media is a little bit of a like
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: a job and I have to do part of it. Yeah,
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: And there's there's so much too that I that I
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: am constantly playing without side of whatever you know it's
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: happening on social media because I I it's almost like
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: I don't know if you've ever seen James Gunn Suicide
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: Squad with Polka Dot Man where he just gets so
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: pent up then he's got to blow the Poka dots out.
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: It's kind of like that, like like once a day,
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: I have to do something creative that's not for anything.
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: It's just me hmm doing something.
- 1:04:21Speaker 5: And it can be tough to like, you know, have
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: the energy for that some days, right, and but you know.
- 1:04:27Speaker 6: You just got to keep to me. It is like,
- 1:04:29Speaker 6: you know, like freelance. No matter what type of freelance
- 1:04:32Speaker 6: you're doing, if you're working for yourself, it's a hustle.
- 1:04:34Speaker 6: It's a it's a daily hustle. And and you're always
- 1:04:39Speaker 6: working towards just working towards something bigger than what you're
- 1:04:44Speaker 6: doing yesterday. Right, You're just working towards something you know,
- 1:04:49Speaker 6: you know, hopefully bigger and better.
- 1:04:51Speaker 5: And and and and and.
- 1:04:53Speaker 6: And I just try to stay focused on the job
- 1:04:56Speaker 6: that I have at hand. And and I have some
- 1:04:58Speaker 6: ideas that I want to get too as well. I
- 1:05:00Speaker 6: can't wait to get to this idea that I have
- 1:05:02Speaker 6: in my head.
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: And then if I have a lull in between freelance,
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: I'll fire that idea and uh, I'll get that done
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: for something, you know.
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: Yeah, if you had to, Steve, I know you have
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: a question, but I have to ask this real quick.
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: If you had absolute freedom to do like a hardcover
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: deluxe artwork for any king material, which could you choose?
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: Oh? You know what?
- 1:05:30Speaker 6: I I loved pet cemetery. Yeah, I loved pet cemetery.
- 1:05:35Speaker 6: When I grew up, that one, that one messed me up.
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: I also really liked that. I also really liked the
- 1:05:42Speaker 5: shining as well, that was another book that I really
- 1:05:48Speaker 5: I thought was scarier than the movie. Mm hm, I
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: felt the book was scarier than I love the movie.
- 1:05:55Speaker 5: I'm not not in the movie, and uh, you know
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: we know that even King wasn't a fan of Kuberg's movie.
- 1:06:03Speaker 5: But yeah, I felt like scenes the the room two
- 1:06:07Speaker 5: three seven scene, which I think is two seventeen in
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: the book. Yeah, terrifying, way more scared, way way more
- 1:06:16Speaker 5: scary in the book.
- 1:06:17Speaker 6: Like I I remember, I was pretty young when I
- 1:06:20Speaker 6: read it, and uh, like thirteen fourteen, you know, you
- 1:06:24Speaker 6: start to get into like, you know, maybe a little older,
- 1:06:27Speaker 6: but like, I just remember not being able to go
- 1:06:30Speaker 6: to sleep that night after reading that chapter A career
- 1:06:33Speaker 6: in the bathtub and shit.
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: I didn't want to go to the washroom. I didn't
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: want to go to the washing bathtub.
- 1:06:42Speaker 4: Oh nightmare.
- 1:06:44Speaker 5: It was totally nightmare. Fuel and his books is when
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: I was, you know, when I was consuming all this
- 1:06:49Speaker 5: stuff and still am I was. I was loving it
- 1:06:53Speaker 5: like I wanted.
- 1:06:54Speaker 6: I wanted that thriller being scared, I want like I
- 1:06:56Speaker 6: loved HP love Craft too.
- 1:06:58Speaker 5: I was reading into stuff. I was reading a little
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: bit of po Uh, I was reading a little, a
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: couple of Coon's books.
- 1:07:09Speaker 6: I read a couple of Kot's books. But my my,
- 1:07:14Speaker 6: my mom was a big reader and she was reading
- 1:07:15Speaker 6: Stephen King and she would, you know, have all these
- 1:07:19Speaker 6: books in the house. And the Stephen King once jumped
- 1:07:21Speaker 6: right out of me because of the covers.
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: And those covers, I will also say, inspired me as
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: much as a VHS movie cover would. Oh, I'm dripping.
- 1:07:32Speaker 6: Around the VHS stiles and I'm looking at all this stuff.
- 1:07:35Speaker 6: And then I'm going to the record stores and I'm
- 1:07:37Speaker 6: looking at all the Maiden covers and all that great artwork,
- 1:07:39Speaker 6: and you know, and then I'm reading cool book covers
- 1:07:44Speaker 6: like I'm reading book you know these book covers, like
- 1:07:47Speaker 6: you know, the Shining one really jumped out of me.
- 1:07:49Speaker 6: It's a graphic design one. It's just really simple. It's
- 1:07:52Speaker 6: a little it's all black and gray and it's just
- 1:07:55Speaker 6: it's just Danny's head. It's just really super graphic.
- 1:07:58Speaker 5: I don't know if you've seen it, it's like, yeah,
- 1:08:01Speaker 5: it's if I were to design that, it might just
- 1:08:03Speaker 5: take It looks like it took someone five minutes, but
- 1:08:06Speaker 5: it didn't. But it looks so simple, but it's so
- 1:08:11Speaker 5: eerie and cool that I think that's that's the kind
- 1:08:14Speaker 5: of stuff I hang my hat on. I love that
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: kind of design.
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: That was the paperback one, right, Yes, the we have that,
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: and then I also have I think my wife and
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: I also have an addition of John Russo's Night of
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: the Living Dead that's sort of that same effect. It's
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: a black cover and it has the little girl in
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: the front with like it almost like a silver foil.
- 1:08:35Speaker 5: Sure over, yeah, look at that. It could be inspired
- 1:08:39Speaker 5: by that cover, right.
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: I think it's very hard. Oh okay, so it's not
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: exactly the same, but it's uh kind of got like this.
- 1:08:51Speaker 5: Oh I've seen that. Yeah, that's that's yeah, not.
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: Not as not as plain as the shining one. But
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: I remember looking at this and kind of getting the
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: same mm hmm from it, you know.
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: And and you know when we were doing those Stephen
- 1:09:04Speaker 5: King book covers, that's what they when they when they
- 1:09:06Speaker 5: it was random House that found me and the art
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: director there, Mark uh Abraham's great, great art director.
- 1:09:17Speaker 6: You know he does all their titles and he's in
- 1:09:19Speaker 6: charge of all their titles right anyway, so.
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: You know, they they they contacted me and said we
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: want like an eighties style poster looked to like this
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: new line of his vintage books. Now they only have
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: up until.
- 1:09:35Speaker 6: The Shining, like they only have up until the Shining, right,
- 1:09:38Speaker 6: they don't have Kujo or pet Cemetery a whole other
- 1:09:42Speaker 6: publisher that homes.
- 1:09:44Speaker 5: But my goal would be to do those one day,
- 1:09:47Speaker 5: you know.
- 1:09:48Speaker 6: But luckily I've been working with Random House and I
- 1:09:54Speaker 6: got to work on the original books that made him,
- 1:09:58Speaker 6: you know, the author that he is and the horror
- 1:10:01Speaker 6: icon that he is. And those those first five books
- 1:10:04Speaker 6: are those are his bangers, right, like those are his
- 1:10:08Speaker 6: greatest hits.
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: It's gotta be special for sure.
- 1:10:12Speaker 6: Yeah, And I I, you know, I I just yeah,
- 1:10:16Speaker 6: there's times where you're just like wow, I kind of
- 1:10:18Speaker 6: look at them and go, I can't believe I did those,
- 1:10:20Speaker 6: you know, like that was such a you know, and
- 1:10:23Speaker 6: and you know, uh, there was a little bit of pressure.
- 1:10:27Speaker 6: You know, there was a little bit of a little
- 1:10:30Speaker 6: bit of pressure. And it's like when you get like
- 1:10:33Speaker 6: these big clients like Mad Magazine. I've done a few
- 1:10:36Speaker 6: covers for for Mad Magazine and they're based aut l
- 1:10:40Speaker 6: A now and they're they're owned by d C Comics,
- 1:10:43Speaker 6: And this is d C Comics, Right, these are our
- 1:10:45Speaker 6: directors that work with d C Comics, and and and
- 1:10:48Speaker 6: and you know, so they they they worked with like
- 1:10:53Speaker 6: huge artists, big, you know.
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: And I just remember the pressure for my first Mad
- 1:10:57Speaker 5: Magazine cover was a mets.
- 1:10:58Speaker 6: I like, wow, I've got to tap into like, uh,
- 1:11:02Speaker 6: Norman Rockwell, Americana pop culture, pretty Newman pop culture illustration,
- 1:11:09Speaker 6: fifties illustration style, you know what I mean. Like it was,
- 1:11:13Speaker 6: you know, I I I painted it in in photoshop
- 1:11:17Speaker 6: and you know, on you know, by hand, and uh
- 1:11:23Speaker 6: you know, I you know, I did it. But it
- 1:11:25Speaker 6: was it was that first cover was a real challenge.
- 1:11:30Speaker 6: Second one was easier, and third one was easier.
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: Yeah, Man magazine, Wow crazy, Yeah, I was gonna, I
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: was gonna.
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: Have you ever had like director or filmmaker personally react
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: to one of your pieces before in the past?
- 1:11:48Speaker 5: I I have, Yes, Yeah, And uh sometimes it's like
- 1:11:53Speaker 5: an email, Okay, Sometimes it's an email.
- 1:12:00Speaker 6: Sometimes it's in person, like if you're at a convention,
- 1:12:03Speaker 6: like like I had a Marcus came up and said, I,
- 1:12:05Speaker 6: you know.
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: I love this artwork. Yeah, you know, he signed my
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: He signed my thing right then and there, and you know,
- 1:12:11Speaker 5: and then and then but we became in some friends,
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: right like it's like you know, and so that was
- 1:12:16Speaker 5: one occasion. But one one of the one of the
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: funniest times, or at least one of the best times
- 1:12:22Speaker 5: for anything like that, was I was at Horrorhound weekend
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: and I they had a reanimator.
- 1:12:30Speaker 6: Cast reunion, okay and uh and so Stewart was was
- 1:12:36Speaker 6: alive back then. This is around twenty sixteen, maybe I
- 1:12:41Speaker 6: want to say it was a few years after the.
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: Record the Charles Richard banda the Waxwork record came.
- 1:12:47Speaker 6: Out, and I had, you know whatever I I you know,
- 1:12:50Speaker 6: I was at had my boot there and I, you know,
- 1:12:54Speaker 6: I've been doing Horrorhound every year for so long. Anyway,
- 1:12:58Speaker 6: So I'm there and this guy walks up to me.
- 1:13:02Speaker 6: He's like, hey, by the way, uh, Jeffrey Combs really
- 1:13:06Speaker 6: wants to talk to you. He wants to meet you
- 1:13:09Speaker 6: because he loves that artwork that he did for Waxford Records.
- 1:13:14Speaker 5: And I said, oh, awesome, I.
- 1:13:17Speaker 6: Got to save one here and then I'll get them
- 1:13:20Speaker 6: to sign one, right, And so I was gonna go
- 1:13:25Speaker 6: at some point, but you know, you're busy at your booth.
- 1:13:27Speaker 6: It's hard just to kind of take.
- 1:13:28Speaker 5: Off at anything totally. All of a sudden, I see
- 1:13:31Speaker 5: Jeffrey Combs walking towards me and he's like, you're the guy.
- 1:13:35Speaker 5: You're the guy, and I'm like, I'm the guy. You're
- 1:13:41Speaker 5: the guy that did this artwork. And I was like yes, yes,
- 1:13:44Speaker 5: and he's like, we love this.
- 1:13:45Speaker 6: Artwork and I was like, oh, thanks so much, like yeah,
- 1:13:48Speaker 6: I love the movie and he's like, follow me, and
- 1:13:52Speaker 6: I was follow Jeffrey Combs into the next room over.
- 1:13:55Speaker 5: That's when I dumped my booth. I just dumped it right.
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: There, you have to.
- 1:14:00Speaker 6: And then I, you know, I followed him and he's like, everybody,
- 1:14:03Speaker 6: this is Gary. He did the poster, he did the
- 1:14:06Speaker 6: artwork that we've been signing at the convention, and it
- 1:14:09Speaker 6: was Barbara was there and Stuart and Daniel his co star,
- 1:14:14Speaker 6: you know, the writer was there and they all took
- 1:14:18Speaker 6: a photo with me with it and they all signed
- 1:14:20Speaker 6: my poster and I couldn't.
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: Believe it, Like I was like surreal, that.
- 1:14:26Speaker 5: Was really surreal.
- 1:14:26Speaker 6: That Yeah, that was a moment where I was like
- 1:14:28Speaker 6: this is why I do this, or at least you know,
- 1:14:33Speaker 6: that was something that I never would have imagined when
- 1:14:38Speaker 6: I was a kid watching Reanimator and your parents are
- 1:14:41Speaker 6: upstairs and you're watching your Animator, that I was gonna,
- 1:14:45Speaker 6: you know, get to meet, you know, anyone to do
- 1:14:50Speaker 6: with the film or anything, because back then we're just
- 1:14:54Speaker 6: watching the movies. We're just we're not like, oh, we.
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: Get to go to this convention and you ask them
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: a question and I want to know this, and I
- 1:15:02Speaker 5: want to know that, and I'm learning the ins and
- 1:15:04Speaker 5: outs of all this stuff and I'm I'm learning the
- 1:15:06Speaker 5: mechanics behind it. Now. You know, when you're you know.
- 1:15:10Speaker 6: At that impressionable age, you're just that that that horror
- 1:15:13Speaker 6: fan just watching these things for the first time, and
- 1:15:15Speaker 6: then you're gonna, if you love it enough, you watch
- 1:15:17Speaker 6: it a billion times.
- 1:15:19Speaker 5: And that feeling doesn't go away. No, not at all,
- 1:15:22Speaker 5: not not not for some of.
- 1:15:24Speaker 6: These movies, that feeling doesn't go away. And that's that's
- 1:15:27Speaker 6: kind of what keeps me, kind of keeps me going
- 1:15:29Speaker 6: some on this stuff.
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:15:31Speaker 3: Yeah, Steve, I don't know if there's a better place
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: for us to wrap up than with that story.
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: Man, that is I think that's it. I don't think
- 1:15:43Speaker 4: you can top that.
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: Oh my god, Well, Gary, is there anything I mean, obviously,
- 1:15:49Speaker 3: I know you can't talk about a lot of stuff
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: that you're working on, but anything that's been announced or
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: anything that we should be looking forward to from you? Anything?
- 1:15:56Speaker 6: Oh man, it's it's it's always everything's so top see
- 1:16:00Speaker 6: it right, Like it's like I worked for the Cages
- 1:16:02Speaker 6: or something, right, But yeah, No, Like I was trying
- 1:16:08Speaker 6: to think before, like what can I What can I?
- 1:16:09Speaker 6: Because I it does come up, but it's like, what
- 1:16:12Speaker 6: am I working on that I can actually tell somebody?
- 1:16:14Speaker 6: You know, everything's just an approval land right now, and
- 1:16:17Speaker 6: I'm just waiting and waiting on some some cool announcements.
- 1:16:21Speaker 6: I can't say that I'm doing more with Terror Vision.
- 1:16:24Speaker 5: You know. I've been working with those guys a lot.
- 1:16:27Speaker 5: Got some more soundtrack designs coming out with them Exit
- 1:16:32Speaker 5: uh Aero video.
- 1:16:34Speaker 6: I just finished something with them that like, I just
- 1:16:37Speaker 6: love this movie. It's for me an untapped eighties movie
- 1:16:41Speaker 6: that uh is it untapped? I don't know, I'm saying,
- 1:16:46Speaker 6: you know, it's a movie that I I hadn't seen
- 1:16:48Speaker 6: it a long time and everyone knows it. It's like
- 1:16:51Speaker 6: one of those right under the nose movies that it's
- 1:16:53Speaker 6: like Oh yeah, that movie's cool. Yeah, so that I
- 1:16:57Speaker 6: got to do the four K for that, and I
- 1:17:00Speaker 6: can't wait because it's gonna have, you know, all the
- 1:17:01Speaker 6: special features, and you know, I can't.
- 1:17:03Speaker 5: I can't wait for that. I'm trying to think of
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: I can. Actually it's like I'm lying.
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: I'm just I'm waiting for the Freddy vrus Chason.
- 1:17:14Speaker 5: Yeah right right, yeah, just more fucking cool stuff.
- 1:17:24Speaker 6: You know, I don't know, I'm a great I'm pretty
- 1:17:26Speaker 6: lucky to be able to work with some pretty amazing
- 1:17:29Speaker 6: companies and and and uh.
- 1:17:33Speaker 5: And just be like this, this horror fan that likes
- 1:17:36Speaker 5: to draw. Oh yeah, yeah, I just kind of love
- 1:17:40Speaker 5: doing it.
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: Hopefully we'll be able to catch you at a convention
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: in the near future.
- 1:17:45Speaker 5: What once you guys you said monster Mania? Is that
- 1:17:47Speaker 5: the one you mentioned earlier?
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: So that once you guys too, that's near me here
- 1:17:51Speaker 3: in Jersey, well Jersey, Philip Philly they do one as well.
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: And then I think, Steve, you have a couple near you, right.
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: I go to I have been to Horror how down Cincinnati.
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: Sometimes, I I'll usually yearly, I'll try to go down
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: to Scarefest on Lexington Kentucky.
- 1:18:07Speaker 5: Of her Scarefest. Yeah, yes, I.
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: Feel like you would really dig that. That has gotten
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: so big over the last couple of years. So those
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: are like the two main ones I'll go to. Unfortunately,
- 1:18:17Speaker 4: Michigan doesn't have like real big conventions like that, so
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: usually I'm willing to go the distance for one if
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: it's worth it.
- 1:18:25Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a great thing about the US is that
- 1:18:27Speaker 6: there are so many horror conventions. Like I feel like
- 1:18:30Speaker 6: every state has one or three, you know, at any time.
- 1:18:35Speaker 6: And you know, I've in Canada, there's there's a there's
- 1:18:39Speaker 6: a couple of cool ones for sure, but just nothing.
- 1:18:42Speaker 5: Like the US.
- 1:18:43Speaker 6: Uh Yeah, I just think because a lot of actors
- 1:18:46Speaker 6: live in the US and you know, movie you know,
- 1:18:50Speaker 6: you know, Canada has a long sorted history of you know,
- 1:18:55Speaker 6: like Canadian movies that I'm proud of, but like, you know,
- 1:19:00Speaker 6: the movie influence definitely has come from the US. So
- 1:19:04Speaker 6: I feel like that's why conventions are just more popular
- 1:19:07Speaker 6: down there.
- 1:19:07Speaker 5: But I am going to be doing a couple of
- 1:19:12Speaker 5: conventions coming up. There's the mass Mini Con It's in Boston, Massachusetts,
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: and that is since I think it's like Friday, the
- 1:19:24Speaker 5: September eleventh to like the thirteenth, and a horror panel
- 1:19:29Speaker 5: which is gonna be a lot of fun. They asked
- 1:19:31Speaker 5: me to do a panel, and it's gonna be with
- 1:19:35Speaker 5: my friend Sarah Deck, who's an amazing horror illustrator movie
- 1:19:39Speaker 5: poster artist. You should check her out. And Steven and Andraid.
- 1:19:44Speaker 5: He's another amazing horror inspired artist that does like alternative
- 1:19:50Speaker 5: movie poster style stuff and a lot of verry. He's
- 1:19:54Speaker 5: got a really great culpi kind of feel. Again, there's
- 1:19:58Speaker 5: two amazing artists that I get to go on stage
- 1:20:00Speaker 5: with them talk about poor art with And that's gonna
- 1:20:03Speaker 5: be at Maas Mini Con, so you know that's gonna
- 1:20:07Speaker 5: be something fun.
- 1:20:09Speaker 6: And then I'm gonna be in Winnipeg, Canada for Winnipeg
- 1:20:12Speaker 6: Comic Con and they always have a couple of cool
- 1:20:16Speaker 6: horror guests there. They've got like a They've got like
- 1:20:19Speaker 6: Michael Ironside there and they're.
- 1:20:21Speaker 5: Doing like a They've got Jake Bucy and they're doing
- 1:20:27Speaker 5: like a Starship Troopers thing. I got a scary space
- 1:20:31Speaker 5: theme and but I work with those guys and do
- 1:20:36Speaker 5: some artwork with those guys.
- 1:20:37Speaker 6: So and they've been you know, bringing me into shows
- 1:20:42Speaker 6: too in Canada, like they I went to Montreal Montreal
- 1:20:45Speaker 6: Comic Con with them and bringing me in as a guest,
- 1:20:48Speaker 6: which is nice because I don't seem to do a
- 1:20:51Speaker 6: lot of conventions up in Canada and I'm trying to
- 1:20:53Speaker 6: do more so and they've been great to work.
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: Yeah, so I'm hoping we can get out to more.
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: I mean the show over the last two years we've
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: been doing this has been growing and we are part
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: of the Someone's Favorite Productions podcast network who I'm not
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: sure if you follow Disconnected he does like a now
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: physical media announcement stuff. He's one of the owners of
- 1:21:16Speaker 3: Antenna Releasing. Now they're opening in partnership with def Crocodile,
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: a physical media store and microcinema in Missouri. So we're
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: hoping to get out there sometimes, you know, it's exciting
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: get out a little bit more and try to Monster
- 1:21:36Speaker 3: Mania is literally like I could. It takes me five
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: minutes to walk to the venue.
- 1:21:40Speaker 5: It's at here in Jersey, right in your backyard. Yeah,
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: it's beautiful. So I mean, I go ahead, and.
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: I was gonna say, we're hoping to get out more
- 1:21:48Speaker 3: and over the next couple of years, do a lot
- 1:21:50Speaker 3: more of that.
- 1:21:50Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, there's there's ones I would like to hit up,
- 1:21:54Speaker 6: like right now, the ones that kind of I've always
- 1:21:56Speaker 6: sort of stuck with or at least.
- 1:21:58Speaker 5: Are on the radar right now.
- 1:22:01Speaker 6: I'm doing Monster Palooza again next year. Uh Texas fright Mare.
- 1:22:06Speaker 6: I always do every year. They've been amazing, and so
- 1:22:10Speaker 6: is Monster Lose It too. Like all these conventions, like
- 1:22:12Speaker 6: they just all incredible, you know, organizations and companies and
- 1:22:15Speaker 6: people and families.
- 1:22:16Speaker 5: You know, like yeah, and you know.
- 1:22:19Speaker 6: Uh so I get to I get to set up
- 1:22:22Speaker 6: and do my thing, you know. Yeah, those two are
- 1:22:24Speaker 6: always on my radar. Horror on Weekend is in March. Yeah,
- 1:22:30Speaker 6: it's always a blast. I try to do that one,
- 1:22:34Speaker 6: and uh, you know there's always one. This Mass Mini
- 1:22:37Speaker 6: con is great too. You know, it's more dialed into
- 1:22:40Speaker 6: like the poster uh scene. It's not a horror convention.
- 1:22:44Speaker 6: It's like pop culture and physical media. But it's like
- 1:22:47Speaker 6: more like the old Mondo con. It's like a movie
- 1:22:50Speaker 6: poster convention more or less. It's opened up to other things.
- 1:22:55Speaker 5: Uh but you know, uh, but again physical media and artwork, right,
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: like you know, hand hand drawn artwork. Yeah, you know, yeah,
- 1:23:04Speaker 5: so that kind of thing. So, but yeah, I mean
- 1:23:08Speaker 5: there's there's always so so many cons I want to try,
- 1:23:11Speaker 5: you know, there's there's there's a lot in the States
- 1:23:14Speaker 5: especially that i'd like to check out.
- 1:23:16Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, well the.
- 1:23:17Speaker 5: One you mentioned, there's Monster Mania's always on the kind
- 1:23:21Speaker 5: of kind of on the list to maybe check that
- 1:23:23Speaker 5: one out one days.
- 1:23:25Speaker 4: A lot of fun.
- 1:23:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it's so much fun. But I'll make sure they
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: have links blow to your website to obviously your platforms
- 1:23:32Speaker 3: as well, so that'll all be down below. I'm trying
- 1:23:36Speaker 3: to think of what else is uh, what else is
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: going on with us? We have Steve, what do we
- 1:23:41Speaker 3: have going on? We're doing? Uh yeah, yeah, we're gonna
- 1:23:46Speaker 3: talk about that from Celluloid Dreams. We're gonna be diving
- 1:23:49Speaker 3: into both of those commentary tracks for next week's episode.
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: And it's it's a movie that I'm I've watched I
- 1:23:59Speaker 3: think twice in the last week, and I have I
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: have some notes. So love that movie to death, but
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: it's like one of those movies that I'm so fascinated with.
- 1:24:10Speaker 3: I need to organize my thoughts more than I usually
- 1:24:13Speaker 3: do to make sure I sound cohesive and understandable.
- 1:24:17Speaker 5: To be honest, I haven't seen it, but it sounds
- 1:24:19Speaker 5: like a gallo. Yeah? Is it? Is it? Our gento?
- 1:24:25Speaker 5: Is it?
- 1:24:25Speaker 3: Uh?
- 1:24:27Speaker 5: Ba? Who did it? No?
- 1:24:28Speaker 3: It's what's his name? Uh? He did night Train murders?
- 1:24:34Speaker 3: And why am I blinking on the name?
- 1:24:37Speaker 5: Right?
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:24:40Speaker 5: Yeah? Okay?
- 1:24:41Speaker 3: You ever see you ever watch the Nightmares and Dreamscapes
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: show on T n T back in the day for
- 1:24:47Speaker 3: the Stephen King short stories.
- 1:24:51Speaker 6: I don't know if we I don't know, okay, just
- 1:24:55Speaker 6: being in Canada, I don't know if, like, uh, we
- 1:24:58Speaker 6: probably got it.
- 1:24:59Speaker 3: But he One of the stories that they that they
- 1:25:03Speaker 3: did for that TV show was a story called Autopsy,
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: and it's a story of a guy who's bit by
- 1:25:08Speaker 3: a snake on a golf course and the venom from
- 1:25:11Speaker 3: the snake lowers his blood pressure and his pulse to
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: a point where they think he's dead. And the entire
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: time we're hearing this inner monologue where he's basically about
- 1:25:20Speaker 3: to be cut open for an autopsy, and things keep
- 1:25:24Speaker 3: happening to distract and along the autopsy and I think
- 1:25:28Speaker 3: short Night of Glass Dolls is very much was very
- 1:25:32Speaker 3: much on the mind of somebody when constructing that story
- 1:25:35Speaker 3: because it has an incredibly similar presence running through it.
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: That's way too identical to be strictly coincidence, I think, so.
- 1:25:44Speaker 5: Yeah right, yeah, a lot of these new movies they
- 1:25:48Speaker 5: pull from old especially the old Italian there's still a
- 1:25:52Speaker 5: scare from like shock or something right.
- 1:25:54Speaker 4: Like yeah, yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about.
- 1:26:00Speaker 5: M but hey, you know it's uh imitation is the
