- 0:00If you do what you love, you'll never
- 0:02work a day in your life.
- 0:11Yeah, what?
- 0:12That, that's, that's a little crap.
- 0:16It is, it just is.
- 0:18Hey, this is Rae with Get Real Rae,
- 0:20a place and space for life and business
- 0:22tips from this creative soul to hopefully inspire
- 0:24you on your journey.
- 0:26Look at you, you're on a journey.
- 0:28Or at the very least, provide you with
- 0:29some laughs.
- 0:29And so, let's get real.
- 0:31Let's get real about the myth of being
- 0:36a solopreneur or an entrepreneur or a small
- 0:42business owner.
- 0:44Let's face it, work is work.
- 0:50I know, I know on the YouTubes, on
- 0:54the social media, everyone makes it look so
- 0:56glamorous.
- 0:57I'm an influencer.
- 0:59I'm on an airplane going to some tropical
- 1:02island.
- 1:04I'm going to work four days a week
- 1:06because that's what Tim Ferriss said.
- 1:09Or is it four hours?
- 1:11I'm going to work four hours, four hours,
- 1:13a four-hour work week.
- 1:15I think that's what it is.
- 1:17Okay, so you're, you're putting in a few
- 1:21hours and then you're chilling and you're relaxing
- 1:23and you've got your pomodoro method and life
- 1:28is good just like Drake.
- 1:30Well, you know, honestly, it's not quite like
- 1:36that.
- 1:36It's not quite that easy.
- 1:38So, I have been working for me for
- 1:45about 20 years.
- 1:46Now, let me clarify.
- 1:52Throughout that period, I've worked for other people.
- 1:55I have.
- 1:56When I first started my business, I had
- 1:59to have capital in order to open the
- 2:01business and I also wanted to have some
- 2:05runway to figure out.
- 2:06So, I know what it is that I
- 2:08want to create.
- 2:09I know what I want my business to
- 2:11do.
- 2:12Can I make money?
- 2:13Can I like actually make money?
- 2:15I mean, I've run all the numbers before
- 2:17I even started my business.
- 2:18Hey, guys, if you are looking to start
- 2:21a business, don't just be like, oh, I'm
- 2:23passionate about crocheting.
- 2:24Here's my Etsy shop.
- 2:26Like you have to run some numbers, baby
- 2:29doll.
- 2:30You have to figure out is there going
- 2:33to be an interest in what I'm selling?
- 2:37Case in point, I used to run a
- 2:40variety show and the host I thought was
- 2:44very talented.
- 2:46However, she started adding something to her act
- 2:50where I became less a fan of.
- 2:54And so, she would give out like a
- 2:57lemon and it was kind of funny because
- 2:59people were like, okay, I got this random
- 3:01lemon.
- 3:02But one day, she brought in a empty
- 3:07can like her recycling basically.
- 3:12And mind you, people paid to come see
- 3:14this show and her in character instead of,
- 3:19oh, look, I brought you a lemon.
- 3:22It's nutritious and delicious.
- 3:23She's like, oh, look, I brought you a
- 3:26can.
- 3:27And then found someone in the audience to
- 3:29give this can to.
- 3:30I think that was actually the last show
- 3:32I had her host for me.
- 3:34I was like, did she just bring in
- 3:36her garbage and give that away?
- 3:38I'm not understanding.
- 3:41And so, while she's an artist and she
- 3:46was trying something, maybe she was trying something
- 3:48new.
- 3:49Maybe she had used it in other acts
- 3:51and it worked just fine.
- 3:52Maybe she didn't have time to buy lemons.
- 3:54Maybe she wasn't thinking.
- 3:56Maybe she didn't care.
- 3:57Maybe she thought it would be hilarious.
- 3:58I don't really know.
- 4:00As the owner of that event, I do
- 4:05feel like that kind of changed.
- 4:08Like, hey, is it cool if I give
- 4:10away my recycling on stage at this event
- 4:13where people pay?
- 4:14I kind of feel like I would have
- 4:15liked to have had a heads up.
- 4:17But I also understand that, you know, if
- 4:19you are an artist, a comedian, you're not
- 4:24always going to think to run by changes
- 4:28to your act.
- 4:28You've been hired to bring in your act
- 4:31and you're not going to think, well, I
- 4:33should probably check with somebody to see if
- 4:35they don't mind a change to my act.
- 4:38So there you go.
- 4:40Point being, there was no demand on my
- 4:44side for that cam.
- 4:47And so, if you love crocheting little fuzzy
- 4:55warmers for a video game controller and you
- 5:01think this is going to be the next
- 5:03big thing because you could have your video
- 5:05game controller look like a little Pokemon face
- 5:07with crochet Pokemon thing.
- 5:10Is there a big demand for that?
- 5:11Probably not.
- 5:13If you were the person who's going to
- 5:15take this idea and make lots of money,
- 5:18give me some credit.
- 5:19You ain't got to give me any money.
- 5:21Just give me some credit.
- 5:22Like, I was checking out Get Real Ray
- 5:24and she said, you know, I could go
- 5:26ahead and try to make some money off
- 5:29of these little video game warmers.
- 5:32But yeah, think about the number, think about
- 5:36who's playing video games.
- 5:38Okay, the majority of video game players, do
- 5:42most of them have an issue with finding
- 5:46their handheld device, right?
- 5:53Why would they need your crocheted Pokemon thing?
- 5:59Like, why?
- 6:00Other than because it's cute.
- 6:03So, you're starting that business.
- 6:06Other than just thinking, because I'm passionate about
- 6:09it.
- 6:09Because I can.
- 6:11Ask yourself, is there an interest?
- 6:14Is there a demand?
- 6:16One way to start that out is just
- 6:18to ask amongst friends, family.
- 6:22If you are a social media person, go
- 6:24on social media.
- 6:25Hey, you guys, I made this cute little
- 6:27Pokemon thing for myself.
- 6:29What do you think?
- 6:30Would you want one too?
- 6:32Put up a poll.
- 6:33Now, when it comes to friends and family,
- 6:35a lot of times, especially if your parents
- 6:37are involved, they'll be like, of course, yeah,
- 6:39I want that.
- 6:40So, also, figure out, am I actually asking
- 6:43people in my ideal customer zone, your target
- 6:49market, your ideal audience?
- 6:52A lot of people will call this your
- 6:55ideal avatar, your customer avatar.
- 6:58I hate this whole avatar speech.
- 7:02So, I don't like to use it.
- 7:03But, case in point, if the person who
- 7:09you want to sell to is not like
- 7:13you and not like the people you consider
- 7:16your friends and family, then while their feedback
- 7:20is beneficial, right?
- 7:23They might know somebody who would want a
- 7:25Pokemon crochet thing for their handheld device.
- 7:36Chances are, if they're not the ones who
- 7:37are going to buy it, you know, you
- 7:39got to take their feedback with a little,
- 7:41I don't want to say a grain of
- 7:42salt, but don't put it as high up
- 7:44as someone that you know is an absolute
- 7:46gamer, wears Pokemon onesies all the time, right?
- 7:52That person, if they're like, dude, yeah, I
- 7:54would buy that.
- 7:55Actually, can I buy one right now?
- 7:57That's the kind of person where you're like,
- 7:59yes, I'm going to put more weight on
- 8:02your feedback than from someone who I know
- 8:06does not play video games at all.
- 8:10Additionally, just because you've run the numbers and
- 8:16maybe you had immense success in one area,
- 8:21you're, okay, we got to stop talking about
- 8:24this Pokemon game warmer things because I can't
- 8:28even figure out what to call the stupid
- 8:30handheld part where you play the game.
- 8:33I haven't played video games in a very
- 8:34long time.
- 8:35Duck Hunt, that was a lot of fun.
- 8:37Come here, doggie.
- 8:39So with all that being said, when I
- 8:47started, it took a few years to actually
- 8:51make money.
- 8:53And if you're a US-based business, the
- 8:55US government does say pretty much you got
- 8:58a few years before you better start making
- 9:00some money because otherwise this is a hobby,
- 9:02okay?
- 9:03I think the mark is five years.
- 9:05I don't know if that's still the case,
- 9:06but that's when I first started out.
- 9:10Okay.
- 9:10So the first few years, you're taking some
- 9:14losses.
- 9:14You're learning.
- 9:15You're learning what's working, what's not working.
- 9:20You're figuring out your avenues of marketing.
- 9:23All this is dandy.
- 9:25And maybe you're making some money.
- 9:27I remember I enjoyed producing a poetry show,
- 9:33but it wasn't making any money.
- 9:36And so ultimately I had to stop producing
- 9:39it because there were just too many days
- 9:41where we were losing.
- 9:43Why were we losing?
- 9:44Well, as much as people liked poetry, the
- 9:47popular thing was slam.
- 9:49I didn't want slam.
- 9:51And so the number of people who wanted
- 9:53just poetry was very small.
- 9:56And oftentimes the audience would be filled with
- 10:00poets who wanted to have a chance to
- 10:05perform at the next show.
- 10:07So they weren't going to be a regular
- 10:09audience.
- 10:09They just wanted for someone else to hear
- 10:11their poetry.
- 10:12So not a viable business.
- 10:16Great for like a once a year event,
- 10:19but definitely not for a monthly event.
- 10:22I transitioned to theater and dance and theater
- 10:27is a lot more costly.
- 10:30You need to have regular rehearsals.
- 10:34So even though I was passionate about theater,
- 10:36the prospect of making a full-time income
- 10:40from theater was just not happening for me.
- 10:44As a creator of theater shows.
- 10:49So yeah, passion is great, but I think
- 10:53it's important to remember that even in this
- 10:56AI age with all this technology, that just
- 10:59being passionate about something and running your basic
- 11:03numbers is not going to be enough to
- 11:05ensure a sustainable and viable business.
- 11:10Over the years, we talk about how you
- 11:16build it, they will come.
- 11:18And if you're passionate, then you'll never work
- 11:20a day, but work is work.
- 11:22And over the years, it's important to realize
- 11:26that you're going to be working.
- 11:29You're going to be making changes to your
- 11:32business.
- 11:33Maybe you are going to make a change
- 11:34to your business where you cut it down
- 11:36to you're only involved in your business four
- 11:39days a week, or maybe you cut it
- 11:40down to you're only involved in your business
- 11:42four hours a week.
- 11:46And when we talk about using AI and
- 11:52individuals overseas, my brain is forgetting what we
- 11:59call them.
- 12:00Contractors who are in foreign countries and are
- 12:04able to work for a lot less than
- 12:07a US worker.
- 12:09Yeah, it all looks and sounds really good
- 12:12on paper.
- 12:13And this is advice that a lot of
- 12:14people give like, oh, okay, so you need
- 12:17to get all this stuff done.
- 12:19Well, spend a month setting up your website
- 12:25with your zaps to connect to your email
- 12:28list and then hire an assistant through okay.
- 12:35Oh, what was that site?
- 12:36I want to say okay recruiter, but that's
- 12:38not what it is.
- 12:39But hire an assistant that's in the Philippines
- 12:43and you're in the US and just give
- 12:46them the work to do in terms of
- 12:49how to answer your emails, set up your
- 12:52chat box, set up your auto responses, and
- 12:55then just check in once a week to
- 12:56make sure everything's good.
- 12:58A lot of people who have created videos,
- 13:04sold books on those ideas, ask yourself, are
- 13:08those people still in this very moment running
- 13:14their businesses like that?
- 13:16When they created that video, wrote that book,
- 13:20were they still implementing those systems that they
- 13:26are?
- 13:27This dog is just staring at my face.
- 13:29It's making me nervous.
- 13:32Implementing those systems that they are promoting.
- 13:37So oftentimes, journalists, authors do research, right?
- 13:45We want to do research to test this
- 13:46theory.
- 13:47We're going to test it.
- 13:48We tested it.
- 13:49Now we're going to sit down and write
- 13:51the thing and then we're going to have
- 13:52to spend time promoting the thing.
- 13:54But many times, promoting the thing is not
- 13:58just one person doing it, okay?
- 14:01You wrote the book or you created the
- 14:04YouTube video.
- 14:06Now, you're going to have to spend time
- 14:09creating promotional content, marketing content.
- 14:14Yes, you can use this app to go
- 14:15ahead and create those videos really quickly and
- 14:19create those short viral clips really quickly.
- 14:22That's great.
- 14:24But the content still has to be put
- 14:25in.
- 14:26Maybe your assistant is doing it, but you
- 14:28would have had to have spent time to
- 14:29find a good assistant that's not going to
- 14:31mess things up.
- 14:33Okay, maybe this good assistant has been with
- 14:35you for a while.
- 14:36You've got all the systems in place.
- 14:38The assistant says, I've got your video.
- 14:40I've got your book.
- 14:42I'm going to go ahead and execute the
- 14:45system that we created together.
- 14:48The system this time, I'm meaning the actual
- 14:51order of how you want things to be
- 14:54done, the instructions.
- 14:57And you say, yes, go for it.
- 14:59And they implement it.
- 15:01You still got to put your time into
- 15:03getting the interviews.
- 15:05Maybe you have a manager or agent who's
- 15:07helping you get interviews, or maybe you have
- 15:13someone who is helping market your product, your
- 15:17business, your service.
- 15:18Point being, the idea of achieving things on
- 15:23a large scale, just being one person who
- 15:28has put in a system once, and it's
- 15:33going to suddenly bring you lots of money,
- 15:35solve all your problems, blow everything up, it's
- 15:37just not realistic.
- 15:38It's just not.
- 15:39It's not.
- 15:42It's always more than one person.
- 15:45Even as a solopreneur, you still have businesses
- 15:50you rely on to keep your website up.
- 15:54Or maybe you've got someone who does your
- 15:57taxes for you.
- 15:59Maybe you are relying on someone to help
- 16:04you with your social media.
- 16:07It's not really a party of one.
- 16:12And you might be saying, but Ray, I
- 16:14do my taxes myself, so do I.
- 16:16I do my marketing myself, so do I.
- 16:19And I do my website myself, so do
- 16:22I.
- 16:24But do you actually have your own posting
- 16:26platform?
- 16:27Maybe you have your own server in your
- 16:28basement.
- 16:29Good on you, boo.
- 16:32But you're not cranking out your own electricity.
- 16:37So at some point, you are relying on
- 16:39others.
- 16:40Why do I say all this?
- 16:42I think it's really easy to start a
- 16:45business being very optimistic, and it's important to
- 16:49be optimistic if you're going to start a
- 16:50business.
- 16:51But it's easy to start not just being
- 16:54optimistic, but with this belief that because you
- 16:59have started, because you have decided you're going
- 17:03to do this, that once you reach a
- 17:07certain goal, once you have that perfect system
- 17:11in place, then everything else is smooth sailing.
- 17:14If you've ever talked to anybody who does
- 17:17sailing, then they can tell you, yeah, there's
- 17:21going to be days where it's great on
- 17:23the water.
- 17:23There's also going to be moments when the
- 17:25wind kicks up a little bit, and you're
- 17:29like, man, I wasn't expecting that.
- 17:31I did look at the weather, but this
- 17:33isn't quite what I was preparing to deal
- 17:36with.
- 17:37There's going to be times when the water's
- 17:39a little choppy, or maybe there's something going
- 17:42on below the surface of the water that
- 17:44you could not have anticipated and accounted for,
- 17:47despite the fact that you were tracking the
- 17:49season of which animals will be coming through
- 17:51your way.
- 17:54As someone who has been in business for
- 17:5920 years, and have had multiple businesses, and
- 18:03has worked for many people, and has had
- 18:06periods where business is not making any money
- 18:10or enough money to sustain me, thinking I'm
- 18:12going to go out of business, having to
- 18:15figure out, oh my gosh, what else can
- 18:18I do, or sell, or how else can
- 18:21I market this in order to survive?
- 18:25I can tell you with all honesty that
- 18:30it's always going to be work.
- 18:34Just because you work for yourself does not
- 18:37mean it's not work.
- 18:41Work is work.
- 18:42Sorry.
- 18:44I know.
- 18:44I know.
- 18:45I came.
- 18:46I saw your bubble.
- 18:47I took a pan.
- 18:48I popped your bubble.
- 18:49But work is work, and that doesn't have
- 18:53to be a bad thing.
- 18:54So instead of crying and being like, Ray,
- 18:58you just ruined my day.
- 18:59Now I'm not gonna go start my business.
- 19:01No.
- 19:03Or maybe you are someone who has a
- 19:06business already.
- 19:07You're like, Ray, I've been in business 30
- 19:09years.
- 19:10I was hoping you was gonna tell me
- 19:11it was gonna get easier, girl.
- 19:13But man, I might as well give up.
- 19:16Instead of giving up, accept that work is
- 19:19work.
- 19:20And then ask yourself, what are you willing
- 19:27to tolerate?
- 19:28What are you not willing to tolerate?
- 19:29We've already talked in other videos about knowing
- 19:31your wants.
- 19:33And just figure out what is okay with
- 19:39you for work.
- 19:42What's okay?
- 19:43Okay.
- 19:44So I teach a lot of different subjects
- 19:51online, and that's one of my businesses to
- 19:55help the other businesses stay afloat.
- 19:57Because I decided for myself that I really
- 20:00don't want to go back to working for
- 20:03somebody else.
- 20:05Yes, working for somebody else would bring me
- 20:07a lot more money, and that would be
- 20:10great.
- 20:12But I've just decided I've reached a point
- 20:14where I'm not interested in doing it.
- 20:18And so if not working for someone else
- 20:20means that I don't get to go out
- 20:27to nice restaurants once a month, or even
- 20:32twice a month, and that I don't get
- 20:38to keep up with my French tutor for
- 20:44private lessons, and that my list of things
- 20:49that I want to enjoy, like private Pilates
- 20:53lessons, or gosh, I'm trying to think of
- 20:59something that's not a private lesson, or having
- 21:02a new fancy fancy Apple Watch or Fitbit.
- 21:08Not working for someone else means that I
- 21:10can't have these other things.
- 21:13I can't take a family member on a
- 21:17cruise or just on a nice vacation to
- 21:21another country right now.
- 21:23I have to accept that because of the
- 21:30work I have chosen, I've chosen the work
- 21:34that I'm doing.
- 21:35I'm willing to do that work.
- 21:37That work is work, and I'm going to
- 21:41be okay with presently.
- 21:44That work is not allowing me to do
- 21:48all these other things that I want to
- 21:50do.
- 21:51Think of the bodybuilder.
- 21:53The bodybuilder might want to eat the chocolate
- 21:58cake, the donut, the cupcake, the cookies, mom's
- 22:02home cooking, but the bodybuilder also knows there's
- 22:06a competition coming up.
- 22:08And so they have to prioritize, what is
- 22:13it that, you know what I say, what
- 22:15is it that you really want?
- 22:16But what is it that I'm okay with
- 22:19putting in the work for right now?
- 22:22Well, I know in order to do this
- 22:24competition and have a chance of winning, I'm
- 22:27not going to eat the things that I
- 22:29really, really, really want.
- 22:31And those things, they're not off the table
- 22:33forever.
- 22:35They're just not on the plate for right
- 22:38now.
- 22:39And that's okay, because I've decided that the
- 22:43work I really value is eating this plain
- 22:48chicken and this small amount of broccoli so
- 22:52I can go kill it at that competition.
- 22:55All right.
- 22:56So what have we learned?
- 22:58We've learned that work doesn't have to be
- 23:02a bad thing.
- 23:04Reframe how you think about work.
- 23:07If you grew up thinking work is that
- 23:11difficult thing that you do and you're living
- 23:13for the weekend, figure out how you can
- 23:16think of work as that thing you do
- 23:21that allows you to do so many other
- 23:26things.
- 23:27But so many other things should not be
- 23:29defined as working less.
- 23:33That's the problem with the four-hour work
- 23:36week and the having virtual assistants to do
- 23:39everything and using Python and AI and Zaps
- 23:45and all of these various tech hacks and
- 23:50optimization in order to, in theory, free up
- 23:56your time.
- 23:59Except that things are going to change.
- 24:02They'll keep changing.
- 24:04Your body's always changing.
- 24:06Life is constant change.
- 24:08If your business is not changing, it's dead
- 24:12or will be very soon, right?
- 24:15So maybe that change is just getting your
- 24:17new customers.
- 24:19Maybe that change is new eyeballs on your
- 24:23business.
- 24:24But change is natural, normal, inevitable, and we
- 24:28need change.
- 24:30We need change.
- 24:32Same way, we need fulfillment in work.
- 24:37Now, if you are someone watching this and
- 24:41you're like, Rae, I go out to that
- 24:44field.
- 24:45I pick the berries from the field.
- 24:50I give them to the supervisor.
- 24:54I get my piddly little pay.
- 24:55There is zero fulfillment in that.
- 24:58I know that's work.
- 25:00Work is work, girl.
- 25:01You ain't told me nothing I don't know.
- 25:03I hear you.
- 25:05Know that I've also done types of work
- 25:08that I'm like, oh, my goodness.
- 25:11Is there freedom from this?
- 25:15But I found a path for freedom from
- 25:18a lot of types of work I was
- 25:20just not enjoying.
- 25:22At the time, I needed to feed myself.
- 25:24I needed to take care of friends or
- 25:27family.
- 25:28These things were priorities.
- 25:31But over time, I was able to rework
- 25:35things so that I had fewer obligations to
- 25:40others and I could then prioritize transitioning towards
- 25:46work that would allow for me to feel
- 25:48fulfilled.
- 25:49So if you are watching this, either wishing,
- 25:55hoping, praying for the day where you can
- 25:56start your own business, wishing, hoping, praying for
- 25:59the day where you don't have to work
- 26:00for anybody else, wishing, hoping, praying for the
- 26:02day when your business will make tons of
- 26:04money and then you can sell it every
- 26:06time, wishing, hoping, praying for the day where
- 26:09things will just be different than what they
- 26:11are now, I encourage you to take a
- 26:14moment to figure out how can you work
- 26:19with what is happening now in your life
- 26:22and then make a plan for what things
- 26:26will look like in one year than six
- 26:28months.
- 26:31So if in six months, within a six
- 26:37-month period, you can save up enough money
- 26:39where maybe you can invest in a course
- 26:43that would allow you to interview for a
- 26:49job where you don't have to pick the
- 26:53berries anymore, start saving, right?
- 26:58Maybe that means you've got to take on
- 27:01extra work or maybe that means working overtime.
- 27:06Maybe that means not buying certain things from
- 27:14the store or maybe that means telling friends
- 27:18and family, hey, guess what?
- 27:20Let's go spend time at the park because
- 27:22it's good weather instead of that weekly trip
- 27:27to McDonald's or the once a month, whatever.
- 27:34I just bought some nail polish the other
- 27:36day and I was like, wow, I haven't
- 27:39purchased nail polish in a really long time.
- 27:42I like how my nails feel when I've
- 27:45done my nails, but it was a sacrifice.
- 27:49I just had to put it to the
- 27:51side for a bit so I can focus
- 27:53on taking that little bit of extra money
- 27:57and putting it towards a bill, right?
- 28:02So I think these get the points.
- 28:06Yes, I hope so.
- 28:08Follow your dreams, my friends.
- 28:11Follow your dreams, but know that your dreams
- 28:14do not have to be a nightmare and
- 28:15that if you're feeling like, man, this is
- 28:17still rough or this hasn't gotten easier, will
- 28:19it ever get easier?
- 28:21Yes, it will get easier and it will
- 28:23get harder and it's always going to be
- 28:24easy and it's always going to be hard
- 28:26and it's always going to be changing and
- 28:28that's work, but guess what?
- 28:30That's life.
- 28:31So don't believe the hype because you know
- 28:35your girl be telling you, she be telling
- 28:37you the truth.
- 28:39Alright, my friends, until next time, peace.
