- 0:01Oh, what a goal by Peter Taylor.
- 0:20Hi there.
- 0:20Welcome to team of the 80s.
- 0:21My name is Gary Spencer.
- 0:23Thank you for tuning in.
- 0:24Before we go any further this week, please take the time to like and subscribe.
- 0:28I really do appreciate your comments and your opinions and then that just helps me look for things that we can talk about which we're going to get involved in.
- 0:38So really appreciate that.
- 0:39Okay, on with this week's show.
- 0:41I didn't really say much after the Nottingham Forest game.
- 0:44I felt that we were very lucky, let's be honest.
- 0:46Forest battered us in the first half and we got away with it.
- 0:50We got three points.
- 0:51And quite honestly, that's all I'm really interested in right now in the Premier League, just to get the points tonight, of course, we come unstuck against Leon and it's no more than I expected.
- 1:02If you're following this show, I've said all along that Europa League would be a big push for us this year.
- 1:07It'd be very tough for us to do well in that and win that cup like we did the conference.
- 1:11It's a completely different set of demands, completely different standard, and we're gonna have to go a long way to do anything in, in that cup at all.
- 1:22Back to the league, though.
- 1:25The Nottingham Forest game.
- 1:26Yeah, I mean, it could have been six, three to Forest, right?
- 1:29I mean, our defense was again, dreadful.
- 1:31We've really got to tighten up on the defense and our attacking.
- 1:36Well, I mean, we're scoring goals.
- 1:38I don't know how we're scoring goals.
- 1:39We are, but every game we're going to need five or six to get out of the game because our defending is so bad.
- 1:47And you know, I hear opinions, you know, the fans, oh, blame the board, blame the international break, blame the referee, all the blame.
- 1:59Yeah, I get it.
- 2:01But Sarge now is at the team for a while and we haven't sorted out the defense one iota, not one bit have we sorted out that defense.
- 2:10It has to be better.
- 2:11And you know what?
- 2:13We're not going to get any players in in January.
- 2:15We're just not.
- 2:16Look at who we got in in the summer.
- 2:18So we have to play a system which suits the players we've got.
- 2:21That's what management is.
- 2:23I know I've been banging on all the time about Sarge and how I don't want him to succeed.
- 2:28It's not that I don't feel he can succeed.
- 2:31I don't feel he can succeed.
- 2:33For me, started out, he.
- 2:36I don't know if he even if he knows his best defenders.
- 2:40And I felt he should have dropped Walton.
- 2:42I think he should have dropped Walton and he's made him skipper.
- 2:46I just feel that we are really struggling in all departments and I don't know, after the Brighton game, God knows what's going to happen against Brighton.
- 2:57I mean, I just hope we get out of that town without being completely embarrassed, because right now, a team like Brighton are gonna run right with us.
- 3:07They're really going to have a field day.
- 3:09So let's hope we do.
- 3:13I don't know, we.
- 3:14We have a miraculous recovery for Brighton and we get away from it.
- 3:18But we needed.
- 3:19We need a different manager in there.
- 3:20We just do.
- 3:21We need a more defensively minded manager.
- 3:24We need to.
- 3:25First of all, before we start thinking about winning and going forward, we need to learn how to keep the point and try and find a clean sheet.
- 3:34That's the first thing we need to be doing.
- 3:37So, Sarge, for me, he's got to go.
- 3:39He's got to go.
- 3:39Like Paris said that he was on high alert.
- 3:43I think Parish said that deliberately.
- 3:44And.
- 3:45And Sarge has got to go.
- 3:48The Brighton game.
- 3:49Okay, so the Brighton rivalry goes back a long, long time.
- 3:52I think it started when I first started going to palace, to be honest with you.
- 3:56And I interviewed Phil Alder last week.
- 3:58Phil's going to be on the show in around Christmas time.
- 4:02But I was chatting to Phil and he said to me that he felt the rivalry first started with him and Brian Horton.
- 4:09This is what Phil had to say.
- 4:11Yeah.
- 4:11You know, those battles with Brighton all come about through me.
- 4:16Yeah, me and Brian Orton, we used to.
- 4:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:20Kick the living daylights out of Stevie permanent.
- 4:24Saw Brian Alton do a function in the Midlands two or three years ago and my name popped up.
- 4:32He was absolutely shocked and aghast that Steve was.
- 4:39I was his best pal.
- 4:41He said, I hate him.
- 4:43I hate.
- 4:46You know, and he knew I hated him.
- 4:48You know, we had great battles, as we did with Brighton.
- 4:53That interview is absolutely brilliant.
- 4:55So please tune in and watch the whole of that interview, Phil.
- 4:58Phil's got some fabulous stories and don't forget he had a really good career as a manager.
- 5:03So the Phil Older show's coming up.
- 5:05I've also interviewed Neil Everett and Neil has been going home and away since I've known him.
- 5:11I've known Neil since I was 13 years old.
- 5:13And forget about being a great photographer.
- 5:16What a Palace fan is.
- 5:18He's so devoted.
- 5:19Last year, I think he went to 89 games.
- 5:21So Neil shared his Story with me and it was very, very good.
- 5:26I don't know about you, but I'm sick of Man City, right?
- 5:28I mean, I'm sick of hearing about them, okay, we know that they've done wrong, we know their cheats, but let's just find the punishment and move on.
- 5:37But to listen to the sports shows every single day and it to be Man City from start to end, I'm over it already, right?
- 5:44Let's punish them, let's move on.
- 5:47It's ridiculous.
- 5:48I mean, there must be more content out there.
- 5:50The Man City right now mentioned earlier about Wharton.
- 5:54Yeah, he's still not even tonight against Leon where we did look particularly bad again in the first half and in the second half we weren't much better.
- 6:04Yeah, he did very well.
- 6:05I felt for the goal, Walton, but apart from that, his touch again was off.
- 6:09He's just off and he keeps getting played and oh man, he's a, he's a hard watch for me right now.
- 6:16Wharton, he really is deep.
- 6:17Did any of you listen to or watch the Emmanuel Petit conversation on Talk Sport the other day where he was talking about the disparity and how it's changed between the fans and the players and how he doesn't get
- 6:31any support these days from Arsenal?
- 6:33I found that conversation really, really interesting only because I've spoken to Andy Gray lately as you, you may or may not have heard that interview.
- 6:42Phil Oda, a lot of the ex palace boys, the, the.
- 6:46They also said that they get no support these days from Crystal palace.
- 6:49And it seems to me that just doesn't go on at Crystal Palace.
- 6:52It seems to me that even the bigger clubs, even someone like Emmanuel Petit, who was one of the Invincibles, I think, I think he was, he certainly won a championship with them.
- 7:04He doesn't get any love either.
- 7:06So that, that's a shame that the, the clubs are moving away from past players.
- 7:11They should, they should embrace the history.
- 7:14Because like I said to you, when you go onto YouTube and look at YouTube programs and you look at everything, that is when you learn about the teams and you learn about the clubs and you learn about the
- 7:26players and you know, quite honestly, the past players are like ongoing PR for that.
- 7:32If you look at the Liverpool palace game, for instance, where Andy scores that goal, that is constant PR and it's just successful through YouTube.
- 7:39So just look after, look after your ex players.
- 7:42And also I was very happy.
- 7:44I mean, I wasn't Glasner's biggest fan, everybody knows that.
- 7:47But I do feel that he turned it around for the club and in the end he did very, very well for the club.
- 7:53I felt that it was great that the reception he got the other day when we played, it didn't surprise me that the palace fans did that for him.
- 8:01I know the majority do love and appreciate what he did.
- 8:06I felt a little bit weird that some of the palace fans were going overboard about Glassner's thoughts after the game.
- 8:14I mean, what else is he going to say?
- 8:16I mean it doesn't, it, it doesn't cost him, it's just not going to hurt him at all to be complimentary about palace and the fans, etc.
- 8:24Etc.
- 8:24But overall I thought it was very nice how we treated him on Sunday.
- 8:30Looking for, looking forward ahead to the rest of the year.
- 8:34I've got Dave Lewis on who is he wrote a book called the Real Story of the team of the 80s.
- 8:41Like I said, Neil Everett's coming up.
- 8:42He's got, he's going to be sharing his photographs with us and talking about a new book that he's got coming out next year.
- 8:48And of course the brilliant Phil Holder who's got some great stories about, as we've just seen, about the rivalry with Brighton.
- 8:57I'm going to leave you now.
- 8:58I'll speak to you soon and I'm going to leave you with something that Neil Everett said to me just the other day.
- 9:04If you said to me we'll win a European trophy, I'd have laughed like a drain.
- 9:09You go, that's just absurd.
- 9:11That to me was the pinnacle was, was winning that.
- 9:15I said to many there that, you know, this is, this is the end of the story.
- 9:19This is the end of the book.
- 9:21This is, this is where I check.
- 9:24Out probably let's not fall to Bright.
- 9:37That.
