Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Derrek.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Well, it's another week, which means guess what it's time
- 0:10Speaker 2: for Terminello's take, Lou. We kind of go all over
- 0:12Speaker 2: the whether it's a Friday, Thursday, Tuesday, Monday, we just
- 0:16Speaker 2: we find it's time to have a hangout here on
- 0:18Speaker 2: the podcast, don't we.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Doesn't matter which day the week it is, Alex, I'm
- 0:23Speaker 3: always ready to talk sports with my buddy.
- 0:25Speaker 2: But this one's an important day because actually, you know,
- 0:28Speaker 2: Dallas and the Giants made prime video kind of history
- 0:33Speaker 2: with the breaking of the streaming service records. I think
- 0:36Speaker 2: tonight the Lions and the and the packerd are so important.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I want to get this out before that game because
- 0:42Speaker 2: the Lions are the real deal. They're not under the radar,
- 0:44Speaker 2: as you've said week after week, and now they get
- 0:47Speaker 2: the primetime treatment and I think they're worthy of it tonight.
- 0:50Speaker 2: And and by the way, the allure of the NFC
- 0:52Speaker 2: North matchups always get to me, as as is the
- 0:55Speaker 2: NFC AFC North.
- 0:56Speaker 3: By the way, I agree. I mean, I think this
- 1:00Speaker 3: is a big game. Obviously. I think Detroit's in good shape.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Detroit's been banged up, They've lost defensive starters, but they've
- 1:08Speaker 3: been able to overcome it. Aaron Glenn has done a
- 1:11Speaker 3: great job. They have two great off They have two
- 1:13Speaker 3: great coordinators, offensive coordinator in Ben Johnson and the great
- 1:18Speaker 3: defensive coordinator in Aaron Glenn. And you know, coach Campbell
- 1:23Speaker 3: knows how to utilize his coordinators and put them in control.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Detroit's very good. They've been able to overcome injuries. They're
- 1:32Speaker 3: very dangerous at home. I like them tonight Tonight's game,
- 1:38Speaker 3: I do It should be a good game. Green Bay
- 1:40Speaker 3: is obviously going to unless they have a major collapse.
- 1:45Speaker 3: They're going to be a playoff team, and they have
- 1:48Speaker 3: a good roster. But I like to I do like
- 1:51Speaker 3: if I hate to pick games, but if I'm picking,
- 1:54Speaker 3: I'm picking Detroit tonight. But it should be a heck
- 1:57Speaker 3: of a game, a heck of a Thursday night game,
- 2:00Speaker 3: and Al Michaels and Kirk kirk Street will have another
- 2:03Speaker 3: good game to call. By the way, they are a
- 2:04Speaker 3: great team. Michael's on Herb Street, just getting away from
- 2:08Speaker 3: football on the field and talking about as you know.
- 2:12Speaker 2: I grew up listening to Kirk on the college football scene,
- 2:15Speaker 2: which he still does Saturdays, but his edit bel talk
- 2:18Speaker 2: is just as good. I agree there, and he's got
- 2:20Speaker 2: he's got his Golden Retriever Pete. Obviously, his other Golden
- 2:23Speaker 2: Retriever passed away, but it's nice to see that he
- 2:26Speaker 2: keeps in the family of Golden Retrievers on the field.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Looks like the dead Dogs having a lot of fun
- 2:32Speaker 2: in memory of his brother Ben. Anyway, it's it's gonna
- 2:36Speaker 2: be fun. And I think after they came back against
- 2:38Speaker 2: the Niners, the Lions realized they can come back from anything.
- 2:41Speaker 2: That's kind of the culture. I feal with this Lions team.
- 2:43Speaker 2: So we'll have to see.
- 2:45Speaker 3: They have a great chance to win it all. This
- 2:48Speaker 3: is their best chance in their history to go to
- 2:52Speaker 3: the Super Bowl, to win the Super Bowl. We've talked
- 2:55Speaker 3: about Doff. He's underrated. He can make every throw, have
- 3:00Speaker 3: a balanced offense. I really like the Detroit Lions team.
- 3:04Speaker 2: But let's go to some other burning topics. I know
- 3:07Speaker 2: you want to talk about. Firstly, firstly, the loss of
- 3:14Speaker 2: lou Carnaseca. We have to get to that because they're
- 3:16Speaker 2: doing the funeral tomorrow on the campus of Saint John's
- 3:19Speaker 2: and my memory of meeting him, and then the realization
- 3:23Speaker 2: that this tenth grader, Alex Garrett want to be a
- 3:26Speaker 2: Saint John's kid forever.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Right.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I love Queen's College, but I always had that dream
- 3:30Speaker 2: of being at Saint John's. Maybe lou was a reason
- 3:33Speaker 2: because look at the culture he's created on campus that
- 3:37Speaker 2: extends to this day.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Am I right in that?
- 3:40Speaker 3: Alex? You're one hundred percent right in that? And that
- 3:43Speaker 3: not only goes for Saint Louis and Saint John's. That's
- 3:47Speaker 3: in a lot of college situations where people gravitate emotionally
- 3:52Speaker 3: towards that school and want to go to that school
- 3:54Speaker 3: or want to support that school if their past college
- 3:57Speaker 3: age is because of the coach the success of the school.
- 4:02Speaker 3: You go back to nineteen eighty four when Doug Flutie
- 4:04Speaker 3: won the Heisman Trophy at Boston College, Admission applications to
- 4:10Speaker 3: to Boston College went through roof same thing. When Clemson
- 4:14Speaker 3: was going to the finals of the of the NCAA
- 4:18Speaker 3: in football two or three years in a row, their
- 4:22Speaker 3: admissions went up. So your attachment is that's real, that's
- 4:27Speaker 3: not fake, it's real. And you know, Louis Connessec was
- 4:31Speaker 3: a very lovable guy. He was a regular guy. He
- 4:33Speaker 3: was a son of immigrants who you know, and he
- 4:36Speaker 3: worked his way to become the greatest coach in Saint
- 4:41Speaker 3: John's his street guess along with with lap Chick. But
- 4:45Speaker 3: you know he won five hundred and twenty six games.
- 4:48Speaker 3: They went to the Final four with a great, great
- 4:51Speaker 3: team with Chris Smullen and Walter Berry and Mark Mogus
- 4:54Speaker 3: was the point guard. A lot of people don't realize
- 4:56Speaker 3: that there was another point guard on that team who
- 4:59Speaker 3: was only in the soft more year, Mark Moore. Moses
- 5:02Speaker 3: was in his senior year in Mark Jackson who would
- 5:04Speaker 3: end up having a great college and NBA career. That
- 5:08Speaker 3: was a heck of a team. Bill Winnington was their center.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Some of these guys went on, I mean Mullen and
- 5:15Speaker 2: this was cool of meeting him while Mullen was coaching.
- 5:18Speaker 1: That was pretty special.
- 5:19Speaker 2: When I got to ask Lou about watching his protege
- 5:21Speaker 2: coach the team that he coached to the five hundred
- 5:24Speaker 2: and twenty six wins. But Mark Jackson, when you hear
- 5:26Speaker 2: these guys on the telecast, can you tell the impact
- 5:29Speaker 2: loom made? I feel like you can, right, yes.
- 5:33Speaker 3: For sure. Rick Patino was interviewed the other day somewhere
- 5:38Speaker 3: I didn't hear it, but I read the transcript and
- 5:43Speaker 3: he said a lot of college coaches. People don't like
- 5:47Speaker 3: every college coach, like Patino says, not everybody likes me.
- 5:50Speaker 3: But he said, nobody ever said a bad word about
- 5:54Speaker 3: Louis Connesseca, and that's something to be said for that.
- 5:59Speaker 3: And he was a terrific coach, Hall of Fame coach,
- 6:04Speaker 3: three time Big East Coach of the Year, took his
- 6:06Speaker 3: team to the Final four. Ironically, he did not want
- 6:10Speaker 3: to join the Big East. He did not want Saint
- 6:12Speaker 3: John's to join the Big East when they formed in
- 6:15Speaker 3: nineteen seventy nine, nineteen eighty and he says, we play
- 6:19Speaker 3: those teams anyway, Why do we have to form a conference.
- 6:22Speaker 3: He was not for that, And they had to do
- 6:25Speaker 3: a lot of arm twisting to get Saint John's to
- 6:28Speaker 3: join or they who knows where they would have been today,
- 6:33Speaker 3: but they didn't want to join. And another another school
- 6:37Speaker 3: that was asked to join and didn't join, and it
- 6:41Speaker 3: now plays in the Patriot League, holy Cross. You wonder
- 6:45Speaker 3: if holy Cross had joined, how where their basketball fortunes
- 6:49Speaker 3: would be today, because they were pretty good and they
- 6:51Speaker 3: would go into the NCAA's just about every year in
- 6:53Speaker 3: the early eighties, at least the first couple of years
- 6:55Speaker 3: of the eighties. But the best thing that ever happened
- 6:58Speaker 3: to Saint John's was that for them to join the
- 7:01Speaker 3: Big East, and the Big East went from a brand
- 7:05Speaker 3: new conference in seventy nine eighty within four or five
- 7:08Speaker 3: years became the conference the as good as the ACC was,
- 7:12Speaker 3: which for twenty years was considered the best conference in
- 7:16Speaker 3: college basketball, and having three teams in the Final Four
- 7:19Speaker 3: in nineteen eighty five Final Fours played at Lexington, one
- 7:23Speaker 3: of the last times it was played on a college campus,
- 7:30Speaker 3: and of course the famous game between Georgetown and Villanova
- 7:35Speaker 3: in the finals Georgetown beat Saint john. Saint John's and
- 7:39Speaker 3: st and Georgetown played three times that year and Georgetown
- 7:43Speaker 3: beat them two out of three, Saint John's beating the
- 7:46Speaker 3: first time and elevated to number one. And those were
- 7:51Speaker 3: two great teams. The Big East was spectacular with spectacular coaches. Patino,
- 7:57Speaker 3: Carnaseca Beheim. We can go right down the line, Masamino
- 8:01Speaker 3: at at Villanova, you know, PJ. Carlossimo at Seaton Hall.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Just I mean amazing coaches in the ninth in the
- 8:11Speaker 3: nine team league and Unfortunately, Saint John's lost the national
- 8:16Speaker 3: semifinal game, and then Villanova played the game of the
- 8:19Speaker 3: century basically when they pulled off the upset sixty sixty
- 8:24Speaker 3: sixty four against Georgetown. And let's face it, Georgetown was
- 8:28Speaker 3: so good, so deep. They had, they had six or
- 8:32Speaker 3: seven NBA guys, They were big, they were strong, They
- 8:35Speaker 3: had the best player, in my opinion, in the history
- 8:37Speaker 3: of the Big East Conference in Patrick Ewing. And those
- 8:42Speaker 3: were great days. Those were those I wish college basketball
- 8:45Speaker 3: can go back to those days where one where players
- 8:49Speaker 3: stayed for at least three years. Not having this these
- 8:52Speaker 3: players play for one year and.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Then one and done.
- 8:56Speaker 3: None.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Oh, I get what you're saying that.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I really can't stand it.
- 8:58Speaker 2: But those now, the other aspect was and then the
- 9:02Speaker 2: allure of it was that he picked local kids. I
- 9:04Speaker 2: know I've highlighted this on other podcasts, but the local
- 9:07Speaker 2: nature is just gone. They want the Europeans, they want
- 9:10Speaker 2: the out of town ers. They don't like local and
- 9:14Speaker 2: I think the transfer portal has really turned coaches off
- 9:18Speaker 2: from the local am I right now, I.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Would disagree with you a little bit on that, Alex.
- 9:24Speaker 3: While the basketball world has gotten bigger because of the
- 9:29Speaker 3: influx of international players, whether it's from Africa, South America
- 9:32Speaker 3: or from Europe. A lot of because of the transfer
- 9:35Speaker 3: portal and because of the money that's attached to it.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Kids who grew up in the New York area now
- 9:41Speaker 3: have a chance to play outside the area and seeing
- 9:45Speaker 3: seeing areas or playing their college ball, whether it's for
- 9:48Speaker 3: a year or two in a city or a town
- 9:53Speaker 3: that they wouldn't have gone to see before. And some
- 9:55Speaker 3: of them just want to just want to get out
- 9:56Speaker 3: of get get out of the hometown for a little bit.
- 9:59Speaker 3: But but you still see local guys I mean being recruited.
- 10:04Speaker 3: I mean Rutgers has done that with you know, with
- 10:08Speaker 3: Dylan Harper, and you know they have they had, they
- 10:12Speaker 3: had a good recruiting locally. I still think there's still
- 10:16Speaker 3: local appeal to play at home, but I think it's
- 10:20Speaker 3: a little bit different than it was back, you know,
- 10:23Speaker 3: forty years ago. One thing about coach Kroniseca, I remember
- 10:29Speaker 3: when he was coach of the New York Nets when
- 10:31Speaker 3: they played at National Coliseum and he was there from
- 10:36Speaker 3: He signed a five year deal at fifty thousand dollars
- 10:39Speaker 3: a year, which in those days was huge money. Five
- 10:42Speaker 3: year two hundred and fifty thousand dollars contract over the
- 10:45Speaker 3: life of the contract, and the first year with the
- 10:51Speaker 3: Nets with seventy one seventy two. They went to the
- 10:58Speaker 3: ABA Finals against the against the Indiana Pacers, and they
- 11:04Speaker 3: pulled off a huge upset. In the first round. They
- 11:07Speaker 3: were playing the Kentucky Colonels, a great, great team that
- 11:10Speaker 3: had won sixty eight games that year and who had
- 11:14Speaker 3: artist Gilmore, Hall of Famer dan Issel, Hall of Famer
- 11:16Speaker 3: Louis dan Pier. They had, they had Darryl Carrier, excellent team.
- 11:23Speaker 3: The Nets finished twenty four games behind him in the
- 11:26Speaker 3: regular season. But Rick Barry, who was who was with
- 11:30Speaker 3: the Nets at that time, had a spectacular series. They
- 11:33Speaker 3: won the first two games in Louisville, and then they
- 11:39Speaker 3: they you know, mixed wins the next couple and then
- 11:45Speaker 3: the Nets won in six games, the biggest, probably the
- 11:48Speaker 3: biggest upset in the nine year history of the ABA. Then, ironically,
- 11:53Speaker 3: in the Eastern Finals they played the Virginia Squires, who
- 11:57Speaker 3: had George Gervin and doctor j and Uh. The Nets
- 12:02Speaker 3: lost the first two games in Virginia. They won the
- 12:06Speaker 3: next two games at the Colisee, but you mean they
- 12:08Speaker 3: had a ger Urban. You mean they had George the Iceman,
- 12:12Speaker 3: the great Hall of Famer George Gervin, and they had
- 12:15Speaker 3: the great doctor J. Julius Irvin. And Uh, each team
- 12:19Speaker 3: won the first each team won all their home games,
- 12:22Speaker 3: so it's three to three at the end of six games.
- 12:25Speaker 3: The Nets won a game seven UH in Norfolk, Virginia
- 12:30Speaker 3: ninety four to eighty eight. And then they lost to
- 12:33Speaker 3: the Indiana Pacers, who won three championships in the nine
- 12:36Speaker 3: year history of the A B A. And are they
- 12:39Speaker 3: the greatest, They have the greatest legacy of of the
- 12:44Speaker 3: of the nine year A B the A B A.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Then the next year they lost, They lost Barry. The Nets,
- 12:50Speaker 3: Uh weren't a good team. He was a fantastic player.
- 12:56Speaker 3: And Louis knew that the pro game wasn't from he's
- 13:01Speaker 3: a teacher, he's a college coach. And he asked out
- 13:04Speaker 3: the last two years of his contract, which the Nets blige,
- 13:07Speaker 3: and he went back to Saint John's and then the
- 13:10Speaker 3: rest is history. And you know, he coached until ninety
- 13:13Speaker 3: two and just a wonderful guy. I only met him.
- 13:17Speaker 3: I only think I met him once.
- 13:19Speaker 2: He coached ninety two, but he was so much around
- 13:21Speaker 2: till ninety seven or ninety eight, that's ninety eight years old.
- 13:25Speaker 2: That's a testament to how much he loved Saint John's
- 13:28Speaker 2: and how much fortitudo he had even into his late nineties.
- 13:31Speaker 3: I mean, no question. I mean, I think they said
- 13:34Speaker 3: they attended a couple of games last year, early in
- 13:36Speaker 3: the season, and he was inducted into the Hall of Fame,
- 13:41Speaker 3: you know, a couple of years after he retired, maybe
- 13:45Speaker 3: like a year after, and Willis Reid was his presenter,
- 13:48Speaker 3: and Willis introduced me to coach Cornesseca. I think that's
- 13:52Speaker 3: the only time I met him was in Springfield, very briefly,
- 13:55Speaker 3: so we didn't have any conversation. Was just the congratulations
- 13:59Speaker 3: and that was But Willis Reed was his presenter because
- 14:02Speaker 3: Willis was a volunteer assistant for for for coach Connaseacer.
- 14:10Speaker 3: I believe after the Knicks fired Willis as their head coach,
- 14:15Speaker 3: and that's where he learned some more about the coaching profession.
- 14:19Speaker 3: And then Willis went to coach Cranton, became assistant coach
- 14:23Speaker 3: at the Sacramento Kington, then coached the Nets and became
- 14:25Speaker 3: general manager of the Nets for a long time.
- 14:30Speaker 1: So well, we all know St.
- 14:32Speaker 2: John's's rival was was you know, Villa was a Georgetown
- 14:36Speaker 2: I should say, But with the Biggie so expanded, I
- 14:39Speaker 2: know the cross river rival Seaton Hall as sort of
- 14:41Speaker 2: a rivalry. But what's the rivalry that comes to mind
- 14:44Speaker 2: for you when it comes to Saint John's Because the
- 14:46Speaker 2: Georgetown rivalry is not as fiery as it used to be.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Right well, it isn't because Georgetown's been down for so
- 14:53Speaker 3: long and they need Georgetown to come back. Now it
- 14:58Speaker 3: looks like Saint John's is coming back and that that
- 15:01Speaker 3: will big games will inspire rivalries. The biggest rivalry in
- 15:06Speaker 3: the early days of the Big East was Syracuse and Georgetown.
- 15:10Speaker 3: That was the biggest rivalry, Uh, if you had to
- 15:13Speaker 3: pick one, uh in the Big East. A lot of
- 15:16Speaker 3: the other ones started to develop as as as the
- 15:20Speaker 3: conference years went by, But the biggest rivalry was Syracuse
- 15:25Speaker 3: and Georgetown. And uh obviously had great coaches in Beheim
- 15:31Speaker 3: and Thompson. You had great players, you know, we've mentioned
- 15:34Speaker 3: them and UH, but that was the biggest rivalry Syracuse
- 15:37Speaker 3: and Georgetown. And then they expanded, and then they brought
- 15:40Speaker 3: the football schools in and then they kicked the football
- 15:43Speaker 3: schools out and now we're back to uh, you know,
- 15:45Speaker 3: in eleven team league and uh, the biggest rivalry in
- 15:51Speaker 3: the in the conference now, I don't know. I don't
- 15:54Speaker 3: know if there's one one bigger, big rivalry right now.
- 15:57Speaker 3: I guess everybody wants to beat you ukon and but
- 16:03Speaker 3: you know, Saint Johnson's seton Hall. I definitely have a rival, oh.
- 16:06Speaker 2: No doubt about it. And the way they go down
- 16:07Speaker 2: to the wire, which we've aired some of the games
- 16:09Speaker 2: on nine to seventy back in the day, right, I mean, yeah,
- 16:12Speaker 2: who can forget that last second three? I think it
- 16:15Speaker 2: was by Powell. I mean the whole thing year after
- 16:18Speaker 2: year between these two. By the way, I want to mention,
- 16:21Speaker 2: he did live long enough to see Saint John's ranked
- 16:24Speaker 2: for the first time since twenty fourteen. I mean, that
- 16:26Speaker 2: was a ten year draft of ranking.
- 16:28Speaker 3: It.
- 16:28Speaker 2: There he is Rick Patino getting his team, and then
- 16:32Speaker 2: maybe lou felt it was you know, he saw it.
- 16:34Speaker 2: He finally saw them ranked, and then the rest is history.
- 16:37Speaker 2: I mean, I'm glad he was round to see it.
- 16:39Speaker 3: Well, it's almost hard to believe that they were unranked
- 16:43Speaker 3: for that long. It really is, but they're good. They're
- 16:47Speaker 3: going to get better rest of the season goes on,
- 16:49Speaker 3: and I think, I mean, obviously last year we said
- 16:53Speaker 3: they were going to be a bubble team. That's what
- 16:54Speaker 3: they were. This year, I think they'll they'll play into
- 16:56Speaker 3: the they have a chance to play into the second
- 16:58Speaker 3: weekend of the NCAA tournament, and I think as the
- 17:02Speaker 3: season goes on, we'll see them getting better. I mean,
- 17:04Speaker 3: all these teams that are inconsistent right now because the
- 17:07Speaker 3: roster changes every year and that makes it difficult. I
- 17:11Speaker 3: mean even Yukon justs three games in three days with
- 17:15Speaker 3: basically a new roster.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Well, you know, you and I about all the air
- 17:20Speaker 2: switching college sports here to the NCAA football world, and
- 17:25Speaker 2: another team close to my heart, Notre Dame, you see,
- 17:29Speaker 2: going far into the college football playoff for what I mean,
- 17:32Speaker 2: they're gonna have a home game. And when I first
- 17:34Speaker 2: started really falling college football as close as I do now,
- 17:39Speaker 2: this wasn't around.
- 17:40Speaker 1: This idea of a home game for.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Notre Dame of the playoffs wasn't around. The playoffs weren't
- 17:43Speaker 2: really even around either. So Freeman's gotten them there, right,
- 17:47Speaker 2: He's gotten them to that you know playoff, but now
- 17:51Speaker 2: this is a totally different ballgame for many ways. Firstly,
- 17:54Speaker 2: it's a twelve game, twelve team playoff, and secondly.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Get a home game out of it.
- 17:59Speaker 2: And you know, I know people are worrying now because
- 18:02Speaker 2: he's linked to the Chicago Bears job, and I swear
- 18:05Speaker 2: Notre Dame Chicago have that affinity because of the closest
- 18:07Speaker 2: to each other.
- 18:09Speaker 1: It wouldn't be surprising. But he's got to finish the
- 18:11Speaker 1: job here and he might.
- 18:12Speaker 2: You you thinking he might actually do something big for
- 18:15Speaker 2: Notre Dame in the playoffs?
- 18:16Speaker 1: What do you think?
- 18:17Speaker 3: Oh? I think Not Dame has a very good team.
- 18:19Speaker 3: I think they're physical, they have two great running backs,
- 18:24Speaker 3: Riley Leonard knows how to run that offense. They may
- 18:27Speaker 3: be a little short and wide receiver category, but I
- 18:32Speaker 3: think they have a very good team. I think they
- 18:33Speaker 3: can grind, grind out games. I think they can wear
- 18:36Speaker 3: teams down. I think that I really do think they
- 18:39Speaker 3: have a chance. A little disappointed and now I'm nitpicking that.
- 18:44Speaker 3: You know, they gave up so many yards and points
- 18:49Speaker 3: to USC the other day, But I think they have
- 18:52Speaker 3: a chance now they got they don't get a bye,
- 18:55Speaker 3: even though they get a home game. They got to
- 18:58Speaker 3: win four games to win the championship. It but I
- 19:01Speaker 3: think Noa Dame. I definitely think Notre Dame has a chance.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Obviously there's a lot of good teams in there. I
- 19:10Speaker 3: not crazy about these conference championship games getting in a
- 19:13Speaker 3: way of of selection Sunday, which I guess is gonna
- 19:18Speaker 3: happen this weekend. I'm not a big fan of the brackets.
- 19:23Speaker 3: They should recede if they're going to do it like
- 19:25Speaker 3: they're doing it this year. Again, this is the first year.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Maybe they'll change, but again Alabama is not playing this week,
- 19:37Speaker 3: george is playing Texas. Will use it as an example.
- 19:40Speaker 3: Georgia did beat Texas pretty handily in Austin. But if
- 19:46Speaker 3: Texas wins this time and gets Georgia a third loss,
- 19:49Speaker 3: and Georgia lost to Alabama, even though Georgia made that
- 19:52Speaker 3: great comeback but they did lose in the end, does
- 19:54Speaker 3: Alabama jump them and does Alabama win by not playing
- 19:58Speaker 3: this week? So these conference champion games, I believe in
- 20:03Speaker 3: the next three to five years will be gone. They
- 20:06Speaker 3: serve no purpose, and so we're gonna have It's gonna
- 20:12Speaker 3: be very interesting to see what happens. I mean, there
- 20:15Speaker 3: are a lot of good teams. I don't know, Alex,
- 20:18Speaker 3: I have no idea how Ohio State, a twenty one
- 20:20Speaker 3: point favorite, lost at home to Michigan with everything on
- 20:24Speaker 3: the line on on Saturday. I don't I don't.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Call any given Saturday. And I mean, look, Michigan nailed it.
- 20:36Speaker 2: And you know, it's kind of funny the difference. I
- 20:40Speaker 2: hate does it compare the NFL team to a college team.
- 20:43Speaker 2: But you look at the day before and the Raiders
- 20:47Speaker 2: fumbling their go ahead possible against the Chiefs and Michigan
- 20:52Speaker 2: nailing it. That's sports, that's football. But you know, you're right,
- 20:56Speaker 2: how did it even get to that point after? You know,
- 20:59Speaker 2: Michigan did turn over the ball a few times during
- 21:02Speaker 2: that game, but they were resilient.
- 21:03Speaker 1: And kudos to Sharon.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Moore, And I know he's on an up and down year,
- 21:08Speaker 2: but and replacing Harball is very tough to do, right,
- 21:11Speaker 2: we can both go.
- 21:13Speaker 1: But Moore was there. I picked because he was there
- 21:16Speaker 1: under Harball's tutelage.
- 21:17Speaker 2: So I would say they should give him a couple
- 21:20Speaker 2: more years, let him recruit his own guys and see
- 21:22Speaker 2: what happens.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:24Speaker 3: No, I think that game. Say not that he was
- 21:26Speaker 3: gonna lose his job anyway, but that game definitely saved him.
- 21:30Speaker 3: I mean, Ryan Day, you hear rumors coming out of Cleveland,
- 21:34Speaker 3: Columbus and Cincinnati. The Ohio media, you know, basically said
- 21:38Speaker 3: you're one and four against Michigan and if you if
- 21:42Speaker 3: you don't have a good playoff, talking about firing a guy.
- 21:47Speaker 3: I think the guy who's forty eight and one Ryan
- 21:49Speaker 3: Days against Big East, Big East, Big Ten opponents, but
- 21:56Speaker 3: one and four against Michigan. So he's lost six lost,
- 22:00Speaker 3: allegedly lost six the Big twelve game of Big Ten games,
- 22:04Speaker 3: and five of them to Michigan. You know, you lose
- 22:06Speaker 3: when you lose such a historic and bitter rival as Michigan. Well,
- 22:11Speaker 3: if it was Michigan, the same thing. If the media
- 22:16Speaker 3: is going to come down hard on you. And let's
- 22:19Speaker 3: face it, Ohio State is big in the state of Ohio.
- 22:22Speaker 3: It's they're a professional team. They have a twenty million
- 22:26Speaker 3: dollar roster with nil money.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Do you remember they were going to use all their
- 22:31Speaker 2: nil MILLII almost like a free agent signing to trying
- 22:33Speaker 2: and get Marvin Harrison junior back. I mean, this is
- 22:36Speaker 2: not just a kid's game anymore. This is like free
- 22:39Speaker 2: agency and I never thought we'd use that term.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Well, it's free agency and they're professionals, so so we'll see.
- 22:49Speaker 3: I mean, the Big Ten has a great chance to
- 22:52Speaker 3: win the championship because you know, as of this week,
- 22:58Speaker 3: they have Oregon at one over Penn State is three,
- 23:03Speaker 3: Ohio State is six, Indiana is nine, and what a
- 23:06Speaker 3: great year for Indiana. You usually do not see turnarounds
- 23:11Speaker 3: like that in college football, like they like Indiana's pulled
- 23:14Speaker 3: off this year.
- 23:16Speaker 1: So true.
- 23:17Speaker 3: You know.
- 23:17Speaker 2: What's interesting also is that my friend is a Nitney
- 23:19Speaker 2: Lion fan, so I got a maybe on a fanatics
- 23:22Speaker 2: jersey for the Nidney Lions. I don't know yet, we
- 23:24Speaker 2: have to see, but Oregon is a very interesting case
- 23:28Speaker 2: because I just think it's it's like, were they this
- 23:32Speaker 2: down in the Pac twelve. I know they had some runs,
- 23:34Speaker 2: but they are dominant in the Big Ten. Is it
- 23:37Speaker 2: just an even more even field for them or what?
- 23:41Speaker 3: Well, you know, it's funny you mentioned that when you
- 23:42Speaker 3: look a look at some of these games this weekend
- 23:46Speaker 3: in the Power four conferences, each one of the Powerful
- 23:50Speaker 3: Conferences championship games have a first year member playing in it.
- 23:56Speaker 3: In the Big Ten, you have Oregon playing Penn State.
- 23:59Speaker 3: In Big twelve, you have Arizona State, a former PAC
- 24:04Speaker 3: Pac twelve team just like Oregon, playing for the championship
- 24:08Speaker 3: against Iowa State. In the ACC, you have a school
- 24:13Speaker 3: from the Group of five, not even a Power five
- 24:17Speaker 3: as it was called last year for SMU, a very
- 24:21Speaker 3: good team who was in the American Athletic Conference last
- 24:24Speaker 3: year playing for the championship in the ACC.
- 24:28Speaker 2: By the way, Arizona State chuted to coach Kenny I
- 24:30Speaker 2: don't have you heard about this, but he gave his
- 24:32Speaker 2: staff bonuses after he got a bone.
- 24:33Speaker 1: How cool is that?
- 24:35Speaker 3: I heard about that. He got a two hundred thousand
- 24:37Speaker 3: dollars bonus for getting to the championship game and winning
- 24:41Speaker 3: nine games, and he's sharing it with his assistant coaches,
- 24:44Speaker 3: and that is that is a class a class move.
- 24:48Speaker 3: And in the SEC championship game, you have a Big
- 24:51Speaker 3: twelve team last year playing for the SEC championship Texas
- 24:56Speaker 3: versus Georgia. So basically, getting back to your original point,
- 25:01Speaker 3: I guess it just shows the parody of college football.
- 25:04Speaker 3: But anybody who tried to put down the PAC twelve
- 25:07Speaker 3: or the or the Big twelve or even even the
- 25:11Speaker 3: Group of four team like SMU, Well, they proved it
- 25:15Speaker 3: this year. They went through, they went through the whole
- 25:17Speaker 3: year and they're twelve.
- 25:21Speaker 2: I believe all of these teams are in here now
- 25:23Speaker 2: because of the UCF deal where they were undefeated and
- 25:26Speaker 2: they didn't.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Get any mention, any mention.
- 25:30Speaker 2: This is why the playoff exists, right, the exposed play Yeah,
- 25:33Speaker 2: that's why the expanded playoffs exists.
- 25:35Speaker 3: And Alex forty years ago when they said they couldn't
- 25:39Speaker 3: have a playoff in college football because it would affect
- 25:42Speaker 3: the balls and you can't you can't have the kids
- 25:44Speaker 3: playing these many playoff games, that was bull crap. They
- 25:47Speaker 3: should have had it. They should have had it's seventy
- 25:49Speaker 3: years ago a playoff system because voting for the national
- 25:55Speaker 3: champion like they did before nineteen ninety I believe it was.
- 26:01Speaker 3: And then they had the national championship game was just
- 26:04Speaker 3: the playoff basically was just two teams, then four now
- 26:07Speaker 3: twelve and I think it's gonna go to fourteen in
- 26:09Speaker 3: a couple of years. It should have been like this
- 26:11Speaker 3: all the time. So, I mean, this is gonna be
- 26:15Speaker 3: very interesting. I'm really looking forward to it, and I
- 26:18Speaker 3: want to and we'll run into something that they're gonna
- 26:21Speaker 3: have to fix. And I just brought up something a
- 26:24Speaker 3: little while ago. They're gonna have to get rid of
- 26:25Speaker 3: these conference championship games. They're not doing anybody any good. Yes,
- 26:29Speaker 3: they're making money for the conferences, but it's time to
- 26:35Speaker 3: it's for competition's sake. It's time. If you're gonna have
- 26:38Speaker 3: this kind of playoff, you have to blow up the
- 26:41Speaker 3: conference championship games. They don't mean anything.
- 26:46Speaker 2: Lou I gotta say, we didn't cover the major NFL
- 26:50Speaker 2: teams around here because it's just all news at this point.
- 26:53Speaker 1: So the new news will be next week.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Maybe we talk about where mister Soto goes real quick
- 27:00Speaker 2: before we wrap tonight.
- 27:03Speaker 1: This whole game is a game. Okay, it's a whole.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Game that Boris is playing, and I'm used to it
- 27:08Speaker 2: by now, but it's just it's a stressor it's like
- 27:12Speaker 2: the holidays. We don't enjoy Christmas. We don't want to
- 27:15Speaker 2: deal with this stress. But you know, Boris is a
- 27:17Speaker 2: showman more than an agent. Sometimes well he thinks he.
- 27:21Speaker 3: He might be, and he might be. He thinks he
- 27:23Speaker 3: is running baseball. He might be the most powerful man
- 27:26Speaker 3: in baseball. Who knows. I mean, I'm gonna just say
- 27:29Speaker 3: what we said on earlier podcast, Hey, best hitter in baseball.
- 27:35Speaker 3: I believe Soto is all around, most disciplined, you know,
- 27:39Speaker 3: obviously has the high on base percentage. As as a
- 27:42Speaker 3: Mets fan, yeah, well, I like to see the Mets
- 27:44Speaker 3: get get Soto, Yes, but as we talked about, if
- 27:47Speaker 3: they're going to give him seven hundred million dollars or
- 27:49Speaker 3: six hundred fifty million, whatever the heck, he's going to
- 27:51Speaker 3: get and I think we're gonna know. We're gonna know
- 27:55Speaker 3: either on day one of the Baseball Winter Meetings. You know,
- 27:59Speaker 3: we said between the Sevember fifteenth and January fifteenth. Think
- 28:02Speaker 3: it's going to be closer to December fifteenth. But if
- 28:04Speaker 3: the Mets don't get him, I hope and I'm sure
- 28:08Speaker 3: they have a plan. B. There's a lot of good
- 28:10Speaker 3: players out there, and you could spread one one Soto
- 28:13Speaker 3: salary over three or four players, So we'll see. Yeah,
- 28:17Speaker 3: I would like to see the Mets get them, but
- 28:19Speaker 3: the Mets have you know, the Mets have other areas
- 28:22Speaker 3: to fill in, especially you.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Know, especially losing the Savarino to the A's today for
- 28:26Speaker 2: three years and I guess what seventy mili I mean,
- 28:29Speaker 2: that's a good, good sized contract for him.
- 28:31Speaker 3: That's a good size contract for the age thing. I
- 28:33Speaker 3: think it might be their biggest free agent signing in
- 28:37Speaker 3: ACEH history.
- 28:38Speaker 2: And it's almost like a trade. I mean, I know
- 28:40Speaker 2: only bounds run of it, but Montos was the A's guy.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Now he's on the Mets, so it's just it's on
- 28:44Speaker 2: a bit of a trade indirectly here.
- 28:46Speaker 1: But Lou, always a pleasure.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Hope your Christmas shopping is going well and maybe maybe
- 28:52Speaker 2: Yankee fans will have that present under the tree. We'll
- 28:54Speaker 2: have to see in the next week's are coming up.
- 28:57Speaker 2: But join me next week, will you, Lou for another Terminos?
- 29:00Speaker 3: Yeah? You all? I want to talk about next week
- 29:03Speaker 3: the Golden at Back.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Yeah, and that'll be fitting because it's a Michael's k
- 29:08Speaker 2: last week with the boys La Greca and Rosenberg, so
- 29:12Speaker 2: we'll have to talk about that as well. Lou, always
- 29:15Speaker 2: a pleasure, Thank you, my friend. And that's been Lou
- 29:20Speaker 2: Temanhow's take on the One Leg Up Network
