Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Chris Abercrombie: PPTA talks rising attendance numbers from ERO
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The ERRO, the Education Review Office, has given us some
- 0:03Speaker 1: good news this morning. School attendance back up to pre
- 0:06Speaker 1: COVID levels, sixty percent regularly showing up to class, which
- 0:10Speaker 1: is good. Eighty percent of kids think that school is
- 0:12Speaker 1: important for their future. Well, thank god. That's up to
- 0:15Speaker 1: Chris Abercrombie PPTA present with me this morning. Chris, good morning,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Good morning. Well that's good news. Is this parents making
- 0:22Speaker 1: them go? I see that parents are less comfortable with
- 0:25Speaker 1: them having time off in the survey too.
- 0:28Speaker 2: It's been of everything, so it's sort of it's been
- 0:31Speaker 2: a team effort, has been schools sort of working really
- 0:33Speaker 2: hard to change attitude. It's been parents listening to what's
- 0:36Speaker 2: going on and making decisions. So there's been a real
- 0:40Speaker 2: team effort.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Do we say that this is David cmour and has
- 0:43Speaker 1: get tough and get the message out, maybe not get tough,
- 0:46Speaker 1: but get the message out there. Is that working?
- 0:49Speaker 2: I think definitely. Sort of having it as a focus
- 0:51Speaker 2: has helped. I mean school's have been working on this since,
- 0:54Speaker 2: you know, after COVID, but I mean having that extra
- 0:57Speaker 2: focus has definitely helped.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Do you think having the pun or the talk of
- 1:01Speaker 1: punishment helps too.
- 1:04Speaker 2: I think for certain groups, the sort of the legal
- 1:07Speaker 2: aspect of it definitely helps. But you know, I think
- 1:10Speaker 2: for those those hardcore truant students or families that that
- 1:15Speaker 2: sort of need their support, I don't think that's helping.
- 1:18Speaker 1: No, I don't think so either. But hopefully the announcement
- 1:20Speaker 1: they made this week will do something about that. Hey,
- 1:23Speaker 1: how many days off have we got? Have kids got
- 1:25Speaker 1: for strikes and teacher ani days this year?
- 1:30Speaker 2: Do we know? Wells from secondary we've had one strike
- 1:34Speaker 2: and a number of roster and home days and for
- 1:38Speaker 2: teacher any days, I think there's for this year to
- 1:40Speaker 2: approve by the government and two available to schools.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Okay, so if you add up, I mean, if if
- 1:45Speaker 1: you take your kids out of school for a week,
- 1:48Speaker 1: you're adding the teacher ani days, you add in the strikes,
- 1:51Speaker 1: you're adding the holidays, things start to look a bit grim.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Yeah. So it was clearing the report too that their holidays,
- 1:58Speaker 2: kids taking time in holiday holidays in school time. We're
- 2:01Speaker 2: still an issory for schools. So I think, you know,
- 2:04Speaker 2: everyone agrees it's really important to be at school and
- 2:07Speaker 2: focused on what we and focused on getting their teaching
- 2:10Speaker 2: and learning happening.
- 2:11Speaker 1: All right, brilliant, appreciate your time.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Chris.
