- 0:07The Seattle Mariners face the California Angels at Anaheim Stadium in California on April 11, 1990.
- 0:13This early season game proved to be a classic pitchers duel featuring the Mariners Eric Hanson versus the Angels Mark Langston.
- 0:21This is the local Seattle radio broadcast featuring announcers Dave Nyhouse, Rick Riz and Joe Simpson.
- 0:30Here's a look at tonight's starting lineups. First of all for the visiting M's, managed by Jim Lefebvre.
- 0:34Leading it off at second base is Harold Reynolds, batting second in center field.
- 0:38Ken Griffey Jr., batting third is the designated hitter Alvin Davis.
- 0:42Hitting clean up in right field, Jeffrey Leonard. Hitting fifth at first base, Peter Bryan.
- 0:46Batting sixth back at third base, Edgar Martinez.
- 0:49Henry Kato in left field will bat seventh. Hitting eighth to catcher Dave Valley.
- 0:53And batting ninth at shortstop is Brian Giles.
- 0:55Eric Hanson for the M's, Mark Langston going for California.
- 0:59Last year with the Mariners four and five with the Expos 12 and nine overall.
- 1:03A record of 16 and 14. He has completed his warm up tosses. Here we go.
- 1:07And for the play by play, here's Dave.
- 1:09Thank you Rick and a very pleasant good evening everybody from Anaheim Stadium.
- 1:13Harold Reynolds to lead it off against his old teammate, the third baseman Jack Howell.
- 1:17Making his 90 debut in on the grass at third base. The outfield straight away.
- 1:21Harold of course batting from the right hand side and Langston ready to deliver his first pitch in that angel uniform.
- 1:26Here's the wind and here is that first pitch. And the fast ball is taken down low, ball one.
- 1:31One ball and no strikes to count. The outfield not that deep and they are straight away.
- 1:36Howell, Macklemore, Ray Joyner, the infield from third to first.
- 1:40Bechette, White and Washington the outfield from left to right.
- 1:43The next pitch fast ball very high this time to Harold Reynolds, ball two.
- 1:46Two balls and no strikes. And just looking around the league, both leagues as a matter of fact,
- 1:52how fortunate we are to be here in Southern California tonight.
- 1:56The 2-0 pitch to Reynolds and it's very high, ball three.
- 1:59Three balls and no strikes. And Langston has to be nervous.
- 2:02He says it's just another game. Well you can tell that to the press.
- 2:05But you've got to tell that to Mark Langston when you look in the mirror.
- 2:08And I'm not so sure he believes that.
- 2:10Here comes the 3-0 on the way to Reynolds. Down this time it is very high, ball four.
- 2:14So Langston in his first four pitches doesn't even come close to home play.
- 2:18And with the leadoff man aboard that will bring up Ken Griffey Jr. who is 5 for 9.
- 2:24That's 5.56 batting average. The home run on opening night here and three RBIs.
- 2:30First baseman Wally Joyner will hold Harold Reynolds onto the bag at first.
- 2:34This of course the rubber game of this three game series.
- 2:37With the Angels winning last night 7-0 and the M's on opening night 7-4.
- 2:43Middle of that infield at double play depth. Left hander against the left hander.
- 2:46Langston stretches the pitch to Griffey. A fastball. Steve Icke on the inside corner on one.
- 2:53The off day tomorrow and then the great opening night.
- 2:56And by the way Friday night's game is a sellout. It will be the first one in Mariner history.
- 3:00So get out to the Kingdom early. First pitch is at 7.35.
- 3:04The festivities beginning at 7 o'clock at night.
- 3:08They throw the first base and Reynolds is back to the bag.
- 3:11Well that's going to be a great, great feeling to come to that Kingdom on Friday night.
- 3:16The sellout. The stretch and the move again to first base and Reynolds again back to the bag standing up.
- 3:21Langston 29 years of age. With the Mariners 4 and 5 last year and with the Expos 12 and 9.
- 3:29Langston of course a two time gold glove winner while with the Mariners.
- 3:33He can feel his position. The stretch and the pitch to Griffey and the curve swung on and tapped Powell at the plate.
- 3:38All into the count on Ken Griffey Jr. and Mark Langston's best friend is on deck.
- 3:44That would be Alvin Davis the designated hitter this evening.
- 3:48A broadcast time Friday at 7.06. It figures to be Scott Sanderson going to the mound making his Oakland debut against Scott Bankhead.
- 3:59Reynolds a fair lead over at first base. Here comes Langston's stretch.
- 4:03The 0-2 pitch on the way now to Griffey and the fastball check swing taken just high and outside.
- 4:08One ball and two strikes.
- 4:12We are so lucky to be down here because snow all over the Midwest.
- 4:16They tried and tried and tried to play in Cleveland and that finally has been snowed out a step throw through the first base.
- 4:24Chicago at Milwaukee. A blizzard in Milwaukee. That was snowed out today.
- 4:29Snowed in Chicago where the Cubs hosted the Phillies.
- 4:33The 1-2 pitch and high and outside as Langston overthrows the fastball.
- 4:37Two balls and two strikes. Langston wearing number 12 on his back.
- 4:42California will welcome the Minnesota Twins in for a four game series beginning tomorrow night.
- 4:49Langston again is ready. The 2-2 pitch to Ken Griffey Jr. now.
- 4:54The double check of Reynolds. Reynolds goes. The pitch has swung on.
- 4:56A little blooper hit in the shallow left field coming up in the area of the Shet.
- 4:59He is there to make the catch all the way down to second as Reynolds.
- 5:02The throwback to first double drive.
- 5:06Reynolds was standing on the bag at second base when the Shet came up and made a routine catch.
- 5:11And Reynolds was out on the second end of the double play by 45 feet. He had no shot.
- 5:16A little hit run but Reynolds never was able to pick up the ball and the ball was out in front of him in shallow left field.
- 5:22The Shet had an easy play on it and Reynolds was standing on the bag when the Shet made the catch.
- 5:27So he had plenty of time to get the ball and wanted Lollie Jones but Reynolds could not pick up the ball.
- 5:31So 7-3 the double play and here is Alvin Davis now.
- 5:36One for eight in the first two games of the year.
- 5:39The left hander against the left hander. I'm sure they've talked this over during the winter.
- 5:43The pitch on the way and the curve to Alvin is a little bit low and outside ball one and Langston with a smile on his face.
- 5:50As he comes down to accept the throwback from the catcher Lance Parrish.
- 5:55Alvin hanging out over the plate and Mark in with the 1-0 pitch.
- 5:59Fast ball high and outside ball two. Two balls and no strikes.
- 6:03Sixteen million dollars for five years and friends that is all guaranteed gold from the Cowboy for Mark Langston.
- 6:122-0. The 2-0 pitch to Alvin Davis now. This time the fast ball very high.
- 6:17Ball three, 3-0. Langston does not have good location at all here early in the ball game.
- 6:29Davis undoubtedly going to be looking at a 3-0 pitch. Mark into his wind in the 3-0 pitch down.
- 6:34It's high ball four. So he walked Reynolds on four straight pitches and now he walks Davis on four straight pitches.
- 6:41And with two outs and Alvin at first base here comes the Hackman Jeffrey Leonard.
- 6:47Leonard two for nine in the first two games of this series.
- 6:52The commissioner of baseball Mr. Fay Vincent will throw out the first ball on Friday night.
- 6:57Dr. Bobby Brown the president of the American League will also be there.
- 7:03Pre-game festivities including a laser and fireworks show begin at seven o'clock. So do get to the dome early.
- 7:09Here comes the stretch. The pitch on the way to Jeffrey fouls straight back off to our right.
- 7:14And that goes almost into our colleagues broadcast booth. Ken Brett now coming down the road to our right.
- 7:220-1. Peter O'Brien is next. Langston leaning down on that right knee.
- 7:3429 year old blonde is set and the 0-1 on the way now. Fastball swung on and tapped to the third baseman.
- 7:40Make it Macklemore the shortstop to go to the hole to get it and get the force on the sliding Alvin Davis at second base.
- 7:46Six to four. So Mark Langston's first inning as an angel is in the books. No runs, no hits, no errors and one man left.
- 7:57We're excited to have you with us from Anaheim Stadium after a half an inning. The angels against Eric Hansen coming up.
- 8:27Nothing beats the fun.
- 8:30Please, Chris Van Cole.
- 8:33Please, Chris Van Cole.
- 8:37Nothing beats the fun.
- 8:39Gotta move, gotta play it cool.
- 8:42Feel it through this golden rule.
- 8:46Nothing beats it.
- 8:48Please, Chris Van Cole.
- 8:52Please, Chris Van Cole.
- 8:55Nothing beats the fun.
- 8:59Nothing beats the fun.
- 9:02Thank you.
- 9:05Sure, Phillips Lighting is a worldwide leader and they can provide the best lighting for any business.
- 9:09But what does better lighting mean to you?
- 9:11Well, it means reduced energy costs, increased productivity and when you get right down to it, better lighting means better business.
- 9:18Now, while Phillips Lighting doesn't claim they can change the world, they sure do a great job of lighting it.
- 9:23It's time to change your bulb to Phillips.
- 9:25Look for your local Phillips Lighting distributor in the yellow pages or call 1-800-631-1259.
- 9:35Well, some 20 to 25,000 fans on hand here at beautiful Anaheim Stadium tonight to watch the debut of left-hander Mark Langston in the top half of the inning.
- 9:43He threw 15 pitches, showed his nervousness a little bit.
- 9:46He threw 10 of his 15 out of the strike zone, but he comes away unscathed and now it's Eric Hanson's turn.
- 9:53The big tall right-hander, last year the Bounder's second biggest winner, although he missed three months, with a record of 9-5 against the Angels 0-1.
- 10:03So Eric Hanson makes his debut, his 90th debut here tonight against the switch-hitting center fielder of the California Angels, Devon White, stepping up to lead it off.
- 10:12White is hitless in his first two games of the year. He has gone 0-4-8.
- 10:18And of course, he'll turn around back from the left-hand side against Eric Hanson, who has as good a curveball as Langston, when he has it.
- 10:26Matter of fact, he has as good a curveball as anybody, including Bert Latham, Lyle Evan, who the Bounders beat here on opening night.
- 10:32Eric Hanson enjoys his wind in his first pitch of the ball game on the way, the fastball strike inside corner 0-1.
- 10:38Dick Voltaggio is the man calling balls and strikes, Mark Johnson at first base, Jim McKean is at second, and Ken Kizer around at third.
- 10:46He deals the next pitcher, high fastball taken this time by Devon White. One ball and one strike.
- 10:55You can't get in Friday night, and you can't unless you have a ticket. Here comes the 1-1 pitcher on the way to White.
- 11:00Now it's a swing and a miss and a good fastball. A ball and two strikes, why not think in terms of Saturday night or Sunday afternoon?
- 11:07Matt Young makes his return to the King-Galvin Ameri-Uniform on Saturday night, and Brian Holman, the winner out here, and the opener on Sunday afternoon.
- 11:14The pitcher checks swing, little capper goes into the California Angel dugout along the third base side. A ball and two strikes.
- 11:25You want to talk about season tickets? Why, we've got some account executives on the line right now to chat with you.
- 11:30You call 343-4600 to provide you with a personal account executive. The pitch to White. Big breaking ball, strikes, three calls, and oh, what a curve that time.
- 11:40We've seen it all spring long. He just had Devon White get in his buckling. Back to our breaking ball into Bob White.
- 11:47No argument from White with home plate up by Vic Montagio. He just put the bat down, took off the helmet, took the walk back to the dugout.
- 11:55Here's Johnny Ray, the switch hitting second baseman. Ray three for seven in the series. The home run on opening night.
- 12:04Here comes the line now by Eric Hanson, the pitcher, Johnny Ray, very high, the fastball ball one. One ball and no strikes.
- 12:12Edgar Martinez in on the grass at third base. Going 1-0 on the way to Johnny Ray. A chain strike inside corner. One ball and one strike.
- 12:26Hanson peering in to get the sign from Vowell, the big right hander's next pitcher on the way now. That's a swing and a foul straight back at fastball that time.
- 12:33A ball and two strikes. For those of you listening in Boise, Idaho this evening, why, new Mariner owner Jeff Smollin is going to be your way tomorrow.
- 12:43He'll be speaking at the Boise Rotary Club luncheon at noon. Drop by and say hello to Jeff.
- 12:48Here comes the wind and the one-two pitch on the way to Ray. Fastball strike three called outside corner, and that had some smoke on it as it went over the outside edge.
- 12:57He strikes out wide on the one-two breaking ball. He comes back one-two on Johnny Ray. Fastball keeps it away from Ray on the outside corner, so he's off to a great start.
- 13:05Why? Because he's getting out in front of the count, mixing up his pitches, and throwing strikes.
- 13:10Talking to Brent Knackert, the 20-year-old right hander on the pregame show about that, he said, I think it's important to get an established strike in your first pitch to every batter.
- 13:20And he did that almost every time last night. In the seven hitters he faced, he threw six first pitch strikes.
- 13:26Here's Wally Joyner in the fifth pitch to Joyner now on the curve. That miss is high on outside. Not much of a snap to it.
- 13:31One ball and no strikes. Two outs in the bottom of the first and no score.
- 13:37The wind and the one-oh on the way now to Joyner. This time the fastball strike outside edge. One ball and one strike.
- 13:44The Bounders jump on their charter and head home after tonight's game. We'll arrive at Sea Tack somewhere between three, 3.30, somewhere around there.
- 13:52The 1-1 pitch now. Swing and a miss and a big curve ball. A ball and two strikes on Wally Joyner.
- 13:59Damn, the Angels have yet to put the ball in play. Oh, Barry Canson here in the first.
- 14:06One and two. Canson into his wind. The 1-2 pitch to Joyner now in the fastball high.
- 14:13Over threw that ball. Really tried to get something extra on it.
- 14:18Wally Davis is in the on-deck circle.
- 14:22Barry Canson back in the 2-2 pitch on the way in the fastball a little high. Ball three. Three and two.
- 14:38Canson with a payoff pitch now. Here she comes in a fastball foul straight back.
- 14:43Off to our left into the mezzanine section. We'll count three balls, two strikes.
- 14:51Scottie Bankhead. The call on Friday night against Scott Sanderson, now the Oakland A's who were shut out today.
- 14:58Here comes the 3-2 pitch again in the fastball high. Ball four. So Joyner, the first base with two outs.
- 15:06And here's Chilly Davis.
- 15:11Chilly had a home run last night. A 418-foot home run.
- 15:16Deep into the red seats and left off Randy Johnson.
- 15:21And then one hour later Dante Bechet hit a line drive into the right field seats. 383-foot class.
- 15:31Two outs and one on.
- 15:35Barry, as the one decided he wants in the pitch, a fastball swung on and popped out of play.
- 15:41That came right into the kitchen of Mr. Chilly Davis right in on the hands.
- 15:46Chilly's home run last night. Dave would have landed out by the old big A scoreboard that used to be out there.
- 15:51It's now out of the parking lot. This ballpark has changed quite a bit over the years.
- 15:56It would have rolled under it. No one ever hit that big A. It was about another 150-200 feet beyond the fence.
- 16:02But it looked like it was right on top of it. It was so large.
- 16:05The next delivery is high and the count is one ball and one strike.
- 16:13Brian Downing would have home run last night out of the lineup again this evening. Still suffering from sore ribs.
- 16:19The 1-1 pitch on the way and it's a swinging a foul back up against the screen. Another good fastball.
- 16:25A ball and two strikes.
- 16:28For those of you who have cable and are up that flight, Roy Firestone's show called Sports Lock features Jim LaFever tonight.
- 16:35And I believe it's at midnight in the Seattle area on ESPN.
- 16:40Here comes the stretch and the one-two pitch. The runner goes in the change curve. Strike three called.
- 16:44And Mr. Eric Hanson has struck out the side and he looks as sharp as I've ever seen him.
- 16:49So Eric Hanson, three strikeouts in one walk and the Angels gone in the first. No runs. No hits.
- 16:56No errors. And no and one man left. So we're through one.
- 17:01And as we go to the second it will be Pete O'Brien, Edgar Martinez and Henry Connell for the M's.
- 17:05The Melloners and the Angels. No score.
- 17:10At the St. Petersburg Times, press operators had to wait while pages were sent by hand from an office miles away.
- 17:17But then, with the help of GTE, they came up with a way to send those pages over fiber optic phone lines.
- 17:24Saving precious time and money.
- 17:27You see, at GTE it's not just communications we offer. It's solutions.
- 17:32GTE. The power is on.

- 18:08It is all in Farback Nuka.
- 18:13Some people think the new Volkswagen Passat, our new flagship, is really a spaceship disguised as a big European family car.
- 18:20Because the Passat has a surprising amount of space inside. More than you'd ever expect.
- 18:25More than even a Volvo 7 Series. So in the Passat, experiencing Farback Nuka is a big idea.
- 18:34Farback Nuka. It's what makes a car a Volkswagen.
- 18:41Well there we go to the second inning of play. I'm Dave DeHouse with Rick Riz, our producer engineer Kevin Kremen,
- 18:46hope it's a delightful evening or you may be listening throughout the Great Pacific Northwest
- 18:51and we're looking forward to coming home and seeing you on Friday night for the lift lifter against the world champions, the Oakland Athletics.
- 18:58Pete O'Brien will start it off at Mark Langston's first pitch to O'Brien is a fastball very high and inside.
- 19:04So in 16 pitches so far thrown by Langston, he has thrown 11 balls.
- 19:13One and O, the count on O'Brien and the 1-0 pitch by Langston now the fastball low and inside.
- 19:19Ball two, two balls and O strikes. By contrast, Eric Hanson in striking out the side in the bottom of the first through 20 pitches and 13 of them were strikes.
- 19:29Mark winds the 2-0 pitch down to O'Brien and it's taken this time for a strike right on the inside corner after these 2-1.
- 19:38Six years of professional baseball, Mark Langston 10 games over 500, 86 and 76.
- 19:45The 2-1 pitch by Langston swung on and off the hands popped up into foul territory.
- 19:49Jack Howell, the third baseman over near the stand to backhand the ball almost in the front row down there.
- 19:55One out.
- 20:00And here comes Edgar Martinez. Dino Cole still having problems with the muscle spasms in his back.
- 20:08Martinez given a chance to play and has played very well. He is four for seven in the first two games of the year.
- 20:16Henry Cato is on deck.
- 20:21Langston tug at the red bill of that angel cap. Stairs down and has the sign from Parrish in the left hander's pitch now.
- 20:29Very high again the fastball ball one. One ball and no strikes. Langston certainly has given this reporter some of his greatest thrills and I know you also.
- 20:411984 here comes the wind and the 1-0 pitch on the way. Fastball strike across the letters. One ball and one strike.
- 20:49He and Doc Gooden both as rookies winning the American National League Strikeout Championship.
- 20:58Mark into his wind and the 1-1 pitch on the way now. The curve just inside. I think that was probably the slider more than the curve.
- 21:06Two and one. Of course taking that no hitter last year into the ninth inning in Toronto. Not only losing the no hitter but the ball game.
- 21:16Here comes the 2-1 pitch on the way now. Martinez strike is called this time a breaking ball. Two balls and two strikes.
- 21:32And Mark's two-two pitch to Edgar and the fastball foul high off the first base side into the view level, the upper deck here.
- 21:40Two balls and two strikes. Well when you file a claim with an insurance company you should get fast there in friendly service.
- 21:46Farmers Insurance Group of Companies understands this principle and has for over 60 years. America can depend on farmers.
- 21:57Langston's two-two pitch to Edgar Martinez. Swung on and a fly ball hit deep into right field. Back goes Pavel. He's got the room on the track to make the catch.
- 22:05365 feet away. Edgar Martinez gave that one a pretty good ride. Two down and here comes Henry Knotto.
- 22:18We mentioned a lot of snow in the Midwest. Milwaukee and the White Sox snowed out. Cleveland and the Yankees snowed out. Cubs and the Phillies snowed out.
- 22:29In 10 today, Boston beat Detroit 3-2. They sweep that three game series against the Tigers.
- 22:38Here's Henry Knotto and the pitch on the way to him now. Henry takes it. Fastball high. Ball one. One ball and no strikes.
- 22:44Minnesota behind Kevin Tappany. Terry Wayne. Terry Leach. Rick Aguilera. Shutting out Oakland 3-0. Seven-hundred they beat Mike Moore.
- 22:53Here comes the 1-0 on the way now. The curve strike and that's a good Langston breaking ball. One ball and one strike.
- 23:02Texas beating Toronto 11-5. The Rangers had a 10-0 lead at the end of two in that ball game.
- 23:111-1 pitch. Now fastball. Swung on and a ground ball hit right to Ray at second base. It'll take him to his right knee to glove it and throw him out.
- 23:18One-two-three Mariner second inning. No runs. No hits. No errors and nobody left.
- 23:24It'll be Bichette, Claudel Washington and Lance Parrish for the Angels in the bottom of the second.
- 23:29One and a half gone. The Mariner's nothing. The California Angels nothing.
- 23:34From Cairo News Radio 71 in Seattle, this is Greg Herschold with a Mariner Newsbreak.
- 23:42A truck driver was killed this afternoon when his semi smashed into the side wall of the I-90 East Channel Bridge, sending the cab, the engine and the transmission plummeting over the side.
- 23:52Bob Bastido was one of those amazed that nobody else was hit.
- 23:55I don't know how he missed it. There was lots of traffic and he was in the far lane.
- 23:59You can see by the skid marks how he almost hit that wall perpendicular.
- 24:03He and his wife were right behind the truck. A lockdown continues at a section of the Clallam Bay Correction Center tonight where four guards were slightly injured.
- 24:11This afternoon in a disturbance with about 60 prisoners, the continuing threat to the federal judge may seize control of the overcrowded King County Jail,
- 24:20spurred the county council to call two crisis meetings of mayors and police chiefs from throughout the county.
- 24:26Our unit Mount Baker Village Apartment Complex was reopened and showered with praise today by elected officials.
- 24:32Let's say the eight million dollars in public money was well spent and will serve the low income residents for many years.
- 24:38The weather forecast for the Puget Sound area, mostly cloudy tonight, a 60 percent chance of showers, a few thunder showers tapering off later in the evening.
- 24:46Lows around 45. Tomorrow morning low clouds, a 20 percent chance of a shower, partly sunny in the afternoon and a high near 60.
- 24:53Friday, mostly sunny and a high temperature near 65.
- 24:58I'm Greg Herschel, Kyro News, Radio 71. Now back to the ballgame.
- 25:05Well, before we tell you about the Angel Try at the bottom of the second, let's pause along our fast radio network.
- 25:10This is the Mayors Radio Network.
- 25:15How would you like to see an M's game from the press box? How about a trip to Toronto to see the M's play the Blue Jays?

- 25:25Be listening April 12th from 7 to 10. You're on K.I.R.O. Seattle.
- 25:32Dante Bechet playing left field at the Sibning had a home run last night.
- 25:37We'll start it off for California here in the second. He is two for eight in the first two games of this series.
- 25:42Harry Canson's pitch to him a fastball strike at the knees. Oh, and one the count.
- 25:49Baltimore is at Kansas City tonight after an off day yesterday in Kansas City leading the Birch 2-1 in the seventh.
- 25:55The pitch, Bechet, bounce the ball down the third baseline, but it catches the cut of the grass and kicks off into foul territory.
- 26:01And they have the right idea because Edgar Martinez was 20 feet behind the bag at third.
- 26:06He gets it on the grass. He's got a base hit.
- 26:09But it hit the cut of the grass and then made a quick U-turn way into foul territory.
- 26:14Oh, and two the count on Bechet.

- 26:44Harry Canson working from the center of the rubber into the wind and the O2 pitch on the way now.
- 26:48Fastball foul straight back and that will find its way upstairs.
- 26:53Nationally, the Mets 3-0 over the Pittsburghs today playing Viola over John Smilett.
- 26:59Montreal beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 in the first of a doubleheader down in Atlanta.
- 27:06The Giants shutting out the Braves 8-0 and in the night gap, Atlanta leading 4-1 in the eighth.
- 27:12The pitch to Bechet swung on, ground ball, pulled foul on the grass down the third baseline.
- 27:18Cincinnati is at Houston tonight and the Reds shutting out Houston 5-0 in the eighth.
- 27:25The Dodgers and San Diego in their third meeting of the year are scoreless.
- 27:30In the third inning, the Dodgers winning their opener up here, a solo game, and then last night San Diego's opener.
- 27:39Here comes the wind and the O2 pitch to Dante Bechet and the fastball tap to the right side.
- 27:43O'Brien has the hot second hop, stays right with it, and runs to the bag in plenty of time.
- 27:50One down. Here is Claudel Washington 0-4 in the opener.
- 27:55It's not the way last night.
- 27:57Against the left-hander, Randy Johnson.
- 28:01Bankette against Sanderson Friday.
- 28:05A run against Dave Stewart on Saturday and then Brian Holman and Bob Welch on Sunday afternoon and then the Twins come in for career.
- 28:16Here's the wind and Eric's pitch swung on and a high-five all hit into deep center field.
- 28:20Grippy going back. He's got the room. He's on the track and about 375 feet away. Makes the catch.
- 28:28Two away.
- 28:31And my experience, he was 1-6 in the first two games.
- 28:35We'll be there.
- 28:40Bobby Kanop, a slick feeling second baseman if there ever was one.
- 28:45In the early years of this franchise, he and Jim Pragosi teamed up to make an exciting double-play combination.
- 28:50Kanop is coaching over at first base.
- 28:53Here comes the line, the pitch to Parish now. Strike across the letters, 0-1.
- 28:58Lance Parish just looks like a catcher. I mean, broad-shouldered.
- 29:03He's not going to chase Cary Grant out for any handsome title in the 0-1 pitch.
- 29:10Breaking ball outside. It doesn't mean to say he's grotesque, right?
- 29:13Probably because he is not. But I mean, he just looks like a catcher, doesn't he?
- 29:17Sure does. And I'll tell you what, there wasn't anybody much better than Lance Parish with the Tigers back in the early 80s,
- 29:22averaging 30 home runs a year for about four or five years.
- 29:241-1 pitch has hit the right field, and Jeffrey Leonard does over there into the corner, but he cannot get to it.
- 29:30It's just foul by about four or five feet, and it almost wrapped around that foul ball, and it would have been a home run.
- 29:39A ball and two strikes to count on Lance Parish.
- 29:43Jeffrey still reacquainting himself with right field. After not having played right field since 1984 with the San Francisco Giants.
- 29:53We hope that Mickey Brantley, who was listening tonight, is coming along fine, and Omar Vizquel.
- 30:01It'll be good to see the two Mariners when we get home. A workout tomorrow afternoon.
- 30:07One ball and two strikes on Parish. Here comes the wind and the 1-2 pitch on the way in the curve.
- 30:15Oh, just missed inside and low. Two balls and two strikes.
- 30:27Angels wear red shoes. 2-2 pitch down by Hanson. The fastball just off the inside corner.
- 30:36And an appeal made, and Mark Johnson, the first place on Parish, says, uh-uh, he did not go around.
- 30:41Jack Howell, who has been suffering from a sprained ankle, is on deck.
- 30:52Now the wind and the 3-2 pitch on the way to Parish. The fastball swung on and lined into right field.
- 30:57Coming over Jeffrey Leonard. He'll have to play it on a hop.
- 31:00We have the first base hit of the ball game. That might Parish the line, drive the right.
- 31:05And on the way, here comes Howell. Jack last year hitting.228 for the Angels.
- 31:13He hit 20 home runs and 52 RVIs. The Angels lived by the long ball last year,
- 31:20and they are starting out the decade of the 90s, living by the long ball,
- 31:26with four home runs in the first two games, three of them last night.
- 31:31They hit the league with 145 home runs last year. The stretch of the pitch to Jack Howell now.
- 31:35Fastball slice Howell down the left field line. Way back, 35 rows or so into the corner.
- 31:440-2. 0-1, I beg your pardon. The ball's one strike, two hops.
- 31:55Eric Hansen is ready. And the 0-1 pitch now. High, one ball and one strike.
- 32:01Eric Hansen, with the runner on, uses that slip step. He just kind of slides down
- 32:09that left foot to the front of the mound to keep that runner close over at first base.
- 32:14O'Brien playing behind Parish at first. The 1-1 pitch, and it's a curved strike.
- 32:19Call one and two to count. Moose Stubing, college basketball referee during the off season,
- 32:29is coaching over at third base. Now the stretch, the 1-2 pitch on the way.
- 32:35The curve swung on and fouls just into and out of the glove of catcher Dave Dallis.
- 32:40Comes to rest on the emerald green grass behind home plate.
- 32:46I'll tell you, this place is manicured beautifully for the start of the campaign.
- 32:51Hansen requests a new baseball, gets one from...
- 32:57Dallis straight away and left. Grippy, deep, straightaway center.
- 33:00Jeffrey Leonard, deep, straightaway right.
- 33:04The ball and two strikes on Jack Owl. Here comes the stretch.
- 33:08The 1-2 pitch to Howell down the fastball high and inside, ball two. Two balls and two strikes.
- 33:15Howell been wheeling that bat around a couple of practice strokes.
- 33:29Hansen to check. Parish, the 2-2 pitch to Jack. Curve swung on, little blooper down the right field line.
- 33:34That's going to drop for a base hit. Excavated, heading to third base is Parish.
- 33:38Taking it out Leonard. They will hold Parish at third on a bloop double off the end of the back by Jack Owl.
- 33:44And that will bring up Martin McLemore.
- 33:51Somewhat similar to some of the base hits, the Angels got last night a front knackered.
- 33:56He broke about three bats, gave up a couple of runs.
- 34:01Martin McLemore is 1-for-6 in the first two games.
- 34:12So the Angels threaten here with two away.
- 34:16First base open, Devon White.
- 34:20The leadoff man is on deck. And on the grass at third is Edgar Martinez.
- 34:25Barry Canson is set.
- 34:28Here it comes to McLemore, fastball, swung on, and a fly ball hit the left field. Should be caught.
- 34:32Henry Cotto is there. He's got it. And that will end the California threat in the second.
- 34:38No runs for the Angels. A couple of hits. Two men are left.
- 34:43As we go to the third it will be Valley, Giles, and Reynolds for the ends.
- 34:47The Mariners and the Angels at the end of two, no score.
- 34:51With Easter coming up it's time for a visit from the Easter cow.

- 35:54You know as a sports announcer you can get pretty wrapped up in the game you're covering.
- 35:57To be a good one though you have to control what you say and how you sound over the air.
- 36:02Of course control isn't just important for sports announcers.

- 36:20First question of mission time for 1979, in our day 17, 1989. Dave Nehouse with Rick Riz, Kevin Kremen at Anaheim Stadium in home.
- 36:30And we'll see you on Friday night, a great match up tonight between Mark Langston making his angel debut after signing that hefty 16 million dollar five year contract.
- 36:40Eric Hampton pitching for the M's and we have no score. And we move to the third for the play. Here's Rick.
- 36:45Thank you Dave. Bleeding it off for the Mariners catcher Dave Valley. He'll be followed by shortstop Brian Giles, then back to the top of the order, second baseman Harold Reynolds.
- 36:54Mark Langston, as he usually does, that's the pitching plate, the rubber with his glove looks around at his defense behind him.
- 37:02Before he gets ready to face catcher Dave Valley. Mariners still looking for their first base hit.
- 37:08Off of Mark, here's the pitch on the way and it's a breaking ball that's high outside, ball one.
- 37:13Langston, a power pitcher, good fastball, that great slider, the slow curveball and the straight change.
- 37:20And if he starts to settle inside into a groove, then he can be mighty, mighty tough.
- 37:24Here's the pitch on the way to Valley, swinging a fly ball deep in the right center field. Washington over on the run in front of the track.
- 37:30He's there and makes the catch one away. Valley flies out and here's shortstop Brian Giles.
- 37:37Well fans, by investing as a season ticket holder with the new Seattle Mariners, you receive more benefits than ever.
- 37:43Including the M's first 1990 workout in the Kingdome held exclusively for season ticket holders.

- 37:58So call right now, 343-4600.
- 38:03One out and here's new shortstop Brian Giles, the windup by Langston and a pitch.
- 38:07Fastball is fouled back behind home plate and it's 0-1.
- 38:13Langston, nervous I'm sure in the top of the first inning, making his Angels debut, walked a couple.
- 38:20But got a break when Griffey flew out into a 7-3 double play.
- 38:26Here's the windup and the 0-1 pitch. Slider low and inside, ball one, one ball and one strike.
- 38:31On Giles looking for his first base hit as a Mariner.
- 38:350-2 last night, 0-3 two nights ago and the opener won by the M's 7-4.
- 38:40But Angels came up with a lot of pitching last night to shut out the Mariners 7-0 on a four hitter.
- 38:45The pitch on the way in, it's a strike on the inside corner.
- 38:491-2 on Giles.
- 38:524-5 record with the Mariners last year for Mark Langston.
- 38:56Before the trade to the Expos with Montreale was 12-9 with a 2.39 ERA, the third best in earned run average in the National League.
- 39:04The pitch swing and a foul back by Giles and the count is still 1-2.
- 39:12Finished up the year by losing six of his final seven decisions, but even though he had that 1-6 mark,
- 39:19his earned run average was still down around two as the Expos came unraveled in the final month of the year.
- 39:26Here's the windup and the pitch. Low and inside with another slider, ball two, two balls and two strikes.
- 39:33Mark Langston is on his way to the big leagues back in the spring of 1984, the American League rookie pitcher of the year.
- 39:42When he went 17-10 and he led the American League in strikeouts with 204.
- 39:47Here's the pitch, check swing by Giles and it's low, ball three.
- 39:51Full count, 3-2. Langston leading the American League in strikeouts, three different occasions.
- 39:58In 84, his rookie year in 86, 245 strikeouts and in 87 when he fanned 262.
- 40:08Mark with the sign from Lance Parrish and the payoff pitch to Giles, way upstairs high, ball four.
- 40:13Brian Giles, a one-out walk here in the third already, the third walk given up by Angel pitcher Mark Langston.
- 40:20So three free passes served up by Langston, one on and one away.
- 40:25No score at the top of the third and here's leadoff batter, second baseman Harold Reynolds,
- 40:29who let off the ball game by walking on four straight pitches.
- 40:33Reynolds, a little over four last night, one for nine in the opening series.
- 40:38Tough man to double up, good speed out of the box.
- 40:44Here's the stretch by Langston, the pitch, breaking ball is high, ball one.
- 40:49The outfield straight away for the Angels, Bechet and Lefebvre, white and center, Washington and right.
- 40:57Giles, a lead over at first base held on by Wally Joyner, series tie to one win apiece.
- 41:03Mark ready to throw to first base, diving back safely into the bag goes Brian Giles.
- 41:09Off day tomorrow for the Mariners.
- 41:12The Angels get ready for their home opener on Friday night, April the 13th against the Oakland A's.
- 41:17It's going to be a sellout, so be sure to come out to the ballpark early, throw to first base, diving back just in time.
- 41:23Giles on the snap move to first by Langston, who has a great move to first base and Giles almost picked off by Mark.
- 41:32Langston again from the stretch and now the one will pitch the Reynolds.
- 41:38Outside, ball two, two and oh, so Langston has yet to throw a strike to Harold and his two at bats.
- 41:46Bob Didier coaching down at third base, Rusty Kuntz on the first base side.
- 41:52Langston leans in to get the side from Parrish. Giles the lead at first base.
- 41:57Here's the two hole pitch, breaking ball is in there for a strike and it's two and one.
- 42:02Mark for the spring with California, one and one in the Cactus League, three nine four ERA.
- 42:08It will take a while for all the pitchers to get going in the early part of the year with the short and spring.
- 42:15The stretch and the two one to Reynolds swing and a one hopper out the way at second base.
- 42:18Second for one, McCamoy's relay, double play.
- 42:22And will retire the side, four six three, the double play, hard hit.
- 42:27Right at the second baseman, Johnny Ray, they get Giles at second, they double the Reynolds over at first base.
- 42:33And after two and a half minutes of play, here at Anaheim Stadium, our score, the Mariners nothing and the Angels nothing.
- 42:46For all you Marylander network listeners, Horizon Air offers packages for every weekend homestead.

- 43:02For reservations call your travel agent or Horizon Air.
- 43:06Those scores will go to the bottom of the third here at Anaheim Stadium leading at off center fielder Devon White.
- 43:11In close to third base Edgar Martinez, Hanson's pitch out of way, swing and a miss on the change.
- 43:16Hanson's swinging, Joe in one and White is way out in front of the pitch.
- 43:21Hanson throwing strikes, forty pitches, twenty eight strikes.
- 43:26Here's the 0-1 pitch, fastball up and in, ball one, one ball and one strike.
- 43:30Ron White 0-1, struck out looking on a 1-2 curve ball.
- 43:34Here in the first, White 0-9 in the series.
- 43:38Eric back with a 1-1 pitch, swing and a foul back.
- 43:41Hanson has been out in front of the count in just about every hitter so far in this game.
- 43:46You've got to love the way that he attacks the hitter.
- 43:49He's been out in front throwing strikes, good fastball.
- 43:51The hitters haven't been able to catch up on the fastball.
- 43:54Here's the lineup in the 1-2 pitch. Curve ball swinging, a soft looper into shallow left center field.
- 43:58That drops in a base hit.
- 44:01Wide turn at first by Devon White, up with the ball, Henry Cotto the throw in the second base with Harold Reynolds.
- 44:07Hanson left the breaking ball out over the outside half of the plate and White went the other way with it.
- 44:12And Devon has his first base hit of the series.
- 44:16Here's number three for California. Here's second baseman Johnny Ray.
- 44:20He also struck out in the first inning when Hanson struck out the side.
- 44:24White, Ray and Davis all looking at strike three.
- 44:29In close the third by Tienes, the pitch to Ray, low and outside, ball one.
- 44:36Hanson last year, nine and five with a 3.18 ERA.
- 44:40Started off the season very strong, was four and two with a 2-1-5 render on average in June.
- 44:46Then came the injury, the tendonitis in his shoulder.
- 44:49Here's a stretch in the throw to first base diving back as White.
- 44:52And after that he was sent down in a rehab to Calgary, then came back and pitched with the Canons for a while.
- 44:59He was four and two at Calgary and was outstanding when he came back to the big leagues, stretching another throw to first base.
- 45:06On his return from Calgary, he went five and one the final two months of the year.
- 45:22Five and one with a 2.53 on average time is called.
- 45:25Johnny Ray steps out of the batter's box.
- 45:27Ray went for five last time with a run battered in, two nights ago a home run.
- 45:32White good speed, a lead at first base.
- 45:34The pitch on the way to Ray is high and outside for ball two.
- 45:38And it's two and oh.
- 45:40Devon White last year, 44 stolen bases as Ray again steps out and takes a look down at Moose Dubin coaching over at third base.
- 45:48No score, we are in the bottom of the third.
- 45:52Hanson from the stretch and the two-nothing pitch.
- 45:54Instead, Eric steps off and he looks white back in the bag.
- 45:58Devon stays right there with his lead at first base held on by Pete O'Brien.
- 46:03In field up the middle, double play depth.
- 46:05Eric Reddy, the stretch.
- 46:07And the two-oh pitch is swung on and flied into left center field.
- 46:10Over is Henry Cotto and he makes the easy grab.
- 46:12What a way.
- 46:14Ray is out.
- 46:16White heads out back to first base.
- 46:18And here is Angel first baseman Wally Joyner who walked under three to pitch.
- 46:22And the first inning.
- 46:24Which has to run into Eric's older brother Bob in the lobby of the hotel this afternoon on the way out to the ballpark.
- 46:31Eric grew up in Kinloch, New Jersey.
- 46:34Here's Bob about Eric's little league days.
- 46:36He started off as a third baseman.
- 46:39His mother lied a little bit to get him into little league.
- 46:44Moved back his birthday a month.
- 46:46Moved it up a month so he could play with the eight-year-old kids.
- 46:48Here's a stretch and a throw over the first base to get white back.
- 46:51He was an eight-year-old kid over at third base.
- 46:53He wasn't always in the ballgame.
- 46:55He'd draw circles in the dirt around third base.
- 46:58But he was making up for it.
- 47:00He was the only one on the team that could throw the ball across the diamond to the first baseman.
- 47:03Here's a stretch and another throw to first base.
- 47:06Finally they decided to drive him into a pitcher.
- 47:10And Bob said one, two, three.
- 47:12See a letter. One, two, three. Strike three. One, two, three. Strike three.
- 47:14Became a pitcher.
- 47:16Pitch out of the way to Wally Joyner.
- 47:17High-end side for ball one, one and all.
- 47:21One on, one away for California.
- 47:27Joyner last night, two for four with a run vetted in.
- 47:30Three for eight in the series.
- 47:33Hanson ready.
- 47:34And the one-oh pitch to Joyner.
- 47:35Swing and a miss.
- 47:37Strike one. One ball and one strike.
- 47:46Eric, excellent fastball, but his best pitch is that big, big curveball.
- 47:53Especially tough for the right-handed hitters.
- 47:56White, not that big of a lead up to first base.
- 47:58The stretch and Hanson just a quick step off, again keeping an eye on Devon White.
- 48:06Eric pitched that winter ball this year in Puerto Rico where he was three and two.
- 48:10Stretch and now a move to first base.
- 48:12And that chases White back.
- 48:15He was originally drafted by the Montreal Expos out of high school in June of 83.
- 48:19Went on to college and wait for us.
- 48:22Sign with the Mariners.
- 48:25Here's the stretch and Hanson steps off again.
- 48:27So Devon White.
- 48:31He's taken a little attention away from Eric Hanson, even the bottom of the third.
- 48:35White again a lead to stretch and a pitch.
- 48:37Check swing on the curveball and Joyner takes it inside and low.
- 48:41Ball two, two balls and a strike.
- 48:47Eric already with three strikeouts has walked one.
- 48:53Outfield straight away deep end straight away right field is Jeffrey Leonard.
- 48:57Hanson a check of the runner.
- 48:58He goes, pitch out of the way, swinging a ground ball through the left side of base hit.
- 49:02White heading for third up for the ball.
- 49:03Henry Cotto, the throw to Martinez, not in time.
- 49:06And White is in safely at third on a table in the left field by Wally Joyner.
- 49:12Hit and run, Joyner going the other way.
- 49:14A hard ground ball wide of Edgar Martinez at third base.
- 49:17Edgar was playing in a few steps.
- 49:20And it scoops on through the hole and short.
- 49:23And the Angels have runners out of the corners first and third with only one out.
- 49:27And here's designated hitter, Chilly Davis.
- 49:33Davis all for one, he struck out on a one-two curveball looking at it.
- 49:37He hit him to first.
- 49:39So Eric Hanson will try to work himself out of a jam here in the third.
- 49:43He worked out of trouble two outs in the second when he got Mark McLemore to fly out to Henry Cotto in left field.
- 49:50So the infield is back with one out trying to turn the double play that would get Hanson out of the inning.
- 49:56Davis two for four last night with a long home run to left field.
- 49:59Here's the pitch.
- 50:00Swing at him as he tried to hold up but he went after it, oh and one.
- 50:04Now the breaking ball.
- 50:06On the left field is Dante Vachette.
- 50:09Davis a switch hitter batting from the left side against the right-hander Eric Hanson.
- 50:16Home run for Davis last night came right-handed off left-handed starter Randy Johnson.
- 50:21Eric Reddy and the 0-1 pitch.
- 50:23Fastball is up and in, ball one.
- 50:26One ball and one strike.
- 50:31Eric last year 0-1 against the Angels.
- 50:36Winners get their leads.
- 50:37The 1-1 pitch.
- 50:38Swing and a bouncer to Reynolds at second base.
- 50:40Second for one.
- 50:41Relay by Giles the first.
- 50:43In time for the double play and Eric Hanson gets out of the inning.
- 50:47It was a lazy two-hopper out to Reynolds but they turn it quickly.
- 50:51A great job on the pivot around the bag at second by Brian Giles of 4-6-3.
- 50:57Double play and that's it for the Angels.
- 50:59After three innings of play in California, still no score.
- 51:07The University of Missouri had a communication problem.
- 51:10How to bring together four different campuses and hundreds of different departments.
- 51:15So GTE recommended their Centronet system,
- 51:18which not only gave the university greater capabilities but allowed 75,000 people to communicate a lot better.
- 51:25You see at GTE it's not just communications we offer, it's solutions.
- 51:29GTE, the power is on.
- 51:34It is all in fabric, Nuko.
- 51:40The new Volkswagen Passat is so surprising because it's so considerate.

- 52:32Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis, Missouri.
- 52:37No scores, we're headed to the top of the fourth inning here at Anaheim Stadium. Let's pause for a station identification.
- 52:42This is the Seattle Mariner Radio Network.
- 52:45How would you like to spend a night in the owner's suite in a Mariner game?
- 52:48How does a trip to next year's spring training camp sound?
- 52:50You can bid on any of these items and much more in the Ky Runners Radio 71 Sports Fantasy Auction.
- 52:55It all happens April 12th from 7 to 10 here on K-I-R-O Seattle.
- 53:02Quick double play turned by the Mariners in the bottom of the third.
- 53:04Reynolds got rid of it quickly, good pivot by Brian Giles.
- 53:07No score, top of the fourth.
- 53:09And for the play-by-play, here's Dave.
- 53:11Ken Griffey Jr. will start it off for the Ems here in the fourth.
- 53:13On a hit-and-run, Harold Reynolds was running from first base in the first inning.
- 53:17And Griffey hit a fly ball straight away left of the shed.
- 53:20And Reynolds could not get back to the bag.
- 53:22Here's Langston's delivery. Good fastball, missing a bit low and outside.
- 53:25Ball one. One ball and no strikes.
- 53:27Slick fielding, Harold Reynolds making that double play, which was a tough one.
- 53:31Look easy. He got rid of the ball in a hurry to Brian Giles to save the run.
- 53:35And Giles relayed back to first to a Brian in time.
- 53:37The 1-0 pitch. And the kids send a high pop into straightaway left field.
- 53:41The shed comes under the ball and makes the catch for the out.
- 53:46So on out, and here comes Alvin Davis.
- 53:48Friends, your 1990 Mariners ticket stubs are good for a dollar off a car wash
- 53:53and two dollars off a wash and wax at any Brown Bear Car Wash
- 53:56located throughout the Puget Sound area.
- 54:00Alvin walked on four pitches in the first inning.
- 54:04The Mariners have had baserunners in every inning except the second
- 54:09when Langston retired to side and ordered.
- 54:11However, the Mariners have yet to not have a hit off Mark Langston.
- 54:15The Angels have four off Eric Hanson.
- 54:18Mark swindled the pitch to Alvin.
- 54:20A fastball strike on the outside corner on one.
- 54:25Alvin won for nine to open the season after having a tremendous spring with the bat.
- 54:36Langston winds and marks 0-1 pitch on the way to Alvin.
- 54:39Now the slow curve bends way outside.
- 54:42One ball and one strike.
- 54:44Short stop.
- 54:46Mark Mcmurray coming in to squash a cloud of dirt over there
- 54:50about four or five feet to the left of second base bag as we look at it.
- 54:56Another nice crowd on a delightful evening in Southern California.
- 54:59The 1-1 pitch to Alvin Davis now.
- 55:01The curve strike, hard curve that time.
- 55:05Off the letters, one and two.
- 55:07Jeffrey Leonard will be next.
- 55:19Mark's 1-2 pitch now to Alvin down low and outside.
- 55:22A slider that time, two and two.
- 55:25See you Friday night now, 7-06 at broadcast time.
- 55:28It is a sellout.
- 55:29Get to the Kingdome early.
- 55:31Maybe come down a little earlier and do a little shopping
- 55:34and then come on over and enjoy a great night of baseball.
- 55:37First sellout in Mariners history.
- 55:39The 2-2 pitch to Alvin Davis in the curve high this time for Mark.
- 55:44Ball three, three balls and two strikes.
- 55:48Mark put his cap off and laying that left hand through his blonde hair
- 55:52and puts it back on, tucks the angel cap back on.
- 55:58Polkout of Alvin Davis and a 3-2 pitch by Mark Langston, the fastball.
- 56:02Swung on and fouled back.
- 56:03That will go into the mezzanine section into and out of the hands of a patron.
- 56:08Get an aqua shirt and jeans up to our left and the fan right behind him has the souvenir.
- 56:15Polkout three and two.
- 56:21Langston at 6-2, 190 and again the 3-2 pitch to Davis.
- 56:24The fastball swung on and cap to the right side.
- 56:26Johnny Ray slides over to his right, reaches down the glove, straighten up and join out.
- 56:35Doing well for the M's here in the fourth and Jeffrey Leonard will be the hitter.
- 56:40Leonard at round ball to shortstop, Matt L'Amour in the first.
- 56:47All for one.
- 56:52The man who's hardest hit ball off Mark Langston so far tonight has been Edgar Martinez.
- 56:58Drive into right center field and there's really no danger of that falling in as Devon White caught up with it.
- 57:04Here comes the wide in the pitch, the curve, the hot man, a Steve Rye right up the knees.
- 57:09Going one.
- 57:13So it appears to have found the groove.
- 57:17One strike delivery now by Mark, the curve again, strike two, Carl drops over the outside corner.
- 57:22One inside, one outside and Jeffrey just kind of scratching the side of his face.
- 57:28After that the yellow hammer dropped over and got the black part of the play.
- 57:32Langston kind of a hitch up that belt, waiting for Leonard to settle back in.
- 57:38The 0-2 pitch by Mark Langston now and the fastball overthrown high and outside.
- 57:44One and two.
- 57:49The Angels still very much banged up waiting for Dick Schofield to come off the disabled list.
- 57:56The 1-2 pitch by Langston, the fastball blowing down, swung out and missed.
- 58:01So he just ties one right on by Jeffrey Leonard and for Mark Langston that is his first strikeout.
- 58:07An Angel uniform in the fourth. No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left.
- 58:14It will be for Shep Mardell Washington and Lance Perish for the California Angels in the bottom of the fourth.
- 58:19After three and a half the Mariners nothing, the Angels nothing.
- 58:24And now here's Mr. Chuck Heap, holder of the Northwest's Mr. Wonderful title.
- 58:29Hey, Chuck, what does it take to be Mr. Wonderful?
- 58:32Intelligence, great looks, bravery, honesty, modesty.
- 58:37And how did you happen to enter the contest?
- 58:38I started it.
- 58:39And you're the first winner.
- 58:40You're coincidental.
- 58:41Right.
- 58:42And now I'm going for the Northwest's Mr. Perfection title.
- 58:44Mr. Perfection?
- 58:45It's only open to Mr. Wonderful title holder.
- 58:47Sounds like you're a shoe in.
- 58:48You really think so?
- 58:49Oh yeah.
- 58:50Next week I'm taking my campaign for Mr. Perfection to Seattle and Spokane.
- 58:53Seattle and Spokane?
- 58:54Yes, flying back and forth, shaking babies, kissing hands.
- 58:57Then you'll fly Horizon Spokane Seattle shuttle.
- 58:59Oh my yes, Horizon shuttle.
- 59:00Close to perfection.
- 59:02Like you.
- 59:03Oh that's true.
- 59:04Horizon shuttle.
- 59:05It's the best thing going between Spokane and Seattle.
- 59:06Next to me, of course.
- 59:07Of course.
- 59:08The Horizon shuttle to Spokane features the most jet flights to Spokane every business
- 59:13day.
- 59:14And now you can enjoy a flavorful cup of Starbucks Wyrmé coffee on the Horizon shuttle to Spokane.
- 59:19Be your travel agent or call Horizon Air.
- 59:23Hi, Jim Summers for ValuRite.
- 59:27So here I am flipping through my ValuRite circular.

- 59:52Well, certainly we all want to improve our communities and that's why Farmers Insurance
- 59:59Group of Companies invests in communities all over the nation and why America can depend
- 1:00:04on farmers.
- 1:00:05Dave D. House, Rick Riz, Kevin Kremen at the Big A in Anaheim watching a good duel between
- 1:00:10Mark Langston and Eric Hanson.
- 1:00:12We have no score.
- 1:00:13Dante Bechet, who hit a hard two-hopper right to Pete O'Brien at first base in the second
- 1:00:18inning, starts it off for California.
- 1:00:21Eric Hanson into his wind and the pitch to Bechet and the curve at Dandy right on the
- 1:00:26inside corner of the knees.
- 1:00:28Oh, and one to count.
- 1:00:29Bechet was backing away from that one.
- 1:00:32Bechet two for nine in the series.
- 1:00:35One of them last night's home run.
- 1:00:37The one-strike pitch.
- 1:00:38The fastball ripped off the door but Martinez into shallow left field.
- 1:00:42Giles will go and pick it up and Bechet will hold with a single.
- 1:00:46He's probably going to the hot corner.
- 1:00:47Maybe that ball was smoked right after third baseman.
- 1:00:50He got that base hit for what he did his first time up in the second when he tried to lay
- 1:00:53down a block off both.
- 1:00:55Eric Hanson, Martinez was playing right at the cut of the grass.
- 1:00:58Even if he's still playing back, they'd still have a hard red ball down the third base line,
- 1:01:01but he has a chance if he's playing a lot deeper than he was here in the fourth inning.
- 1:01:05I'll tell you one thing, by getting leather on it, he saved it from being an extra base hit.
- 1:01:09The ball was hit so hard that I think it gets by Cotto into the corner.
- 1:01:13Bechet would have been at second base, but he's at first with nobody down.
- 1:01:16Here comes Claudel Washington.
- 1:01:21Martinez again looking for the double play ball.
- 1:01:23The pitch to Washington, that fastball strike outside corner.
- 1:01:26Oh and one.
- 1:01:27Los Angeles at San Diego tonight.
- 1:01:29Fernando Valenzuela against Andy Bennis.
- 1:01:32The Dodgers and the Padres are scoreless in the bottom half of inning number four.
- 1:01:40The first back to the baggies, LeDonte Bechet.
- 1:01:44Kansas City taking a 2-1 lead into the top of the ninth in Kansas City over Baltimore.
- 1:01:52Mary Canson stretches into one strike pitch now.
- 1:01:55Swing and a miss and a big slow shot.
- 1:01:58A big curve, oh and two.
- 1:02:01Washington way out in front of it.
- 1:02:08Slime Spurridge is on deck.
- 1:02:11Canson set the 0-2 pitch now on the way this time, the fastball high.
- 1:02:17The ball and two strikes.
- 1:02:21Canson lost his only strike against California on April the 7th here in Anaheim.
- 1:02:272-1 to Kirk McCaskill last year.
- 1:02:30He pitched very well.
- 1:02:31One-two pitch on the way and the curve just barely high this time to Claudel Washington.
- 1:02:36Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:02:46Mary Canson a peak over it first and the 2-2 pitch now and the curve a little bit high.
- 1:02:52And Hanson thought he had it.
- 1:02:54Full count.
- 1:02:59With nobody down, the Shep may be going here on a full count.
- 1:03:06Hanson a peak over it Dante and the 3-2 pitch he goes.
- 1:03:10The fastball is outside ball four.
- 1:03:13So California runs it first and second, nobody out here in the fourth.
- 1:03:20Second walk given up by Eric Hanson.
- 1:03:23He got ahead of Washington early and then lost it.
- 1:03:26A base hit to right, a line drive to right in the second inning.
- 1:03:38Pitch is beginning to mount up now on Eric Hanson as he is into the 60s in the fourth with nobody out.
- 1:03:50And it's a turn one double play to get Eric out of a jam in the third inning looking for another ground ball off the bat of Parrish.
- 1:03:59Hanson from his stretch.
- 1:04:01Here comes the delivery on the way to the Angel Catcher.
- 1:04:04He's around the butt, takes the curve and it's a strike call.
- 1:04:07And that was a beauty.
- 1:04:09Parrish was trying to lay down the butt and he was backpedaling as he get out of the way of the pitch.
- 1:04:14He almost fell into the home plate up by Vic Votaggio at a big, big breaking ball by Eric Hanson.
- 1:04:22See if the bun is still on.
- 1:04:33Except the one strike pitch on the way now.
- 1:04:35This time the bun is off and the fastball is taken high by Lions.
- 1:04:39One and one.
- 1:04:41Boston beating Detroit 3-2. Minnesota shuts out open 3-0.
- 1:04:45White Sox, Milwaukee snowed out. New York, Cleveland at Cleveland snowed out.
- 1:04:50Texas beats Toronto 11-5.
- 1:04:54Kansas City beating Baltimore 2-1 in the ninth in Kansas City.
- 1:04:58Here comes a stretch in the one, one on the way now.
- 1:05:00Here she comes in the curve.
- 1:05:02Little high outside, ball two, two and one.
- 1:05:17Hanson has thrown 64 pitches.
- 1:05:19Mark Langston in his four innings so far has thrown 54 pitches.
- 1:05:25Hanson again his stretch.
- 1:05:27The 2-1 pitch on the way to perish down. This time the fastball fouls straight back upon the netting behind home plate.
- 1:05:36Now it evens it.
- 1:05:37Looses two balls and two strikes.
- 1:05:39Jack Howell, the left-handed batting third baseman is the man drew up next.
- 1:05:43National League finals.
- 1:05:45Monterey Aubry to Cardinal 6-4.
- 1:05:47The Giants and Atlanta split two. Eight nothing Giants in the first four, three Braves in the second.
- 1:05:54Philadelphia, Chicago snowed out.
- 1:05:56Cincinnati shuts out Houston five nothing.
- 1:05:59Now the stretch.
- 1:06:00Ball two, two pitch on the way and the breaking ball just inside and he's gone all the way three and two.
- 1:06:09Hanson's got to come in with a strike here or he's mired in mud.
- 1:06:14He would have the bases loaded and no potty out.
- 1:06:21Hanson again the stare down to David Galley.
- 1:06:26Eric is set.
- 1:06:27And the three-two pitch on the way and the fastball swung on and trickled down the third baseman to Martinez and it goes under his glove.
- 1:06:34And it's back to Bichow and they take the runner for a quarter one.
- 1:06:38Rather Dante was shut out.
- 1:06:40He ran by the bag.
- 1:06:42The ball went right under the glove of Edgar Martinez.
- 1:06:46Martinez then was in no man's land.
- 1:06:49Lo and behold, Brian Giles picks the ball up and takes Dante Bichette rounding the bag at third and now a double play gets him out of a jam.
- 1:06:57Holy smoke.
- 1:06:58You talk about getting a break.
- 1:07:00Martinez overrunning the ball.
- 1:07:02I don't know where Bichette is going because he's got to know that Giles is going to be able to get there backing up on the play.
- 1:07:08The ball wasn't hit all that high, but Bichette overrunning the bag and he can't get back in time.
- 1:07:14Giles is there just to round to the bag to block him to get the out of Bichette.
- 1:07:17What a break.
- 1:07:19An error on Edgar Martinez.
- 1:07:21Runners at first and second one down and here is Jack Howell, the pitch to Howell and the curve swung on.
- 1:07:27Double play ball hit to Reynolds.
- 1:07:28He bottles it, dives on it and the force out is made at second base.
- 1:07:33He blew the double play, but then he was laying on the bag at second and the force out is made at second base by Lance Perry.
- 1:07:41Weird, weird, whole moon night.
- 1:07:44Oh man, that ball had a lot of spin or something, but Reynolds could not come up with the ball.
- 1:07:48Double play ball.
- 1:07:50He really didn't care about the man coming down the line, Perry as far as getting hurt.
- 1:07:54All he wanted to do was grab the ball and with his back legs try somehow to reach second base to get the force on Perry coming down the line.
- 1:08:02That's what he did.
- 1:08:03It has been a strange inning defensively.
- 1:08:05Well, the Mariners should be out of it.
- 1:08:07I mean, you couldn't hit a fun go any better to get a double play ball to Reynolds.
- 1:08:11He just flat barbed the ball.
- 1:08:13But then he smothered it, got it in his glove and got that back foot on the bag at second to get the force out on Perry.
- 1:08:20Here's Mark McLemore taking the curve for a strike on the inside corner.
- 1:08:240-1.
- 1:08:25Well, this is the weirdest inning we have seen so far in the young campaign.
- 1:08:31Angels at first and third to stretch.
- 1:08:34The 0-1 pitch on the way now.
- 1:08:36Fast ball just inside.
- 1:08:38Mark McLemore, one ball and one strike.
- 1:08:42A ball that goes under the glove by Tinez, picked up by Giles.
- 1:08:47He tags Bechet.
- 1:08:48Sure double play ball.
- 1:08:50Reynolds bobbles it but smothers it and taps the bag.
- 1:08:53And time call.
- 1:08:54Just as Hanson went into the line, he was almost delivering.
- 1:08:58And it was granted by the home plate up our big ball, Chargio, as Mark McLemore was stepping away.
- 1:09:05And Eric very awkwardly kind of fell off the mound.
- 1:09:10You're that far through in your delivery, you usually don't get time call.
- 1:09:14That's amazing that McLemore was able to get time from the home plate up our Patagio.
- 1:09:19One ball and one strike.
- 1:09:21Here is the stretch.
- 1:09:22The 1-1 touch on the way to Mack.
- 1:09:23And it's hit off the head of the bat foul behind home plate.
- 1:09:26A ball and two strikes.
- 1:09:35Guadalupe Washington standing over at third base.
- 1:09:37Jack Howell is over at first.
- 1:09:40And Hanson trying to dodge a bullet here in the fourth.
- 1:09:45He has to count his way one and two.
- 1:09:47The one-two pitch to McLemore.
- 1:09:49Now the fastball swagger on and Biston County goes.
- 1:09:52High, hard, red heat.
- 1:09:54That he fans Mark McLemore.
- 1:09:56What an inning.
- 1:09:59So that is the fourth strikeout for Mr. Eric Hanson.
- 1:10:03No runs in the fourth.
- 1:10:06One hit.
- 1:10:08One error.
- 1:10:09And two angels are left.
- 1:10:12Oh my, as we go to the fifth, the ball is nothing and the angels nothing.
- 1:10:18Most of us have the same sort of uneasy truths with money that we have with death.
- 1:10:23We think about it, but only when we absolutely have to.
- 1:10:26And even then, only superficially.
- 1:10:28I think subconsciously we're afraid that if we think about money too much it will become a problem.
- 1:10:32So instead of making thoughtful decisions about our money, we tend to make quick ones.
- 1:10:36For instance, say you're buying a car.
- 1:10:38A guy says, just sign here and you can drive off now.
- 1:10:41You won't have to think about it anymore.
- 1:10:43So you do it.
- 1:10:45Now here's where the ad part puts into all this philosophy.
- 1:10:47Pacific First wanted to tell you that you could have gotten that car just as easily with one of their home equity loans.
- 1:10:53And not only could your interest have been lower, it could have been tax deductible too.
- 1:10:56I bet you can handle that.
- 1:10:58You know, you probably work on your relationship with your parents and your friends and your lovers.
- 1:11:02Maybe it's time you started working on your relationship with money.

- 1:11:17Why is Hall of Famer Mickey Matalofan of Kuppenheimer Men's Clothings?
- 1:11:22Let's just say I know a winner when I see one.
- 1:11:24Kuppenheimer makes an incredible lineup of fine quality suits, sports coats, and slacks.
- 1:11:29And since they sell them only in their own stores, they struck out that middleman and passed the savings on to me.
- 1:11:35Kuppenheimer Men's Clotheers, America's number one value clotheer for men.
- 1:11:40Kuppenheimer, Seattle, Bellevue, Tequila, Tacoma, Linwood, Northgate, and the Kitsap Mall in Silverdale.
- 1:11:45Well, it's been quite a start to 1990, hasn't it?
- 1:11:54I'm Dave Niehaus along with Rick Rez and Kevin Reven here at Anaheim Stadium.
- 1:11:58We have just seen a very, very weird bottom half of the fourth inning as Eric Hanson wiggles out of a big, big jam.
- 1:12:05He had runners at first and second and nobody out.
- 1:12:09And then Lance Parish on a 3-2 pitch and a ground ball down to third just trickled off the head of the bat.
- 1:12:14Here comes the wind and a pitch down to Peter Bryan leading it off.
- 1:12:17And the fastball from Langston misses low ball one. One ball and no strikes.
- 1:12:21But backing up the play, Bryan Giles and Dante Bechet ground at third base and Giles just tapped him on the back for the out.
- 1:12:30Here comes the wind and the one-on-now to Peter Bryan, the fastball cut on and fouled at the plate in the count of one ball and one strike.
- 1:12:41And then Jack Howell, it should have been an easy, a very easy inning ending double play, but Reynolds bobbled it.
- 1:12:49Here comes the wind and the one-one pitch on the way to Hobie and the breaking ball down low and off the glove of the catcher.
- 1:12:55Lance Parish outside ball two, two balls and one strike.
- 1:12:59But Reynolds somehow smothered the ball, got it in his glove and tapped the bag at second to get the force on Parish.
- 1:13:07And then Hanson, our second wind fan, marked McLemore for the third out.
- 1:13:12The 2-1 pitch to Peter Bryan, the curve strike on the outside corner, 2-2.
- 1:13:21But the pitches are mounting up on Eric Hanson now. He has thrown 72 pitches through four innings.
- 1:13:27Langston winds the 2-2 pitch and the curve swung on and the ground ball hit wider first.
- 1:13:31Joyner has it over hand throw to Langston over his head, backed up by Parish. They go to Langston. O'Brien's caught between first and second.
- 1:13:39O'Brien goes down to the shortstop, marked McLemore. It comes back to Wally Joyner and Joyner tags him out.
- 1:13:45What in the world is happening tonight? Just called bad base running.
- 1:13:49O'Brien made himself a live runner when he made the wide turnover at first base, but a heads-up play by the veteran catcher, Lance Parish.
- 1:13:56You see it all the time, the catcher always backing up on that throw to first base. He was hustling down the line.
- 1:14:02He got the overthrow from Wally Joyner. It was over the top of Mark Langston covering first base on the play.
- 1:14:08They got Peter Bryan in the rundown, so both ballcrops guilty of some bad base running.
- 1:14:14The putout, 3-1, 2-4, 3, and an error on the first baseman. Wally Joyner for overthrowing Mark Langston.
- 1:14:26Boy, this has been something. Here comes the wind and the pitch to Edgar Martinez, swinging a foul straight back.
- 1:14:34So, E-3 and the putout, 3-1, 2-4, 3.
- 1:14:481-2-4-3 after the air. They're going to make the putout 1-2-4-3 and an error on Joyner.
- 1:14:56The pitch to Martinez, high. One ball and one strike. Langston over to cover was over his head and then it was backed up by the catcher.
- 1:15:11Here comes the wind and the 1-1 pitch and Martinez taking high. Ball 2, 2 balls and one strike.
- 1:15:20At any rate, it culminates in and out.
- 1:15:27Okay, here comes the 2-1 pitch on the way and the curve low and inside. Three balls and one strike. What have they finally determined?
- 1:15:36Okay, now the third time around, I think they've got it straight. The putout will go 2-1-6-3 because the air on the throw by Joyner, then it went to the catcher, 2-1-6-3.
- 1:15:46The pitch low and inside, ball 4. So Martinez, the first base, with one down now.
- 1:15:52And Langston has walked his fourth man. And Henry Cato will be the hitter.
- 1:16:01That's correct because Perrish was backing up the high throw. Langston was at the bag at first and he chased O'Brien down to second and flipped the ball to Mark McLemore.
- 1:16:11Then they came right back to Wally Joyner and Joyner applied the tag.
- 1:16:14I got to give Pete some credit. He was trying as hard as he could to hook Joyner at first base to get an interference call, but it didn't work trying to get back to first base.
- 1:16:23Here's Cato now. Mariners still looking for their first hit and the fastball sings in and over at the knees to Henry Cato for a strike, going 1.
- 1:16:38No score, Ian the fifth. Martinez fairly the first. Langston looking at him. Comes into Henry Cato now and the change that's going on and hit off the end of the bat into shallow left field.
- 1:16:53The shut, however, has time to come up under it and make the catch for off number two.
- 1:17:00And David Valley, the hitter. Well friends, by investing as a season ticket holder with the new Seattle Mariners, you receive more benefits than ever, including a private membership in the top of the dome club.
- 1:17:11If you call 343-4600 right now, the new Mariners will provide you with a personal account executive to develop the investment opportunity that is best suited to you.
- 1:17:21So get in on the ground floor and join the fun this summer.
- 1:17:26Two outs, Valley the hitter.
- 1:17:30Stretched by Langston, the pitch on the way to David. Fastball strike across the heart of the plate this time.
- 1:17:37One and one.
- 1:17:44There is a full moon tonight.
- 1:17:49Now the left hander is set and the 0-1 devour on the way. This time the fastball rides high outside.
- 1:17:56One ball and one strike. Langston, every time he delivers, comes down off the pitching circle, goes to his mouth,
- 1:18:04but always puts that left hand on the side of his leg and wipes it off before he gets back up on top.
- 1:18:13Have a look over. Go one-one pitch on the way to Valley. The curve strike and then the one-two.
- 1:18:28Well, he's got a thousand rows from Mark. Now he has to face him.
- 1:18:35Langston is ready. Mark's one-two pitch to Dave Valley. This time the fastball fouls straight back.
- 1:18:45If anybody knows Mark Langston, it's this guy right here, Dave Valley. He's gone him the last six years.
- 1:18:50There's a pretty good idea of what he's going to see in a one-two pitch again. Kansas City hangs on.
- 1:18:55They beat the Baltimore Orioles tonight in the chill of the Orioles Stadium, 2-1. Langston said.
- 1:19:06Harry shot of his crotch his second as Valley has called time and stepped away. The outfield, straight away.
- 1:19:17Langston leans down, has the sign he wants. Here's the one-two pitch on the way now.
- 1:19:22Fastball high strike three called right across the letters and now John with Vic Voltaggio, the home plate umpire.
- 1:19:30Langston's second strikeout. No runs for the M's in the fifth. No hits. One error and one man left in the bottom half.
- 1:19:42The number five, the top of the order. White, gray, and the joiner for California. Four and a half gone. We have no score.
- 1:19:53Beyond signs and noise crowds, country music on the jukebox playing loud. Lonely women and long-legged beers. I think I'll have another bud while I'm here.
- 1:20:13Perfect bar for being good. We're finding this place. We're coming through this, but it's for you.
- 1:20:24Coming through for you. Cold and crisp, clean and refreshing. The one and only taste of the game of games.

- 1:21:32You can join Wayne Cody, Jack Morton, and Dick Creel as they auction off some quality sports items.
- 1:21:37And all the proceeds will go to help fund the instruction of the Martin Luther King Memorial that is being built in Seattle. That's tomorrow night, 7 to 10 on Cairo News Radio 71.
- 1:21:46Dave E. House along with Rick Riz and Kevin Kremen enjoying a delightful evening in Southern California. A weird, wonderful ballgame so far that is scoreless through four and a half.
- 1:21:57The top of the California Angel order now, Devo White. Devon White with his first hit of the year.
- 1:22:02Dropped a soft line drive into left field in the third. Off right hander, Eric Hanson.
- 1:22:07Here comes the big guys, Wyand and Hanson Spitz. Fastball swung on, popped back out of play into the upper desk.
- 1:22:150-1. Nice crowd on hand tonight. The Angels have sold over 18,000 season tickets this year.
- 1:22:28Now the Wyand-Biery can make 0-1 pitch on the way. There's a drag butt up the first baseline. The girls foul. People fly in picking it up.
- 1:22:370-1. On two, beg your pardon. No balls and two strikes. Note from Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, Andy Venice, who impressed us so much.
- 1:22:48The kid from the University of Evansville, number one draft choice of the San Diego Padres, has a no-hitter through five innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight.
- 1:23:03Two strikes to count on Devon White.
- 1:23:09Now the Wyand and the 0-2 pitch on the way to Devo. This time the fastball fouls straight back off the hands.
- 1:23:16Still two strikes.
- 1:23:27Five hits for California. No runs, no hits for the Mariners. The curve fouled at the play.
- 1:23:33A couple Seattle guys want to say hello to folks back in Seattle, which Franklin and Dave Carmen, Rich's dad, Gary works for Cairo so we know that he is listening.
- 1:23:43They're having a great time watching the ballgame tonight.
- 1:23:50Now the right handers Wyand and Hanson's 0-2 pitch and it's swung on and it's missed. It gets behind Dolly and quickly hustling up the bag.
- 1:23:58The first base is Devon White. He's going to be safe. It was a breaking ball in the dirt and Dolly could not come up with it.
- 1:24:04That will go as a strikeout for Eric Hanson and a wild pitch. Breaking ball in the dirt. That big bender.
- 1:24:11White tried to hold up on the swing but it went after for strike three but it got too far behind Dave Valley and White with good speed plenty of time to get the first.
- 1:24:18And let's pause for station identification. This is the Mariners. Radio network.
- 1:24:22How would you like to see a Mariner game from the press box? How about a night in the owner's suite?
- 1:24:26These are just some of the items up for bid in the Cairo News, Radio 71 Sports Fantasy Auction.
- 1:24:31Mark your calendar for April 12th, 7 to 10 and be listening to K-I-R-O Seattle.
- 1:24:39Well here's Johnny Ray now batting from the left hand side. Ray around the butt and the pitch out called for by Dave Valley.
- 1:24:46And not going anywhere. That first base to Vaughn White. One ball and no strikes.
- 1:24:51One run will be a premium the way these two guys are throwing in this ball game.
- 1:24:59Now Hanson is set. The 1-0 pitch on the way to Ray. He punched down the third base line.
- 1:25:03Edgar Martinez kicks it up fair hand and throws the first. Depeat O'Brien. The sacrifice is successful.
- 1:25:10Five-three on the sack. So White in a scoring position with one down in the fifth and that will bring up Wally Joyner.
- 1:25:19Joyner has walked. But he is single.
- 1:25:25On a hit and run in the third inning with Devo White taking off, Joyner single into the hole and set White to third base.
- 1:25:34But then the slick double play engineered by Harold Reynolds on a slow tapper hit by Chilly Davis and Hanson was out of trouble.
- 1:25:43Larry Canson in the ball game has not retired.
- 1:25:49The Angels 1-2-3 in an inning but there he is with a zero still up on the board.
- 1:25:54Here comes the stretch and the pitch to Wally Joyner on the way that curve went outside.
- 1:25:59One ball and no strikes.
- 1:26:07A lot of work here for Mr. Hanson. The numbers three and four hitters. Here comes the stretch and the 1-0 on the way now to Wally.
- 1:26:13The fast ball. Two balls and no strikes. And the advantage goes to the hitter right now, two and O.
- 1:26:25And they're going to take the bat out of his hands and set up the possibility of a double play. They will give him ball three and ball four.
- 1:26:34An intentional walk. And that will be the third walk given up by Larry Canson.
- 1:26:39But you've got Chilly Davis switch hitter.
- 1:26:43Still got to look at a left-handed bat before you get down to Dante Bechet, a right-handed bat.
- 1:26:53Why is it second? Joyner is it first?
- 1:26:57The Angels trying to break through here in the fifth. A big threat in the fourth.
- 1:27:04But they couldn't do it.
- 1:27:08Wally back down behind the plate, throwing out the signs and Larry Canson is set.
- 1:27:13The right-hander's pitch on the way now. Swung on. Trickler foul on into the, well, the dugout along the first baseline.
- 1:27:22Or one.
- 1:27:25Canson, before long, should be showing some signs of wear and tear as he is into the 80s with his pitches here in the fifth.
- 1:27:38Now the right-hander is set. The 0-1 on the way now to Chilly. Pass ball just high. One ball and one strike.
- 1:27:59Canson's 1-1 pitch instead is a spin around. No throw back to second base. Devon White just a half a step back closer to the bag. Neither Giles nor Reynolds went back to cover.
- 1:28:15Canson with the 1-1 pitch on the way, a double check to the runner at second and the curve swing and a miss. One ball and two strikes and that was a major league yucker.
- 1:28:33Big, big man to get out right here, Chilly Davis.
- 1:28:37White is walking lead down at second. Joiner away from first, playing deep behind the bag at first.
- 1:28:46Time call by Chilly Davis as Hanson takes too much time for him.
- 1:28:51Chilly tapping first that left red shoe, then the right red shoe more nervously than anything else.
- 1:28:58He has a squared stance batting from the left-hand side.
- 1:29:01Harry Canson is ready. The 1-2. Here she comes on the way to Chilly now this time the curve ball just inside and low.
- 1:29:102-2 on Chilly. Davis last year, 90 runs driven across. Got a fine year with 22 home runs. A 271 average. Hanson again set.
- 1:29:24And the 2-2 pitch on the way. White is going to third. The curve strike three. Carl trying to save the third. Don't throw down there.
- 1:29:31But Chilly Davis rung up by Vic Voltage on a great breaking ball. Stolen base for Devon Wright.
- 1:29:40Strikeout number six for Harry Canson.
- 1:29:46Number five is out there at third base 90 feet away.
- 1:29:50Mike Paul, the Mariner pitching coach, out to say something to Harry Canson about working to Dante Bechet.
- 1:29:58Boy, what a breaking ball that was to strikeout Chilly Davis. He was helpless standing there at the plate.
- 1:30:04Looking at that signature of Mr. Harry Canson, the great yellow hammer, that great tight curve ball.
- 1:30:14All is at his save. How he stays out there and says something more to Harry Canson who is breaking his cap off and walked out on the grass trying to rub a wrinkle into the baseball.
- 1:30:26Bechet with a base hit in the fourth.
- 1:30:30A high ground ball that went off the glove of Edgar Martinez. I mean it was a rocket that went into a shallow left field.
- 1:30:37Here comes the stretch down by Harry Canson that fits to Dante Bechet. The curve swing and a miss. And I'm telling you he almost crux screwed himself into the ground.
- 1:30:46On that breaking ball he went all the way around like a windmill. 0-1.
- 1:30:55Up down to batter Claudio Washington is on deck.
- 1:30:58The corner is at the corner. It's the stretch. Here comes the 0-1 on the way to Bechet. Now the curve swing on. A little blooper hit in the shallow left field coming up in the first.
- 1:31:07Cacho is there to make the one-handed catch.
- 1:31:09Chilly tires the side and we will still stay. Spoilers.
- 1:31:14Oh, run.
- 1:31:16No hits.
- 1:31:18Dave Nehouse along with Rick Riz, Kevin Kremen. We watched ourselves an interesting, very interesting ball game through five. We still have loose eggs up on the board in the important column, the run column.
- 1:31:30No scores. We go to the sixth again for the play. Here's Rick.
- 1:31:33What an exciting ball game so far. Some strange things have happened on a full moon out here in Southern California. Top of the sixth. That ain't no score. And here's shortstop Brian Giles.
- 1:31:43Mark Langston has yet to give up a base hit. No runs, no hits. One error for the Maroners. No runs, five hits. And one error for California.
- 1:31:52Giles drew a walk back in the third. Here's the pitch on the way. Fastball from Langston is in there for a strike on one.
- 1:32:00Hanson, Eric Hanson, is worked out of a few jams.
- 1:32:04In the second, California left two on. In the fourth, they left two on. And in the fifth, they leave two.
- 1:32:12And in a few steps over to third base, it's Jack Howell to wind up and the 0-1 pitch. Fastball is way outside and high ball one.
- 1:32:21One ball and one strike. Don't forget, opening night at home. This coming Friday night, game time is 730. It will be a sellout so be sure to come early.
- 1:32:30Baseball commissioner, Faye Vinson, will throw out the first pitch. American League president, Dr. Bobby Brown, will also be on hand.
- 1:32:36Here's the pitch to Giles. Slider first strike in the inside corner. The count is now one and two on Giles.
- 1:32:43It will become the first sellout ever in the history of the Seattle Mariners. On Friday night, when the M's play host for the Oakland A's, Scott Sanderson for the A's, it will be Scott Venkett.
- 1:32:52And in the start for the Mariners. We'll see them in the kingdom on Friday night.
- 1:32:58The lineup and the one-two pitch outside ball two on Giles. Two balls and two strikes. The Mariners have had their share of base runners even though they have no hits off of Langston at this point.
- 1:33:08Langston has walked four.
- 1:33:15Marking with the side from catcher Lance Parrish.
- 1:33:18Heads up plays. The lineup and the pitch. Breaking ball is bounced to the right side. Charging the second baseman, Johnny Reyes. Got it. The throw to join here is in time. One out.
- 1:33:29The Mariners are still looking for their first base hit and here's leadoff hitter, second baseman Harold Reynolds. He walked back in the first and he hit into a 4-6-3 double play in the third.
- 1:33:44The series is tied at one win apiece.
- 1:33:51On deck for the Mariners, center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. Great job by both Eric Hanson and Mark Langston tonight. Great duel between the starters.
- 1:33:59Here's the lineup and the pitch on the way to Reynolds. Fastball up high, ball one.
- 1:34:11Right at the cut of the grass at third base, again is Howell. The windup and the one-oh pitch.
- 1:34:16Slider low and inside. Ball two. Two balls and no strikes on Harold.
- 1:34:22Overall Langston last year 16-14 with a 2.74 ERA.
- 1:34:29Came to free agent at the end of last season.
- 1:34:33Here's the windup and the two-nothing pitch. Harold is swung on and popped up into right center field over Devon White. He's there, turns and makes the catch. There are two outs.
- 1:34:43Still nobody on and here's center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. He was the game star two nights ago when he went 4-5 with a big three-run home run to right field.
- 1:34:55Tonight he is all for two. He's flied out into a 7-3 double play in the first inning when Reynolds couldn't get back to first base in time and a fly ball into shallow left field.
- 1:35:04He's also flied out to be shut and left his last time up in the fourth.
- 1:35:08The lineup and the pitch on the way to Griffey is the breaking ball, the inside for ball one.
- 1:35:17Langston a strikeout pitcher throughout his major league career.
- 1:35:228.9 Ks every nine innings that he worked last year led the National League. Breaking ball and there is a strike on the inside corner on Griffey and the counter is now one and one.
- 1:35:33Langston's debut with the California Angels. Mocking horns tonight with Eric Hanson.
- 1:35:39Time is called. Ball gets loose out of the bullpen. It's going to be picked up by right fielder Claude L. Washington.
- 1:35:46So Washington will do the honors, throw the ball up into the crowd, into the bleachers in the right field corner for the souvenir.
- 1:35:53Right hander Mike Witt.
- 1:35:56Taken out of the rotation this year by manager Doug Rader is warming up for California.
- 1:36:01Here's the lineup and the one-one pitch on the way to Griffey. High and inside ball two. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:36:07Last four or five years Witt have been the opening day's pitcher for California.
- 1:36:16Good starters on this ball. A pitch on the way. Breaking ball for a strike on the outside corner and Griffey the counter is even on the kit of two balls and two strikes.
- 1:36:27With the Casgill and Lylelevin. Finley. Langston. Witt is out of the bullpen. Here's the lineup and the two-two pitch. Fastball is topped up out of play on the third base side and the counter is still even.
- 1:36:40Two and two.
- 1:36:50Langston kicks away some dirt on top of the rubber as he looks over the side from catcher Lance Parrish. Griffey's ready. Here's the windup and again the two-two pitch.
- 1:36:59Sliders swing at him. His strike three, the side is retired for Mark Langston. His third strike out this evening. One, two, three. The Mariners in the sixth inning. No runs, no hits.
- 1:37:09No airs and no one left it after five and a half years at Anaheim Stadium. Still the Mariners nothing. The Angels nothing.
- 1:37:19Fans this season all Monday night games will be half price family nights thanks to Safeway and the Seattle P.I.
- 1:37:29Fans can purchase half price tickets in Box Club and view level seating areas through every Monday night Mariner game. Family nights are a great way to bring your entire family out to the ball game at half the price.
- 1:37:39Be sure to get your tickets today. Call Ticketmaster at 628-0888. Still no scores. We go to the bottom of the sixth inning here in Southern California at Anaheim Stadium.
- 1:37:50A new pitcher for the M's. 26 year old rookie right hander. Gary Eve will take over in relief to make his Mariner and American League debut.
- 1:37:58Gary Eve's first outing here in 1990 coming over in the trade from the Atlanta Braves for third baseman Jim Presley. Right fielder Claudio Washington will leave things off for California.
- 1:38:11Here's the pitch on the way and it's high outside for ball one. For Eric Kampson a no decision tonight he went five innings gave up five base hits.
- 1:38:20No runs he walked three one intentionally and struck out six. Pitch on the way and it's a strike on Washington one and one. So as of right now this ball game belongs to Gary Eve.
- 1:38:31Here's the lineup and the right hander's next pitch is swung on and hit foul went out of play in the third base side over the top of the Angel dugout.
- 1:38:37And it's one and two on Claudio who is all for one. He brought deep to center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. into left center field.
- 1:38:44Back in the second and he walked his last time up in the fourth. Gary Eve tremendous numbers last year with the Braves triple A five club at Richmond.
- 1:38:57He was 13 and three with a 2.80 ERA in 23 starts. The lineup in the pitch swinging a bad handled foul out of play in the third base side into the mezzanine level right above the auxiliary scoreboard and it's still one and two on Washington.
- 1:39:11And up with the Braves last year he made three starts he was two and all with Atlanta and had a one point three one ERA.
- 1:39:22During the windup and the one two pitch high and outside ball two two balls two strikes in 20 and two thirds innings with the Braves he gave up only 15 base hits.
- 1:39:34Three runs all earned. Walk 12 and he struck out nine. He's back with a two two to Washington. Swing and a miss strike three.
- 1:39:44So Gary Eve and his Mariner debut strikes out the first batter that he faces veteran right fielder Claude L Washington swinging on a two two pitch.
- 1:39:54One away and here's catcher Lance Parrish. Grant Neckardt made his major league debut last night with a strike out on the first batter that he faced in relief.
- 1:40:07Here's Parrish. Parrish one for two singles in the second inning the windup by Eve the pitch.
- 1:40:14Fastball swing and a miss on one. Parrish hit 238 last year really tailed off in the final two months of the year in August of last season he had only 176 and in September he hit just 219.
- 1:40:28He had 17 home runs and 50 runs banded in. The 0-1 pitch fastball up and in as Parrish has to back away from ball one.
- 1:40:37All in one strike. Good job by Eric Hanson tonight.
- 1:40:45Here's the windup and the 1-1 to Parrish. Check swing did he go. Yes he did the home plate up by Vick Voltaggio makes the call trying to hold up on the breaking ball.
- 1:40:54And he was on in front of the count at one at two.
- 1:40:58And slider on the outside corner Parrish started to give up on it. He went around. On Jack Bird baseman Jack Howell.
- 1:41:08One out nobody on no score bottom of the sixth inning the 1-2 pitch.
- 1:41:12Fastball strike three called on the outside corner Parrish is caught looking at Gary Eve with back to back strikeouts.
- 1:41:20Washington goes down swinging. Parrish goes down looking.
- 1:41:25Two outs for the Angels two strikeouts for Gary Eve and here's third baseman Jack Howell the left handed hitter.
- 1:41:33Right now Mr. Gary Eve very impressive his first time out of the shoot.
- 1:41:39For the Mariners tonight here at the big A. The windup and the pitch on the way to Howell is tied outside.
- 1:41:45Ball one Howell doubled down the right field line in the second and was saved by the fielders choice by Harold Reynolds in the strange strange bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:41:53One pitch on the way over for a strike to the day's off speed pitch and it's one and one.
- 1:42:01Gary doesn't waste any time he gets the sign from Valley. Here's the one one pitch swinging a fly ball deep into the alley left center field.
- 1:42:07On the run Griffey can't get to it it's on the track off the wall.
- 1:42:11Howell heading for second the throw by Griffey into the second base with Harold Reynolds.
- 1:42:15Howell is on his second standing up with a two on double.
- 1:42:20One one pitch Jack Howell takes it the other way into the alley and left center field.
- 1:42:25Well hit ball in between left fielder Henry Cotto with a center fielder Ken Griffey Jr.
- 1:42:30And with a goal is tied the Angels have the go ahead run on its second base and a good ball right here by Dave Valley to go out and quick.
- 1:42:38We'll pep talk with Gary Eve to settle him down as he gets ready to face shortstop Mark McLemore the number nine hitter.
- 1:42:45You don't want to make a mistake with McLemore all for two tonight for McLemore he is one for eight in the series.
- 1:42:52He's wide to left and Hanson struck him out on a one two fastball a high fastball in the fourth inning.
- 1:42:59Eve will look back delivers curve strike on the inside corner on one.
- 1:43:08Gary Leans in works from the stretch Jack Howell the lead out at second base the one pitch fastball and a good one burns it over the inside corner for strike two no balls and two strikes on Mark McLemore.
- 1:43:21Gary doesn't waste any time he jumps out in front of the count.
- 1:43:26Dave Valley throws out the signs Gary ready to stretch a look back in the 0 2 pitch fastball swinging a ground ball to the shortstop Brian Giles he's got it fires to O'Brien in time to get McLemore for out number three.
- 1:43:39In the bottom of the sixth inning for the Angels no runs one hit a double by Howell.
- 1:43:44There were no errors and Jack is left on at second base and after six innings of play here at Anaheim Stadium still the Mariners nothing California nothing.
- 1:43:55Exciting ballgame tonight here in Southern California no scores we enter the top of the seventh inning Mark Langston back up on the hill working out a no hitter no score in the ballgame Alvin Davis will lead it off.
- 1:44:09The designated hitter for the Mariners over one that ideas walk it also brought it out to Johnny Ray at second base first pitch on the way slider strike on the inside corner.
- 1:44:19Oh and one.
- 1:44:23These two guys the closest of friends but right now it's all business between the lines between Mark Langston and Alvin Davis the old one pitch on the way and that's in and over for a strike just like that on to Alvin.
- 1:44:39Davis Leonard and O'Brien for the Mariners here in the top of the seventh inning.
- 1:44:44Langston and with the sign from catcher Lance Parrish the wind up and the old two pitch fastball just misses outside good eye by a D Langston thought he had a strikeout and so to perish a big voltage on Nope.
- 1:44:59All the ball one one ball and two strikes good I fight Davis who walked one every times last year. Excellent discipline here's the line of the one to pitch fastball again high and outside ball to two balls and two strikes on Davis.
- 1:45:17And to strike out.
- 1:45:21Right field Washington Langston back with two two pitch swinging a ground ball pushed to the second baseman Johnny Ray's got at the throw the first and there's one away.
- 1:45:31And with that let's pause for station identification this is the Seattle Mariner Radio Network.

- 1:46:09Langston's first pitch fastball is popped up out of play on the right field side.
- 1:46:19Doesn't like the feel of the new baseball will get a new one from Victor Cascio.
- 1:46:24The crowd tonight here at the big a 38,000 a couple of nights ago.
- 1:46:29We had 23,005 away last night.

- 1:46:45Make a day of it.
- 1:46:47Come on by downtown enjoy the pioneer square area down by the water. Come on out to the ballgame.
- 1:46:56Friday night.
- 1:46:58The Mariners are down the A's in the kingdom game time 735. Here's the old one pitch on the way to Leonard and it's tied outside for ball one one ball and one strike.
- 1:47:11The Mariners are up a sweaty through 85 pitches through six innings. Now he's at 92 for the game.
- 1:47:32No score. We are in the seventh.
- 1:47:38The line up in the one two pitch breaking ball to swung on it popped up to the second baseman Johnny Ray comes in a few steps and he's got it to.
- 1:47:49Walk to Martinez in the fifth inning Langston is retired five six seven in a row and the Mariners have yet to come up with a base it Langston with a no hitter for six and two thirds innings and here's first baseman Pete O'Brien.
- 1:48:09First pitch out of the way breaking ball is inside on O'Brien for ball one.
- 1:48:18He's got it to the right side of the box seat popped up to how the third base in the fall territory right in front of the box seat that was safe on an air by joiner in the fifth inning pitch out of way for a strike on O'Brien one and one to count.
- 1:48:36Very familiar high leg kick both feet on the rubber into the windup and the one one pitch to O'Brien fastball down the middle for his flight to the count is now one and two.
- 1:48:50All in two strikes on deck for the Mariners third baseman Edgar Martinez.
- 1:48:56He's got it to the right side of the box seat that was safe on O'Brien for base ball bad weather around the American League and the National League as well pitch on the way check swing slider is low and outside ball to two balls and two strikes at O'Brien Langston
- 1:49:12has walked for and he has struck out three wild on the early part of the ballgame walk to in the first inning.
- 1:49:19Langston as it goes the first in time to go Brian for our number three one two three for the Mariners in the seventh inning no runs no hits no errors.
- 1:49:29No one left the Baron is still without a base hit and after six and a half innings of play here in Anaheim still the Baron is nothing California nothing
- 1:49:45center field to Devon White will lead off the bottom of the seventh inning for the California Angels still no score in the ballgame Devon White struck out of the first single in the third struck out was safe and a wild pitch in the fifth inning first pitch on the way a strike on one Gary Eve on the mound he came on in relief to start the sixth inning.
- 1:50:06Sonny pitcher Eric Hanson next pitch on the way fastball down and in a check swing the appeal down to Kaiser third base Kaiser clapping his hands said no he didn't go on the count is one and one.
- 1:50:18I'm called White steps out of the batter's box White Ray joiner for California in the seventh inning Gary Eve in the sixth inning looked at four batters he struck out Washington and Barish Powell double then he got Macklemore to ground out swing and a foul off the screen behind
- 1:50:32all play by White and the count is one and two.
- 1:50:36Mark Langston in the meantime of the shutout ballgame is working out a no hitter through his seven innings of work.
- 1:50:43All Belensky cried White Nolan Ryan four times and Mike went and throw no hitters for the California Angels.
- 1:50:50Just to give you a little update on the angel media guy pitch on the way swinging a bouncer into the hole it short taken by Martinez the throw across in time to get White.
- 1:50:59Most play at first base White getting down the line one away and that'll bring up second baseman Johnny Ray took a high second bounces of the hole and short and Martinez and waste any time getting the ball out of his glove and get it on its way across over the Pete O'Brien.
- 1:51:16And remember by investing as a season ticket holder with the new Seattle Mariners you receive more benefits than ever including Alaska Airlines two for one flight coupons here's the pitch to Ray and it's low and outside all one if you call three four three forty six hundred right now.
- 1:51:31The new Mariners will provide you with a personal account executive to develop the investment opportunity best suited to you.
- 1:51:37So get it on the ground floor today. All right now three four three forty six hundred. Here's the pitch outside the Ray ball to two and all the count on Ray who is all for two even the lineup and the two nothing pitch fastball is a five ball three three and all.
- 1:51:58Nothing nothing. We are in the angels half of the seventh inning even a sign from Valley and the three all pitch in there for a strike. Ray take it all the way.
- 1:52:09Three and one. I can't see all that much about Ray defensively at second base but the guy can hit.
- 1:52:15Three hundred four different times here's the pitch on the way swinging a pop about a play on the third base side by Ray. Count is full three and two last year he had two eighty nine with five home runs and sixty two runs batted in.
- 1:52:30His career a four or five inter against the M's. Here's the three to pitch inside ball for Johnny Ray draws the walk and the angels have a runner on one on and one out for first baseman Wally Joyner who has been a boy three times tonight.
- 1:52:50He is one for one he walked in the first single in the third and was intentionally walked by Eric Hansen in the fifth inning after Hansen fell behind two and all. But you have this feeling anyway that Hansen was going to give Joyner a semi intentional walk in that at bat because the angels had white on it second with one out and Joyner wasn't going to see a pitch anyway.
- 1:53:10Here's Wally Joyner who performed last night.
- 1:53:15He's one for nine in the series Gary E.
- 1:53:20Works from the stretch leans in for the sign from Valley Ray.
- 1:53:24Not a base feeling threat over at first base the stretch he stays the pitch on the way and it's outside to join her football one.
- 1:53:31The Mariners turned a big double play behind Eric Hansen and the third.
- 1:53:40They had a chance to turn one in the fourth inning but Reynolds was able to get the force fielders choice for how the force out there should second base in a strange bottom of the fourth inning defensively the stretch of the pitch on the way fastball misses outside ball to Gary E.
- 1:53:56Falls behind a tough hitter and Wally Joyner has two balls and no strikes.
- 1:54:05The deck is designated hitter Chilly Davis. Right now the angels are the meat of the order one on and one away regularly at first.
- 1:54:14He delivers to all swinging a five ball deep in the left field every kind of going back to the wall reaches up and it's off the wall.
- 1:54:22Heading for third his way he will be held there the throw comes in and it is put up by Kyle the double for Wally Joyner and Henry Paddle came ever so close to making the catch deep and straight away left field Wally Joyner going the other way.
- 1:54:38He's the left out of going back to the wall reached up at the last second. It went right above his glove and off the top of the wall for the extra base hit paddle was closing in on the ball that saved the run because Johnny Ray started to hold up between first and second thinking that paddle had a chance to grab it.
- 1:55:00And then wasn't able to score as he tried to put it back in gear. Time is called manager Jim LeFevre goes out to the mound.
- 1:55:10It's hard to see if anybody is warming up on the ball pad at this time. A quick conversation and Jim LeFevre turns around and he makes his way back to the mound his first base dugout.
- 1:55:23Gary Eve is in a jam here in the bottom of the seventh inning. Joyner is on at second. Johnny Ray is on at third one out.
- 1:55:33And the batter is designated hitter Chilly Davis.
- 1:55:3826 year old rookie right hander Gary Eve in a tough tough spot and they will put Chilly Davis aboard with first base and occupied. The Mariners will not pitch to Chilly Davis and set up the double play. Good philosophy right here good strategy.
- 1:55:54Go ahead and put Chilly aboard and work to the right handed bat of left fielder Dante Bechet.
- 1:56:03There is ball three. So Chilly Davis will be served up the free pass there is ball four. Davis tosses the bat away and Chilly is on at first base.
- 1:56:13So the bases are loaded for the angels one out.
- 1:56:17Down to the seventh inning no score and here is Dante Bechet the right hander Eve against the right handed bat. Bechet is one for three. He has grounded out to O'Brien at first. He singles a high smash off the glove of the Mariners at third base.
- 1:56:33He's also flying out the counter in left field. And Gary Eve is looking for a high ground ball right at somebody and is in field.
- 1:56:42He's going to play depth. Giles at short Reynolds at second base. The stretch by Gary Eve. Here's the pitch on the way to Bechet and it's low and outside ball one.
- 1:56:50And now you have the pressure on Eve to throw a strike because there is no room for Bechet.
- 1:56:57On deck for the angels right fielder Claudel Washington. Gary Eve ready. Mariners get their lead. The stretch and the pitch on the way swing and a miss by Bechet.
- 1:57:06The count evens up. Add one ball and one strike on the angel left fielder.
- 1:57:13Bechet spent most of last year at AAA Edmonton where he hit 243 and had 11 home runs and 40 IBI.
- 1:57:22Coming off a good spring the stretch by Eve. And the one one pitch. Check swing strike on the inside corner. It cost him.
- 1:57:30It looks like he went after the fastball hit on the hand. And Gary Eve gets out in front of the count on Dante Bechet. Add one ball and two strikes.
- 1:57:42Gary in with the sign from Ketcher Day Valley. Here's the stretch. And the one two pitch on the way. Throw it outside the slider.
- 1:57:51In the dirt a great block by Ketcher Day Valley. Sliding quickly to his right on both knees to block the pitch. And the count evens on Bechet. Add two balls and two strikes.
- 1:58:03Ray on his third. Joiner the runner at second. Chilly Davis on his first run away. No score. The pitch on the way low and inside.
- 1:58:12Ball three. A full count on Bechet. And now something has to happen right here. Three balls and two strikes. The crowd here at Anaheim Stadium making a lot of noise.
- 1:58:24And Gary Eve will have to come in with a strike. The going head run is only 90 feet away. Big pitch right here. What a ball game tonight.
- 1:58:35He's taking his time. He looks cool and down the stretch. And the three two pitch on the way. Fastball is up and in. Ball four. He watched him.
- 1:58:44And the angels take a one to nothing lead. The bases on his watch that Dante Bechet will force in Johnny Ray from third base.
- 1:58:55Here's Bechet a walk and a run back and in. Davis down at second. Wally Joiner is on his third. Here comes manager Jim Lefebvre out of the dugout.
- 1:59:06Activity down to the bullpen and that is going to be all for Gary Eve tonight.
- 1:59:11Well we just saw Billy Swift get up and start to throw. As mentioned we are blind here. We cannot see down in the bullpen.
- 1:59:17So Swift he has only thrown maybe four or five pitches. I don't know if there is another guy down there like a left hander like a Keith Comstock or a Dennis Powell. We just can't tell.
- 1:59:25But that will be it. And that one run looks mighty large right now as Eve walks in the only run so far of the ball game and it will be Keith Comstock.
- 1:59:36So Comstock was throwing back in the corner where we couldn't see.
- 1:59:40Here in the inning the ground ball by Devon White for the easy out and Johnny Ray was lost. Wally Joiner hit a ball I think that should have been caught.
- 1:59:49Henry Cotto went back to the track and it got right over his glove. I think the ball should have been caught.
- 1:59:54And then the intentional base on balls to really tighten the screws and apply the pressure and on the three two pitch Dante Bechet walks and it forces in Johnny Ray.
- 2:00:04So Comstock is handed the baseball. He will work to the left handed bat of Claudel Washington. While he takes his warm up tosses we'll take this time out.
- 2:00:13The Gays Baking Company is a part of the grand tradition of good living here in the Puget Sound area. When you think 34 year old South Park Keith Comstock will come in he faced only one man in last night's ball game Lance Parrish and he struck him out.
- 2:00:27His job now for the Californians leading it by a score of one to nothing the base is still loaded to try and get Claudel Washington and behind him Lance Parrish.
- 2:00:36But I doubt that he was faced by Lance Parrish because Billy Swift now is throwing in the bullpen way out on left field to the right hander.
- 2:00:43So it is one nothing in favor of California here one out Saxon drunk.
- 2:00:49And Rick Shue will come out of pension for Claudel Washington so Rick Shue a right handed hitter will face the lefty Keith Comstock but remember he has that screwball and he's more effective against the right handed hitters because of that pitch right handed hitters hit only two through off against Comstock.
- 2:01:05The bases are loaded one in one nothing California one out.
- 2:01:09Bottom of the seventh inning pitch on the way swing and a miss on the Scrooge and it's on one Rick Shue getting the start two nights ago and last night with the injury to Jack Powell the bad ankle but how gets the start tonight.
- 2:01:23His first of the year too busy defensively in the first two ball games did a great job last night.
- 2:01:30Rick Shue the former Philly runners their leads the stretch of the pitch by Comstock high and outside with a screwball ball one one ball and one strike for Gary Eve he goes one and a third inning gave up a couple of base hits doubles by how and joiner.
- 2:01:47He walked three one intentionally, and he struck out to infield halfway up the middle.
- 2:01:55One nothing angels Comstock ready and the one one pitch swing and a miss by shoes strike to on shoe one ball and two strikes on the pinch hitter on deck for California catcher Lance Parrish.
- 2:02:11I'm stuck looking for a stop or a hold right here to hold California.
- 2:02:17The third pitcher used tonight by manager Jim Lefevre.
- 2:02:21First run of the game coming here on the seven times by taking some time a lot of time and now time is called by catcher Dave Valley they want to go out and talk things over about halfway between them out and home plate you want to make sure you got your signal
- 2:02:34straight in this situation you don't want to make a mistake.
- 2:02:37While they join on a third chilly Davis on its second dot David shut is the runner on it first base.
- 2:02:44All this happened with one way a walk a double and two more walks.
- 2:02:50Valley back behind home plate pass out the signs.
- 2:02:55I'm stuck ready a check of the runners and the one to pitch playing enemies for strike three, and there are two outs the Scrooge down in a way shoe chased it Valley dropped the ball just off to his right but there's a runner at every base the shoe is out of there and keep
- 2:03:10going. And a tough tough situation strikes out, get a Rick shoe. The bases are loaded now with two outs, the infield can play back down with two down. And here's Lance Parrish one for three for Parrish, he's single to right was safe on a field his choice, and Gary
- 2:03:29struck them out looking in the sixth inning. And now he takes a look at keep Tom stock. The up the illustrator way. Tommy ready here's the pitch low and inside and that bounces a foot out in front of home plate Dave Valley knocks it down with his chest protector.
- 2:03:47Great job by Dave Valley. That is about the eighth time in the series that value is a great job to block the pitch he covers right over it knocks it down keeps the ball out in front of all one on Paris.
- 2:04:01That saves a run.
- 2:04:07One for three last night. Now two for nine in the series, the pitch strike out the outside corner and cops not doing a great job with a screwball on the outside corner to the right handed hitters one and one on Lance Parrish.
- 2:04:24There's a strong right handed hitters six time All Star when it was with the Detroit Tigers. Here's the stretch, have a pitch to Paris playing a high five ball deep down the left field line but he pulls it foul way out of here down the line it had the distance.
- 2:04:41But Parrish was way out in front of the bridge and he exit out of here but foul a one strike to to Paris. I'm stuck out in front of the counter fall into strikes.
- 2:04:58Get their leads. Griffey shaded now toward left center field on its center the stretch by Comstock aside from Valley, and the one to pitch outside ball to two balls and two strikes and this is the pitch right here the Comstock one.
- 2:05:14You don't want to go to three and two with faces loaded and two outs you can start the runners on the full count but right now it's still to it to our parish Comstock ready and the to to on the way just outside ball three.
- 2:05:30Full count of Paris now is three and two missing with a screwball.
- 2:05:46So the three to pit dragon of his strike three. Let's perish with a weak wave on the three to pitch that was down and Comstock great job in relief with a face is loaded.
- 2:06:00He comes on he strikes out Rick shoe the pinch hitter, and then with a base is loaded in two outs. He's right out last parish out of three to pitch, and that's it for California the angels though get one run on one hit no airs and they leave three, and after seven in California,
- 2:06:21it's the angels one, and the Mariners nothing.
- 2:06:27Once again everybody Rick Riz along with Dave Nehouse producer engineer Kevin Kremen what a ballgame we go to the top of the eighth inning a few changes for California Mark Langston working on a no hitter is not in the ballgame tall right hander Mike Witt now working out of the bullpen for the angels will come on in relief here on the eighth inning also a defensive change for the angels.
- 2:06:51There's an acceptable play left field that they be shed moves from left field to play right field for Claude L Washington one nothing angels we go to the eighth.
- 2:06:59And here's Dave and how soon they forget my quit coming in from the bullpen to a chorus of booze here at Anaheim Stadium.
- 2:07:08Mark Langston unbelievable debut with California tonight no hits here is Edgar Martinez and the pitch by winter fastball right down the middle on one my quit one of seven no hitters pitched in angel history and his was not only a no hitter.
- 2:07:25His was a perfect game against the Texas Rangers on closing day September the 30th 1984 the old one pitch on the way now slider low and outside they make the appeal and they get it.
- 2:07:38First base umpire Mark Johnson punched into the air to indicate a strike on Edgar Martinez one run seven hits for the angels and they have stranded a dozen men in this ballgame no runs no hits to stranded for the Mariners the old to pitch
- 2:07:54and the breaking ball down low and outside one ball and two strikes Mark Langston through one pitch shy of 155 strike 44 balls he walked three and he struck out three six six Mike went back with the one two pitch now that's outside breaking ball two balls and two strikes.
- 2:08:15Down that bullpen making about $1.3 million a year.
- 2:08:24They grind under into the wind and that to to pitch to Martinez fastball chapter the right side on two hops and Johnny Ray has it and throws him out.
- 2:08:37The Mariners continue their quest for their first base hit in this ballgame and here comes Greg Riley up to pitch it for Henry Gatto.
- 2:08:54Anyway, the left handed batter.
- 2:08:58Riley.
- 2:09:00One for five.
- 2:09:02In the newborn season.
- 2:09:06Here comes the wind and the pitch on the way to Greg, and he takes it down low and inside for one one ball and no strikes, Max venable now in left field.
- 2:09:15As the chef moves from left to right on white still in center.
- 2:09:20The one oh now to Greg Riley and the breaking ball strike at the knees one ball and one strike.
- 2:09:30Mike what is native of the area.
- 2:09:37Ball and two strikes.
- 2:09:41Last year with the angels a year he'd like to forget nine and 15 with a 4.54.
- 2:09:48Now the wind in the one to pitch to Riley swung on ground ball hit right at Ray, they can do his knees again and he gets up and throws him out by 10 feet.
- 2:10:01And with two down David Valley will be the hitter.
- 2:10:06I remember in the early years of the Mariners Nolan Ryan came close to pitching a no hitter against the Mariners and only a Bobby Stinson base hit in the left field broke that up but that.
- 2:10:21There was no drama to it because it was either in the fourth or fifth inning that scrap iron got the base hit.
- 2:10:27Here's the pitch to foul and the breaking ball strike on the inside corner.
- 2:10:32But Mike with now only four outs away from a combined no hitter with Mark Langston against the Mariners on one account on Dave Valley.
- 2:10:47The one strike pitch by Mike with now the breaking ball low inside one ball and one strike.
- 2:10:53But this limousine leads one nothing.
- 2:10:58For California, the wind in the one one pitch on the way to Val strike a tackle right at the knees on the outside corner of ball and two strikes.
- 2:11:09The ball at Wally Joyner hit that Johnny Ray the third base and Ray subsequently scored on the wall was catchable by Henry Cato but he just couldn't do it.
- 2:11:22One two pitch now by Val and it's one on the ground ball pulled foul down the left field line on the track.
- 2:11:37Brian Giles is down on deck.
- 2:11:40Two outs and nobody on. We are in the eighth.
- 2:11:47The one two pitch to Valley swing and a miss down he goes so through eighth the Mariners do not have a hit.
- 2:11:54So Mike with his first strike out.
- 2:11:58And the fans that are here 25,632 going to hang around to see what happens in the night.
- 2:12:05No runs, no hits, no errors and no body left.
- 2:12:09And as we move into the bottom of the eighth, it'll be Jack Howell, Martin, Mac Lamour and Pivo White, Devon White for California. One nothing, angels.
- 2:12:20Well before we go to the bottom of the eighth, station identification time. This is the Mariners radio network.
- 2:12:25How would you like to spend the night in the owner's suite at a Mariner game? How does a trip to next year's spring training camp sound?

- 2:12:35It all happens April 12th from seven to ten here on Kiro Seattle.
- 2:12:43Not that bad an angel third baseman Jack Howell steps in to lead it off and takes the breaking ball a curve down low and inside from Keith Comstock ball one and
- 2:12:51Tommy right back with a fastball that's in the same spot. Hi, however, and inside.
- 2:12:55Well, two two balls and no strikes.
- 2:12:58So you find tonight a broadcast time at seven or six get out to the yard early now. It's a sellout to help it line foul on the right field line on a.
- 2:13:09Over the shoulder of the ball boy seated down there in the chair and into the stands.
- 2:13:14Turn on how a race of doubles.
- 2:13:18He doubled into right field in the second and in a gap or into left center field and then sixth in it.
- 2:13:24Gary Eve first one came off Eric Hansen who went the first five did not give up a run three walks one intentional and he struck out six.
- 2:13:35I'll write down the knob at a bat.
- 2:13:38Here comes a two one pitch to it and the vendor a little high ball three three and one twenty five thousand six hundred and thirty two out here.
- 2:13:49Want to delightfully me. I'm stuck there's all right today Valley.
- 2:13:54The three one pitch now to how the fastball swung out and popped up to our left over near the dugout of the California Angels and over the dugout back into the stands three and two.
- 2:14:06Well, you might forget the pre use of a car.
- 2:14:09All budget run a car after a free program after five runs with budgets you get two days free in Seattle called six eight two times that's six eight two C.A.R.S.
- 2:14:22Our budget and become a free wheeler.
- 2:14:28The roll count on Jack. I'm static and a lot of time how that bat cocked and the pitch the curve swung out on a fly ball hit off the end of the bat to left field right there is Greg Briney coming in to make the catch by taking over in left field from him.
- 2:14:50Three pinch hit from that one down.
- 2:14:59Mark McLemore, who has fly to luck, struck out and grounded out.
