- 0:00People have an inner commentary and soundtrack going on
- 0:04virtually constantly in their heads.
- 0:07The soundtrack may be a piece of music they heard which keeps
- 0:10repeating in their minds what is colloquially called an earworm.
- 0:16It may also be something of far less enjoyment, such as a
- 0:20constant ringing in the ears, tinnitus that can drive people
- 0:24eventually to distraction, disrupt sleep and rest, and make
- 0:28the individual tired and irritable.
- 0:32With respect to the inner commentary or dialogue, there is
- 0:36an evaluation process that goes on for everything that occurs
- 0:39around 1:00. There are judgments, reactions
- 0:43of anger or jealousy, which are not necessarily expressed
- 0:47outwardly, but which are nevertheless sending thought
- 0:51currents through the brain, perceptible to the mind.
- 0:55Sometimes these thought currents begin to make suggestions for
- 0:59how one should act or what one should do.
- 1:02In some cases, the individual actually begins to listen to
- 1:06these suggestions and to act upon them.
- 1:10In other cases, the individual is able to recognize them as
- 1:14essentially reactive traffic, responsive to the impressions
- 1:18that the senses send to the brain, triggered due to these
- 1:23sensations, and can thus be dismissed as just the running of
- 1:29the brain. For those who have taken up a
- 1:32spiritual sadhna, there's generally a time when they'd
- 1:35learn meditation or practice concentration, mindfulness or
- 1:42creation of Zen mind, which is quiet, aware, receptive but non
- 1:49reactive. They are encouraged to observe
- 1:52these thoughts, but not to let them carry one's attention off.
- 1:57This is a difficult process at first, made easier with regular
- 2:02practice. The sodic is not thereby immune
- 2:06to such thoughts or feelings running through his mind.
- 2:09Ideally, he is able to distance himself from them and observe
- 2:14them without attachment or involvement.
- 2:17However, when there is some obstacle, weakness or failure,
- 2:22the thoughts come, whether in the form of self doubt or a form
- 2:27of skepticism about the path or one's ability to follow it, or
- 2:33in the divine aid. Just as with any other of these
- 2:37various processes, the Sadak is asked to distance himself from
- 2:42them. Sri Robindo adds another method
- 2:46to the tools available to the Sadak in the form of
- 2:49substitution. When thoughts of failure or
- 2:53weakness arise, the sodak is asked to replace them with
- 2:57thoughts of the longer term trajectory and the support of
- 3:01the Divine. One can recall Sri Aurobindo's
- 3:04dictum that he who chooses the infinite has been chosen by the
- 3:09infinite. When we remove the ego
- 3:12personality from the center of this equation, we see that we
- 3:16need simply accept that the Divine has found a readiness in
- 3:20the individual and has chosen him for this path.
- 3:24Thus, the success or failure is not in the individual's hands
- 3:30but in the grip of the Divine. This leads to an attitude of
- 3:34patience, perseverance based on aspiration, and a sense of
- 3:40grateful receptivity. Shiro Bindu observes.
- 3:45Quote the great need in all crises and attacks to refuse to
- 3:50listen to any suggestions, impulses, lures, and to oppose
- 3:56to them all the call of the truth, the imperative beckoning
- 4:01of the light in all doubts and depressions, to say I belong to
- 4:06the Divine. I cannot fail to all suggestions
- 4:10of impurity and unfitness to reply.
- 4:14I am a child of immortality chosen by the Divine.
- 4:17I have but to be true to myself and to Him the victory is sure.
- 4:22Even if I fell, I would rise again to all impulses to serve
- 4:29some smaller ideal to reply. This is the greatest, this is
- 4:33the truth that alone can satisfy the soul within me.
- 4:37I will endure through all tests and tribulations to the very end
- 4:42of the Divine journey. This is what I mean by
- 4:46faithfulness to the Light and the Call.
