Transcript
- 0:00Dud. The sun is shining out a clout in the sky. We wouldn't
- 0:06know because we're so happy inside. Some people on some skis, but we
- 0:14would rather sit on down and talk some movies. We're the evid Indoorsmen.
- 0:20Come listen to our show. We're the evident Indoorsmen at home around the gold
- 0:26where the evidendors Man. We hope you loves, so come on in and
- 0:32stay. We'll do our best to make you smile. Were the indors Man.
- 0:40What is happening? I'm Rob Lundquez book, and we're the evidendoorss.
- 0:46Hello everyone, Hello, what's going on? Buddy? Nothing? Pal,
- 0:50Everything's going perfectly today. How are you man? It's been a good day.
- 0:56It was a beautiful day outside. I got some yard work done.
- 0:59Look at you, good job. I listened to some some podcasts about our
- 1:03Minnesota Timberwolves. This has now become the Timberwolves opening. I'm noticing such a
- 1:08weird roller coaster because we're so like, we're a little bit ahead. So
- 1:12when I edited it's very different than when we talk about it. It's a
- 1:17lot going on. I just listened to the Edge of Tomorrow podcast that we
- 1:23put out and Game five hadn't happened yet. Wow, Game six six hadn't
- 1:30happened, yes, and so we were like sad and thinking everything was done
- 1:36for the Nugget series, and then so much happened after that, so much.
- 1:41But yeah, when we're recording this right now, last night was was
- 1:48Game four of the Western Conference Finals, and the Timberwolves finally won a game.
- 1:53We got one, we got one, we didn't get swept, and
- 1:57I think they might just make histree. I mean, I'm just saying.
- 2:02If I'm a MAVs fan, I'm like, like, if we win this
- 2:07next one at home, I'd be nervous if I were them. Yeah,
- 2:10at least I was thinking about it right like, you know. Yeah.
- 2:15They also didn't have their third best player in the playoffs. That's last night,
- 2:20and I wonder if he'll play the next game though they said he definitely
- 2:24had the chance to. Okay, cool, nice, He kind of needed
- 2:30the back of the head that was nesty. Yeah, it seems is it
- 2:34Derek Lively de third? Isn't it Derek Jones the third? Well? I
- 2:39don't know. Yeah, I thought it was Derek Jones' third. I think
- 2:43it's something Lively. I'm not sure. It is definitely Derek Lively. I
- 2:47just thought he had Oh he's the second. I'm sorry, Derek Lively.
- 2:52Second. Yeah, there was a Roman numeral there, yeah, somewhere.
- 2:57But yeah, anyway, Yeah, so we'll find out. But either way,
- 3:00we'll find easter. We didn't get swept. We didn't get swept.
- 3:04I'm really like, should I go to Game five? But I shouldn't.
- 3:07I shouldn't. Yeah, I'm cheaper tickets. I'm not allowed, but I'm
- 3:14not allowed. No, you can't. They lose, they lose. I'm
- 3:19no longer allowed in the building. So that's fun. The only one I
- 3:23had been to, they won by forty five points, but then they lost
- 3:29game one. Yeah, but if you don't have me there, we might
- 3:31win by twenty at least, right, I don't know, I don't know.
- 3:38I like it. I hope they win. I'd like to just get
- 3:40a little excited. Oh, it would be fun. If they take it
- 3:46to a game seven, I'm gonna be just a wreck. I don't know
- 3:49if my heart can take These games have all been so close. Anyway.
- 3:55I know you guys are big basketball fans, but what you know, we
- 3:59should maybe move along, Rob, Maybe what was the last movie you watched.
- 4:03Last movie I watched was a one that just recently came out. It's
- 4:08called The Reunion. Oh, I don't know anything about it. You heard
- 4:12about this movie, so it's kind of a there was that HBO show.
- 4:17Oh, I really should have looked up the name of it. It's anyway.
- 4:21It's about a high school reunion, as is the name, and there's
- 4:28a huge party and then Shenanigan's into someone is murdered and then it's like a
- 4:34murder mystery kind of thing after that. Oh, I see Billy Magnuson is
- 4:40in it. He was in that same sort of plot for Game Night.
- 4:43I know. It's it's very It's not like an original idea. It's pretty
- 4:46fun though. The cast is pretty great. The dude who plays the Deep
- 4:51is in it, and it's just like how Boys. Yeah, from The
- 4:56Boys, who's who's really fun? And then you got Jamie Chung and little
- 5:00rel Howie who we both love so much, is in it. Yeah,
- 5:02Jilli and Bell, who like is very silly and fun. It's in it.
- 5:08She is silly. You would recognize her. Yeah, if you guys
- 5:10don't know who she is, look her up. You'll definitely recognize her.
- 5:14But yeah, so just a bunch of really funny people are in this,
- 5:16and you know, it's nothing groundbreaking, but it's ninety minutes and it's pretty
- 5:21funny and it's a good time. I really was it on one of the
- 5:25streaming services you saw. I think I rented this one renting lately. I
- 5:31don't know why. Yeah, I don't know cool So I think I rented
- 5:34it. But check it out yourselves. I don't know. I don't know
- 5:38the answer. I don't remember. So yeah, but it was fun.
- 5:42I had a nice time. How about you? What's the last movie you
- 5:45watch? This definitely was not the last one I watched. But I realized
- 5:48I hadn't talked about this when I did watch it, because I had been
- 5:51watching a ton of movies a few months back. But i'd watched a movie
- 5:56called fair Play and I had mentioned it to you. It's on Netflix,
- 6:00and I thought it was really well done. It stars Alden aharn Reich and
- 6:06a woman I wasn't familiar with. Her name is Phoebe Dinovore. I'm not
- 6:11sure how you say your last name, but she is apparently on that Bridgerton
- 6:15show that I know some of our patrons are into we show, didn't we
- 6:20we did weird? But yeah, they're this like power couple that work at
- 6:25a hedge fund, and it deals with their cutthroat business and how it affects
- 6:30their relationship. It's really great acting. It's very intense. There's some triggery
- 6:38things, so maybe read up on that if you're not okay watching everything.
- 6:44But I was very impressed with both of the main actors, and it felt
- 6:51like it went by pretty quickly even though it was like a pretty serious drama.
- 6:57That's cool. Yeah, nice, So if that sounds interesting, check
- 7:01it out. It's been a good year for good year or two for Alden.
- 7:05What's his name again, Aaron Reike, Yeah, Alden Aaron Reich,
- 7:10Yeah, yeah, because he was an Oppenheimer and he was good. That's
- 7:14fun, man. I love it. Yeah. It's on Netflix. Speaking
- 7:18of Netflix, what have you been streaming? So? I streamed this one
- 7:23here. It's called The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. I don't know either
- 7:30of the movies that you you brought up. I'm real crazy. I'm really
- 7:32going for it. I'm really going for it. This has Jim Broadbent in
- 7:36it, and I actually just watched this one this very eve, and this
- 7:43movie kind of knocked my socks off. I thought it was absolutely beautiful.
- 7:48Jim Broadbent, you guys, we'll remember him. He's been in a few
- 7:53things. He was a professorcorn and Harry Potter. What was the other big
- 7:58one that he was in that we've talked to out, I mean Mulan Rouge,
- 8:01but that was. Yes, he's been up for oscars for movies that
- 8:05I didn't see back in the day. But he's pieces, yeah, yeah,
- 8:11he's a big deal. This one is. It's it's an interesting one.
- 8:15He's just kind of an ordinary dude living life. And one day he
- 8:20gets a letter from an old friend and she is sort of going through end
- 8:26of life stuff in hospice, and he decides he's gonna write her a letter
- 8:30back and like walks to the to the post office. It takes place in
- 8:33England, and he's like, I'm just gonna run to the post box and
- 8:37he basically has this like I don't know what I'm gonna do. Uh,
- 8:41this doesn't seem right to send this letter this way, so he he walks
- 8:46to see her basically, so it's a it's like a it's kind of a
- 8:50road trippy movie, but it's more of like a coming of age kind of
- 8:54thing, like think of the like Forest, I just started running, only
- 8:58he starts walking. And it is a beautiful film. I won't tell you
- 9:03any more than that. There's a few twists and turns and things, but
- 9:05overall it's just a really a beautiful, uplifting movie. And Chimp Broadbit's just
- 9:11so good, dude, Like, yeah, he's great, He's phenomenal,
- 9:15and he's so good in this movie. So if you're looking for something you
- 9:18know that is real life and has sad moments but is uplifting in a beautiful
- 9:24way that will also make you cry, check it out. I really liked
- 9:28it a lot. It was really really good. Nice. Yeah, and
- 9:31I think it was on Amazon Prime. I believe the preen. I should
- 9:35really start writing that down. Just go look for it. I don't know
- 9:37to tell you guys, So check it out, all right? How about
- 9:43you, buddy? Have you been streaming things? Yes? I went over
- 9:46to Max and started watching The Jinks Part two. Oh, so tell me
- 9:52everything. I missed The Jinks Part one. I did not. I was
- 9:56all about The Jinks and was watching it every week that it came. Oh,
- 10:00I love it and it was crazy. I actually was watching it with
- 10:03our guest. I remember being with him when we watched the final episode.
- 10:09So that was almost ten years ago now when the Jinx came out. And
- 10:15for people don't know, that's like the Robert Durst millionaire who was suspected of
- 10:18killing several people and kept getting away with it. Is what seemed like what
- 10:24was happening. He had a bunch of money. But I've only seen the
- 10:28first three episodes. I think there's there's either six or eight. I'm not
- 10:33sure. I think it's only six. That's a lot, but it's great.
- 10:39It starts when the last episode of the first season aired and how crazy
- 10:46that ending was. Basically these filmmakers found some really damning evidence and you're like,
- 10:54wow, did he like it was crazy? Whatever? Yeah, so
- 11:00they present him I definitely was steeped in it, right, but I didn't
- 11:03watch it. They present him with the evidence. He then goes to the
- 11:05bathroom, still has his mic on, and like starts talking about it and
- 11:09pretty much incriminates himself. So it's like an insane ending, and it like
- 11:18started the case back up. So that's kind of what so this is like
- 11:22the aftermath of that first season almost pretty much. Oh, that's cool.
- 11:26I wondered what they were going to do for Jinkx too. That's cool.
- 11:31It's really intriguing and compelling, and it's uh, yeah, I'm enjoying how
- 11:39they're actually like the filmmaking part of it as well. Yeah, I bet
- 11:43because I didn't actually I heard what happened, like what is happened, but
- 11:48I don't really remember, so I'm not like looking at it like you're in
- 11:52it. That's great, that's great. Yeah, but bus it's like not
- 11:56a super like this obviously hasn't happened before it became this like cultural phenomenon,
- 12:01and it happened during you know, like in all these things. Like that's
- 12:05pretty that's pretty wild. It's believable that he agreed to do that show in
- 12:11the first place, like he would what an idiot really don't like the EU
- 12:15Brits or or he just wanted to get caught or something. I think he's
- 12:20kind of an ego maniac, right and just wanted to yeah, be like,
- 12:24oh, I can totally get away with it all over again. That's
- 12:28wild. But I'm enjoying it so far and definitely going to be finishing it
- 12:31soon. Cool. Do you think it's worth me watching all of it?
- 12:35I mean, you know the huge end, yeah, the like huge thing,
- 12:39right, So I just so. But there was also a movie about
- 12:43it called like all the Good Things, I think, and it was Kirsten
- 12:48Dunst and Ryan Gosling, and that's kind of why it even really started up
- 12:56again, you know really Yeah, so I'm about to check that out and
- 13:01never can check out all the things? Nice. I love it, well,
- 13:03very cool. What do you think should we do if you plug a
- 13:07roar? Yes? Nice? You guys can piss us as always over on
- 13:11the Twitter machine where we're at Avid Endorsman with a ZI, or you can
- 13:13go to Facebook dot com slash the abt Endorsment. Also we are available on

- 13:22want to hang out and be part of the crew, spot to go in

- 13:31On Patreon, we give them a ton of perks. One of those is
- 13:33getting the shout out here. So I'd like to give a shout out to
- 13:35Marsha Grisiak, Mary Fox and a Nettwalklee, Ruth Kudio Embrosted, Jackie Huston,
- 13:43deb Olk and Noah Flores. You guys, you're wonderful. Thank you
- 13:46for your patronage. Yeah, and another perk we'll give our patrons as an
- 13:52extended version of every episode we put out, we do a top five draft
- 13:54that pertains to the movie we're talking about, and for this one, surprisingly
- 13:58we've never done this before. Our top five favorite acting debuts. Super fun.
- 14:05I don't think there's gonna be any that are like a surprise because you
- 14:11can't really like sneak any in here. Yeah. I did look up a
- 14:13few silly ones, but other than that, it's pretty much just you know,
- 14:18you have your like twenty that is on every list. Yeah, but
- 14:22they're bangers, like really amazing, crazy performances. But there's several of them.
- 14:30I didn't know for sure. Sure, we're there first, so it's
- 14:33gonna be really fun. I can't wait to chat about that. It's gonna
- 14:35be great. So that will be fun coming attractions as stay tuned as we
- 14:41will be going on to one of the best comedies of all time. As
- 14:46we keep going through Jim Carrey June Top five. We got dumb and Dumber
- 14:50next, dude. Oh yeah, dumb dummer, dumb and dummer. Well,
- 14:54it's gonna be great, so stay tuned for that. It will be
- 14:56a blast, I promise. But today we'll equally be a blast because we're
- 15:01here to talk about the mask. I guess they're all celebrating the same manaverturity.
- 15:07We welcome out the same year, but we had to bring in a
- 15:11guy who is just a He's a crazy man. You know, you get
- 15:15you get a mud mask on him or something like that. You start exfoliating
- 15:18this man. He glows, he's beautiful, he's lovely. He looks like
- 15:22a wolf in jazz clips. I don't know what I'm trying to do here,
- 15:28but you guys know I love him. It's Timothy Fuss. What's up?
- 15:31Tim Hey guys, Hey, eybody, how you doing. I'm great,
- 15:37happy to be here. Oh we're so happy to have you all.
- 15:39I feel like I haven't seen you in forever. I know, what have
- 15:43you been doing? Tell us everything? I mean, as little as my
- 15:46wife will allow me to get away with that. I actually went down.
- 15:50This will freak you out, rub I went down to Texas for my nephew's
- 15:54graduation. That's craol Bla knew little Blaine when he was like this AKA Dale.
- 16:02That's crazy. Yeah, he's yeah, he's he's about to turn nineteen
- 16:07too. It's just wild. Damn dude. Yeah, I didn't know our
- 16:11nephews were the same age. That's fun and so that was fun. Went
- 16:15down there. Jenica came with me, took her to see some alligators,
- 16:18which she likes to do when we're down there. Fun and yeah, so
- 16:23that was neat and then you know it, came back here and then right
- 16:26into home free work, studio work. Yeah, stay tuned for more info
- 16:33about that. Yeah, he's prepped new album coming, that's so exciting always
- 16:40yeah, and getting ready for some rehearsals and all the things. Yeah,
- 16:45she got a busy, busy summer coming up here. We got the eighth
- 16:49Quasi Annual Birthday Bash on seven thirteen, twenty four. That's in Nashville.
- 16:57Is that at the City Winery? City Winery again, easy for you to
- 17:00say. It is Citshville. It's hard. One of my favorite players to
- 17:06play as well as watch shows. It's such a cool intimate venue. Yeah,
- 17:10We're love that spot. And you want to talk about getting intimate,
- 17:14You guys should come out to the Oregon get Away August night through the eleventh.
- 17:19Do you know, I don't new what is happening. It's the extra
- 17:25VIP package. You get a burlesque show from me. But it is not
- 17:30cheap. It's not cheap. It's actually free. I just do it.
- 17:33Just no one comes. Well a great start, you're not. I mean,
- 17:45you do all sleep in the woods near each other, So I guess
- 17:48that's intimate. I bet, I bet people are getting intimate out there,
- 17:51right. There's got to be some shenanigans. There's this might be the year
- 17:57I show up, but I'm done. I'm a sing I'll be there because
- 18:00it's been getting requests as we speak all the time. Yeah that's true.
- 18:06Okay, Well, if you want to learn more about those things, uh,
- 18:10and about some exciting news involving Vetsfest, go to tim fast music dot
- 18:14com right now, do it, and then later too, and then do
- 18:18all the stuff. But yeah, well those sounds very fun, buddy,
- 18:22I can't wait. It's always a good time. Are you actually gonna come
- 18:25this year? I don't know yet, And I don't want to say I
- 18:29will year threaten. I do have to spend some money on flights too,
- 18:34because I screwed up some flights. It's we'll talk, we'll talk, I
- 18:38definitely. What I do want to do is come see you in Nashville when
- 18:42you're not busy sometime and just hang out and and do a little bit of
- 18:47that nothing with you and just sounds awesome. Let's plan that at some point.
- 18:52But these people don't care about that. Sure they might, they might
- 18:56care about that. But we're here today to talk about a lovely album having
- 19:00its thirtieth anniversary. Like we talked about, we're smoking about the mask.
- 19:04It's a mask, uh, He says that a surprising small amount in this
- 19:10movie. Anyway, I said too much, Rob, Will you get us
- 19:11started with just a rough SYNOPSI I would love to, Okay. When Timid
- 19:17bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss discovers a magical mask containing the spirit of the Norse god
- 19:22Loki, his entire life changes. While wearing the mask, Ipkiss becomes a
- 19:29supernatural playboy, exuding charm and confidence, which allows him to catch the eye
- 19:33of local nightclub singer Tina Carlile. Unfortunately, under the Mask's influence. Ip
- 19:40Kiss also robs a bank, which angers junior crime lord Dorian Tyrrell, whose
- 19:45goons get blamed for the heist. Nice, nice good, read good,
- 19:52thank you, thank you. Let's go to Rotten Tomatoes for one of the
- 19:56more confusing verdicts here. Critics have this coming in at a rock solid eight.
- 20:00I was shocked higher than I would expect the same. I genuinely was
- 20:07like, oh, this one might be tough, and I was like,
- 20:08wait what Yeah, and then no, ways, been sure I didn't get
- 20:11that. Yeah, and then audience members have it at sixty eight percent somehow,
- 20:17Yeah, for sure, flip flopped. I feel that way a lot.
- 20:19It's very weird. Is that like an average over thirty years or is
- 20:23that was that from the area? Really when surely it got panned at the
- 20:29time, I don't know. It's a hit though, I think, yeah,
- 20:33it was it it hit one hundred million dollars. It was his first
- 20:36movie to hit a hundred million, I know among the viewers. But I
- 20:41would think the critics would have hated it back then. Sure, Yeah,
- 20:44I don't know. I mean, so really, Rotten Tomatoes, you can
- 20:48only really from like two thousand and eight or whatever whenever it's started. That's
- 20:52about all you can That's true, A good point, I know. I
- 20:56just think it's funny. Like I we talk about Rotten Tomatoes every time,
- 21:00and I still don't have a good feel for what it's ever gonna say.
- 21:03I feel like I just always like, really wow, interesting because I always
- 21:10go see what they think, and then it has no bearing on whether or
- 21:14not I see the film. It's very strange. Well, and then you
- 21:15hear about people who like actively like dive bomb the number on run Tomato when
- 21:21they don't like something like the Star Wars, folks getting mad about yeah Ryan
- 21:26Johnson's version, and just you hear about that, You're like, is this
- 21:30that reliable? Why do I pay so much attention? It used to be
- 21:33so? My wife is so like she will not see a movie if it
- 21:37like Rotten Tomatoes, like splats it, she just won't. Sare that's so
- 21:41funny, lot of believer. She for sure hasn't seen half the movies that
- 21:45we've talked about on this podcast because we get a lot of splats. For
- 21:49sure. It's always like, oh, I deeply love this movie. Oh
- 21:53twelve percent? You said, Okay, are we talking about Premium Rush again
- 21:59every time I'm here. Yeah, can't break that way. That movie sucked,
- 22:04but was touching, and at least one portion it was beautiful. They
- 22:11made it rob the mom and the kiddo made it spoiler. Now people aren't
- 22:15gonna watch Premium Rush. Yeah, your world, cub, don't say I
- 22:18never did make any sense. It was also maybe four minutes of total runtime
- 22:25in the film. It was maybe random, so random anyway, why did
- 22:30it happen? Oh? He was delivering their documents. I have not thought
- 22:33about that movie much since we watched it. It was pretty brutal. Since
- 22:37I was on the pod and you guys had this same conversation. Yeah,
- 22:40that's true, you worked up every time. I love it, not the
- 22:45movie, but I love the conversation. Uh. Anyway, let's talk about
- 22:48a movie we do like, at least I think we do, but I
- 22:51won't know until I hear your hot take. Hot take smoking. That's a
- 22:56hot take. That's a hot Yeah, somebody had to do it. I
- 23:00love it. I love it. I will go first. I loved this
- 23:07movie when it came out. It hit me at the perfect time. Of
- 23:11course, as as we're learning all three of his first Big Movies did because
- 23:15I was nine years old, and man, I just thought it was super
- 23:19fun. I loved all the cartoon stuff that he does. Of course,
- 23:23his physical comedy that he is, you know, that's like his calling card.
- 23:27I feel like, especially for his early comedy work. I just think
- 23:32it's really fun. I felt some some new feelings for Cameron Diaz, new
- 23:40feelings those they were at that time. Oh okay, okay, I see
- 23:45not this one. Oh yeah, I know. Yeah, for sure,
- 23:48we all discovered some things about ourselves. She unlocked for sure. Uh and
- 23:55and was lovely and I'm sure we'll talk more about that. Some great music
- 23:59in this film, which is really fun. I don't think I thought of
- 24:03that like right off the bat, but upon the rewatch I was super super
- 24:06into that part. And yeah, just a really interesting upon rewatch metaphor for
- 24:14someone using cocaine. They just think they're doing everything right. They're grinding their
- 24:18giant teeth together. They are Yeah, I don't know, the world reacts
- 24:23differently to them. They think they're bulletproof. It's really an interesting thing.
- 24:29Did anybody else think that? I mean, he's got huge teeth and they
- 24:34are. Wow, that's amazing he's a big character, very amplified. But
- 24:44yeah, I just this movie. I mean, the quotes that come from
- 24:48this movie still live on in my life. It's really great. I didn't
- 24:52remember a lot of it. This is one I haven't watched since I was
- 24:56a kid. I feel like I watched it a ton at the time,
- 24:59had like the you know, the VHS tape and all that good stuff,
- 25:02But I haven't seen it a lot, lady a lot lately. Easy for
- 25:06me to say again, and yeah, I just I really liked the rewatch.
- 25:11I love this movie. I think it's a great time. Hot take.
- 25:14Hot hot take. I had seriously almost word for word for most of
- 25:19your take. The things that were different, I didn't remember it being in
- 25:26a fictional city. I just thought it was New York City, So I
- 25:30thought it made it feel like more comic bookie, which then made sense.
- 25:36The set design, the costumes, the overacting. It felt like you were
- 25:42kind of in a comic book. So growing up, I thought that all
- 25:48of the supporting actors were terrible, like specifically that Lieutenant Mitch Kellaway. That
- 25:56actor, I was just like, he might be the worst actor I've ever
- 25:59seen in any thing. And on this rewatch. I kind of saw that
- 26:02they were going for that like over the top, comic booky type kind of
- 26:07fun, and it changed my opinion on it because I just always thought it
- 26:11was horrible. But yeah, so that was kind of interesting seeing it through
- 26:18that new legs. And it was based off a comic right, which I
- 26:21didn't know before but I read about Yeah yeah, which is neat. It
- 26:26totally helps. Also, one of the first tapes I ever bought was the
- 26:33single of Cuban Pete, and I thought that was amazing. At the time.
- 26:40I was obsessed. I would just watch that scene over and over and
- 26:45over. I loved it. It was very funny to see him fall back
- 26:51into ace Ventura in a couple scenes, specifically when he is like reaming out
- 26:59his boss and like telling him off, he just goes a little bit exactly
- 27:04right back into which one filmed first? Do we know that? I meant
- 27:08to a rumor and I haven't ever looked this up, but I heard a
- 27:15rumor that Aceventura filmed first, and they actually kind of like we're shelving it
- 27:23then, and then the Mask did so well that they were like, never
- 27:27mind released that now. I don't know if there's any truth to that,
- 27:30But I like, I like that because you can't imagine like, well,
- 27:33you know, we'll get into my my hot take in a minute, but
- 27:36you know, some of these things on paper and his approach acting, you
- 27:40know, you could see like some suits just being like this is awful,
- 27:45like this isn't what We're going to hate this, like we can't do that,
- 27:47you know, and then that you know, obviously they were wrong.
- 27:49But we just did the Ace Fenterer episode and when the director Tom Shadiak watched
- 27:56it, he was very concerned that that was going to end his career,
- 28:00and that was his directorial debut, so he was a little nervous. Yeah,
- 28:06but yeah, I don't have too hot of a take either. I
- 28:10just it was fun being able to see it in a different light this time,
- 28:14not as an eleven year old sure, and appreciate parts of it that
- 28:18I did not appreciate at the time. Yeah, Hot, that's my hot
- 28:22take, hot take, love it? Hot? What do you got to
- 28:26So I'm almost the opposite of you as far as the acting approach. So
- 28:32as a kid didn't know any better, Sure, it was fine, And
- 28:36then just now watching I was like, it was reminding me now in hindsight,
- 28:41just how bad in general, like bit part actors were back then.
- 28:45Yeah, you know it was. It's like such a such a weird thing
- 28:49to like watch movies you loved back then, like even like serious movies,
- 28:52and you're just like the guy that has the one line, it's like that
- 28:56was so bad. Yeah, And I the same thing. I thought the
- 29:02Lieutenant was terrible like this time around, and I saw what he was going
- 29:06for, but I don't think he pulled it off. Sure, I mean
- 29:08I don't like him, but I hated him when I was a kid.
- 29:11Yeah, but some of those like goons and stuff were like laughably bad,
- 29:15really bad. Yeah, and you know, like for example, the the
- 29:21redheaded lady whose name Rob probably Yeah, there you go, Like she was
- 29:26kind of she was doing it too, but she was pulling it off.
- 29:30Yeah, that kind of like over the top thing, whereas I thought the
- 29:33Lieutenant did not did not pull it off. Of course, nobody is as
- 29:37over the top as Jim Carrey, and somehow it works for him, so
- 29:41totally works. I am surprised this movie got greenlit now after like watching it
- 29:48now, you know, I'm just like think about you know, just like
- 29:51the screenplay and some of like the Lions, but also some of those moments
- 29:56like Cuban Pete, you know, like imagine pitching that to like, you
- 30:00know, an exec and being like, so he's he's going to get trapped
- 30:03by the police, and the way he gets out of it is he like
- 30:07sings and dances this song and by the end of it, all the police
- 30:11officers have joined in. You know, I just I can't imagine an exec
- 30:15being like, sounds great, here's here's a few million dollars. Yeah,
- 30:18it's just shocking dancing. Yeah, yeah, how much? Yeah, how
- 30:26much of this this movie? Yeah? Anyway, so I'm just like,
- 30:29I'm I'm obviously I'm glad I got made. Loved it as a kid,
- 30:33loved Jim Carrey in general. My like comedic stylings were just a rip off
- 30:38of Jim Carrey. I said everything he said, including all the things in
- 30:44this movie ace Ventura. You know, it was like until I discovered sarcasm,
- 30:48Like I was like a really animated Jim Carrey approach, like total class
- 30:52clown as a kid, and so that, yeah, it was kind of
- 30:56it was kind of fun. I will say that this movie actually held up
- 31:00better than I thought it was going to same Chataman, I watched it today
- 31:04actually, and he also commented on the score, especially like the opening like
- 31:08title sequence is like this really impressive orchestral thing, like somebody went all out
- 31:17you know on that. But uh, I was like ready to be like,
- 31:22you know, embarrassed at how much I love this movie, and I
- 31:26was like, it kind of it kind of holds up. Actually. Uh.
- 31:29The effects are super impressive, yeah, for the time, you know,
- 31:33like especially, and it was really fun. Did y'all see the The
- 31:37Light and Magic docuseries watch it? Because you watch immediately it's so good.
- 31:45But they they you know, show some of the effects from this because this
- 31:49was it was only like three years I think after T two, which was
- 31:55the first time they had ever done like that kind of seed I like three
- 32:00D CGI completely computer generated like three D character so to like, and that
- 32:06was so groundbreaking at the time. And so to you know, go from
- 32:09that to all the effects in this. You know, Jurassic Park was like
- 32:15the year before this, and that was the first time they had like really
- 32:19done it on that scale and it was like a huge risk, you know,
- 32:22And so the following year to just like commit to it and for it
- 32:24to work and kind of like hold up even the effects, you know,
- 32:29for it being that over the top comic book. I was really impressed with
- 32:31that. I totally forgot about Richard Jenny and Ben Stein being in this movie
- 32:38because I don't think I knew who they were then, So that was really
- 32:43fun. I was like, oh my god, that's Richard Jenny, and
- 32:45I thought he was great in it too, did you? So I became
- 32:49a Richard Jenny fan after this movie, okay, and then found out he
- 32:54was a stand up and then watched his his series that was on TV for
- 33:00a minute. It was called The Platypus Man. Did you watch that at
- 33:04all? No? No, I never heard of that. It was great,
- 33:07but I was like excited about it because I and it was pretty much
- 33:09just because of the mask anyway. Fun. I was even more I think
- 33:14impressed with Jim Carrey you know, in this watching it with like a little
- 33:20bit more of a critical I just all the physical comedy and just how like
- 33:25athletic he is too. Yeah, and you know, like so much of
- 33:30the stuff I was I was noticing like it only works with him like him
- 33:35or Robin Williams are the only two people that could pull this off, honestly,
- 33:38any other actor. It's like in this movie bombs probably, But you
- 33:43know, so much of the stuff that he was, like the practical stuff
- 33:45he was doing, you know, because I noticed, you know a lot
- 33:49of the physical stuff with Cameron Diaz is a stunt person, but a lot
- 33:53of it is him. You know, take a moment where they cut to
- 33:57him and he's like spinning around that pole, like during Cuban Pete, you
- 34:00know when he starts at the top and he's like spins all the way down
- 34:02and it's him, and just like and just yeah, all the physical stuff
- 34:07he's doing and just like how flexible and in shape he is, like really
- 34:10really blew me away. Anyway, I thought I thought he thought he was
- 34:15amazing. Uh, thought thought Cameron was amazing. Loved Richard, Jenny Beinstein
- 34:22and Peter whatever his name is, the villain guy. Oh yeah, yeah
- 34:28sure, Oh my god, we just stump rob Oh yeah, I don't
- 34:32know his name, Peter Green. Yeah, because he was in pulp fiction
- 34:37too, so I should know that name. Oh yeah, that's right,
- 34:43you know. And so it was it was just like so interesting to just
- 34:45kind of see like these people like really shining surrounded by just terrible actors,
- 34:52and you know, anyway, in general, loved it as a kid,
- 34:58also wanted on VHS watch a thousand times. Yeah, was kind of surprised
- 35:02at what I didn't remember. Yeah, And there was like even moments too,
- 35:07where I was starting to doubt my memory, Like there's all these like
- 35:10where I was like, wait, is is this about to be a line
- 35:14that I thought was in ace Ventura? You know, like he'd go to
- 35:16say some or like you mentioned, there's like those moments where it's like kind
- 35:20of the same thing, like is he about to say it? And then
- 35:23he wouldn't, And I was you know, it was interesting honestly that he
- 35:28didn't, you know, reuse anything for those two movies. You know,
- 35:34if you think about it, like, right, so many of those moments,
- 35:37you know, like just some of like the crazy. But that's just
- 35:40how amazing he is too, And I'd be interested to know like how much
- 35:45of it was scripted versus improv and totally all that stuff. A ton of
- 35:49it must have been improvd, right, like yeah, crazy, you know,
- 35:52but it's yeah, it's just it's just interesting that he he's you know,
- 35:57because so many things that A. Sventura said could have been said by
- 36:00the mask and vice versa. For sure, you know, it's like how
- 36:01do you do smoking? Somebody stop me versus alrighty then and yummy, you
- 36:07know anyway? For sure, for sure, that's that was a lot.
- 36:12But thank you for it, Love it, hot take, Hot takes.
- 36:16Well, you were kind of going into some of these acting performances. I
- 36:19think we should pick our favorite one. I feel like it's going to be
- 36:22pretty easy, but I think we should pick the dude the dude. I'm
- 36:28the dude, so that's what you call me, you know that, or
- 36:32his dude or duder or you know, eldudo reno. If you're not into
- 36:37the whole brevity thing. For this one, we got to be in agreement,
- 36:40rights, James, I would think clearly yes. But you can expound
- 36:45on why you think Jim Carrey is so good, right, Jim? I
- 36:52mean, like I said, just particularly in this in this movie. One
- 36:59thing I was really a shading watcher at this time too, was like effects
- 37:04like this hadn't been done too much, and I was singing about how much
- 37:07faith he had to put into it too. You know where it's like,
- 37:13at this moment, your heart is literally going to pop out of your chest.
- 37:16And so he had to just be like and just you know, trust
- 37:20that that was going to happen, or like make a face and you know
- 37:23it's like your face is gonna your eyes are going to shoot out, and
- 37:27your tongue is going to roll across, you know, things like that.
- 37:30Like just committing to that when you haven't really seen it done before, sure
- 37:36is an interesting like leap of faith for everybody, you know, but particularly
- 37:39him. And you know it's again, I was more impressed with like the
- 37:44non effect stuff that he was doing, the singing, the dancing, the
- 37:49flopping around. Yeah totally, and yeah, you know, just that that
- 37:55that level of commitment to what he does, which is kind of so oh
- 38:00specific to him, you know, which hasn't really been done since I like
- 38:06Jerry Lewis really you know that that kind of thing. And I even remember,
- 38:14and we may have talked about this maybe on the pod, but like
- 38:16I remember I saw ace Ventura first, but I remember seeing a trailer for
- 38:25Aceventure and I wish I could remember what movie it was, but like in
- 38:29the theater and I was just remember thinking like, I've never seen a performance
- 38:36like this, Like what particularly that The one thing that second in my head
- 38:39is that that moment in Asventure where the shark pops out of the water and
- 38:45he yells ah, And I was just like, what is this? You
- 38:52know, because it wasn't like a naked gun movie. It was like just
- 38:54like a normal movie with this guy acting that way. Yeah, And I
- 39:00was just like, what in the world I have to see? Who is
- 39:04this guy? I have to see it? And then I remember, you
- 39:07know, people being like that's the guy from in Living Color, and I
- 39:09was like what anyway? Yeah, So yeah, I just I'm also just
- 39:15impressed with his like commitment to it, you know, and and the fact
- 39:21that it worked, you know, because that's a that's a big swing.
- 39:23Yeah, and if it doesn't work, you don't get to do movies after
- 39:29that, Yeah you're done. But instead, idiot, he had like the
- 39:32biggest year. Yeah, one of the best years ever for an actor.
- 39:38For sure. It's got to be a tough five. Yeah, I agree
- 39:43with all that, And honestly, I feel like he could have gone and
- 39:46done some like serious musical theater if he would have wanted to go that run
- 39:51like, he's got a pretty strong voice, and like you said, he
- 39:55can like really move and it would have been interesting to see if he would
- 40:00have done anything with that, because I I think he could have for sure.
- 40:05And yeah, I also thought it was kind of cool. There were
- 40:07some times where we got to see him just try to be a normal person,
- 40:10because we hadn't ever seen that from him at this point. So there's
- 40:15some times where he's trying to be sincere and not just being hilarious, and
- 40:21sometimes it works, sometimes it didn't in this one. It gets better as
- 40:24he goes along in movies, but it was just kind of fun to actually
- 40:30see who, like, actually Jim Carrey is for a minute, you know.
- 40:36Thank you for saying that, because there was like one moment in particular.
- 40:39I did think that early on when she first comes into the bank and
- 40:44he's like doing the goofy stuff with his tie a tongue, and I was
- 40:49like, that's kinda weird. I mean, obviously he's just being nervous at
- 40:52that moment, but I was like, all right, careful, now this
- 40:54is this isn't Stanley, this is more MASKI. But he figured it out.
- 41:00He has the movie went along. Yeah, Yeah, Anyway, what
- 41:02do you got, bigs. I mean, yeah, the same thing you
- 41:06guys said. I just think he's so incredible in this movie and he's just
- 41:10such a I mean, other people can do it, but no one can
- 41:14do it quite like he can. And I think it's super interesting to him
- 41:17that you brought up Naked Gun because he's kind of the opposite of that movie.
- 41:22Like in that movie, crazy stuff happens, but Leslie Nielsen is just
- 41:29like totally like his thing is just treat it like you're acting in a serious
- 41:34movie, and that's why it's funny, you know, and as opposed to
- 41:37this where it's like, well, in this movie, a bunch of crazy
- 41:39stuff does happen around him, but also like he is the crazy stuff a
- 41:45lot of the times. And just the way he can contort his face and
- 41:49honestly, just the way he a thousand percent commits is really fun and it
- 41:55really works well. And I'm with you, like there is a world where
- 42:00it it doesn't work, but for some reason, for him, it does,
- 42:04and it's it's really interesting. I also found myself really compelled this time
- 42:07by the all the references he makes to like other other films and other pop
- 42:13culture moments and like the cartoons and stuff, because I agree, I think
- 42:17a ton of this is ed libbed, especially and I think I even read
- 42:21like most of it is when he's the mask character and just like it's it's
- 42:28very Robin Williams in those moments because he's just like thing the thing, the
- 42:32thing, the thing, and I love that. I think it's super super
- 42:36impressive. So yeah, it's a it's a clean sweep. He's just great.
- 42:39Yep, yeah, good call. Well let's let's do some of these
- 42:43supporting characters and let's pick the Tucci chi Who is your favorite supporting character in
- 42:52this tim I went with Max as Milo the dog. I thought I was
- 42:58gonna be fun. Okay, nice dude, that's an impressive dog. I
- 43:07mean, Chatham and I were just like the one scene in particularly where he's
- 43:09taking the keys and he's like looking at the sleeping guy like nervously. I'm
- 43:15perfectly train a dog to do that. I don't know, he's such a
- 43:20big part of that. So cute. That's a Jack Russell Terrier, that's
- 43:24right. And I also had to uh look up and see if like this
- 43:30is the Jack Wrustle Terrier from like other things and it's not well, you
- 43:37know, I was thinking like Wishbone, and you know, there's a few
- 43:40other I can't think of the top, but there's a few other movies you
- 43:44know that have like a little hyperactive Jack wrestle Terryan. Yeah, totally,
- 43:49but anyway, that's funny, the nervous thing. You're totally right because he
- 43:52plays that scene so or I put him playing it so well, or something
- 43:57like, yeah, it's so fun a lot. I'm with you. I
- 44:00had that exact same thing down. It also goes to tell you that the
- 44:05supporting characters are not very good in this movie. We picked the one that
- 44:10can't talk at all. So yeah, it's pretty impressive that this was Cameron
- 44:16Diaz's acting debut. I thought, I thought she's pretty great. She's obviously
- 44:22very beautiful and had that down. I always thought it was her singing back
- 44:27in the day, and then I saw my best friend's wedding and it was
- 44:30like, oh, I guess that's probably not the same singer. She was
- 44:34horrible but didn't get to act like a ton, but that she had some
- 44:39sincere moments, like when she goes into the jail cell to like be like
- 44:45I want you know, like the guy under the mask or whatever she got.
- 44:47I bought it. You know, it was like it could have been
- 44:51super cheesy. The only thing that is cheesy was stan Lee yep kiss Yeah.
- 45:00But in general, Yeah, and like a pretty demanding role, like
- 45:05for your debut, you know, like it would be easy to like really
- 45:10doubt yourself, Like you have to lip sync, you have to like dance,
- 45:15you have to you know, like you also have to be Yeah,
- 45:19it's like you have to be really like sultry and and all the things,
- 45:22but also kind of cute and it's not an easy thing to pull off like
- 45:27that. That could again if she's crappy. Also, the movie doesn't really
- 45:34work, you know, agreed. Yeah. And also I will say like
- 45:37the bad guy was like almost like too good for this movie, except once
- 45:44he turns into the mask and then his lines are so bad and I can't
- 45:49believe he like, you know, he just like really committed. I'm like,
- 45:52man, good for you for just going for it too, because these
- 45:55are really bad. It was brutal. Yeah. But anyway, one thing
- 46:00about Cameron Diaz. I saw that when she was auditioning for the film,
- 46:06so she was like a model beforehand. And just they just asked her to
- 46:10come in. They were kind of blown away that she hadn't really ever acted
- 46:14before, and they're like, okay, so you'd have to be here for
- 46:17this time. She's like, yeah, I can't really do that then,
- 46:21and like wasn't really taking it like super seriously. Like she's like, this
- 46:25would be neat if I got it, but it's also I don't need this
- 46:29either. And I think that whole kind of Jason Bateman from SmartLess Sexy Indifference
- 46:35like really helped work. Funny, you know, isn't it funny to think
- 46:39back to like not knowing who she was, you know, it was just
- 46:45like yeah, like one, you know, like one, who is this?
- 46:49Like have you seen that lady from the Mask? You know? Just
- 46:52yeah, blew a teenage minds big time. Yes, absolutely, I love
- 47:00those pics. That's really great. Uh well, what was the oh crap?
- 47:04I had it written down, Amy Yazbec that you said earlier. I
- 47:08thought she was great. I really liked her a lot. I'm with you,
- 47:12like that could another example of that could have been really bad. But
- 47:15I think she pulled it off. And she had like kind of a tough
- 47:20one because we had to both believe she was nice and then also believe she
- 47:24wasn't the whole time, you know, which isn't always easy. And she
- 47:28had to do her like three total lines or something. But she like when
- 47:30she switches character, you know, like at first she's like doing that over
- 47:35the top thing, which isn't being funny because it's kind of meta. It's
- 47:38like then she switches in her like accent switches even, and she's like,
- 47:42yeah, it sounds like Jersey or something, you know, Yeah, I
- 47:45love it all right. Yeah, she was really like that. She was
- 47:49great. I'm a Yazbec fan. Always happened? What else? Tell me
- 47:53what else done? She was robinhood Men in tite. She was the one
- 47:59with Yeah, the chastity was so funny. She was on wings, which
- 48:05was very big in my household. Oh I forgot. She was on wings
- 48:08the later years and she was the problem child, say that problem. I
- 48:20was trying to place her because I'm like, I know her face, and
- 48:22now it makes sense. It was Robin Admond in tights. I also saw
- 48:24that one hundred times or whatever. Yeah, dude, I don't think that
- 48:29one holds up the way this one does. Yeah, I don't know.
- 48:31I haven't seen that in so long. Well, when you guys do your
- 48:36your mail, Brooks, Yeah, well we you visit it for sure.
- 48:45We had mentioned Richard Jenny and I always liked him after this, I thought
- 48:51he was going to get really big. He didn't get huge. He had
- 48:53that show that was based around him and it didn't do well, and then
- 48:58he didn't do much after that. I think he pretty much kind of stuck
- 49:00to stand up comedy after that. Yeah. Yeah, that made me wonder
- 49:05watching this, I'm like, why didn't he do more after this? Yeah?
- 49:07Be great he was, and but yeah, I think that show kind
- 49:12of bombed. And but I think he was a very successful stand up comedian.
- 49:19Sure was. Yeah, And actually I've I've heard a lot of comedians
- 49:22talk about how underrated they they thought he was and how he was really kind
- 49:27of inspirational to a lot of the guys that are huge now. So I
- 49:31thought a cast full of people who were like way over the top, he
- 49:36felt he felt a little grounded. He's kind of, you know, kind
- 49:39of a douchey guy who's always going after and stuff. But it, Yeah,
- 49:45it wasn't real showy, which I kind of liked in this. Yeah,
- 49:49I like that too. I like when he comes out with the gun
- 49:52when the cops are coming in. He's like a freeze. Yeah. I
- 49:55love that. Also shout out to Tim Bagley, who plays IRV the Mechanic.
- 50:02He's been in a bunch of stuff. He's not like a super well
- 50:06known guy, but I love that guy. I think he's really really good.
- 50:08He's like a perfect too, because he's always pretty funny in his small
- 50:14role. You know, I wouldn't be surprised if he's like a Second City
- 50:16kind of guy. He's gotta be. By the way, something we just
- 50:20talked about is making me go and make a revision to my draft. I
- 50:23just want to Oh, so we'll fun We'll come back to that later.
- 50:29Love that. If you want to know what we're talking about, Patreon,
- 50:34do it. Nice luck, excellent plug, excellent. Ah, that was
- 50:39kind of all I had. Yeah, I'm not going to give Lieutenant Kellaway
- 50:44any anytime because just never never been a fan. Yeah he's he was.
- 50:52He was always the worst part of Animal House too back in the day.
- 50:54Yeah, yeah, I agree with that. I just I don't like that
- 51:00that's funny. Well, let's let's move ahead and pick our favorite scene.
- 51:02Then huh, what do you think should we pick the danga? The dingus
- 51:07sodas is quite simple, really, Dingus Dingus. I could talk about my
- 51:10dingus all night long. Who wants to go first? And still all of
- 51:15our favorite scene or at least mine first? Yeah, for sure, that's
- 51:20my I mean it's Cuban peak, the heart beat, it's definitely keeping peak.
- 51:22Yeah, sure, I did it in my a cappella group. That's
- 51:28the best. That's fun. People were probably so sick of me singing chick
- 51:32chicky boom. Oh yeah. Also, can we take a moment and have
- 51:37you guys ever seen the YouTube video or the clip of the chubby kids singing
- 51:44that by a pool? No? Oh my god, I hope it's not
- 51:47me? Is it new? It's not? Well, it's old but not
- 51:52our? Did somebody get me by a pool between two pillars the air?
- 52:07I can't wait for you guys to see this. It's so that's an inside
- 52:12joke that made me laugh very hard. Thank you, Tim, you're oh
- 52:17that's good. Yeah, Cuban pete. Yeah, so that's that's the one
- 52:22for sure. Loved it so much. A runner up is probably the Coco
- 52:30Bango Club when he first meets Tina as the mask, so he has the
- 52:37that's where he gets like the cartoon wolf face and the heart going out of
- 52:40his chest and the tongue out of his mouth. Yeah. Yeah, that's
- 52:46just and that's pretty much all like the special effects and stuff. There's also
- 52:51a big dancing scene which it looked like it was them for a lot of
- 52:54the time, and then you'd see when they were doing the really tough stuff
- 52:58that it wasn't them. They go to that overhead camera exactly. Yeah,
- 53:04but they were definitely doing a lot of it for sure, getting in there,
- 53:07Yeah for sure. Yeah. And then when the bad dudes come in
- 53:12and shoot him, he has that hilarious death scene where he's like dying and
- 53:16he's going into all the different roles, all the pop culture references. Yeah,
- 53:22which also, like I quoted so many of those not knowing the reference,
- 53:27same dude, same yeah, no idea, that whole thing, the
- 53:34space Ventura. But when he's like there's something on the wing, some thing,
- 53:38Yeah, you know, I did that not knowing what I was doing
- 53:43for sure anyway, And I didn't know it's going back to that the ace
- 53:50Ventura, like in that pool when he just does reference after reference after reference.
- 53:54And you know, I never watched Star Trek or anything, no idea
- 53:59what any of that stuff. I'm a doctor, not a pool man.
- 54:02I had no idea, And even still now in this like it only occurred
- 54:07to me this watch, being like this is probably all from something, and
- 54:10I still don't know what it is, right, Yeah, anyway, Yeah,
- 54:15that's great. The only one we haven't mentioned is I really like the
- 54:22the ben Stein scene. Yeah, he's in the you know, in this
- 54:27office talking It's like, I'm really not that kind of a doctor, and
- 54:30you know, then he tries to put on the mask but it doesn't activate
- 54:34and all that. It's just so so funny. Still killed me, Like
- 54:39he just he just his comedy just it just gets me still now it's perfect,
- 54:45like so much of what he says, and like like chinaman, I
- 54:49just laughed so hard. When he's trying to get the dog to like jump
- 54:54up into the window, he like kind of like loses his like sum and
- 54:59and he's like some effort didn't do it. You know. It just that
- 55:02it's so funny to me. You know, I'm just like he just knows
- 55:06me. It's like him and Will Ferrell. We've talked about this. They
- 55:07can just be the same character in every movie forever and it will always work
- 55:12for me and we love it. Yeah. Yeah, And that was the
- 55:16other one, the dog stealing like the keys and all that stuffs scene.
- 55:22I love it. But yeah, ben Stein was great, so great.
- 55:24He was get a good call. We didn't talk about him in this parting,
- 55:28but he was fun. It was really fun. I liked it so
- 55:31yeah, but give be for sure, dude. The noises he makes when
- 55:36he's like trying to get the mask to work, oh man, I would
- 55:43do I would imitate that just out of context. Yeah. It was probably
- 55:47so annoying to everyone else around me. Yeah, I mean same, same.
- 55:54Yeah. Those are the only ones I wrote down. Did you guys,
- 55:59are any other ones you want to talk about? No? I mean
- 56:02I mentioned him. I thought the bad guy was was pretty good. You
- 56:07know. Yeah, he like he kind of did the you know, went
- 56:09went straighter with it, you know, like wasn't like a caricature of a
- 56:15bad guy when he wasn't in the mask, you know, like he was
- 56:17on my Oh, this guy's like actually acting. Yeah, you know.
- 56:22Anyway, I also loved the makeup and stuff they did for that, because
- 56:25like, he's obviously evil, so when he puts on the mask, it's
- 56:30like a whole different thing, Like his teeth are all jagged and weird,
- 56:34and voice gets really deep. Jim's were perfect, and yeah, all that
- 56:37stuff. I thought that was cool. People with really deep voices are evil.
- 56:39I don't know if there's evil. Heard that you guess what we talk
- 56:47about now? Well, yeah, I think that's a good call. Let's
- 56:52let's go to the next bit. Let's do show me the money, show
- 56:57me the money, show me. This was some quote, s buddy.
- 57:06I just picked one, and it was because I know you guys would would
- 57:08have a million. But it was the one I said so many times,
- 57:15And like you mentioned earlier, happens way less in this movie than you thought.
- 57:20Smoking. I can't believe it's only twice, right, yeah, the
- 57:24beginning in the very end, yep, that's crazy. And then does he
- 57:29do somebody stop me twice? Also? Or is that just once? I
- 57:31think it's just the once, But I said that a million times. Also,
- 57:36Oh, that was the one that I really quoted a lot, for
- 57:37sure stammer. Yeah, yeah, there's for sure some more. The It's
- 57:44party time b A r T Y because I got her. Yeah, so
- 57:51good. I love that that's a spicy meat. The ball did that a
- 57:55million times. I know that I didn't get this at the time, but
- 58:02window I don't care. I loved that. I love that. I didn't
- 58:07get that either. That one felt new to me. Yeah, for sure,
- 58:10I will say some of that that stuff didn't age so well. Sure,
- 58:15you know, like when he was doing the French thing in the park,
- 58:17I was like, yeah, I did not pepi RAPI for sure.
- 58:22For sure, the Divide and Conquer and yeah, that wasn't great. Well,
- 58:28you know, he was like, yeah, anyway, I guess we
- 58:30don't have to quote it, but talking about revealing his croissant and stuff like
- 58:34that, Yeah, and you didn't get that. You know. There were
- 58:37some adult things that I did not understand, like when when they're taking out
- 58:42all the stuff in his pockets and then you know, he does like a
- 58:45balloon thing and then he whips out of condom. Had no idea. He's
- 58:50like, oh, that's wrong pocket. Same. I still missed it the
- 58:53second time. Well, I read it in the trivia, but I was
- 58:58like, I didn't even know that French scene. Even this time had I
- 59:01rewound it and put the subtitles on because I wasn't sure what the hell he
- 59:05was saying. And then I was like, oh, oh, okay,
- 59:10Stanley, no, and then this is a scene. This is a scene,
- 59:15not a not a quote. But also, you know, he commits
- 59:20a very violent sexual offense against the people in that shop. That's true,
- 59:24you know, it's it's funny. But I'm like, oh, that's that's
- 59:30really horrible. I forgot about that. You know, he say something about
- 59:32like lug nuts or something. Well that that made me laugh a lot.
- 59:36Hold on to your lugnuts. But yeah, but a whole muffler up the
- 59:39guess. Yeah, I was like, oh, oh, maybe they were
- 59:45into it. It didn't seem into it. It didn't seem certainly didn't like
- 59:50the end, you're right. Yeah, so anyway, yeah, uh,
- 59:57I loved this one. I forgot it was from this movie. But they
- 1:00:00go, son, now, get out of here, you bother me,
- 1:00:01you bother me. But I'm pretty sure he is quoting that from it.
- 1:00:07But I assume this is where I heard it the first time, right,
- 1:00:08And I don't know what it's from originally, but yeah, get out of
- 1:00:12here. Can't you bother me. I love that so much. Do you
- 1:00:19have any idea how hard it is to find a good man in the city?
- 1:00:22In this city, most of them think monogamy is a kind of wood
- 1:00:28amy. Rob. I noticed a reference I absolutely did not kept before.
- 1:00:34But it's to one of your favorite movies. Uh No, it wasn't me.
- 1:00:38It was the One Armed Man from The Huge Jugitive right yep? Which
- 1:00:45was that a TV show before it was a movie. We learned the TV
- 1:00:47show way back that he was referencing. I'm guessing for sure it was the
- 1:00:52TV show. The movie had come out the year before, so it might
- 1:00:55have been. Okay, okay. So that was one of those scenes where
- 1:01:00I was like starting to doubt myself because when he's getting rested, he's like,
- 1:01:05I confess. I was like, is this the grassy No line?
- 1:01:08Oh? But that was a centura and I was. But that's another thing
- 1:01:15that I quoted, not knowing what the hell the Grassy No was as a
- 1:01:16kid. The same for sure. Ah, the money better be here,
- 1:01:29ip kiss or you can ip kiss your ass goodbye. This time made me
- 1:01:36pretty happy. I liked it. Come on, my low put some effort
- 1:01:38into it, like you said, I love that line so much. Good.
- 1:01:45Yeah, totally. Uh. And I'm just an ex employee that's come
- 1:01:51back for his back pay or should I say payback? What are all the
- 1:01:57stuff he had to say at the end was brutal man and really takes the
- 1:02:00mask off for one last kiss, and just all that I noticed. We
- 1:02:04didn't really pick the ending as one of her it was. It was great.
- 1:02:10Yeah. I think that was all the ones I had, though.
- 1:02:14Yeah, I didn't really write much else. So many things so fast it's
- 1:02:19hard to yeah, have them land sometimes. The I did like the one
- 1:02:23bit where Richard Jenny is like, you don't need her, man, you
- 1:02:27need somebody a little more down to somebody with some integrity, somebody with red
- 1:02:30hair and full poudy lips, a white blouse, a green jacket and a
- 1:02:35name tag. He's like, boy, you really narrowed it down. She's
- 1:02:38walking it in. I just liked that bit. Yeah, that's fabulous.
- 1:02:42I love that. That was the last one I wrote down well, And
- 1:02:45honestly, like I said, I watched this movie a thousand times, and
- 1:02:49this time around, I was like, does he end up with the redhead?
- 1:02:53Right? Due? I thought, nice, lady, you know,
- 1:02:59and also we just kind of breeze over the fact that Stanley did commit a
- 1:03:07lot of crimes and so did she, you know, like she facilitates the
- 1:03:13whole bank robbery and all that to begin with, and which I'd like sort
- 1:03:15of forgotten about to you know, it's just like we're just gonna pretend like
- 1:03:20we're gonna forget that they should probably go to jail or at least get fined
- 1:03:24a lot that money's insured. It's fine. He works for the banks,
- 1:03:29and as we know, they don't go to jail, so it's fine.
- 1:03:31Okay, good point, good call political. So controversial, very controversial.
- 1:03:40He really are he really is. So I think we should I think we
- 1:03:47should move along and we should go to Bugs Boohoo moments the crying Game.
- 1:03:55Bugs. I don't think he cried in this movie. I'm gonna just say
- 1:04:00zero times. You did not cry in this movie. Interesting it. Do
- 1:04:06you have any all verbally assault you like I always do? If you cried
- 1:04:14a single time in this movie, you should probably see a physician because you
- 1:04:18might have order. Yes, ah, no, you're right, I don't
- 1:04:24cry in this movie. I was a little worried. I was like,
- 1:04:28oh no, This is one where I really have to have a sit down
- 1:04:30with myself if I do. What if I'd have been like thirteen, it
- 1:04:34was to day like, oh man, I don't want to hear about him.
- 1:04:40Let's just go to the next thing. Just move on. That's ridiculous.
- 1:04:44Ah yeah, no, no, no, there's a lot in I
- 1:04:47guess you know it wouldn't surprise me if you just got a touch Misty when
- 1:04:54she was like it was the man under the mask. I did like that
- 1:04:58an awful lot. But I didn't cry. Oh thank god, because I'm
- 1:05:02a man of integrity and I'm tough. Okay, let's go to movie trivia
- 1:05:10next. The oversized teeth on the mass character were originally going to be used
- 1:05:15only during silent scenes, but Jim Carrey learned to talk while wearing them to
- 1:05:19make his character that much more wacky. And he does a great job.
- 1:05:24He did smoking. That's why they're all like kind of lispy, which is
- 1:05:28fun. Let's see. Chuck Russell revealed that a lot of money was saved
- 1:05:33on special effects after Carrie was cast because of his crazy body movements and he
- 1:05:39was so flexible and cartoonish anyway, they didn't need to enhance them digitally.
- 1:05:44So I thought that was cool, very frugal choice on their part. The
- 1:05:47banana yellow suit that Jim Carey wears is based on a suit with that his
- 1:05:53mom made for him in his first attempt at stand up comedy. Oh that
- 1:05:57almost makes me want to cry. That's very cute. I love it.
- 1:06:00Also, I'd wear the hell out of that yellow suit. It wouldn't look
- 1:06:03good on me, but I'd love it. I'd love it. The producers
- 1:06:09originally hated Cuban Pete the musical number and wanted it gone. They insisted it
- 1:06:14was too long, not funny, dragged on. Test audiences loved it,
- 1:06:17so they had to keep it. Yet half of this, Yep, they're
- 1:06:24dumb. They're dumb, and it's stupid. But yeah, I loved it.
- 1:06:29It took four hours to apply the mask makeup. That seems like a
- 1:06:33lot. I was suppressed by that. Uh. The singing for Cameron Diaz
- 1:06:42was dubbed by Susan Boyd, so just the flowers for Susan Boyd could work.
- 1:06:47When the police I thought this was fun. When the police are searching
- 1:06:51the masks pants, you know, and they keep pulling out all the extra
- 1:06:56stuff they had just there's no like good answer for they had just you know,
- 1:07:01shot it just above. He had the bottoms of his pants cut off,
- 1:07:05and prop guys were handing items up through the bottom of them. So
- 1:07:10that's why they keep doing the bit over and over. And I was like,
- 1:07:13I love how not technical that is right. It's like some guy had
- 1:07:19to have his hand up his pants for an hour or whatever. So funny.
- 1:07:26Cameron Diaz auditioned twelve times for the part in this movie, and she
- 1:07:30only landed it seven days before shooting started, which seems that seems late.
- 1:07:36Did they always cut it that late? You think with some of those I
- 1:07:41don't know, that's crazy. Jim Carrey was paid four hundred and fifty thousand
- 1:07:47dollars for his work in this film, which ended up being a huge bargain
- 1:07:51because the deal was signed before Ace Ventuer, a Pet Detective, became a
- 1:07:55surprise hit and made the mask a hot property for the summer release of ninety
- 1:08:00four. Carrie then inked a seven million dollar deal before the film opened to
- 1:08:06star in dem and Dummer, which we'll be talking about next time. Get
- 1:08:12seven million, that's a lot, that's a big jump. Four fifty to
- 1:08:16seven million is a big jump. Happens to Betsy. Uh. It was
- 1:08:20Jim Carrey's idea to have the mask blow a smoke cart and then snort an
- 1:08:25arrow through it, which I loved. Kind of like you said, Tim,
- 1:08:29like he had to trust that they were going to make it, you
- 1:08:30know, work and make it look cool. They did the majority of the
- 1:08:36dancing in their scene, like we said, of the various cartoon references in
- 1:08:45it. He he's the Tasmanian devil when he's traveling as a tornado, Pepi
- 1:08:50leapew when he's doing all the rapie things, Bugs Bunny when he's dying in
- 1:08:58the gangster's arms. That's a bucks Bunny bit apparently. And then techs Avery's
- 1:09:04oh the wolf is apparently the wolf's name is tex Avery, which I didn't
- 1:09:09know, but that's the wolf thing when he sees her in the nightclub.
- 1:09:12So I thought that was fun. Ummmmm. He ad libbed the scene with
- 1:09:17the dog where he tells him to put some effort into it. That was
- 1:09:21all ed I guess, which I didn't know that particularly fun. Oh.
- 1:09:29I always love this when Dorian says the party's over in ten minutes and he
- 1:09:32starts the bomb timer. It's actually ten minutes exactly till the movie's end.
- 1:09:38Yeah. I always think that's fun. I like that too. That's surprising
- 1:09:42though they you know, they could not do that, and I wouldn't know,
- 1:09:45yeah right right, Like who would know? But it's just fun.
- 1:09:49Uh. Milo actually jumped the five feet because Jack Russell Cherry is apparently jumped
- 1:09:57very high. And uh, that's a spicy me. The ball was from
- 1:10:02an Elka Seltzer commercial that and famously the actor in that had to eat spaghetti
- 1:10:09for over sixty takes because he kept blowing his one line. One memorable version
- 1:10:14was Mommy, that's a spicy mice ball. Wow. Do you think he
- 1:10:21just really was hungry, and so he was like shucks, yeah, to
- 1:10:28take again. Yeah, that that was funny. That's a spicy mice ball.
- 1:10:32And he was like, damn it, why can't I do no more
- 1:10:36spaghetti for me? I guess sixty takes of spaghetti. Wow, that's a
- 1:10:42lot. That's probably too many takes or not enough. Anyway, that was
- 1:10:47all the trivia that I had, Rob, did you have any I just
- 1:10:50had a couple people who were up for other roles and it looks like.
- 1:10:55Prior to Cameron Diez landing the role of Tina Carlisle, the producers had originally
- 1:10:59suggested Anna Nicole Smith. Oh see, that would have been bad. Probably
- 1:11:04it would have been bad well, because she ended up doing wasn't It Naked
- 1:11:08Gun? Third thirty three thirty? That's you said, You're right, So
- 1:11:15that's funny. She wasn't good in it, really, no, she was
- 1:11:18not. And then my favorite Chris Elliott was considered for the role of Steady
- 1:11:26Eddie. That's funny. You love Chris Elliott. I don't which, No,
- 1:11:31Steady Eddie. I think he was one of the like the Tim Bagley,
- 1:11:36one of the car repair men guys. I think, I don't know.
- 1:11:42Searching did you have more? I can look here? No, that
- 1:11:45was it. Every while you're looking, I was sweet. Speaking of not
- 1:11:50getting lines writing commercials, have y' all seen the buttery flaky crust thing?
- 1:11:57Yes, Ernie shot incredible. I had not seen it so just a couple
- 1:12:00of years ago and Ernie showed me, and it's unbelievable. It's so good.
- 1:12:05All right, we'll enjoy that together after this bugues. Yeah, I
- 1:12:09love it. I've got the fat kid dancing too cute, We're good,
- 1:12:14We're nice, robing my home videos ready, I love it, I will
- 1:12:19say, And maybe this is worth going and trying to buy any special edition
- 1:12:24to this or something. But I would just love to see deleted scenes and
- 1:12:28outtakes and all the takes, you know, And yes, you know.
- 1:12:32I feel like contractually every Jim Carrey movie should have a gag reel, like
- 1:12:38we should just be able to see that, so they got to be great.
- 1:12:42Well, I'll never forget the credits of Liar Liar the Best, and
- 1:12:48I was hoping that was in this movie. But yeah, here onto me.
- 1:12:55Yeah, it's so fun. I love that nice. I think that's
- 1:13:00everything joshun Day. Will there be a sequel? There was a sequel called
- 1:13:04Son of the Mask Kennedy. I never watched it. There was also a
- 1:13:10cartoon I think that sounds a dog heavily featured. I believe that sounds right.
- 1:13:17Well. When I was looking through uh the I m dB, I
- 1:13:20noticed that they were like they listed an actual music video for Cuban Peter.
- 1:13:27Is just that that scene from the movie or not? But like, I
- 1:13:30guess it got released sick anyway. I mean, it makes sense. I
- 1:13:33said, I went and bought the single. Well, they're pushing it.
- 1:13:38I was wondering watching this time around if this movie had any hand and kind
- 1:13:44of kicking off that like big band resurgence thing that happened, you know,
- 1:13:48because right around this time, you know, like all those big bands,
- 1:13:58squirrel Nut Tippers, you know, and I don't really remember that preceding this,
- 1:14:01but that was such a big question part of this movie. I was
- 1:14:04curious. Yeah, I liked that. That's fun. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:14:11but probably not another one, I guess. Well, yeah, I wouldn't
- 1:14:15be surprised. You know, they're clearly Hollywood's out of ideas if they remake
- 1:14:19it. I mean, then again with help or the Dumb and Dumber two
- 1:14:23went maybe or spoiler alert for your next podcast, but you know, maybe
- 1:14:28not maybe there. I would love it if they'd make another Base Ventura.
- 1:14:33Yeah. I think that Nature Calls was so good. If they such a
- 1:14:39great sequel, And actually I was, you know, like they kind of
- 1:14:44set it up as a possibility because you know, he throws the mask in
- 1:14:48the river and then Ginny goes after it, you know, so I was
- 1:14:51like they kind of left that door open a little bit. They did and
- 1:14:56I don't know what they did with Son of the Mask, if they talked
- 1:14:59about that at all or not. Also didn't see it, but yeah,
- 1:15:02Richard Jenny passed away a long time ago. Yeah, and Cameron Diaz stopped
- 1:15:10acting right back, So maybe what what did she do? What what is
- 1:15:15she doing? Because I did hear that that whatever that Jamie Fox film they're
- 1:15:19doing that he got like sick during so they had to clause it for a
- 1:15:25while. But apparently he was like the one that was able to convince her
- 1:15:28to like come out of retirement. Wow, yeah, because yeah, she
- 1:15:32was gone for a full decade which was crazy. Yeah. Well she like
- 1:15:38left right because she didn't want to deal with like the people telling her how
- 1:15:42to age and just like that whole thing, right, and then she raised
- 1:15:46her kids and stuff. Is that right? I don't know. I don't
- 1:15:48know any of that, right, So presumably she could come back, you
- 1:15:53know, now that haven't been said. Maybe I don't have you know,
- 1:15:57I wouldn't have a lot of faith in a sequel, but I would watch
- 1:16:00it. Yeah, I mean The Mask without a doubt. I'm gonna watch
- 1:16:05it. Yeah, me too, agreed, agreed, All right, Well
- 1:16:12do you guys want to play a game, Yeah, I'd love to.
- 1:16:15I did a starting five. This is where I'm gonna name my five favorite
- 1:16:19actors from a particular film. When you know the film, you ring in
- 1:16:24with your name. If you get it wrong, there won't be any negative
- 1:16:27points, but you won't be able to guess again for that movie. If
- 1:16:30their actors' names are remaining, you can guess those for a point each.
- 1:16:34The other person can steal if you get any of those names wrong. And
- 1:16:40all of these films have something in common. When you know the theme,
- 1:16:43you can ring it at any time for a point. And it might have
- 1:16:45something to do with the mask. Oh and I will say it gets harder.
- 1:16:56It gets harder as it goes. Okay, I heard that? So
- 1:17:01uh yeah, we feel good, we feel strong, we feel ready.
- 1:17:05Yeah yeah, yeah, so confident. All right, Well here comes number
- 1:17:12one. The first name Jeff Daniels Trick, The second name Kate Mara,
