- 0:00Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, Welcome to another episode of Bust with
- 0:02Speaker 1: was very special guest with us Today, we have a
- 0:05Speaker 1: legend of Clay High School, a legend of Dayton College quarterback.
- 0:11Speaker 1: We have a super Bowl winning coach, mister John Jrudin. Hey,
- 0:17Speaker 1: brother sir, we are excited to have you on. Man.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Obviously we just had you in the locker room. That
- 0:22Speaker 1: show's already come out. But your passion, your love for football,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and you never know what some of these personalities you see.
- 0:28Speaker 1: I remember watching you with like the draft experience, and
- 0:31Speaker 1: watching you get up with players and having quarterbacks talk
- 0:34Speaker 1: about it and you got that look in your eyes
- 0:36Speaker 1: like you do right now having them draw things up.
- 0:38Speaker 1: But truly, you truly love, eat, and breathe football. Where
- 0:42Speaker 1: did that passion start?
- 0:43Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 0:43Speaker 3: I do.
- 0:44Speaker 2: That's why I love being here with you guys. My
- 0:46Speaker 2: dad was a coach. My dad coached at Indiana, he
- 0:49Speaker 2: coached at Notre Dame, he coached with the Buccaneers. So
- 0:51Speaker 2: I kind of grew up going to the locker rooms
- 0:54Speaker 2: idolizing players, wanting to be a coach. I played at Dayton.
- 0:57Speaker 2: I wasn't very good. My high school is no longer around.
- 1:00Speaker 2: They closed the doors, So I don't have any I
- 1:02Speaker 2: don't have any tapes to show you or approve what
- 1:04Speaker 2: kind of player I was. But you know, when you
- 1:06Speaker 2: grow up knowing what you want to do at a
- 1:08Speaker 2: young age, and then you have an opportunity to get
- 1:11Speaker 2: your foot in the door. It's just just been that
- 1:13Speaker 2: way from the beginning.
- 1:14Speaker 3: How much of a learning curve was it? Like getting
- 1:16Speaker 3: around your old man and when you were getting integrated
- 1:18Speaker 3: into coaching, just understanding the work that goes into coaching football,
- 1:23Speaker 3: the sacrifice that goes into coaching football, because it's like
- 1:26Speaker 3: you sit there as players, and I've always had aspirations
- 1:29Speaker 3: of coaching, but coordinators, like coaches mine, would always say, hey,
- 1:32Speaker 3: if you find something else to do, you might want
- 1:33Speaker 3: to look into that because all the work you put
- 1:36Speaker 3: in to be a player, it's like, you know, it's
- 1:38Speaker 3: tenfold when you're coaching, because you're there from start to finish,
- 1:40Speaker 3: all around the clock.
- 1:41Speaker 2: I mean, I was lucky because my dad knew people
- 1:44Speaker 2: and I was able to get started probably ahead of
- 1:47Speaker 2: some other guys would And I got started at Tennessee
- 1:50Speaker 2: the volunteers. They were in a sugar bowl. We beat
- 1:53Speaker 2: Vennie Testaverdi. So I got around Walt Harris, a great
- 1:56Speaker 2: offensive coach, and I was lucky man, because when you're
- 1:59Speaker 2: around people that know the game inside and out, that
- 2:02Speaker 2: can set the tone and put you on a routine
- 2:05Speaker 2: and you try to accumulate knowledge every day and challenge you.
- 2:08Speaker 2: That's just the environment I've always been in and one
- 2:11Speaker 2: I've tried to create. So uh, anyways, it goes by fast.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Look look at me now, I'm busting with the boys.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Man hit the big time. All your accomplishments has got
- 2:22Speaker 1: to be top five. When you coach for your graduate assistant,
- 2:27Speaker 1: right for the Tennessee Volunteers. Do you hold any love
- 2:31Speaker 1: for the volunteers now? Are you a fan of the balls?
- 2:33Speaker 1: All the places you coached at, do you like still
- 2:35Speaker 1: hold it near?
- 2:35Speaker 2: Oh God, I love Tennessee. I met my wife there.
- 2:37Speaker 2: My wife cheered at Tennessee. I was a cheerleader. My
- 2:41Speaker 2: wife was dating Johnny Major's son, Johnny Major's legendary coach
- 2:45Speaker 2: at Tennessee. She's dating Coach major son, and they broke
- 2:49Speaker 2: up and I went in for the kill man. But uh,
- 2:52Speaker 2: I absolutely love Knoxville, Tennessee, love the volunteers. We have
- 2:56Speaker 2: property up in the Smoky Mountains, Severeville near Dolly Would
- 3:00Speaker 2: and we go back a lot. We just love it.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Who are in the playoffs too?
- 3:04Speaker 3: Who are your college teams in Tennessee and Indiana? Are
- 3:06Speaker 3: those of the well?
- 3:07Speaker 2: My dad coach at Indiana Notre Dame. I coached at Tennessee,
- 3:10Speaker 2: University of Pacific who dropped football, and Southeast Missouri State,
- 3:15Speaker 2: University of Pittsburgh. You were at Simo Yeah one year?
- 3:19Speaker 2: No shit, Cape, Girardo Man, Yeah.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Bro, I get a little nervous.
- 3:24Speaker 1: I saw when I saw Dayton on the Wikipedia playing
- 3:26Speaker 1: college football there. I was sticking. I wonder if he
- 3:28Speaker 1: has any love for Ohio State. But it seems like
- 3:30Speaker 1: you just stayed in the Indiana category home.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Yeah, pretty much. I mean I loved my experience growing
- 3:34Speaker 2: up in Ohio. My dad coached at Dayton, made a
- 3:37Speaker 2: lot of connections there. What a staff he was on
- 3:39Speaker 2: at Dayton. John McVay, who became the forty nine ers
- 3:42Speaker 2: GM was the head coach. But most of my ties
- 3:45Speaker 2: are places i've coached. Those are the things I can
- 3:48Speaker 2: remember the most.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Yeah, what is your What do you think about this
- 3:52Speaker 3: barstool barstool media world? Yeah?
- 3:54Speaker 2: Man, it's totally different. You know, I never had a
- 3:56Speaker 2: Twitter page, I never had anything. I don't know anything
- 3:59Speaker 2: about social media. I used to give everybody a hard
- 4:02Speaker 2: time about doing it. Now I'm taking selfies, you know,
- 4:05Speaker 2: with George Brett in the airport. I mean, it's it's
- 4:08Speaker 2: really awkward and different. It's a wild game.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Even even when we finish a locker room, you're like, hey,
- 4:13Speaker 1: put your helmet on, let me yell at you.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Yeah, get this on cameras.
- 4:16Speaker 1: It seems like you're diving in the game quickly.
- 4:17Speaker 2: I'm trying. And I got some great guys, as you know,
- 4:20Speaker 2: the guys that run the place, Dave Portnoy. These guys
- 4:23Speaker 2: are interesting, man, They're really creative. To put it mildly,
- 4:28Speaker 2: I got to go on the golfing thing with Frankie
- 4:31Speaker 2: and Trent. We had some people come down to my
- 4:33Speaker 2: office last weekend and I'm I'm I'm anxious to see
- 4:37Speaker 2: what is going to unfold. But I just want to
- 4:39Speaker 2: do good. I want to be part of the team
- 4:41Speaker 2: and try to find my role. If you're not producing,
- 4:45Speaker 2: so I said, I said, give me, get me out
- 4:46Speaker 2: of here. I got my I got a couple of things.
- 4:49Speaker 2: I'm getting better at and this is all part of
- 4:52Speaker 2: the seasoning process. Hanging around with you two guys. You know,
- 4:55Speaker 2: I'll steal some ideas from you. This is a hell
- 4:57Speaker 2: of a setup, man. It's about, you know, telling the truth,
- 5:02Speaker 2: having some fun, making some people laugh, and making them
- 5:05Speaker 2: think outside the box a little bit.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, it's like getting to have this like you know,
- 5:09Speaker 3: we were talking about it, either on the locker room
- 5:11Speaker 3: or outside of it. What you miss the most is
- 5:13Speaker 3: the camaraderie. You missed the locker room. Yeah, Unfortunately, we
- 5:16Speaker 3: get to have people on like yourself, players that are
- 5:18Speaker 3: currently playing ex players to where you still kind of
- 5:21Speaker 3: get that feeling that ball busting and having fun having
- 5:23Speaker 3: some laughs because you do. You just you missed the
- 5:26Speaker 3: locker room so much. When it's over.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Oh it's what you what you can't duplicate, but you
- 5:32Speaker 2: guys are doing a pretty good job of it, you know,
- 5:34Speaker 2: just giving guys shit. That's what I tried to do
- 5:37Speaker 2: every day. I tried to stir the pot.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Man.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I'd come in there one day and try to make
- 5:41Speaker 2: you guys laugh, and I'd go to any extreme measure
- 5:44Speaker 2: I had to go to make you laugh too, because
- 5:45Speaker 2: sometimes you guys are grouchy bastards every day, no doubt.
- 5:48Speaker 2: You know, they need to laugh. Yeah, you gotta make
- 5:51Speaker 2: them laugh. And then the next day I might try
- 5:53Speaker 2: to fire you up, hey luans, you know, you know,
- 5:55Speaker 2: and then the next day you might really try to
- 5:57Speaker 2: piss them off, like I might really try to piss
- 6:00Speaker 2: will component.
- 6:00Speaker 1: So you got seven shades of smoke. When you're coming
- 6:02Speaker 1: in going to get.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Well, you just don't want to just install twenty two,
- 6:06Speaker 2: Hank and here's you know, here's eighteen, Bob. After a while,
- 6:10Speaker 2: you know, you get a little bit bored. You got
- 6:13Speaker 2: to try to make it fun and you try to
- 6:16Speaker 2: stimulate your guys. And I think that's when they play
- 6:18Speaker 2: their best.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Who's the best pot string coach you've been around?
- 6:22Speaker 2: Ray Rhodes. Ray Rhodes was the head coach of the
- 6:25Speaker 2: Eagles when I was the offensive coordinator. He was a
- 6:27Speaker 2: secondary coach of the forty nine ers when it all
- 6:30Speaker 2: started for me. He had Ronnie Lott. He had a
- 6:32Speaker 2: great group back there. He was a combination of Richard Pryor.
- 6:38Speaker 2: He was a comedian and he was a great technician,
- 6:41Speaker 2: a great technical football guy. But he would create analogies.
- 6:46Speaker 2: He would speak in analogies that were awesome, and he
- 6:49Speaker 2: used those analogies and his teaching methods. Ray Rhodes was phenomenal.
- 6:54Speaker 2: One of the great coaches I've ever been around.
- 6:57Speaker 3: What about motivator?
- 6:59Speaker 2: Yeah, motivation, motivation, I uh, i'd be a hard one.
- 7:03Speaker 2: I'd have to think about that for a minute. But
- 7:06Speaker 2: I've been around some good ones. About you. Who's the
- 7:08Speaker 2: best motivator You've been around?
- 7:11Speaker 3: But I mean, Bo Polini was a hell of a motivator,
- 7:13Speaker 3: I bet dude, honestly, Like I've told Taylor this. I
- 7:16Speaker 3: don't know if I've said it on the bus, but
- 7:19Speaker 3: you are a hell of a motivator. I mean when
- 7:21Speaker 3: you're what was that When I came out there, it
- 7:23Speaker 3: was like my seventh year and you're a veteran. You're
- 7:26Speaker 3: coming out midyear, and usually, like when you're a vet
- 7:28Speaker 3: and you've you've had some years in the league, you've
- 7:30Speaker 3: heard everybody speak, you've heard all the speeches and everything else.
- 7:33Speaker 3: But I remember you just had us after a practice
- 7:35Speaker 3: one day and it was getting my piss hot, and
- 7:37Speaker 3: it was like one of those things You're like, Yo,
- 7:39Speaker 3: this is the fucking you hear all this stuff about
- 7:41Speaker 3: John Gruden and everything else. Now I get to play
- 7:43Speaker 3: for him, and uh, you walk away from just that
- 7:46Speaker 3: that post meeting motivational Talkie gave, and it is it's
- 7:50Speaker 3: one of those things because then coaches try to do
- 7:52Speaker 3: it and it's like you understand what they're trying to do,
- 7:54Speaker 3: but it's not like it's not getting you fired up
- 7:56Speaker 3: or it's not making you think. You're like, oh, I
- 7:57Speaker 3: wonder what, I wonder what Taylor thought about this speech?
- 7:59Speaker 3: You of go and laugh about it. But you were
- 8:01Speaker 3: somebody that always felt like you had the right words,
- 8:04Speaker 3: the right tone, the right time, And so I would say,
- 8:07Speaker 3: I would say yourself, coach Vrabel, he can get going.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Uh, your brother Rabel was more of a matter of
- 8:13Speaker 1: fact yeah, but very expressing to you, like the keys
- 8:19Speaker 1: to the game. But in a way they were like,
- 8:20Speaker 1: fuck af we just do these three four things were
- 8:23Speaker 1: going to.
- 8:24Speaker 3: And the night before a game when he'd start running
- 8:26Speaker 3: a highlight table, like you tell us they're talking about
- 8:28Speaker 3: us this way, they're talking about us that way. Tell
- 8:30Speaker 3: me we can't block on the edge, tell me we
- 8:32Speaker 3: can't make plays in space, tell me we're not you know,
- 8:34Speaker 3: all those different things. They get that would get you
- 8:36Speaker 3: fired up. Your brother he was more of a he
- 8:38Speaker 3: was more of a comedian.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:39Speaker 3: He would take some like rap lyrics or song lyrics
- 8:41Speaker 3: and bring it out and we'd like have fun. Jay's awesome.
- 8:44Speaker 2: You know a lot of times. Let's the assistant coaches.
- 8:46Speaker 2: I remember when I was in Tampa. We all know
- 8:48Speaker 2: Mike Tomlin now is the head coach. He's a great motivator.
- 8:52Speaker 2: You should hear him in the room with his secondary guys.
- 8:54Speaker 2: When I was coaching for the Bucks. He was a
- 8:56Speaker 2: great motive. But Rond Barber, John Lynch, he had those
- 8:59Speaker 2: guys frothing at the mouth. Rod Marinelli, our d line coach, Yeah,
- 9:04Speaker 2: was phenomenal. Some of my really you know, bad words
- 9:08Speaker 2: I learned I learned from Marinelli. Al Davis was a
- 9:11Speaker 2: great motivator and he used any method to get you
- 9:14Speaker 2: fired up.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Masacia Casatia is good.
- 9:16Speaker 2: I think you try to hire guys that can handle
- 9:20Speaker 2: their players. I hate assistant coaches that come into your Hey,
- 9:23Speaker 2: we Taylor Luwan was three minutes late. Hey, Will Compton
- 9:27Speaker 2: wasn't paying attention in the meeting room. Go get them
- 9:30Speaker 2: to pay attention. You know, that's your job. You know
- 9:32Speaker 2: what I mean, I like coaches that can run the
- 9:35Speaker 2: show and really get these guys charged up in their
- 9:39Speaker 2: in their own individual worlds.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Yeah, when it came to coaching and you're talking about
- 9:42Speaker 1: like one day you would try to make guys laugh,
- 9:44Speaker 1: then motivate, then piss them off. What like, how did
- 9:48Speaker 1: you learn that I need to go about these different
- 9:50Speaker 1: ways to motivate different players? Like was that something you
- 9:52Speaker 1: knew right away as a coach by watching your dad
- 9:55Speaker 1: or is that something you gained over time?
- 9:56Speaker 2: Well, pretty much, you're not when you're the head coach.
- 9:58Speaker 2: You're not just motivating the left tackle. You're not just
- 10:01Speaker 2: going into a team meeting to motivate the quarterback or
- 10:04Speaker 2: the wide receiver. You're trying to get everybody on a
- 10:08Speaker 2: common thread. Everybody's got to see this together. And you know,
- 10:14Speaker 2: I just think the more camaraderie you can generate, the
- 10:18Speaker 2: better chance you have. It's a long season, and I
- 10:20Speaker 2: think it's it's important to laugh at each other, you know,
- 10:24Speaker 2: get guys up there, have them talk for a minute
- 10:26Speaker 2: or two balls, bust each other's balls, including your own.
- 10:30Speaker 2: And that worked for me for a while, But I
- 10:33Speaker 2: think I pissed some people off and Unfortunately, that's the
- 10:36Speaker 2: way it goes.
- 10:36Speaker 3: When now talk about talk about you pivoting throughout your
- 10:41Speaker 3: career because the game is a lot different now you're
- 10:43Speaker 3: busting our balls. You guys are much more sensitive these days.
- 10:46Speaker 3: We had we had Mike Alstott on the bus and
- 10:48Speaker 3: he's talking about how soft the league is now, Like,
- 10:51Speaker 3: how have you had to kind of adapt your philosophies
- 10:53Speaker 3: over time?
- 10:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I did Monday night football for nine
- 10:56Speaker 2: years and during those nine years I got away from
- 11:00Speaker 2: the Players' Association. How practices have changed. You know, you
- 11:04Speaker 2: can't hit the quarterback below the leg. A lot of
- 11:06Speaker 2: different rules have come in players safety big issue, but
- 11:11Speaker 2: the big thing is coming back and coaching. You have
- 11:14Speaker 2: to adapt to the rules, but you still have to
- 11:18Speaker 2: push the envelope. You got to create repetitions, repetitions the
- 11:22Speaker 2: mother are learning, whether it be walkedthroughs, whatever it is.
- 11:25Speaker 2: We have to develop players, and you guys will admit
- 11:29Speaker 2: these college kids coming out, they are not as far
- 11:32Speaker 2: along as people think they are. A lot of these
- 11:34Speaker 2: guys are transferring year to year. They're only one year starters.
- 11:39Speaker 2: They're really raw and you need time to spend with them.
- 11:42Speaker 2: But you got to push the envelope. You got to
- 11:44Speaker 2: adapt to the circumstances that are laid out for you.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Go ahead.
- 11:47Speaker 1: We would know. We were talking about the transfer of
- 11:49Speaker 1: the NI on the last episode of Busting with the Boys,
- 11:51Speaker 1: how it's got to be so difficult as a college
- 11:55Speaker 1: coach to go up to a player and be like,
- 11:56Speaker 1: these are the things you need to work on and
- 11:57Speaker 1: be a little bit harder on them, a little more
- 11:59Speaker 1: tough them, because it's like, I'm just gonna go somewhere
- 12:01Speaker 1: else get paid the same amount. Do you think there's
- 12:03Speaker 1: going to be like a drop in the talent level
- 12:07Speaker 1: in the NFL the next five to seven years with
- 12:09Speaker 1: guys not kind of, because you have to be forging
- 12:12Speaker 1: fire a little bit. When it comes to college. You
- 12:13Speaker 1: have to go through the ship, the six am winter
- 12:16Speaker 1: conditioning type of situations, and a lot of guys when
- 12:18Speaker 1: it get too difficult now, they'll just leave and if
- 12:20Speaker 1: they're not pressed to move forward and grow, they're gonna
- 12:23Speaker 1: be a less than player. Do you think there's gonna
- 12:25Speaker 1: be a you'll see toughness, yeah, raw without mental tough We.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Well, we just said the thing I think is the
- 12:31Speaker 2: key ingredient in being a pro football player. It's mental toughness.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I don't care where you go, what round, or who
- 12:37Speaker 2: you play for. You're gonna get your ass knocked off
- 12:40Speaker 2: in the NFL and the media is gonna jump on
- 12:42Speaker 2: you the That's just the reality of it. And if
- 12:45Speaker 2: you don't have mental toughness to lean on, you're out.
- 12:47Speaker 2: You're gonna be gone early. But I worry about the
- 12:51Speaker 2: state of college football, what we're doing. I mean, these
- 12:53Speaker 2: guys are pulling out of bowl games. Guys are in
- 12:56Speaker 2: the nil portal before the season is over. How would
- 13:00Speaker 2: you look at your teammate if you had a left
- 13:02Speaker 2: guard playing next year at Michigan. It's entering the portal
- 13:05Speaker 2: before you play in a bowl game. That would probably
- 13:06Speaker 2: piss you off.
- 13:07Speaker 3: It's totally the playoff, Like the portal's open now. It's
- 13:10Speaker 3: like these teams are going to try and make a
- 13:12Speaker 3: push to win a national title, and you got guys
- 13:14Speaker 3: kind of flirting with the next girl. Yeah, that's crazy.
- 13:19Speaker 1: It's got to be just because when Will and I
- 13:21Speaker 1: were in college, it was you pick a school, you're
- 13:23Speaker 1: at that school for four years. If you want to transfer,
- 13:25Speaker 1: you have to sit out for a year and lose
- 13:26Speaker 1: a year of eligibility, So there's a lot of risk
- 13:29Speaker 1: if you want to make it that dramatic of a change.
- 13:32Speaker 1: So you either, you know, buy in or get the
- 13:34Speaker 1: fuck out. And I could not imagine sitting next to
- 13:38Speaker 1: a left guard or a tight end and blocking with
- 13:41Speaker 1: them while they're like going gonna go to some other school,
- 13:44Speaker 1: whether it's in the SEC or another school in.
- 13:45Speaker 3: The Big Ten.
- 13:46Speaker 1: That's got to be difficult for players to deal with.
- 13:48Speaker 3: The worst one would be just knowing a guy's bitch
- 13:50Speaker 3: about the situation and you're trying to go, like win
- 13:52Speaker 3: a football game.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like, brother, we're trying to win this game.
- 13:55Speaker 1: That's all matters. And Will and I are a big
- 13:57Speaker 1: drink the kool aid. Guys like we when we were
- 13:59Speaker 1: playing our sport on our team, it was like we're
- 14:01Speaker 1: living and breathing and dying for that team.
- 14:03Speaker 2: I really didn't want our scouts to bring in a
- 14:06Speaker 2: lot of players that were transferred players, guys that quit
- 14:10Speaker 2: at Michigan and went to Notre Dame and went from
- 14:12Speaker 2: the I wanted guys that were finishers that started and
- 14:15Speaker 2: finished the job, signed up and executed their mission. Now
- 14:19Speaker 2: you're going to have to adapt to that philosophy. You're
- 14:23Speaker 2: going to have to take some guys that are bouncing around.
- 14:25Speaker 2: But I've met with some of these kids that have
- 14:28Speaker 2: entered the portal and a lot of it has to
- 14:30Speaker 2: do with their situation. They don't have money, they don't
- 14:33Speaker 2: have two parents, they weren't raised with everything given to them,
- 14:36Speaker 2: they don't have any money, and all of a sudden,
- 14:38Speaker 2: you get somebody off you seven hundred thousand or six
- 14:40Speaker 2: hundred thousand dollars. You can't blame these guys for chasing
- 14:44Speaker 2: their dream and improving our family situation.
- 14:47Speaker 1: And if you never had money before, it's hard to
- 14:49Speaker 1: look at seven hundred thousand dollars and say no, I'm
- 14:50Speaker 1: going to hold out and wait. Yeah, there's another train
- 14:53Speaker 1: of thought too. It's like, if you've been broke your
- 14:54Speaker 1: whole life, what's being broke a couple more years and
- 14:56Speaker 1: being a part of something special. Yeah, that's kind of
- 14:58Speaker 1: the selling point. If you're a Kenny Dealingham from ASU,
- 15:01Speaker 1: it's like, listen, we can't offer you all the money
- 15:03Speaker 1: in the world, but there's something special going on here
- 15:06Speaker 1: and eventually you're gonna make that money. It's it's just
- 15:09Speaker 1: hard man.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Yeah, they just need to find a way to not
- 15:11Speaker 3: make it free agency all year round.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Yeah, because the coach all recruit.
- 15:14Speaker 3: You're already recruit your ass off to get the next
- 15:16Speaker 3: guys in, but you got to recruit your ass off
- 15:17Speaker 3: for the guys that are there. And then these portal
- 15:20Speaker 3: situations and opportunities open up, like while you're in the
- 15:22Speaker 3: middle of a season. So I just feel like something,
- 15:25Speaker 3: there's got to be a solution that's gonna come.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Well, you guys come from a big time. You guys
- 15:29Speaker 2: come from Nebraska, Michigan. I played at Dayton. You know
- 15:32Speaker 2: I got friends at coach in the Mid American Conference.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Just picture yourself at Toledo or Western Michigan or Kent State.
- 15:39Speaker 2: You're coaching your ass off. You find these players that
- 15:42Speaker 2: aren't five star players, that are maybe one star players.
- 15:45Speaker 2: You feed them, you develop them, and as they become
- 15:47Speaker 2: all conference players in the Mid American League, sophomores or juniors,
- 15:52Speaker 2: here comes Nebraska, here comes Michigan. You take all my players, man,
- 15:56Speaker 2: and you pay them, And what do I get? You
- 15:58Speaker 2: know what I get? I get nothing that pisses me off. Man.
- 16:02Speaker 2: So the smaller schools are the ones that are getting
- 16:06Speaker 2: punched in the mouth, and you know that's just part
- 16:09Speaker 2: of the program.
- 16:09Speaker 3: Right now. The friends and coaches that you know and
- 16:11Speaker 3: have are they is like some of their philosophy just
- 16:15Speaker 3: recruiting guys about hey you can be this could be
- 16:17Speaker 3: a steping zone. I'll get you to the next league.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean recruiting now is it's a totally different deal.
- 16:22Speaker 2: You got some guy walking in your office that's managing. Hey,
- 16:26Speaker 2: I got Taylor Luwe and Will Compton. This guy's represent
- 16:31Speaker 2: you to guys and he's telling me, Hey, if you
- 16:33Speaker 2: want Luwan and Compton, you got to pay him this
- 16:36Speaker 2: and pay him that. And if you pay me, I'll
- 16:39Speaker 2: make sure you get these two guys. So now you're
- 16:42Speaker 2: dealing out. You're dealing with a lot of variables that
- 16:44Speaker 2: has nothing to do with football, and it's a problem.
- 16:48Speaker 3: It's a problem. That's a good point.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Did you tweet something yesterday about agents seeking twenty percent?
- 16:54Speaker 3: Yeah, Look, there's there are agencies and I mean you
- 16:58Speaker 3: were with CAA, Like, there's a agencies where you get
- 17:00Speaker 3: like in the NFL, it's bigger contracts, bigger money to
- 17:03Speaker 3: where you're paying them one to three percent. And then
- 17:05Speaker 3: if you have like a marketing rep. There's there's like
- 17:07Speaker 3: a ten to twenty percent cut that they take if
- 17:09Speaker 3: they were to get your twist the tea or body armor,
- 17:12Speaker 3: you know what I mean to be like in a commercial.
- 17:14Speaker 3: So I understand that there are quality agencies that command
- 17:18Speaker 3: ten to twenty percent in total off of you know,
- 17:21Speaker 3: two three hundred thousand dollars. I understand that the problem
- 17:24Speaker 3: I have is knowing that you have and you learned
- 17:26Speaker 3: about in college, that these runners that take place, like
- 17:29Speaker 3: you could be represented by Coach Gruden. He's your agent,
- 17:32Speaker 3: he's your agency. I could be somebody that goes to Tennessee,
- 17:35Speaker 3: Nebraska and Michigan just doing my own thing and getting
- 17:39Speaker 3: your market understanding. Hey, if Taylor hit the portal, what
- 17:42Speaker 3: would he be worth? Four hundred thousand, five hundred thousand,
- 17:44Speaker 3: six hundred thousand dollars? And then I DM and message
- 17:46Speaker 3: you and start to poach and do all these things,
- 17:48Speaker 3: and I know nothing about your situation, your experience anything.
- 17:52Speaker 3: I'm just trying to make a quick buck off you
- 17:54Speaker 3: because I know I can get twenty percent if I
- 17:55Speaker 3: start dangling these carrots in front of you, like, hey,
- 17:58Speaker 3: I know you're with him making three hundred thousand, but
- 17:59Speaker 3: I'm telling you right now and feeling the temperature out there,
- 18:01Speaker 3: you can make up to seven hundred thousand if you
- 18:03Speaker 3: come with me. And so there's just so many muddy waters.
- 18:06Speaker 3: Nobody's out there, you know, telling all the truth of
- 18:09Speaker 3: it all because everybody it's just an open market. The
- 18:11Speaker 3: business has got to figure itself out. College football has
- 18:13Speaker 3: got to step in and put some parameters somewhere, and guys, unfortunately,
- 18:17Speaker 3: are gonna have to kids are gonna have to, unfortunately
- 18:18Speaker 3: learn the hard way at times. It's gonna have to
- 18:20Speaker 3: sort it self out. But that's like the issue I
- 18:22Speaker 3: have is knowing that I get it. It's a business,
- 18:25Speaker 3: it's an open market. We live in a free market.
- 18:27Speaker 3: We want players to get paid. College Foe makes millions
- 18:30Speaker 3: and billions of dollars off this stuff. I understand all that.
- 18:33Speaker 3: But we know at the same time too, like we
- 18:35Speaker 3: were those players. We were those guys in college, and
- 18:37Speaker 3: you understand how important development is, how important adversity is,
- 18:40Speaker 3: how important being forged in the fire is. And maybe
- 18:43Speaker 3: you are in a situation where, hey, you should transfer.
- 18:45Speaker 3: There's a lot of guys that just get the wrong
- 18:46Speaker 3: information and bad information and they're getting bad mentoring, or
- 18:50Speaker 3: they're getting no mentoring at all. They're just chasing money
- 18:52Speaker 3: when it's like, you know, I just hate to see
- 18:55Speaker 3: that happen with kids. I like to see that happen
- 18:57Speaker 3: with college football because it hurts the product and ultimately
- 18:59Speaker 3: leads into the NFL to where that's you know, that
- 19:02Speaker 3: becomes a bad product because the fundamentals and technique is off.
- 19:05Speaker 3: It's way worse just because of the quality. These kids
- 19:08Speaker 3: aren't going and choosing football because they want to be
- 19:12Speaker 3: great football players. They want to, they think they want to,
- 19:15Speaker 3: but then they get bedazzled by money and everything else.
- 19:17Speaker 3: And again I understand it. I just hate this wild
- 19:20Speaker 3: West that we're living in because it's hard to figure
- 19:22Speaker 3: out what this NIL world is because nobody really talks
- 19:24Speaker 3: about it whole lot. There's a lot of shit that
- 19:26Speaker 3: goes on.
- 19:27Speaker 2: That was really fucking well. I mean, that was well
- 19:29Speaker 2: said right there.
- 19:30Speaker 3: I mean think about it, like, you know, coach Norvale,
- 19:32Speaker 3: he's with Colorado State, he was kind of talking on it.
- 19:34Speaker 3: But coaches can't speak on it too much because you
- 19:36Speaker 3: don't know all the legality is going on. Right you're
- 19:38Speaker 3: in with the NIL collective, like they have their own
- 19:40Speaker 3: stories and drama. Coaches understand what their situation is. Players
- 19:45Speaker 3: understand what their situation. It's just it's fucking bizarre right now.
- 19:48Speaker 1: And as a coach, as a college coach, your whole
- 19:50Speaker 1: thing with these young players is eighteen to twenty two
- 19:52Speaker 1: year olds is all about limiting distractions. And when we
- 19:54Speaker 1: were you know, oh, now I was nine to thirteen,
- 19:57Speaker 1: you were eight to twelve. Yeah, when you're there in college,
- 20:00Speaker 1: then it's it's a game of like limiting distractions with alcohol,
- 20:03Speaker 1: with assholes and women like that. Those are the those
- 20:05Speaker 1: are the big three pillars. Now you're throwing money in
- 20:08Speaker 1: the whole thing too, because as a as a player,
- 20:10Speaker 1: you're looking at that pot of gold at the end
- 20:13Speaker 1: of the of the dark tunnel. But now there's little
- 20:15Speaker 1: flickers of lights with a little bag here, a little
- 20:17Speaker 1: back there that can get you on the wrong path.
- 20:19Speaker 1: And then you don't get fours in the fire, you
- 20:21Speaker 1: lose a technique and you become a lesser football player.
- 20:23Speaker 1: That hurts you in the end that when you're twenty
- 20:26Speaker 1: five years old, a couple of years in the league,
- 20:27Speaker 1: that second contract might not be as good, which would
- 20:29Speaker 1: be way more money than you would have ever made
- 20:31Speaker 1: in college. So it's a it's a whole thing.
- 20:33Speaker 3: I just I just hate the money hungry.
- 20:35Speaker 2: It makes it interesting, though, because really interesting. Man is
- 20:39Speaker 2: sitting here looking at you two guys on this bus. Man,
- 20:42Speaker 2: I mean I've known you guys as players and I've
- 20:45Speaker 2: seen you guys on this bus. And to think that
- 20:48Speaker 2: you guys have turned this into I mean an unbelievable deal.
- 20:53Speaker 2: I mean, you guys are killing that. I just I
- 20:55Speaker 2: hate to interrupt you guys and change subjects, but this
- 20:58Speaker 2: nil kind of rubbs me wrong. But you know, success
- 21:01Speaker 2: on the field is one thing, but transitioning, Like I
- 21:04Speaker 2: just for all the young guys out there, can you
- 21:07Speaker 2: just tell me how you transitioned into this thing right
- 21:10Speaker 2: here and have created and reinvented yourselves here. This is
- 21:13Speaker 2: pretty freaking cool man.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Yeah, if you want to take the first part of that, yeah,
- 21:16Speaker 1: because it's a story We've told a lot on the bus.
- 21:18Speaker 1: But it is just cool.
- 21:20Speaker 2: But a lot of players, you know, they get out
- 21:22Speaker 2: of football, they kind of search for their next game,
- 21:26Speaker 2: their next thing. How did you guys do this?
- 21:28Speaker 3: Yeah? I speaking for myself, I feel like I was
- 21:31Speaker 3: in I was in year six with the Tennessee Titans,
- 21:34Speaker 3: and you know, coach, like when I got to play
- 21:35Speaker 3: for you, like I cut my teeth into the league
- 21:38Speaker 3: with your brother at Washington. And in my situation, if
- 21:42Speaker 3: I'm a backup and a special teams guy, I don't
- 21:44Speaker 3: want anybody to get hurt. But if I'm gonna get
- 21:46Speaker 3: my opportunity, you know, you're gonna need the guy to
- 21:49Speaker 3: go down in front of you and then hey, I
- 21:50Speaker 3: get to show them what I'm about. I can show
- 21:52Speaker 3: them that I can rock the Green dot, do all
- 21:53Speaker 3: those things. And so when I didn't get that opportunity
- 21:56Speaker 3: in my sixth year, I'm kind of sitting there with myself.
- 21:59Speaker 3: You know, there's things I'm interesting it in. I know
- 22:00Speaker 3: I want to coach have interest in like the real estate.
- 22:03Speaker 3: You're trying to You're trying to figure out where your
- 22:05Speaker 3: curiosities go because at some point the game is going
- 22:07Speaker 3: to end. It's going to end sooner than you think.
- 22:09Speaker 3: It's probably not going to end on your terms like
- 22:11Speaker 3: most guys. And so just knowing that I loved podcasting,
- 22:15Speaker 3: I end up asking Taylor if he wanted to start
- 22:17Speaker 3: a podcast with me. He was all in, And I'm
- 22:20Speaker 3: kind of thinking to myself, like, people do make money
- 22:22Speaker 3: in this podcasting world. If we could, you know, if
- 22:24Speaker 3: we could you know, have the uh, if we're able
- 22:28Speaker 3: to spin it and transition and use this as a
- 22:31Speaker 3: transitional point, like how great would that be? And so
- 22:34Speaker 3: for me, it was like, all right, I'm going to
- 22:36Speaker 3: start a podcast. I could play myself out of the
- 22:38Speaker 3: league because nobody in the NFL world's really doing it.
- 22:41Speaker 3: McAfee retired to go into barstool Media and then the
- 22:44Speaker 3: media in general. But nobody's really doing it. And I
- 22:46Speaker 3: know how coaches and I know how front office and
- 22:48Speaker 3: people can feel about players being on a public platform,
- 22:52Speaker 3: especially when it's like I'm not. I wasn't in a
- 22:54Speaker 3: situation where I'm getting a big second contract like I
- 22:56Speaker 3: was going into that offseason knowing I was going to
- 22:58Speaker 3: be a ninety man guy having a fifty three roster
- 23:01Speaker 3: and who wants any of that luggage or extra drama.
- 23:03Speaker 3: So I'm like, if I play myself out of the league,
- 23:05Speaker 3: but it's you know, if we're able to transition and
- 23:07Speaker 3: create something, like you know, then that's just the risk
- 23:10Speaker 3: that I'll take. Fortunately, I got to continue doing it
- 23:13Speaker 3: and being on the podcast doing the podcast, being on
- 23:15Speaker 3: the bus, going to play for you, playing with the
- 23:17Speaker 3: Tites again and doing it for a few more years.
- 23:19Speaker 3: But ultimately for me it was like, hey, this game
- 23:21Speaker 3: is going to end at some point. I need to
- 23:23Speaker 3: understand where my interests are, where my curiosity lies, and
- 23:27Speaker 3: try to do whatever I can to have the autonomy
- 23:29Speaker 3: to do it myself before I have to go like
- 23:31Speaker 3: work for the man, and who knows if I'm working
- 23:33Speaker 3: for the man, if it's going to be in the
- 23:34Speaker 3: right situation. When you're done playing football, we get catered
- 23:37Speaker 3: to our entire lives. The structures there, You get a
- 23:40Speaker 3: motivational speech, you understand how tough it is, you want
- 23:42Speaker 3: to be forging the fire. You have all those skills
- 23:45Speaker 3: to transition. However, you don't get the highs of playing
- 23:48Speaker 3: at that elite level of the NFL, right going out
- 23:52Speaker 3: there on prime time, winning with the band of brothers.
- 23:55Speaker 3: And when that gets pulled away, a lot of guys
- 23:57Speaker 3: struggle because it's like, where's our next roller coaster, Where's
- 24:01Speaker 3: our next high We played on such a high level.
- 24:03Speaker 3: The logo even though they tell you, Coach Gruden, you
- 24:07Speaker 3: know you guys got to sacrifice for this logo. Everything
- 24:11Speaker 3: you guys pour into this. We're doing it for a team, team, team, team.
- 24:15Speaker 3: The minute the team is you're not on the team anymore.
- 24:19Speaker 3: That logo isn't calling you back to make sure you
- 24:21Speaker 3: get your next job. So it's all about how can
- 24:24Speaker 3: we control our situation. And I feel like we've been
- 24:26Speaker 3: able to create Busting with the Boys, and it's been
- 24:28Speaker 3: incredible because the big thing you miss when you leave
- 24:30Speaker 3: is the locker room, right, We've gotten to create something
- 24:32Speaker 3: off that. But that's like, that was like my train
- 24:35Speaker 3: of thought going into Busting with you.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's it's interesting because you kind of see,
- 24:39Speaker 1: like Will and I's pass how different they were entering
- 24:41Speaker 1: the NFL, Because when I got a scholarship offer in Scottsdale,
- 24:45Speaker 1: Arizona for the first time, it's from Utah State. Right
- 24:47Speaker 1: then and there, I thought to myself, I'm going to
- 24:49Speaker 1: the NFL. Like that is now my my path of
- 24:51Speaker 1: life has now is very clear.
- 24:53Speaker 3: And as a.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Football player who lives breeze and eats and loves the
- 24:56Speaker 1: game of football, you truly think the most audible death
- 24:59Speaker 1: is probably to die in between the hashes, Like that
- 25:02Speaker 1: is kind of the way you want to go. You like,
- 25:04Speaker 1: you look in the mirror before a game with tears
- 25:06Speaker 1: in your eyes and you think if today is the day.
- 25:08Speaker 1: I go like, it's a good fucking day and it's
- 25:11Speaker 1: time to go out there. So for me, I was
- 25:13Speaker 1: always a guy that's like I was never focused on
- 25:15Speaker 1: what's next. I was always focused on right now, and
- 25:17Speaker 1: it was, you know, playing well and getting to the NFL.
- 25:20Speaker 1: So I go to Michigan, I become a first round pick,
- 25:22Speaker 1: and when Will Compton comes to the Tennessee Titans, I
- 25:25Speaker 1: just signed the biggest deal in NFL history for an
- 25:27Speaker 1: offensive lineman. To me, everything is going according to plan,
- 25:30Speaker 1: where I'm not seeing the inevitable end of what every
- 25:34Speaker 1: player has to go through. Even if you're Tom Brady
- 25:36Speaker 1: who can beat Father Time, like you were always going
- 25:39Speaker 1: to the game's always going to walk away from you
- 25:42Speaker 1: before you walk away from it. So when Will approaches
- 25:44Speaker 1: me about doing a podcast, I'm thinking to myself, dude,
- 25:47Speaker 1: like I guess and I just in my head I
- 25:49Speaker 1: canmpartmentalize it as like well, people do real estate, people
- 25:52Speaker 1: do stocks, Like this is the same thing. It's just
- 25:54Speaker 1: an investment. I just happen to be in the public
- 25:57Speaker 1: eye and you mentioned it in the locker room. I'm
- 25:59Speaker 1: not like you're stereotypical offense lineman, a scene not heard
- 26:02Speaker 1: type of guy. I'm very much seen and very much heard.
- 26:05Speaker 1: So like it was an opportunity for me to kind
- 26:06Speaker 1: of like allow this personality to come out. And it
- 26:09Speaker 1: was like, you know, to me, I thought like, I
- 26:11Speaker 1: don't know what this is going to be. This might
- 26:13Speaker 1: be just a fun little game.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Guys, take a couple of video games in there at home.
- 26:16Speaker 3: It's like you're coming in.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Yeah, just coming coming, ripping a podcast. And it turned
- 26:20Speaker 1: into this and it couldn't have happened at a better time.
- 26:23Speaker 1: I remember I bought so the house I live in now.
- 26:26Speaker 1: I bought the land and I was building and Will
- 26:28Speaker 1: and I were walking around the property and it was right,
- 26:30Speaker 1: it was like right before the season or right after
- 26:32Speaker 1: the season, and it Will was like, this is my
- 26:33Speaker 1: last year. I don't want to do it again. I
- 26:35Speaker 1: played that game with him for three more years. Every
- 26:37Speaker 1: year it was this is my last year. I don't
- 26:38Speaker 1: want to do it again. And then it was like,
- 26:40Speaker 1: you know, maybe they could sneak in get rid of camp.
- 26:42Speaker 1: And then he started playing the game and so like
- 26:45Speaker 1: while we're both still playing in the NFL, Bustin's kind
- 26:48Speaker 1: of just like chugging along and grow getting more and
- 26:51Speaker 1: more followers and people are more we go into all
- 26:54Speaker 1: barstool early and often, which you're gonna come to find out,
- 26:56Speaker 1: is like the greatest teacher in this world. It's that
- 27:00Speaker 1: gives you the ability to be yourself unapologetically be yourself
- 27:03Speaker 1: the good and the bad, and be everyone be like,
- 27:06Speaker 1: that's all right, You're a part of Barslool. You can
- 27:08Speaker 1: do whatever you want here.
- 27:09Speaker 3: And so it is.
- 27:11Speaker 1: It's interesting how it all turned out, and you just
- 27:13Speaker 1: got to look back and you're like, it's kind of
- 27:15Speaker 1: fucking crazy. Like in my mind, I'm like I kind
- 27:16Speaker 1: of just lucked into this. I kind of just like
- 27:19Speaker 1: fell into meeting Will, and Will wanted to do this
- 27:21Speaker 1: and he didn't. He wanted the safety blanket of doing
- 27:23Speaker 1: with somebody else and I.
- 27:24Speaker 3: Have I mean, we had safety chemistry too.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it's beautiful.
- 27:27Speaker 3: Like when you signed the big deal, there's a part
- 27:29Speaker 3: in my brain I'm like, well, the team won't be
- 27:30Speaker 3: able to touch him because he's the highest paid player
- 27:32Speaker 3: on their team. Hey, if I play myself out, I'm
- 27:35Speaker 3: just not going to get a phone call again. Yeah,
- 27:37Speaker 3: it's like, fuck it. Let's just knew we had three
- 27:38Speaker 3: years of guarantee to do what.
- 27:39Speaker 1: We want to.
- 27:40Speaker 3: End up working out, ended up working out for it,
- 27:43Speaker 3: ends up calling and I go out to I go
- 27:44Speaker 3: out to Oakland.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Yeah, but you've dealt a lot of transition too when
- 27:47Speaker 1: you were going from the NFL into commentating, Like a
- 27:50Speaker 1: lot of coaches try to do that. A lot of
- 27:52Speaker 1: coaches try to dip their toe into the media space.
- 27:54Speaker 1: But you came in and you murdered it.
- 27:56Speaker 3: The ability to know.
- 27:56Speaker 1: What every player's college they went to and their mascot,
- 27:59Speaker 1: and you just talk about guys as if you've known
- 28:01Speaker 1: them for twenty years. How did how was that transition
- 28:03Speaker 1: for you from going from coaching to media.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Well, I was a communications major in college. I always
- 28:10Speaker 2: wanted to do the news. I always wanted to be
- 28:12Speaker 2: a sportscaster. Really if I wasn't going to coach. Oh,
- 28:16Speaker 2: excuse me.
- 28:17Speaker 1: If you want to answer that too, DD, whatever you
- 28:19Speaker 1: gotta do. Yet you kind of want to take that,
- 28:22Speaker 1: don't you.
- 28:22Speaker 2: No, I'm sorry I didn't turn it off. But Mike
- 28:25Speaker 2: Tariko was the key for me. I mean, I got
- 28:28Speaker 2: I got fired. I was really humbled. I was really down,
- 28:33Speaker 2: and the NFL network called me and asked me to
- 28:35Speaker 2: come to the combine and do some segments covering the combine.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Steve mary Yucci's a friend of mine.
- 28:41Speaker 1: I says, come on.
- 28:42Speaker 2: So I got right up to the combine. I said,
- 28:44Speaker 2: I can't do it. I was just humiliated. I didn't
- 28:46Speaker 2: want to go to the combine and see all my
- 28:48Speaker 2: coaching friends after just being fired. I was embarrassed. So
- 28:51Speaker 2: Mooch says, come on, let's go. So I ended up
- 28:53Speaker 2: doing it, and I guess I did pretty good. And
- 28:56Speaker 2: some guys at Monday Night Football saw me and we
- 28:58Speaker 2: had a chance to interview. But when I met Turico,
- 29:01Speaker 2: long story show short, he helped me big time. He
- 29:05Speaker 2: threw me great fruits that I could hit. He would
- 29:08Speaker 2: hit me, you know, and probe me, and he really
- 29:10Speaker 2: helped me with my preparation and my confidence. But it
- 29:13Speaker 2: was a transition. It was pretty interesting. I really enjoyed
- 29:18Speaker 2: the three man booth when we had Jaworski up there,
- 29:21Speaker 2: because we would bust each other's balls and it was
- 29:23Speaker 2: almost like three guys at a bar watching a football game.
- 29:26Speaker 2: That's what I felt like, But it was a great transition,
- 29:29Speaker 2: a lot of fun, and it allowed me to get
- 29:31Speaker 2: the tapes, keep studying. We got our quarterback camp going
- 29:35Speaker 2: in the spring, which kind of kept me going with
- 29:37Speaker 2: the draft and ultimately led to my return to the Raiders.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Unfortunately I did last long.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Yeah, to talk about how hard it was to transition,
- 29:45Speaker 3: you're talking about being embarrassed and humiliated, you are like
- 29:47Speaker 3: a you were like a super Bowl winning coach and
- 29:50Speaker 3: you were somebody who got traded.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Yeah, well that was hard too. But you know, when
- 29:55Speaker 2: you get fired, you guys know it is eventually. Even
- 29:59Speaker 2: you got cut, it's it. Maybe you decided yourself, but
- 30:02Speaker 2: maybe you saw the writing on the wall. At some
- 30:05Speaker 2: point somebody says you're fired, and it catches you. But
- 30:12Speaker 2: when I did go back, it was it was a
- 30:14Speaker 2: lot different. The world had completely changed. What's really hard
- 30:18Speaker 2: is hiring a coaching staff. When you're the head coach,
- 30:21Speaker 2: the most important thing you got to do is hire
- 30:24Speaker 2: the right coaches. I'm going to call the plays and
- 30:26Speaker 2: coach the quarterbacks. That's just how I did it. But
- 30:29Speaker 2: you better hire the right defensive staff. You know, you
- 30:31Speaker 2: better get the right personnel group around you that sees
- 30:34Speaker 2: the vision that you have for the team or vice versa.
- 30:37Speaker 2: We have to see it the same way. But that
- 30:40Speaker 2: was a big challenge is surrounding yourself with guys that
- 30:43Speaker 2: you grew up with. A lot of those guys had
- 30:45Speaker 2: their own jobs. They couldn't get out of their contracts.
- 30:48Speaker 2: It's a pain in the ass, man, getting your network
- 30:51Speaker 2: together on the same staff so you can go in
- 30:54Speaker 2: and do what you want to do.
- 30:55Speaker 1: When you are picking out those coaches, you're talking about
- 30:58Speaker 1: your buddies. How hard is it to get a phone
- 31:00Speaker 1: call from a guy that you may have known for
- 31:02Speaker 1: a long time, that you know is not the right
- 31:03Speaker 1: person for the job. What's that conversation? Long?
- 31:05Speaker 3: Man?
- 31:06Speaker 2: It is hard, you know. You got to say I'm
- 31:07Speaker 2: going in another direction and you lose some friends. It's
- 31:10Speaker 2: hard to have a lot of friends, you know. Sometimes
- 31:13Speaker 2: you gotta turn a guy down. You can't do it.
- 31:16Speaker 2: You got a job open, Hey, I need the job.
- 31:18Speaker 2: I don't have a job. I need this job, and
- 31:21Speaker 2: you got to let him down and sometimes it costs you.
- 31:24Speaker 2: But there's a lot of hard lessons and mental toughness
- 31:28Speaker 2: that you gotta understand come with being the head coach.
- 31:31Speaker 3: Yeah, when you were in media for those nine years.
- 31:33Speaker 3: Was the goal always to get back in the NFL
- 31:35Speaker 3: and be a coach.
- 31:37Speaker 2: It was initially I thought I'd be right back in
- 31:39Speaker 2: doing something right. But the more I got around Turrico
- 31:43Speaker 2: and Jaworski and the dun dun dundah. I mean, I
- 31:46Speaker 2: love that song, man, And there was a certain as
- 31:49Speaker 2: a kid growing up, I love Monday Night Football. My
- 31:52Speaker 2: mom and dad would let me stay up to watch
- 31:54Speaker 2: the highlights at halftime, Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford. I
- 31:57Speaker 2: felt honored to be on Monday Night Football, but I
- 32:01Speaker 2: ultimately knew I had to get back on the sidelines.
- 32:04Speaker 2: And I still miss it, man, I still would like
- 32:07Speaker 2: to take one more swing. But right now I'm busting
- 32:11Speaker 2: with the boys, and I'm with Barstool and I'm having fun.
- 32:14Speaker 3: Man, are you hoping to get back on the sideline?
- 32:17Speaker 2: I mean, you know fantasy. I live in fantasy world
- 32:19Speaker 2: a little bit. I'm no different than I was when
- 32:21Speaker 2: I was eighteen years old. You know, I fantasize about stuff,
- 32:25Speaker 2: and I still fantasize about getting a can of whoop
- 32:28Speaker 2: ass and going out there with a bunch of guys
- 32:30Speaker 2: and just kicking a shit out of some people. I
- 32:32Speaker 2: just liked that competitive game day feeling. I just you know,
- 32:36Speaker 2: you can't get that anywhere else.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Man, the butterflies, the juice. We were a smelling salt guy.
- 32:42Speaker 2: No, I never did that. I never had to do that.
- 32:44Speaker 1: But the smelling salts were always It just adds that
- 32:47Speaker 1: level of anxiety to a whole new fun level. Yeah,
- 32:49Speaker 1: but dude, when the Jets fired for their head coach,
- 32:52Speaker 1: I think it was was it Booger came out and
- 32:55Speaker 1: he's like, one name you need to think about right
- 32:58Speaker 1: now is John Gruden. And for the last couple of years,
- 33:00Speaker 1: your name wasn't really thrown around the whole coaching realm,
- 33:03Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, your name is now starting
- 33:05Speaker 1: to find its way back into the NFL. When you
- 33:08Speaker 1: start to hear that, are you getting phone calls about anything?
- 33:10Speaker 1: Or are you just the media is starting to talk
- 33:12Speaker 1: and you're letting them do their thing, because that's how
- 33:14Speaker 1: everything works. All it takes is one person to say
- 33:16Speaker 1: your name and then it's slowly, like a snowball, just
- 33:18Speaker 1: starts getting bigger and bigg as it rolls down a hill.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Just a few conversations you know. I think the big
- 33:23Speaker 2: thing I'm trying to do right now is coach people
- 33:26Speaker 2: that I have. The FFCA have an office, I have
- 33:30Speaker 2: my own I have my video tapes, and I'm obsessed
- 33:34Speaker 2: with it. We have a lot of coaches, a lot
- 33:36Speaker 2: of players, just different coaching staffs that have come in
- 33:39Speaker 2: and we study football, and I really am getting my
- 33:42Speaker 2: fix doing that. I really don't need this nil stuff.
- 33:46Speaker 2: I would give me a heart attack.
- 33:47Speaker 3: Would you coach college?
- 33:49Speaker 2: You know I might if it was a big program
- 33:51Speaker 2: with a lot of nil money, because I'd buy a
- 33:53Speaker 2: lot of players. Yeah, and I guarantee I could walk
- 33:56Speaker 2: across when we play Nebraska. You know what I'd do
- 33:58Speaker 2: after the game, I'd go find the two or three
- 34:01Speaker 2: guys that aren't playing a lot that I like. I'd say,
- 34:03Speaker 2: you know what, you got to get your ass out
- 34:04Speaker 2: of here, come play. I would do a good job
- 34:06Speaker 2: of that. Yeah, I can see my snaking. But now
- 34:10Speaker 2: I'm wired. I just I just am not wired like
- 34:13Speaker 2: they're doing business now in college. I can't deal with
- 34:17Speaker 2: a lot of this financial you know, paying you a
- 34:21Speaker 2: million dollars in the weak side, linebacker gets a hundred
- 34:25Speaker 2: for this guy here, This guy gets nothing. I just
- 34:27Speaker 2: have a hard time with the salary structure and the
- 34:31Speaker 2: whole overall operation. But that's just me.
- 34:34Speaker 1: When you see a guy like Bill Belichick with the
- 34:36Speaker 1: resume that he has looking at UNC, is it confirmed now?
- 34:40Speaker 1: Is he now the Tar Hills head coach?
- 34:44Speaker 3: He's willing to coach? At the time we're recording this,
- 34:47Speaker 3: the post that I saw was like the North Carolina
- 34:50Speaker 3: Tar Hills they would know their decision within twenty four hours.
- 34:53Speaker 1: With Bill Belichick coaching now in college? Like, what's your
- 34:57Speaker 1: thought process seeing that?
- 34:58Speaker 2: I'm not really shocked as many people are. I think
- 35:01Speaker 2: he's got a son who's a very good young coach.
- 35:04Speaker 2: The opportunity to maybe bring your son with you at
- 35:07Speaker 2: Chapel Hill. Chapel You guys have been.
- 35:08Speaker 3: At Chapel Hill.
- 35:09Speaker 2: There's a lot of good stuff there. Man to go
- 35:11Speaker 2: to Chapel Hill, you know, finish your coaching career with
- 35:14Speaker 2: your son, perhaps get the program back to where people say, wow,
- 35:20Speaker 2: we got to play North Carolina and maybe someday have
- 35:22Speaker 2: your son take over. Maybe that's something that's in the cards.
- 35:25Speaker 2: I don't know. But he's got a new girlfriend. I
- 35:28Speaker 2: see that all over the internet. Things don't ever stay
- 35:31Speaker 2: the same, you either get better or worse, and I
- 35:33Speaker 2: think Belichick might be looking for something a little different.
- 35:36Speaker 2: How would you like to live in New England for
- 35:37Speaker 2: fifteen years? You go to Chapel Hill, girlfriend, has some fun,
- 35:43Speaker 2: kick some ass and be with your son.
- 35:45Speaker 3: You know.
- 35:46Speaker 2: I think Belichick is capable of doing just about anything
- 35:50Speaker 2: in football. He's already done it, and good for him
- 35:53Speaker 2: if he chooses to get into the NCA. How would
- 35:55Speaker 2: you like that? Though? If you're coaching in the ACC,
- 35:58Speaker 2: you're at Wake Forest or you're at Duke, you're the
- 36:00Speaker 2: Miami Hurricanes, and you open up with Bill Belichick.
- 36:03Speaker 3: I know.
- 36:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I was impressed how well he's done in the
- 36:08Speaker 1: media this year. I did not think you heard, like
- 36:11Speaker 1: Gronkowski and Edelman and Brady kind of like chirp about
- 36:14Speaker 1: to talk about how bland he is and how he's kind.
- 36:16Speaker 3: Of got to see it for fifteen years.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Yeah, got to see it, just kind of talking to
- 36:19Speaker 1: the media. Now he comes in, he's doing Manning cast,
- 36:21Speaker 1: he's on Pat McAfee show, and he does an incredible job.
- 36:24Speaker 1: Did you expect that?
- 36:26Speaker 2: No? I really didn't. But as I said, I I
- 36:28Speaker 2: don't know Bill Belichick like a lot of guys do.
- 36:31Speaker 2: I don't hang around with the defensive guys. The offensive
- 36:33Speaker 2: guys get on this bus. The defensive guys have always
- 36:36Speaker 2: been on that bus. But I remember when I was
- 36:38Speaker 2: coaching the Raiders, I got a call from Bill and
- 36:40Speaker 2: he says, hey, I heard you like bon Jovi. My
- 36:43Speaker 2: wife loves we love bon Jovi. I go, yeah, we
- 36:46Speaker 2: really do. Like he's playing in San Jose Saturday night.
- 36:49Speaker 2: You want to meet him and get two tickets? I say, hell, yeah.
- 36:52Speaker 2: So I've always been indebted to Bill Belichick. He's a
- 36:57Speaker 2: cool guy, man. I mean, he is a really cool guy,
- 37:00Speaker 2: and I just think it's exciting at his age to
- 37:03Speaker 2: reinvent himself and come back, perhaps as a college coach
- 37:07Speaker 2: says a lot about him.
- 37:08Speaker 3: Yeah, you talk about you have this football facility in Tampa.
- 37:12Speaker 3: What does your week look like?
- 37:14Speaker 1: Like?
- 37:14Speaker 3: When do you wake up? How is your routine on
- 37:16Speaker 3: a day to day? Yeah?
- 37:17Speaker 2: I got to have a routine, you know, Monday through Sunday.
- 37:19Speaker 2: I have to have a routine. I always did as
- 37:21Speaker 2: a coach. But Monday, I really like to go in
- 37:25Speaker 2: there and look for my grinders, studying and looking at
- 37:28Speaker 2: the Sunday the games, the statistics, the playtime percentages, who
- 37:32Speaker 2: did what? My tapes really come in Tuesday morning. So Monday,
- 37:36Speaker 2: I'm kind of, you know, getting my boards ready. You know,
- 37:39Speaker 2: who really played well in third down? Who had the
- 37:41Speaker 2: best scoring game? I want to see those games. How
- 37:44Speaker 2: did Russell Wilson throw for four hundred yards? I can't
- 37:47Speaker 2: wait till the tape comes in. But I kind of
- 37:49Speaker 2: set up my Tuesday film study based on what I
- 37:52Speaker 2: see Monday, and then Tuesdays like an all day. That's
- 37:55Speaker 2: why it's crazy. I'm here flying out on Tuesday. I
- 37:58Speaker 2: couldn't get to my tapes, man. But you know, then Wednesday,
- 38:02Speaker 2: I try to work on my presentation. I believe you
- 38:05Speaker 2: got to do the preparation. You gotta study the tapes
- 38:08Speaker 2: for me to say this guy's playing good. I want
- 38:10Speaker 2: to see that he's playing good. If this guy's playing bad,
- 38:13Speaker 2: you read about it. I gotta see he's struggling, you know.
- 38:16Speaker 2: But I do the preparation. Then on Wednesday, I start
- 38:18Speaker 2: the presentation, start to send out my boards. You know
- 38:22Speaker 2: who I like, and I draw all my stuff up,
- 38:25Speaker 2: and then Thursday I get into some behind the scenes things.
- 38:28Speaker 2: I like to study. Red Zone just different short yardage things,
- 38:32Speaker 2: different running backs, just different things. But I love to
- 38:36Speaker 2: study three hard days and then I do like to
- 38:39Speaker 2: get out on Friday if I can't hit the golf ball.
- 38:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I've been waking up throughout the week.
- 38:43Speaker 2: I get up early, four thirty five o'clock, not like
- 38:45Speaker 2: I used to. But my office is right down the
- 38:48Speaker 2: street half a mile from my house.
- 38:50Speaker 1: So let me just pause you for a second. You
- 38:52Speaker 1: said four to thirty five o'clock, and now I used
- 38:54Speaker 1: to what did you used to get up?
- 38:55Speaker 2: I see up three o'clock three seventeen every day. Three
- 38:57Speaker 2: seventeen was my number?
- 38:59Speaker 3: Really? Yeah?
- 39:00Speaker 1: What time would you go to bed?
- 39:01Speaker 2: I go to bed early. I go to bed a
- 39:03Speaker 2: nine thirty ten o'clock. I try to be in bed
- 39:05Speaker 2: by ten, ten, ten o'clock.
- 39:06Speaker 3: The latest hit ten ten. That is that's wild? What
- 39:09Speaker 3: is that? What are the hours look like when you
- 39:11Speaker 3: are the head coach? Are you there till midnight and
- 39:14Speaker 3: waking up it?
- 39:14Speaker 2: No? I could never do it at night. And I
- 39:17Speaker 2: didn't want my coaches to feel like they had to
- 39:19Speaker 2: come in at three o'clock or four o'clock. I didn't
- 39:21Speaker 2: want them to feel like that at all. But I
- 39:24Speaker 2: had to get in there early. Nobody bothering you, nobody's pitching,
- 39:28Speaker 2: nobody's phone's ringing. I had to focus my concentration on
- 39:31Speaker 2: the scripts, you know, the cards you got to draw
- 39:34Speaker 2: the cards, the tip sheets for the quarterbacks. And you know,
- 39:38Speaker 2: I try to get out when the work is done.
- 39:41Speaker 2: You know, I did not want to be in there
- 39:42Speaker 2: all night. Now. When I worked for the Raiders, Al
- 39:44Speaker 2: Davis was a night guy, so I would be a
- 39:47Speaker 2: morning guy and Al would come in at seven o'clock
- 39:49Speaker 2: at night. He almost killed me that first year. Finally
- 39:52Speaker 2: I said, hey, something's got to give, man. I just can't.
- 39:55Speaker 2: I can't stay in here till midnight. But that was
- 39:57Speaker 2: a tough year. My Al broke me in.
- 39:59Speaker 3: Pretty good man, we had and I want to talk
- 40:04Speaker 3: about I want to talk about the time you recruited
- 40:08Speaker 3: me to come back to the Raiders. Yeah, if you
- 40:11Speaker 3: can remember, I'll recall it a little bit. So I
- 40:13Speaker 3: was there the last five games for Oakland. We had fun,
- 40:18Speaker 3: like we weren't having the best season, went out on
- 40:21Speaker 3: a decent note defensively, and coach Grwen brings me in
- 40:26Speaker 3: for an exit meeting. You know, not like the n
- 40:28Speaker 3: I l Ex meetings where it's like, hey, you gotta
- 40:30Speaker 3: pay me this or I'm not coming back. But he
- 40:31Speaker 3: brings me on an exit meeting. Coach's like, I need
- 40:35Speaker 3: Will Compton back, Like you're not going to be a
- 40:37Speaker 3: Hall of Famer, You're not going to be a pro bowler.
- 40:40Speaker 3: I'm sitting there in my head like, I mean, I'm
- 40:42Speaker 3: still playing, Like, yeah, I understand I can't be a
- 40:45Speaker 3: I probably won't be a pro bowler, but I can
- 40:47Speaker 3: still aspire myself a little bit.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Of juice and still could be a pro bowler. Thought
- 40:52Speaker 1: that right.
- 40:54Speaker 3: He's like, I want you around. We need more. Will
- 40:57Speaker 3: Compton's on the team, and I don't know what's going
- 40:59Speaker 3: to happen in free agents. Se YadA, YadA, YadA. Cause
- 41:01Speaker 3: I got to play and start like three games there
- 41:03Speaker 3: at the end, which I'm thinking in my head when
- 41:06Speaker 3: I went out there and I did my workout, I
- 41:07Speaker 3: was on the squad, I was in the backup, all
- 41:10Speaker 3: was special teams. I was starting in base that fucking
- 41:12Speaker 3: first week. Coach grew comes up. He's like, hey, just
- 41:15Speaker 3: don't even think out there, go out there and make
- 41:16Speaker 3: plays that fun. I love you, man, That's awesome. Who
- 41:20Speaker 3: would you play first week the Lions. Will played the
- 41:22Speaker 3: Lions the first week, and uh so I ended up
- 41:26Speaker 3: taking over the job finishing out those three games. And
- 41:29Speaker 3: so I'm thinking of my head, I thought I was
- 41:31Speaker 3: coming out there to kind of finish out my career, like,
- 41:33Speaker 3: let me go out there. I'll go out on a bang,
- 41:34Speaker 3: have some fun before the boys, bring some merchandise, promote busting,
- 41:38Speaker 3: and just have a good time because the stress is
- 41:40Speaker 3: off of like I felt like my career was kind
- 41:42Speaker 3: of done after I got injured with the Saints, and
- 41:45Speaker 3: so it's like, oh, okay, I get to go out
- 41:46Speaker 3: here and play like I'm just gonna go out fun
- 41:48Speaker 3: and play finish off playing the game that I started loving.
- 41:50Speaker 3: And so when I played those three games, I'm thinking
- 41:52Speaker 3: in my head like maybe I might get a little
- 41:54Speaker 3: maybe I might get a little something I knew. I
- 41:56Speaker 3: bought myself a year or two just because I got
- 41:57Speaker 3: to play again. I got to have some film. But
- 42:00Speaker 3: they're going to recruit me. They pay fifty million dollars
- 42:02Speaker 3: to like Littleton and Kwakowski, great linebackers, good linebackers. But
- 42:06Speaker 3: I'm thinking in my head, like, you know, I thought
- 42:09Speaker 3: I might get a little bit of I thought I
- 42:10Speaker 3: might get a little bit of coin two or three.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Yeah, guaranteed money is what he wanted.
- 42:14Speaker 1: Yeah, everyone does, every player does.
- 42:16Speaker 2: What I'm gonna interest it in, though, is I have
- 42:18Speaker 2: this philosophy. It's called RCEE. You should get a hat
- 42:22Speaker 2: and put RCEE on it. Recognition, communication, execution. I think
- 42:27Speaker 2: you got to have it. At quarterback. The guy's got
- 42:29Speaker 2: to recognize the defense and then communicate the line, call,
- 42:32Speaker 2: the audible whatever, and that's going to lead to high
- 42:35Speaker 2: levels of execution. The thing I loved about Will is
- 42:38Speaker 2: he could recognize the offense, he could recognize the situation,
- 42:42Speaker 2: and he could communicate better than most guys I've seen
- 42:44Speaker 2: at linebacker. He was a sharp guy, and that would
- 42:47Speaker 2: lead to higher levels of execution. A lot of the
- 42:50Speaker 2: yards you see are bullshit yards, bad tackling, bad defensive
- 42:55Speaker 2: entry mistakes, a lack of recognition, a lack of communication.
- 43:00Speaker 2: And if we can have that piece and a secure piece,
- 43:04Speaker 2: that's what I was really after. But you were, let's
- 43:06Speaker 2: be honest here, you could come out with that smiley
- 43:08Speaker 2: face with that microphone. You wanted guaranteed money, and I
- 43:12Speaker 2: can't blame the guys go out to California and play football,
- 43:15Speaker 2: you know Vegas.
- 43:17Speaker 3: Uh yeah, that was the first year of transferring, transitioning
- 43:19Speaker 3: to Vegas because they had offered I had a minimum
- 43:22Speaker 3: on the table with no signing bonus, which is like
- 43:24Speaker 3: the games the game. There was no market for me.
- 43:25Speaker 3: So they were in a spot to where it's like,
- 43:27Speaker 3: I mean, nothing else is out there for you. We'll
- 43:29Speaker 3: offer you this. And you know, I got PG calling me.
- 43:32Speaker 3: He's like explaining everything. He's like Coach Gruden's like, I
- 43:35Speaker 3: just want you around. I want to see you. I
- 43:37Speaker 3: want them to see you communicate all this stuff. You
- 43:39Speaker 3: don't have to practice, you don't have to do this.
- 43:41Speaker 3: And I'm thinking to myself, like I just came out
- 43:44Speaker 3: there as a minimum player and proved that I could
- 43:46Speaker 3: play like the week of the game, like I can
- 43:49Speaker 3: do the same exact thing, and I put where in
- 43:50Speaker 3: turn of my body for training camp, right, And I'm
- 43:52Speaker 3: telling this always training camp with you? It was always yeah,
- 43:56Speaker 3: it was always training camp. And PG was like, can
- 43:58Speaker 3: you call coach Gruden and telling the same stuff because
- 44:01Speaker 3: he's coming in. He's like, how are we signing Prince
- 44:03Speaker 3: of Mukamaru and Nelson Aguilar and Will won't come out
- 44:06Speaker 3: here to the Raiders. I'm like, yeah, I'll be happy
- 44:09Speaker 3: to talk to him. I call coach Coach Cruden and
- 44:11Speaker 3: I think he was just finishing a workout. It sounded
- 44:13Speaker 3: like he was sweating a little bit. He's like Will Compton,
- 44:16Speaker 3: He's like, you're harder to sign than Keyshawn Johnson. Man,
- 44:19Speaker 3: how do we get you out here to the Raiders?
- 44:21Speaker 3: And I'm thinking, yeah, I bet you over Keyshawn Johnson
- 44:23Speaker 3: more than a minimum and a Subway gift card. And
- 44:25Speaker 3: we're like bantering, laughing back and forth, and uh yeah.
- 44:29Speaker 3: I always loved that story. I couldn't wait to tell
- 44:31Speaker 3: my old man because he's always been a massive fan
- 44:33Speaker 3: of football and yourself. But that's my recruiting story with
- 44:37Speaker 3: Coach Cruden. You're harder to sign than Keyshawn Johnson man.
- 44:40Speaker 3: I'm like, well, fuck, he mean he's getting me. I'm
- 44:42Speaker 3: sure you paid him some money.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Yeah, you had some characters in that Raiders team. Was
- 44:46Speaker 1: what was your interactions like with Richie and Cognito love him,
- 44:49Speaker 1: great guy.
- 44:50Speaker 2: Incognitos out of football. He had the episode with Miami.
- 44:54Speaker 2: He's out of the league and we brought him in
- 44:56Speaker 2: for a workout and we have the cones set up.
- 44:59Speaker 2: We got Tom Cable, really good line coach, been with
- 45:02Speaker 2: Seattle a long time. And Incognito comes out and he's
- 45:05Speaker 2: listening to Tom Cable tell him what he wants him
- 45:09Speaker 2: to do. He wants him to hop basically the first
- 45:12Speaker 2: ten yards Karayoka do a couple other things just to
- 45:16Speaker 2: showcase his athleticism and his you know, his whatever. How
- 45:20Speaker 2: he can bend and twist. Incognito goes around the thing
- 45:24Speaker 2: one time half speed, and Cable goes, I've seen enough. Really,
- 45:28Speaker 2: he's a great apt Incognito is a really good at
- 45:30Speaker 2: People don't understand that he went to Nebraska. He's a
- 45:33Speaker 2: little full of shit like Compton, but you know, he
- 45:37Speaker 2: has the it factor that we needed. He had the nastiness,
- 45:41Speaker 2: he had the he has the Taylor Luwan personality. He's
- 45:45Speaker 2: very outgoing, He's not afraid to say something. He'll make
- 45:48Speaker 2: you laugh, he'll piss you off. He had everything we
- 45:50Speaker 2: needed at guard and he could pull on the power
- 45:53Speaker 2: plays and it just he has a great ability to
- 45:57Speaker 2: get out on screens. But I love being around him.
- 46:00Speaker 2: Comes to Tampa, we played golf a little bit. He
- 46:02Speaker 2: likes my wife. My wife's about this tall, and he's
- 46:06Speaker 2: been through a lot in his life, but he's he's
- 46:09Speaker 2: he's really a character. We had Vontez Perfect. We had
- 46:12Speaker 2: traded for Antonio Brown. They put us on hard knocks.
- 46:16Speaker 2: What a collection I was assembly you guys. Yes, I
- 46:20Speaker 2: was trying to bring back the old Raiders, eighty Raiders.
- 46:23Speaker 3: You did it? How was it?
- 46:24Speaker 1: What was it like having Perfect and Ab on the
- 46:27Speaker 1: same team, because obviously there's a whole thing about CTESPN
- 46:31Speaker 1: that AB's doing. And you see that hit that Perfect
- 46:34Speaker 1: put on Ab, Like, was there ever? Did you have
- 46:37Speaker 1: to make amends there?
- 46:38Speaker 2: I never got around Antonio enough. You know, Antonio showed
- 46:41Speaker 2: up on a hot air balloon. He had his feet fried,
- 46:44Speaker 2: he had cryo therapy. I never even heard of crowd therapy,
- 46:47Speaker 2: and he had an issue with his helmet. He wasn't
- 46:49Speaker 2: happy the NFL wouldn't let him wear his helmet. So
- 46:52Speaker 2: we really never got him around the guys very much.
- 46:54Speaker 2: I didn't have very much interaction with him at all. Really,
- 46:58Speaker 2: one of the most frustrating things my coaching career was
- 47:01Speaker 2: not getting him to play for us. We had a
- 47:04Speaker 2: mini camp. I tell you, we had a Mini Camp
- 47:06Speaker 2: back in Oakland. He put on a display. He took
- 47:09Speaker 2: some of our routes that we like to call Looki's
- 47:11Speaker 2: I got all these words. He made the routes look
- 47:14Speaker 2: better than anybody I've ever seen. His conditioning was sick.
- 47:18Speaker 2: If we didn't have a fence around the field, he
- 47:20Speaker 2: might have got killed by a car. Because he finishes everything.
- 47:23Speaker 2: He'll run one hundred miles an hour.
- 47:24Speaker 3: I thought.
- 47:25Speaker 2: I went home and got hammered. One night after Mini Camp,
- 47:28Speaker 2: I told my wife and said, we're going to complete
- 47:29Speaker 2: every pass. That's how good this guy looked. He was phenomenal,
- 47:33Speaker 2: and unfortunately I never got him for one freaking game.
- 47:36Speaker 1: What's the conversation with Mayok when they're like, hey, what's
- 47:39Speaker 1: the problem with ab And they're like, doesn't like his helmet? Oh,
- 47:42Speaker 1: his feet were fried from CROYFD therapy. What are those
- 47:46Speaker 1: upstairs conversations like when you're trying to deal with a
- 47:48Speaker 1: guy like that.
- 47:49Speaker 2: Well, Mike was a new GM too, so a lot
- 47:51Speaker 2: of this stuff is his first time and experience.
- 47:54Speaker 3: It was.
- 47:55Speaker 2: It was a rough deal and you're on hard knocks.
- 47:58Speaker 2: Then he got Vontez berfect. But the two of those guys,
- 48:00Speaker 2: they mixed pretty good. They kind of laughed with one another,
- 48:03Speaker 2: and Richie was kind of like the third part of
- 48:06Speaker 2: the party. Those conversations were great. Yeah, how you talk
- 48:11Speaker 2: about busting with the boys, you should see some of
- 48:13Speaker 2: the boys I bust with. But I always felt this,
- 48:16Speaker 2: if you have football character on your team, and we
- 48:20Speaker 2: felt our coaching staff. You know, we had Derek Carr,
- 48:23Speaker 2: we had some really good veteran players, good football character.
- 48:26Speaker 2: Let's bring in some characters. So we bring in Perfect.
- 48:29Speaker 2: You know, Perfect really is. He's a great guy, and
- 48:32Speaker 2: he's a smart guy. He just knocks the shit out
- 48:35Speaker 2: of you. And what's wrong with that? I mean that's
- 48:38Speaker 2: my feeling. And uh, I think if you do have
- 48:41Speaker 2: the character in place, you can bring in some characters
- 48:44Speaker 2: and have some fun. And Richie Incognito is a great guy.
- 48:47Speaker 2: Don't don't don't kid yourself on Perfect either. He's really
- 48:50Speaker 2: smart and he's really a hell of a guy. He's
- 48:52Speaker 2: misunderstood perhaps by some. And I really enjoyed Antonio Brown.
- 48:57Speaker 2: I mean, hell, he went out with my son. He
- 49:00Speaker 2: a song. They got a song out there. I'm not
- 49:02Speaker 2: even gonna tell you the name.
- 49:04Speaker 3: We gotta find that.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Sum will definitely find that thing before day's end.
- 49:09Speaker 3: And even on Incognito too, like he was he was
- 49:12Speaker 3: how old was he? He was like the oldest player
- 49:14Speaker 3: of four and he was a pro. I'm talking about
- 49:18Speaker 3: like whenever practiced any had the massage therapists. I'd be
- 49:20Speaker 3: coming in the needling. He'd beginting done like somebody who
- 49:22Speaker 3: like took care of his body around the clock and working.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Out with him in Arizona. He is a guy that
- 49:28Speaker 1: like doesn't necessarily look like an athlete, but is truly athletic.
- 49:32Speaker 1: Like he has all the pieces of an office line
- 49:34Speaker 1: you would want. He's stout too, Incognito.
- 49:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean we remember the COVID where you can't
- 49:39Speaker 2: have meetings with the players in person, so we would
- 49:41Speaker 2: have zoom meetings, so you would see all the players
- 49:44Speaker 2: on their little corner. You'd be having an offensive line
- 49:48Speaker 2: meeting and you'd see the fifteen offensive line. He'd have
- 49:50Speaker 2: a team meeting and you could see a lot of
- 49:52Speaker 2: the faces. So I remember Incognito one time I took
- 49:55Speaker 2: all his clothes off, was walking around in his garage.
- 49:58Speaker 2: You know. He he just did things that were so
- 50:01Speaker 2: off the wall, hilarious. Uh, to keep everybody laughing. God,
- 50:06Speaker 2: bless that guy.
- 50:07Speaker 3: Killer man.
- 50:08Speaker 1: Yeah, he has an aged a bit that face.
- 50:11Speaker 2: You got to see him hit a golf ball.
- 50:13Speaker 1: He can play. He's an athlete. Is he is an athlete?
- 50:15Speaker 3: Man, He's the wrong person to get on the bad
- 50:18Speaker 3: side with the football field. He was one of those
- 50:20Speaker 3: dudes that was a menace on just field. Goal was
- 50:23Speaker 3: trying to finish you on field?
- 50:24Speaker 1: Oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah, man, I wouldn't want to
- 50:27Speaker 1: wouldn't want to deal with that.
- 50:28Speaker 3: You want to get him going to hopefully draw a penalty.
- 50:31Speaker 1: I wish I was able to play with him. I
- 50:32Speaker 1: would I would have loved to play. I think that
- 50:34Speaker 1: he was with Buffalo for a minute. There was a
- 50:36Speaker 1: little bit of talk about him coming to the Titans,
- 50:38Speaker 1: and I was like, man, that'd be awesome to play
- 50:40Speaker 1: right next to him for a year.
- 50:43Speaker 2: This you you played, You played one of the toughest positions.
- 50:46Speaker 2: There are, man, who are who are some of the
- 50:48Speaker 2: guys now that play left tackle that you look at
- 50:52Speaker 2: and say, he's he's really good?
- 50:54Speaker 3: Are they? These days?
- 50:55Speaker 2: It's easy to say Trent Williams, he's not playing right.
- 50:58Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, Trent to me is I think is the
- 51:00Speaker 1: greatest of all time. I think he is from an
- 51:02Speaker 1: athletic standpoint, from a strength standpoint understanding, because with the
- 51:06Speaker 1: offensive line, like you're playing every single snap of the game,
- 51:09Speaker 1: and they say to go hard every single play. He
- 51:11Speaker 1: is a true understanding of like if you're the backside
- 51:13Speaker 1: on power and you're doing a hinge, like you have
- 51:17Speaker 1: a very easy job. You take care of the big gap,
- 51:19Speaker 1: you wing out, the end's coming down, you just block
- 51:21Speaker 1: him out real quick. So he he does a great
- 51:23Speaker 1: job of picking and chooses his times to attack in
- 51:26Speaker 1: the game. A guy that I like, I love his
- 51:27Speaker 1: feet is Lamry Tunzel. I know we talked about Houston
- 51:31Speaker 1: having some struggles, but I think his feet are maybe
- 51:35Speaker 1: the best feet of it I've ever seen. I think
- 51:36Speaker 1: Ronnie Stanley, he's got a poetic movement about him when
- 51:41Speaker 1: he's in his past set. He's very smooth and a
- 51:44Speaker 1: guy that who's who was injured and has now come
- 51:47Speaker 1: back and I played with him. Jack Conklin talk about
- 51:49Speaker 1: a guy that has zero technique, has zero fundamentals when
- 51:52Speaker 1: it comes to playing the position, but just always gets
- 51:55Speaker 1: the job done. I like those guys quite a bit.
- 51:57Speaker 2: They got a guy in Tampa I really like this
- 51:59Speaker 2: Tristan and worse.
- 52:00Speaker 1: Oh my god.
- 52:01Speaker 2: Yeah, Tristan he's a power player.
- 52:04Speaker 1: Have you seen have you seen the video and he
- 52:06Speaker 1: was coming out for the draft that he's jumping out
- 52:08Speaker 1: of the pool.
- 52:08Speaker 2: Who can do that?
- 52:09Speaker 1: That that type of power is just different. And then
- 52:11Speaker 1: we talked about him too, is Joe al I like
- 52:13Speaker 1: Joe Alt quite a bit too. Like a young guy
- 52:15Speaker 1: who's found his way on a run heavy offense that
- 52:18Speaker 1: I'm a big fan of.
- 52:20Speaker 3: And embracing the move the right tackle. Yeah, because you're
- 52:23Speaker 3: talking about that, like you know, some guys that he
- 52:24Speaker 3: was telling you at the draft he didn't want to play.
- 52:28Speaker 1: Yeah, that is that's incredible. It's wild how Iowa gets
- 52:32Speaker 1: these offensive linemen, man, I know.
- 52:34Speaker 3: And then white cornerbacks.
- 52:37Speaker 1: Yeah, the uh? And then Micah Beckton?
- 52:40Speaker 3: Was it?
- 52:40Speaker 1: Micah Beckton, That's what we were talking about.
- 52:42Speaker 2: Beckton left tackle. He's out of Louisville. He he you know,
- 52:46Speaker 2: he goes to New York and the media gets on
- 52:48Speaker 2: him and they let him go and he gets with
- 52:51Speaker 2: the right coach and reinvents him, puts him in there
- 52:53Speaker 2: right guard.
- 52:54Speaker 1: It's it's it's really important for these the position groups
- 52:57Speaker 1: at all times. I'm sure it's important for everywhere, but
- 53:00Speaker 1: for an offensive line coach, especially because you got DB's
- 53:04Speaker 1: and they're all like, they're not playing as one unit.
- 53:06Speaker 1: They all have their own jobs. So might being zoned.
- 53:08Speaker 1: So might be a man you're playing two high, one high,
- 53:11Speaker 1: and then receivers. You have all your different routes. But
- 53:13Speaker 1: with an offensive line, it's like, truly all five guys
- 53:15Speaker 1: have to be on the same page with what everybody's doing.
- 53:18Speaker 1: That's just such a different job. You need a good
- 53:20Speaker 1: offensive line coach to be successful. You gotta have it.
- 53:23Speaker 2: Oh my god, that's that's probably the most important higher. Yeah,
- 53:26Speaker 2: if you're the head coach, your defensive coordinator, and your
- 53:29Speaker 2: line coach, you know you gotta get somebody that can
- 53:32Speaker 2: be the sixth man that can play both guards and
- 53:35Speaker 2: center a swing tackle. Those are tough jobs.
- 53:37Speaker 3: Man.
- 53:38Speaker 1: What were those conversations like with the swing guys when
- 53:41Speaker 1: you're saying you have a guy like me, I was
- 53:42Speaker 1: a guy that only played left. I couldn't you put
- 53:45Speaker 1: me in a right hand stance. I'm as worth as
- 53:47Speaker 1: the football player as you'll ever see.
- 53:48Speaker 2: Well, I think the good line coach, well, you're the
- 53:50Speaker 2: left tackle. You're you're the highest paid left tack. We're
- 53:52Speaker 2: not going to talk about you for a minute. But
- 53:54Speaker 2: other guys on the practice field. Bill Callahan was my
- 53:57Speaker 2: line coach for a long time. Yeah he's with the Titans. Yeah,
- 54:01Speaker 2: Son's the head coach. But he would go out on
- 54:03Speaker 2: the practice field and we'd have Lewan playing right guard.
- 54:07Speaker 2: I'm like, Bill, what the hell are you doing? You know,
- 54:10Speaker 2: and then we got Luwan's playing right tackle two days later.
- 54:12Speaker 2: But my point is he would create your versatility. He
- 54:16Speaker 2: would force you to get in a right handed stance,
- 54:19Speaker 2: a left handed stance, a two point stance, a four
- 54:21Speaker 2: point stance. And I think you have to have a
- 54:24Speaker 2: line coach and a backup line coach who studies a
- 54:27Speaker 2: play side the backside. It's always on your ass every
- 54:30Speaker 2: second of the day. Those are what the great ones do,
- 54:34Speaker 2: you know? And I think, as you said, that's a
- 54:36Speaker 2: key part of being a great lineman as who's coaching
- 54:39Speaker 2: you With Rabel.
- 54:40Speaker 1: Rabel was always a guy that would just find his
- 54:43Speaker 1: way into the offensive line room and he would just
- 54:45Speaker 1: tell us how to block. I having no idea how
- 54:47Speaker 1: to block offensive line. He just like just getting away.
- 54:49Speaker 1: All you have to do. You don't just position block
- 54:51Speaker 1: this guy. Were you ever a guy that would just
- 54:52Speaker 1: wander into position groups and just hang out for a
- 54:54Speaker 1: little bit.
- 54:55Speaker 2: Not really. I was pretty much always on the offensive side,
- 54:58Speaker 2: you know, but I would try to reach out to
- 55:00Speaker 2: the defensive guys later in the week. I always had
- 55:03Speaker 2: a lot of respect for our past rushers. You know,
- 55:06Speaker 2: we have to have a fourth quarter pass rush or
- 55:08Speaker 2: we got no chance. That's why I can't wait to
- 55:10Speaker 2: see these playoffs Warren sapp, Simme and Rice. You have
- 55:14Speaker 2: to have guys that can close you out. And that's
- 55:17Speaker 2: why I love the forty nine ers if Bosa plays.
- 55:20Speaker 2: But now without Bosa, without Armstead, they don't have that
- 55:23Speaker 2: fourth quarter pass rush. That's why the Chiefs can win
- 55:25Speaker 2: the Super Bowl every year because they do have a
- 55:27Speaker 2: great coach and a great quarterback. But they got a
- 55:30Speaker 2: fourth quarter pass rush, man, And if you have those three,
- 55:33Speaker 2: you have to have those three elements I think to
- 55:34Speaker 2: win it. But I was always interested in the game
- 55:37Speaker 2: plan of our past rushers. What are you gonna do
- 55:40Speaker 2: to Luan? You know, what are you gonna do to Luan?
- 55:42Speaker 2: But as you know, you don't want to be in
- 55:44Speaker 2: third and seven You don't want to have a lot
- 55:46Speaker 2: of third days, you know, and when you do get
- 55:49Speaker 2: the third and seven, you gotta be careful as a
- 55:50Speaker 2: play caller to make sure we have a chip over there.
- 55:53Speaker 2: We got somebody nudging the guy quick game screens. You
- 55:57Speaker 2: got to do some things to help these guys because
- 55:59Speaker 2: in a noise against some of these guys, it's a bit.
- 56:03Speaker 2: It's a hard job you got.
- 56:04Speaker 1: You've either got to chip these guys, slide to the
- 56:06Speaker 1: most dangerousass rusher, or have a quarterback that can facilitate
- 56:09Speaker 1: and get the ball out quickly.
- 56:10Speaker 3: That was one thing.
- 56:11Speaker 1: We had Ken wizzen Hunt for twenty fourteen and fifteen,
- 56:14Speaker 1: and Ken was like, this is my offense, but he's
- 56:15Speaker 1: been dealing with Philip Rivers for the last ten years.
- 56:18Speaker 1: So we have Jake Locker and Zach Mettenberger. Eventually, after
- 56:21Speaker 1: Jake hurts his thumb and it's all key right and
- 56:24Speaker 1: key left, we're doing six man's protections. We're not doing
- 56:26Speaker 1: chips ever, and we don't have the quarterback that understands
- 56:29Speaker 1: the offense well enough to know where his hots are,
- 56:30Speaker 1: where to get the ball out, or where the man
- 56:33Speaker 1: side protection is. With von Miller, on that side, So
- 56:36Speaker 1: it was tough slend for a couple of years. You
- 56:39Speaker 1: need those chips, you got to have them. One play
- 56:43Speaker 1: that you're obsessed with Spider two, Why banana? What's the obsession?
- 56:48Speaker 1: It's a man, It's a max protection type of situation,
- 56:51Speaker 1: a low red type of situation. Why do you love
- 56:53Speaker 1: it so much?
- 56:54Speaker 2: Andrew Luck? We had Andrew Luck on our show, Gruden's
- 56:57Speaker 2: QB Camp, and David Shaw, the head coach of Stanford,
- 57:01Speaker 2: was on my staff in Philly and in Oakland. Well,
- 57:04Speaker 2: Stanford runs a lot of Spider two white banana. And
- 57:07Speaker 2: I have never met a quarterback coming out of college
- 57:10Speaker 2: like Andrew Luck. I mean he had everything six four
- 57:12Speaker 2: two forty, he could run and probably the smartest guy
- 57:16Speaker 2: I've ever met play the position. So they're running Spider
- 57:19Speaker 2: two white Banana at Stanford unlike I've ever seen. And
- 57:22Speaker 2: I'm just studying getting ready for Andrew Luck, and I'm
- 57:25Speaker 2: seeing Spider two Wive and ass, Spider three Wive and
- 57:27Speaker 2: Ass fight. The guy's putting on a clinic, throwing, throwing,
- 57:30Speaker 2: but Spider two white banana. They must have thrown fifteen touchdowns.
- 57:33Speaker 2: I'm not shitting yet. So they're playing USC. Stanford is
- 57:37Speaker 2: playing USC. Big game college football game day, is there?
- 57:41Speaker 2: Spider two? Why Banana is very simple. You hit the
- 57:44Speaker 2: full back in the flat or at the tight end. Pops,
- 57:46Speaker 2: you might hit the tight end of the corner. You
- 57:49Speaker 2: never throw the ball backside on Spider two? Why Banana? Well,
- 57:53Speaker 2: Andrew luck on Spider two, Why Banana against USC throws
- 57:56Speaker 2: a pick six throwing to the backside. He called it
- 57:59Speaker 2: a light being route or something. So as soon as
- 58:02Speaker 2: I got to that play, his face got red as
- 58:05Speaker 2: a sheet and we busted his balls on that. Yeah,
- 58:08Speaker 2: and it just kind of went viral whatever the word
- 58:10Speaker 2: is you guys, use you know when something hits with fans.
- 58:14Speaker 1: But it was.
- 58:14Speaker 2: It was a cool moment and ever since the Spider
- 58:17Speaker 2: or two, whye Banana?
- 58:19Speaker 1: But it is a hell of a play.
- 58:20Speaker 2: If you're running power, if you're running a rock, if
- 58:22Speaker 2: you're running Mike alstot a ninety six power and your
- 58:25Speaker 2: linebackers are worried about tackling that big sum bitch, watch out.
- 58:28Speaker 2: We'll slip it full back into the flat.
- 58:30Speaker 3: Spider two or two. Who are some of the teams
- 58:33Speaker 3: right now that are kind of in the middle of
- 58:35Speaker 3: the pack, that you could see winning the whole thing.
- 58:39Speaker 2: I think Pittsburgh and Baltimore, I think someone's gonna come
- 58:42Speaker 2: out of the North, you know. I I still think
- 58:46Speaker 2: I still think Pittsburgh's dangerous. I mean, they're leading their division,
- 58:50Speaker 2: but when you look at their schedule, them in Baltimore,
- 58:53Speaker 2: I kind of consider them as the middle of the
- 58:55Speaker 2: pack in the AFC. That's a that's a tough question
- 58:59Speaker 2: for me. I I really think there's five or six
- 59:01Speaker 2: teams that have a chance to win it. I think
- 59:03Speaker 2: there's about twenty teams that are getting ready for next year.
- 59:07Speaker 3: Yeah, what is your view of the landscape of football
- 59:11Speaker 3: right now? The quality of the product.
- 59:13Speaker 2: I just think continuity is a big part of winning.
- 59:16Speaker 2: When you look at Andy Reid, He's been there, he's
- 59:18Speaker 2: done that. He's been in Kansas City, Mike Tomlin and Pittsburgh,
- 59:23Speaker 2: John Harbaugh and Baltimore. Dan Campbell's been in Detroit, Shanahan.
- 59:27Speaker 2: You know. I like the teams that are in the
- 59:29Speaker 2: money every year. It just seems to me, like have
- 59:32Speaker 2: been together the Philadelphia Eagles, Syrian he's been there now
- 59:35Speaker 2: a few years. I just think there's a lot of
- 59:38Speaker 2: change over now. Teams change coaches, not just head coaches,
- 59:42Speaker 2: offensive coordinators, defensive coordinators, And I think it's a problem
- 59:46Speaker 2: with the development of players. You guys can speak on
- 59:49Speaker 2: this when you're a first year player, when you're a rookie,
- 59:52Speaker 2: it's an eye opening deal. Man, I don't care what round.
- 59:55Speaker 2: But when you came back as your second year in
- 59:58Speaker 2: the same system, that's when you probably showed your most improvement.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: But when you keep pulling a rug out of you
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: players and here's a new snap count, here's a new system,
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: it's a it's a hard deal to get better, don't
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: you think?
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, you're on that like level one learning curve
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: in that first year, and then again when you go
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: into years two, year three, you're looking at them details.
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: You're thinking outside the box. You're trying to think more
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: like a coordinator than just your own position. You're thinking
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: about everywhere, everybody else around you have everything moves around you.
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: But yeah, when it's a new system, it's like you
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: just want to understand what your job is.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: You understand, right, you understand the bigger picture going into
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: year two as opposed to just you your assignment for
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: your play calling. Was it always the same? Did you
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: always keep the same numbers, you say ninety six power
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: Spider two wiping in it. Do you always have the
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: same terminology and phrases going from year to year? Did
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: you ever try to switch it.
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: Up a little bit?
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: I took a lot of pride in the verbiage I
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: learned under Bill Walsh with the forty nine ers, Mike Colmgrin.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: We had a lot of words and we became very worthy.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: But when I was out of football and I came back,
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: we realized that a lot of these players, you know,
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: we got we got to tighten up our communication so
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: we can pick up a player off the waiver wire,
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: make a trade whatever, and bring you in and fast
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: track you. You don't have time to learn all these crazy
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: words and what they mean. So we did streamline it
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: a little bit, but we still had a lot to
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: say because we had a lot of formations. We had
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: a lot of motions, a lot of personnel groupings. And
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: if you want to have a big airport you want
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: to take flights everywhere, you got to make sure you're
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: organized you have the ability to do that. I'm just
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: I never like these teams that line up in trips
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: right and clap their hands and put the ball in play.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: You know, I like multiple looks. If the defense hasn't
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: seen it, they can't prepare for it. It's an illusion
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: of sophistication, but we're just simple and basic plays that
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: start off looking the same, that are different. You know,
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: there's some common threads in philosophy. I think that you
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: got to have if you're going to be any good
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: at it.
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: How much football do you feel like you forgot when
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: you were in media for nine years? Terminologies your playbook.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: I probably didn't much, just because I have my own
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: computer at home, and when I watch the first play
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: of the game, I type in the formation. A lot
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: of times. I even type in the front. So now
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: you save your work and I can come back and
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: be my own quality control guy. It's a sick, obsessed
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: world of football I live in, and that's why it's
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: kind of cool to get out of it. And it's
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: almost like I'm out of prison or something.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: Man.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: I mean, I'm playing golf with these guys and there's
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: a drone flying around me and Trent you're playing. We're
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: playing golf. Frankie's on the other team. We're talking to
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: having a good time. I'm like, is this John Gruden.
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: You know, shouldn't I be in a fucking laboratory study
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: in a red zone offense or something. And now I'm
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: on the bus with you guys. It's really you know,
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: wish I'd have done this ten years ago. It's a
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: lot more fun.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: Man. What can people expect with you at barstool? It
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: seems like you bring back the Gruden football camp.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: We're going to try to bring back Gruden's QB camp
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: and it won't be the same. It'll be it'll have
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: a little different spice to it. But this Dave Portnoy guy,
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: he's else. And this big Cat guy. I really like
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: this big Cat.
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: I'm just getting to know them. And I got hired
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: really week eight of the season. So it's hard to
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: just create a show and come on, I mean, you're
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: gonna have to put a little time on task and
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: meet with some people. And you know, I'd like to
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: do something with you, man, like to do something with
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: you guys. I don't know, but I have a creative
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: mind myself and just starting to scratch the surface a
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: little bit. I've got some people out there that send
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: me nasty texts and messages, you know, help me get better,
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: and I encourage that. You know, I need to help
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: from people. But I I really am excited about what
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: could happen because I know the potential is.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: Yeah, the top of a rocket ship like barstool has
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: a way of making you more known than ever.
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: Yeah, how'd those conversations go? They've just hit you up like, Hey,
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: I'm gonna.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: I got I got a message on one of those
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Uh you know, I don't know Twitter, tiktoks or whatever. Yeah,
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: my son might who wrote the song Nicy, he's my
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: music man. He says, hey, Dad, they've portanally reached out
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: to you. So, to make a long story short, my
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: wife was in a ballroom dancing contest in Orlando and
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: Dave flew in to see me and we just had
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: dinner together and talked a little bit. Next thing I know, man,
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: we're I was in Chicago filming something up there, and
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: you know, you walk in you don't realize what's going on.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: I mean, hell, I'm just a coach. I walk in
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: there and they're filming stuff. Hey what about John Daily?
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: Did you go golf with John Daly? You start talking
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: about it. Next thing you know, it's out there. Everybody
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: knows about the whole day, you know, but it's really
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: fascinating how it works. Yeah, you know, and the ability
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: that they have to reach so many people on so
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: many different platforms instantly, and they take a lot of
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: pride in it. You know, they want to be really good,
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: which is what I.
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: Like, right your Gruden Love's Football content. I mean since
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: day one, I like, I consume it. It's like, all right,
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: I'm trying to hope you you dropped stuff before we
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: do the locker room to hear everything you're breaking down.
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: Because I remember, I'm like, I'm not thinking it's probably
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: his son running the profile, but he's got the Gruden
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: Loves Football Twitter profile and I just DM and I'm like,
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: I need Gruden On busting with and I've already messaged
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: with them, but I'm just having fun with the profile,
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: like I need Gruden On busting with the boys like
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: I need air. And he responds to me like it's
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: him running the whole Twitter account. He's like, oh, you're
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: a Gruden grinder. Of course I'll come on and I'm thinking, oh, okay,
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: I'm just messing with coach Gruden again.
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: Yeah, but you know, when you break a game down,
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: what I wanted to do with that is try to
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: take fans into a little bit of the reality of
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: what we go through one hundred percent. Fit's the Chargers
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: in the Bucks. Let's start with top of line things
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: you might want to know. I'm here's the injury list right,
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: Here's where they rank statistically, Here's how they play on
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: the road. I mean, there's a lot of things that
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: you got to get your mind straight on before you
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: even get in to the Chargers offense. Let's talk nothing
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: but about Chargers offense. And I wanted the fans and
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: know who the offensive linemen were, who the receivers were,
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: who the running backs were, who the plate caller was.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: Spent twenty minutes on a Chargers offense. Here's a couple
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: of schemes they like to run. This is the Chargers offense,
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: but they're going up against Tampa's defense. And then you
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: spend twenty minutes on Todd Bowles calls the plays. You know,
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: they got Winfield's hurt, they got Jamal Deane's hurt, and
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: you go into all the matchups and some of the
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: blitzes that Todd Bowles runs. Then you got to do
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: the Chargers defense against the bucks offense. Next thing, you know,
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: it's an hour and fifteen minutes on one game, and
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: people are like, man, fans aren't gonna want to watch
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: all that, but the hardcore fans, oh, bro nutty people
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: like me like it. Then at the end of the game,
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: they say, at the end of the presentation, they say, well,
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: we got to make a prediction. Who's gonna win. I said,
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: I don't know who's gonna win.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: I say, I don't.
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: Care who wins. Yeah, you know. But then I start
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: picking scores and some of my picks I'm like, you, guys,
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: I root for a team a little bit. I kind
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: of want this, so I kind of picked them to
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: win and it's not some of the gambling people. They
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: get pissed at. You screwed me, man, you gave me
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: all this information you pick.
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: I remember coming to Taylor, I'm like, hey, have you
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: seen this gruenless football show? He runs it like he's
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: low key, like running a team meeting at the top
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: of a week.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: It's incredible the breakdown of everything. Have you noticed how
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: easy it is to overthink things because it's like, you
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: can break down all the film you want, but they'll
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: be like, all right, who's gonna win. You're like, well,
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: this team and they're like, well, know their defense is
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: this and that? Have you have you ran into that
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: where it's like you get into a point of overthinking
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: it a little bit.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: You can, you can easily overthink it. And I tell
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: you there are some games. Now I'm not a big
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: gambling guy. I'll be honest with you, there are some
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: games I've learned to stay away from. Got no idea
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: what's going to happen in this game? And there are
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: certain games. As I told you guys earlier, I'm going
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: in on this game.
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: Yeah, you know.
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: And I don't pick the spreads. I would never pick
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: the spreads. And I know you don't make as much
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: money when you pick the money line they call it,
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: but you pick a team to win. I'm pretty good
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: at picking winners. And I don't get involved in a spread.
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: And then my son says, we don't get anybody if
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: you pick the money line. Well, if you pick two
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: money lines.
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: You know you got a little parley.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: Anyways, I'm I'm learning and I'm loving it. And this
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: is really cool, this operation. I would not have expected
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: anything less from you two guys and I tell you,
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: I don't know where you guys are going with the future.
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: There's a lot of rumors about where you two guys
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: are heading.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: Hopefully, yeah, hopefully nice chatter.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: It is very nice.
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: I got a couple of fun questions be for you
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: written up by our boys Sherman the back.

- 1:09:46Speaker 3: Let's say you're running a fantasy football league, but the
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: teams are made up of only coaches. Which coach are
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: you drafting first?
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: First overall pick?
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: I take Andy Reid? Is Andy Reid. He can call
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: the plays and he can coach the quarterback.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: Man.
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: That's a good pick. Yes, everybody's gonna fault you there.
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: If you could only watch one NFL game on repeat
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: for the rest of your life, which game are you
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: one NFL game?
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: It would be the millennium game Raiders versus Chiefs. The
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: calendar just kicked over to two thousand. I was in
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: my second year coaching the Raiders. I was going to
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: get fired. We were seven and eight. We're playing at
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: the Chiefs. All the Chiefs need to do is win
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: this game, beat the Raiders, who they beaten one hundred
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: times in a row, and they win the division, get
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: a home playoff game. We're down seventeen zip after about
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: six minutes, and this place is rocking. Man, my boy
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: rich Gannon got pissed off and shredded him. We beat
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: him thirty eight thirty five in overtime. Check that game out.
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: Raiders at the Chiefs, two thousand.
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: Last game of the year. Hey he knew off the
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: top too.
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: We busted him, good man. I was dancing on the field.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: Probably saved my job that day too.
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: Guy's gotta be a great feeling and go home, crack
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: up in a nice drink.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: What's your favorite memory on the grid iron? Just get one.
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: Twenty nineteen playoffs AFC Divisional Round against the Baltimore Ravens.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: They were the one seed. We had to win five
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: of six just to make it into the playoffs. We
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: play against the New England Patriots and the Dynasty for
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: Tom Brady was his last game as a Patriot, and
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: we go in against the Ravens. It was Lamar Jackson's
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: first MVP in Baltimore. The Bank was as loud of
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: a stadium as I've ever heard of my entire life,
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: and we owned them, like I that is my favorite
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: game from a blocking standpoint ever. They had eight guys
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: in the box when ran Wanda, which is a open
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: side outside zone, and we blocked him and Derek ran
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: it for like forty yards. It just felt like everything
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: we did it was we were gonna get at least
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: four yards. It was awesome. We had a turnover. We
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: had a turnover in that game. I think Darree Casey
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: got a strip stripsack fumble that was picked up by
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: Harold Landry. That player on like the forty six yard
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: line going in and we call Lucy x pile on
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: y x pile on post and it's Kalif Raymond. He's
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: like four or five yards past the dB and we
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: score a touch on the next play and it's just
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: like that cool, We're gonna beat the no.
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: That's the thanks see That's the one thing I've learned
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: about being in social media is I like to discover,
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: like great plays. I like to go back and show
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: you some of the memories of other players. I have
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: tape in my office of Lawrence Taylor. I got Eric
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: Dickerson ronning with that high form. But you can't show
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: you can't really show the video. You don't have rights
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: to the video to use all the time you see.
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: So you gotta, you know, you gotta creatively find ways
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: to make your point. But I would love to see
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: that game.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: It's awesome.
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: There's yeah.
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: I can go on all day by that game. That
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: game was awesome. The blocking was incredible. We had five
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: guys doing everything right every single play. It was unbelievable.
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: It's hard to think about mine. I feel like it's
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: more you just get pissed that you lost, like when
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: we lost the Green Bay in the walladcard round when
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: we ended up winning the division. Probably the most fun
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: game and most fun memories when we clinched the division
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: at Philly right around Christmas, went out there. That was
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: the dad game, my only career sack on Sam Bradford.
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: But we beat their ass and we came back and
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: just the city. The town was packed in Ashbourne, Virginia,
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: like you were just going one two miles an hour
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: driving out of the facility because fans were so excited.
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: It was such a moment that you know, that was
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: like do you like that year Kirk Cousins kind of
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: making his run. We're kind of a bad football team,
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: and we'd win one, lose one, try to stream a
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: couple together, and we ended up winning the division that year.
- 1:13:38Speaker 3: In the NFC least they called it, but I would
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: say that game is probably the most memorable fun game
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: as far as moments go. Probably when I got I
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: got to start against the New Orleans Saints we played
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: the week before at New England. We got our ass kicked,
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: but I made a few good plays. I think I
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: had like eight tackles and they made the switch to
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: make me the mike, the mic backer, and I remember
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: kerk Olividadi. He pulled me right into the office before
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: we went into the defensive room to have a defensive
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: meeting to start breaking down the Saints. He pulled me
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: in and he whispered, you got the keys, make me
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: right and just dap me up. And I'm like, oh shit,
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: we're rolling like I'm active, Like I get to play now,
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: and so we end up beating the Saints' ass bro
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: and the paper, one of the papers is next week
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: was like, you know, RWA Redskins with attitude, and you know,
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: I was spotlighted in it. Had a really good game.
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: And that's probably the most memorable moment was when I
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: got to ultimately like take over the job in Washington,
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: because you know, you just you bust your ass to
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: getting all the situations that you're in. The year before that,
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: there was like, you know, that's when I got to
- 1:14:40Speaker 3: play against you guys the Delainey game and I had
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: a little run there because somebody had gotten hurt to
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: where I accumulated some tackles. But then you just start
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: to get noticed. The next year, it's like, hey, are
- 1:14:50Speaker 3: you gonna take this guy's job? You have a couple injuries,
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: you don't get the opportunity to take it. Then in
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: the middle of the year as it unfold, similar to
- 1:14:56Speaker 3: the Oakland year, where you just ended up getting an
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: opportunity and you just don't look back, like those are
- 1:15:00Speaker 3: those are more of like my memorable times in the NFL.
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: What was the least favorite game ever.
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: Question the tuck rule was bad.
- 1:15:11Speaker 3: Oh, I don't know. I forgot that. I forgot the yeah,
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: because he did walk through, you know, take it at
- 1:15:20Speaker 3: his facility and he goes in the bathroom on the
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: shitter and he's got the photo sitting up and it's
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: the tuck rule photo.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: You know, we played the AFC Championship game when I
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: was coaching the Raiders against Baltimore, and I don't know
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: if you remember, but Sarah Gousa killed our quarterback. We
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: don't get a personal file, we don't get anything. It
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: really pissed me off in that game too. But the
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: tuck rule, you know, instant replay is designed to only
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: overturn a play that's completely what obvious right to lose
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: a game like that. Think of Steve Wiznowski, He's nine
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: Pro Bowls, William Thomas, Eric Allen, these are great NFL players.
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: That's the last game they ever played. You know, we
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: got we got a chance to go to the Super Bowl.
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: That's what kind of team we had. And I can
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: see Belichick taking his headset off, their whole stab. Brady's
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: walking off the field. You can interview any of them.
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: They knew that game was over. Yeah, and the only
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: thing wrong with the tuck rule is they spelled it wrong.
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: It's really not a t it's another consonant it's supposed
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: to be.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: That's what.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: They don't even have the rule anymore. Yeah, that's how
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: bad it is.
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: God, the biggest rival coach out there, We're just like,
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: I want to get his ass. Whether you guys went
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: back and forth to or had to be Andy.
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: You know, had to be Andy Reid, you know, because
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: we were on the same staff. We're on Mike Holmgran's
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: staff in Green Bay. You guys love this. So Andy
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: played for Mike Holmgren at BYU, so he's kind of
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: the teacher's pet, you know.
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't.
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: I love.
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: So.
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: We had this big board, me and Mary Ucci and
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: Andy Reid were young coaches at the time, and we
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: would put the plays on the board with the formations
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: and these are the plays that we think should be
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: in the game, and Homegrown would be doing his thing.
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: He'd come in, he'd sit there and look at the
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: board and in a different color would be a new play.
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: And Homegrown was always he was always like, whose play
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: is that, Andy goes, that's my play. That's sixty nine
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: handoff solid. You get on a board and draw it.
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: Mike would put it in and Andy would like look
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: at me and moods like, I'm smarter than you. Get Yeah,
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: So Andy would get a play in the game plan.
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: It would be called and he gains six yards through
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: a gain eight yards and Andy walk around the office
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: all week.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: I guess, bitch.
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: So now we're not playing good. We just signed Reggie
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: White in free agency, we got we got Brett Fahr
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: playing again, we got Sterling Sharp, we got a hell
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: of the team, and we're not playing good. We're like
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: two and three and people are starting to get on
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: Holmegren's ass.
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: A little bit.
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: What's wrong with you guys? So we go into the room.
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: There's all the plays and there's this play called Fox
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: three full back slide fifty eight. All go z search
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: Homegrin's like, what are those plays? I go, those are
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: my two plays? And I had to cut up and
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: I well, you don't like our place? Is that what
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: your problem is?
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: You don't want to run?
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: He was on my asye like yelling at me, my fuck.
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: So we go play the Bears on Halloween night. You
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: can go back and watch his game. It's pouring down rain,
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: the worst night in the history of football. Third and two,
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: early in the game, home Green calls red left, fake
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: fox three, naked right, full back slide. I swear to God,
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: Brett Farv kept it, runs it in longest touchdown run
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: of his career, thirty six yards on Monday night football.
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: I'm on the sidelines. I'm not saying anything, but I'm like, God, damn,
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: that's my play.
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: So listen, late l.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: This is late in the game. We just need a
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: first down of games over and it's like third and fourteen.
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: And I had seen Dan Marino run an all go
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: with the little search route. The guy acted like he
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: was running a scene, but he would throw his shoulders
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: down and uncover. And I put that play in and
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: Sterling Sharp ran it better than Mark Clayton, and Mark
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: duper Ever ran it far off through it like a
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: twenty three yard game to icy game. That's my plate too.
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: So we get on the plane and back. Then they
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: give you a little bag with two beers in it.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: And Holmer is sitting in the front with Ron Wolf
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: the GM and I'm in the back. I'll never forget this.
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: I got my beer and I'm drinking it. I'm thinking, God,
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: damn well, that was the greatest day of my life.
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: Holger turns around. He goes, Hey, Gruber calls me, Gruber, Hey, Gruber,
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: come down here. I walk down and think I sit
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: next to him. He goes, game ball, Hell of a job.
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: I turn around. I walk back to my seat. I
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: see Andy Reid, and I go I love competing with
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: Ady Read. And then when we competed against each other
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: and he was in Philly, I was in Oakland or
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: Kansas City. I mean, I just used to love seeing them.
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: And I love you. Ye, Christmas said God, bless you.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: Man.
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: If I can ever do anything, if I ever come
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: back and coach, you'll be my left tackle.
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: Let's fucking go.
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: You have a bad You're not getting a guaranteed contract,
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: you're getting a ship. You're it, You're getting a minimum
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: salary benefit. And no one said it, but you coach
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: for you. I gotta have a left tackle.
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: I love it. Before before you go, I do want
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: to play a game of crystal ball with you. Okay,
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: Of all the coaching positions that might be open this year,
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: it might be the Dallas Cowboys. We know the Jets.
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: We know the Bears. Where do you think you would
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: fit in best?
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: Oh? I have no idea that puts me on the spot.
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right, that's a tough one. Well cut it.
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: Guess what cut Hey appreciate you coming on. Man.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: I do think the Bears with that young quarterback is interesting.
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: You know. I like their defense too. Man, have you
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: seen him play? I got some guys on it.
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: And TJ.
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: Edwards. I mean, he's a hell of a player. They
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: got some linebackers that can run. When they lost Jakwan Brisker,
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: they lost a key member of that secondary, but they
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: got corners. They do have some pass rushers. They got
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: some receivers. Man, Yeah, they got a quarterback. I like
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: this kid. Man Y Minnesota might look out on Monday
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: night these guys. This quarterback is interesting, man, I love it.
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: It's got me feeling nicy.
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: You were down a point two seconds left. It's fourth
- 1:21:12Speaker 3: and twenty from the thirty five yard line. But your
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: kicker broke his foot. What's the play call?
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: Shit?
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: Thanks a lot. I'll go tandem right seventy six rebound pass.
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: I'll throw a hail Mary up there. I'll isolate my
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: best receiver. If they play one on one over there,
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: I'll throw it to him. If not, I'll take I'll
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: pop it up into the end zone touchdown.
- 1:21:35Speaker 3: Love it because you ever see.
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: Guys throw hail mary's in the ball lands off the
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: field of play. I want to make this point before
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: I leave. Have you ever seen this shit where the
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: I'm talking to hail Mary? Okay, and the ball lands
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: off of the field of play? Have you ever seen that? Yes,
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: you asked, yes, Why do you think that is?
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: They're scared?
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: Why do you think it is? It's a QB rating man,
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: They don't want to throw interceptions.
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: Oh, you think it's an ego thing.
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: I know it is. It has to be. These are
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: the greatest passers in the world. You mean to tell
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: me on a hail Mary, you can't put the ball
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: on the field to play. Seriously, you can throw the
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: ball in that tight window that big, You can sizzle
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: it in there off platform into a window that big,
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: But on the last play of the game, you can't
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: keep the ball on the playing field. Let me tell you.
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: When you see that, you know you're dealing with somebody
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: that's interested in his QB rating. I'll keep an eye
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: on that.
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: I will, I will what last saying.
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: I'll tell you I learned this from Reggie White. Do
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: you know tackles for loss and sack is a big
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: way these guys get paid, right, Yeah, So back in
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: the day, Reggie White told me this a long time ago.
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: They're playing for the Philadelphia Eagles and the quarterback takes
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: a knee. Reggie White, Clyde Simmons. He told me those
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: guys would go flying in there to touch the quarterback
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: to get credit for a TfL. And now that rule,
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: I guess has changed too. But I'm interested in You know,
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: two seconds left in the half, you're in a prevent
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: defense and somebody runs a draw play for sixteen yards.
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: You know those That's why statistics you gotta be really
