Latest / OneLegUpAlex Media / ONELEGUPALEX Reax With Lou Terminello on Igor Shesterkin and Passing of Mike Ditka 10-10-26
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:05Speaker 2: All right, well, it's Terminal's take on One Link Up
- 0:09Speaker 2: Alex Media. I have not been able to do my debrief.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Maybe I'll do that in a separate episode. But Lou,
- 0:15Speaker 2: right now I'm wearing the Bears because of Mike Ditka
- 0:18Speaker 2: and my dad's love of the Bears. So my heart's
- 0:21Speaker 2: in Chicago. My mentality's in Chicago. But all of a sudden,
- 0:26Speaker 2: here in New York, Knicks win a championship. only to
- 0:30Speaker 2: have Aaron Judge out most of the year, Jackson Dart
- 0:35Speaker 2: out for the season, and now add Igor Shostakhin. The
- 0:40Speaker 2: sports gods are funny. They give it and they take
- 0:43Speaker 2: it away, it seems like.
- 0:45Speaker 1: It's really true, Alex, and thanks for having me as always.
- 0:50Speaker 1: The news that just broke the last 20 minutes or
- 0:53Speaker 1: so about Igor Shostakhin is devastating. He's irreplaceable. There's no
- 1:00Speaker 1: way the Rangers can make up for his loss. He
- 1:02Speaker 1: covers up any mistakes they make in front of him.
- 1:06Speaker 1: He's at the top of his game. He's in the
- 1:08Speaker 1: prime of his career. In a league where goaltending is
- 1:14Speaker 1: such a premium now, backup goaltending, starting goaltending, what are
- 1:20Speaker 1: the Rangers.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Going to do?
- 1:21Speaker 1: Jonas Corpozalo is going to be out for another month,
- 1:24Speaker 1: who was going to be the backup to Sturgeon. They're
- 1:27Speaker 1: really lucky that Dylan Garland didn't get claimed during waivers.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I don't know what they would have done. Spencer Martin's
- 1:35Speaker 1: injured down in Hartford. Yes, there's a goaltender out there,
- 1:39Speaker 1: but the Rangers can't get him because of cap problems.
- 1:44Speaker 1: I mean, I know they made some changes to the
- 1:48Speaker 1: long-term IR system. which Chesterkin obviously falls under since he's
- 1:53Speaker 1: out for the rest of the year, but obviously a
- 1:56Speaker 1: three-time Vezina Trophy winner and former MVP Hart Trophy winner
- 2:00Speaker 1: and gold medal hero Connor Hellebuck is out there. He
- 2:04Speaker 1: has three years left on his deal. The Rangers can't
- 2:06Speaker 1: fit him into the cap. I don't know if there's
- 2:10Speaker 1: some manipulating they can do, but then you can't carry
- 2:14Speaker 1: Hawk and eventually say next year Chesterkin. So... I don't
- 2:20Speaker 1: know what the Rangers are going to do. They'll probably trade.
- 2:24Speaker 2: From what you saw, does it look bad, like career-ending type,
- 2:30Speaker 2: or what?
- 2:33Speaker 1: Well, I was watching it live, and it was strange
- 2:38Speaker 1: because at first, it looked like he might have been
- 2:41Speaker 1: pushed into the net, but he kind of fell trying
- 2:44Speaker 1: to make the save, and his leg just... directly went
- 2:50Speaker 1: into the, uh, uh, the goalpost to his right. And
- 2:54Speaker 1: you knew right away, Alex, that he was, that he
- 2:57Speaker 1: was badly injured. And, uh, uh, he was down for
- 3:00Speaker 1: a while. He was pounding his fist on the ice.
- 3:03Speaker 1: They need, he had trouble getting even down the runway
- 3:06Speaker 1: when they finally got onto the bench. Uh, so you
- 3:08Speaker 1: knew it was going to be a long-term injury. You
- 3:10Speaker 1: didn't know if it was season ending at that time,
- 3:13Speaker 1: but it looked bad. And, uh, You know, I got
- 3:17Speaker 1: to give the Rangers credit. They continued to play hard
- 3:19Speaker 1: last night. It was a two-to-one game until an empty
- 3:23Speaker 1: net goal by Tom Wilson was a second ago. So
- 3:27Speaker 1: the Rangers didn't get down in the dumps. But this
- 3:31Speaker 1: isn't it. He's irreplaceable. There's nothing else you can say.
- 3:34Speaker 1: He's irreplaceable.
- 3:35Speaker 2: I do think this wearing terror has been going on
- 3:43Speaker 2: for years because... As you say, he's not only irreplaceable,
- 3:46Speaker 2: but they rely on him. How many goals did they
- 3:48Speaker 2: score that he had to, like, keep them in every
- 3:51Speaker 2: game it felt like for all these years? It hasn't
- 3:54Speaker 2: been easy for him.
- 3:56Speaker 1: No, absolutely. There's no doubt about it. And, you know,
- 4:00Speaker 1: he's right up there, you know, with Hellebuck, with Sorokin,
- 4:04Speaker 1: you know, with, you know, all those great goalies. And
- 4:11Speaker 1: it's with Vasilevsky, you know. it's a devastating loss.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Well, and of course, uh, down in Florida, he didn't
- 4:19Speaker 2: have a good year last year, but his, their goalie too.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I mean, it just, yeah.
- 4:23Speaker 1: And Nebraska is now in Toronto and we'll see how
- 4:25Speaker 1: he does there.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Um, I don't, it feels like an echelon in his
- 4:33Speaker 2: own right. You know, like, I don't know, just there's,
- 4:35Speaker 2: there's something about him that separates him from all of them.
- 4:37Speaker 2: So there'll be devastating, but, but, there's still, what, 80-something games,
- 4:44Speaker 2: 79 games to play. I mean, they've got to find
- 4:47Speaker 2: a way to get through this.
- 4:48Speaker 1: As Bill Parcells, we bring it up a lot of times,
- 4:51Speaker 1: when Tessa Verde got hurt on opening day in 99
- 4:54Speaker 1: in that jet opener against the Patriots, they're not going
- 4:58Speaker 1: to change the schedule for you. Nobody's going to feel
- 5:01Speaker 1: sorry for you. And unfortunately, that's a fact of life.
- 5:06Speaker 1: But it's a devastating injury, Alex. I mean, there's no
- 5:09Speaker 1: other way to say it.
- 5:11Speaker 2: It is. Garland is okay. I know he gave up
- 5:14Speaker 2: a couple goals, but look, that's a tough situation to
- 5:17Speaker 2: try and keep. I think it was a 1-1 tie
- 5:19Speaker 2: or 1-0 lead at the time for the Rangers when
- 5:22Speaker 2: this happened.
- 5:24Speaker 1: When he got injured, Garland came in and he did
- 5:30Speaker 1: a good job. He did. He did a good job because.
- 5:35Speaker 2: That was a tough situation. 2-1, but the empty net
- 5:39Speaker 2: made it 3-1. To hold the caps to two goals
- 5:41Speaker 2: is still a pretty big feat, you know.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Absolutely, yeah. So we'll see what happens, you know, what
- 5:48Speaker 1: they do.
- 5:50Speaker 2: And I was so excited because I'm like, well, they're
- 5:52Speaker 2: off to a three, you know, a three and one
- 5:54Speaker 2: star for a win. And then this happened. So, you know,
- 5:57Speaker 2: it's just.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Well, sports is unforgiving. You never know when something good
- 6:04Speaker 1: is going to happen, when something bad is going to happen.
- 6:07Speaker 2: And you know New York was immediately switching gears from, okay, well, actually,
- 6:12Speaker 2: they're switching gears more to the Knicks than the Rangers,
- 6:15Speaker 2: to be honest with you. Because, okay, Yanks are out. Well,
- 6:17Speaker 2: at least Knicks started now 10 days from now. But look,
- 6:20Speaker 2: the Rangers showed, they still show promise. I know Igor
- 6:24Speaker 2: is out for the season, which is horrible. But I
- 6:26Speaker 2: can't be down on this team entirely yet. They have
- 6:29Speaker 2: a good core. And my friend Lindsey says someone's got
- 6:32Speaker 2: to step up. Look, Adam Fox is now in the
- 6:35Speaker 2: middle of the seven-year or eight-year deal he signed. He's
- 6:39Speaker 2: got to be the big guy now to really own
- 6:41Speaker 2: up to that contract he signed.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Well, you know I've been down on Adam Fox over
- 6:47Speaker 1: the last couple of years. But so far in the
- 6:49Speaker 1: first five, it's only five games, he's played very well
- 6:52Speaker 1: so far this year. So... Yeah, I mean, and Mike
- 6:57Speaker 1: Sullivan's a good coach. And Mike Sullivan's gone through injuries
- 6:59Speaker 1: where he's lost Sidney Crosby for three months. He's lost Malkin.
- 7:04Speaker 1: He's lost guys like that. So he'll know how to
- 7:08Speaker 1: navigate the team through this injury period.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Absolutely. And, you know, you think about it also, JT Miller.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I think he's the best guy to have as captain
- 7:20Speaker 2: right now for all this. So we'll have to see.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Yeah, no, we'll see. Like I said, he's not the
- 7:27Speaker 1: first guy to get hurt. We just hate to see it. Absolutely.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Because, you know, last year was a down year for
- 7:36Speaker 2: the Rangers, and everybody was just so frustrated. This year
- 7:40Speaker 2: they actually have a team around, Igor, so maybe this
- 7:42Speaker 2: was the time he was going to be able to
- 7:45Speaker 2: do something, get them farther. So, you know, it's devastating.
- 7:50Speaker 1: You don't know. I think it means too much.
- 7:53Speaker 2: And I want to switch. I want to go to
- 7:55Speaker 2: the giants because they're going to have another game without
- 7:57Speaker 2: Jackson dark tomorrow against the commanders. Oh, look, they're three
- 8:02Speaker 2: in one. The fact they've held on even without dart.
- 8:06Speaker 2: I know they're different sports, but it gives me some
- 8:08Speaker 2: kind of hope. The range is going to hold on
- 8:10Speaker 2: without Igor. Maybe I'm wrong in that, but you never know.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Absolutely. You're a hundred percent correct. Absolutely.
- 8:19Speaker 2: So yeah, we've seen it. Yeah, we have seen it. Uh,
- 8:23Speaker 2: So tomorrow the Giants play against the Commanders. I'd love
- 8:28Speaker 2: to see the offense get going a little bit, but hey,
- 8:30Speaker 2: if the defense can keep going, the Giants could maintain
- 8:34Speaker 2: first place. What's up with the Cowboys, though, Louie? I mean,
- 8:38Speaker 2: they look like they're in a free fall.
- 8:41Speaker 1: The Cowboys right now are in a free fall. You're right.
- 8:45Speaker 1: It looks like they're on their way to their second
- 8:47Speaker 1: straight losing season. I know it's two and three, but
- 8:50Speaker 1: that loss on Thursday night, was pathetic, unacceptable against an
- 8:58Speaker 1: undrafted rookie quarterback. By the way, that undrafted rookie quarterback
- 9:04Speaker 1: became the first quarterback who was drafted or signed at
- 9:10Speaker 1: the end of the draft to win a game this year.
- 9:13Speaker 1: And Jalen Daniels played very well. But for the Dallas
- 9:17Speaker 1: Cowboys to be run on for 244 yards and to
- 9:19Speaker 1: have Tampa controlled the clock for almost 40 minutes. Shows
- 9:27Speaker 1: you how inept the Dallas defense is. They have some
- 9:34Speaker 1: nice names on the front line. Kenny Clark, Quinnen Williams.
- 9:41Speaker 1: But they were run on, man. They were run on.
- 9:44Speaker 1: They were run on up the middle, around end. You
- 9:49Speaker 1: can pass against them. Alex, I think me and you
- 9:53Speaker 1: With all limited mobility, can get open against the Cowboys.
- 9:57Speaker 2: These losses are exposing them, right? So the Giants lost
- 10:00Speaker 2: I feel like they kind of let the Giants' scataboo
- 10:03Speaker 2: run around them a little bit.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Oh, my God. The Giants were dominant that night.
- 10:08Speaker 2: And then the ineptness in Rio, to let the Ravens
- 10:12Speaker 2: have a chance to get a field goal to win it,
- 10:14Speaker 2: I mean, come on.
- 10:14Speaker 1: It's on coaching. And coaching makes such a big difference
- 10:18Speaker 1: in the NFL. Look, let's look at the Giants. The
- 10:25Speaker 1: last two games they won. Again, against Tennessee, they didn't
- 10:30Speaker 1: score a touchdown. They still won the game. Tennessee had
- 10:33Speaker 1: a great chance to win the game at the end.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Last week, first and goal at the four. I have
- 10:42Speaker 1: no idea why 23 seconds ago in one timeout left,
- 10:46Speaker 1: the Arizona Cardinals didn't have love in the game. I
- 10:49Speaker 1: thought they would run it once. And if they had
- 10:54Speaker 1: to use a timeout there, they would have. But they
- 10:56Speaker 1: threw four passes and the fourth pass was the last play. Again,
- 10:59Speaker 1: that was returned for a touchdown by Banks. But this
- 11:03Speaker 1: is where coaching makes a difference. Not so much in
- 11:08Speaker 1: the X's and O's at that point. But on the sidelines,
- 11:12Speaker 1: we're going to win this game. You have that. Let's
- 11:15Speaker 1: face it. If Dable was there, they probably would have
- 11:18Speaker 1: lost one of those last two games because you would have, oh,
- 11:22Speaker 1: my God. we're going to lose again, the same thing's
- 11:25Speaker 1: going to happen. I don't believe, and I'm not on
- 11:28Speaker 1: the sidelines, I don't believe that Harbaugh probably had the confidence,
- 11:34Speaker 1: we're going to stop him, we're going to win this game.
- 11:36Speaker 1: And that's one of the aspects where coaching makes a difference.
- 11:40Speaker 1: I really do believe that. Of course, the X's and
- 11:42Speaker 1: O's are the key, but he also purveys confidence. Hey,
- 11:46Speaker 1: we're going to win this game. And they did, and
- 11:49Speaker 1: I think we have a great chance to win tomorrow.
- 11:51Speaker 1: And Alex, I think... they have a great chance to
- 11:54Speaker 1: win a division. I really do. Their schedule is workable.
- 12:00Speaker 1: They don't go to any gauntlet where they're playing teams
- 12:04Speaker 1: that are much better than them. They've only played one
- 12:07Speaker 1: team that's much better than them so far, and that
- 12:09Speaker 1: was the Rams.
- 12:10Speaker 2: And you can look at the personnel, right? So Banks
- 12:15Speaker 2: has been on this team for a while. He struggled
- 12:17Speaker 2: a bit last year. Get the right coach in there. He's...
- 12:21Speaker 2: They're managing the personnel better, it seems like, than the
- 12:24Speaker 2: last few years.
- 12:25Speaker 1: You told me that Deontay Banks, after all his issues,
- 12:30Speaker 1: whiffing on tackles, not wanting contact, would still be on
- 12:36Speaker 1: the New York Giants. And being at the end of
- 12:39Speaker 1: the game, like he was last week, I would say
- 12:44Speaker 1: no way. But he is. And it looks like he's
- 12:47Speaker 1: going to be a productive player for them. you got
- 12:52Speaker 1: to credit to the giant coaching staff. You got to
- 12:55Speaker 1: coach these players up. And that's, that's, there's so many injuries.
- 13:01Speaker 1: The talent level changes from week to week. Coaching makes
- 13:05Speaker 1: a difference. Like I said to you last week, Alex,
- 13:07Speaker 1: coaching staff is part of the roster.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Well, look, and they just honored the 86 team last
- 13:14Speaker 2: year and it's last week. And it seems like ourselves coaching.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Well, I guess it was 91.
- 13:20Speaker 2: They have more of the, because Sims went down and
- 13:24Speaker 2: Hustler had to come in then. But even 86, I'm
- 13:27Speaker 2: sure there were some challenges he had to navigate to
- 13:29Speaker 2: get to the Super Bowl.
- 13:31Speaker 1: The 86 team, in my estimation, since I've been watching
- 13:35Speaker 1: Giants football for the last 60-ish years, the 86 team
- 13:42Speaker 1: was the best team in Giants history. In my estimation.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Now, we know you're Jets. Were you Giants at some
- 13:48Speaker 2: point at all or not really? Never, ever.
- 13:51Speaker 1: I was never a Giant. I've been running, Alex, I've
- 13:55Speaker 1: been running for the Jets since I was 11 years old,
- 13:57Speaker 1: the year before they drafted Joe Namath, their first year
- 14:01Speaker 1: in Chase Stadium.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Well, I guess it's a perfect segue because they did
- 14:06Speaker 2: lose to the Bears last week. And now this week,
- 14:09Speaker 2: the Bears lose an icon, Mike Dicka, This is why
- 14:14Speaker 2: I bring you on, because you have all the memories
- 14:15Speaker 2: of this guy playing and coaching. What do you remember
- 14:18Speaker 2: most about Mike Ditka?
- 14:20Speaker 1: Well, Mike Ditka, when I first started watching the NFL,
- 14:26Speaker 1: was the best tight end in the league. A year
- 14:30Speaker 1: or two later, John Mackey for the Baltimore Colts, who
- 14:33Speaker 1: played college ball at Syracuse, came in. Ditka revolutionized the
- 14:39Speaker 1: tight end position. Alex, before Ditka came in as a
- 14:42Speaker 1: rookie in 1961, and he was drafted a number five
- 14:46Speaker 1: overall in the first round, and he was a multi-sports singer.
- 14:54Speaker 1: They threw to the tight end maybe 15 times a year,
- 14:57Speaker 1: 20 times a year. But in his first year, he
- 15:00Speaker 1: caught passes for over 1,000 yards. No tight end had
- 15:04Speaker 1: ever come close to that. He won rookie of the
- 15:06Speaker 1: year in 1961. I remember a game in 63, and
- 15:10Speaker 1: they won the NFL championship in 63. That's when you just...
- 15:15Speaker 1: You just played one, you know, you just had the
- 15:17Speaker 1: one game, you won the division before Super Bowl, before playoffs.
- 15:21Speaker 1: There was a game in Pittsburgh where this, and Alex,
- 15:24Speaker 1: the NFL is totally different than it is today. The Steelers,
- 15:27Speaker 1: they were playing the Steelers who were having one of
- 15:29Speaker 1: their rare good years. People think the Steelers have been
- 15:32Speaker 1: good for, you know, 100 years. No, the Steelers have
- 15:34Speaker 1: only been good since 1972. Before that, they were terrible.
- 15:39Speaker 1: You know, they really, they were terrible. But the Steelers
- 15:43Speaker 1: that year finished, I think, 7-4-3. Three ties. But there
- 15:47Speaker 1: was this game in Pittsburgh late in the season. Green
- 15:50Speaker 1: Bay was right behind the Bears. And the Steelers were
- 15:54Speaker 1: winning 17-14. And Billy Wade, the quarterback for the Bears,
- 15:58Speaker 1: and I remember this, threw a pass to Ditka. Ditka
- 16:02Speaker 1: ran up, broke about six or seven tackles. I don't think,
- 16:06Speaker 1: to set them up for a game-tying field goal He
- 16:09Speaker 1: was a great blocker. Obviously, so he played for a
- 16:15Speaker 1: championship team in 63. He played for a Super Bowl
- 16:18Speaker 1: champion in 72, catching a pass in the 24-3 win
- 16:22Speaker 1: for Dallas against Miami. He got a touchdown pass. So
- 16:30Speaker 1: he played on a pre-Super Bowl championship team. He was
- 16:36Speaker 1: an assistant coach for a championship team. He also was
- 16:40Speaker 1: the head coach for the very famous 1985 Chicago Bears,
- 16:44Speaker 1: probably one of the 10 greatest one-year teams in NFL
- 16:48Speaker 1: history with as good a defense as you can have. Then,
- 16:53Speaker 1: of course, we know he became a pipe, a pop
- 16:56Speaker 1: culture icon.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Yeah, Louie. I got to ask you this, though.
- 17:00Speaker 1: You know, I want you to watch him play.
- 17:02Speaker 2: You watch him play, and then he turns to coaching.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Did you think he had that fire as a coach
- 17:07Speaker 2: or did it increase when he became a coach?
- 17:11Speaker 1: I think basically that play I told you in Pittsburgh
- 17:17Speaker 1: when he was running over about six or eight guys,
- 17:19Speaker 1: I think that fire translated to when he was on
- 17:23Speaker 1: the sidelines. And even though some of the players behind
- 17:30Speaker 1: their back might have cursed him out, if you talk
- 17:34Speaker 1: to any of the players personally, in recent years even
- 17:37Speaker 1: when he was still alive they were saying Ditka made
- 17:39Speaker 1: us what we were and he was you know he
- 17:44Speaker 1: was one of those icons that made the NFL what
- 17:47Speaker 1: it is today the greatest league in American sport.
- 17:52Speaker 2: You think that's going to continue to be I mean
- 17:54Speaker 2: obviously the NFL is just different now I don't know
- 17:56Speaker 2: they seem to be not they're still great great sport
- 18:02Speaker 2: but they're watering it down a little bit no.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Well, I really think the injury factor, Alex, has played
- 18:10Speaker 1: a major factor in how the game has changed. I
- 18:14Speaker 1: cannot believe how many guys are hurt. And we've only
- 18:16Speaker 1: played four weeks. I mean, tomorrow the Eagles are going
- 18:20Speaker 1: to be down nine, ten starters. They're playing Jacksonville in London.
- 18:25Speaker 1: The Eagles are eight-point underdog tomorrow in London.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:30Speaker 1: So things change so quickly. But real quick on the Eagles.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Sirianni in fourth quarter decisions. Caused the Eagles injuries or not.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Caused the Eagles that game last week. I think the
- 18:44Speaker 1: NFC East is wide open. And anybody has a chance
- 18:48Speaker 1: to win it.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Well, and you know.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Now, we were talking about. Right.
- 18:54Speaker 2: One more thing on the Bears. I hope Ben Johnson
- 18:56Speaker 2: rocks the sweater. I mean, he's got to do that
- 18:59Speaker 2: in honor of Mike Ditka, right?
- 19:01Speaker 1: He started his press conference by honoring Ditka in his
- 19:04Speaker 1: remarks yesterday. So he might do that. I don't know.
- 19:09Speaker 1: I could tell you one thing. I don't like to
- 19:12Speaker 1: label him great after a year and four games. But
- 19:18Speaker 1: Coach Johnson... is on his way to having that label
- 19:23Speaker 1: as a great coach. He's not there yet because everybody,
- 19:27Speaker 1: we all in sports, always jerk reaction, start giving somebody
- 19:32Speaker 1: the label way before they deserve to receive that level.
- 19:36Speaker 1: But I'll tell you one thing, Alex, he is one
- 19:38Speaker 1: hell of a coach. And I mean, it doesn't matter
- 19:41Speaker 1: if Case Keenum's the quarterback, if Caleb Williams is the quarterback,
- 19:45Speaker 1: if Badgen's the quarterback, he's got a great, he's a
- 19:48Speaker 1: great offensive mind. And Alex, if you don't have an
- 19:52Speaker 1: offensive coach as your head coach nowadays, you're missing the boat.
- 19:57Speaker 1: And we'll just go, we'll just, go across the locker
- 20:01Speaker 1: room at MetLife Stadium to the Jets. They were pathetic
- 20:04Speaker 1: last week. That was embarrassing after three weeks of positive results,
- 20:12Speaker 1: even though they lost a couple of games. Alex, they
- 20:15Speaker 1: had the ball for 45 seconds in the fourth quarter.
- 20:18Speaker 1: How is that possible? They had 32 plays. The Bears
- 20:22Speaker 1: had 34 first downs.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Well, Lulee got their first interception in forever, so that's
- 20:33Speaker 2: a win, right?
- 20:35Speaker 1: Interception? They had four interceptions this week. Three of them
- 20:40Speaker 1: called back by penalty. The only thing that flattered the
- 20:45Speaker 1: Jets last week, Alex, was the fact that the score
- 20:48Speaker 1: was only 23-12. It was more like 55-7. And it was.
- 20:54Speaker 1: It was more like 55-7.
- 20:55Speaker 2: And that's without Caleb. That's the crazy part, right? I mean,
- 20:58Speaker 2: that's with Badgeant and Keenum. He actually was rotating these
- 21:01Speaker 2: guys mid-game.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I don't know if, of course, you want your best
- 21:07Speaker 1: player in there. But I think Johnson is so good
- 21:10Speaker 1: an offensive coach.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Jesus.
- 21:14Speaker 1: It doesn't really matter. Look what they did to the
- 21:16Speaker 1: Eagles last Monday night. They kicked their butt. They kicked
- 21:19Speaker 1: the Jets' butt. The Jets were embarrassing on Sunday. And
- 21:23Speaker 1: I think that, you know, Aaron Glenn is the head coach,
- 21:26Speaker 1: and now this year he's the defensive coordinator. Well, he's
- 21:29Speaker 1: doing a terrible job as head coach, and he's doing
- 21:31Speaker 1: a terrible job as coordinator. I'm telling you, Alex, I
- 21:35Speaker 1: cannot believe that he can... Give his job. This... disaster
- 21:43Speaker 1: of a season without getting fired. I really don't. He
- 21:46Speaker 1: might get fired mid-season. And you know what the Dallas
- 21:50Speaker 1: Cowboys did on Thursday night? They probably saved Todd Bowles'
- 21:54Speaker 1: job for a couple of weeks.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 21:57Speaker 1: All right.
- 21:59Speaker 2: I want to get to a team that's... I can't
- 22:02Speaker 2: believe I'm saying this because I didn't think they would be, what,
- 22:05Speaker 2: three wins in? And Tom Munkin, talking about an offensive
- 22:09Speaker 2: guy who was supposed to be Here are the Giants,
- 22:12Speaker 2: takes the Browns job, has a three, has them up
- 22:15Speaker 2: in the division of the AFC North. They should beat
- 22:19Speaker 2: the Jets tomorrow.
- 22:22Speaker 1: You know, tomorrow's an interesting game, obviously. They know that
- 22:27Speaker 1: they have a winnable game tomorrow on the road. Munkin's
- 22:31Speaker 1: done a great job. And Alex, Deshaun Watson, here's a
- 22:35Speaker 1: guy who, my God, didn't play for two years, had
- 22:39Speaker 1: all kinds of problems, and he's done a nice job.
- 22:46Speaker 1: I mean, Ed Munkin is a tough guy. You don't
- 22:50Speaker 1: mess around with him. And he actually interviewed for the
- 22:52Speaker 1: Jets head coaching job in 2019 when they gave it
- 22:56Speaker 1: to the incompetent Adam Gaze. Just think, Alex. Just think.
- 23:01Speaker 1: The last three Jets coaches, Adam Gaze, Robert Sala, Aaron Glenn.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Can't make this up. And don't blame Woody, because for
- 23:12Speaker 1: Adam Gaze, Woody was in England. He wasn't here.
- 23:16Speaker 2: That's true. And with Aaron Glenn, you know, he was
- 23:19Speaker 2: part of Jets lore as a great cornerback and all that.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Absolutely. But you got to separate his playing excellence from
- 23:28Speaker 1: his coaching incompetency.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Well, I'll tell you, speaking of Aaron Glenn, I'm thinking
- 23:33Speaker 2: about the Lions. And I've always thought Dan Campbell was
- 23:38Speaker 2: not the same when all of his guys literally left
- 23:39Speaker 2: the coaching staff to go head coach somewhere. But he's
- 23:43Speaker 2: holding on. I mean, this team could do something this year.
- 23:46Speaker 2: I see the Bears are playing on Thanksgiving against Detroit,
- 23:49Speaker 2: so maybe I'll fly out there. We'll have to see
- 23:51Speaker 2: about that. I've never been to a Thanksgiving game in Detroit.
- 23:54Speaker 2: I don't know about you.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I've never been to a Thanksgiving game in Detroit.
- 23:58Speaker 2: I was here when the Jets had them against Cincinnati
- 24:01Speaker 2: in 2010. I was there for that one. That was
- 24:03Speaker 2: very cool.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Detroit's offense is Super Bowl level. Their defense is Toilet
- 24:13Speaker 1: Bowl level. I mean, their defense is terrible. And, I mean,
- 24:20Speaker 1: Carolina had no problem scoring at will on Sunday night.
- 24:24Speaker 2: That's true.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Their offense is outstanding.
- 24:28Speaker 2: And Campbell's always a risky guy, you know, so I
- 24:31Speaker 2: think that risk helps him. You mentioned Salah real fast,
- 24:35Speaker 2: and that was the other coaching difference we saw. I mean,
- 24:38Speaker 2: he went for that field goal in the pouring rain.
- 24:41Speaker 2: That cost him the game right there, I think.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Yeah, that was definitely a contributing factor in the Titan-Giant
- 24:47Speaker 1: game in that pouring rain when it was 6-0 and
- 24:50Speaker 1: he decided to kick a 59-yard field goal attempt in
- 24:53Speaker 1: that pouring rain. That was just a bad decision.
- 24:55Speaker 2: All right, let's stay in Chicago because that series, we'll
- 25:00Speaker 2: get to the Yankees in a second, but to keep
- 25:02Speaker 2: it current, the Guardians-White Sox turns out to be a
- 25:05Speaker 2: very interesting series. I think the White Sox could be
- 25:09Speaker 2: in trouble. I mean, they just lost two at home.
- 25:12Speaker 2: They should lose tonight, right? What are you thinking?
- 25:17Speaker 1: Anything can happen in one game. If you are going
- 25:21Speaker 1: to force me to pick one, and I really don't
- 25:23Speaker 1: want to, yes, the Guardians probably have the edge. I mean,
- 25:28Speaker 1: Williams is pitching. I know he pitched the other night,
- 25:29Speaker 1: a couple of innings. But again, Alex, these guys go
- 25:32Speaker 1: two innings now. It's not like the old days. It's
- 25:35Speaker 1: not like John Smoltz against Jack Morris in Game 7
- 25:38Speaker 1: back in 1991. Yeah. But I think the White Sox
- 25:44Speaker 1: have a chance to win. One of the things, you know,
- 25:46Speaker 1: the White Sox can hit, but they also are a
- 25:50Speaker 1: big swing and miss team. I mean, in the two
- 25:52Speaker 1: home games, they struck out 31 times in the two
- 25:54Speaker 1: home games. I thought they would win one of the
- 25:58Speaker 1: two home games and wrap up the series. But, you know,
- 26:03Speaker 1: either one of them is going to be a huge
- 26:07Speaker 1: underdog to the Tampa Bay Rays, who have proven themselves
- 26:11Speaker 1: from day one. They are clearly the best team in
- 26:13Speaker 1: a watered-down American League in 2026. They really are.
- 26:17Speaker 2: I think we should go back to the World Series
- 26:20Speaker 2: when all is said and done.
- 26:24Speaker 1: And I think they can win against any of the
- 26:26Speaker 1: National League winners. I think they're that good.
- 26:30Speaker 2: It's the 2020 rematch, and I'm saving the Yanks for
- 26:33Speaker 2: the last part of this conversation. I've got to dive
- 26:35Speaker 2: into it. The NLCS is what we thought it would be. Brewers, Dodgers,
- 26:41Speaker 2: that's the matchup everybody was waiting for. Mizoroski versus Los Angeles.
- 26:47Speaker 2: The Dodgers, I think they still have an edge going
- 26:51Speaker 2: into this because of the Dodgers. I mean, the Brewers
- 26:54Speaker 2: had to become a little bit of an underdog, no?
- 26:55Speaker 1: For the second straight year, Milwaukee has home field advantage
- 27:00Speaker 1: in the championship series. Last year, they got swept. I think, Alex,
- 27:05Speaker 1: game one, again, is so important for Milwaukee, not so
- 27:09Speaker 1: much for the Dodgers. Because if the Dodgers win, whether
- 27:13Speaker 1: they pound them or win in a methodical 4-2 type game,
- 27:19Speaker 1: I think it gets into Milwaukee's head. So I think
- 27:23Speaker 1: tomorrow night is really critical for the Brewers. That's just
- 27:28Speaker 1: my opinion. But the Dodgers aren't the same Dodgers, but
- 27:31Speaker 1: you still can't beat them. They're nicked up. They're banged up.
- 27:37Speaker 1: The production's not as good as it was last year,
- 27:39Speaker 1: but they're still the Dodgers.
- 27:42Speaker 2: And we'll see. Are they on TBS or Fox? I
- 27:44Speaker 2: don't even know which one it is.
- 27:47Speaker 1: The NL is on Fox. Tomorrow night's on Fox News.
- 27:52Speaker 1: the original and during the week FS1. And I think
- 27:55Speaker 1: next weekend, either FS1 or Fox and the AL, which
- 27:59Speaker 1: starts Monday night is on, is on TBS.
- 28:04Speaker 2: By the way, Brian Anderson is doing an incredible job
- 28:06Speaker 2: at TBS. I always love listening to him call a game.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Like he's just got something.
- 28:09Speaker 1: I'm not the biggest Brian Anderson fan, but it's funny
- 28:12Speaker 1: you say that. Cause I was watching, I was watching
- 28:15Speaker 1: the games obviously. And he was, he had an excellent series,
- 28:19Speaker 1: you know, and yeah, he was excellent. He was, Outstanding
- 28:22Speaker 1: draw by Brian Anderson.
- 28:24Speaker 2: And Ron Darling, of course, in Cleveland series. All right.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Let's get to the debrief because the Yanks, again, out
- 28:33Speaker 2: of its 17th season. And my first big critique for
- 28:37Speaker 2: the Yankees is where was Anthony Volpe for games one
- 28:43Speaker 2: and two? You opt for jazz. And I get maybe
- 28:46Speaker 2: analytics said so. But Volpe was having a better year
- 28:50Speaker 2: coming into that after his call up back to the
- 28:52Speaker 2: major comfort level at second base. I mean, not running
- 28:57Speaker 2: with Volpe until game three was a vital mistake. I think.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Well, uh, as I've said, I don't know the criticism
- 29:10Speaker 1: on Volpe being so strong the last two years. Uh,
- 29:17Speaker 1: I get the first time they started him lefty-righty and
- 29:22Speaker 1: didn't start him. But I agree. He should have probably
- 29:31Speaker 1: played more. And, you know, again, he was three for
- 29:35Speaker 1: seven against Tampa. He's got that. edge to him. And
- 29:41Speaker 1: the Yankees don't have edge, Alex. I mean, that's one thing.
- 29:44Speaker 1: They don't have the killer instinct. And that includes Judge
- 29:48Speaker 1: when he's playing. And, you know, missing 96 games again
- 29:54Speaker 1: this year. And let's just talk about Judge for a second.
- 29:56Speaker 1: Then we'll talk about some of the other guys. Yeah,
- 30:00Speaker 1: he's a Hall of Famer. But Alex, if Tani didn't
- 30:03Speaker 1: switch leagues, he would only have one MVP, not three.
- 30:07Speaker 1: You know, he won the last two years when Tani
- 30:12Speaker 1: went to the Dodgers. Does Aaron Judge have that I'll
- 30:16Speaker 1: cut your heart killer instinct? Like a LeBron James, a
- 30:20Speaker 1: Jason Kidd, who I saw first up every night. Those
- 30:25Speaker 1: got a Jordan. They will cut a Kobe. They'll cut
- 30:29Speaker 1: your heart out to win.
- 30:31Speaker 2: Even Jeter had that.
- 30:31Speaker 1: I'm not sure. Yes, absolutely. You got that right. Jeter
- 30:37Speaker 1: had that. And I don't know. This team has holes, Alex.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Who's going to be their first baseman next year? Are
- 30:49Speaker 1: they going to make Ben Rice their permanent first baseman?
- 30:52Speaker 1: Or is he still going to be DH and first base?
- 30:56Speaker 1: I know he's caught in the past. You can't even
- 30:58Speaker 1: talk about that because you don't want catching to take
- 31:02Speaker 1: wear and tear off of his great offensive ability.
- 31:04Speaker 2: I think you give Luis Garcia Jr. a fuller year
- 31:07Speaker 2: and see what happens with him at first.
- 31:09Speaker 1: That's probably going to be. That's what's probably going to happen.
- 31:12Speaker 1: At second base, is it going to be Volpe or
- 31:14Speaker 1: is it going to be somebody else? It's not going
- 31:17Speaker 1: to be Jazz Chisholm. On that shortstop, are we 100%
- 31:21Speaker 1: sure that they didn't rush Lombard? Did Lombard need a
- 31:25Speaker 1: little more time down?
- 31:26Speaker 2: Yeah, but he actually had an okay postseason. He hit okay,
- 31:29Speaker 2: I thought.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Okay, I agree. These are question marks. Ryan McMahon.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Spencer Jones, where does he end up?
- 31:39Speaker 1: Did they rush him up? A lot of swing and
- 31:44Speaker 1: miss with Spencer Jones. Trent Grisham, he ain't coming back.
- 31:50Speaker 1: He's gone. So they need a center fielder. And we
- 31:53Speaker 1: know Bellinger can play center field in a pinch. But,
- 31:57Speaker 1: you know, at this stage, he's lost a little range.
- 32:00Speaker 1: And he's a terrific left fielder. So they'll keep him
- 32:04Speaker 1: in left. Yeah, so there's a lot of Yankee questions.
- 32:07Speaker 1: The one question the Yankees don't have, which a lot
- 32:10Speaker 1: of other teams have, and the Yankees don't have this,
- 32:13Speaker 1: they have the best pitching staff in baseball. And that's
- 32:15Speaker 1: not going to change next year unless guys get hurt.
- 32:19Speaker 2: I think Cole's going to be better and sharper in 27.
- 32:22Speaker 2: I think he'll be fully recovered. Rodon probably the same
- 32:28Speaker 2: because he also had been beat up. But Slitler was great.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Oh, my God, yeah.
- 32:36Speaker 2: He was unbelievable again this year, even though he was
- 32:38Speaker 2: injured a little bit. You've got a solid core. It's
- 32:41Speaker 2: just what happens now at third. And where does Cabby
- 32:45Speaker 2: play in all this, right? Because that was the big
- 32:47Speaker 2: question is, where does Cabby grow from it? You know,
- 32:49Speaker 2: and I don't know.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Is he the second baseman? Is he part of a trade?
- 32:54Speaker 1: Is Volby part of a trade? I don't know.
- 32:58Speaker 2: I don't even know the free agency right now coming
- 33:01Speaker 2: into this year. I don't even know because... It's.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Not a great free agent class. Of course, Struble is
- 33:09Speaker 1: the big free agent. But after that, there really isn't.
- 33:15Speaker 1: And of course, we don't know how long the work
- 33:18Speaker 1: stoppage is going to be. That's the other thing.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Well, let's get to that. Picking your postseason opponent, I
- 33:27Speaker 2: don't really know where that came from, but I think
- 33:30Speaker 2: it's kind of ridiculous.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Well, it's a gimmick, Alex, Alex, it's a gimmick. Um, I,
- 33:36Speaker 1: you know, I do like the fact that they want
- 33:38Speaker 1: to bring it down to 154, uh, give some, give
- 33:41Speaker 1: the guys a couple of extra days off during the week. Um, uh,
- 33:48Speaker 1: I do like the fact that they want to bring
- 33:49Speaker 1: the division series to best of seven. So I do
- 33:52Speaker 1: like that, but that pick your opponent is, you know,
- 33:55Speaker 1: that that's, that's ridiculous. Um, but, uh, We'll see what happens,
- 34:01Speaker 1: but getting back to the Yankees and, you know, Yankee
- 34:04Speaker 1: fans and Yankee fans crack me up. You know that
- 34:07Speaker 1: they crack me up, Alex. Well, I'm not here.
- 34:09Speaker 2: To stop either, but I will say judge standing by
- 34:14Speaker 2: Boone is very indicative of where they're going to stay
- 34:16Speaker 2: with coming to 2027.
- 34:20Speaker 1: You are 100% correct there. The fact that the best
- 34:23Speaker 1: player in the league, the best player on their team
- 34:26Speaker 1: has the manager's back. Um, is good for the manager. And, uh,
- 34:32Speaker 1: so we'll, we'll know soon if Boone is going to
- 34:34Speaker 1: be back or not. I'm sure he will be, but, uh, um,
- 34:38Speaker 1: judge also saying the other day that any part of
- 34:42Speaker 1: a world series team moving forward has to have Anthony
- 34:47Speaker 1: Volpe as part of that team. So he isn't, he's
- 34:52Speaker 1: pushing his power as the best player on the team.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Um, And he's not wrong. He had the grand slam
- 34:59Speaker 2: in 24. The only reason he fell short was because
- 35:02Speaker 2: that injury in 25, where he dove for that ball
- 35:04Speaker 2: in May of 25. I was there for that. Other
- 35:07Speaker 2: than that, he's come back with a vengeance. And I
- 35:09Speaker 2: think he needs to be on this team in the
- 35:12Speaker 2: starting lineup in 2027 at second base. But you also
- 35:17Speaker 2: mentioned the Boris factor with him, right? So we'll see
- 35:19Speaker 2: where that comes into play.
- 35:20Speaker 1: Yes, there's a Boris factor, and that changes a lot
- 35:24Speaker 1: of dynamics in player team management discussions. But just getting back,
- 35:31Speaker 1: like I said, Yankee fans were dumping on Hal Steinbrenner
- 35:35Speaker 1: and Cashman. And if you listen to some of these
- 35:39Speaker 1: Yankee callers, you would think the Yankees haven't been over
- 35:43Speaker 1: 500 since 1970. Meanwhile, it's just it's unbelievable to me.
- 35:49Speaker 1: And the Yankees have paid four billion dollars. during this
- 35:56Speaker 1: 17-year drought in player salaries. That's just player salaries, $ 4 billion.
- 36:01Speaker 1: It doesn't include the best training facility. They probably have
- 36:04Speaker 1: the best analytic people, the best scouts. The Yankees still
- 36:08Speaker 1: have a lot of old-time, and I don't mean that
- 36:11Speaker 1: they're old as far as age goes, but conventional scouts.
- 36:14Speaker 2: Old-school guys, exactly. So, Louie, and look, you know, not
- 36:20Speaker 2: only that, but they just have... And now they have
- 36:23Speaker 2: an investor. They have Apollo management coming in to maybe
- 36:27Speaker 2: fix things up or something. I don't know what they're
- 36:29Speaker 2: going to exactly do. I hear the Steinmaners have less
- 36:32Speaker 2: of a stake now than they did prior to the year.
- 36:35Speaker 2: So I don't know what that all means. But maybe
- 36:37Speaker 2: Apollo is going to come in and change things too.
- 36:39Speaker 2: We don't know yet how that's going to look. But
- 36:42Speaker 2: it is worth noting.
- 36:43Speaker 1: It is worth noting, yeah. I don't know what kind
- 36:46Speaker 1: of influence they'll have. But yes, it's definitely worth noting.
- 36:50Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean, they keep spending. And they obviously
- 36:55Speaker 2: gave that nine-year contract to Judge because you had to.
- 36:58Speaker 2: You couldn't let him go to the Bay.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Gotcha.
- 37:02Speaker 2: And on the other side, I feel bad for the guy.
- 37:09Speaker 2: I feel bad for him because the Yanks need to
- 37:11Speaker 2: give this guy a ring. I mean, if he doesn't
- 37:13Speaker 2: get a ring, he will not be ranked up there
- 37:16Speaker 2: with the legends because he didn't have the ring. Am
- 37:18Speaker 2: I right in that or what?
- 37:26Speaker 3: I think talking about a player's individual career, if he
- 37:31Speaker 3: doesn't have a ring, his greatness, his legacy, That's the
- 37:56Speaker 3: way I see it.
- 37:59Speaker 1: Great. A legendary right-hander. Let's see. Greatest right-hander there in
- 38:07Speaker 1: Yankee history. Okay, Joe DiMaggio. Who's second? Aaron Judge?
- 38:19Speaker 2: Well, yeah, in the power regard, I would agree with
- 38:21Speaker 2: that one. Although it'd be sort of like Mattingly-like, right?
- 38:24Speaker 2: Because Mattingly went down without winning a ring, and yet
- 38:28Speaker 2: he's considered one of the all-time greats.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Absolutely. He had five of the greatest seasons that any
- 38:36Speaker 1: major league could possibly have. You know, and the fact
- 38:38Speaker 1: that they put these other guys in the Hall of
- 38:41Speaker 1: Fame and don't put him in is mind-boggling to me.
- 38:46Speaker 1: It really is.
- 38:48Speaker 2: And he also had the back injury, which depleted his
- 38:50Speaker 2: time a little bit, but.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Let me ask you, Mattingly, the Cora situation with Philly,
- 38:58Speaker 2: they may not bring him on. He doesn't want the job.
- 39:00Speaker 2: I mean, where does Philly go? And it doesn't look
- 39:05Speaker 2: like there's a main opening in the Bronx, but does
- 39:07Speaker 2: Mattingly still stay in baseball somewhere?
- 39:10Speaker 1: Well, I have a feeling that the Cora rejection of
- 39:14Speaker 1: the Phillies, saying he's not going to manage anywhere in 2027...
- 39:18Speaker 1: And I'm not sure that's 100%. I wouldn't be surprised
- 39:22Speaker 1: if he comes in mid-season and manages somewhere. But I
- 39:28Speaker 1: think that puts Don Manningly... back into the Phillies mix. Remember,
- 39:32Speaker 1: his son's a general manager of the Phillies. So that's
- 39:35Speaker 1: got to help him a little bit. If Manningly wants
- 39:39Speaker 1: to come back. And, you know, we've heard yes and
- 39:42Speaker 1: no stories on that. So.
- 39:47Speaker 2: The one last thing about the Yankees that I think
- 39:50Speaker 2: everybody's pissed about is the fundamentals. And I think that's
- 39:52Speaker 2: the big issue here is why do they keep exiting
- 39:55Speaker 2: the playoffs so early? Cause they have no fundamentals that
- 39:59Speaker 2: managing is that all around coaching. I mean, it's, or
- 40:02Speaker 2: is it just a player mentality? I, you know, if
- 40:05Speaker 2: I'm jazz Chisman, I get the ball in a slow roller.
- 40:07Speaker 2: I'm not throwing it where he threw it. I'd hold
- 40:10Speaker 2: onto the ball and just not throw it anywhere. Again,
- 40:13Speaker 2: I can't blame Austin Wells for running the third in
- 40:16Speaker 2: a crucial situation. That's your only opportunity tonight. And you
- 40:19Speaker 2: see the ball rolling around the corner. I'm going for it, too. Like,
- 40:22Speaker 2: I can't fault him for that. You can't blame him
- 40:25Speaker 2: because that's the night.
- 40:27Speaker 1: I agree with you on everything you said, except the
- 40:29Speaker 1: Wells thing. He should have stopped that second. He should
- 40:31Speaker 1: have because it was only one nothing, you know, at
- 40:34Speaker 1: that point. But you're right. Is it is it the
- 40:39Speaker 1: coach's fault? during spring training, do they ignore fundamentals? And yes,
- 40:45Speaker 1: there's been enough scouting reports that say, oh, the Yankees
- 40:48Speaker 1: will give us extra outs. Dodgers famously two years ago,
- 40:53Speaker 1: the Yankees will give us extra outs. And you certainly
- 40:56Speaker 1: don't want to give a team like the Dodgers extra outs. So,
- 41:00Speaker 1: and they play the team just the opposite of them
- 41:02Speaker 1: in Tampa, where it's all about fundamentals. And, you know,
- 41:09Speaker 1: The last, the three remaining teams in the AL playoffs,
- 41:12Speaker 1: including the two tonight. Cleveland, the 27th largest payroll. Tampa,
- 41:18Speaker 1: the 28th. The White Sox, the 29th. Think about that. Milwaukee,
- 41:24Speaker 1: the 19th. So, you know.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Well, I get your point there. And they're winning scrappily.
- 41:33Speaker 2: You know, they're not, they're, yeah. And that's the other thing.
- 41:35Speaker 2: At least this team. show that they can win without
- 41:39Speaker 2: the long ball every night. Like they showed scrappiness. I mean,
- 41:41Speaker 2: they won a lot of three, nothing, two, nothing, three,
- 41:45Speaker 2: one games. I mean, they didn't not win the close ones. And.
- 41:50Speaker 1: Was it happiness, Alex, or was it their incredible pitching staff? Alex,
- 41:54Speaker 1: the Yankees pitching staff this year is not getting enough
- 41:57Speaker 1: credit for every night out. They didn't throw a stiff
- 42:02Speaker 1: out there one night.
- 42:04Speaker 2: At all.
- 42:04Speaker 1: No.
- 42:06Speaker 2: And I know, I thought that was an interesting question
- 42:08Speaker 2: to David Cohn. Kay asked him, you know, does that
- 42:11Speaker 2: put pressure on the pitcher? And I think it does.
- 42:14Speaker 2: You know, I mean, they relied on them so much
- 42:16Speaker 2: that I think it would get to these guys to, like,
- 42:19Speaker 2: be pressured to just perform every night.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Absolutely. No question.
- 42:24Speaker 2: But they did it. And even Sam, in that wild
- 42:26Speaker 2: card game, 117 pitches. It's just... It may not be
- 42:33Speaker 2: a managerial thing. It's a cultural thing. That's the problem
- 42:36Speaker 2: that I'm seeing with the Yankees.
- 42:38Speaker 1: It's a cultural thing. Even Monday night, when Schlittler didn't
- 42:41Speaker 1: have his best stuff, with all those errors behind him,
- 42:47Speaker 1: Tampa Bay had all those scoring opportunities, and they didn't
- 42:51Speaker 1: score against Schlittler. They were 0 for 10. Cam held
- 42:57Speaker 1: them for 0 for 10. Schlittler's a great pitcher. He's
- 43:00Speaker 1: going to win the Cy Young.
- 43:01Speaker 2: And they better keep him. They can't trade him. They
- 43:03Speaker 2: better keep him.
- 43:05Speaker 1: Alex, don't even think about that. That's not happening. He's there.
- 43:09Speaker 1: All right.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Well, speaking of arms, you mentioned Scooble, and it brought
- 43:12Speaker 2: me to this other question. Mets are one of the
- 43:15Speaker 2: top three in the running for him because, obviously, they
- 43:18Speaker 2: can afford him.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 43:21Speaker 2: But imagine they get him, and then another... Do you
- 43:23Speaker 2: think it's worth spending on Scooble, or what? Should the
- 43:26Speaker 2: Mets get him?
- 43:28Speaker 1: I don't think it's... I really don't. Um... He was
- 43:33Speaker 1: hurt during the season this year. It depends on the term.
- 43:43Speaker 1: That's what happens.
- 43:43Speaker 2: Probably dropping money on Lindor and Soto. I don't think
- 43:46Speaker 2: they want to keep spending money on these guys that
- 43:48Speaker 2: are not producing a championship yet.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Well, you can't ask for more what Soto has done
- 43:55Speaker 1: for the Mets these last two years. I mean, you can't.
- 44:00Speaker 1: And only one team wins a championship.
- 44:02Speaker 2: And I think I saw he had 40 homers this year, right?
- 44:05Speaker 2: Or something like that. Or was that last year? One
- 44:07Speaker 2: of the years.
- 44:10Speaker 1: He had 28, 27, 28. He would have hit 40
- 44:12Speaker 1: if he didn't miss, you know, or they missed 60 games.
- 44:17Speaker 2: 60 games.
- 44:17Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 44:20Speaker 2: Well, we'll have to see what happens with all this.
- 44:22Speaker 2: I'm just thinking of Freddie Peralta. He was on the
- 44:23Speaker 2: Mets to begin the year. Now he's in the ALCS
- 44:27Speaker 2: with the Rays. Just maybe a better situation for him.
- 44:30Speaker 2: Is that what it was?
- 44:32Speaker 1: Again, Freddie Peralta, his issues, they were saying that, you know, Snyder,
- 44:37Speaker 1: the Tampa Bay coach, changed his arm ankle. Yeah, that's
- 44:40Speaker 1: all well and good. But Freddie Peralta's had a successful
- 44:42Speaker 1: career before he got to the Mets. And the fact
- 44:45Speaker 1: that he was so terrible for the Mets, that's on
- 44:48Speaker 1: Freddie Peralta. Yes, the Mets coaching staff might have been
- 44:51Speaker 1: able to make some kind of adjustments. But here's a
- 44:53Speaker 1: guy who won 17 games last year for Milwaukee. You know,
- 44:57Speaker 1: some of the players have to be responsible. That's just
- 45:00Speaker 1: my take on it.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Well, we'll have to see. And is Senga your closer?
- 45:07Speaker 2: Speaking of Milwaukee, is Devin Williams back to that? Or
- 45:09Speaker 2: is Senga your closer? What are they going to do
- 45:11Speaker 2: with that?
- 45:12Speaker 1: I don't believe that Senga is going to be the closer,
- 45:15Speaker 1: even though he did show closing ability, which surprised everybody.
- 45:19Speaker 1: I'm sure it'll be Devin Williams, or they might get
- 45:21Speaker 1: somebody else along with Devin Williams, who's on contract for
- 45:25Speaker 1: another year. I don't know what they're going to do
- 45:28Speaker 1: with Senga. I know he's a star. but maybe he'll
- 45:33Speaker 1: be a set. I mean, he, he actually did terrific
- 45:37Speaker 1: when they put him in the bullpen, which I was
- 45:39Speaker 1: shocked that they did. All right.
- 45:42Speaker 2: So let me ask you the burning question of the
- 45:44Speaker 2: day then, because they don't fire him now, but you
- 45:48Speaker 2: is judges is, is Boone not on a hot seat
- 45:51Speaker 2: in 27 at all? I guess he got a free pass.
- 45:53Speaker 2: Is this, you know, I mean, I feel like he's
- 45:55Speaker 2: never going to be on the hot seat here.
- 45:57Speaker 1: Well, if he's, If he's not in the hot seat now, Alex,
- 46:04Speaker 1: I don't think he's going to be on the hot
- 46:05Speaker 1: seat next year. You know, maybe this next week we'll
- 46:09Speaker 1: find out that DeAnke is going to make a move.
- 46:11Speaker 1: I do not think he'll quit. But he was a
- 46:18Speaker 1: broken man. If you watch the press conference after game three,
- 46:23Speaker 1: he was a tired man. That took a lot out
- 46:29Speaker 1: of him. And you only have so many years for that.
- 46:32Speaker 1: And I know he's not an old man. He's a
- 46:34Speaker 1: young man. But that, you could see how much it
- 46:44Speaker 1: took out of him. So he just might say, time
- 46:48Speaker 1: to move on. I'll take a year off. I'll go
- 46:52Speaker 1: back to broadcasting for a year or two. Or he'll
- 46:55Speaker 1: just stick it out.
- 46:57Speaker 2: Is it possible the Angels are still waiting on someone
- 47:00Speaker 2: Manigero changes elsewhere to see who becomes free. Because nothing's
- 47:04Speaker 2: been announced at all.
- 47:05Speaker 1: I doubt that very much. I would doubt that, Alex.
- 47:09Speaker 1: They're waiting to see somebody else loosen up. I really would.
- 47:15Speaker 1: But if he doesn't get fired in the next 10
- 47:17Speaker 1: days or resigns, then he's going to be there. It's
- 47:22Speaker 1: not going to happen in the middle of January.
- 47:25Speaker 2: No, it wouldn't because they have to get back to
- 47:27Speaker 2: spring training a month from now. All right. One last thing.
- 47:33Speaker 2: You're not a fan of the Yankees, but in these situations,
- 47:36Speaker 2: would you rather lose to the champion, right? That's what
- 47:38Speaker 2: they always say. So you'd want the race to go
- 47:40Speaker 2: on and win the whole thing.
- 47:41Speaker 1: Well, the fact that I'm not a Yankee fan is,
- 47:44Speaker 1: like I always say, I'll always talk objectively about the Yankees. Alex,
- 47:48Speaker 1: when you lose, you lose. You know, when I was
- 47:54Speaker 1: with the Nets... We lost to the champions three straight years.
- 47:59Speaker 1: Did it make me feel any better?
- 48:01Speaker 2: It didn't.
- 48:04Speaker 1: It didn't. You know, twice in the finals and once
- 48:08Speaker 1: to Detroit in the conference semifinals. And Detroit beat the
- 48:13Speaker 1: Lakers that year. No. To me, it doesn't.
- 48:17Speaker 2: That was a crazy team, too. Ben Wallace, Chauncey Billups.
- 48:20Speaker 2: I mean, the whole thing was just.
- 48:22Speaker 1: That was a crazy team. That was a good team,
- 48:23Speaker 1: and they were well-coached by Larry Brown.
- 48:26Speaker 2: Well, we'll have to see, Louie. And as things move
- 48:30Speaker 2: forward with the series, I don't want to believe that
- 48:32Speaker 2: the Dodgers win it all. It's going to be the lockout.
- 48:35Speaker 2: I want to believe that they lose. We still have
- 48:37Speaker 2: a chance of not a lockout, but maybe there's no difference.
- 48:39Speaker 2: I don't know anymore.
- 48:41Speaker 1: Yeah, no, you're right. I don't know. I would like
- 48:44Speaker 1: to see Tampa win. I really would. They play the ball.
- 48:49Speaker 1: I hate to use this term in sports. They play
- 48:52Speaker 1: the game the right way, but they do. And so
- 48:57Speaker 1: does Milwaukee. So it would be nice to see somebody
- 49:02Speaker 1: besides the Dodger Blue winning it.
- 49:08Speaker 2: It'd be a change of pace, that's for sure. And
- 49:10Speaker 2: it would save the three-peat for the Yankees. Am I
- 49:17Speaker 2: right on that? Or is it four-peat now? I'm losing track.
- 49:20Speaker 1: It's a three-peat. It's a three-peat. But even if the
- 49:24Speaker 1: Dodgers lose this year, either to Milwaukee or to whoever
- 49:29Speaker 1: they play in the World Series, they're going to be
- 49:31Speaker 1: the favorite likelihood in 27.
- 49:35Speaker 2: I want to close out by where we started. Apparently,
- 49:38Speaker 2: Molly Walker is getting comments on Jonathan Quick coming back.
- 49:42Speaker 2: I don't think that's going to happen for the Rangers
- 49:44Speaker 2: anytime soon.
- 49:45Speaker 1: I actually just saw that while we were talking. He's retired. Yeah,
- 49:50Speaker 1: maybe he could come back. But Alex, he's not going
- 49:54Speaker 1: to be able to play 60 games. But can he
- 49:58Speaker 1: come back? Yeah, maybe he would. I'm sure that you're
- 50:03Speaker 1: going to hear a lot of hellabook but it's not
- 50:07Speaker 1: going to be hell of.
- 50:07Speaker 2: A with all these injuries happening. It's amazing that I
- 50:12Speaker 2: guess Brown started all five in their opening in their
- 50:16Speaker 2: second preseason game. He started all five. Like it was nothing.
- 50:18Speaker 2: It was kind of interesting, right?
- 50:21Speaker 1: I'm sorry. Who was that?
- 50:22Speaker 2: Mike Brown started all five in the preseason.
- 50:25Speaker 1: Yes, I did see that. Yeah. I think what he
- 50:28Speaker 1: did was, What he wanted to tell them, we're not
- 50:31Speaker 1: goofing around. It's business as usual. And if we want
- 50:34Speaker 1: to defend our title and become a handful of teams
- 50:37Speaker 1: to win back-to-back, which is a great accomplishment, we got
- 50:41Speaker 1: to work from day one. Party time, SNL appearances, Canyon
- 50:47Speaker 1: of Hero parades, that's all behind us. It's time to
- 50:50Speaker 1: work now.
- 50:53Speaker 2: That's why they came back down from 0-2 to come
- 50:56Speaker 2: back and beat the Hawks and go in their run. So,
- 50:58Speaker 2: you know, because that, look, no offense to Thibodeau, that
- 51:01Speaker 2: would not have happened. I don't know if they'd rebound
- 51:03Speaker 2: that fast under Thibodeau.
- 51:04Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 51:05Speaker 2: It's just a different culture now.
- 51:07Speaker 1: Well, again, Thibodeau played, the Eastern Conference was a little
- 51:11Speaker 1: tougher when Thibodeau coached a little bit, but that's okay.
- 51:14Speaker 1: You are, you know, you play who's in front of you.
- 51:17Speaker 2: Well, I think this conference is a lot more difficult.
- 51:19Speaker 1: It's much tougher this year. It should be, at least
- 51:21Speaker 1: on paper. than last year for sure not.
- 51:24Speaker 2: Even because of LeBron I think Giannis going to the
- 51:26Speaker 2: heat changes everything too so.
- 51:29Speaker 1: Yeah and uh yeah I mean you know we'll see
- 51:34Speaker 1: we'll see we'll see the first couple of months uh how.
- 51:37Speaker 2: These teams sleeping on Boston but they still got a
- 51:40Speaker 2: good team up there I.
- 51:41Speaker 1: Mean yeah I mean I don't understand the trade of
- 51:44Speaker 1: uh Jalen Brown for George but we'll see he's a
- 51:47Speaker 1: good coach they seem to they seem to know what
- 51:49Speaker 1: they're doing um So one last thing. Devils have been inconsistent.
- 51:58Speaker 1: I know we always like to throw in a little
- 51:59Speaker 1: other hockey stuff. Devils have been inconsistent the first week
- 52:02Speaker 1: of the season. Their goaltending is a major problem so far.
- 52:07Speaker 1: Sheldon Keefe is on the hot seat. The least known
- 52:10Speaker 1: New York area coach, Sheldon Keefe, is on the hot seat.
- 52:14Speaker 1: And the cheap shot that Frank Nazar gave on Horvath
- 52:21Speaker 1: the other night hopefully doesn't keep Horvath out of the
- 52:24Speaker 1: lineup very long because they're playing without Barzell with the
- 52:28Speaker 1: knee injury has not played a game yet and Romanov
- 52:32Speaker 1: is out for the year another devastating injury the shot
- 52:37Speaker 1: on Horvath wasn't he wasn't a dirty player but it
- 52:40Speaker 1: was a cheap shot he was suspended two games and
- 52:44Speaker 1: for the Blackhawks so I just wanted to throw it
- 52:47Speaker 1: in there Matthew Schaefer, by the way, he hasn't scored
- 52:52Speaker 1: a goal yet, but he had to post twice against
- 52:54Speaker 1: the Rangers. He's as dominant as... He's irreplaceable for the Islanders,
- 53:02Speaker 1: even though he's only 19. All right.
- 53:05Speaker 2: One last thing. It is Columbus Day weekend, and you're
- 53:07Speaker 2: a proud Italian, Louis. So, any... I mean, there's so
- 53:11Speaker 2: many standout Italian players that played across the board, Esposito
- 53:15Speaker 2: and Hockey, right? And then you had Yogi in baseball,
- 53:19Speaker 2: DiMaggio in baseball, and a lot of these other guys.
- 53:23Speaker 2: But who was sort of your role model going up sports-wise?
- 53:26Speaker 1: Well, again, I root for the guys on my team,
- 53:33Speaker 1: no matter what their ethnic background is. But I would
- 53:36Speaker 1: have to say, and I wouldn't say I had any
- 53:39Speaker 1: mentors or idols like that. I idoled greatness. And, you know,
- 53:47Speaker 1: throughout throughout my life as a sports fan. Joe Namath,
- 53:54Speaker 1: and he wasn't Italian. Seaver, he wasn't Italian. Obviously, I
- 54:00Speaker 1: liked Piazza, not because he was Italian, because he was great.
- 54:04Speaker 1: So just, you know, the name of a few. Jason
- 54:06Speaker 1: Kidd kept me employed. Jason Kidd kept me employed for
- 54:08Speaker 1: another seven years.
- 54:09Speaker 2: Oh, did he ever. They can't take little Italy off
- 54:16Speaker 2: the map, right, Louie? They can never do that.
- 54:19Speaker 1: Yeah, that was not very nice by your mayor. That
- 54:24Speaker 1: wasn't very nice. But, you know, we got that done.
- 54:28Speaker 1: And the Columbus statue was still up in Columbus Circle. So,
- 54:33Speaker 1: you know, unfortunately, I don't know how good the weather
- 54:36Speaker 1: is going to be on Monday, but there'll be the
- 54:38Speaker 1: Columbus Day Parade. And our buddy, Mr. Piscopo, will be
- 54:42Speaker 1: broadcasting from there on Monday morning. So it's all good.
- 54:48Speaker 2: And it must be always a good time to be
- 54:50Speaker 2: an Italian-American for you, Lou. And you're going to have
- 54:52Speaker 2: a biscotti later today, right?
- 54:54Speaker 1: Well, Alex, this is what I've had so far today.
- 54:57Speaker 1: For lunch, I had eggplant parmesan sandwich, okay? You can't
- 55:00Speaker 1: get more Italian than that. And I'll have a biscotti later.
- 55:04Speaker 2: There you go. Lou Terminello. Terminello's take here on Columbus
- 55:07Speaker 2: Day Weekend. One leg up Alex Media. We'll talk to
- 55:10Speaker 2: you soon right here on this platform.
- 55:14Speaker 1: Thank you, Alex.
