Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Returning to Seawheeze & Dreaming Bigger
Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily and Badi here you are listening to
- 0:19Speaker 1: five minute Friday on Hurdle.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Let's talk about seawees.
- 0:24Speaker 1: I went last week to Vancouver for the first time
- 0:28Speaker 1: since I ran this Lulemon Race celebration party situation back
- 0:35Speaker 1: in twenty eighteen, and the vibes were just as high
- 0:40Speaker 1: as I remember eight years ago. For those of you
- 0:43Speaker 1: that are out of the loop in the twenty tens,
- 0:45Speaker 1: I don't know if there's an appropriate term for that era,
- 0:47Speaker 1: but that race in Vancouver, where Lululemon was founded, is
- 0:52Speaker 1: their flagship.
- 0:53Speaker 2: It was huge.
- 0:54Speaker 1: It was a big, big moment, and then the last
- 0:57Speaker 1: time they held the race was in twenty nineteen. This
- 1:00Speaker 1: is the first time that it came back, and it
- 1:03Speaker 1: came back with a vengeance, to say the least.
- 1:07Speaker 2: I have some stats here.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Seventy six percent of the twenty twenty six participants identified
- 1:13Speaker 1: as women, and forty six percent of those racing were
- 1:18Speaker 1: first time half marathoners, which was just so fun to
- 1:22Speaker 1: be a part of this really special moment for them.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I also standing in the corrals before the race started,
- 1:30Speaker 1: it was really giving every woman's marathon vibes, which was
- 1:34Speaker 1: really fun and so supportive, so much cool hairstyles on
- 1:39Speaker 1: the course. I really loved the different outfits that I
- 1:42Speaker 1: was seeing a lot of sports brawlayering, which is inspiring me.
- 1:46Speaker 1: But beyond the race and how cool it was, I
- 1:49Speaker 1: have to give Luleman props for the way that they
- 1:53Speaker 1: really there was no small detail that weekend, like they
- 1:57Speaker 1: really think of it as a complete experience, from the
- 2:02Speaker 1: expo and the shopping which people go feral for these
- 2:07Speaker 1: items that they sell at the expo. It's very different
- 2:09Speaker 1: than just snagging a race shirt or a pair of shorts.
- 2:12Speaker 1: It's they have an entire collection, it's limited edition, there's
- 2:16Speaker 1: a maximum amount of items that people can buy.
- 2:19Speaker 2: It's a whole thing. And they also think of things.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Like yoga, and they have which I'm going to talk
- 2:27Speaker 1: about in depth, a vision and goal session that they
- 2:30Speaker 1: typically run the day before the marathon. Now, Lula Lemon
- 2:35Speaker 1: as a company is really big on thinking about their
- 2:38Speaker 1: employee and their journey beyond just the work that they
- 2:41Speaker 1: do at the company, and so there's a lot of
- 2:44Speaker 1: emphasis there on corporate development, personal development, and encouraging them
- 2:49Speaker 1: to chase after things that excite them far beyond what's
- 2:53Speaker 1: happening in their individual roles at lul Lemon. They bring
- 2:59Speaker 1: that vibe to race weekend and offer that vision and
- 3:03Speaker 1: goals type work in the form of a session on
- 3:07Speaker 1: the day before the race. Now I tell you all
- 3:10Speaker 1: this because eight years ago, when I was last in Vancouver,
- 3:13Speaker 1: I went to that vision and Goals session and that
- 3:16Speaker 1: was the very first time that I ever said, Okay,
- 3:20Speaker 1: I want Hurdle to become the main thing. I was
- 3:23Speaker 1: about almost a year and a half into my freelance
- 3:26Speaker 1: journey at this point. I had started the show six
- 3:30Speaker 1: or seven months before, and I stood on stage after
- 3:34Speaker 1: going through an entire vision and goals packet and writing
- 3:38Speaker 1: down the things that excite me and scare me, and
- 3:41Speaker 1: I told hundreds of individuals, I want to do this
- 3:47Speaker 1: full time. I want to figure out a way to
- 3:49Speaker 1: podcast full time, to tell more stories, to meet more people,
- 3:54Speaker 1: to travel the world, and to do this thing. And
- 3:56Speaker 1: I didn't really know what that could or even would
- 4:00Speaker 1: like if I accomplished all of my goals, but I
- 4:04Speaker 1: was excited to put it out there for the first
- 4:07Speaker 1: time and it felt so so grand and so big.
- 4:12Speaker 1: And so I was in the convention center the day
- 4:16Speaker 1: before the race. I was there for a session where
- 4:19Speaker 1: they talked to us about all the logistics of the
- 4:22Speaker 1: next morning and how it would look and where we
- 4:24Speaker 1: should go and where we should be and et cetera,
- 4:26Speaker 1: et cetera. And so I'm walking out of that session
- 4:28Speaker 1: and I walk by the massive room with that exact
- 4:31Speaker 1: same stage at the front of the room, and not
- 4:34Speaker 1: that long before the vision and Goal session had got out,
- 4:38Speaker 1: and I just looked at that stage and I was like,
- 4:40Speaker 1: how much has happened in the last eight years. How
- 4:44Speaker 1: much has happened in the last eight years, How much
- 4:48Speaker 1: has changed? I have done things now that I couldn't
- 4:51Speaker 1: even dream because I didn't know that they were possible
- 4:55Speaker 1: for me. I've met hurdlers that live in foreign county.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I've hosted hurdler meetups in places like Tokyo and Verlin
- 5:04Speaker 1: and Los Angeles. I've hosted live shows domestically and abroad.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I have met so many incredible human beings who have
- 5:12Speaker 1: had the privilege to have on this podcast as guests.
- 5:16Speaker 1: I have partnered with brands that felt like a fever dream,
- 5:20Speaker 1: like I feel so grateful for this journey. And as
- 5:24Speaker 1: I stood there looking at that stage, I was overwhelmed
- 5:28Speaker 1: with that gratitude and also this resounding thought that I'm
- 5:32Speaker 1: still just at the beginning.
- 5:34Speaker 2: There is so much that I want to do.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Still, if you could tell Emily eight years ago that
- 5:39Speaker 1: she would be approached by iHeartRadio and that she'd be
- 5:43Speaker 1: on their women's sports network, like what? But I feel
- 5:48Speaker 1: so so fortunate, and it is not lost on me
- 5:52Speaker 1: that it has also required so much work. I was
- 5:57Speaker 1: the sole person editing, Pretty Saying, hosting, doing everything for
- 6:02Speaker 1: the show for seven years, and I.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Still do so much of it on my own. So
- 6:08Speaker 2: I'm just grateful.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I'm grateful for the journey, and I'm feeling like, what
- 6:12Speaker 1: a really special full circle moment. I had the best time,
- 6:15Speaker 1: not just running that race on Saturday, but the whole
- 6:19Speaker 1: weekend was really soul filling, surrounded by so many outstanding
- 6:23Speaker 1: human beings that are just working to show up and
- 6:27Speaker 1: be their best.
- 6:28Speaker 2: So I wanted to share that with you.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And I want to say thank you to Lulum for
- 6:32Speaker 1: having me, and I want to say thank you for
- 6:35Speaker 1: all of you. Thank you to all of you for
- 6:37Speaker 1: being out there and for supporting my journey. And I
- 6:41Speaker 1: want this to be a reminder to think big, to
- 6:44Speaker 1: dream big, because it starts there right when you start
- 6:48Speaker 1: to think about what could be. When you start to think,
- 6:51Speaker 1: what if I open myself up to the best case scenario?
- 6:55Speaker 1: That is so important instead of only thinking about what
- 7:00Speaker 1: could go wrong, look at what can happen when you
- 7:03Speaker 1: allow yourself to think big and ask what could go right?
- 7:06Speaker 1: What if this is all better than I imagined? What
- 7:09Speaker 1: if this is all better than I imagined? It's kind
- 7:13Speaker 1: of exciting, right, I know, I know, I know it
- 7:15Speaker 1: is all right. So on that note, thought prompt for
- 7:19Speaker 1: you this week? What is one thing that you want
- 7:21Speaker 1: to put out into the universe right now? What is
- 7:23Speaker 1: one big goal that you have on your radar that
- 7:28Speaker 1: you are chasing right now? And how can you go
- 7:33Speaker 1: after it? Tag me if you have one that you
- 7:35Speaker 1: want to share. I want to hear about it. Okay,
- 7:38Speaker 1: now let's do a listener question. This one comes from Aaron. Hey, Emily,
- 7:43Speaker 1: thank you for your marathon prep playbook Part one.
- 7:47Speaker 2: If you don't follow along with.
- 7:48Speaker 1: The substack, I have a substack comes out every Friday,
- 7:52Speaker 1: and last week I shared my marathon prep playbook there.
- 7:55Speaker 2: I will link that in the show notes.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Aaron says, your five steps reminded me of when I
- 8:00Speaker 1: trained for a half marathon a couple of years ago.
- 8:02Speaker 1: It would have been great to reference your weekly framework
- 8:05Speaker 1: when structuring my training. I offer a weekly framework in
- 8:08Speaker 1: that post of what your training could look like. My
- 8:10Speaker 1: question is to do with transitioning from training back into
- 8:12Speaker 1: life slash works regular daily routine when you're short on time?
- 8:17Speaker 1: What are your favorite tips, quick routines and or products
- 8:20Speaker 1: for when you don't have enough time for a full
- 8:22Speaker 1: shower or morning.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Routine after training.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Thanks Aaron from North Carolina Erin, I am also.
- 8:29Speaker 2: A dirty human. I'm laughing.
- 8:31Speaker 1: We are not dirty humans. We are just trying to
- 8:34Speaker 1: maximize our efforts here. I am a dry shampoo girly
- 8:37Speaker 1: through and through. I will not wash my hair every day,
- 8:40Speaker 1: but I will take a body shower after I work out,
- 8:43Speaker 1: so usually it's a quick rinse and then if the
- 8:45Speaker 1: hair isn't doing what I wanted to do, it's a
- 8:47Speaker 1: dry shampoo, maybe a quick light blow dry with the
- 8:51Speaker 1: dry shampoo in the sweat.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Situation, and then low bun And that's my go to
- 8:57Speaker 2: for when I'm in a rush.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I think your question also is hinting at the how
- 9:01Speaker 1: do I make this transition from being in such a
- 9:04Speaker 1: diligent routine to just trying to get back into the
- 9:07Speaker 1: swing of things after that's done. Two massive tips for
- 9:11Speaker 1: people after a marathon training cycle is one, allow yourself
- 9:14Speaker 1: to really relish in this accomplishment. You put in a
- 9:17Speaker 1: lot of opportunity costs there. You put in a lot
- 9:19Speaker 1: of hours and a lot of training, so appreciate that
- 9:23Speaker 1: you just did this massive thing. Allow yourself to have
- 9:26Speaker 1: a bit of downtime and then, I know it sounds.
- 9:30Speaker 2: A little a little much, but start.
- 9:34Speaker 1: To think about what the next goal is because you
- 9:36Speaker 1: are now a person that is a high achiever. You
- 9:38Speaker 1: are someone that is so capable of going after the
- 9:41Speaker 1: things that excite you. And so with that said, it's
- 9:44Speaker 1: always helpful to ask myself, what's.
- 9:46Speaker 2: The next thing that I want to do?
- 9:47Speaker 1: And I'm not saying that it's what's the next race
- 9:49Speaker 1: that I want to do, but start to think about
- 9:52Speaker 1: what other goals are on your radar. Again, That's why
- 9:55Speaker 1: that vision and goals exercise that Lula Lemondaes coupled up
- 9:58Speaker 1: with their Sees weekend makes so much sense because you're
- 10:02Speaker 1: already in this really, really cool spot where you are
- 10:05Speaker 1: prioritizing yourself. You're thinking about the things that excite you,
- 10:08Speaker 1: and so why not harness that energy that comes hand
- 10:11Speaker 1: in hand with marathon training and bring that into the
- 10:15Speaker 1: rest of your life. So ask yourself, what's the next
- 10:17Speaker 1: goal that I want to go after? Yeah, what's the
- 10:19Speaker 1: next thing that really makes me feel invigorated, excited, excited?
- 10:25Speaker 2: Something that you can go tackle?
- 10:26Speaker 1: Okay, And so the other thing that I will say
- 10:30Speaker 1: there is that, yes, think of the next goal and
- 10:32Speaker 1: then use that momentum. So use that momentum to your advantage.
- 10:37Speaker 1: You're used to having some sort of a routine. You're
- 10:40Speaker 1: used to be being diligent at that point, So harness that.
- 10:45Speaker 1: And maybe if your routine is now not completely revolving
- 10:48Speaker 1: around running, what else can you do that's you taking
- 10:50Speaker 1: care of yourself. Maybe this is a great time to
- 10:52Speaker 1: start journaling regularly. Maybe it's a really good time to
- 10:55Speaker 1: pour some of that energy into the relationships and the
- 10:58Speaker 1: people that you care about. Start to think of this
- 11:01Speaker 1: as your opportunity to get back to yourself, to give
- 11:04Speaker 1: back to yourself, and to do the things that make
- 11:06Speaker 1: you feel like your best you.
- 11:10Speaker 2: I hope this helps.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I'm thinking about the dry shampoo thing as well other
- 11:16Speaker 1: things that I'm doing that are like really helping me,
- 11:18Speaker 1: just like get out the door as fast as possible.
- 11:20Speaker 2: I now the older I get.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Also have a capsule wardrobe, like I have like a
- 11:23Speaker 1: few pieces that I know like each and every time
- 11:25Speaker 1: I put it on, it's a good It's gonna be
- 11:27Speaker 1: a good day one of those pieces actually, And this
- 11:31Speaker 1: athleta black T shirt. I have it not just in black,
- 11:34Speaker 1: I have it in a handful of colors. I swear
- 11:36Speaker 1: I can put that on with a pair of jeans,
- 11:38Speaker 1: walk out the door any day and be like, I'm good,
- 11:41Speaker 1: I'm solid. I love the way it fits. I love
- 11:43Speaker 1: how comfortable I feel. Everyone has has their own stuff
- 11:47Speaker 1: that makes them feel like their best self. But it's
- 11:50Speaker 1: nice when you feel like your best self and just
- 11:52Speaker 1: a jeans and a T shirt. All right, kind of
- 11:55Speaker 1: rambling here, So it means I shall let you go.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Make sure you're following along with Hurdle on. So it's
- 12:00Speaker 1: over at Hurdle Podcasts at Emily a Body. If you
- 12:02Speaker 1: have any other questions about sees or if I can
- 12:05Speaker 1: fill you in on any of the information. Also, I
- 12:06Speaker 1: want to give props to Lululemon. The entire format of
- 12:09Speaker 1: the weekend was so smart, not just in the pre
- 12:11Speaker 1: race activations like the vision and Goal session that I
- 12:14Speaker 1: mentioned and the yoga and the massive expo, but also
- 12:17Speaker 1: just race morning. They had a pre restretch that they
- 12:21Speaker 1: encouraged everyone to go to and it was at sunrise.
- 12:24Speaker 1: It was stunning, and then it easily transitioned into the
- 12:27Speaker 1: starting corrals like everyone just slowly walked over to the corrals.
- 12:30Speaker 1: It wasn't hectic, you didn't have to get there crazy
- 12:33Speaker 1: early before. And I just thought the mindful movement and
- 12:37Speaker 1: the way that they really thought about everything was really impressive.
- 12:41Speaker 1: So kudos, kudos kudos to Lululemon on such a fun weekend.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Again over at Emily Body at Hurdle Podcast and if
- 12:47Speaker 1: you have a listener question I want to answer it,
- 12:49Speaker 1: come on over and email me over at Hello at
- 12:52Speaker 1: hurdle dot us. Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Why you
