- 1:14though it's time for today's episode of Nick Carter. The original air date was
- 1:19June fourth of nineteen forty six. The title is the Case of the Dictaphone
- 1:25Murder. What's the matter? What it is? The case for Nick Clutter,
- 1:36Maud you take you this? It's the Case of the Dictaphone Murder.
- 1:47Another case for that most famous of all net hunters, the detective whose ability
- 1:51at solving crime is unequaled in the history of detective fiction. Nick Carter mass
- 1:56to Detective Nick should be here any minute. Mister Buckley told me on the
- 2:09phone that he'd be here at nine o'clock. That's why I came so early.
- 2:12It's only a few minutes after nine. Now, won't be long,
- 2:15you see. I've got a great good morning, Nick. Oh, good
- 2:19morning, mister Buckley, isn't it. Yes, mister Carter. When I
- 2:22met you after your lecture at the club the other evening, I said to
- 2:24myself, that's the man I'll go to. And I need help, and
- 2:28you need it now very much. I want you to thoroughly investigate Roger Denham,
- 2:31the man who's going to marry my daughter. What's he done. I
- 2:34don't know that he's done anything. I simply want to be sure that he's
- 2:37the right kind of man to be my son in law. Well, really,
- 2:38mister Buckley, I don't go in for that sort of thing at all.
- 2:40Oh, that's not the only reason. The Buckley Corporation is going to
- 2:45build a large new office building, and Roger Denham has been awarded the contract
- 2:47for the work. I want to know that he can carry it out successfully.
- 2:50The Buckley idea for the most part in crime and interest me. And
- 2:53I've made it my life work. What you're asking me to do does not
- 2:55interest me fur themore. I don't have the time for it. I see,
- 2:59Well, perhaps this so interested. It's an anonymous letter I received in
- 3:01the mail this morning. I don't put much stock in such things, but
- 3:06well, here it is. I here, Denim is married, has been
- 3:08for six years. His wife has now went our way to the Royal Arms
- 3:12Hotel. That will warn your daughter. Does that interest you, mister Carter?
- 3:15Not very much. Information like that can be checked. Two weeks lead
- 3:17to offer any problem. As far as I'm concerned, nothink mysterious about this
- 3:21note. It's typed on a decent grade of paper by a fairly good typewriter.
- 3:23Half of the letter l is missing because of a defective type bar,
- 3:27and there's no thread in it except one fact. Sorry, you won't act
- 3:30for me, mister Carter. And I suppose you Nick Carter's office, Patty
- 3:36barn speaking, Oh Nick Batt, Oh, yes here, just a minute,
- 3:39your next Dodger Mathison. We got you out of your office early,
- 3:43Maddy. What do you mean office? I've been there and now I'm up
- 3:46here at the Royal Arms. You're not busy, you might take a run
- 3:49over here. What's up? Murder guy named Roger Denham? You say Roger
- 3:53Denham? I did? Why? Friend of yours? Oh that's a coincidence,
- 3:59that's all, Carter, what's the story. I'm addie. He's been
- 4:01strangled at death. If you're not busy, right over what room three twelve?
- 4:06I wait for you, Nick, but make it snappy. I will
- 4:09so long to Carter. If something happened to Denham Buckley, why did you
- 4:14see him last yesterday evening? I called on him at the hotel to see
- 4:16if I could find out something about him personally. Why he's just been murdered?
- 4:21Murdered Denim? Yes, police are there in his room. Now let
- 4:26me have that letter again, of course here. Thanks top of the morning
- 4:31to you, Patty, Nick ke my brother to sit down, Walter.
- 4:34You and I are going out immediately. I'm going to look into a murderer.
- 4:47Hi Ddy, Well, Nick, you made good time. It's only
- 4:49nine thirty. Hello Buffalo Bill will if it ain't the terror of the police
- 4:56force him said, it's stuck. I you know I'm not stuck. Just
- 5:00thought Nick might like to have a look. See right, mad, what
- 5:02have you found so far? Oh there's the body Nick, right on the
- 5:04floor where we found it. He was strangled by some guy with an enormous
- 5:09pair of hands. He can still see the marks on his throat. Must
- 5:12have been a struggle the way the room is upset, but it wasn't robbery.
- 5:15Nothing is missing as far as we can tell. Any fingerprints, not
- 5:17not a one. Nate found a body when she came in to clean about
- 5:20nine o'clock. Corner says death occurred about eight thirty this morning, all night
- 5:25party or an early morning blowout. Now I checked with a room clerk and
- 5:28he says he saw no visitors this morning. But the telephone operator says,
- 5:31a guy named Johnny Casper call about seven forty five this morning. She said
- 5:38she knew his voice because he called so often before he came here, you
- 5:41know the way without asking of the desk. Yeah, said she wasn't listening,
- 5:45but she gathered from what she just happened to hear that Casper wanted to
- 5:49see downim right away. Well, we can look into that. When we
- 5:54ran room Prett, Well, he's mister Denham there who was calling mister Allen
- 5:59of the Buckley Corporate him and I can talk to him. To Denham?
- 6:00What do you want to talk to Denham about? Who are you? I'm
- 6:04sorry to say, you can't talk to Denham. He's just been murdered.
- 6:09Denham murdered? Did you say murdered? I did? What do you want
- 6:14to talk to him about? Why? I'm the chairman of the board for
- 6:16the Buckley Corporation and we've just awarded a contract of it's Dinnim for the construction
- 6:20of the Buckley Building and I wanted to make an appointment with him to settle
- 6:24a number of details. And you say he's unfortunately, yes, mister Allen,
- 6:29it's terribly unfortunate. Well goodbye, goodbye. Some fringer Deennim's nick business
- 6:36acquaintance apparently wanted to make a date with him. Virch a little lead for
- 6:41that. I'm thinking, here's something that's what does it? Maty? It's
- 6:44a piece of silk pocket off a shirt. I'd say found it clenched in
- 6:47Denham's fist. Must have been ripped off in the struggle. Oh, cuel
- 6:51By Gully. Now we can start investigating. It looks like it now evenly
- 6:56let me have this on our Look, Nick, that's the only real piece
- 6:59of evidence we got. I know it. I'll take care of it.
- 7:00Just want to find out what Mills made it and what they did with it.
- 7:04But Nick, look, why you look? I can do it faster
- 7:06than you can, Matry. You know that. Oh I suppose so?
- 7:10But I yeah, Wall, don't suppose you dig around and find out what
- 7:14meals this piece of silk came from. Shouldn't be difficult because there's a flaw
- 7:17here in the weave. Should make it edification easy. You better get going.
- 7:20Legwork always, leg works for Waldo. Good detective like me, and
- 7:26I ain't allowed to detect. A good detective follows ortis too. Don't forget
- 7:29that. Oh sure, sure I was young, Waldo. I'll see you
- 7:32at the office later. Well, I kind of guess there isn't much else
- 7:38here we can see. I'll just take a look around while i'm here.
- 7:44Looks as if somebody had been through it looking for something ways all upside down.
- 7:46Yeah that's what I thought. What are you suppose he was looking for?
- 7:49Maddy? You see this, this piece of wire sticking out under the
- 7:56closet door. No, what is it? Let's see, Hey, it
- 8:01goes up the closet war and through the ceiling. Mate still here, yeah,
- 8:03right outside? Hey may yes, Sam? Who lives in the room
- 8:07over this? Nobody, sir? It's empty? Or it was yesterday afternoon
- 8:11when I cleaned it up? About had pass four? That sounds suspicious in
- 8:13itself an empty hotel room these days, Royal lot, desk clerk, Please,
- 8:20desk clerk, this is Nick Carter on the murder of Denham, who
- 8:22has room for twelve? Missus Denham has an own, sir, Missus Denham,
- 8:26Yes, sir, why don't you come in? Just a few minutes
- 8:28ago? Denham reserved the room yesterday for friends, he said. When Missus
- 8:33Denham came in, I suppose he meant it for her, so I gave
- 8:35it to her. I called Denham to check but got no answer. What
- 8:39time was that? About five minutes from nine? You know anything about a
- 8:43wire in the closet of three twelve? A wire? A mister call her?
- 8:46Right? Don't that's all things, Maddie. I believe this wire is
- 8:50a part of the answer to this murder. Yeah, let's go up and
- 8:54have it. Hey, I came from upstairs me, said Dunham, come
- 8:56on, honey, hurry, NICKI disappeared somewhere, went down the fire escape
- 9:11and either got to the bottom or slipped into a room on the way down.
- 9:16Too bad, now, missus Deniman, suppose you tell me the whole
- 9:20story right from the beginning. Well, I got here this morning just before
- 9:24nine o'clock. The click said Roger had engaged this room for me, so
- 9:26I came up. I was too tired to unpack, so I just lay
- 9:30down on a bed for a few minutes. I didn't sleep because I had
- 9:33a queer feeling someone was watching me. Then, about fifteen minutes ago,
- 9:37I got up, washed and started down to get some breakfast. After I'd
- 9:41gone a few steps, I thought I'd forgotten my lipstick, so I came
- 9:43back for it and I opened the door. I saw a man in the
- 9:48room, just starting to climb out the window. I screamed, and he
- 9:52disappeared. Did you got a good look at him? No? I didn't.
- 9:54But he looked like a large man with big hands. I saw those,
- 9:58says Denim, hunters have happened. You were arrived here just this time.
- 10:01Way. I got an anonymous letter yesterday. Here it is thank you.
- 10:05Your husband has been out of the army for six weeks. He's staying
- 10:09here at the Royal Arms, pretends he's not married and is making big play
- 10:11for daughter ahead of Buckley Corporation and closers. Ticket from your town here,
- 10:16that'll come if you want to avoid trouble and the letter l on. They
- 10:22have prints, same type notes. What was that, mister Carter? Oh,
- 10:26well, nothing, go on with your story please. I didn't even
- 10:30know Roger was out of the army. The last I heard was two months
- 10:33ago when you wrote that he and his buddy Johnny Casper. Johnny Casper again,
- 10:37Yes, go ahead, Missus Denham. He said they were getting out
- 10:41any minute, and you let me know as soon as they did. But
- 10:45when this letter came, I thought, I, yes, I know,
- 10:48and that's all. Well, yes, I think. So. Do you
- 10:50mind if I have a look in your closet my closet one, No,
- 10:52not at all, as suddainly is, I'd take uphone machine. But there's
- 11:00the wire that comes up from Dan's face. He says what I rather expected.
- 11:03Maddy Denham was making a record of an interview we had with someone.
- 11:07But the record is gone. That's what the guy, Missus Denham saw was
- 11:09after Maybe he got it, Nick, this is Denham. How long were
- 11:13you out of his room? Just a few seconds, No longer. I
- 11:16went out and then came back almost at one. Then the man didn't get
- 11:18it. Maddie wouldn't have had time, but someone got it. That's the
- 11:22clue you ought to have, Nick, I bet it would tell the whole
- 11:24story, as there must have been something pretty incriminating at it to make him
- 11:28kill Denham. Did you say killed Denham? Oh no, I'm sorry,
- 11:33Missus Denham. I didn't realize you heard me. I'm very sorry, but
- 11:37it's true. Your husband was killed about an hour ago. Maddy. This
- 11:43machine the headquarters. See if the Red Prince Andrew Hill get Missus Denham's two
- 11:48destines, Nick, don't better take no chances. I've me got the serial
- 11:52number on the machine, so I can have Matcy check on it, and
- 11:54I'll be on my way. Get on your way away, nickuld see Johnny
- 11:56Casper. He looks like a good starting poet, you see, mister Carter.
- 12:09We were buddies in the service. I liked Roger, so when we
- 12:13got out I brought him back here with me. He'd been a contractor in
- 12:18a small town about one hundred miles north of here, and I thought perhaps
- 12:20we could go in business together. I'm a contractor too, you know,
- 12:24No I didn't. Oh, yes, I've done some pretty big things for
- 12:28young fellow. Well, anyway, I introduced Roger to mister Allen, the
- 12:33chairman of the board of the Buckley Corporation, and to Buckley himself. Then
- 12:37I took him up to Wallam's house one night. She's Buckley's daughter I was
- 12:43engaged to at the time. While I introduced him to her, what I
- 12:48heel? That guy turned out to be that's how do you mean? Gasper?
- 12:52Well, instead of bidding on the Buckley building with me as partners,
- 12:56he submitted a separate bit of his own, and he entertained Allen and never
- 13:00remember the board at parties, and he made a big play for my girl
- 13:03behind my back night for me every way he could. My pal. You
- 13:09say you were engaged to miss Buckley. You're not now, oh, I'll
- 13:13say not. Two days ago when I called her to make a date,
- 13:16she told me we were threw She was now engaged to Denham. So you
- 13:20have little reason to like denhim. I've never hated anybody in my life,
- 13:24the way I hated that man. Where were you this morning? About eight
- 13:28o'clock this morning? My why I was right here dead? Are sure you
- 13:33wander the Royal Arms talking to Denham? What in Heaven's name makes you answer
- 13:39my question? Casper? Were you at the Royal Arms? I know?
- 13:41I well, yes, I was too. Why should I deny it?
- 13:46I went down to tell Roger to lay off my girl. I'd tell his
- 13:48wife what was going on? And what did he say to that? He
- 13:50told me to go as far as I liked. He was on top and
- 13:52he was going to stay there in spite of the devil and me. You
- 13:54two have a fight with words, yes, but that's all. That's so
- 13:58mad. I left him and came back here to think. I see you
- 14:01have a typewriter, you min if I tried? Way? No thanks you
- 14:11Who wrote those anonymous letters to Buckley and a missus Denham? Yes I did.
- 14:15I'm not ashamed of doing it. I hated Denham enough to kill him,
- 14:18yes, but I didn't. I saw too much killing in the war.
- 14:24It's funny, isn't it. I bring my buddy back here to help
- 14:26him out, and he cheats me out of everything. I want underfits me
- 14:30on the Buckley job and even steals my girl. What a laugh. No,
- 14:35I didn't kill him, but I wish I had long ago I need,
- 14:48but I was referred to you, and then I'm glad you were.
- 14:52We don't get many in here like you, baby. I want to find
- 14:54out something about it. I'm the boy that can tell your baby anything you
- 14:58want to know. I have here this serial numbers, no book, Let's
- 15:01not talk about numbers. Let's talk about you. You're the number I'm in
- 15:07right now. Well, look, will you please listen? My listening to
- 15:11every word you say? Gorgeous, go ahead and talk. I want to
- 15:15find out about digital machine number two for eight seven four nine A y?
- 15:18Hey? Look, what are you doing Tonight's like chick working number two four
- 15:24eight seven four nine A y please? I bet you do? I mean
- 15:26rumba. How's about giving me a world tonight? Oh look, I want
- 15:31to find out about this. Well, baby, I'm trying to find out
- 15:33too. How lad are you working tonight? Huh? I don't know.
- 15:39I bet you're not working at all, just stalling me along to see how
- 15:43far I'll go. Well, I'll go a long way for you. Good
- 15:46looking. Oh will you please listen? Riv? How's about letting me call
- 15:50you when I get through the night together? Come on? What do you
- 15:56say? All right? Do win call me a Pennsylvania sixty eight six oh
- 16:02one as the texture had a baby. Now you're cooking on all four?
- 16:07Now what do you want to know? Play business? Sine two four eight

- 16:14leave me look two four eight seven four nine A wys at least to a
- 16:23guy named Roger Denham yesterday afternoon. Not back yet? That makes you happy?
- 16:27Baby? You're heading the inclination to us. Thank you? Hey,
- 16:30you can't go like this. It's almost my launchwer, how's about putting on
- 16:36a pair of bibs together? Down to my place? You've got my phone
- 16:38number and my name and that's all you're going to get from me. Goodbye.
- 16:42Oh don't be like that gorgeous vaga floor. Oh there are you?
- 16:55Why, Patsy? I'm waiting for you to find anything? Nick? Do
- 16:57I look fascinating to you? Hey, Patsy, this is police headquarters.
- 17:03Remember, other men find me irresistible? Do you snap out of it?
- 17:07Patsy? Did you find out about the dictaphone. Huh oh, yes,
- 17:11at least Roger Dennon yesterday afternoon for forty eight hours. That checks, matty.
- 17:15Huh. He expected a visitor and one of the interview recorded. I
- 17:19wish I knew what was on that record. All I was starting to tell
- 17:22you when Patsy came in. Nick, there were two sets of fingerprints on
- 17:26that dictaphone, denhim's and somebody else's. The others don't check with any we
- 17:30gut they must be the murderers. When he got the record by the extra
- 17:33large Hey, they aren't Nick, They're small, so they couldn't have been
- 17:38his. Maybe they don't mean anything could have been on the machine. Ron
- 17:41Denham got it. Oh wala, how'd you make out? You asked me
- 17:47to find out about that there piece of silk? Out? Didn't you?
- 17:49I did well when you give or did I? McGlenn the job? He
- 17:53does it? He is, sir, And I had some job too,
- 17:56believe me, but I came through love of Michelaw stop talking and say something.
- 18:02I'm trying to, but to keep interrupting me. Waldo, what did
- 18:04you find? The silk was woven by the seasoned meals. Now they made
- 18:10up about a dozen shirts out of it, and then they discovered there was
- 18:11a fly in this stuck, so they chunked the rest and they sold them
- 18:15shirts to the Lionel Men's shop right here in town. Did you go there?
- 18:19No, I didn't. I thought maybe you would like to do some
- 18:22of the detecting yourself. Okay, okay, that's my next visit the Lionel
- 18:26Men's shop. Come on, Patsy, come on, this is Buckley speaking.
- 18:37This isn't it card? Mister Buckley, I find that you bought a
- 18:41dozen of white silk shirts from the Lionel shop a few months ago. Yes,
- 18:45I did. They offered me a special price. I recall, why
- 18:48did you keep them all yourself? Why no, I didn't. I got
- 18:52them just before Christmas, and I gave several of them away his presents.
- 18:55Could you tell me to whom you gave them? Well, let me see.
- 18:59I remember giving Allen three of them, and I kept five for myself,
- 19:03I think, and the others. Oh, yes, yes, my
- 19:07daughter Olim gave the rest to Johnny Casper so he'd have some when he got
- 19:10out of the army. They were going around together at that time. Nobody
- 19:12else got any I believe not. I can't swear it, of course.
- 19:15All right, thanks, sorry to bother you, goodbye, Nick. He
- 19:19kept some game Sam Dwellen and some to Casper. Casper coming back to him,
- 19:23don't we shame? So he certainly got a motive. But if he
- 19:27did it, where does the dictophone come in? Yes? I see what
- 19:32you mean. Who else is there? Alan? I suppose a better check
- 19:37on his whereabouts at the time of the killing this morning. Mustn't leave any
- 19:38stone unturned. Come on, no, mister Allen, isn't the home just
- 19:51now, mister Carter, can I do anything for you? Perhaps? What
- 19:53time did mister Allen get up this morning? At his usual hour? Sir?
- 19:57About nine thirty? Are you sure? Oh? Absolutely, sir.
- 20:00He came downstairs in his pajamas and dressing gown to ask me about a suit
- 20:04he couldn't find. It was at the cleaner. What time were you up
- 20:08this morning? I start work at eight o'clock regularly, sir. It's my
- 20:11heaby and you didn't see mister Ellen until nine? Very Why no, sir?
- 20:15May I why you're asking all these questions? You may, but I'm
- 20:19not going to answer just now? Thank you, Yes, sir, thank
- 20:22you, sir. Come on, Passy, let's try something else. Maybe
- 20:25I'll have more luck there. Well, Nick, you're going to check up
- 20:37on mister Buckley. Buckley, Yes, you've investigated two of the three men
- 20:41who got the silk shirts. You can't omit, Buckley, can you?
- 20:44I suppose you're right, Patsy, we can't afford to. Oh. I
- 20:48wish I had that record than I made. I would probably tell us the
- 20:52motive. Just now we are completely missing a motive. Well, Casper had
- 20:55one, but as you've said, that doesn't account for the record. Oh
- 21:00doesn't I wonder? Huh what is it? Nick? Wait? I want
- 21:04to call Maddie Wearing the Drug Show here, Okay, I'll be right back.
- 21:10All right, I'm aside Sergeant Madison Eddie. Nick, tell me,
- 21:29when you examined the Prince and the dictaphone, did you find any of the
- 21:32smaller prints lapping over Denham's prints? Why? Come to think of it again,
- 21:37Nick, some of the little prints were on top of Dunhams. What.
- 21:40Thanks, I'll see you later. Bye. What's going on? Nick?
- 21:45I think I know now where the missing dictaphone record is, Patsy.
- 21:48And when I get that, I should have the motive and the murderer.
- 21:49Let's go Nick, oh, Nick's for goodness sake, what did Jazz to
- 22:03speak to the chambermaid? Because I think she has the answer. What answer
- 22:07could she have? You'll see you're the chamber maid who found mister Denim's body
- 22:15this morning in room three twelve. Yit, I found him when I went
- 22:18in to clean the room. Did you go to room four twelve this morning?
- 22:21Well? I did, and I didn't, that's what do you mean?
- 22:22Well, you see, I cleaned the rooms that's faked in the afternoon.
- 22:26The deadline's five o'clock, so I got to get them cleaned before then.
- 22:29So I cleaned up four twelve yesterday like always. That's a tree ancient
- 22:33room. So this morning I opened four twelve to see if somebody's been in.
- 22:37But when I seen it, like I left it, I didn't go
- 22:38in. I see you went to the room at all this morning, Like
- 22:41I told you, I just looked in and see nobody's been in, so
- 22:45I locked it up again. You won't mind letting me take your fingerprints?
- 22:48Finger prints? What do you want them for? Yes, for the record,
- 22:52you're not scared. Are you scared? Why should I be scared,
- 22:56and you won't mind if I take your prince. No, I don't guess,
- 23:00So how do you do it? Just press your fingers on this little
- 23:04ink pad like this, Yeah, and pressed them on this pad like this.
- 23:11Yeah. The match, nick match match? What so you didn't go
- 23:17in room for twelve this month? I told you. I I know what
- 23:19you told. Men, I'll tell me the truth. You went to the
- 23:22door and you went in and you took a record off a tic theophone machine
- 23:25you found on the closet. Why going, mister, can you tell all
- 23:27that from my fingerprints? I can, so you better tell me the truth.
- 23:32All right, Well, here's what happened in this the Gospel Truth.
- 23:34I opened the door, like I said. Then just as I started to
- 23:37close it again, I heard a funny noise. I listened, and it
- 23:41comes from the closet. I looked and there was a funny machine there with
- 23:45one of them tricked kind of records on it, and you took it.
- 23:48Yeah. I didn't think it with steel, and I just wanted to see
- 23:51what was on it. So I had brought it down here and when I
- 23:53got a chance, I was going to play it on one of the machines
- 23:56in the office, but I've been too busy. Do you know that Denim
- 23:59was killed for that record? And if the murderer finds you've got it,
- 24:02now you're next. Ye. I wouldn't like that. I don't want to
- 24:04be killed. And you better get me the record right now. Sure,
- 24:08sure, mister, I got to hit in one of the cleaning closets.
- 24:12I'll get it for your honest you wait right here, We'll wait and then
- 24:17we'll play the record. Patsy, I've got to know what's on it.
- 24:30Bley Negg. Sorry to be late, Mitter Carter, but I got held
- 24:33up in traffic. It's quite all right, mister Buckley. Now that you're
- 24:37all here, Buckley, Allan Casper, and Sergeant Mathison, I'll tell you
- 24:41why I called you together. As you know, Roger Denham was murdered this
- 24:45morning in his hotel room, strangled. The only real clues we had were
- 24:48the prints of an unusually large hand on Denhim's throat and a silk shirt pocket
- 24:53evidently torn off during the struggle. We traced the shirts and found that each
- 24:59of you three men had one or more of those shirts. Casper has no
- 25:03alibi for the time of the killing Allen, According to his butler, has
- 25:07and Buckley, we don't know about If you'd ask me, I could have
- 25:11told you where I was. I'm sure you could, mister Buckley, right
- 25:12to the very minute, no doubt. So any one of you might have
- 25:17owned the shirt with the torn pocket. We had to get at it another
- 25:21way. Motive. Which of you had the strongest motive to kill Denim?
- 25:26Buckley and Ellen don't seem to have any reason, but Casper did. Now
- 25:30look here, Carter, are you trying to pin this on me? Set
- 25:32down, Casper and wait until I finish. I won't pin murder on anyone
- 25:36unless it belongs there. As I said, we needed a motive, but
- 25:41it was only late this afternoon. That chance, plus the rational and logical
- 25:44elimination of other possibilities, gave me the answer. I now have the motive,
- 25:48and with it the murderer. And what is it? Mister Carter?
- 25:52Yes, don't keep his waiting this way? Here it is Listen all right,
- 25:56Bessy, Hello, Wellen? What brings you out so early in the
- 26:06morning? I think you know, Dennim he stepped that machine. Give me
- 26:08that record. What's the trouble? Mister Allen? Stop that machine. You
- 26:11think that record? Now, I want thee gentlemen to hear what it says.
- 26:15Your up with a bullet. Put a bullet nowhere, mother, give
- 26:19me that. All right, gentlemen, Now that mister Allen is quiet again,
- 26:27i'd like you to hear the rest of this record. Got it again,
- 26:30Betsy? All right? Hello? Wellen? What brings you out so
- 26:37early in the morning? I think you know, DENNI don't matter who money,
- 26:41money, what money? Why o you son? Hey? What is
- 26:45this You're trying to kid me? No? No, indeed, I just
- 26:48don't understand. You've been on the contract for the construction of a new Buckleet
- 26:53building. Remember that's right. You're not the lowe b there and came in
- 26:59second. You're over fifty thousand dollars higher than the low bid. Right again,
- 27:03I reported to the board that I was convinced that the low bid it
- 27:07was not a CIPP to do this job and recommend it giving it to you
- 27:11in spite of your price. That's very decent. Ver you well decent.
- 27:15You'll promise me ten thousand dollars if I got you that contract. That's why
- 27:19I am here. I want half of that ten thousand dollars now before the
- 27:22contract is signed. Hey, Allan, and I never promised to pay you
- 27:26to give me that contract. I don't do business that way. Why you
- 27:30double crossing gip artist? You'll think me what you've promised you that contract,
- 27:34they'll never be signed. I promise you about the board of water to me,
- 27:37I'm my recommendation and never wanted to someone else. If I don't get
- 27:41what's coming to me, I boss that board and don't forget. They do
- 27:45what I say, and you're going to do what you say you want or
- 27:48else. That's the end. That's the most incredible thing I ever heard.
- 27:53So well, and you, Alan, would you got to tell us what
- 27:56happened after the record was shut off? Nothing left at once. May I
- 28:00see your shirt? No? Yes, open your pastor that's a good boy.
- 28:07Becky hasn't changed his shirt. His pocket's missing. I probably didn't even
- 28:11know what was gone on all the excitement of the murder. And if further
- 28:15proof is needed, I believe his hands will correspond to the marks on Denham's
- 28:18throat. I see you have unusually large hands, mister Allen, and Denham
- 28:22was a louse. He set the machine off and told me he'd been making
- 28:26a record of our conversation, said if I tried to collect what he'd promised
- 28:29me, take the record to Buckley. I knew that would ruin me,
- 28:33and so I killed him till you could find the record, till you could
- 28:34destroy it. I wouldn't have believed it possible. While you're right about one
- 28:40thing, You're through finished as far as I'm concerned, and as far as
- 28:42the state is concerned too. The chair will finish him. That's the case,
- 28:47gentlemen. Oh that's for me, Ni were you Patsy? Who is
- 28:51it? You know? I'll say, I do wait till he here's what
- 28:55I'm going to tell him. Oh, but I do wish somebody else would
- 28:59talk to me that way, just once in a while. Hello, Well,
- 29:12Nick, isn't it about time for you to give us a glimpse into
- 29:15next week's story? Why I shouldn't be surprised if you were right? Ken?
- 29:18Well, I suppose you take over then, right? The ingredients of
- 29:22my story next week. First, a man who died of heart failure,
- 29:26but who was really murdered. A will which was the will the old man
- 29:30wrote, which proved to be not the will he wrote and a signature which
- 29:33was forced by a person who wanted it known it had been for sounds like
- 29:37a fine collection of contradictions to me, what do you call it, Nick?
- 29:41I call it the Case of the Clumsy Forgeries. Nick Caught Her Master
- 29:52Detective, which is produced and directed by Jack McGregor, is copyrighted by Street
- 29:56and Smith Publications Incorporated. Pictured stories of Nick Carter appear in every issue of
- 30:03the Shadow Comics. In the broadcasts of Nick Cotter Master Detective, Ron Clark
- 30:07has starred as Nick. Charlotte Manson is featured as Patsy. Matty is played
- 30:11by Ed Latimer, Waldo by Humphrey Davis. Original music is played by George
- 30:17Wright. Script is by Jack McGregor and Peggy Mayer. Any resemblance in these
- 30:22programs to actual persons, living or dead, or to actual places is purely
- 30:26coincidental. Nick Carter Master Detective is presented over most of these mutual stations each
- 30:33week at this same time. This is Ken Paul saying, so long until
- 30:38next week. This program was heard in Canada through the facilities of the Canadian
- 30:48Broadcasting Corporation. Welcome Back, Will a suitably complex Nick Carter case nicely done,
- 30:59and we're going to who turned to some listener comments and feedback before we
- 31:03get into an announcement here at the end of the show, and we have
- 31:07a comment first of all from Brian McGlenn, who writes, I was listening
- 31:15to the Nick Carter episode with the two old ladies and a payroll robbery.
- 31:19It was the first time I heard the sidekick Waldo's full name. I had
- 31:25to rewind a few times that even looked it up on the Internet. What
- 31:27a joy to hear my own name on the radio. It's not a very
- 31:32popular name over here. Both my parents came here from Ireland. I always
- 31:36enjoyed the Nick Carter episodes, and now I like them even more. Well,
- 31:40thanks so much, Brian. I'm glad you enjoy it, and we
- 31:42aim to please particularly longtime friends of the program. Aloma says that one of
- 31:49the best. And then we also received a email from a listener. Pretty
- 31:56simple email here. Hello from Oklahoma, says Meredith. Thanks so much for
- 32:08your commic. Meredith. Now those announcements, you're going to have a couple
- 32:14opportunities to meet me in person. I will well, if you're in the
- 32:20Treasure Valley area, I'll be at the Tree City Comic Con in Boise on
- 32:24October the seventeenth. Also on October the twenty third, I'll be at the
- 32:30Ontario Community Library open House in Ontario, Oregon from six to eight o'clock.
- 32:37And that's in far eastern Oregon. And I was glad I called ahead because
- 32:42I think of Oregon as being on Pacific time, but it's actually in that
- 32:45little portion of Oregon that's in the Mountain time zone. So Tree City Comic
- 32:51Con on October eighth, seventeenth and Ontario Community Library on October twenty third.
- 32:58All right, well, that will do it for today. We will be
- 33:00back tomorrow with yours truly Johnny Dowler, and join us back here next Thursday
- 33:07for another episode of Nick Carter. In the meantime, send your comments to
