- 0:37[SPEAKER_02]: How is Mrs. H enjoying the current thunder happenings?
- 0:41[SPEAKER_02]: I have to imagine that she has very, very few complaints.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_02]: outside of uh, John, I need you to move over to the catch so I can watch this thing happen.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_00]: It was seven nothing last night and she's like, well, shoot.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to get right out of the gym.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: I believe it's seven.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's okay, Holly.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: It'll be all right.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_02]: I, hey, I appreciate, I get together with one of the more anxious basketball watchers I've ever seen, Oklahoma fans might know the great Jesse crittoned in our good friend is like a very measured, excellent work girl, that stuff.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_02]: You take his journalism everything off.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_02]: You take him to a Thunder game and Jesse's freaking out.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_02]: He is,
- 1:25[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to be okay.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_02]: It will be okay.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_02]: I hope that everyone has that.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_02]: Check in.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_02]: It's playoff time.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_02]: Check in on your anxious viewer that you have in the fan.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_02]: God I'm in Carson Field who's been, uh, nose to the ground.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely grinding.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_02]: We'll talk about his big story.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_02]: He dropped here in a bit.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_02]: But Carson, how are we doing?
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: Doing good.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_01]: I'm more of a playoff.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_01]: Anxious playoff watcher for hockey right now.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_01]: Buffalo savers in the mix in the eastern conference.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_01]: Anxious about
- 1:54[SPEAKER_02]: Buffalo's been an awesome story.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_02]: You just talk about the then in the jets have been the major American sport droughts.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_02]: Buffalo comes in.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_02]: I will always appreciate the man on roller blades with the was it the fighting dummy with the Bruins?
- 2:11[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, good vibes.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_02]: I wish nothing but the best for the people of Buffalo.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_02]: Mr. Aber, are we going to have to like trigger warning because the hockey players have been brought up?
- 2:21[SPEAKER_02]: Are we okay?
- 2:22[SPEAKER_02]: Are we feeling okay?
- 2:25[SPEAKER_03]: Well, uh, first of all, anytime you lose to the flyers, it is not a good thing, especially in the playoffs, but, uh, some good fight from the pins, and at this point, I'll just sit back and enjoy the rest of the playoffs, although sorry Carson, uh, I love 80 in teams, so go to Montreal, in that series.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_03]: More importantly, for me, though, the sad pandas won their playoff game on Sunday, 6-1, including a couple of goals from some guy named Abers, so it was a good weekend.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_02]: I just your brother is electric.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_02]: I really love it every time we say, oh, no, that was you.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_02]: We're talking about you.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_02]: Well, very, very good.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_02]: And the other thing is that you that I've been to Abers House.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_02]: He has a large, large, large flagpole in the medium of the backyard, so no one can say the HOA can't say anything about it.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_02]: And he's been just flying W's from that thing left right in center.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm sure that he is.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_02]: A, okay.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_02]: We're about to get into the summer.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_02]: That's how we know when Major League Baseball's heating up, NBA playoffs, heating up, we're watching a softball team head out to the SEC Tournament and baseball really getting to that final push for seeding at the SEC Tournament region, all that stuff.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_02]: You know that it is a fun time here.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_02]: It's also an interesting time of your boys, because the football counter slows down.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_02]: Like like the NFL college football has become a
- 3:53[SPEAKER_02]: that football takes a small breath.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of right now.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_02]: That's why you see all the coaches conferences and the coaches conventions.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_02]: It's why right now is the perfect time for sprint venables and Roger Denny in the whole Oklahoma at Lake Farmer to hit the road as they begin their caravan here on Wednesday, zoom in all across the state and dip it into Dallas things like that.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_02]: It's also a great time to
- 4:13[SPEAKER_02]: maybe take a peek forward and look at what Oklahoma has in this 2027 class, and obviously everyone knows if you follow the suitors, if you found this podcast, you know that they're rocking and rolling in 2027, but one of the more interesting stories in every class, always going to be the quarterback, but it really feels like in this specific class, it's a just
- 4:34[SPEAKER_02]: Fascinating, fascinating story and how you get a guy that's had the backup somebody else who is a big time QB So you're not going oh my gosh, what's happening, but James Roberts has had to be patient He's had to find his way, but his recruitment blew up Oklahoma a team that identified a coach staff that wanted him as well And obviously he has verbally committed and is hurdling toward you would hope everything being fine Sign on the papers later on a long time from now, but of course you caught up with Mr. Robert to cut up with his coach things like that
- 5:04[SPEAKER_02]: A great read, by the way, on the website, OkumaSuitarsonSI.com.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_02]: Just hit the football tab, it's right there.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_02]: Head to our social media, it'll be pinned to the top of everything, all that fun stuff.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_02]: But once you learn and how excited are you to kind of continue to follow the path of Roberts throughout his senior season and into Oklahoma.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a really impressive story and just really impressive for a kid to sit behind KJ Lacy, who's now a quarterback at Texas actually was a really big prospect in his own right.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of kids and you can't really blame him, would want to transfer schools, maybe get disgruntled by being a backup quarterback despite having as much talent and athleticism as he did.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: But according to his coach, Jeff Kelly, who's actually a former D1 quarterback.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_01]: briefly played for the Seattle Seahawks.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: He was like, this guy is going to be our guy at some point soon.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: He knows this is his job to lose in the future.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: Finally, he gets his opportunity in the fall and he was fantastic.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_01]: Something like 57 total touchdowns, dual threat kind of guy.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: Let's Sarah Lan to a 13-in-one record.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_01]: You look at this guy and the offer started to trickle in midway through the 2025 ball.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_01]: He got his first SEC offer from Auburn, OU followed Sue about a month later, and it's one of those things that, OU kind of got ahead of the curve offering him because I think he was, he was either unranked or a low end 30 star by the time that he got his OU offer.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_01]: He was not some can't miss prospects.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_01]: Now you look at his profile.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: He's committed to OU, but he also has offers from Georgia, Florida,
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: so many big programs in a four-star recruit according to the two four-seven composite rankings.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_01]: So it's one of those things that you just look at the evaluation piece from Jim Nackie.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: It just seems like another Jim that he found before a lot of other big programs did.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: Carson one thing that I like about your story you really went into detail about his James and Robert's visits.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_00]: He came for a game and then Brent Vanillable showed up, I guess, our buckle showed up first at his school and then offensive court night or the head coach and defensive court nighter.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: Show up a couple of weeks, couple days later and then pretty soon he finds himself at the future freaks and that was the moment that he decided he wanted to become a senator.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, that's a really cool deal.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_01]: And it shows how persistent that the sooner is we're in getting him to be a part of this 2020 class that Ryan mentioned is so good, 20 commits.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_01]: Rank number one by two, four, seven sports.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: And he said that was huge for him.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_01]: He liked the relationship he built with Coach Ben Arbuckle, Brent Vinnable, some of the other guys, Jim Naggi, too, he mentioned,
- 7:45[SPEAKER_01]: It just seems like they were so intentional throughout the process, even though it was a November to March turn around from offered a commitment.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_01]: He really underscored how big their intentionality was.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_00]: When he committed, that was at the future freaks.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: But you guys committed right behind him right they all got together and they had a great camp They had a great weekend.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: Can you kind of describe what you learned about that?
- 8:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he said that was one of the coolest things because he he came in thinking he was gonna commit Just kind of wanted to get there make sure that was what he was feeling He does it and then four other guys on the same day follow suit.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_01]: I believe great on how the broken vocal home athlete I believe he was one day after but just kind of a commit after commit thing
- 8:31[SPEAKER_01]: And Robert's just kind of led the way of what she said was just really cool.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_00]: When a coaching staff goes all in on a guy and a general manager obviously, the Jim Maggie.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_00]: When they go all in on the guy, it's...
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: full court press.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_00]: Let's send the offensive coordinator.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_00]: Let's send the head coach and the defensive coordinator.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: Let's have him on campus.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_00]: Let's have him for a game.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: Let's have him on our special camp that we do for future freeze.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: What was it specifically about James and Roberts that they like so much that they're putting all the chips on this kid?
- 9:06[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it just seems like like I said, he's the ultimate athlete, but the ultimate leader to kind of what I touched on a minute ago.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's easy for kids, and maybe not the wrong decision to transfer schools.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: You're not getting that immediate ability to develop on the field, but learning under a guy like...
- 9:23[SPEAKER_01]: Cajay Lacy, then becoming the starter and being similarly dominant as Lacy was, it just seems like he has that maturity that a lot of these 16, 17 year old kids don't have.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_01]: And that's exactly what his coach told me, this guy is going to be successful in college because he is such a good leader already.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_01]: The athleticism is there and the leadership is too.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_01]: So many kids have the athleticism piece, the talent piece,
- 9:47[SPEAKER_01]: But it really is important for someone as young as him to already have the maturity needed to be good at the next level.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_02]: It sounds like it's like a kind of a through line with, we know for any of these guys to be considered to be a quarterback to Oklahoma.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_02]: You've got arm talent, you've got all this stuff.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of more about the intangible stuff and putting that together.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_02]: I was just really impressed all throughout the spring talking to Beau Bentley.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_02]: It's one thing to hear.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, this kid's got a fantastic head on his shoulders.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, we know he's got all the talent in the world.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_02]: It's nothing to, you know, how many times did we kind of check in with him and whether it's his kind of measured approach going into spring ball of I'm excited to go out and compete.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_02]: But I really understand that this is about being a sponge.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_02]: So can things up trying to get acclimated to how fast his Oklahoma defense is because you know, that's the size and speed you see throughout the SEC.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_02]: I have no doubt that that's going to be something that it just feels like
- 10:43[SPEAKER_02]: When you hear about the way that Robert just talked about it, it lines up a lot with Bobo.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_02]: But I know that for fans, if you only got to see him at the spring game, it wasn't the best day as far as production goes.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_02]: We've kind of talked about that.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_02]: I think that all the, all the Bobo, Bentley story has been written about, hey, it wasn't great.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, but we all know it was, he's willing with the twos, a depleted twos, all that stuff, and that they believe it's going to be huge for growth.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_02]: I'm excited to see this class.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_02]: You continue to do,
- 11:10[SPEAKER_02]: Evolve maybe, I don't know if that's the right word, just because a lot of the hay is in the barn, it feels like at this point, it's kind of just a, hey, keep everything together, which is always a thing for any class at Oklahoma and Britt Venables has been really, really good at that for the most part under what I would consider normal recruiting circumstances, and then it's just going to kind of be about.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_02]: that the one big spot, the big mover has kind of been as dealing with Kola has come in.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_02]: You've seen whether it be 27 or 28 that has been where maybe the wheel has kind of spun a little bit, but it's also as a spot where that's understandable.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_02]: We know that whatever you feel about Demarco Murray sitting listed this whether it be love him, man happy whatever.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_02]: No one could deny that the really should be had with the kids every time a new running back step down a campus It's almost like that.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's remarkable freaking Murray that that's who my running back coach is going to be and so it feels like that's just the next step is seeing how deal in the call it gets after and as we talked about last week You don't have to go very far.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_02]: Just watch the first if you're ever worried about how does deal in a call again or a crew I think cars have you just put on the first shot of last year the NFL draft the 26th draft you'll be okay
- 12:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think that's a safe play show them Jeremiah love to dairy and price.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, that's that's only one year of my developing of running backs.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_01]: You go back to us to at USC in the anniversary worked with Tevin Coleman despite that team not being very good.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_01]: Tevin Coleman of course was a great back for them.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: You take that back to us in a fellow experience getting one year with Ashton, Gen T.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_01]: I think they're gonna be okay running back wise or starting to offer more running backs from the 27 class you saw Jackson Stokes decimate last week, they're gonna fill that whole one way or another.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously you hate to see anybody leave your class, but it is a California kid commits to Cal, not the most surprising thing in the world was recruited of course by the Marco Murray.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_01]: So that's not anything that I don't that I think owe you fanship panic about.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_02]: Brian, have you been, maybe it surprises not the right word, but I use that word evolution.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_02]: We've covered this thing from the very, very beginning of the Vinibles era, and I remember you and I often sitting together during the marathon spring press conferences that first spring, I would like to note, I think I was the first person around, you're like, he's kind of long-winded.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_02]: But when he was doing all of the, not just the soul mission, but laying out,
- 13:30[SPEAKER_02]: his vision, britmentables for recruiting, things like that, and then how the first couple of classes came together.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_02]: I think that everybody kind of anticipated that Oklahoma would just start to be a program where there are some programs that go out way or really Ohio State feels like they're always leading the way, making you big splash, linking Riley's USC and this is what Lincoln likes to do at Oklahoma too.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_02]: They'd rather have everyone in the boat verbally in February and try to hold on for dear life toward the end as opposed to kind of be patient, wait, slow play it,
- 13:58[SPEAKER_02]: That's kind of how venibles and crews started, and as they got built up a little bit, you'd see that process get earlier and earlier, as they kind of built those relationships.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_02]: But I had maybe anticipated, certainly in 26 classes, we do with the front office coming in.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_02]: That was going to be a little bit of a reset, just because they were coming in so late.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_02]: I've been a little surprised with how quickly it's all felt like it's come together.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_02]: Whether it be the collaboration between Jim Nagi, all those guys and the coaches and how quickly this bulk of the 27 classes been like we were and we're ready to go away It's been at one of the classes in the country that has come together earlier compared to everybody else
- 14:34[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, it's gonna be interesting to see how it plays out between here and signing day, but I think it's a function of having the front office and allowing them to do their work in the evaluations and maybe getting out ahead of a good amount of guys, where you feel like you've got a handle on what kind of players they are, so you can get those offers out earlier, get ahead of the curve,
- 15:01[SPEAKER_03]: things like that.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_03]: And then I think it's also a function of Brent Venables and, you know, some of the same stuff you talked about with Demarco Murray, the relationship building.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, one of the things that I said when Jim Nagy was hired was,
- 15:17[SPEAKER_03]: that this allows Brent Venables to do the two things that he is best equipped to do, which is coach football, specifically defense, and relationships, and focus on that area.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that that is a big factor, not only with Brent Venables, but with the extension of his assistant coaches in developing those relationships, making these players feel comfortable, and then
- 15:43[SPEAKER_03]: the addition of the NIL component on the other end where you're you're bolstering that where it's not hey you've got to convince these guys like they were a couple years ago hey don't take the payday now because it'll be there later if we're able to develop you now they can give them the payday now and develop them for later so I think all of those factors
- 16:12[SPEAKER_03]: They're certainly going to be schools that come for these guys as their profile continues to grow.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_02]: Good news is as much as we talk about the coming in late for Jim Nagy in the front office staff in the 206 class and all that, it's like when we go back to signing gay, Jim Nagy and just kind of smiling and going, yeah, we learned pretty quick what negative recruiting is all about, how real that is, all that stuff.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's going to be the toughest negative recruiting job you'll ever have to dig out of this.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_02]: when you enter a season with a coach that all the whispers are out of like, is it going to be there?
- 16:47[SPEAKER_02]: All that stuff.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, that all has gone by the wayside whenever you return to the college football playoff and it really feels like reset a foundation for okay.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_02]: The defense has arrived, the pieces on offense, you get healthier, you get more aggressive adding those pieces around.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_02]: I can't wait to see like what is 2028 look like?
- 17:06[SPEAKER_02]: It's Jim nagging this front office stack.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_02]: It's another year of recruiting and
- 17:10[SPEAKER_02]: Push things out one more year as far as making those of ours even earlier to see if there are more guys like a James and Robert's like some of these guys that we've seen that Oklahoma goes in offers and you go.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_02]: Well, there's not a lot of information because there's not a lot that's been out there and then suddenly you look back three months later It's like well, this player has jumped up 50 spots and then 50 spots and then 50 spots and the re-ranking some things like that So it'll be really really fast.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_02]: Daniel a cool thing to continue to follow if you're big in tune tapped in you saw here in the last
- 17:43[SPEAKER_02]: let's go 72ish hours and that'll cover probably with most people who listen to this Oklahoma's got an after it again on the recruiting channel as far as evaluations and offers go Carson on Monday so the days are ready to get a Monday they issued two additional offers for quarterbacks in the 2028 class.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yes they did they offer trade tagly a ferry hope I'm pronouncing that name right quarterback from New Jersey and then Brady Quinn.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_01]: quarterback from Florida, no relation to the former Notre Dame slash Cleveland Browns, quarterback Brady Quinn, but both players are, they're actually neither of them are consensus for or three stars rated as a four star by one outlet three star by the other, but both look to have a lot of harm talent, put up good stats.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_01]: I know that Quinn, for example, he will now be playing at his third high school in as many years in the fall.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_01]: Just from what it looks like trying to get some better competition heading into his last two years of high school ball.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_01]: But now they're up to three offers for quarterbacks in the 2028 cycle.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_01]: They have course offered Graham Simpson last May.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_01]: He's the younger brother of Tyson, but judging off the fact he hasn't taken any unofficial visits to owe you or anything like that.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_01]: starting to look like maybe OU isn't a runner for him, but it's going to be interesting to track what tagly a fairy and Quinn decide to do if they do come to game day visits to any sort of trips to Norman, so that's something to watch for sure.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_02]: be something to monitor over the summer.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_02]: They also get out in 2029, Logan, Lucero, from Perish Episcopal in Dallas.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_02]: Tell me if this sounds all right, as far as some QB evaluator stuff like that.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_02]: Tennessee was the early one in there.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_02]: Kentucky's been in on that as well as Arkansas Baylor, Michigan, TCU, Utah, SMU, FAU, and the most important one of all Texas state are friends floating the river down there.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_02]: So the sooner it's getting after it and as we said, that'll be, if you guys are long time listeners, subscribers, or just recruiting junkies.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_02]: You know this may, we take the half step back for the in a main into June.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_02]: That is generally when the barbecue season begins and that is when we are looking for all those big visit days.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_02]: Not only they happen in the realm of college football, though.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_02]: Not necessarily.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, go ahead, John.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_00]: Just a quick update.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_00]: Twenty twenty seven class ranks number three according to rivals number three in the nation number one in the nation according to 24 seven sports
- 20:06[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, that'll be, they are rock, it'll be, the biggest question will be, can they stay?
- 20:11[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if they'll have the number one overall, like potential when it comes to doing all their recruiting math, hand up, I'm really bad at recruiting math.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm not the person to crunch those numbers.
- 20:23[SPEAKER_02]: I was told there would be no math.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_02]: That's kind of why I'm here.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_02]: But it's like, hey, they can hang on for like a top five class, that's the spot exactly where you want.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_02]: to be as far as that goes.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_02]: I'm elsewhere stepping into the college football world at large.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_02]: Looks like we've had the coaches start to get together.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_02]: This is what I call board committee season.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_02]: All that stuff as far as, hey, we got this group together and that group together and they're putting forth this and that and all that stuff.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_02]: But the latest recommendations
- 20:58[SPEAKER_02]: earlier we kind of talked with us not a ton but they had already put forth the recommendation that they would like to adjust the college football calendar starting in 2027 and beyond.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_02]: What is currently known as week zero, they'd like to slide the season up and just make week zero become the new week one so we get go a little bit earlier.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_02]: has put forward, ending the College of Wildlife by mid-Jay anywhere.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's something that we would all be in favor of.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_02]: We go around the horn here in a second, but I just remember this past year.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_02]: It felt like we really had this like crescendo at the New Year's six, and I looked down and it's like we have like 800 more days after the college football season.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_02]: The last two years, that's been my biggest criticism of the 12 team playoff is that it's felt like it's taken forever to get the national title game in tandem with an
- 21:48[SPEAKER_02]: Expanded playoff, which is what the AFC A board had said that they'd like 16 or 24.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_02]: They shouldn't turn 24 got help us, but that and then Doing that and eliminating conference title games, which is something that we have already seen whether it be Kirby smart, whether it be Kaylin to board Greg Sanky's kind of weighted on this John it looks like
- 22:11[SPEAKER_02]: We've talked about it these last two years, everyone's yelled about the counter, they talked about the portal counter, but it was really, it felt like Dan Landing was maybe the first one this last go around in the CFP to be like first stop, which we had to do a lot of this weekend.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_02]: There's no freaking reason that we should be playing this game out here and there or ever.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_02]: Secondly, man, if we just started playing football and by starting, I mean, continued playing football right after the regular season, you go boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, get the season done.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_02]: behind us and then you can start the portal season.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_02]: There's no reason for coaches to leave mid-play up because they can finish the season before portal season get to the new job stuff like that.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know why this all can't happen at once because that's what would have made sense, but it looks like we are slowly steering the boat of college football at least in some of the calendar directions that make a bit more sense.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they gotta see what works, what the fans like, and what they don't like, what sucks.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_00]: And there's some things about waiting, playing one game over a span of 37 days to get to the national championship game.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_00]: That sucks.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody wants to do that.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_00]: Um, let me ask you guys this, just a show of hands if you don't mind.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_00]: Um, do you, do you love it?
- 23:25[SPEAKER_00]: Or do you hate it?
- 23:28[SPEAKER_00]: That,
- 23:29[SPEAKER_00]: we cover a team where we ask the head coach a question about the state of college football and the playoff and the structure and what he would like to see and what he thinks is best for the game and he never answers those questions.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of love it, but I kind of hate it.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_02]: I, it's just a, I don't think it, we go around, but it didn't really bother me either way, because there are sometimes where
- 23:53[SPEAKER_02]: And some coaches run into this.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_02]: Let's move out of the realm of college football and into the NBA.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe upset people last and all that said.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_02]: There are some coaches like when Steve Hurr starts to talk about the state of the league, stuff like that.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_02]: It can get a little grandstandy.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like at times.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_02]: And there would be a lot of moments that if I were covering the Warriors that like, hey, on some of the league counter stuff, you make good points on all the other stuff.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_02]: And just like,
- 24:18[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, a step coming back from runners knee like can we just like get to that at hand, but it's also a spot of with Bob Stoops.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_02]: He had achieved this status in the game and in Ryan, I know you know this where he was one of the most tinier people.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_02]: And so it was valuable.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_02]: That's why Mike gun do you use an Oklahoma state being one of the most tinier people.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_02]: It's like you've seen all of this.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_02]: Nick Sabin.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_02]: I now it's why I think Kirby smarts moving to that because he's now of this new generation of coaches, one of the most tinier people.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_02]: It's just kind of weird that Brent has been around football forever, and so I think he could walk the line if I've only been ahead coach for four years, but I have all these thoughts because I've done three plus decades in it, but I think that he just seems to, he's like, I got so much other stuff going on, just you just tell me where to play and we'll play some football.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think I would like to see him start to get a little bit more opinionated about some of these things as he, you know, moves on and gets that, you know, experience that you're talking about, I mean, I think I look at the softball side and patty gas, so when the advocacy that, you know, she has taken on for the sport for women sports period, but
- 25:28[SPEAKER_03]: specifically for softball and we've seen some of those things come to fruition.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_03]: She's, you know, didn't back down talking about the WCWS calendar a couple years ago.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_03]: There's been some other stuff that, you know, she talked about that as sort of headed in the right direction of getting fixed, the replay issue a few years ago, things like that.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_03]: So I think
- 25:54[SPEAKER_03]: I hope that as Brent Venables gets more experience, he gets more comfortable expressing his views on things because I think it is valuable for someone who's respected in the community to do that.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_03]: But I also wonder if that's just going to add 30 more minutes to every press conference that we have.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_00]: That's how long you talk.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_00]: Two things that I think about when I think about what the reason I asked that question.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_00]: We started the conversation by saying Dan Landing is shaping what is one of the guys that's shaping the opinion.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_00]: He was hired to be a head coach.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_00]: The same exact year that Brent Venables was hired to be a head coach and he's got way less experience.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_00]: He's way younger.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_00]: He's just a defensive coordinator, but the other side is Brent is so pure.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_00]: when he thinks about football, when he talks about football, it is pure, it is, is my linebackers, you know, back foot on his toes or is it flat?
- 26:50[SPEAKER_00]: Is it, is, is, is, is, left hand up or is it, is it bent at a 40 foot?
- 26:52[SPEAKER_00]: He's so, he's, so, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's
- 26:59[SPEAKER_00]: driven by details and the function of what a good linebacker supposed to play and what a good free technique looks like and how to get the next big ad russia and he's so focused on all that goes into being successful that he really honestly in his heart he doesn't care what what the structure of football is
- 27:24[SPEAKER_00]: he's he's he's one of those guys it's like hey tell me what time to be there you know I'll show I'll set the alarm I'll show up
- 27:34[SPEAKER_00]: Cut my workout short if I have to.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_00]: To be on time.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_00]: That's what Brent Venerables is.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a little bit of it That's refreshing and then there's the other side of me that's like as a reporter you want to Not stoke the fire, but you want to see what your coach has to contribute to this.
- 27:49[SPEAKER_00]: Not your coach But the coach that you cover you want to see what he has to contribute and here what his opinion is and Brett's just he does not play that game Bob always seemed to have an opinion on the really big important stuff
- 28:00[SPEAKER_00]: Brent exactly the opposite.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think, you know, I understand what you're saying who I think one, Brent Vinnables, I think has some more opinions that he's letting on about some of the stuff, you know, he just doesn't express them very much.
- 28:18[SPEAKER_03]: He stays out of the fire.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that purity that you're talking about, I think, is what makes some of his opinions valuable on these subjects, and what does a guy who is focused on, you know, the football, the development, you know, the development as people, things like that, what does that guy think about the direction that college football is moving, and I think that can be
- 28:50[SPEAKER_03]: You know, from the reporter standpoint, I want him to be very opinionated, be very clear, very loud, all those things, as long as it's to us in those press conference settings, or one-on-one, but I think it can also be very valuable for the sport if he opens up a little bit more and advocates for things that make sense for him.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_02]: especially as a college football life, right?
- 29:15[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's kind of pulled it back through.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_02]: We have a bunch of guys in their stuff, I think about when we got to sign ceiling gate and then the helmet comps, stuff like that, that's where having like a Steve Sarkesian or a genfish who are quarterback guys specifically who have worked in the pros and in college.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_02]: And I know that like, if you think about it for 10 seconds, it makes sense, but Steve Sarkesian sit down and going,
- 29:40[SPEAKER_02]: We have X number of hours a week that we can practice and I'm having to spend this block of time going over.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_02]: We have to change our signals this week because we know that Oklahoma is going to study it, right?
- 29:52[SPEAKER_02]: We know that Georgia is going to study it.
- 29:54[SPEAKER_02]: As opposed to just saying, I'm going to put this into your helmet.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_02]: Now, let me teach you about the defense and what Oklahoma is trying to do to frustrate you what Georgia is trying to do to frustrate you, which is actual growth and things like that.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_02]: And that's where I like it's valuable to have guys from all different spots.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_02]: But when you come back to something like, and this is especially what I think about immediately when I see this Carson, when you see the expansion of the cost of what play up.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_02]: Here's all that I really care about here.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_02]: I think I've kind of given up hope from a spot of like,
- 30:27[SPEAKER_02]: college athletics athletics in general money grab we get it playoffs expand everywhere they don't get smaller but when we think about it in a society in a country where no one feels like it's 100% behind anything at any point.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_02]: What is the one thing from the last two college football players?
- 30:45[SPEAKER_02]: It's not who's participating?
- 30:47[SPEAKER_02]: It's not who should have been, what seed?
- 30:50[SPEAKER_02]: It's not how should we structure stuff like that.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_02]: It's man.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_02]: Whether this game was a blowout or whether it was an absolute barn burner on site at home college football playoff games, rock.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_02]: whether Indiana's getting smoked by Notre Dame or O'You and Alabama or trading massive runs, it was incredible to be in South Bend and to be in Norman and I really, really hope I know that the bulls for a really long time and shout to the bulls for treat us well, but the bulls for a long time have taken SEC commissioners and big toe questions, not that stuff on their nice paid vacations and things like that.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_02]: I don't need to go to a bull site until honestly the national championship game.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_02]: I understand that's probably not going to happen.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_02]: I just hope that this is where all the coaches are in lockstep that, hey, instead of making our pants, our fans pay out the wazoo to travel all over the place, wouldn't it be nice?
- 31:40[SPEAKER_02]: Like I know that they're traveling all over the place, but to travel to actual college towns, and hey, maybe you yourself have a chance to have a couple of home games and Norman or wherever.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_01]: No, I totally agree with that being out there in December at Gaylord family, Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
- 31:54[SPEAKER_01]: It was special campus, it seemed like shut down obviously students were out, but it just felt like the town and shut down for a playoff game.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_01]: I heard similar things about the atmosphere's in Austin the year before our college station, the same year, South Bend as you mentioned.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_01]: There are just so many iconic venues that should be utilized by some of these top programs that don't get me wrong.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_01]: Some of these like where they play the festival in Phoenix, AT&T Stadium.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_01]: There are some great stadium, great venues, but getting them on campus at some of these iconic college football specific venues.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_01]: I think is huge for the game, huge for the universities.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you look at the money that you likely made from hosting the first round of a playoff.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_01]: Such an opportunity to reward a team for having a season as good as the hosts have had in the last few years So we will see as far as that goes you guys like, sorry.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry jumping.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_00]: I just got to get another poll here You guys like Two by weeks when they're scheduled or do you not like I think yeah, I think the players love it
- 33:03[SPEAKER_00]: I think the coaches love it.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_00]: I know the sports riders like it.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_00]: We like our by-weeks, but that's one of the things they're going to reduce when they're on the calendar sets, 14 weeks for college football plus the championship games.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to take one of those out.
- 33:17[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to have just one by week every year on like, is that for the betterment?
- 33:23[SPEAKER_00]: What do you say to better serve student athletes?
- 33:27[SPEAKER_00]: They want to better serve
- 33:34[SPEAKER_03]: So it's also remembered that this proposal, like they have no weight behind it, yes, coaches are listening to things like that, but the ASEA isn't exactly, you know, this isn't a governing body that makes rules.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_03]: They've just got to, you know, say, please sir, can you make this change for me?
- 33:55[SPEAKER_03]: So the NCAA can, you know,
- 33:58[SPEAKER_03]: and the playoff folks can smack those down if they wish and I think some of these will get smack down just for the purposes of money if nothing else.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_02]: And it also gets into as well.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_02]: And this is not new points.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_02]: It's been brought up before.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_02]: Look at the Texas high school football schedule, look at the NFL schedule, the steps on either side of college football.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_02]: And when you look at the high school schedule, I understand you're not playing SEC bodies.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_02]: Every single position, every single week.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I get it.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_02]: It's different pros.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_02]: I get it.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_02]: It's also different to a certain extent.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_02]: But
- 34:32[SPEAKER_02]: It just becomes the crunch of football is a very unique sport where we can't go every other day, right?
- 34:39[SPEAKER_02]: It can't stop basketball, it's not hockey, it's not baseball, it's not something like that.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_02]: So at some point you just got to have everything to compromise and ultimately who usually wins out the TV network.
- 34:58[SPEAKER_02]: The 10 turners of the world are at the end.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_02]: We'll see it as far as they're right.
- 35:02[SPEAKER_00]: You're right about that.
- 35:02[SPEAKER_00]: 100% think about if ESPN's sitting around going, guys, they all hate the conference football championship we can.
- 35:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we hate it.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_00]: Let's get rid of it.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_00]: TV structure, TV networks don't want it anymore.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_00]: That's 100% not what's going to happen.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_00]: The TV networks are going to say, Hell no, those things make us money.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_00]: and they make the schools money and they make the conferences money and so they're uh... i have a hard time seeing they're going to eliminate the conference championship games shrink the season down by removing um... open dates i do like the army and anything though where they're saying okay we're not going to touch this day unless we have to and then we're not going to touch that kickoff time
- 35:44[SPEAKER_00]: what they're trying to do what they're trying to avoid I guess I don't know the coaches don't see this from a big business since but it's you mentioned it right NFL playoffs if you expand to twenty four teams all of a sudden you're bleeding into the NFL playoffs guess who's going to lose that battle college every time you're already seeing that with current platform at and this will be way more we will see all right let's move on to other things here a tournament that is already expanding men's women's basketball
- 36:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we talked about that though, but it is far as Porter Moser and the crew as well as you to Brad Chet Carson.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_02]: You're all over all of these.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_02]: It looks like Porter Moser is going to have a much different looking front core.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_02]: We talked about this before.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_02]: Even going back to the long days, it seems that even when they got a center, there wasn't a ton of depth at centers.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_02]: So this is not just like a Porter issue.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_02]: This is like a 15, 16, 17 year OU basketball situation.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_02]: They got bodies at least this go around.
- 36:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, sure seems like it getting yak yak, heck of a name, by the way, who most recently played at Oregon State was at New Mexico State before that, and he's just a big presence down low.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_01]: His numbers weren't sexy last year at Oregon State, but they were respectable, and this is someone that should just be disruptive down low, and you need someone as big as him in a conference like the SEC.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_01]: Even though Mougi, some of the guys, Kai Rogers, Daryon, read had their moments this year.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_01]: Guys like Rubin, Shin you lose some of the best Bigs, Matasavoka Titus from Texas.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_01]: They certainly did have their way at times with the Sooner's Bigs, and I think getting somebody like Yak Yak.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_01]: Definitely does some work to bolster that.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_01]: We talk about Daria and Reed coming back.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_01]: Kai Rogers coming back.
- 37:23[SPEAKER_01]: You also get a big forward.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_01]: in Caniah Ruth's.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_01]: So they've done a lot of work on the front court side of things.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_01]: We talked last week about them getting Pope Isaacs, Tyler Hendrix.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_01]: I still think there's work to be done.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_01]: They should get at least one more guard to compliment those two Xavier Brown.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_01]: It was really good in this first year with the Sooners.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_01]: But I feel better about this
- 37:47[SPEAKER_01]: new look lineup that I did say two or three weeks ago just seeing some of the new additions they've made an emphasis on getting bigger and stronger down low.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_01]: We see someone with Pope Isaacs though he has had his inconsistencies someone that has played SEC ball played now four years of high level basketball that experience should be huge.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_01]: I think they're just a couple pieces away from having a team that should compete then it then it obviously just comes
- 38:16[SPEAKER_01]: haven't seen we talked about this too many times at this point, but we haven't seen a team fully execute under a Porter Moser.
- 38:23[SPEAKER_01]: They're getting more resources now.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_01]: You're seeing a pretty good team coming in from the portal getting gauge may feel from the recruiting trail.
- 38:31[SPEAKER_01]: So it's all about putting it together now, but it looks, it looks a lot more promising than it did a few weeks ago.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_02]: I just can't remember the last time that you're talking about, look, listen, I don't good, bad, otherwise, I'm not talking about quality of basketball player.
- 38:45[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just saying these words, two centers, coming in, listed at six, 11, roots coming in, listed at 16, adding to Kai Rogers, six, nine, 16, adding to Daryon Reed, who has another guy,
- 38:59[SPEAKER_02]: Oklahoma has never, ever, ever had at least that.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_02]: Now, whether any of those guys can dribble basketball, don't get played defensive, it's one of those things that I'm not going to be talking about the basketball player.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just talking about bodies, which is something that, as you said, Carson, they have not had it a look a lot different.
- 39:17[SPEAKER_02]: And it'll be interesting to say that, does this feel like to you, Carson, a little bit of, I don't know if resources think, but
- 39:24[SPEAKER_02]: It just feels like a very unporter roster construction, which is this where maybe we're starting to see a little bit of the new GM Lucas we came in and being like, hey, listen, love what you've done here, I'm going to give you some six 11 guys and see if you can't figure out how to basketball.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was actually talking about this with Josh Callaway and Eddie Redosovich at baseball the other night.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_01]: This is we agreed this is probably the weirdest team that Porter Moser has constructed just in the sense that it could go really well or it could go really poorly.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_01]: But to your point, the big man getting that many guys that are that big that is different from anything else Porter Moser has done.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_01]: That size alone should give them an edge over some teams in this league.
- 40:07[SPEAKER_01]: But you look around the league.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_01]: There have been some very successful portal halls this year.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Texas, a heck of a roster that are bringing in Vanderbilt.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_01]: Texas, I am a lot of these schools that aren't exactly basketball blue bloods are also getting really good roster.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to have to take shape pretty quickly, but it is a very different approach than what we've seen coming into the 2025-26 season, 2024-25 season, really all of Portermo's or seasons.
- 40:36[SPEAKER_01]: And that's just, it seems like he's finally settling into this whole era of portal in I.L.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's an adjustment for every coach making.
- 40:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's one that seems to have taken him a while, but this does at least on paper
- 40:52[SPEAKER_02]: Just create, if you had asked after year one, two or three or four that he was going to add a Russian pro and Krill Elia concept midseason that they were going to sign somebody that had played G league basketball and stuff like that and try to get NCAA approval on that.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_02]: I just be like, no, he's going to try and build build build just funny how that works.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_02]: G-Brown Check got after it as well.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_02]: Added Semiah Smith coming over from Virginia.
- 41:16[SPEAKER_02]: Previously at LSU was an SEC All Freshman caliber player.
- 41:21[SPEAKER_02]: She was on the All Freshman team.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_02]: She had 4.6 points and 4 rebounds per game off the bench for LSU.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_02]: Last year at Virginia 7.9 points per game, 6.8 rebounds per game.
- 41:32[SPEAKER_02]: six, two, it feels like ABER.
- 41:35[SPEAKER_02]: I know that you and I talked in about roster construction stuff like that all throughout this season.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_02]: It feels like this was a piece.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_02]: This kind of piece that Oklahoma could have used a year ago when it just comes to another veteran presence who you know can stand up to the physicality of buzzism of the SEC, but someone that
- 41:52[SPEAKER_02]: It not even necessarily just like I am here to play for Sahara Williams.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, hey, Ray, here's Getson Valchauer has a moment of the bench.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_02]: If you wanted to go with a little bit bigger to match up and be able to get up and down the floor for like an LSU, you would have had that option and not just throw in like a freshman to the wolves.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they certainly could have used that kind of player last season and just to add some depth to a team that was struggling for that at times, but I think this can be a really big time piece for them moving forward with for all the reasons that you said, they still need that here coming back this year, even without Reagan Bears.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_03]: uh... in the line up they're going to need to be able to you know try to match up with the physicality that this league demands that i i think uh... i like a lot of these moves that jenny baronshake is made and not a lot of them have been you know or shattering things
- 42:46[SPEAKER_03]: but given what they had coming back with the Lea Chavez and her potential for significant growth with some of the freshmen that they had last year with Sahara Williams, you didn't need to go for a full overall.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_03]: It's just adding some really valuable pieces that can make you better equipped, to hold up to the physicality and the league.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_03]: It's a hold up to the teams that you're going to face in the NCAA tournament.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_03]: And I think I don't know if this the ceiling right now is as high as maybe I thought this team was a year ago, but it's still feeling, you know, like a pretty good group that Ginny Baranchic has a good chance of going and competing in the SEC with.
- 43:27[SPEAKER_02]: side to see just what what is yearly a chavez look like that I think that's gonna dictate a lot of everything and certainly it feels like this is a roster that maybe is a little bit more
- 43:38[SPEAKER_02]: built with her in mind as opposed to we have this roster if you get a talent like that you bring her on you figure it out it feels like this is less about figure it out and more like all right the keys are full yours let's see what you've got here uh let's head on to the diamond sports happenings if you missed our full breakdown of everything that happened in college station all that stuff Abraham I hopped on
- 43:59[SPEAKER_02]: the podcast on Monday to recap everything.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, you softball, if you missed that, it's in this podcast feed on Monday.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_02]: If you're a YouTuber, just click John Hoover media down there.
- 44:10[SPEAKER_02]: You're already watching this video up here.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_02]: So just click it there.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_02]: It's one of the videos that is up there.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_02]: For those that missed it, sharing might be caring, but Oklahoma is not worried about sharing the level across the SEC.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_02]: They take two of three.
- 44:24[SPEAKER_02]: Doesn't really matter how you get there, I suppose, as long as you get the two.
- 44:28[SPEAKER_02]: And I thought it was interesting.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_02]: We were talking with Patty Gassell last night, just about her saying,
- 44:33[SPEAKER_02]: Friday, little bit of a tire fire, and she was interested, didn't know quite exactly how this team might respond on Saturday, knowing they had to come out and win two of two to not have to share and go to tire breakers.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_02]: As it turns out, because of Georgia, it would have been fine anyway, you could have shared it and got the one seed and all that stuff would just one win.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_02]: But,
- 44:52[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, I think that that's something that she secretly probably reveled in right because it allowed her to put some extra stakes on a regular season game for some of those freshmen and the sophomores and maybe bigger leadership spots to be like, you have to go out there and win both of these games and guess what at some point in the postseason, we're probably going to be in this spot where you got to go win a doer die game.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_02]: I think she loved that kind of vibe on Saturday.
- 45:16[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no doubt about it and she also liked to think the way her team responded to those opportunities and sometimes when you're as good as Oklahoma has been it's been difficult to to find those, you know, certainly when they were in the big 12, but even the last couple years in the SEC at times it's difficult.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_03]: To put your team in those really tough, do-or-die moments, so when you get into the post-season you sort of are flying blind and don't know how they're going to react.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_03]: But they got some of that this weekend, I thought it was massive the way that Cassidy Pickering bounced back, you know, the numbers overall in the series weren't fantastic to out of ten.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_03]: But you look at the moments where she had each of those hits where we're massive for them and just I think a home run especially Sort of lifted the top off things.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe a little bit for her.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_03]: We'll see how she's able to respond in Lexington, but pati gaso loved
- 46:16[SPEAKER_03]: being able to put her team through that and being able to pick out spots to put specific players through things.
- 46:22[SPEAKER_03]: I wrote about Alyssa Parker in that regard this morning and being able to throw her out there even though it was a 6-0 game at the time.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_03]: You know, she gives up four runs there with a couple of singles a walk in a home run and then they have to go to Lowry but just having been through that moment.
- 46:43[SPEAKER_03]: I think was good for her valuable for her and also, you know, Patty gaso feels really good about the way that she's throwing independently of results at this point.
- 46:55[SPEAKER_03]: So it'll be interesting to see how she's used in the postseason, but these freshmen.
- 47:00[SPEAKER_03]: it's going to be a new experience even though you put them through this when you get to these doer dot moments you never know for sure how they're going to react and know you have a lot of those freshmen that are in really key positions right now but to this point they've handled things fantastically.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_02]: It's also just one of the things with good or bad or otherwise it's something that Patty and talk like they're setting up a list of Parker they want to use her in this closer role I think and there have been moments where we know this especially some of these home games that love field you get to the fourth inning and you go from great we're going to have a closer to oh I think that Ella Parker might end the game two swings from there or something like that as you get like the fifth inning and things where you put the pressure out there I
- 47:44[SPEAKER_02]: We're now up by eight going to the top of the fifth.
- 47:46[SPEAKER_02]: So that's important there.
- 47:48[SPEAKER_02]: If you want to read all that Cassie Pickering, Oklahoma Studenters on SI.com, as well as a Parker, Oklahoma Studenters on SI.com, I'll be right.
- 47:54[SPEAKER_02]: And we're just going to carry on the pitcher train as Sid Burzon, I've got to talk to her, got some good stuff from her.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_02]: So we'll have that as well.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_02]: Probably Wednesday evening hitting the site if I am remembering my calendar correctly.
- 48:07[SPEAKER_02]: Finally, let's close with skipscrew, not quite headed out to Lexington.
- 48:12[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, because they head to the map when they get to a tournament time, but a couple more series before that happens.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_02]: Let me ask you this Carson, how do we outlaw home runs on Sundays?
- 48:24[SPEAKER_01]: They need that.
- 48:25[SPEAKER_01]: They really need that at this point.
- 48:27[SPEAKER_01]: It seems like their game one struggles of kind of carried into game three lately and that was obviously the big issue against the gators on Sunday.
- 48:37[SPEAKER_02]: It puts them in a spot where this is not a panic moment because I think we're talking about bottom case scenarios that you're a two seed going into one of these regional spots, not like a two overall national seed because number two team in a regional added bonus, can't go to an SEC regional.
- 48:54[SPEAKER_02]: So you might also kind of benefit there, but if you're talking about top 16, it really start in the feel like, do they need?
- 49:03[SPEAKER_02]: Bare minimum two series wins, maybe five games plus some fun and Hoover.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's kind of what I'm thinking.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it's a good opportunity this week and if they could somehow win on the road at Arkansas, win two of three at the least, then win two or three against Tennessee next week at in Oklahoma City.
- 49:26[SPEAKER_01]: I think that would be big and then winning a gamer too and Hoover, it's gonna take some work to get there.
- 49:31[SPEAKER_01]: They just can't coast by this Florida series.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_01]: It felt more disappointing really than it's probably the most disappointing series since the Texas series when they got swept lost two of those games by collapse, lost the first 114 nothing.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_01]: Game one, I mean that was a game they were outplayed all game and that really came down to a coaching miscube by Florida to pull a didn't king in favor of their bullpen.
- 49:56[SPEAKER_01]: they're both in giving up three runs.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_01]: Oh you wins that one and we've talked about this team getting out played before and winning and that's something that you can do.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_01]: They count the same whether you beat them by one run or 10 runs.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_01]: But it kind of did look like that being outplayed carried over into games two and three wasn't particularly close on Saturday, really wasn't close on Sunday.
- 50:19[SPEAKER_01]: So the consistency just hasn't been there lately, obviously losing last week against Auburn, hitting wise, pitching wise, obviously no fall of Cameron Johnson that he had to leave the game early on Saturday.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_01]: Um, LJ Mercury has had a good redemptive,
- 50:35[SPEAKER_01]: outing on Friday night out of the bullpen.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_01]: But there just needs to be more consistency.
- 50:40[SPEAKER_01]: There's not really then one area of Jacksonville.
- 50:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's just been pretty consistent, but besides that, there hasn't been a whole lot of, okay, this and this are all going well at the same time, which.
- 50:50[SPEAKER_01]: That's what you ultimately need to make a run at Omaha.
- 50:53[SPEAKER_01]: So this team does have work to do to host to get in a better position.
- 50:58[SPEAKER_01]: But like you said, they are safely in the field, barring an Owen 6 and then first round exit and Hoover, that's the only thing that maybe could move them down to the three line, but they should be safely a two seat at the least.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_02]: One thing that will be consistent this weekend, good luck.
- 51:17[SPEAKER_02]: in the midst of all the hog calling that will be happening.
- 51:20[SPEAKER_02]: We know when lose draw the folks out there in Fayetteville.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_02]: And I say this, endearingly, this is not their sickos, their psychos, I mean that and like the absolute best way.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm just happy that we will not be rumbling with anyone on a sidewalk waiting to get into the outfield or anything like that this weekend.
- 51:38[SPEAKER_02]: So let's avoid all of that.
- 51:41[SPEAKER_02]: And then they'll be up at the
- 51:42[SPEAKER_02]: brick here for the volunteers role do which should be fun.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_02]: I'm excited for that.
- 51:46[SPEAKER_02]: Of course, have you gotten a chance to head out and see the what are they now?
- 51:49[SPEAKER_02]: The comments officially formally of the Oklahoma City baseball team and the Dodgers and the Red Hawks and all that stuff.
- 51:56[SPEAKER_02]: Have you got a chance to head out to the brick?
- 51:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I made it up there last year, really cool ballpark.
- 52:00[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm a big fan of going to minor league baseball games, just like harded fun.
- 52:04[SPEAKER_01]: I obviously don't really have a horse in that race.
- 52:07[SPEAKER_01]: So I had a good time when I went last year.
- 52:08[SPEAKER_01]: And it's going to be cool to see, oh, you against a team that maybe not as great this year, but the national champions two years ago.
- 52:15[SPEAKER_01]: So that's a heck of a way to end the season for the sooner there's that home quote unquote.
- 52:21[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it should be cool.
- 52:22[SPEAKER_02]: There's good vibes at the break.
- 52:23[SPEAKER_02]: It's also one of my favorite things to do in the summer is whether you're coming home for like a thunder game, stuff like that is you're hitting 35 south as I do to get home and you just see the bricks all lit up and everybody's bounced in there.
- 52:34[SPEAKER_02]: It makes for a, that's how you know, summer is here, find a patio and
- 52:38[SPEAKER_02]: enjoy it, but gentlemen, have we missed anything else?
- 52:41[SPEAKER_02]: I think it might be time to scoot on out of here today, though.
- 52:46[SPEAKER_02]: Carson, good luck with all the buffalo happenings, ABER, good luck with you hating your colleague, that, you know, good job.
- 52:53[SPEAKER_02]: Happy for the staff meeting in the group chat.
- 52:56[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to be excellent later on.
- 52:58[SPEAKER_02]: All thanks to you guys.
- 52:59[SPEAKER_02]: So we put that.
- 53:00[SPEAKER_01]: Abraham and I can bond over hating the flyers, though.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_01]: I think both of us are hoping for a four-row sweep against the flyers.
- 53:06[SPEAKER_01]: That is one of my least favorite pro sports teams, so I'm right with them on that one.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_02]: I will say this, and you guys don't have to agree with this, but anytime gritty is throwing something off an upper deck into a lower deck, I'm kind of in.
- 53:20[SPEAKER_02]: Now the other thing is pretty cool.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just giving me more mascots.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_02]: Like give me more
- 53:30[SPEAKER_02]: Blupper may or may not be ripped off of the philipinatic, but he's better anyway.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_02]: So who cares?
- 53:34[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_02]: That's all the damage I can do.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_02]: We'll stop sides wiping into other fan bases and we'll get Avery out before he like actually ends all of us.
- 53:42[SPEAKER_02]: Big thank you to Ryan Avery, big thank you to Carsonfield John Hoover Ryan Chapman here.
- 53:45[SPEAKER_02]: Shout out to Brady Trantham who we will let out of the bunker here in about three minutes.
- 53:49[SPEAKER_02]: Just in case any news had happened.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_02]: We will be back Avery and I'll be back on Monday.
- 53:54[SPEAKER_02]: We'll be reacting to selection Sunday for softball is Sunday night.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_02]: As everyone remembers last year, regards when we get weather and Lexington on Saturday or not, Oklahoma's involved, we will have selections Sunday on Sunday.
- 54:06[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously six PM, ESP and two, I believe, if I'm remembering correctly, we'll go home.
- 54:12[SPEAKER_02]: Beautiful.
- 54:12[SPEAKER_02]: We'll have that full review of everything happening out.
- 54:15[SPEAKER_02]: In Lexington, we'll preview a regional play.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_02]: All that fun stuff to hear on the mother ship, the suitors on a side pot, we'll be back next Wednesday.
- 54:22[SPEAKER_02]: But for the crew, thank you so much for tagging along.
- 54:25[SPEAKER_02]: We'll talk to you guys next week.
