- 0:06Speaker 1: the heavy radio in Australia. Yeah, here we are. Thanks
- 0:11Speaker 1: for joining us today, Max, always a pleasure. Good to
- 0:15Speaker 1: be here talking to you man. How you doing. I'm
- 0:17Speaker 1: doing very well today.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Thanks. Madn't like your little arm guard frog that you've
- 0:21Speaker 2: got in the background. There is he watching over here?
- 0:25Speaker 1: What's that god Frog? That's Bobasor from Pokemon.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Alright here, he's watching out for you.
- 0:40Speaker 1: It's our grandkids. But I think it looks great, so
- 0:43Speaker 1: I just leave it over there, so coval here.
- 0:47Speaker 2: I have announced the third World trilogy, Australian Chaur starting
- 0:51Speaker 2: in Sydney on January sevent eighth and moving through Brisbane, Melbourne,
- 0:54Speaker 2: Hobart and Adalide, finishing in Freemantle on the twenty fourth
- 0:57Speaker 2: of January. Mate, So what lights if you got played
- 1:01Speaker 2: for us on this tour?
- 1:01Speaker 1: Mate? Nostalgic brutality? Brother? Oh yes, let me let me
- 1:11Speaker 1: break it down for you. Why why is I say
- 1:15Speaker 1: nostalgic brutality. It's because it's the closest thing you can
- 1:20Speaker 1: get to nineteen eighties Brazil extreme metal scene. Morbid Vision's
- 1:27Speaker 1: best devastrations schizophrenia is the brutality of those records, the
- 1:35Speaker 1: way they meant to be sound, the way we meant
- 1:39Speaker 1: them to sound, just like the re recordings, except it's live.
- 1:43Speaker 1: It's all real, live shit, no gimmicks, no other crap.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Is plug your amp and go, you know. And then
- 1:53Speaker 1: like we go full on. We have the spikes, the
- 1:58Speaker 1: bullet belts, like we bring everything. It's like, you know,
- 2:02Speaker 1: it's like a time turnel. You get traveling in time,
- 2:05Speaker 1: going back to nineteen eighty three. I even say that
- 2:09Speaker 1: welcome to nineteen eighty three, like in the middle of
- 2:12Speaker 1: the set, because it does feel like, yeah, we a
- 2:15Speaker 1: e nineteen eighty three in twenty twenty four. But prepare
- 2:20Speaker 1: yourselves for extreme a journey into the of the beginning
- 2:26Speaker 1: of extreme music, man, you know, because that's what it is.
- 2:29Speaker 1: We kind of we're together. We do Hellhammer and Venom.
- 2:33Speaker 1: We are the kind of like pioneers of this extreme
- 2:38Speaker 1: metal stuff that's big now. You know, around the world
- 2:42Speaker 1: you have all this black metal, death metal, trash metal,
- 2:47Speaker 1: all this that's the beginning. The best of devastation is
- 2:50Speaker 1: the right at the beginning of all that.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Okay, the trilogy is of course the second shorter albums,
- 2:58Speaker 2: Bacial Devastation, Morbivision and Schizophrenia. So does that mean they're
- 3:02Speaker 2: only going to be playing songs from those three albums?
- 3:05Speaker 1: No, no surprises, all right, I want to push you
- 3:11Speaker 1: for anymore. Don't make me, don't make me give out
- 3:15Speaker 1: the surprises. But it's definitely some surprises. Maybe one or
- 3:21Speaker 1: two cover songs that you never heard it before. We
- 3:24Speaker 1: always love to throw that in. You know, There's there's
- 3:30Speaker 1: some other Seple stuff that people love. There's some Cavaliras
- 3:35Speaker 1: stuff that people love. But you know, of course the
- 3:38Speaker 1: main show is based on the trilogy. That's why it's
- 3:43Speaker 1: called Third Word Trilogy. So we're gonna play most of
- 3:46Speaker 1: the bulk of the material is Best of Devastation, Morbid
- 3:50Speaker 1: Vision and Schizophrenia, but we have some other stuff also
- 3:54Speaker 1: to make the show really kill her. You know, people
- 3:58Speaker 1: will not be disappointed. They will they will get there.
- 4:00Speaker 1: They don't get the share fix of metal for sure.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Oh yeah, h and I is red recorded albums featured
- 4:07Speaker 2: a brand new song mate, So you're gonna be playing
- 4:09Speaker 2: any of those three new ones?
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yeah? Probably Tracy is the big one from Morbid Visions
- 4:19Speaker 1: and nightmares of of insanities, like really the thrashier one
- 4:30Speaker 1: of of Schizophrenia. Ah, you know, I think, like, I
- 4:37Speaker 1: think it's cool that we did that. That's kind of
- 4:40Speaker 1: like is actually I remember the riff from when we
- 4:47Speaker 1: were kids, so that's like the original riff from before
- 4:52Speaker 1: Best of Devastation. I remember the original chorus. Uh. But
- 5:00Speaker 1: Nightmares is a brand new song we created when I
- 5:04Speaker 1: was making Schizophrenia. So yeah, we could you play them?
- 5:07Speaker 1: You know, I think the crowd would like it, so.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Of course yourself and you know coming over. But who
- 5:13Speaker 2: makes up the rest of the band.
- 5:16Speaker 1: So we have Travis Stone he's from Pig Destroyer and Desilus,
- 5:25Speaker 1: among many other bands, Castle Freak, and then my son
- 5:29Speaker 1: Igor Amadeus he's in Healing Magic, Go Ahead and Die.
- 5:34Speaker 1: He is playing bass, and of course my brother playing drums. Yeah.
- 5:38Speaker 1: So it's a great line up because what I like
- 5:42Speaker 1: about it is that you have the two old you know,
- 5:46Speaker 1: old farts as I call it, Me and Igor, you know,
- 5:50Speaker 1: the old school dudes, you know, the wizards, and then
- 5:54Speaker 1: you have the new kids, you know, the young kids.
- 5:56Speaker 1: They are hungry, they are fresh, they are energetic. So
- 6:03Speaker 1: the combination of the old and the new is perfect.
- 6:06Speaker 1: It makes into a just a great, great, great chemistry
- 6:10Speaker 1: for the live show. Yeah.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Now I'm a father myself, right, so I pretty much
- 6:15Speaker 2: know the answer to this song. But from your point
- 6:17Speaker 2: of view, man, like, how cool is it having your
- 6:20Speaker 2: son on one side and your brother behind your live
- 6:23Speaker 2: on stage, man, Like, that must just give you goosebumps
- 6:25Speaker 2: every night.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Don't forget my wife on the side of the stage, sorry, Gloria.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Uh and probably one of them selling T shirts somewhere. Yeah,
- 6:41Speaker 1: everybody knows I'm a big into the family, you know.
- 6:47Speaker 1: The metal family thing is big for me. It's kind
- 6:51Speaker 1: of like how I based my life. When I got
- 6:55Speaker 1: married with Gloria, I told her we're going to start
- 6:57Speaker 1: our own tribe. And that's that's what I meant about.
- 6:59Speaker 1: It was like creating, you know, having our own kids
- 7:03Speaker 1: and hopefully get them involved in the in the kind
- 7:08Speaker 1: of like mafia like kind of like you know, uh,
- 7:14Speaker 1: a little bit like Godfather. You know, you're you're born
- 7:18Speaker 1: into this and there's no way out, you can get out.
- 7:22Speaker 1: You're in it, you know, but it's like it's incredible,
- 7:26Speaker 1: incredible feeling.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Uh.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Yeah, like you said, having you know, my son Igor,
- 7:33Speaker 1: my brother Igor on the stage at the same time.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Just I never imagined that a thousand years that was
- 7:39Speaker 1: gonna work out like this, but it did, and it's
- 7:43Speaker 1: it's incredible. It's it's a man. It just goes to
- 7:46Speaker 1: show you that, you know, life is full of surprises.
- 7:50Speaker 1: And after doing this for so many years, you you
- 7:54Speaker 1: were a dad, so you know it. How how proud
- 7:58Speaker 1: that that can be, you know, And to me, it's
- 8:01Speaker 1: like incredible that I have my family with me, they're
- 8:05Speaker 1: doing stuff with me. And I feel also really good
- 8:10Speaker 1: because not that I want to stop playing music, because
- 8:15Speaker 1: I don't have any plans to retire or anything like that.
- 8:18Speaker 1: But if I ever do, I feel that I'm I'm
- 8:21Speaker 1: secure they will carry it on. You know, they got
- 8:23Speaker 1: the they got the musicianship, the attitude to carry on,
- 8:29Speaker 1: you know. So it's great. But yeah, it's a it's
- 8:32Speaker 1: fantastic having them on the stage with this is incredible.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Yeah, she is right. Yeah, the part of this still
- 8:38Speaker 2: started with the twenty twenty three revisited releases of Beast
- 8:42Speaker 2: Your Devastation and Morbid Vision. So how long have you
- 8:45Speaker 2: actually been thinking about rerecordingized albums?
- 8:48Speaker 1: Before you did it for a while now, you know.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I think it started with when we start playing them live.
- 8:55Speaker 1: We started with Roots. We went to Australia with Roots
- 9:00Speaker 1: to return to Roots. Then we did Beneath the Remains
- 9:05Speaker 1: in Our Eyes. I think the idea playing live gave
- 9:10Speaker 1: us the idea of, hey, maybe you'd be coold to
- 9:14Speaker 1: re record those old, old albums that sound like dog shit.
- 9:20Speaker 1: You know, there's a charm of that. Don't get me wrong.
- 9:22Speaker 1: I love the originals and there's definitely a charm more Divisions.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Especially it's auto tune. My guitar was out of tune.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I didn't know, so I recorded the record is auto tune.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I think that's why the black metal guys love it
- 9:39Speaker 1: so much. You know, it's total fucking punk rock auto
- 9:44Speaker 1: tune recording. But we as a musician, to me, it
- 9:51Speaker 1: was always frustrated to know there was great songs in
- 9:54Speaker 1: those records like War and Funeral Rights and that Cromancer
- 10:01Speaker 1: that you cannot even hear the riffs on the original recordings.
- 10:06Speaker 1: And I was like, man, it'll be could you actually
- 10:09Speaker 1: hear those rifts? There's a great riffs, there are great songs,
- 10:13Speaker 1: will be could you actually hear them in a in
- 10:16Speaker 1: a good setting, you know, not not really. I don't
- 10:21Speaker 1: mean the recordings. I don't need them to be modern.
- 10:24Speaker 1: We don't need a modern sound. We just need good sound,
- 10:28Speaker 1: you know. So that's why we really didn't even went
- 10:31Speaker 1: for a modern sound on them. It's like this, the
- 10:34Speaker 1: sound is actually based on the old old school sound.
- 10:39Speaker 1: They just sound better than the original, and we play
- 10:41Speaker 1: them tighter, more just precise, and but it's still full
- 10:48Speaker 1: of piece and vinegar and it's angry, it's it's it's dirty,
- 10:53Speaker 1: you know. And that's why people like the re recordings,
- 10:56Speaker 1: I think because we didn't clean anything up, we didn't
- 11:01Speaker 1: polish them, you know. It's like it's still dirty and
- 11:04Speaker 1: greedy and heavy. You know, it just sounds more badass
- 11:09Speaker 1: with the production that we put on. And I think
- 11:13Speaker 1: that's and that's why Lives sounds so good because of that,
- 11:17Speaker 1: because it's got the same power live, even more powerful
- 11:21Speaker 1: life than the records.
- 11:24Speaker 2: So along those lines, mate, like when when you initially
- 11:26Speaker 2: set out to revisit the albums, did you have an
- 11:29Speaker 2: open mind of how you wanted things to go? Did
- 11:31Speaker 2: you sort of have a set idea of which way
- 11:33Speaker 2: you wanted to see things just.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Like everything else in life, like I do, I really
- 11:39Speaker 1: kind of like just jump with my eyes closed and
- 11:42Speaker 1: see what happens, you know. Uh, And those are like
- 11:47Speaker 1: those I think those are the best things. I think
- 11:50Speaker 1: my my best records were the ones that I really
- 11:56Speaker 1: didn't really prepare much for it. I just kind of
- 11:58Speaker 1: went for it, kind of that like like blind faith.
- 12:02Speaker 1: You know, you you you think it's gonna get there,
- 12:06Speaker 1: you don't know how eventually you get there. And and
- 12:11Speaker 1: it was the same. We we didn't really think too
- 12:13Speaker 1: much about it. We just kind of said, I look
- 12:15Speaker 1: at egos like we can't do it, let's do it, okay,
- 12:20Speaker 1: And we went without without any like actually you like
- 12:25Speaker 1: you give zero fucks, Like I don't care because you
- 12:30Speaker 1: treat them good. You try to get them the best
- 12:32Speaker 1: you can. But at the same time as it was
- 12:36Speaker 1: a bit real risky, you know, I think you know
- 12:38Speaker 1: a lot of people actually said that about rerecording, that
- 12:41Speaker 1: a lot of people don't like re recordings. A lot
- 12:44Speaker 1: of people are attached to the original. They have a
- 12:47Speaker 1: hard time hearing re recordings. But I think we managed
- 12:53Speaker 1: to create something that is powerful as the original, but
- 13:00Speaker 1: better sounding than the original, and earlier this.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Yeah, you completed the trilogy with the release of Schizophreniam mate,
- 13:07Speaker 2: so I know this is going to be really hard
- 13:09Speaker 2: for you to do. But out of the three that
- 13:10Speaker 2: you've rerecorded, which one is your personal favorite? Now?
- 13:17Speaker 1: Well, I think plain wise Schizophrenium might be the best
- 13:27Speaker 1: one as far as the way we plane sonic wise,
- 13:35Speaker 1: my favorite one is actually Morbid Visions because again, the
- 13:40Speaker 1: original is auto tune.
