- Lucas: So we've spent a lot of time with Timur the conqueror — the sieges, the elephants, the diplomacy. But there's this other side to his legacy that I think people don't always connect to him, and it's what happened after he died. His descendants, especially his son Shah Rukh and his grandson Ulugh Beg, actually turned Samarkand and Herat into these incredible centers of learning and art. Luna: Wait, so the same dynasty that burned cities also built observatories? Lucas: Exactly. And honestly, it's one of the most fascinating ironies of the whole period. Timur himself wasn't particularly interested in scholarship — he was a warrior through and through. But his sons and grandsons had grown up in a world where their father had brought scholars and artisans to Samarkand from all over, partly as spoils of war, and they inherited that world and built on it. Lucas: Take Ulugh Beg, for instance. He was Timur's grandson, and he became governor of Samarkand when he was just a teenager. He was also a serious astronomer. I mean, seriously serious. He built this massive observatory — the Samarkand Observatory — around the 1420s, and it was one of the most advanced in the world at that point. Luna: What made it so advanced? I mean, they didn't have telescopes, right? Lucas: Right, no telescopes. But what they had was a huge, fixed instrument — a sort of giant arc called a sextant, though it was actually built into the ground. It was about forty meters in radius, which let them measure the positions of stars with incredible accuracy. With the naked eye, but with that scale, they could get readings that were really precise. Lucas: And Ulugh Beg didn't just build it and admire it. He gathered a team of astronomers, including the brilliant al-Kashi, who was already famous for his work on pi and decimal fractions. Together, they compiled a star catalog, the Zij-i Sultani, which listed the positions of over a thousand stars. It was so accurate that it wasn't surpassed in the West for a couple of centuries. Luna: That's incredible. So he was a ruler who also did science himself? Lucas: He did. He didn't just fund it; he was actually involved in the observations. He'd spend nights at the observatory, sometimes even in the cold, working out the math. He also determined the length of the sidereal year to within about a minute of the modern value. That's not something you get from just waving at the sky. Lucas: But here's the thing — Ulugh Beg was also a political figure, and that came with problems. He was a capable administrator, but he wasn't as ruthless as his grandfather. And in the power struggles after Timur's death, his own son ended up turning against him. He was actually assassinated — his son Abd al-Latif had him killed in 1449. So the same dynasty that produced this brilliant astronomer also had that kind of violence in its blood. Luna: That's brutal. But I'm curious about the art side — you mentioned Herat and Shah Rukh. What happened there? Lucas: So Shah Rukh, who was Timur's fourth son, ended up with the western part of the empire, and he ruled from Herat, in present-day Afghanistan. He was a patron of the arts on a huge scale. Under him and especially under his son Baysunghur, Herat became this dazzling center of Persian miniature painting and bookmaking. Lucas: The Herat school of painting developed a style that was incredibly refined — lots of detail, rich color, and these scenes that blend poetry, history, and myth. They produced manuscripts like the Shahnameh, the Persian epic, with illustrations that are now considered masterpieces. It wasn't just painting either — they had calligraphers, binders, illuminators. It was a whole industry of book art. Luna: So they were making beautiful books while the empire was falling apart? I mean, was there continuity or was this in the middle of chaos? Lucas: That's the interesting part. Yes, there was political fragmentation, but there was also this cultural continuity. The Timurid princes were competing with each other, but they were also trying to outdo each other in patronage. So you'd have one prince in Herat commissioning this incredible manuscript, and another in Samarkand building an observatory. It was like a cultural arms race, but for beautiful things. Lucas: And it wasn't just for show. They were genuinely interested in the arts and sciences. Shah Rukh himself was a patron of history — he had a court historian, Hafiz-i Abru, who wrote a massive universal history. So they were actively trying to preserve knowledge and create new works, even as their armies were still fighting each other. Luna: It's kind of like they were trying to prove they were worthy of Timur's legacy, but in a different way. Lucas: Exactly. They had to live up to this enormous shadow. And one of the ways they did that was by building monuments to their own greatness — not just in stone, but in books and star catalogs. And I think that's a really human thing, wanting to leave something that lasts beyond the battlefield. Lucas: You know, it reminds me of something Ulugh Beg once said. He was talking about his observatory, and he said something like, 'The sky is the same for all of us, but each of us sees it through our own eyes.' I might be paraphrasing, but the idea is that he saw his work as a way of connecting to something universal, beyond the petty squabbles of his time. Luna: That's beautiful. And it kind of makes you wonder what we'd have today if Timur hadn't brought all those scholars to Samarkand in the first place. Lucas: Right — there's a direct line, actually. A lot of the scholars who worked at Ulugh Beg's observatory were descendants of the people Timur had relocated to Samarkand decades earlier. So even his destructiveness had this unintended creative side effect. It's a bit like the fire that clears the forest for new growth, I guess. Lucas: And that's one of the things that makes this period so rich — it's not just one story. It's a web of connections, violence and creativity feeding each other. And honestly, it's the kind of thing that makes me want to keep digging into history, turn after turn. Luna: Me too. And speaking of that, I know a few listeners help keep this going. It's a small thing, but it's real. Lucas: Yeah — we're able to do this because a handful of people chip in monthly at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. No ads, just listener support. It honestly makes a difference. Luna: It does. And we're grateful for it. Lucas: So back to the stars — Ulugh Beg's observatory was actually rediscovered in the early twentieth century, when Russian archaeologists dug up the remains of that giant arc. They found it buried under layers of earth, and it's now a museum. You can still see the curved trench where the sextant was. Luna: That's amazing. So you can actually stand where Ulugh Beg stood and look up at the same sky? Lucas: Exactly. And that's what I love about history — it's not all distant. You can visit these places, touch the stones, see the manuscripts. And with the Timurids, we have this tangible connection to a moment when science and art flourished even in the middle of chaos. It's a reminder that human creativity isn't just a product of peaceful times — sometimes it's born out of the very forces that seem to destroy everything.
