- 0:00Welcome back everyone to the Real Life Theology Podcast. Today's episode features
- 0:04Jim Putman talking about having a hard conversation requires relationship.
- 0:11I hope you guys enjoy this episode.
- 0:14You know, I'm excited to be here. I'm excited to meet with this group of people.
- 0:20And I'm excited to get to see some of my friends from around the country again.
- 0:28Love you, Bobby. Appreciate all of you.
- 0:31You know, many of you know my story if you've read the books or heard me over the years.
- 0:35My journey started in a pastor's home.
- 0:38Very sincere couple that met in Bible college, but neither of them had really been discipled.
- 0:45And so they were undiscipled individuals who went to Bible college and were educated.
- 0:51And now their job was to lead a church.
- 0:54So they had education. They understood the key doctrines and a lot of that.
- 1:00But, you know, they didn't have good theology with flesh on it growing up as kids.
- 1:07And so my family lived through the growing up process.
- 1:15Meaning that as my parents sincerely grew in Christ, they made a lot of mistakes along the way just like we all do.
- 1:23But, you know, they didn't actually start with a good idea about what it meant to be a church leader.
- 1:29And then to have another sphere of your life called home.
- 1:32And when do those two overlap? What does it look like to parent kids?
- 1:38I mean, again, neither of them.
- 1:40My mom came from a single parent divorced home and my dad from an absentee sort of a situation.
- 1:46So they were trying to make it up as they go.
- 1:48And then you add a rebellious person to the mix who's got his own sinfulness and brokenness.
- 1:54And then you add everything that life piles on, choices people make.
- 1:58And you end up with a view of God and church that's inaccurate.
- 2:04And so I rejected the God I knew.
- 2:09The God I'd been shown by the church.
- 2:12And as I went out into the world to, you know, kind of make my own way and live according to the plan that I had in my mind,
- 2:21I came to what many of us have come to.
- 2:26I am a terrible God.
- 2:28I am, I don't, this whole compass inside of me that if I just follow it, it would lead to happiness.
- 2:37The compass inside of me does not lead to happiness.
- 2:40It's broken.
- 2:41It's a broken compass.
- 2:43And, you know, many of us, I'm a hunter.
- 2:45I've been in the woods with wrong directions, turned around, lost, and it leads to bad place,
- 2:53especially when you're leading people who are following you.
- 2:56Your loss, their loss doesn't lead to a great environment.
- 3:00I came to the conclusion that I needed Jesus.
- 3:05But then my journey went, okay, I'll accept Jesus, but I will never accept the church.
- 3:09And many of you have heard me say that over the years.
- 3:11And that led to a conversation with my father who, along the way, acknowledged that he had not led a balanced home or a balanced church.
- 3:24Especially in his younger years, he acknowledged, first of all, he pursued relationship with a person who had pretty much destroyed him,
- 3:32which showed that there was something in him beyond himself.
- 3:36But he also, along the way, would say he was sorry for the issues that he had caused in his growing up process.
- 3:43And so it kept me in the game with him.
- 3:46And it led to him being able to speak into my life and to say, Jim, the church is God's idea.
- 3:55Matthew, you know, Jesus says, I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.
- 4:01And so the church is Jesus's idea.
- 4:04Well, that led to a conversation of me saying, well, if the church is Jesus's idea, then it's a bad idea.
- 4:13And how can you have a good God who has a church that looks like that?
- 4:18Which led to a conversation where my dad said, Jim, first of all, people are broken and God is a God of grace.
- 4:25But he made this very clear.
- 4:27He said, Jesus didn't say he would bless a church, not your church, not my church.
- 4:33He didn't say that my church was a good idea or your church was a good idea.
- 4:37He said, I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.
- 4:42And he said, is it possible that the church has become too much our church and not enough his church, which is why it looks so bad?
- 4:52It doesn't work.
- 4:54It doesn't win.
- 4:56And the fact that he would acknowledge that question as a pastor was important to me.
- 5:02And he gave me the freedom to go, Jim, I really want you to go through and take it rather than react to what you've been shown or from the atheist perspective.
- 5:13Remember, I at one point was an atheist.
- 5:15I just said, you know, I unfortunately I saw what the church looked like.
- 5:19A broken church looked like from within.
- 5:21But I also saw what it looked like from without.
- 5:23So I had kind of a double whammy.
- 5:25It doesn't work on the inside and it certainly isn't worth being a part of on the outside.
- 5:28He said, let's go back to God's word.
- 5:30And I want to encourage you to look into God's word.
- 5:36And then, you know, I was a coach.
- 5:38I was, you know, an athlete.
- 5:40He said, what if you were to create something that looked more like what God had intended?
- 5:47And I said, why would I create something like, I'm not the, this isn't my field.
- 5:51I don't really care about that.
- 5:52And I'm going to go do my thing out here.
- 5:55And he said, well, is that God's calling in your life?
- 5:58So there was this discipleship process that happened.
- 6:01One of the reasons I'm so passionate about discipleship is because I got to see what it looked like to go to church.
- 6:11And that didn't really make any difference in my life.
- 6:14And then I got to be discipled by, I don't remember a sermon my dad ever preached.
- 6:21But I do remember the phone calls, the conversations, the relationship in the middle of the night.
- 6:26I remember being discipled, and it changed my life.
- 6:30And then I started to look and go, wait a minute.
- 6:32Most people have gone to church, but they've really never been discipled.
- 6:35They may have been educated, but they were never discipled.
- 6:41They may have received some information, but they hadn't really been through transformation.
- 6:49And so as I was going through this whole process, I understood this.
- 6:54Being a college wrestler and a brawler, I understood that this whole process of coming to know Christ,
- 7:02part of that process was me coming to the understanding that there really is a spiritual battle.
- 7:07There really is demons.
- 7:09There really is this war on.
- 7:11And to be a Christian, there's a war.
- 7:13There's a fight.
- 7:15And there's deception.
- 7:18And not only does it hit you from the outside, the devil really targets the inside.
- 7:24I mean, because using a football metaphor, if he can get, no matter how talented the team is,
- 7:29if he can get the fight, the guys on the team in the huddle to fight with each other,
- 7:34then he owns them on the line of scrimmage.
- 7:37And so there's this spiritual battle that I came to understand.
- 7:41And as I came to understand this, there were two issues that I thought was important.
- 7:48But one, I assumed, wrongly I might add, I assumed was a given.
- 7:54And the other needed to be worked on.
- 7:59So as I started diving into this and the Lord moved me into actual ministry,
- 8:03something I said I'd never do,
- 8:06I realized that I was supposed to take responsibility and try to do this.
- 8:10And there's two issues.
- 8:12One was a doctrinal issue, was a doctrine.
- 8:15Now, in wrestling, a doctrine is like the rules, right?
- 8:21There's rules in wrestling.
- 8:24And there's ways, you know, there's names of things.
- 8:27There's belief systems in wrestling.
- 8:31And then there's the actual practice of what is the right methodology
- 8:35to get that person from knowing about something to actually doing something well.
- 8:40So as a coach, there's teaching them the rules,
- 8:43and that's a single leg, that's a double leg, that's a, you know, whatever.
- 8:47There's informing them about something,
- 8:49but that's not what a coach does, just to form them about something.
- 8:52Their job is to get them to actually be able to do it.
- 8:56And do it for themselves.
- 8:58And maybe even teach somebody else.
- 9:00You know, there's this developing a program
- 9:02where the parents eventually are teaching their 5-year-old to wrestle,
- 9:05and the program is actually benefiting from a parent
- 9:09who actually taught their kids from 5 years old until they actually hit school.
- 9:13And then, you know, this raising these people to understand this
- 9:17and be able to do this, that was the goal.
- 9:19And again, there's two issues.
- 9:21There's the rules of the sport, the doctrines, belief systems about the sport,
- 9:25and then there's the methodology of getting people to actually live that out well.
- 9:30And so as I started to understand the church,
- 9:33in my mind, the doctrines were set.
- 9:37The belief system for all throughout history, orthodoxy, was set.
- 9:42I mean, most people I knew, though they might add things,
- 9:46you know, they certainly weren't taking away things.
- 9:49And so, for my way of thinking, I was like,
- 9:52I'm getting rid of everything we added.
- 9:54I want to get back to, you know, who was the master wrestler spiritually?
- 9:58It was Jesus, right?
- 9:59And I'm going to get back to the right doctrine.
- 10:02And everybody kind of has the right doctrine for the most part.
- 10:06The problem for me was we got to get to the method of how we pass on right doctrine.
- 10:11Because what was happening is, people could tell you,
- 10:14if they were to take a quiz, what the right doctrines were,
- 10:17but when it came to faith and practice, they weren't actually discipling you, buddy.
- 10:20They couldn't make disciples.
- 10:22They were spectators.
- 10:23Somewhere along the line, they went from being wrestlers who learned how to wrestle
- 10:27to spectators who watched somebody else wrestle.
- 10:31And so, for me, it was like, all right, if we're going to get this straightened out,
- 10:36we got two problems.
- 10:37On the left side, we got, what's the right doctrine?
- 10:40That's given. We don't need to worry about the left side.
- 10:42What we got to do is worry about the methodology, the right side.
- 10:46We got to teach people that they were saved to be a disciple maker
- 10:52who helped people come to know Christ.
- 10:54That they were not spectators.
- 10:56They were to be a part of the body of Christ.
- 10:58And we got to start teaching pastors that your job isn't to gather a crowd.
- 11:02You're an equipper of the saints.
- 11:04Winning is unleashing an army on a community,
- 11:07not gathering people out of a community so you can inform them about the things of God.
- 11:14No, your job was to get them involved so that they were not living vicariously through a pastor.
- 11:20They were living out the Christian life.
- 11:25And so I was like, okay, somehow we got the doctrines right.
- 11:29Now we got to get the methods right.
- 11:31And so we got to start going back through definitions.
- 11:33What is success?
- 11:35Disciples who can make disciples.
- 11:37What's the best method for that to happen?
- 11:40Well, that led to something you've all heard me say
- 11:43a thousand times if you've been around where I've been.
- 11:47It's you don't divorce the teachings of Jesus from the methods of Jesus
- 11:50and get the results of Jesus.
- 11:52So this assumes some things.
- 11:54That not only is there the teachings of Jesus, the doctrines,
- 11:57all the way, all scriptures God breathed.
- 11:59Old Testament, New Testament, same thing.
- 12:01Scripture, right?
- 12:03All scriptures God breathed.
- 12:04Okay, we got the teachings.
- 12:05And pretty much everybody has got the basis of that.
- 12:09Well, now we got to get to the greatest disciple maker in history was Jesus.
- 12:13And when he sent people out to make disciples,
- 12:15he didn't go do it any way you want.
- 12:17He meant go do what I just did with you.
- 12:19How did he do it?
- 12:20He did it in relationship.
- 12:22Now, in my mind, that's circling back to how did I get saved?
- 12:26It wasn't going to a church building,
- 12:28and it wasn't listening to my dad on the stage.
- 12:30It was my dad doing life with me, sharing the gospel with me,
- 12:34walking through with me, not only helping me find that I could be saved,
- 12:37but helping me find I have a place and a purpose,
- 12:39and how he walked me through that.
- 12:41And I'm going, oh, wait, Jesus did that.
- 12:43And so it came down to methods.
- 12:46In a sense, in a sense, it's like this.
- 12:51In wrestling, if I were to wrestle a match,
- 12:54I would, unless it was with a little kid or whatever,
- 12:57I wouldn't do so with my hand behind my back.
- 13:00I would use both hands.
- 13:03There's two sides.
- 13:04You have to defend both sides.
- 13:06If you're going to fight, you don't fight with one fist.
- 13:10And so methodology or, excuse me, doctrine was the left side.
- 13:14If you're going to win with an opponent who's any good at all,
- 13:18you're going to have to learn to use both hands.
- 13:20Would you agree with that?
- 13:22We are in a war.
- 13:23We don't wrestle against flesh and blood,
- 13:25but against the spiritual forces in the heavenly realms.
- 13:27And so for me, it was, okay, doctrine and method,
- 13:33having the right definitions of words equals a church
- 13:37that is something, not that people go to,
- 13:40but they're a part of something.
- 13:42There's a common mission.
- 13:43We're doing this together.
- 13:45We actually were saved.
- 13:47We're created anew in Christ Jesus for good works,
- 13:50which God planned for us to do before time began.
- 13:52And the equipers of the saints, equipping the saints
- 13:55so that they'll do their good work
- 13:57so that the body of Christ could be built up
- 13:59and so that we'd all reach unity of the faith.
- 14:01And so for the last 20 years, it's been doctrine,
- 14:06doctrine and method.
- 14:09I assumed doctrine.
- 14:11Here's the most disappointing thing
- 14:13that I'm dealing with right now.
- 14:15We assumed this and we started teaching this.
- 14:19Now everybody's going, it's the method, it's the method.
- 14:22And you know what?
- 14:24They've given up the left hand.
- 14:27Now it's, hey, for the sake of unity, anything goes.
- 14:38And people are actually quoting to me my stuff
- 14:41on relationship and methodology
- 14:44and maturity in Christ is to be in relationship.
- 14:47And it's almost like they're saying relationship at all costs.
- 14:51It's like, hey, we can be all unified together,
- 14:54but then we can decide that we're going to give up
- 14:58what God's word says.
- 14:59And they'll say, well, it's not the gospel.
- 15:01So why can't women be the preachers?
- 15:04Why can't women be the elders?
- 15:06I mean, come on, they believe in Jesus.
- 15:08And what we've done is we've forgotten that God's word,
- 15:14it makes us wise into salvation,
- 15:16but it's also the standard of righteousness.
- 15:19And God is the designer,
- 15:20the architect of every part of our life.
- 15:23And Jesus made it clear.
- 15:24If you hear my words and you put them into practice,
- 15:27that means you've allowed me to be the architect
- 15:29and I'm going to build your house on the rock.
- 15:31But if you hear my words
- 15:32and you don't put them into practice,
- 15:33it's like your life's going to be built on the sand.
- 15:36And so what we've done is we've allowed our culture,
- 15:40feminism, pressure, LBGTQ and whatever other,
- 15:46we've allowed ourselves to go back to, hey,
- 15:50winning is just sharing about Jesus
- 15:53and you just need to believe in Jesus.
- 15:54But we don't really have to agree with him
- 15:57on what he says in his word for 2000 years,
- 15:59how it's been understood.
- 16:01Everything's up in the air
- 16:02because now relationship's so important
- 16:05at the expense of truth and righteousness,
- 16:09as God defines it.
- 16:12And again, so now it was like, okay,
- 16:14we're fighting with this one, let's use this one.
- 16:16Well, now it's like, let's use this
- 16:17and let's drop this one.
- 16:18And you know what?
- 16:19The enemy is, he doesn't come at,
- 16:24it's like, what's the big deal?
- 16:26When we create a hermeneutical pathway
- 16:30that allows us to do something
- 16:33that makes us more popular with the world,
- 16:36do you not understand that you just created a pathway
- 16:39that you can, you take that scope in hunting,
- 16:42I create a scope, I can hit that target.
- 16:44I may not always shoot that target over there,
- 16:47but I could and I've created a scope
- 16:49and now I've got a hermeneutical pathway
- 16:51that I can attack this in anything else I choose to
- 16:55because I've created a way that I could be more popular
- 17:00and somehow I can gather more people
- 17:04at the expense of people's foundation
- 17:08in every part of their life.
- 17:11And so my warning to the church is this.
- 17:16God gave us his word
- 17:18and if he has something to say about something,
- 17:20he is the creator
- 17:21and he knows what he's talking about
- 17:23and to get it wrong actually costs us.
- 17:29Listen, trying to be popular in the world,
- 17:32Jesus told us we wouldn't be.
- 17:37Trying to make it so that there, you know, listen,
- 17:39the gospel in itself is offensive to unbelievers
- 17:42because there's one way to salvation.
- 17:44There's real heaven and hell.
- 17:45There is a judgment day.
- 17:47It's already unpopular.
- 17:52Why?
- 17:53What are we doing?
- 17:57This passage really sticks out to me
- 18:00and it's in, and I'll close with this.
- 18:05It's in Jeremiah chapter six
- 18:10and it says this.
- 18:14This is what the Lord says.
- 18:17Stand at the crossroads and look.
- 18:21Ask for the ancient paths.
- 18:24Ask where the good way is and walk in it
- 18:27and you will find rest for your souls.
- 18:31But you said we will not walk in it.
- 18:35I appointed watchmen over you
- 18:37and said listen to the sound of the trumpet
- 18:39but you said we will not listen.
- 18:42We live in a world that wants to hear
- 18:45what it wants to hear
- 18:48and we offer the truth of God's word
- 18:50given by the righteous one
- 18:52who every command he has ever given is for our good
- 18:56and to compromise means that there is weakness
- 19:00and contamination in whatever we compromise in.
- 19:06We are called on to be two-fisted fighters.
- 19:10Standing on God's word, using his methods,
- 19:14being about his business
- 19:16and then let the cards fall where they may.
- 19:21Our success isn't determined.
- 19:23I mean there's a lot of people
- 19:24who think they're successful
- 19:25that they'll find out they're not
- 19:26and there's a lot of people that will think
- 19:28that they weren't successful
- 19:29and on that day they will hear
- 19:30well done good and faithful servant
- 19:32and they will be.
- 19:33We let God do the deciding.
- 19:35We don't give in to the people.
- 19:37We follow King Jesus.
- 19:38We're responsible to him
- 19:40as shepherds and stewards of his flock.
- 19:45Two-fisted fighting.
- 19:47It's not one or the other.
- 19:48It's both and.
- 19:52Thanks.
