Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / The DiCecco Daily: Takeaways From Eagles Locker Room Cleanout
Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on? Everybody?
- 0:11Speaker 2: Welcome into another edition of the Checho Daily. It's Andrew
- 0:14Speaker 2: Decheco here, Eagles beat reporter for Inside the Birds dot Com,
- 0:18Speaker 2: and today was locker Cleanout, which for some teams occurs
- 0:21Speaker 2: earlier than usual, but for the foot off Eagles, it
- 0:24Speaker 2: took place on Monday, a day after they fell to
- 0:27Speaker 2: the San Francisco forty nine Ers twenty three to nineteen
- 0:30Speaker 2: in the Wildcard round of the NFL playoffs. And locker
- 0:34Speaker 2: clean out obviously symbolizes at the end of an NFL season,
- 0:38Speaker 2: but it also gives you a chance to talk to
- 0:41Speaker 2: a number of different players, some who are going to
- 0:44Speaker 2: be pending free agents, some who are coming off an injury,
- 0:48Speaker 2: and prominent members of the team as sort of an
- 0:51Speaker 2: end of the season conversation.
- 0:54Speaker 1: So you get a little bit of everything.
- 0:56Speaker 2: But I went to a number of different players who
- 0:59Speaker 2: I spoke a lot to this year, thanking them for
- 1:02Speaker 2: their time, their professionalism, and wishing them the best in
- 1:06Speaker 2: the offseason, especially if they're going to be a free agent,
- 1:09Speaker 2: and just some of those conversations I'll get to very quickly.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Josh Ushe He's a player that I've talked a lot
- 1:17Speaker 2: to this season. We talked about the power rush, which
- 1:21Speaker 2: is something he was working on, and he mentioned that,
- 1:25Speaker 2: you know, he appreciated those conversations that we had and
- 1:31Speaker 2: he is a consummate professional. I can't say anything otherwise.
- 1:36Speaker 2: He is just a true pro in every sense. I
- 1:39Speaker 2: am just sort of taken aback about how he took
- 1:42Speaker 2: his role that started the season where he was a
- 1:45Speaker 2: rotational player and then he didn't play at all. He
- 1:48Speaker 2: never sulked, he never wavered, He embraced whatever role that
- 1:53Speaker 2: he had and was positive behind the scenes. Said it
- 1:56Speaker 2: was the best locker room he's ever been a part of.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Isn't sure what the future holds. Says he could be here,
- 2:02Speaker 2: could be elsewhere, obviously, but he wants to get after
- 2:06Speaker 2: the quarterback again.
- 2:07Speaker 1: He made that clear.
- 2:09Speaker 2: But he was talking to me at first and then
- 2:11Speaker 2: a couple of other reporters and he just he just
- 2:15Speaker 2: gets it. I don't know how else to say it,
- 2:17Speaker 2: but he thanked all of us. He shook our hands
- 2:21Speaker 2: for our time this season, and we'll see what the
- 2:25Speaker 2: future holds for him. Johan Dobson's another player that I
- 2:28Speaker 2: spoke to and I asked him, I said, when you
- 2:30Speaker 2: look back on your Eagles career, aside from the super Bowl,
- 2:33Speaker 2: what's something that.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Is a memory that will stick with you forever?
- 2:37Speaker 2: And he said the relationships that you build, especially in
- 2:39Speaker 2: the wide receiver room, which are like a family. And
- 2:43Speaker 2: he says he had to gain a different type of
- 2:46Speaker 2: patience because there were tough times of not really being
- 2:49Speaker 2: able to maximize what he can do on the field,
- 2:54Speaker 2: and he's ready to go to a team that can
- 2:58Speaker 2: maximize his talent, whether that's here or whether that's elsewhere.
- 3:02Speaker 2: And he believes that he has a lot of good
- 3:04Speaker 2: football ahead of him. And I asked him, I said,
- 3:06Speaker 2: with that, what are some of the things you're looking
- 3:09Speaker 2: for in a potential suitor and he said fit, being
- 3:12Speaker 2: extremely valued, and it has to be a team that
- 3:14Speaker 2: has a good culture, because he said he's been places
- 3:16Speaker 2: where a play where they didn't have a good culture and.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Places where they have.
- 3:21Speaker 2: And so he mentioned that, but he also went circle
- 3:24Speaker 2: back to saying he wants to be extremely valued and
- 3:28Speaker 2: this is someone who he said, look, I believe that
- 3:31Speaker 2: I can help help a team win a lot of games,
- 3:34Speaker 2: and he believes his best football is ahead of him.
- 3:36Speaker 2: So I think Johan Dotson is an interesting player because
- 3:39Speaker 2: the Eagles traded for him. He was a household name.
- 3:42Speaker 2: He's been a top receiver everywhere he's gone. Had to
- 3:46Speaker 2: really embrace the patience aspect of it, and he said that,
- 3:50Speaker 2: you know, he had to gain a different type of
- 3:52Speaker 2: patience here, but he learned that he's patient and things
- 3:56Speaker 2: like that. So we'll see what the future holds for Johanna.
- 3:59Speaker 2: I have a feeling that he'll go to a team
- 4:01Speaker 2: that will utilize him more. And the Eagles have Darius
- 4:06Speaker 2: Cooper in the wings, who Johan Dotson spoke glowingly about.
- 4:09Speaker 2: They have Johnny Wilson coming back, and by the way,
- 4:12Speaker 2: Ben van sumer and after the game lauded Johnny Wilson
- 4:16Speaker 2: and said he doesn't really he doesn't know what people realize.
- 4:19Speaker 2: How good of a blocker. Johnny Wilson is. That big body,
- 4:23Speaker 2: physical type of player, and the Eagles offense certainly missed that.
- 4:26Speaker 1: But they'll have those two players back in the mix.
- 4:28Speaker 2: So when you look at all the free agents the
- 4:30Speaker 2: Eagles have, at least for me, doesn't seem likely that
- 4:33Speaker 2: Johan Dodson would be back, but it was good to
- 4:36Speaker 2: catch up with him during locker clean out. Braden Man's
- 4:39Speaker 2: also going to be a free agent, and he said
- 4:41Speaker 2: he hopes that he's back here in Philadelphia, but he's
- 4:44Speaker 2: getting ready for his offseason. Him and his wife are
- 4:47Speaker 2: expecting in March, which is amazing. That's great news. So
- 4:51Speaker 2: congratulations to him, and I just thanked him for his
- 4:55Speaker 2: time talking this year, and I've always enjoyed my conversations
- 4:59Speaker 2: with him. Nikobe Dean Nikcobe spoke after the game. He
- 5:03Speaker 2: spoke at his locker after everyone had gone away and
- 5:07Speaker 2: he was still cleaning things out of his locker.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I walked up to him, I shook his hand.
- 5:10Speaker 2: I said, hey, listen, I just want to, you know,
- 5:13Speaker 2: thank you for all of your time over the years.
- 5:15Speaker 2: It's been a pleasure covering you for four years. He's
- 5:19Speaker 2: another one consummate professional, great humanitarian and epitomizes the tough
- 5:24Speaker 2: detail togethered mantra the nick Sirianni pride himself and his
- 5:28Speaker 2: team on. And he said, I don't want to be
- 5:31Speaker 2: nowhere else, you know. I hope it's here and we'll
- 5:34Speaker 2: see what happens there with Nikobe Dean. Of course, they
- 5:36Speaker 2: have Jahad Campbell, who they drafted in the first round,
- 5:39Speaker 2: but that's going to be a really interesting one.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying

- 9:04Speaker 2: Caught up with Mac McWilliams before he left, thanking him
- 9:07Speaker 2: for making himself available every single week for the Rookie Diary,
- 9:10Speaker 2: and he said it kind of helped him along this season,
- 9:13Speaker 2: which made me feel good. And you know, he got
- 9:16Speaker 2: a chance to play in the postseason game, and he
- 9:18Speaker 2: got in the regular season finale. Those are building blocks
- 9:22Speaker 2: that I think he can use as a springboard towards
- 9:25Speaker 2: his second NFL season. And he's gonna take a little
- 9:28Speaker 2: bit of time. A lot of these guys are gonna
- 9:29Speaker 2: take a little bit of time. Look, it's been a grind,
- 9:31Speaker 2: but he said, we'll eventually get back after it with
- 9:34Speaker 2: the training. Tank Bigsby. I stopped Tank Bigsby when I
- 9:38Speaker 2: saw him, very briefly and again thanked him for his time.
- 9:42Speaker 2: I wrote a story about Tank and where he gets
- 9:45Speaker 2: his running style from. You can grab that on Inside
- 9:47Speaker 2: the Birds dot com. And that was something that I
- 9:51Speaker 2: was really appreciative of him making himself available for that
- 9:55Speaker 2: for two days in a row. Because I had follow
- 9:56Speaker 2: up questions and he's going to be a big time
- 10:00Speaker 2: player for this offense next season, working in tandem or
- 10:04Speaker 2: taking a back seat, of course, but also having probably
- 10:06Speaker 2: a larger role offensively behind Saquon Barkley, Obo Okoronkwell.
- 10:13Speaker 1: He tour his triceps in.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Week four and he was there in the locker room today,
- 10:20Speaker 2: said that he was starting to get back to normal
- 10:23Speaker 2: about within the past month. Talked to Nolan Smith and
- 10:26Speaker 2: Brandon Graham about their for insight on the injury and
- 10:31Speaker 2: how to recover from it and maybe some of the
- 10:32Speaker 2: things they would have done differently in their recovery process.
- 10:35Speaker 2: And he said he'll be training in the off season
- 10:38Speaker 2: and we'll see where things go. And Obo was somebody
- 10:42Speaker 2: who Eagles fans may not remember because he wasn't around
- 10:45Speaker 2: after four games. The season was over played in four
- 10:47Speaker 2: snaps in that game, finally gets an opportunity. But great guy,
- 10:52Speaker 2: really high character person, and I was glad that I
- 10:55Speaker 2: was able to catch him before he left. Brett Toth
- 11:00Speaker 2: walked over to Brett Toath, shook his hand and thanked
- 11:03Speaker 2: him again. And he and I have had a lot
- 11:05Speaker 2: of conversations this year, and you know, I said, looking
- 11:09Speaker 2: back on this season, what are your immediate takeaways when
- 11:13Speaker 2: you have a moment to reflect, And he said, I
- 11:15Speaker 2: wish I was a better guard so that I could
- 11:17Speaker 2: have given Landon some rest. You know, Brett's really tough
- 11:22Speaker 2: on himself. But I think we'll probably when he when
- 11:25Speaker 2: he does have a time to look back on it.
- 11:27Speaker 2: I have a feeling that he'll look back finally on
- 11:29Speaker 2: this season because I thought he made some big time
- 11:31Speaker 2: strides becoming the Eagle's top back up interior lineman, and
- 11:36Speaker 2: he has a lot to.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Be proud of.
- 11:38Speaker 2: He's also going to be a free agent, so we'll
- 11:40Speaker 2: see where that goes. I think he put a lot
- 11:42Speaker 2: of good things on tape and the opportunities that he
- 11:44Speaker 2: did have. So Brett was somebody who I talked a
- 11:47Speaker 2: lot to this season, and it was I was happy
- 11:50Speaker 2: that he was in the locker room because I was
- 11:53Speaker 2: able to show extend my gratitude for his availability and professionalism.
- 11:57Speaker 1: E J.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Jenkins another player who I've talked about before and just
- 12:03Speaker 2: catching up casually. You know, he's been taking up golfing,
- 12:06Speaker 2: he said when they went to tight End University.
- 12:08Speaker 1: EJ.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Grant, Calcata, Jack Stole, and I think Dallas Goddard. He
- 12:13Speaker 2: said they went golfing, and he said he's more just
- 12:16Speaker 2: putting right because he was trying to find his way.
- 12:19Speaker 2: But you know, he said that he's starting to take
- 12:21Speaker 2: up golfing. He's going to have a really busy offseason,
- 12:26Speaker 2: you know, just working hard. Talked about thinking about cutting
- 12:29Speaker 2: his weight to maybe two fifty five. That dropping five
- 12:33Speaker 2: pounds is going to help extend his career and take
- 12:36Speaker 2: some pressure off the knees. But he can still maintain
- 12:40Speaker 2: that level of physicality and strength. So ej is a
- 12:43Speaker 2: great guy. I've talked to him the last couple of years.
- 12:47Speaker 2: You may remember a story I wrote before last season.
- 12:50Speaker 2: It was in the off season about how he went
- 12:53Speaker 2: from a college wide receiver to NFL tight end.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Great story there. It was good to catch him.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Drew mcuba was another player who was in the locker room,
- 13:02Speaker 2: and he has still the walking boot he fractured. He
- 13:06Speaker 2: had a fractured fibula in that Dallas game in late November,
- 13:09Speaker 2: but said that, you know, he kind of expects to
- 13:12Speaker 2: return for spring workouts.
- 13:14Speaker 1: So positive news there. He's going to be part of
- 13:16Speaker 1: the future.
- 13:17Speaker 2: We'll see what happens with Reed blankenship of course, the
- 13:20Speaker 2: Kobe Dean's a big name. Jalen Phillips, who I also
- 13:23Speaker 2: was in on when he spoke in the scrum, I
- 13:25Speaker 2: haven't yet transcribed some of what he had to say,
- 13:28Speaker 2: but that sort of a synopsis of locker clean out.
- 13:33Speaker 2: It gives you know a different type of perspective and
- 13:37Speaker 2: you're able to kind of catch up and see some
- 13:40Speaker 2: of these guys before they break for the offseason, and
- 13:43Speaker 2: so it was it was good.
- 13:45Speaker 1: It was good to see a lot of them.
- 13:47Speaker 2: I wasn't able to catch up with Will Shipley or
- 13:50Speaker 2: Brittain Cubby, two players who have made themselves available all
- 13:53Speaker 2: season long, and I am.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Very appreciative of them doing that.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Jalen Hurt spoke about Kevin Petullo had said, it's too
- 14:01Speaker 2: soon to sort of muse about Kevin Petullo's status. We'll
- 14:07Speaker 2: probably learn more about it one way or the other
- 14:09Speaker 2: later this week, but that's just how my initial thoughts
- 14:12Speaker 2: coming off Locker Room clean Out. And we'll obviously have
- 14:16Speaker 2: all the pertinent Egles news for you on All the
- 14:19Speaker 2: Inside the Birds podcast, on Inside the Birds dot com,
- 14:22Speaker 2: and right here, of course, onto check Odaily.
- 14:25Speaker 1: This has been to check
- 14:26Speaker 2: Odaily I'm Andrew to check O and I'll catch you
- 14:28Speaker 2: on the next one.
