Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Addressing Obstacles, Difficulties and Resistances That Arise for the Spiritual Seeker

- 0:01Traditionally, spiritual paths have developed guidelines and
- 0:04practices that are applied to everyone as set practices.
- 0:09Thus, some people wind up learning particular forms of
- 0:13meditation or concentration, devotion or dedicated work, or
- 0:19they practice specific forms of Hatha yoga, pranayam, or other
- 0:24specialized approaches to gaining mastery over the various
- 0:28aspects of their being. The body, the life energy, the
- 0:32mind, while developing the soul entity, the psychic being, and
- 0:38coming into contact with the higher planes of existence
- 0:41beyond the mind. While as a general protocol this
- 0:45may yield success, the process does not take into account the
- 0:49variations that can occur between individuals as to their
- 0:54nature, temperament, habits, cultural background, variations
- 1:00due to the constant fluctuations of the gunas, and even prior
- 1:05life developments that impact the current incarnation.
- 1:10They also do not take into account the need to focus on
- 1:13different aspects of the being and different issues, obstacles
- 1:18or resistances that occur at various times in one
- 1:23individual's spiritual development.
- 1:27All of these factors lead to a wide divergent in terms of the
- 1:30way any individual needs to respond over time to
- 1:34difficulties and obstacles that arise.
- 1:39Srioro Bindo and the Mother take a more granular view of the
- 1:43matter and work to have the seeker understand the various
- 1:47sources of the resistance they are facing and then have them
- 1:51apply appropriate methods to resolve those issues at their
- 1:55source. This means that the same
- 1:58individual, at various times of their spiritual practice, may
- 2:04undertake A strict meditation form, may at another time move
- 2:09into a devotional practice, and may take up one or another of
- 2:13the yogic forms that are the hallmark of one path or another
- 2:18for a period of time and for a specific intention and purpose.
- 2:24In this way they will systematically address both the
- 2:28needs of their own nature and the promptings of the spiritual
- 2:32aspiration within them with insight, flexibility and
- 2:38dedication. The transformation of human
- 2:42nature is not an objective to be taken up lightly.
- 2:45It is not something that occurs overnight, but requires patient,
- 2:51persistent and dedicated effort over time.
- 2:55The physical nature, the vital nature, the mental nature, all
- 3:00have their own habitual patterns, grooves of response
- 3:05that need to be addressed if any true and lasting change is to
- 3:09take place. Trying to change human nature
- 3:13has been likened to trying to straighten out a dog's tail.
- 3:17It seems to always go back to its natural condition.
- 3:22This however is a short sighted view rooted in the ego
- 3:25personality. Over a span of what we may call
- 3:30evolutionary time, Human nature can and does change.
- 3:36Just as we can see mutations occur from one generation to
- 3:39another in the physical being. The human individual today is
- 3:44not quite the same as the human being 10,000 years ago.
- 3:49We can expect further transformative change to
- 3:52actually speed up now that many people are putting a conscious
- 3:56focus and effort into that process.
- 4:01What might otherwise take millennia may now be looked at
- 4:04in terms of centuries beyond an individual lifetime.
- 4:09Yes, but that does not mean that each individual should not
- 4:13become part of the process and the change, and it does not mean
- 4:18that all of the effort is without interim progress that
- 4:21can become noticeable even within a single lifetime,
- 4:28Fiorabindo writes. Quote.
- 4:30There cannot be any high endeavour, least of all in the
- 4:34spiritual field, which does not raise or encounter grave
- 4:38obstacles of a very persistent character.
- 4:42These are both internal and external, and although in the
- 4:47large they are fundamentally the same for all, there may be a
- 4:51great difference in the distribution of their stress or
- 4:55the outward form they take. Yoga has always its
- 5:00difficulties, whatever yoga it may be.
- 5:03Moreover, it acts in a different way on different seekers.
- 5:08Some have to overcome the difficulties of their nature
- 5:11first before they get any experiences to speak of.
- 5:16Others get a splendid beginning and all the difficulties
- 5:19afterwards. Others go on for a long time,
- 5:23having alternate risings to the top of the wave, and then a
- 5:27descent into the gulfs, and so on till the difficulty is worked
- 5:32out. Others have a smooth path, which
- 5:36does not mean that they have no difficulties.
- 5:39They have plenty, but they do not care a straw for them
- 5:43because they feel that the Divine will help them to the
- 5:46goal or that He is with them even when they do not feel Him.
- 5:51Their faith makes them imperturbable.
