- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hey team, welcome to the show. Thanks for being here today.
- 0:25In this episode, I want to talk to you about something that we
- 0:28don't give enough credit to in our lives, especially as adults,
- 0:32and that's fun. I'm also bringing up this
- 0:35episode today because I've noticed, especially in the last
- 0:39couple years in my life, that prioritizing fun and trying to
- 0:44set the stage for feeling joy in my life has changed my life.
- 0:48And I think it's a very important conversation,
- 0:51especially in this day and age when people are talking about
- 0:56the world feeling very heavy. There's not a lot of good news
- 0:59on the news. Social media can be very
- 1:02disheartening. So to focus on how to
- 1:06purposefully, intentionally create joy in my life and have
- 1:10fun in my life has become a very powerful tool to stave off some
- 1:14of that like hard heaviness that a lot of people are feeling.
- 1:18I'm also really noticing it in my clients.
- 1:20Most every client in the last month has come to at least one
- 1:25session feeling a little heavy. And it makes sense.
- 1:28There is a lot going on in the world.
- 1:30There are a lot of responsibilities and obligations
- 1:32that we have as adults, and I think it just weighs on us.
- 1:36And so to think about an antidote to some of that fun and
- 1:41joy and play automatically come to mind.
- 1:43It's been really, really powerful for us.
- 1:45Like I said, my wife and I trying to infuse that into our
- 1:49lives and so I think it merits a conversation and I hope it feels
- 1:52helpful. Today.
- 1:54There's a quote by George Bernard Shaw and he says we
- 1:58don't stop playing because we grow old.
- 2:00We grow old because we stopped playing.
- 2:02You know, there's research out there that says that adults
- 2:05laugh on average 15 to 17 times a day.
- 2:08But some of the research has shown that it can be as low as 4
- 2:12times a day, which I think is pretty depressing.
- 2:16And then I looked up how often children laugh in a day, and
- 2:19they quoted as being somewhere around 300 times a day.
- 2:23Although there's some stuff out there that says that that's an
- 2:25urban myth, so I don't know the exact number.
- 2:27But regardless, we know that children and young adults laugh
- 2:31a lot more, a hell of a lot more than we as adults do.
- 2:35And here's the catch. Most of us aren't prioritizing
- 2:39fun and play. You know, somewhere along the
- 2:42way, fun just got pushed to the sidelines and I want to talk
- 2:47about why we stopped having fun and why it's actually crucial.
- 2:50It's not optional. It's crucial for both our health
- 2:54and our relationships and our success in life.
- 2:57You know, if you think back to being a kid, fun was pretty
- 3:01automatic. Play was the job and everything
- 3:05was an adventure. I'm, I think back to my
- 3:06childhood days and it feels like all we did was play outside.
- 3:11All we did was play sports in the street and work on our tree
- 3:14house and run around with popsicles in her hands.
- 3:17And I'm sure that wasn't the case, but that feels like all
- 3:21there was when I think back to when I was little.
- 3:24And as we get older, it's very clear that we start to absorb
- 3:28some messages. Messages like fun is extra.
- 3:33It's what you get to do if everything else is done.
- 3:36Fun is something you earn after the hard work.
- 3:38Fun is irresponsible or childish.
- 3:41We feel guilt about having fun because maybe others aren't
- 3:44having very much fun in their life.
- 3:46There's a perception that fun is inappropriate, perhaps because
- 3:51there's so much heaviness in the world and always has been.
- 3:55But, you know, I think we can just see so much of it right
- 3:57now. And also, there seems to be a
- 4:00sense of a lack of time, a lack of time to be able to have fun
- 4:04in our lives, probably because our commitments to others and
- 4:08our obligations and our responsibilities won't really
- 4:10allow for it. It doesn't feel like there is
- 4:12enough time. So what ends up happening is
- 4:15we're trading play for productivity and achievement.
- 4:18You know, we schedule, we grind, we hustle every week, we fill
- 4:21our calendars with obligations. And the first thing to get
- 4:24pushed off the list is joy. And I know this to be true
- 4:27because I've seen this in my own life.
- 4:29I can tend to get into that mode where I'm a little serious, I'm
- 4:33focused on work, I'm focused on the obligations and the
- 4:36responsibilities, and I'm forgetting to loosen up.
- 4:39I'm forgetting to enjoy every single day.
- 4:42And I've gotten a lot better about it.
- 4:44But I've had to have these reminders.
- 4:47And then when you add the pressures of adulthood,
- 4:50mortgages and careers and kids and all those responsibilities,
- 4:54it's really no wonder that fun becomes more rare.
- 4:57Many people can't answer the question, what do you do for
- 5:00fun? It's not top of mind and a lot
- 5:03of times they're not even doing anything for fun.
- 5:05And if you think about when you meet someone for the first time,
- 5:09they very rarely ask you what you do for fun.
- 5:11It's only what do you do and it's in reference to the job.
- 5:15But here's the problem. Fun isn't just nice to have.
- 5:18It's not just a luxury, it's essential for our health.
- 5:21It improves our relationships. It helps us feel more successful
- 5:26at the things that we do in life.
- 5:27And let's break that down a little bit.
- 5:29Let's first talk about the health aspect.
- 5:32When you have fun, your body releases endorphins and
- 5:35dopamine. Those feel good chemicals.
- 5:38Fun lowers stress hormones, it relaxes your nervous system, and
- 5:42it actually strengthens your immune system.
- 5:44When we have fun, when we engage in play, it lights up parts of
- 5:47our brain that fuel creativity and problem solving.
- 5:51That's why you often get your best ideas when you're relaxed
- 5:54or you're laughing or you're hanging out with friends.
- 5:56Not when you're stressed at your desk.
- 5:59Something I've noticed in myself and I see in a lot of people is
- 6:03fun also restores energy. If you are constantly exhausted
- 6:06and might not be that you're doing too much, it might be
- 6:08because you're not doing enough of what lights you up.
- 6:11You're constantly in the hustle and grind and you're not doing
- 6:14anything that brings you any joy.
- 6:16If you look up all the benefits of having fun in life, you'll
- 6:18see a long list. But the bottom line is that fun
- 6:21is not a distraction from health.
- 6:23Fun is health, especially when it comes to our mental health.
- 6:26I found this to be very true for myself, especially in the last
- 6:30nine months as I'm going through treatment for breast cancer.
- 6:33When I infuse fun into my life, I do better.
- 6:37It has definitely helped me get through the treatments and
- 6:41recently having a double mastectomy surgery.
- 6:43We know that this stuff can be a little bit heavy.
- 6:46You might not be physically feeling your best, but in terms
- 6:48of the mental health piece, infusing fun and play into my
- 6:51life has made a massive difference.
- 6:54I call it my carrots in reference to the carrot that you
- 6:57would put in front of a horse to get it to move.
- 7:00I plan fun events purposefully in my life so that it can be the
- 7:05carrot that keeps me going. And it's very effective.
- 7:07It works very well. If you think about how you're
- 7:11feeling mentally and emotionally and even physically, and then
- 7:14also look at the amount of fun and play that you have in your
- 7:17life. I wonder if you could see any
- 7:19correlation there and if you might see a need to infuse a
- 7:21little bit more of that into your schedule.
- 7:24Now, let's think about how fun and play affect relationships
- 7:29when you have more fun and improves your relationships.
- 7:32We know this both at work and just in general in life.
- 7:36I mean, think about the times when you went to a concert with
- 7:40people or did a a weekend trip with friends and family, maybe
- 7:44over New Year's or Thanksgiving or just in the summer.
- 7:46If you went camping for the weekend with people, think about
- 7:49how you feel after that. You feel closer to those people
- 7:53afterwards, don't you? I remember Leanne and I went to
- 7:57a weekend long music festival 2 years ago with a lot of people
- 8:01we didn't know very well, but we spent the whole weekend with
- 8:03them. We had two straight days of
- 8:05having so much fun together, playing and laughing and just
- 8:08having a blast and it led to these people becoming some of
- 8:11our best friends. Another example that you could
- 8:15think about is team building. Team building retreats that you
- 8:18might do at work or like daily excursions, things that you do
- 8:21with colleagues, the obstacle courses, you guys remember
- 8:24those. When you engage in that kind of
- 8:27play and fun, it gives you a break from the daily routine and
- 8:30you get to go have some fun together.
- 8:32You walk away feeling a little closer to your team.
- 8:36Those experiences help us build trust and improve communication.
- 8:40They give us an opportunity to connect and be creative
- 8:42together. We can laugh together and
- 8:45overall it gives our brain the message we are alike.
- 8:47We share values, and so it increases your connection to
- 8:50those people. You've probably heard of the
- 8:52Gottmans before, Doctor John and Julie Gottman.
- 8:56They are relationship experts. They have the Gottman Research
- 8:59Institute up in Seattle, and they've been studying happy and
- 9:03unhappy couples for years. They have a ton of books written
- 9:05about it. But what they found is that
- 9:07couples who are happy know how to have fun together.
- 9:12And so I often think to myself, am I having enough fun with my
- 9:15wife? Am I having enough fun with my
- 9:16kids? Am I having enough fun in my
- 9:18life in general so that I can show up well for them, so I
- 9:21could show up well for my friends and my family?
- 9:24It's something that I truly try to keep a pulse on.
- 9:28So we know fun makes you healthier.
- 9:30We know that it improves your relationships.
- 9:32It also makes you more successful at the things that
- 9:35you pursue in your life. And just think about it, people
- 9:38who enjoy what they do, they attract other people, they have
- 9:43better relationships, they bring more energy to their work,
- 9:46they're more resilient when things get hard because there's
- 9:50joy that can fuel you, not just willpower or discipline.
- 9:54Fun creates balance. So without fun, success can
- 9:59start to feel hollow. Like, what am I doing this for?
- 10:01Am I really getting what I want in life?
- 10:04You might reach a goal, a milestone that you've been
- 10:06working for for a long time. But if you burned out joy along
- 10:11the way, often people will get there and say, I'm not really
- 10:14experiencing the feelings that I thought I would feel at the end
- 10:16of this. Was it really worth it?
- 10:19Having fun also keeps us adaptable because play teaches
- 10:23us how to experiment and to take risks, to learn without having
- 10:26that fear of failure. It's light, it's supposed to be,
- 10:29it's fun, right? And those are the same skills
- 10:32that you need in leadership or running a business and just life
- 10:36in general. So when you think about success,
- 10:39fun really isn't the opposite of success.
- 10:41You're not sacrificing success when you're pursuing fun.
- 10:45Fun is a high frequency activity and it keeps you high frequency.
- 10:49When you're high frequency, lots of things come to meet you that
- 10:53are high frequency. So the question that I asked
- 10:56myself is how do I bring fun into my life daily, weekly,
- 11:01whatever it might be? And I think about these things
- 11:03often because sometimes I need to remind myself to loosen up a
- 11:07little bit. So here's a couple ideas that
- 11:09have helped me. The first thing I do is ask
- 11:12myself, how could I make this fun?
- 11:14So I redefine it because it doesn't have to be a big event
- 11:18or a huge vacation to make it worthwhile.
- 11:21Fun can just be dancing in the kitchen with my wife, it can be
- 11:24playing a game with my kids, it can be going for a spontaneous
- 11:28road trip, it can be trying something new.
- 11:31There's so many different ways to infuse fun into your life
- 11:33every single day. You just have to look for it.
- 11:36The second thing that I do that is very helpful is to schedule
- 11:40it because if I don't make space for fun, it doesn't happen as
- 11:44often. I have to put it on the calendar
- 11:46in the same way that I do meetings or workouts or other
- 11:49things that are important to me. Plan and schedule your fun.
- 11:54And the last thing I think about is to give myself permission.
- 11:57We just did a podcast episode earlier this week about giving
- 12:00yourself permission to do the things you want to do.
- 12:03Fun is no different. I have to give myself permission
- 12:07to play and have fun and really enjoy life because fun is not
- 12:12frivolous. It's not a waste of time.
- 12:15It's actually such good fuel for us.
- 12:18To give yourself permission reminds you that you don't need
- 12:20to earn it. It is your innate right, and it
- 12:24makes life better when you can experience it.
- 12:27So the take away here is that fun is not optional.
- 12:30It's not childish. It's not irresponsible.
- 12:33It's medicine. Fun is medicine for you.
- 12:36It is energy. It feels like the spark that
- 12:40makes life beautiful. It makes life worth living.
- 12:42We all want to live a joyful, fulfilled life, so don't wait
- 12:47for permission from anybody. Go laugh, go play, go create,
- 12:51have fun because it truly is what makes life so beautiful and
- 12:55so worthwhile. And I think we could all use a
- 12:57lot more of it. I hope this helps.
- 13:00I hope this spurs on some insights.
