- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is Monday.
- 0:15It's the 6th of October. Great to have your company.
- 0:18Thank you for inviting me into the beginning of your week as we
- 0:22are going to open up their Bibles to the book of Romans and
- 0:27continue reading through this letter that Paul is writing to
- 0:30this church, trying to get their heads around how do we make
- 0:34peace with Jews and Gentiles coming together, these two
- 0:38worlds colliding and trying to coexist in this new Christian
- 0:42Church. And we probably don't need to
- 0:44think too much about Jew and Gentile, but we can think about
- 0:47those who are in and those who are out, those who might
- 0:51traditionally be thought of as church kind of people and those
- 0:54who don't maybe fit that mould. And Paul is writing about how
- 0:59under this new church, it's not about the old ways, but it's
- 1:03about the new ways and trying to unpack what that looks like.
- 1:07So how about let us dive into this and as we do, Holy Spirit,
- 1:10open up our hearts and teach us your ways and your truths as we
- 1:15read this. Your inspired word as written in
- 1:19Romans chapter 3. Then what's the advantage of
- 1:32being a Jew? Is there any value in the
- 1:34ceremony of circumcision? Yes, there are great benefits.
- 1:39First of all, the Jews were entrusted with the whole
- 1:42revelation of God. True, some of them were
- 1:45unfaithful. But just because they were
- 1:47unfaithful, does that mean God will be unfaithful?
- 1:50Of course not. Even if everyone else is a liar,
- 1:54God is true, as the Scriptures say about Him.
- 1:58You will be proved right in what you say, and you will win your
- 2:02case in court. But some of you might say our
- 2:07sinfulness serves a good purpose, for it helps people see
- 2:10how righteous God is. Isn't it unfair, then, for him
- 2:14to punish us? This is merely a human point of
- 2:18view. Of course not.
- 2:20If God were not entirely fair, how would he be qualified to
- 2:23judge the world? But some might still argue, how
- 2:27can God condemn me as a Sinner if my dishonesty highlights his
- 2:31truthfulness and brings him more glory?
- 2:35And some people even slander us by claiming that we say the more
- 2:39we sin, the better it is. Those who say such things
- 2:43deserve to be condemned. Well then, should we conclude
- 2:48that we Jews are better than others?
- 2:50No, not at all, for we have already shown that all people,
- 2:54whether Jews or Gentiles, are under the power of sin.
- 2:58As the Scriptures say. No one is righteous, not even
- 3:03one. No one is truly wise.
- 3:06No one is seeking God. All have turned away.
- 3:09All have become useless. No one does good, not a single
- 3:14one. Their talk is foul, like the
- 3:17stench from an open grave. Their tongues are filled with
- 3:21lies. Snake venom drips from their
- 3:24lips. Their mouths are full of cursing
- 3:26and bitterness. They rush to commit murder.
- 3:29Destruction and misery always follow them.
- 3:32They don't know where to find peace.
- 3:35They have No Fear of God at all. Obviously, the law replies to
- 3:41those to whom it was given for. Its purpose is to keep people
- 3:45from having excuses and to show that the entire world is guilty
- 3:49before God, for no one can ever be made right with God by doing
- 3:53what the Law commands. The Law simply shows us how
- 3:57sinful we are. But now God has shown us a way
- 4:01to be made right with Him without keeping the requirements
- 4:04of the Law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the
- 4:08prophets long ago. We are made right with God by
- 4:12placing our faith in Jesus Christ, and this is true for
- 4:17everyone who believes, no matter who we are, For everyone has
- 4:21sinned. We all fall short of God's
- 4:23glorious standard. Yet God in His grace freely
- 4:29makes us right in His sight. He did this through Christ Jesus
- 4:34when He freed us from the penalty of our sins, for God
- 4:38presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin.
- 4:42People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus
- 4:45sacrificed His life shedding His blood.
- 4:49This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when He held back
- 4:52and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for He was
- 4:56looking ahead and including them in what He would do in this
- 5:00present time. God did this to demonstrate His
- 5:04righteousness, for He Himself is fair and just, and He makes
- 5:10sinners right in His sight when they believe in Jesus.
- 5:14Can we boast then that we have done anything to be accepted by
- 5:18God? No, because our acquittal is not
- 5:22based on obeying the law, it is based on faith.
- 5:27So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying
- 5:31the Law. After all, is God the God of the
- 5:34Jews only? Isn't He the God of the
- 5:37Gentiles? Of course he is.
- 5:39There is only one God, and He makes people right with himself
- 5:43only by faith, whether they're Jews or Gentiles.
- 5:47Well then, if we emphasise faith, does this mean that we
- 5:51can forget about the Law? Of course not.
- 5:54In fact, only when we have faith do we truly fulfil the Law.
- 6:10Oh Father, it is you and it is your love for us and Your
- 6:14provision for us through Jesus that makes us right with you.
- 6:22If we for one second are confused and we think that you,
- 6:26Father, are this angry God sitting on your throne in
- 6:29judgement of us, let these words of Paul ring in our ears.
- 6:35That it was your plan forever ago to save us.
- 6:39Not by forcing us to live a certain way, but by Jesus
- 6:44sacrificing himself for us to make us whole in your sight.
- 6:49That we can come to you, our loving Father, and be restored.
- 6:56And that now that we have this faith in Jesus that you have
- 7:00given us, even that is a gift from You.
- 7:03We are made right and we are made righteous in your sight and
- 7:10that saved and whole, we can even be inspired to live
- 7:14according to the way that you want us to live because we know
- 7:17that out of love you have made this better way.
- 7:21So we just come before you, Jesus, and we trust in you and
- 7:27we believe in you, and we accept this incredible gift that you
- 7:31give us, this gift of your sacrifice.
- 7:35And we know that it's in this faith that we are made right.
- 7:39Ah, thank you, God for your great love for us.
- 7:44We just praise you and pray all of this in your precious name,
- 7:47Jesus, Amen.
