- 1:29.com, what are you waiting for?
- 1:30Go check that out after the show is
- 1:32over, not now.
- 1:34All right, everyone.
- 1:35So welcome, yes, welcome to the ever-popular
- 1:38inspirations for your life show.
- 1:40I'm John C.
- 1:41Morley.
- 1:42I'm a serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video
- 1:44producer, podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, a graduate
- 1:48student at Montclair State University, passionate lifelong learner,
- 1:51and so grateful now to be a published
- 1:54author.
- 1:55Ladies and gentlemen, today is day seven.
- 1:58We are wrapping up this amazing master topic
- 2:03that we started.
- 2:04Your creativity isn't gone.
- 2:08You just stopped using it.
- 2:09Series five, show number 39, and you know
- 2:13we start on Saturday.
- 2:13We roll all the way through the week,
- 2:15and we finish up on, yes, today, a
- 2:19Friday.
- 2:20But don't worry, tomorrow we're going to have
- 2:22a whole new master topic starting off on
- 2:26Saturday, so it will be great to have
- 2:28that.
- 2:29So let's get right into this, shall we?
- 2:31All right.
- 2:32Number one, creativity weakens when you stop exercising.
- 2:37You know what I want to equate this
- 2:39to?
- 2:39Have you ever done exercises before?
- 2:41I'm sure a lot of you have, okay?
- 2:44When you stop exercising, you lose the benefit
- 2:48of it, right?
- 2:49Now, maybe not immediately, but you do lose
- 2:51the benefits of exercising.
- 2:55Another one that comes to mind, many of
- 2:57you know that I broke my tib and
- 2:59fib 10 years ago, and so I did
- 3:02it without surgery.
- 3:03That's a whole other story for another day.
- 3:04You can read my book, Adrena Driven.
- 3:08What I want to say is that when
- 3:10the leg was in the cast from, like,
- 3:12February 28th to, like, June 12th, it atrophied.
- 3:17And so when we say something atrophied, it
- 3:21basically, it becomes affected, right?
- 3:27Tissues in the organs basically get kind of
- 3:30arrested, and they can't move so well.
- 3:34They become diminished.
- 3:35The strength just kind of, like, just disappears.
- 3:40And, you know, if somebody said to me,
- 3:41John, you know, that's going to happen, I
- 3:43would never believe them.
- 3:44But getting that cast off and not being
- 3:48able to fully move the foot and that
- 3:51leg very well for, I'm going to say,
- 3:55a few days, I could get around, but
- 3:59I was not able to use it the
- 4:02way I did prior to the cast going
- 4:05on, prior to me breaking my tib and
- 4:08fib.
- 4:08So that's an important point, guys, is that
- 4:11creativity will weaken when you stop using it.
- 4:16So we're talking about, you know, ideas you're
- 4:19coming up with.
- 4:20We're talking about things for exercise.
- 4:23We're talking about things for motivation, right?
- 4:27When you lose it, you lose it.
- 4:33When you don't use it, you lose it,
- 4:36right?
- 4:36And things just kind of dwindle, right?
- 4:40And they decline.
- 4:43And of course, you can get it back,
- 4:45but it's harder to get the energy, the
- 4:48lifeblood back into, you know, your healthy tissue.
- 4:52Number two, guys, you haven't lost creativity just
- 4:56because you feel stuck.
- 4:59So this one gets a lot of people.
- 5:02I'm feeling stuck right now.
- 5:04What do I do?
- 5:05What am I supposed to do?
- 5:07And I think what I'm supposed to do
- 5:09is say, I can do this, okay?
- 5:17I think a lot of people, they get
- 5:20stuck because they don't know where to go.
- 5:25They don't know where to turn, okay?
- 5:28They just don't know where to go.
- 5:32And I know a lot of you out
- 5:34there are saying, hey, John, this is great,
- 5:36but I don't really know how to move.
- 5:41When someone says they're stuck, we're not talking
- 5:45about a car that suddenly is stuck because,
- 5:50you know, something's wedging it.
- 5:52We're talking about a condition.
- 5:55It could be physical, it could be mental,
- 5:57it could be spiritual.
- 5:58And this is holding us back from being
- 6:02all that we can be.
- 6:05And the more that somebody strokes it and
- 6:08basically says, yeah, you're definitely going down that
- 6:11path, you agree with it.
- 6:14And it just confirms that you are getting
- 6:20further away, that you are stuck.
- 6:25But again, you haven't lost creativity just because
- 6:28you're stuck.
- 6:28So when you're stuck, I want to think
- 6:31of being stuck as a writer's block.
- 6:33Has anybody ever had writer's block?
- 6:34You know, what is writer's block?
- 6:37We've all had it before.
- 6:40Writer's block happens when, you know, the teacher,
- 6:43professors ask you to write something on demand,
- 6:45and that can be stressful.
- 6:48Later on, I've learned that you have to
- 6:49just come back to it when you're ready.
- 6:52Staring at a blank page or a screen,
- 6:54you sit and you wait for words that
- 6:56do not seem to come.
- 6:58You feel like your ideas are bad or
- 7:00worthless.
- 7:01You get a mental freeze, right?
- 7:04Wanting the first sentence to be flawless.
- 7:06Don't worry about the first sentence being flawless.
- 7:07You're probably going to change it anyway.
- 7:09Worrying that others will judge your work.
- 7:11Who cares?
- 7:12What are they doing?
- 7:14Not knowing what happens next in your story
- 7:16or argument.
- 7:17Stress from everyday life or a noisy environment.
- 7:21How do you beat it?
- 7:22Just write badly on purpose.
- 7:24Give yourself permission to write a messy first
- 7:26draft, and you can fix it later.
- 7:30You could try free writing.
- 7:32Write anything nonstop for 10 minutes without stopping
- 7:34to edit.
- 7:35Change your spot.
- 7:36Move to a new room or a coffee
- 7:38shop to reset your brain.
- 7:41Set tiny goals.
- 7:42Aim to write just one single sentence.
- 7:47That's how it works.
- 7:49Number three, guys.
- 7:50Start using your imagination again.
- 7:52You know, when people are younger, I feel
- 7:55that everyone used their imagination because they didn't
- 7:58put limitations on themselves, right?
- 8:00They didn't put those blockers in, right?
- 8:05That's really what happens.
- 8:07And those blockers keep us from doing what
- 8:11we need to do.
- 8:11But they are a, I'm going to call
- 8:19it a condition that we have, that we've
- 8:25put there.
- 8:27There's nothing really there blocking us, except the
- 8:31block that we physically created.
- 8:33So if we take away the block, we
- 8:36take away the belief, suddenly we can do
- 8:43it.
- 8:44Suddenly.
- 8:47But so many people go through all this
- 8:48stuff and they're like wondering, what am I
- 8:50doing?
- 8:50What am I doing?
- 8:51Why can't I move forward?
- 8:52I'm stuck.
- 8:53How do I get out?
- 8:54Right?
- 8:54It's not like being stuck when you're in
- 8:57traffic and nobody's moving.
- 8:58That's different.
- 9:00Right?
- 9:01It's not like that.
- 9:04It's not like that at all.
- 9:10But it's different.
- 9:16It's different.
- 9:17And the difference says to us, you can
- 9:23do this, right?
- 9:27So use your imagination.
- 9:29Don't worry if it doesn't work right.
- 9:32It's not going to work right.
- 9:34Your imagination is a muscle.
- 9:35So you've got to exercise it, right?
- 9:37But don't give up just because it's not
- 9:39working for you right away, right?
- 9:42Number four, create something small today.
- 9:47Everybody I talk to wants to create this
- 9:49grandiose thing, but they don't think about something
- 9:52small.
- 9:54Why?
- 9:56Because they feel everything has to be big.
- 9:59If it's not big, then they can't go
- 10:02anywhere.
- 10:02They can't do anything.
- 10:06That's a big problem, guys.
- 10:08It's a huge problem.
- 10:10But the problem is all caused because of
- 10:14what's in someone's mind.
- 10:20So what's small?
- 10:21Something small could just be creating an act
- 10:25of gratitude.
- 10:26It could be making yourself a sandwich, breakfast.
- 10:32It could be creating some space for you
- 10:37to just breathe and live and enjoy life.
- 10:43Another thing I want to tell you is
- 10:44stop waiting for inspiration to arrive first.
- 10:48What I've found is that inspiration doesn't just
- 10:51show up.
- 10:53No.
- 10:55When you believe you have inspiration, that's when
- 10:59it changes.
- 11:00But it does not change immediately.
- 11:06It does not change immediately.
- 11:08And I think that's something that caused a
- 11:10lot of people to dig their heels in
- 11:16the ground.
- 11:17Like they don't want to move.
- 11:18This is the way it's got to be.
- 11:20Use the imagination.
- 11:22Stop waiting for inspiration to arrive.
- 11:25Because if you wait for it, you don't
- 11:28get that epiphany.
- 11:29You're just like not going to move.
- 11:30So move as if you have inspiration, and
- 11:32the inspiration will find you.
- 11:34Number six, action can generate inspiration.
- 11:40Yes, action.
- 11:41Act as though you have it and you'll
- 11:44get it.
- 11:45Your body in motion is very unique.
- 11:51So I want to share something that I
- 11:55think I've shared a while ago.
- 11:57If you're in a great mood, okay, you're
- 11:59standing in a great mood, and you're standing
- 12:00a certain way.
- 12:02And I say, don't move, okay?
- 12:04And I say stay exactly the way you
- 12:06are, same body position, posture, et cetera.
- 12:10And I say, now try to become angry.
- 12:13Don't move.
- 12:15You can't become angry.
- 12:18You can't.
- 12:19Now, if I ask you to get angry,
- 12:22and I ask you to get happy, I
- 12:26can't.
- 12:28Your body controls that.
- 12:31So our body language is not just for
- 12:35other people.
- 12:35It actually affects our states.
- 12:42That's another important thing, okay?
- 12:45Number seven, creativity becomes easier through repetition.
- 12:50It's that muscle, guys.
- 12:52It's the muscle that we can keep rebuilding
- 12:54and rebuilding and rebuilding.
- 13:01Number eight, make creating part of your routine.
- 13:10Don't expect perfection.
- 13:14Just what I like to say is creatively
- 13:16play.
- 13:20Things work out really well in business when
- 13:23I creatively play.
- 13:24When I stressed about things, it's like they're
- 13:27never going to get done.
- 13:27I say, let me just try this.
- 13:29Let me just see how this is going
- 13:30to fit in there, and it works really
- 13:33well.
- 13:34So make creating part of your routine.
- 13:37Number nine, give yourself regular time to experiment.
- 13:41You know, you could put more time on
- 13:42your calendar.
- 13:43I don't care what you want to do,
- 13:44but I want you to be committed to
- 13:48doing this.
- 13:52Can you do that?
- 13:54Be committed to doing it, and when you're
- 13:55committed to doing it, your life is going
- 13:58to change, not overnight.
- 14:01So let me be clear about that.
- 14:03Number 10, protect your curiosity as you get
- 14:06older.
- 14:06So as you get older, a lot of
- 14:08people say, you know what?
- 14:09I know how that works.
- 14:10I got the whole thing.
- 14:11I got it all figured out.
- 14:12I'm glad you got it all figured out.
- 14:15But the fact that you have it all
- 14:17figured out, you're crippling yourself from getting to
- 14:22another success or to your first success.
- 14:27So that's a real important thing.
- 14:29Protect the curiosity you had when you were
- 14:31younger.
- 14:32Ask the questions.
- 14:35You know, whenever I go somewhere and I
- 14:39want to learn about something, I ask questions
- 14:41like I was a two- or three
- 14:42-year-old.
- 14:42Not in a bad manner, but I just
- 14:45get so right in there, and I ask
- 14:47them.
- 14:49And I become curious not because I have
- 14:51to, but because I want to, and that's
- 14:52the thing.
- 14:53When you want to do something, I don't
- 14:55care whether it's education, it's a relationship, it's
- 14:57learning a language, whatever it is, your body's
- 15:00going to be moving in that direction because
- 15:03you want it.
- 15:06Number 11, don't let responsibility eliminate imagination.
- 15:14Now, don't say because, well, you know what?
- 15:19I have to do it this way.
- 15:21No, you don't.
- 15:24Number 12, keep asking what else is possible.
- 15:29See, when we ask the questions, our mind
- 15:32says, all right, you want the answer, I'm
- 15:34going to work on the answer for you.
- 15:37So continue learning things outside your normal work,
- 15:41number 13.
- 15:42If your scope is here, and this is
- 15:44all you do, learn outside that scope, right?
- 15:49Take a class.
- 15:51Could be pottery.
- 15:52Maybe you're going to join the choir.
- 15:55Maybe you're going to volunteer somewhere.
- 15:58Maybe you're going to go back and get
- 16:00some more education.
- 16:01But think outside the box.
- 16:04Think outside your normal world, your box that
- 16:08you're in.
- 16:09Get out of the box.
- 16:11Number 14, new experiences give creativity new material.
- 16:18What do you mean by that, John?
- 16:20So we get a new experience, our mind
- 16:27has a completely different perception.
- 16:31It allows creativity to pull forward, right?
- 16:36Why is it when you get a writer's
- 16:38block, you pick up and you go to
- 16:40the room and you might work, you go
- 16:41outside and then it works for you, right?
- 16:44That's pretty cool.
- 16:50I think that's an important thing.
- 16:53A lot of people just don't get it,
- 16:56right?
- 16:56They don't get it.
- 16:58And the reason they don't get it is
- 17:00because they think it's the only way they
- 17:02can do it.
- 17:10That's important.
- 17:13If you act like you're not open to
- 17:21new creativity or having new ideas, you're going
- 17:25to be locked in the same framework that
- 17:27you've been.
- 17:28And we know what Einstein says, do the
- 17:30same thing over and over again, expecting different
- 17:33results.
- 17:34That is insanity.
- 17:39Number 15, talk with people who think differently
- 17:42in your life, right?
- 17:44You get the people that are the naysayers,
- 17:46I know you're going to get them.
- 17:48You can't change them, don't even try.
- 17:52Talk with other people in your life.
- 17:59I think that is one of the most
- 18:01important things that I can share with you,
- 18:05okay?
- 18:06That is the most important thing I can
- 18:08share with you.
- 18:13But it comes from the mind first, okay?
- 18:17Number 16, explore subjects that have nothing to
- 18:20do with your work, right?
- 18:23If you're in, I don't know, let's say
- 18:27you're in the field of real estate, explore
- 18:33music.
- 18:34Explore other things, whether you like them or
- 18:36not.
- 18:37See what they're like.
- 18:39My grandmother, Morley, on my dad's side, always
- 18:45used to tell me, you know, John, you
- 18:46need to try new things.
- 18:48One of the things she wanted me to
- 18:50try was liver.
- 18:53And my dad's like, oh, he'll never eat
- 18:54that.
- 18:55I said, first I was a little bit
- 18:57of like, he's like, you have to try
- 18:58it.
- 18:58I'm like, all right, I'll give it a
- 18:59shot.
- 19:00What's the worst that happens?
- 19:01I don't like it.
- 19:03Took it, a little messy, cut it up.
- 19:05But it's pretty good.
- 19:08I told people like liver, they said, oh,
- 19:10we're never trying that.
- 19:11So when somebody's already marked in their mind
- 19:14that they're not trying it, they don't even
- 19:16give anything a chance.
- 19:23And ladies and gentlemen, this is what I
- 19:25think that a lot of people get stuck
- 19:27on, okay?
- 19:30You know what that is?
- 19:33People get stuck on so many things.
- 19:35But what do you think people get stuck
- 19:36on?
- 19:40Make things simply because they're interesting.
- 19:43Not because you have to.
- 19:45Number 18, stop requiring creativity to produce money
- 19:49every time.
- 19:49It doesn't have to.
- 19:51It will for you lots of time, but
- 19:53you don't need it to.
- 19:57Number 20, guys, creativity can make ordinary life
- 20:01more interesting.
- 20:03I found that when we actually get creative,
- 20:08when we actually enjoy the moment, life slows
- 20:14down for us.
- 20:17Life slows down.
- 20:27That's important, guys.
- 20:35And what do we mean by that?
- 20:42I think it comes down to, again, our
- 20:49perceptions.
- 20:51And these perceptions happen because of our surrounding,
- 20:57because of what we hear, what we see,
- 20:59what we touch, even what we taste and
- 21:03smell.
- 21:07Number 21, solve familiar problems in an unfamiliar
- 21:11way, right?
- 21:12We've all been taught that you can't put
- 21:14the square peg in a round hole.
- 21:16But suppose there was a way to do
- 21:18it.
- 21:19Just suppose.
- 21:23Suppose there was a way to do it.
- 21:27Would you try to go that way?
- 21:29Would you say, I'm not doing that.
- 21:33When people dig their heels into something, first
- 21:38thing I say is stubborn.
- 21:39And the second thing I say to myself
- 21:43is, why?
- 21:46Are they scared?
- 21:48Are they embarrassed?
- 21:51Or are they just that adamant?
- 21:55And usually what I find is they're scared.
- 22:03They have no idea.
- 22:03I'll ask them, like, OK, so I know
- 22:05you don't want to do this today.
- 22:07That's fine.
- 22:08But I have a question.
- 22:11What would have made you want to do
- 22:13that?
- 22:13I'm not going to ask you to do
- 22:14it.
- 22:14But what would have made you want to
- 22:16do that today?
- 22:18Well, I think if I understood how to
- 22:20do it, oh, well, I can show you
- 22:23how I do it.
- 22:24And then you get the idea.
- 22:28It's important to understand those things.
- 22:34Number 22, keep an idea list you actually
- 22:37return to.
- 22:39How many people write things down in a
- 22:41journal or a book and go back to
- 22:44them?
- 22:45They don't.
- 22:48They don't.
- 22:56They don't do it.
- 23:00But the question is, why?
- 23:02I think the why question comes out because,
- 23:06well, it's not the norm.
- 23:08Nobody else is doing it.
- 23:10That's also why they're not successful.
- 23:13Number 23, build on ideas instead of endlessly
- 23:16collecting them.
- 23:19What do I mean by that?
- 23:20So this goes back to the premise of
- 23:22working on your business as opposed to working
- 23:25in your business.
- 23:27I think that's an important piece.
- 23:32How do we work on our business?
- 23:36On our business is not hard, but it's
- 23:39different.
- 23:46And those ideas and just collecting them and
- 23:48saying, gee, I'm going to do this and
- 23:49do that.
- 23:50But then you actually just collect them, but
- 23:53you never really execute.
- 23:55It's kind of like the procrastinator that tries
- 23:56to write a book and just outlines.
- 23:58I know what happened to me.
- 23:59I was outlining.
- 24:00I said, OK, enough.
- 24:01I've been outlining for a week.
- 24:02No more outlining.
- 24:03Let me start writing now.
- 24:06Number 24, finish some of what you start.
- 24:11I didn't say you have to finish everything.
- 24:13I said finish some of what you start.
- 24:20When your mind and body get into this
- 24:23state of saying, I finish things, I do
- 24:26things, you know what happens?
- 24:27It gets easier for you.
- 24:30But in the beginning, it is uncomfortable.
- 24:36All right, number 25, share ideas when sharing
- 24:39can help them grow.
- 24:45Sometimes people are afraid to give their two
- 24:47cents because maybe it might, I don't know,
- 24:52affect someone.
- 24:54It might rustle their feathers the wrong way.
- 24:59Just saying.
- 25:04Share ideas when sharing can help them grow.
- 25:07Many people think that, well, they got their
- 25:09way of doing it.
- 25:10But maybe you have an idea that might
- 25:12help them.
- 25:14I'm just saying, guys.
- 25:18Number 26, protect ideas that aren't ready for
- 25:22outside judgment, right?
- 25:29Maybe you're doing something a certain way, but
- 25:33the audience you're with, you don't feel safe
- 25:36around because you feel they're going to judge
- 25:38you.
- 25:39It's OK to keep those ideas under your
- 25:42hat.
- 25:42You don't need to disclose them.
- 25:46You don't need outside judgment.
- 25:48Number 27, guys, keep creating even when nobody
- 25:52notices.
- 25:52You're not creating for other people.
- 25:55You're creating for you so you can become
- 25:57a better version of yourself.
- 25:58That's the real reason.
- 26:01Anybody that tries to do something just for
- 26:02show, they've already lost.
- 26:08When you do it for yourself and you
- 26:10show up for yourself, regardless of who shows
- 26:12up, that's when you win.
- 26:15OK?
- 26:16Number 27, keep creating even when nobody notices.
- 26:21And I tell you this because I want
- 26:23to emphasize it again and again.
- 26:25Number 28, your creativity belongs to you before
- 26:29it ever belongs to an audience.
- 26:33There was somebody I was sending an email
- 26:37to today about supporting one of my organizations
- 26:39for something that we do.
- 26:42And the person got back to me emphatically
- 26:45and said, no, they didn't like our style
- 26:48of artwork or what we were doing because
- 26:50they're an artist and they're a little bit,
- 26:52let's say, sore that we weren't using them.
- 26:56But that's not really fair.
- 26:58The person was respectful at the end and
- 26:59said, hey, I wish all you all the
- 27:01best, but I can't be part of this.
- 27:05That's fine.
- 27:06Number 28, as we understand our audience and
- 27:11we grow it, it has to start with
- 27:13us first.
- 27:14Number 29, the creative person you remember is
- 27:17still inside you.
- 27:20You can still get him or her out.
- 27:21Don't be afraid.
- 27:23Number 30, your creativity isn't gone.
- 27:25You just need to start using it again.
- 27:28And that's what this whole week has been
- 27:30about.
- 27:31You didn't lose anything, ladies and gentlemen.
- 27:33All you did was stop something for a
- 27:38little while.
- 27:39You didn't realize you could turn the light
- 27:43off or turn it back on at any
- 27:47time.
- 27:49You didn't realize the mic was off.
- 27:51You didn't realize that all you had to
- 27:54do was do a few stretches every morning
- 27:57to feel a little better.
- 27:59Ladies and gentlemen, I thank you so much
- 28:00for joining me this week, tonight, and every
