- 0:01Never confuse a temporary assignment with a permanent
- 0:04identity. There's a story behind that.
- 0:08This is your daily message from Chad #1200 and three to upgrade
- 0:11your mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:14Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:16yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:18Todd Graves, founder of Raising Canes, who still puts Fry Cook
- 0:21on his business card. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:25You may think the job you have to do is keeping you from the
- 0:27life you want, but upgraded thinking sees it as scaffolding.
- 0:31Here's the story. While at Louisiana State
- 0:34University, Todd Graves and Craig Sylvie wrote a business
- 0:37plan for a restaurant that would sell one thing, chicken fingers.
- 0:41The professor gave it the lowest grade in the class.
- 0:43Then the bank said no, they had no management experience.
- 0:46Go work for a restaurant company for 10 years, they said.
- 0:48Then come back. So Todd Graves went to
- 0:51California and worked as a Boilermaker in the oil
- 0:53refineries. 95 hour weeks, no days off.
- 0:57A kid doing the work he didn't know how to do, who never shut
- 0:59up about chicken fingers. His Co workers called him
- 1:02Hollywood. One of them, a guy named Wild
- 1:05Bill, told him where the real money was.
- 1:07Sockeye salmon in Alaska. So Todd flew to Anchorage, took
- 1:12a float plane and hitchhiked to the fisheries, pitched a tint on
- 1:15the tundra, lived on pork and beans, and walked boat to boat,
- 1:18baking captains for a spot. He got one.
- 1:22And if you've ever seen the reality TV show Deadliest Catch,
- 1:26it was that waves breaking over stern loaded with salmon,
- 1:30medical helicopters pulling people out.
- 1:32In his words, I was out there for this chicken finger dream.
- 1:36Todd says he would have worked construction in Nebraska.
- 1:39He would have knitted blankets. The work was never the point.
- 1:42It was the scaffolding, ugly and temporary to build what he
- 1:46really wanted. Zig Ziglar put it this way, If
- 1:50you do what you need to do, when you need to do it, then the day
- 1:53will come when you can do what you want to do, when you want to
- 1:56do it. That's scaffolding.
- 1:59It's ugly, it's temporary, and it comes down once the building
- 2:02can stand. But watch what else the
- 2:04scaffolding built. Some of his earliest investors
- 2:07were fellow Boilermakers, including Wild Bill.
- 2:10The men who worked beside Todd in the half two season believed
- 2:13in him For the 1/2 season. Todd did much of the work on the
- 2:18first Raising Cane's with his own hands.
- 2:20The first month's profit was $30.00.
- 2:23But he was finally living his dream and 30 years later he
- 2:27still calls himself a fry cook. The scaffolding came down.
- 2:31The relationship stayed up. Don't confuse a temporary
- 2:35assignment with a permanent identity.
- 2:38The job you've got to do today isn't who you are.
- 2:41It may be what's holding up what you're becoming.
- 2:44And the people working beside you right now Treat them well.
- 2:48They might be your first investors.
- 2:50The better story to tell yourself is if I do what I need
- 2:53to do, when I need to do it, then the day will come when I
- 2:56can do what I want to do when I want to do it.
- 3:00Tell me a story of the job that got you where you are to from
