Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm poorly.
- 0:01Speaker 2: I sing for Sons of Erebus from Adelaide Black and
- 0:05Speaker 2: Death groove band. You know it's a bit niche, but
- 0:08Speaker 2: I love it. The EPs just drops the first thing.
- 0:10Speaker 2: We've been going working on this for a bit of
- 0:12Speaker 2: year now and it's called Drenched in play. It's going
- 0:15Speaker 2: to be awesome, man, I love it.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Fantasy Paulie, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:19Speaker 1: No worries so as you.
- 0:21Speaker 4: Say, Man, Sons of Ebus released your debut EP, Drenched
- 0:24Speaker 4: did played the last week, so I know it hasn't
- 0:26Speaker 4: been long, but that's the early reception.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Ben, Yeah, we had pretty good so far.
- 0:30Speaker 2: We've had a good feedback and a lot of the compliments,
- 0:33Speaker 2: a lot of messages all positives so far. Men, good
- 0:37Speaker 2: stuff and the songs are familiar with the fans like that.
- 0:41Speaker 1: We've been playing for a while trying to bust out
- 0:43Speaker 1: finishing the CD.
- 0:44Speaker 2: So yeah, it's had a good reception.
- 0:48Speaker 4: Wherever can you dive into it a bit deeper from
- 0:50Speaker 4: a musical point of view and tell us what you're
- 0:51Speaker 4: going for with it?
- 0:54Speaker 1: Oh?
- 0:55Speaker 2: I mean it started off as a bit more of
- 0:56Speaker 2: a black metal thing like with Me and Ethan, and
- 0:58Speaker 2: then it's kind of a involved and me dipping my
- 1:01Speaker 2: style into it.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I come from a bit more of a groove background,
- 1:04Speaker 1: and then we've just we've.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Tried to make that kind of sound, that bit darker sound,
- 1:08Speaker 2: a bit more accessible, I guess by taking some of
- 1:11Speaker 2: the intensity out of it.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:16Speaker 4: So as a band in the modern age, right, like
- 1:19Speaker 4: what sorts of things you discussed going into your first
- 1:21Speaker 4: release do you sort of do you plan things out
- 1:23Speaker 4: or do you just throw it all out there your
- 1:24Speaker 4: best and see what sticks.
- 1:26Speaker 2: So ah, I mean we've got more songs ready to drop.
- 1:31Speaker 2: We're going to start recording again in a couple of weeks.
- 1:33Speaker 2: So yeah, it's like it at the time of deciding
- 1:37Speaker 2: what was going to go on, it was like, all right,
- 1:38Speaker 2: these are the songs that the people know. I mean
- 1:41Speaker 2: a couple of them've got T shirt runs, like they've
- 1:43Speaker 2: been like, you know, well recepted by the fee. So
- 1:46Speaker 2: the ones that have already already got merch runs for it,
- 1:49Speaker 2: and that we've got to drop them on the album.
- 1:51Speaker 2: There's a couple that have got always got good reception.
- 1:54Speaker 2: So we were like, nah, it's got to be these
- 1:56Speaker 2: four tracks. It's otherwise we're just going to end up
- 1:59Speaker 2: blowing out into like fifteen like, you know, two discs.
- 2:02Speaker 1: You know all this.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Now Sons were Rivers born back in twenty twenty one.
- 2:08Speaker 4: So this is your first Epter album in four years
- 2:10Speaker 4: as a band. Was that something that you planned to
- 2:12Speaker 4: take so long but it had just happened that way?
- 2:15Speaker 1: No, I think it.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Originally it started a bit more of a financial thing,
- 2:19Speaker 2: and then we had to replace the drama. Early on,
- 2:23Speaker 2: we encountered some hurdles with with with that and then
- 2:29Speaker 2: finding an extra and then finding another guitarist, going through
- 2:31Speaker 2: that decision whether we needed one or not. And then
- 2:35Speaker 2: once we had all the members together and started writing
- 2:37Speaker 2: new songs, and that put the CD further back. And
- 2:40Speaker 2: then but yeah, once we decided what we were getting
- 2:44Speaker 2: done and we just let up book this book den
- 2:47Speaker 2: is done, finish it, get it. And then and then
- 2:51Speaker 2: the mixed master became a bit harder the two because
- 2:54Speaker 2: then we started working in competition with guys that had
- 2:58Speaker 2: tied at deadlines and us like Freedom of Fear and
- 3:00Speaker 2: Headboard and stuff like that. So we're so we're now
- 3:03Speaker 2: working with the same producer and trying to get trying
- 3:07Speaker 2: to get our stuff finished amongst all that high priority
- 3:09Speaker 2: stuff as well.
- 3:10Speaker 4: So yeah, yeah, true turned out as you say, there
- 3:13Speaker 4: is only four trucks on AP so I want to
- 3:15Speaker 4: run through them one at a time and tell us
- 3:17Speaker 4: a bit more about each song from a musical point
- 3:19Speaker 4: of view and then what they are about.
- 3:20Speaker 3: So we'll start with Bridge of Corpses.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Yep, I guess that's a bit more of like the
- 3:26Speaker 2: first time I listened to it, Ethan ran the idea.
- 3:28Speaker 1: He's a guitarist, he ran the idea passed me.
- 3:30Speaker 2: He's like, I want to call this song is, and
- 3:32Speaker 2: this is the idea I have for it, And I
- 3:34Speaker 2: just went off on my own tangent just from the
- 3:36Speaker 2: words Bridge of Corpses and started like having all these
- 3:39Speaker 2: like King Diamond, you know, mutiple fate storylines run through
- 3:44Speaker 2: my head, cannibals and and black magic and and things
- 3:48Speaker 2: like that. So yeah, it became became one of those stories.
- 3:51Speaker 2: And then the sound behind it is a bit more
- 3:54Speaker 2: like a lot of people always hear that one of
- 3:59Speaker 2: these this is and there's this megadith riff which is
- 4:01Speaker 2: like always people people who were saying, oh that song
- 4:03Speaker 2: that Bridger Corpus sounds like that, and you know it's
- 4:06Speaker 2: not supposed to sound like that.
- 4:08Speaker 1: It's just it's just.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Coming out like, yeah, it's got that like underlying like
- 4:12Speaker 2: like nineties groove, and then just kicks into this like bam,
- 4:15Speaker 2: little punchy like intensity.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Like fucking bang bang bang bang, and then yeah, part
- 4:20Speaker 1: of my language.
- 4:21Speaker 3: And then as much as.
- 4:23Speaker 2: You like sweet and then yeah, so yeah, I would
- 4:28Speaker 2: call that kind of like that's that's it.
- 4:30Speaker 1: That where the influence draws from. I guess that early like.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Late eighties, early nineties, like real early like a cult
- 4:38Speaker 2: power of metal black metal stuff here.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Yeah. Nice.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Then we move on to Horrific Penetration, which I can
- 4:44Speaker 4: only imagine the film clip for.
- 4:48Speaker 2: I think there's got I think the title itself's got
- 4:50Speaker 2: a lot of imagination behind it, like the so actually
- 4:53Speaker 2: so Rassi other guitarists is him and I used to
- 4:56Speaker 2: be a band back in the day, and the drummer
- 5:00Speaker 2: from that band sadly took his own life a few
- 5:05Speaker 2: many years ago, and they were in a band a long, long,
- 5:08Speaker 2: long time ago, and that was the name of their
- 5:10Speaker 2: point being Horrific Penetration, and the once we had the
- 5:14Speaker 2: music down, the lyrics interpreted for me came something different
- 5:19Speaker 2: from that like when I listen, when I listened to
- 5:21Speaker 2: those words, I was like, oh, you know, there's a
- 5:24Speaker 2: bit of a.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I guess it's a.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Horrible plague happening in the online media with grooming and
- 5:32Speaker 2: and and underage and trafficking and all the things that
- 5:35Speaker 2: are happening in the planet. So that's where the passion
- 5:39Speaker 2: for that song for me comes from. It's a real
- 5:41Speaker 2: like there's a lot of victim impact and and and
- 5:47Speaker 2: the shitty idea behind a lot of those people's crappy psychologies.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Okay, then we've got Army geddon.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Ah at the end of world. Who doesn't know that?
- 6:02Speaker 1: Who does? I mean what we live in? You know,
- 6:05Speaker 1: who doesn't love the stories of you know, the religion.
- 6:11Speaker 1: I mean this story, this story, this story for.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Me really deals from the omens like that trilogy, you know,
- 6:16Speaker 2: the movies.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I got a lot of the subject matter from that.
- 6:21Speaker 2: From this, it's more of a I'd say it's probably
- 6:24Speaker 2: more black metal cross with like like really really old
- 6:28Speaker 2: heavy stuff, like like kind of that doomy black Sabbath
- 6:31Speaker 2: kind of sound. PRUS would like the early black metal sound,
- 6:36Speaker 2: the actual noise of it. But the the subject matter
- 6:41Speaker 2: is definitely definitely related to those like to that, especially
- 6:44Speaker 2: the second Omen movie where they talk about the horror
- 6:47Speaker 2: of Babylon in the second the Coming of the Anti
- 6:49Speaker 2: Christ and all that. So and I went to a
- 6:52Speaker 2: I went to a lovely pub, you know, private Christian school,
- 6:56Speaker 2: so all about that stuff, educated on it.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Well, versed on it.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly nice.
- 7:02Speaker 3: And the last one on the on the EP's Children
- 7:05Speaker 3: of the Unholy.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Yeah, this is this is where when when someone says
- 7:10Speaker 2: to me, I want to do black metal, this is
- 7:12Speaker 2: what I think of. Oh that's it's so basically like
- 7:19Speaker 2: anti religious and like contradictory religious. It's just like for me,
- 7:24Speaker 2: it's just like, oh, that's that's where that's the first
- 7:28Speaker 2: kind of black metal I ever heard.
- 7:29Speaker 1: So like that's where I got that from. And it's
- 7:31Speaker 1: just black and threat.
- 7:33Speaker 2: It's just speed and nastiness and satan, you know.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Now you touched on this before me, But you had
- 7:43Speaker 4: so much fun making this EP that you've already looked
- 7:46Speaker 4: at book and time to record the full length. So
- 7:48Speaker 4: what is that can be similar to what's on Dressed
- 7:51Speaker 4: in Plague or was that just like laying the platform.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I think that's more laying the platform with our sounds,
- 7:58Speaker 2: you know, the songs change, all the songs, like I mean,
- 8:01Speaker 2: there's more black metally songs, there's more groovy songs, there's
- 8:03Speaker 2: more there's more of death metal songs like the there
- 8:07Speaker 2: there's probably a bit more like.
- 8:12Speaker 1: I would say, I carn't think of the.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Distinction between each like rather than them all trying to
- 8:19Speaker 2: like merging together more so like in this one. But yeah,
- 8:23Speaker 2: I would say that distinctively, Like you could hear this
- 8:25Speaker 2: sound like this is like because there's stuff that is
- 8:28Speaker 2: influenced by dying foods, and there's stuff that is influenced
- 8:31Speaker 2: by like immortal, and there's stuff that's influenced by paying terror.
- 8:36Speaker 1: You know. So it's it's a bit like trying to
- 8:43Speaker 1: keep trying to keep those things in their own lanes respectively.
- 8:47Speaker 3: What's looking about next year? Sometime?
- 8:49Speaker 2: For that you reckon on hopefully earlier, Hopefully it doesn't
- 8:52Speaker 2: take flipping four years like this.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Yes, yes, I think it'll be early.
- 8:57Speaker 2: I think I think I'm i'm i'm I'm hoping for
- 9:00Speaker 2: somewhere between now and the middle of the next year.
- 9:03Speaker 1: That's that's really the hope.
- 9:05Speaker 2: That's that's that's what I would plan on and like,
- 9:08Speaker 2: I know a couple of other guys might so.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Why did you fuck say that?
- 9:15Speaker 1: That's what you get to do when you're singer.
- 9:19Speaker 3: You can say what do you want rest to do?
- 9:20Speaker 1: That's right.
- 9:22Speaker 3: There. You've got to.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Show coming up later this year supporting us thrash Metal
- 9:26Speaker 4: out back to so tell us more about that.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Yeah, that was we heard our touring the production company.
- 9:33Speaker 2: I don't know how the promotion company got. They fell
- 9:36Speaker 2: into their lapse as far as I know. For the
- 9:38Speaker 2: for the from wanting to add an Adelaide show, that
- 9:41Speaker 2: was just the availability and the dates and Halloween. Who
- 9:45Speaker 2: doesn't love that? I'm stoked. I haven't done on the
- 9:48Speaker 2: international support since The Ripper, I think in twenty thirteen.
- 9:54Speaker 2: That was with my with my mother being a murder
- 9:56Speaker 2: of crows.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Yeah cool? And about any other shows, you's got the
- 9:59Speaker 3: other shows up people to catch.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Yet, We've got a show in Melbourne at the Boogieyman Bar.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Well that's Abosford, which is you know Melbourne. It's that's
- 10:11Speaker 2: at the Boogieyman Bar. It's with rautism for names for
- 10:15Speaker 2: names birthday. So it's going to be killer show. And
- 10:17Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure terror rental and disdaughter of playing.
- 10:21Speaker 1: I Reckon, I Reckon. That's the line up and Sons
- 10:24Speaker 1: of Erebus of course, but.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it'll be our second time in Melbourne and countless
- 10:31Speaker 2: times away.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Now I love it.
- 10:33Speaker 2: It's good.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I like I like Melbourne. That's October four.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Yeah, and then there's the Halloween show with Vector at
- 10:44Speaker 2: the Woodshed that's in Adelaide or it's some royal park
- 10:47Speaker 2: in South Australia.
- 10:48Speaker 1: And I think there's.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Possibly there might be a possibility of another show being
- 10:54Speaker 2: announced that I am not allowed to announce, but there
- 10:58Speaker 2: could be something else more.
- 11:00Speaker 3: White push on that one.
- 11:01Speaker 4: But where can we keep up to date with the
- 11:03Speaker 4: band and find out themselves what's going on?
- 11:05Speaker 2: Ah? Well, we've got We've got all the socialist Facebook,
