- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is, Thursday.
- 0:15It's the 1st of May. A pinch and a punch and all
- 0:17that. Hope you're going well on this
- 0:20first day of the next month. And did you know there's
- 0:23something quite profound about today because it is the first of
- 0:27the 5th 2025. So if you add up 15 and 25, you
- 0:34get 31, which is the number of days in the month.
- 0:39There might be something in there for all of us or not at
- 0:43all. No, I doubt that very much.
- 0:45Happy, happy made to you. Lovely to have your company as
- 0:48today. Friends, we are going to finish
- 0:51off this first letter that Peter writes to his friends spread all
- 0:55around the world. So here he will offer some final
- 0:59advice and then a final greeting.
- 1:02So this is for us as we are spread all around the world
- 1:05doing our best to live our Christian lives in a world that
- 1:09is most decidedly not a Christian world.
- 1:13So join me friends, as we hear these words for us written all
- 1:17that time ago in First Peter Chapter 5.
- 1:32And now a word to you who are elders in the churches.
- 1:36I too am an elder and a witness to the sufferings of Christ, and
- 1:41I too will share in His glory when He is revealed to the whole
- 1:45world. As a fellow elder, I appeal to
- 1:49you. Care for the flock that God has
- 1:52entrusted to you. Watch it willingly, not
- 1:55grudgingly, not for what you will get out of it, but because
- 1:59you are eager to serve God. Don't Lord it over the people
- 2:04assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example,
- 2:09and when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a
- 2:13crown of never ending glory and honour.
- 2:17In the same way, you who are younger must accept the
- 2:20authority of the elders, and all of you dress yourselves in
- 2:25humility as you relate to one another.
- 2:28For God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
- 2:35So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God and at the
- 2:39right time He will lift you up in honour.
- 2:43Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you.
- 2:49Stay alert. Watch out for your great enemy,
- 2:52the devil. He prowls around like a roaring
- 2:55lion looking for someone to devour.
- 2:59Stand firm against him and be strong in your faith.
- 3:04Remember that your family of believers all over the world is
- 3:08going through the same kind of suffering you are.
- 3:11In His kindness, God called you to share in His eternal glory by
- 3:18means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a
- 3:22little while, He will restore, support and strengthen you, and
- 3:28He will place you on a firm foundation.
- 3:31All power to Him forever. Amen.
- 3:38I've written and sent this short letter to you with the help of
- 3:41Silas, whom I commend to you as a faithful brother.
- 3:46My purpose in writing is to encourage you and assure you
- 3:50that what you are experiencing is truly part of God's grace for
- 3:54you. Stand firm in this grace.
- 3:58Your sister church here in Babylon sends you greetings and
- 4:02so does my son Mark. Greet each other with a kiss of
- 4:05love. Peace be with all of you who are
- 4:09in Christ. Oh Lord, right in the middle of
- 4:22this chapter, you give us the most beautiful encouragement and
- 4:27gift. Ah, Jesus, you tell us that it's
- 4:31you who cares for us and that we don't need to puff ourselves up,
- 4:38but we can live humbly under your mighty power and that you
- 4:44will lift us up. We don't have to do that
- 4:46ourselves and that we don't have to hold onto our worries and
- 4:51cares, but we can give them to you because you are not an
- 4:56impartial God sitting on the judgement seat without any
- 5:01empathy or involvement or love. No, you are a deeply invested,
- 5:06kind, loving God who cares for us, who will lift us up and
- 5:14advocate on our behalf for us. And you will take those
- 5:18concerns, those cares that weigh us down, and you will care for
- 5:23us. Instead.
- 5:27Help us fall into your all encompassing embrace, living in
- 5:33your provision and your care, knowing that we don't have to do
- 5:37this for ourselves, because we have you, our loving, gracious,
- 5:42kind, perfect Saviour. And we pray all of this in your
- 5:47name, Jesus, Amen.
