- 0:00Speaker 1: Warning.
- 0:00Speaker 2: The following podcast contains an entertaining look at astronomy, physics,
- 0:04Speaker 2: and space news throughout the known universe. Listeners have been
- 0:07Speaker 2: known to learn about astronomical phenomenon, the scientific method, and
- 0:10Speaker 2: expanded vocabulary to include terms like quasar asterism and uranus. Listen,
- 0:15Speaker 2: that's your own risk.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Go ahead.
- 0:22Speaker 4: When made of stars, made them stars, madies. When made
- 0:30Speaker 4: of stars, you could be from high they would New Mexicomus.
- 0:39Speaker 5: Where are.
- 0:41Speaker 4: Stars?
- 0:43Speaker 5: When we are made of stars?
- 0:56Speaker 6: I'm West Carol, joined by my good friend doctor Sean
- 0:58Speaker 6: Cruising from Columbus State University's Coca Cola Space Science Center.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Morning Sean, Good morning, Wes's good to be here today.
- 1:05Speaker 1: We have a.
- 1:07Speaker 6: Couple of really interesting stories here, and it's not to
- 1:10Speaker 6: say that the others aren't interesting. We just have two
- 1:12Speaker 6: that are especially interesting and this we're not going to
- 1:18Speaker 6: start with this one, but it's especially interesting to me
- 1:20Speaker 6: that we were very excited about the person who was
- 1:26Speaker 6: originally picked to head up NASA and then suddenly, like
- 1:30Speaker 6: things just went south quickly. It was like all of
- 1:34Speaker 6: a sudden things got really weird in DC and then
- 1:39Speaker 6: he wasn't the pick to head up NASA. And now
- 1:43Speaker 6: it seems that talks have begun again, but we'll get
- 1:46Speaker 6: to that in a minute. That's just that's exciting for
- 1:49Speaker 6: us because anybody who's been following this show for a
- 1:52Speaker 6: length of time knows how excited we were at Jared
- 1:55Speaker 6: Isaacsman's name, his name being in the in talks at
- 1:58Speaker 6: least to head up now. But we'll get to that
- 2:01Speaker 6: in a minute. First, I want to start with SpaceX.
- 2:04Speaker 6: There's absolutely no connection between Isaacman and SpaceX except that
- 2:07Speaker 6: he and Elon are buddies. But they have had another
- 2:10Speaker 6: successful launch, and this is good. We need more successful launches.
- 2:15Speaker 7: We like successful launches. And yes, no connection whatsoever. None,
- 2:20Speaker 7: pay no attention to the billionaire behind the curtain. Oh wait,
- 2:24Speaker 7: they're both billionaires.
- 2:25Speaker 1: That's right.
- 2:26Speaker 7: It's hard to know which ones behind the curtain. All right,
- 2:28Speaker 7: So anyway, let's go ahead and just talk about hardware first.
- 2:30Speaker 7: I like talking about flight hardware. And SpaceX launched their Starship,
- 2:38Speaker 7: but they launched it with their super heavy booster, which
- 2:41Speaker 7: is a version two booster. Now why is this important, Well,
- 2:46Speaker 7: it's because that's the last one. They're about to move
- 2:50Speaker 7: on to version three. And as the titles of these
- 2:56Speaker 7: rocket projects might indicate their moveing on to a more
- 3:00Speaker 7: advanced concept, right, So they're moving on from version two
- 3:04Speaker 7: to version three the next launch, and Version three obviously
- 3:09Speaker 7: has a number of upgrades which they've learned from their
- 3:12Speaker 7: agile development engineering process of blowing up rockets in various
- 3:16Speaker 7: stages and figuring out what goes wrong, and the improvements
- 3:20Speaker 7: are made on the version three.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Booster that's coming.
- 3:23Speaker 7: Okay, now, if anybody is in our listening audience and
- 3:26Speaker 7: doesn't know what Starship is, welcome. We'd like to welcome
- 3:31Speaker 7: into the show because obviously you have not been a
- 3:33Speaker 7: long time listener. But Starship is the launch vehicle that
- 3:38Speaker 7: Elon Musk is under contract with NASA to use as
- 3:42Speaker 7: a landing vehicle for NASA's Artemis program, the return to
- 3:46Speaker 7: the Moon, specifically during Artemis three. The current model has
- 3:52Speaker 7: what's called the Orion spacecraft launching to space aboard the
- 3:56Speaker 7: Space Launch System, which is NASA's heavy lift, and that
- 4:02Speaker 7: Orion capsule flies all the way to lunar orbit and
- 4:05Speaker 7: there in the orbit around the Lovely Moon, it will
- 4:10Speaker 7: dock up with a SpaceX Starship, and then Starship will
- 4:17Speaker 7: be the vehicle that takes that group of astronauts down
- 4:21Speaker 7: to the surface, lands safely and vertically, then allows those
- 4:28Speaker 7: astronauts to explore the Moon for a while. Then they
- 4:31Speaker 7: jump back on the starship vehicle from SpaceX, lift off
- 4:35Speaker 7: the lunar surface, fly back to lunar orbit where they
- 4:39Speaker 7: redock with their sports car like Orion capsule, and return.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Back to the Earth.
- 4:46Speaker 7: Okay, so that's the plan, right, So what has to happen, Well,
- 4:51Speaker 7: we have to get very good at launching. We have
- 4:53Speaker 7: to get very good at launching SLS first, and so
- 4:57Speaker 7: SLS is going to schedule right now to launch its
- 5:01Speaker 7: second flight called Artemis two, and put astronauts around the
- 5:05Speaker 7: back side of the Moon sometime early next year, and
- 5:10Speaker 7: a NASA had originally announced somewhere between February and April.
- 5:15Speaker 7: We now know that they're leaning toward the front of
- 5:17Speaker 7: that launch window. They're trying to get this done as
- 5:20Speaker 7: soon as possible. There's some rumors that we're racing the
- 5:23Speaker 7: Chinese to be the first nation to put boots back
- 5:26Speaker 7: on the surface of the Moon, and so obviously with
- 5:29Speaker 7: the Trump administration in place, that's a very high priority,
- 5:33Speaker 7: and so they have tried to move up that timeline
- 5:36Speaker 7: but they can't walk on the Moon until Starship is
- 5:41Speaker 7: capable of actually flying to the Moon. So Starship has
- 5:46Speaker 7: to be able to get up there and be that
- 5:49Speaker 7: transfer vehicle to get down to the surface. So that's
- 5:52Speaker 7: why a Starship rocket launching on Monday of this week,
- 5:57Speaker 7: October thirteenth and having a near flawless flight out of
- 6:03Speaker 7: Star Based, Texas, which is a town that used to
- 6:06Speaker 7: be called Bokachika, but they actually changed the name of
- 6:09Speaker 7: the town.
- 6:09Speaker 3: I just find this amazing.
- 6:11Speaker 7: So Star Based, Texas, that rocket launched about six twenty
- 6:17Speaker 7: three pm Central daylight time. But who's counting to that
- 6:20Speaker 7: level of accuracy off of something they call launchpad A
- 6:23Speaker 7: at Starbase, and it went on roughly a one hour flight.
- 6:27Speaker 7: Here's what we know. Everything worked to near perfection. The rocket,
- 6:36Speaker 7: boosters aboard the main stage that that super heavy lift
- 6:40Speaker 7: vehicle all worked great. They had one engine that didn't
- 6:46Speaker 7: reignite during the boost back burn, but it did reignite
- 6:51Speaker 7: during the landing burn, and they were able to land
- 6:53Speaker 7: that vehicle, which is fantastic. So then the actual rocket,
- 7:01Speaker 7: the actual spacecraft itself, which is just called ship. If
- 7:05Speaker 7: you talk to people, If you talk to people at SpaceX.
- 7:08Speaker 7: They use words like ship and booster. We try to
- 7:13Speaker 7: round that out a little bit more here on the
- 7:14Speaker 7: podcast and say, that's the spaceship that they call starship,
- 7:17Speaker 7: except the whole rocket's called starship, and it's part ship
- 7:20Speaker 7: and part booster. So ship performed all of its maneuvers
- 7:27Speaker 7: very close to flawlessly, made its way toward the Indian Ocean,
- 7:31Speaker 7: and on the way it was able to jettison eight
- 7:35Speaker 7: large metal rectangles. You know, imagine those things from two
- 7:40Speaker 7: thousand and one Space Odyssey something like that. Yeah, we
- 7:43Speaker 7: don't know what those were made out of, but and
- 7:46Speaker 7: maybe it's not exactly Maybe I should have made that comparison. Anyway,
- 7:49Speaker 7: it's just big rectangles. Okay, So why did they just
- 7:51Speaker 7: launch a bunch of random big rectangles. Well, those random
- 7:55Speaker 7: big rectangles were to simulate the size and mass of
- 7:59Speaker 7: future our ship version three satellite deployment, right, And so
- 8:05Speaker 7: this was you're basically just launching dead payload weight to
- 8:10Speaker 7: approximate future payloads that you're going to launch on the vehicle.
- 8:14Speaker 7: But the deployment of those very large rectangles all went flawlessly,
- 8:19Speaker 7: and then that vehicle ship was able to reignite its
- 8:23Speaker 7: raptor engines and do a deorbit burn which approximates the
- 8:27Speaker 7: approximates coming back in and landing vertically, and so all
- 8:31Speaker 7: of that went exactly to plan and so and actually
- 8:35Speaker 7: the whole vehicle made it through its point of peak
- 8:38Speaker 7: heating as well as the greatest point of atmospheric pressure.
- 8:42Speaker 7: These are very important milestones in testing a rocket because
- 8:46Speaker 7: it means the structural integrity of your vehicle is sufficient
- 8:49Speaker 7: to complete all these tasks. Guess what success? Version two success? Right,
- 8:55Speaker 7: So all of these milestones were reached with the Version
- 8:58Speaker 7: two vehicle. How much better is version three gonna be? Well,
- 9:03Speaker 7: we're gonna find out on the very next starship launch
- 9:06Speaker 7: because they're graduating from version two to version three. That
- 9:10Speaker 7: sounds like a lot of really good things happening from
- 9:13Speaker 7: SpaceX on the way to helping NASA accomplish its Artemis
- 9:18Speaker 7: mission of landing human beings on the surface of the move.
- 9:21Speaker 6: Now, I'm no rocket surgeon. I can just tell you
- 9:23Speaker 6: this that I you know, just not being an expert,
- 9:27Speaker 6: but I'm guessing that version three will be one better
- 9:30Speaker 6: than version two. That's just my I'm just putting this
- 9:33Speaker 6: out there because I think version two was one better
- 9:38Speaker 6: than version one. That's just been my experience in observing
- 9:41Speaker 6: all of this. Now it's been significantly better in that Hey,
- 9:44Speaker 6: we've had success. I mean I know that SpaceX would
- 9:49Speaker 6: say we had success with the others because this is
- 9:51Speaker 6: the way we do science, as we blow things up
- 9:54Speaker 6: and then go, oh, let's don't blow the next one up.
- 9:56Speaker 6: And even if it blows up again, they go, well,
- 9:58Speaker 6: it blow up for a different reason, and now we
- 9:59Speaker 6: know how to fix that. So it's just all part
- 10:02Speaker 6: of the way they science.
- 10:04Speaker 7: Yeah, and you know, I'm no mathematician, but two is
- 10:07Speaker 7: at least double one, that's right, And on most occasions
- 10:10Speaker 7: three is considered thirty three point three percent better than two.
- 10:14Speaker 7: So you know, this is just simple math.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Check me if you want with your calculator on your phone.
- 10:18Speaker 6: And for our gen Z and gen Alpha crowd, hang
- 10:23Speaker 6: in there. We'll eventually get to versions six'. SEVEN i
- 10:27Speaker 6: Think i'm using that. RIGHT i don't. Know i'm not
- 10:28Speaker 6: cool enough for all those six seven. Jokes but, anyway,
- 10:31Speaker 6: well this is all good because we are making that.
- 10:34Speaker 6: Progress AND i say we just we're observing, it and,
- 10:38Speaker 6: collectively it's nice to see these private companies AND nasa
- 10:44Speaker 6: working together to help make all this eventually become the
- 10:47Speaker 6: dream of you, know putting, feet actual boots on the.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Ground on other.
- 10:54Speaker 6: In one, case the, moon in another Case. MARS i
- 10:57Speaker 6: mean that's what the other long term goal we're working on.
- 11:00Speaker 1: For all of this.
- 11:01Speaker 6: Stuff so this is. Exciting it's an exciting. Time we're
- 11:04Speaker 6: back in a moon, race, right.
- 11:06Speaker 3: It, is it really.
- 11:07Speaker 7: Is and, listen we joke on this, show but this
- 11:10Speaker 7: is a seriously important endeavor for The United states Of
- 11:14Speaker 7: america and The american space. Program and you know what
- 11:20Speaker 7: other segment Of american society is working quite as well AS.
- 11:25Speaker 7: SpaceX i, mean there probably are, Some i'm just not
- 11:28Speaker 7: thinking of, them but but they're not, many, RIGHT i,
- 11:32Speaker 7: mean we are living in an exciting, time, friends because
- 11:37Speaker 7: we're living in a time Where american engineers and rocket
- 11:43Speaker 7: scientists and you, know maybe kids that you knew growing
- 11:47Speaker 7: up that went often and got engineering, degrees and now
- 11:50Speaker 7: we're working AT SpaceX AND i know some of. Those
- 11:53Speaker 7: i've gotten an opportunity to meet some of those. Folks
- 11:56Speaker 7: they're making it. Happen and so to see all of
- 12:01Speaker 7: The falcon nine successful launches again and, again it's so
- 12:05Speaker 7: common THAT SpaceX has a Successful falcon nine launch from
- 12:11Speaker 7: the general area of The Kennedy Space, center that it's
- 12:13Speaker 7: not even worth news, Anymore like we don't even.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Cover it on the.
- 12:16Speaker 7: Podcast it's, like oh, yeah AND SpaceX launched three more
- 12:19Speaker 7: rockets since we were with you last and we do
- 12:21Speaker 7: a weekly show and it's really about the, cadence, right
- 12:25Speaker 7: it's like every two to three. Days so that's become
- 12:30Speaker 7: so commonplace that it's no longer. Newsworthy that in itself is.
- 12:35Speaker 7: Amazing and then when you see the largest and most
- 12:39Speaker 7: powerful rocket in human history launch from what used to
- 12:45Speaker 7: be Called Boca, Chica texas now It's star Based texas
- 12:49Speaker 7: and complete all these milestone successfully on its way to
- 12:54Speaker 7: Helping americans return to the surface of The. Moon and,
- 12:57Speaker 7: yes we're going to take A canadian along with, us
- 12:59Speaker 7: because let's just face, it we Like. Canada we like
- 13:02Speaker 7: those people up. THERE i know there's been some spats
- 13:05Speaker 7: in the news, lately but we like The. Canadians let's
- 13:09Speaker 7: take them to the. Moon they're going to ride along with,
- 13:11Speaker 7: us all. Right so the whole point of this idea
- 13:14Speaker 7: is that we are succeeding in these endeavors As, americans
- 13:19Speaker 7: and it's an important thing both industrially and, yes through
- 13:23Speaker 7: our governmental, programs they're working. Together that partnership is. WORKING
- 13:28Speaker 7: i can't tell you something really that's. Working WHAT i
- 13:32Speaker 7: would say better than that, partnership because it's that partnership
- 13:35Speaker 7: seems to be working really.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Well for the, record my mother in law was born In.
- 13:40Speaker 6: Canada so we Love canadians here on this, show no
- 13:43Speaker 6: doubt we Love.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Canadians who doesn't Love.
- 13:46Speaker 8: CANADIANS i, mean think of the Band, RUSH i, Mean William. Shatner,
- 13:51Speaker 8: well my wife is technically like Half, canadian and my
- 13:54Speaker 8: kids are Core canadian by that, Logic so we're Big
- 13:57Speaker 8: canadian fans in this.
- 13:59Speaker 1: House that's All i'm.
- 13:59Speaker 3: SAYING i, MEAN i you, KNOW i love a good you,
- 14:05Speaker 3: know maple leaf now and.
- 14:06Speaker 6: AGAIN i just watched The John candy, documentary by the,
- 14:09Speaker 6: way that's On prime and it is.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Fantastic one of the Great.
- 14:12Speaker 6: Canadians Tim Horton's Tim, Horton, Well, TIMONS i, mean you,
- 14:16Speaker 6: know keep a box of tissues handy if you watch
- 14:19Speaker 6: The John candy, documentary even though you know how it,
- 14:21Speaker 6: ends just keeps some tissues.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Handy that's All i'm, saying.
- 14:24Speaker 7: So, LOOK i did see that thing posted to that
- 14:26Speaker 7: that as my. ATTENTION i haven't seen it, yet BUT
- 14:28Speaker 7: i really do want it's really very very.
- 14:30Speaker 6: Good all, Right let's now work our way to the
- 14:33Speaker 6: story that we kind of tease at the, beginning because
- 14:36Speaker 6: this is one of those news.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Things when it popped, up.
- 14:38Speaker 6: It was, like, huh wait a, minute what because not
- 14:43Speaker 6: often do you see like, this especially when it comes
- 14:47Speaker 6: to like, okay because there's so many people that you would, think,
- 14:49Speaker 6: oh this person could head UP. Nasa there's a lot
- 14:52Speaker 6: of qualified people that could do, it but there's one
- 14:55Speaker 6: in particular that when we had this new presidency and
- 14:59Speaker 6: all these names start getting popped around and we Hear
- 15:02Speaker 6: Jared isagman's name to head UP, nasa the pick by
- 15:06Speaker 6: The trump, administration you, go.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Well this is like the perfect.
- 15:10Speaker 6: One there's no one better coming in from the private,
- 15:14Speaker 6: side with lots of work on the private, side someone
- 15:17Speaker 6: who's been to space multiple, times someone who has big
- 15:21Speaker 6: picture ideas long. TERM i, mean this just seemed like
- 15:24Speaker 6: exactly that bridge that kind of comes like we just
- 15:28Speaker 6: talked about in the previous, story when you start talking
- 15:31Speaker 6: ABOUT nasa AND sls and you start talking ABOUT, SpaceX
- 15:34Speaker 6: all of these long term. Projects the guy Was Jared,
- 15:37Speaker 6: isagman and you AND i just, did, LIKE i think
- 15:40Speaker 6: we did a whole show about how Great jarediagman would
- 15:43Speaker 6: be to head UP, nasa and then all of a
- 15:45Speaker 6: sudden one day it was just like you could hear
- 15:49Speaker 6: the breakes just you, know and you could hear the truck,
- 15:52Speaker 6: skidding and we're, like wait a, minute he is no
- 15:56Speaker 6: longer in consideration to head UP. Nasa and then you, go,
- 16:00Speaker 6: oh it seemed like that was the guy that was
- 16:03Speaker 6: the perfect.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Guy, WELL.
- 16:06Speaker 6: I don't know that you get many chances to go
- 16:08Speaker 6: back and get a do, over but it seems at
- 16:10Speaker 6: least his name is back in. Conversation SO i GUESS
- 16:14Speaker 6: i would ask you, this AND i don't know if
- 16:16Speaker 6: you know the answer to, This but is it because
- 16:19Speaker 6: Like i'm just an idiot for thinking there's lots of qualified,
- 16:22Speaker 6: people or is it because he was that good of
- 16:24Speaker 6: a Pick and now they're, going, well maybe we need
- 16:27Speaker 6: to revisit.
- 16:28Speaker 7: This, well you, know there's not so many qualified people
- 16:31Speaker 7: out there that they're in my circle of, friends, Right
- 16:34Speaker 7: like none of them are having spuds and SuDS with.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Me if you know What i'm. Saying that's.
- 16:38Speaker 7: Fair SO i, mean AND i know some really cool,
- 16:41Speaker 7: people But i'm just not sure we're that good of.
- 16:44Speaker 7: Friends so DON'T i don't think that there are a
- 16:49Speaker 7: vast number of people that have the kinds of resume
- 16:53Speaker 7: points That Jared isaacman.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Has let's just say it this.
- 16:56Speaker 7: Way in all the history OF, nasa there have been
- 17:01Speaker 7: only two administrators OF, nasa only two who've actually been to,
- 17:05Speaker 7: space and That's Bill nelson And Richard, truly both. Astronauts
- 17:12Speaker 7: and of Course Bill nelson was a senator before he
- 17:15Speaker 7: was an, astronaut so he's like a senator that went
- 17:17Speaker 7: to space and became an. Astronaut Richard truly, was you,
- 17:21Speaker 7: know actually an astronaut. First, Right so and we make these,
- 17:25Speaker 7: distinctions we argue about who's an astronaut and who's. Not
- 17:28Speaker 7: and we Have Katy perry in the mix Of Bill
- 17:30Speaker 7: nelson also Also, canadian, right, yeah, TRUE i hadn't thought
- 17:36Speaker 7: about that yet Another canadian in today's. Conversation So Bill
- 17:40Speaker 7: nelson's not a not A Katie perry type almost went
- 17:44Speaker 7: to space person Like Katy. Perry, Like, OKAY i Know
- 17:48Speaker 7: i'm arguing a point from a previous. Show Katy perry
- 17:51Speaker 7: is some kind of an astronaut in my, Book, yeah,
- 17:54Speaker 7: no was brave enough to strap herself to A Blue
- 17:58Speaker 7: origin rocket and get lifted above The carmen. LINE i
- 18:03Speaker 7: Think Katie perry doesn't get enough. CREDIT i fall on that, side,
- 18:06Speaker 7: Okay But Bill nelson was a legit trained WITH nasa
- 18:11Speaker 7: astronaut who spent time aboard The Space shuttle right in.
- 18:15Speaker 7: Orbit so the whole point of that is only two of.
- 18:18Speaker 7: Them So Jared isaacman has already been to. Space he
- 18:23Speaker 7: was the first ever commercial astronaut to do a spacewalk IN.
- 18:27Speaker 7: Eva he's been to an altitude that is beyond the
- 18:35Speaker 7: altitude of most astronauts That i've ever been up to space.
- 18:38Speaker 7: Before so one of his two missions went really far
- 18:41Speaker 7: away from The, earth like not halfway to The, moon
- 18:43Speaker 7: but far a high orbit above The, earth which is
- 18:47Speaker 7: one of the necessary things to go to The.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Moon the point, is the.
- 18:51Speaker 7: Dude has been, there, right he understands what it, takes
- 18:54Speaker 7: what kind of courage it, takes and what kind of
- 18:57Speaker 7: belief in the engineering system you have to have to
- 19:01Speaker 7: strap yourself into a seat and go to. Space so to,
- 19:06Speaker 7: me that's a really good resume point because he knows
- 19:12Speaker 7: he's going to be in charge of a program that's
- 19:13Speaker 7: going to put other people in that same, position and
- 19:16Speaker 7: keeping the engineering integrity very high and the safety standards
- 19:20Speaker 7: very high.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Would be a top.
- 19:22Speaker 7: Priority in addition to, that he's also a pretty smart.
- 19:25Speaker 7: Dude he made himself a billionaire in the industries around,
- 19:32Speaker 7: aviation so there's that. Too and and, yeah he does
- 19:39Speaker 7: have this kind of relationship With Elon musk because the
- 19:41Speaker 7: vehicles that he flew onto space WERE SpaceX. Vehicles, NOW
- 19:47Speaker 7: i Think isacman himself kind of dialed, back like how
- 19:51Speaker 7: close are friends that he And elon really?
- 19:53Speaker 3: Were he's, like, well, LOOK i worked with the.
- 19:55Speaker 7: GUY i know the, guy AND i think he might
- 19:58Speaker 7: have said something to the effect OF i don't think
- 20:00Speaker 7: we have spuds and SuDS together that.
- 20:02Speaker 3: OFTEN i don't think he really said that along those.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Lines he's, like if.
- 20:07Speaker 6: He amazing, coincidence he's not going.
- 20:09Speaker 1: To be at my daughter's.
- 20:10Speaker 7: Wedding but you, know it's like we know each other
- 20:12Speaker 7: right because we've worked. Together that's the.
- 20:14Speaker 3: Thing he's like a work friend Of Elon.
- 20:16Speaker 7: Musk so SO i think That Jared eisaman himself has
- 20:21Speaker 7: a list of criteria on his resume that would make
- 20:24Speaker 7: him an OUTSTANDING nasa. Director and, Listen wes AND i
- 20:29Speaker 7: said these things on a previous show where we were
- 20:33Speaker 7: where we were considering his nomination the first, time, right
- 20:36Speaker 7: and so SO i just want to come back and
- 20:39Speaker 7: say this again. Now so here's what's been reported In.
- 20:42Speaker 7: Reuters there's a couple other outlets of the report of.
- 20:45Speaker 7: This reuters dot com had these.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Facts two.
- 20:48Speaker 7: Things number, One isaac been met last week With President
- 20:51Speaker 7: trump to talk about a reconsideration for the post OF nasa.
- 20:56Speaker 7: Administrator number, two after having spoken with pros And, Trump
- 21:01Speaker 7: isaacman met with the ACTING nasa, administrator who Is Sean
- 21:04Speaker 7: duffy last week sometime as a, candidate an official candidate
- 21:11Speaker 7: for leading the space. Agency so says A nasa. Spokesperson
- 21:16Speaker 7: who did they say that To? Reuters check Out reuters
- 21:19Speaker 7: dot com for the. Story what are the Implications Wes
- 21:24Speaker 7: wes said. Something i'm going to go it's hardly ever
- 21:26Speaker 7: that We i'm gonna go ahead and go with never
- 21:29Speaker 7: WE i don't believe we've ever seen somebody who's been,
- 21:34Speaker 7: well what's the word DECONSIDERED i don't know from the consideration,
- 21:41Speaker 7: process like booted from. CONSIDERATION i don't think we've ever
- 21:46Speaker 7: seen anybody booted from consideration FOR nasa. Administrator that just
- 21:51Speaker 7: a few months later was, like, okay well let's talk
- 21:52Speaker 7: about that.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Again maybe we were wrong the first.
- 21:55Speaker 7: Time and, yes things are unusual right.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Now, Friends DC's a weird.
- 21:59Speaker 7: Place things are happening that don't usually, happen and now
- 22:03Speaker 7: is when we record the, show the place doesn't even.
- 22:05Speaker 6: Open that's, true AND i kind of it kind of made.
- 22:07Speaker 6: Well ONE i was kind of, thinking like in any
- 22:10Speaker 6: sort of like cabinet position or one of these appointed,
- 22:13Speaker 6: positions like it being very rare for them to get,
- 22:15Speaker 6: revisited not SPECIFICALLY, nasa but but, yes as the government
- 22:20Speaker 6: shut down right, NOW i would imagine that The Transportation
- 22:25Speaker 6: Secretary Sean duffy has a lot going on right, now
- 22:29Speaker 6: but he probably would happily UNLOAD nasa. Somewhere SO i
- 22:33Speaker 6: think there's, probably you, know there's probably some SOME i
- 22:38Speaker 6: guess encouragement on his part to find the right. Candidate
- 22:42Speaker 6: AND i don't, know maybe that's how you come across and,
- 22:44Speaker 6: go did we have anybody in this pile that was
- 22:47Speaker 6: really good. Before, yeah why did we not go with this?
- 22:50Speaker 1: Guy, listen we.
- 22:51Speaker 7: Can only imagine in these, conversations but it's. Comical it's
- 22:54Speaker 7: comical to.
- 22:54Speaker 3: Do, so and we like comedy here on our.
- 22:56Speaker 7: Podcast so just Imagine Sean duffy walking Into President trump's
- 23:00Speaker 7: office one day and, Saying, Uh President, TRUMP i do
- 23:04Speaker 7: HAVE i do have one idea for a POSSIBLE nasa. Administrator,
- 23:08Speaker 7: yeah there's this fellow.
- 23:10Speaker 3: By the name Of.
- 23:10Speaker 7: Isaacman have you considered this not you've heard of?
- 23:14Speaker 1: Him have you considered this? Guy he seems like he
- 23:18Speaker 1: might be a good.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Guy you.
- 23:20Speaker 7: KNOW i was just recently looking over his resume and
- 23:22Speaker 7: it seems to check off many of the boxes that
- 23:25Speaker 7: we're looking, For, sir when we want to RECONSIDER i,
- 23:27Speaker 7: mean DO i say, RECONSIDERED i mean consider someone for
- 23:30Speaker 7: the post OF nasa. Administrator Perhaps Jared, isisagman who's actually
- 23:35Speaker 7: been to?
- 23:35Speaker 3: Space is a is a good? Consideration what do you,
- 23:38Speaker 3: think Mister? President what do you?
- 23:40Speaker 5: Think who's that?
- 23:41Speaker 6: Guy?
- 23:41Speaker 7: Again? Isagman? YEAH i don't, know if you say?
- 23:44Speaker 1: So he talk to that?
- 23:46Speaker 6: Guy does he have any good uh like a letter
- 23:48Speaker 6: of recommendation from anybody we, know anything like?
- 23:50Speaker 1: That that maybe he's.
- 23:52Speaker 7: Huge anybody vouched for in the aerospace, industry he's?
- 23:55Speaker 6: Huge could anybody vouch for him at? ALL i think
- 23:58Speaker 6: there's a.
- 23:59Speaker 3: Guy would do we have any references on?
- 24:02Speaker 6: FILE i have to correct myself BECAUSE i let us
- 24:07Speaker 6: down a path that was completely. Wrong Katie perry born
- 24:10Speaker 6: In Santa, Barbara. CALIFORNIA i blew that. One she just
- 24:14Speaker 6: Feels canadian because you, know she's Dating Justin. Trudeau SO
- 24:18Speaker 6: i think maybe that's maybe that's why in my BRAIN
- 24:21Speaker 6: i thought she's got to Be. Canadian, right there's a
- 24:23Speaker 6: Little canadian in there.
- 24:24Speaker 3: Somewhere there you.
- 24:25Speaker 6: Go coming up after a quick, break we will talk
- 24:29Speaker 6: about an interesting payload that landed FROM nasa that landed In.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Texas we'll do that.
- 24:36Speaker 9: Next oh, goodness it's my favorite joke of the.
- 24:59Speaker 1: SHOW i think we you've ever. HAD i love. IT
- 25:01Speaker 1: i absolutely love.
- 25:02Speaker 6: It All, right let's talk about THIS nasa payload that
- 25:05Speaker 6: just fell out of the sky on a ranch In West.
- 25:08Speaker 7: Texas, well first of, all you live In West. Texas
- 25:10Speaker 7: let's just set the story up. Right imagine yourself living
- 25:13Speaker 7: In have you Visited West?
- 25:14Speaker 6: TEXAS i have, not BUT i imagine they listened To Marty,
- 25:17Speaker 6: robbins a lot there.
- 25:18Speaker 7: Probably, PROBABLY i, would you, know out in The odessa
- 25:22Speaker 7: area WHICH i, visited there's there are some lovely people
- 25:25Speaker 7: who live in The odessa, area AND i hope some
- 25:28Speaker 7: of them do listen to the.
- 25:29Speaker 3: PODCAST i think that they're.
- 25:30Speaker 7: Probably willing to admit that it would be a pretty
- 25:33Speaker 7: good place to Do mars. Simulations it's a really, flat dusty,
- 25:38Speaker 7: prairie just like kind of not too many people out,
- 25:42Speaker 7: there like On mars. Almost and so so here's the.
- 25:45Speaker 7: Thing imagine you're living there and suddenly you see something
- 25:48Speaker 7: floating down from the sky and it's not something. Small it's,
- 25:53Speaker 7: big and it's an. Object it's slowly drifting across the,
- 25:57Speaker 7: sky but it's doing so in a decent.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Manner it's coming.
- 26:01Speaker 7: Down. Now this story has been reported in lots of.
- 26:04Speaker 7: Locations i'm going to be QUOTING Ap. News so according
- 26:07Speaker 7: TO Ap, news a lady by the name Of Ann
- 26:10Speaker 7: walter was looking outside her Rural West texas home when
- 26:14Speaker 7: she saw something large drifting across the sky in a
- 26:17Speaker 7: way that it was allowing it to descend into her
- 26:21Speaker 7: neighbor's wheat. Field and this this, thing upon further, inspection
- 26:26Speaker 7: once it got to the, GROUND i, guess and and
- 26:29Speaker 7: her neighbor went out and looked at. It it's a
- 26:32Speaker 7: big piece of scientific equipment and it has these stickers
- 26:36Speaker 7: all over, it and THEY'RE nasa. Stickers and this thing's
- 26:39Speaker 7: attached to a. Parachute it's about the size of an
- 26:43Speaker 7: suv and it's just sitting out in the dusty wheat
- 26:47Speaker 7: field Of West, texas Near Anne walter's. Home so she
- 26:52Speaker 7: did what anyone would do on something like, this called law.
- 26:56Speaker 7: Enforcement we're being. Invaded oh, no, wait THERE'S nasa. Sticker
- 27:00Speaker 7: so upon calling the local sheriff's, office she learned THAT
- 27:03Speaker 7: nasa was indeed looking for a missing piece of. Equipment,
- 27:09Speaker 7: hey we lost. Something if anybody out there reports this
- 27:13Speaker 7: coveany let us. Know. Okay, so according To nwalter, quote
- 27:19Speaker 7: it's crazy because when you're standing on the ground and
- 27:22Speaker 7: see something in the, air you don't realize how big it.
- 27:25Speaker 7: Is it was probably a thirty foot. Parachute it was.
- 27:30Speaker 7: Huge and what she found out is that later she
- 27:33Speaker 7: got a call from NASA's Columbia Scientific Balloon. Facility it's
- 27:40Speaker 7: not a space. Payload, REMEMBER nasa is The National aeronautics
- 27:45Speaker 7: And Space. Administration, well there's the aeronautics part in there.
- 27:49Speaker 7: Too they do things in the atmosphere like airplanes and
- 27:52Speaker 7: balloons and study the atmospheric. Effects, Right so this was
- 27:56Speaker 7: A nasa scientific payload designed to study the atmosphere of The.
- 28:00Speaker 7: Earth it probably flown something on the order of twenty
- 28:03Speaker 7: miles into space toward, space not into space toward, space
- 28:08Speaker 7: but then it came down In West. Texas it was
- 28:13Speaker 7: launched from THAT Nasa Columbia Scientific Balloon, facility which is
- 28:16Speaker 7: In Fort, Sumner New, mexico about one hundred and forty
- 28:20Speaker 7: miles west Of West. Texas and by the, way if
- 28:24Speaker 7: you go To West texas and then you go west
- 28:25Speaker 7: one hundred and forty, miles.
- 28:26Speaker 3: You're really in The.
- 28:27Speaker 7: West, Friends you're deep in The west by that, point
- 28:30Speaker 7: just so you'd know, Anyway so this is kind of
- 28:33Speaker 7: A western. Tail it's A western tail of, Cowboys West,
- 28:36Speaker 7: texas an adventure and a GIANT nasa payload that landed
- 28:40Speaker 7: in somebody's. Field yet they got a little bit out of.
- 28:42Speaker 7: Control they did lose track of. It they couldn't figure
- 28:44Speaker 7: out where it came. Down thank you To Anne walter
- 28:47Speaker 7: and her neighbor for reporting this MASSIVE nasa payload which
- 28:51Speaker 7: drifted into a farm In West.
- 28:53Speaker 6: Texas fun, fact the Song El paso By Marty robbins
- 28:57Speaker 6: tells you the entire plot To Breaking. Bad, seriously he
- 29:02Speaker 6: just kind of modeled the whole show after the Song El,
- 29:05Speaker 6: paso which is kind of fascinating but, anyway.
- 29:08Speaker 1: More made of. Stars right after, this.
- 29:31Speaker 6: All, right let's talk About, aurora because we've been following
- 29:35Speaker 6: some solar activity and here we. Go looks like we
- 29:38Speaker 6: could be seeing Some. Aurora maybe not this far, south
- 29:42Speaker 6: but at least parts of THE.
- 29:43Speaker 7: Us regular listeners will know THAT i absolutely love talking
- 29:46Speaker 7: About aurora and just solar phenomenon in. General But i'm
- 29:50Speaker 7: still trying to wrap my head About West, Texas El
- 29:53Speaker 7: paso And Breaking. Bad i'm gonna have to go listen
- 29:55Speaker 7: to that song again and just like like relive the
- 29:59Speaker 7: plot of of the.
- 30:01Speaker 6: Series just know That, fellina the girl is you, know blue,
- 30:05Speaker 6: meth just just fill, in like replace. That and then
- 30:09Speaker 6: he even named the finale of the Show, fellina which
- 30:12Speaker 6: of course you rearrange the letters to spell finale and.
- 30:16Speaker 3: It's, it.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Dude it is so amazing.
- 30:18Speaker 6: When you listen to it and you go hang on
- 30:20Speaker 6: wait a, minute, anyway.
- 30:22Speaker 7: To all that was trying to actually listen to this.
- 30:23Speaker 7: Podcast i'm sorry we got interrupted, here but that thought
- 30:25Speaker 7: has just blown my.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Mind, yeah, yeah it's pretty pretty darn.
- 30:29Speaker 7: Good at one point in my, Life i've worked in
- 30:31Speaker 7: A west The western theme park AND i heard that
- 30:34Speaker 7: song approximately eighteen times a, week and so Now i'm
- 30:38Speaker 7: at to just reconsider all those.
- 30:39Speaker 3: Lyrics thank You wes for rocking my. WORLD i appreciate.
- 30:42Speaker 1: It it's JUST i didn't even catch.
- 30:44Speaker 6: It LIKE i, MEAN i remember the name of the,
- 30:46Speaker 6: show the finale Being fellina going, Huh and then there's
- 30:50Speaker 6: even a point in the show where he's listening to
- 30:52Speaker 6: the song and you, go wait a, minute this guy
- 30:55Speaker 6: laid it all out for us and.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Everything, anyway that was so.
- 30:58Speaker 7: Good i'm sure that's like people are out there on
- 31:01Speaker 7: the area and, going, yeah you haven't heard that one,
- 31:03Speaker 7: before but APPARENTLY i. Haven't so that's news to, me
- 31:07Speaker 7: even though it's probably not news in a news.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Sense, hey you know what is news this very?
- 31:11Speaker 7: Night as we're recording this Podcast, tonight all you listeners
- 31:15Speaker 7: who have the bell set and get an immediate notification
- 31:18Speaker 7: tonight be watching For aurora phenomenon across the lower forty
- 31:22Speaker 7: eight because The sun has been belching out some coronal
- 31:27Speaker 7: mass ejections over the last few, days and they're moving
- 31:29Speaker 7: in such a way that they're gonna. Combine some fast
- 31:34Speaker 7: ones came out after some slow, ones and as they
- 31:36Speaker 7: move from The sun to The, earth they're all going to.
- 31:40Speaker 7: Combine the fast ones catching up with the preview preceding slow.
- 31:44Speaker 7: Ones they're all going to combine right here at The
- 31:46Speaker 7: earth and possibly trigger A g two class geomagnetic storm
- 31:50Speaker 7: to night as they. Arrive, so particularly listeners in the
- 31:53Speaker 7: northern tier Of. States But, wes you AND i have
- 31:56Speaker 7: heard that. Before we, Have, yes we've heard it before
- 31:59Speaker 7: when they, said, oh, hey northern Interier, states be. Watching
- 32:02Speaker 7: but then down here in The south where you AND i,
- 32:04Speaker 7: live we've we've seen some northern lights in the last eighteen, months,
- 32:09Speaker 7: RIGHT i, mean we've seen some, stuff and so so
- 32:12Speaker 7: we like to tell all of our listeners just keep
- 32:15Speaker 7: an eye on. Things, now how do you keep an
- 32:17Speaker 7: eye on? Things, well obviously you can just run outside
- 32:21Speaker 7: in some kind of LIKE ocd, man or just continue
- 32:24Speaker 7: to look at the sky throughout the early, evening or
- 32:27Speaker 7: you can sign up for text messages alerts from spaceweather
- 32:31Speaker 7: dot com And i'm not advertising for. Them i'm just
- 32:34Speaker 7: saying that service is. Available or there's another website called
- 32:37Speaker 7: spaceweather live dot com and on space weatherlive dot com
- 32:43Speaker 7: you can just look at the numbers for yourself and
- 32:46Speaker 7: if those numbers get into the favorable, category.
- 32:49Speaker 3: Which by the, way all that's explained on the.
- 32:51Speaker 7: Website if they get into the favorable, category then you
- 32:53Speaker 7: can run outside in AN ocd manner and look up
- 32:56Speaker 7: at the sky and perhaps catch northern lights in your. Neighborhood,
- 33:00Speaker 7: friends this is fun for the entire. Family make sure
- 33:03Speaker 7: you share it with your children and the neighbors and
- 33:06Speaker 7: anybody who doesn't run away from you when you begin
- 33:08Speaker 7: talking about these things.
- 33:09Speaker 3: Like they do.
- 33:10Speaker 7: Me but, anyway just enjoy a possible geomagnetic storm tonight
- 33:15Speaker 7: with some potential beautiful northern lights appearing over the.
