- 0:00Hey, it's Tay Hamilton and we recently got to catch up with Carly Pierce.
- 0:03We were lucky enough to do it in front of a live audience downtown
- 0:06Nashville inside Jason Alden's Kitchen and rooftop bar. Here it is. My name
- 0:10is Wayne d. She is Tay from The Big ninety eight and iHeartRadio.
- 0:13We appreciate you all joining us at Jason al Dean's kitchen a rooftop bar.
- 0:17We have an amazing opportunity here to get you up close and personal with some
- 0:22artists and sometimes are brand new artists who you walk out afterwards and go,
- 0:26who the hell was that again? And then there's times that we can bring
- 0:30legit award winners in here whose names are forever written in country music history,
- 0:36all right, but also not just any awards Grammy. That's a big deal,
- 0:41ladies and gentlemen. Carly Pearce, Hey, it's awkward if it's quiet
- 0:56now, so a little more please, okay, listen. I appreciate you
- 1:04guys. Hello, I appreciate the cameras, but these sorts are shorter than
- 1:11I realized. So, oh boy, I don't have an OnlyFans yet,
- 1:17so I'm gonna tell you we had the first opportunity to meet Carly. Uh,
- 1:25I'm telling you so long ago. She started as an on the verge
- 1:27artist without the country and and artists do what are called radio tours, So
- 1:32before you ever hear them on the radio, before you're ever streaming their music,
- 1:34they do what's called a radio tour where they literally carry their guitar and
- 1:40visit three different cities in a day. Yeah. So uh, she won't
- 1:47say it, but it's honestly hell on an artist, And you can tell,
- 1:49uh, what give us that experience? You're far past it. But
- 1:53you're walking in the door as a brand new artist, you just signed a
- 1:56record deal and you're out meeting country radio. What's it like interdu sing yourself
- 2:00as a new artist. I mean, you have no idea what you're doing.
- 2:05You're walking in and you're playing these performances for people at the radio station.
- 2:09But like they invite everybody that is working at the radio station. And
- 2:13sometimes it's like during lunch hour, so I remember singing every little thing,
- 2:16like while a guy was heating his pizza. Sometimes they just get up and
- 2:22leave. But I mean it was chaotic, like truly, I was maybe
- 2:29on flight like three different cities sometimes it felt like three different states, and
- 2:34you're just kind of trying to capitalize on this moment that you get with the
- 2:39people that could change your life, and you're like very nervous about it and
- 2:43very just kind of overwhelmed of oh my gosh, I have to make a
- 2:46good impression. So it's kind of like a first date, like three times
- 2:50a day for I don't know, eight weeks. I heard that calm down
- 2:54over here, this single guy over here, you reel it in well.
- 2:58And now fast forward to now you've been doing this now for quite some time.
- 3:02What would you say are the best things about your job and the worst
- 3:07things? Now? I mean the best things are that my job doesn't feel
- 3:13like a job, that I get to just perform and write songs and I
- 3:19don't know, just to get to perform every day, and people care about
- 3:23what you have to say. I would say the hardest or the worst thing
- 3:24about it is just your life is kind of not your own anymore. So,
- 3:30so like time at your home is very few and far between, and
- 3:35it's just harder to have a little bit of normalcy, if that makes sense.
- 3:38Speaking of normalcy, how many of y'all were around for CMA fest.
- 3:43Okay, do you live here? Are you still here? Okay? I
- 3:46was gonna say, if you're still here, goal to hell home. But
- 3:52Carly speaking of like her life isn't her own anything an artist does lives forever
- 3:57now right, we were just talking about a afest and I'm going to give
- 4:00you the chance to clear the air here. Uh, she was in front,
- 4:04so give us a back. Any y'all check out TMZ on a regular
- 4:08basis. No, that's not. You're the one proud person a celebrities failing
- 4:14at life. I'm there daily. No, it's fine, it's fine,
- 4:18we're not judging you. She's drunk, She's like, yeah, But so
- 4:23tell us about the picture that went crazy viral and is a massive misunderstanding.
- 4:27I posted a picture of me outside of my tour bus getting ready to play
- 4:30the stadium, and the you know, there's apparently an underground satanic cult in
- 4:39the entertainment industry, and there was a six six eight, but fans thought
- 4:46it said six sixty six, and everybody was like, Carly's a devil worshiper.
- 4:48And I was like, of anybody me really? And you really think?
- 4:55So? I had to go and I made it to TMZ because of
- 4:58my Satanic's tendencies, you know. Yeah, She's like I know, I
- 5:02saw I printed the page. When you sign it and like me and my
- 5:05like rhinestones, I'm like, yo, mass satan. No, I'll be
- 5:10honest. The Devil would send her straight back to us. I probably he'd
- 5:14be like, she's too high maintenance, get her out. That's like the
- 5:16weirdest thing you've ever seen. That's actually maybe the weirdest. And like the
- 5:19little picture on TMZ was like me looking like this on stage, Like they
- 5:24picked this really weird photo and then they had like the devil with his pitchfork,
- 5:28and I was just like this, this is new, this is new.
- 5:32Oh I will my mom? Were you worried? My mom was like,
- 5:35I'm proud of you for standing up for your faith. I was like,
- 5:39yeah, mom, I don't want people thinking I'm a devil worshiper.
- 5:43Well, so in between CMA Fest and now you're on tour with Timm gral
- 5:48standing room only tour. Now you're it's not a secret, right, We
- 5:54all see all of our social media that Tim McGraw is a health freak.
- 5:58He's constantly working out. Does he get you to work out with him?
- 6:01Is he like waking you up or in the mornings? No, I no
- 6:08joke. I mean I lifted his tire kind of as a joke, or
- 6:11I tried to, and it was so much heavier than I thought it was.
- 6:14It almost like knocked me over. So one time I had him show
- 6:17me how to lift the tire, and I joke because I came out that
- 6:20I had a heart issue right after that. So I think timmocgral broke my
- 6:24heart, like actually like killed me physically because I can't lift a tire.
- 6:28But no, I watch him from my bus at like three o'clock when I'm
- 6:31usually eating like a cookie, flipping tires and working out for like two hours.
- 6:39It's insane. So as an artist who is on tour, getting to
- 6:43open or be direct support for a guy like Tim McGraw is obviously a massive
- 6:46deal and probably pretty exciting. How do you hear news that you've been invited
- 6:51to that tour? I was getting my nails done and my manager called me
- 6:57and he was like, hey, timmcgral wants you to come on tour with
- 6:59him next year. And I had to be cool because I was in the
- 7:01nail salon and it was quiet. I was like, okay, I would
- 7:05like to do that, thank you so much, and that was it.
- 7:09It was like, great, I would like blue to nail polish. Well,
- 7:14you're also celebrating your fourth album, Hummingbird. Congratulations, Thank you.
- 7:18It's so dang good. But you were also a co producer on this album
- 7:23as well. Is that a new role for you? And what were like
- 7:27the responsibilities, Like, yeah, this is the first album that I've had
- 7:30any kind of co producer credit on. I grew up every single album that
- 7:36I bought, it was like who produced it, who wrote on it,
- 7:40who's playing on it? Who are the background singers? Like. I was
- 7:42always fascinated by all of that. And so as you continue on in the
- 7:46studio and you kind of find your sound, I think it's like only natural
- 7:49that probably the person that understands your sound the most is you. And I
- 7:54wrote all of these songs, so I feel like I kind of know how
- 7:57I want them to sound, and so it was just so much fun to
- 7:59get to kind of go in there and these I'm not a great musician,
- 8:03like I play guitar to be able to write, but I cannot play parts
- 8:07at all, but I hear things in my head, so just to be
- 8:09able to kind of like try to communicate those to the musicians and be like,
- 8:15I think this should be this And it was a really fun thing.
- 8:18One thing that I love about Carly is she, since day one, has
- 8:22been an open book. If you don't believe in a song, you don't
- 8:26feel a song, you don't write or perform the song. Part of that
- 8:30is being super vulnerable. Over the last handful of years, you have gone
- 8:35through a hell of a ride in life, but you took everybody with you.
- 8:39Could have easily shut the door, did what you needed to for you,
- 8:41and then swung it back open. Why was it important to kind of
- 8:45be a window for your fans while you were dealing with life. Well,
- 8:50I was writing in real time when all of this stuff was going on in
- 8:54my life, and it just did not feel natural. I remember some on
- 9:00my team being like, well, you could just like write a song about
- 9:03life and not about love, and I was like, yeah, because that
- 9:07makes sense as a newlywed, Okay, And that just kind of started this
- 9:15thought in my mind that if I'm going to be the type of artists that
- 9:20I want to be, which is honest. I have to just accept that
- 9:24the not so pretty parts of my life are going to come out right now,
- 9:28but in return have become some of the biggest pillars of what I feel
- 9:33like people have latched onto just to you know, I wrote this music feeling
- 9:39like I was the only one going through it, and in return, so
- 9:41many other people have been going through things like that or felt shame around things
- 9:46in their life that have happened. And now I feel like we've kind of
- 9:48all gotten stronger together, and I think about, oh, my gosh,
- 9:52if I wouldn't have just been honest. So it's kind of been my like
- 9:56the bar has been set for me of the type of of authenticity that I
- 10:01want to always convey. I'll take no more divorces. But you know,
- 10:07well now, in kind of a play on that, was there ever a
- 10:09time where you put out a song and maybe look back and you were like,
- 10:13ooh, maybe it was a little too vulnerable there? No, No,
- 10:20I feel like I remember driving, I'll never forget where I was.
- 10:24And I played my dad that this is before any of the twenty nine record
- 10:28was out, And I played my dad next girl, and he listened to
- 10:33it like this, and then at the end he just looked at me and
- 10:39he was like, you can't put that out And I was like, watch
- 10:43me. So no, I'm not afraid. I love it. Well,
- 10:50how many of y'all have had your heart broke before? Get okay, okay
- 10:56to y'all that were quiet right there? You need to be loved the all
- 11:00right, or own it? So I'm gonna try again. How many y'all
- 11:03had your heart broke before? So he's laughing because you're the heartbreaker, you
- 11:07bastard. That's fine, He's like, not me, bro get in,
- 11:13get out. You know what? Uh I that I did not? There's
- 11:18children. Every girl in here is gonna kill you, Wayne. It's fine.
- 11:22How therapeutic is it to hear fans latch on to words that were therapeutic
- 11:26for you to begin with? I mean it's been why I feel like I've
- 11:31been able to heal is because every and I wish I always say this,
- 11:35like, I wish that every single person who's ever had their heartbroken in the
- 11:39way that I did was able every single night to have this community of people,
- 11:45or go on Instagram and have hundreds of dms of stories that make you
- 11:50feel like you're not the only one going through it, and so it's been
- 11:52super healing and I think the only way that I've been able to kind of
- 11:58just move forward and get out of that phase of my life. We're getting
- 12:03ready to wrap things up here, but I wanted to talk to you because
- 12:05you've you've been through so many things in your career already, right the opry
- 12:11which you're at tonight. I am there is anybody coming from performing at the
- 12:15opera but also a Grammy winner. I just feel like you can't get any
- 12:20bigger than that, So, like, what's what's the next goal for you?
- 12:24I feel like more of the same. I just want to keep making
- 12:28music that continues to secure my place in country music. And I feel like
- 12:35all the if I like that. If you don't follow her on Instagram and
- 12:41Twitter and everything already, you should thank you so much. That's she's trying
- 12:46to get a picture at her bridal party. You just wrap it up.
- 12:50Oh is it your what? Oh it's your bachelorette? Oh girl, Yeah,
- 12:54we need to talk. I'm joking them a kid. Yeah, I
- 13:00mean all I ever wanted was to be in country music. So all of
- 13:03the greats that I feel like I look up to they continue to elevate,
- 13:05Tim mcgral being one of them. I mean, you think about it,
- 13:09he was a nineties country artist. How is that even possible when I feel
- 13:11like he's like hotter than ever. So, just continuing to make sure that
- 13:16I'm working really hard and maintaining what I got going on. You know,
- 13:22Uh, Carly put out a new album what Feels Like yesterday, But honestly
- 13:24it's been a week, couple week, week and a half. As your
- 13:31career continues and your life continues, what are some stories that you were really
- 13:35excited to tell with this new album. I think the biggest one is that,
- 13:41well, I guess too. I feel like Loretta Lynne, what she
- 13:46does better than anybody, or what she did better than anybody was she kind
- 13:50of had a humor to the really not so great parts of her life that
- 13:56happened to her. And I feel like this album, when you can attach
- 14:00to things that once you couldn't speak about because you were so traumatized by it,
- 14:05When you get to that humor part, that's growth and I think just
- 14:09showing people that you can have the greatest season of your life after what you
- 14:13thought was the end of your life, and that's the most important thing for
- 14:20me is it's like no, no, Like, I'm not here to just
- 14:22tell you like I lived it. Here's here's my thoughts on it. You
- 14:26know, I like that a lot. I want to ask when when we
- 14:30interview artists, it's a lot of like, here's a great awards you were
- 14:33nominated for, here's a great story about a song. I'm going to ask
- 14:37you to talk a little smack on yourself. At some point, at some
- 14:43point, you wrote a song or put a line in a song that you
- 14:46were like, this is ridiculous, but let's run with it. We just
- 14:50caught up with Old Dominion and they were talking about what is it the I'm
- 14:56gonna forget? It's something I was on a boat that day. It's had
- 15:00a drunk, had a drink with a cross eyed bear. However, the
- 15:03line goes, but is there a line in a song for you that you
- 15:07look back and you're like, well, it's there now, I guess Wow.
- 15:11I've never been asked that. That doesn't mean it's a good question,
- 15:16by the way, natally, it's a good I'm like, literally, I'm
- 15:22like, what are all the songs that I've written. I don't know,
- 15:30like I think some of my earlier songs, like one that comes to mind
- 15:33that I think, you know, I had the right intention, but it's
- 15:35kind of stupid, is no. I feel bad because you guys are gonna
- 15:39put this on the internet, send it to TMZ bro Color. Like I
- 15:43have a song called color and like the thought of you be the lines,
- 15:48I'll be the color. That's kind of stupid, but you know it's here,
- 15:52but it's like, that's kind of dumb. I don't know, Like
- 15:54it just feels like a little elementary to me. But I was young in
- 15:58elementary in my writing. So the new album is out. You have a
- 16:03lot of dates lined up in between now and the end of the year,
- 16:06But what are some things you're looking forward to as far as unplugging some days
- 16:08off and what do you do with your days off? I'm gonna I'm starting
- 16:14to write for my next record, which again that's another thing, like I
- 16:18took so much time to make this album because I just needed it. But
- 16:21now I feel really inspired and like excited about the next So I'm gonna do
- 16:25that. She just says she's gonna work with her time off y'all are cheering.
- 16:30It never ends, it never iss. That's awful for mental health.
- 16:33Hey, let me ask what do you do for mental health? I literally
- 16:37was like, that's coffee, I drink wine, I'm exercise. Like,
- 16:45that's a really good thing for me. Therapy, wine, my dogs.
- 16:48They're my emotional support system. But it's more important than ever right in country
- 16:56music to like make sure you're taking care of yourself away from the music,
- 17:00for sure. I mean, I think therapy has been something that's been really
- 17:06absolutely needed just to have a third party that I can speak to that has
- 17:10nothing to do with anything in my life. Sometimes you just need to be
- 17:12able to have that outlet, especially in a world where it's kind of like
- 17:17all the time. Yeah, how does that help too? With writing?
- 17:21I feel like I work out a lot of like details about my life that
- 17:26then are kind of unique song ideas. A lot of the Oklahoma or the
- 17:30Oklahoma I was thinking about the song Oklahoma. Songs like Oklahoma in My Place
- 17:36Pretty Please, Like those were talked about in therapy for sure before they were
- 17:41written. All Right, last question I want to ask is you have experienced
- 17:45some amazing things, probably things that were on your buck list, but like
- 17:48they're just there because they're there you maybe never thought you'd get to them.
- 17:52If you could pick an event or a day or an experience that that was
- 17:57the best day ever, what would it be? I would pick two.
- 18:07One when Dolly surprised me to be invited as a member of the opry,
- 18:15that was that was a good one. And then when I won a Female
- 18:19Vocalist of the Year, that was that was a good one. Those are
- 18:25good days, very good things. Hey, uh, how many of y'all
- 18:29are from Nashville. Dang, that's it, So the rest of y'all are
- 18:33visiting. Thank you for taking the time. Thank you for taking the time
- 18:37out. We appreciate you'all being here very much. Winnati, it's Cincinnati from
- 18:42that is insane. That's me. Northern Kentucky. Wait where are you from?
- 18:48It are you from Northern Kentucky? No? Fort Thomas I used to
- 18:53live in. Where did I live? Fort Mitchell? You a only know?
- 19:00I know, you only know if we appreciate your guys conversation. But
- 19:03there's a room full of people that don't care. Okay, we love you
- 19:07for it again. My name is Wayne d. She is Tay Hamilton,
- 19:11ladies and gentlemen, I want you to be as loud as you're gonna be
- 19:14on your whole vacation, as you make noise for Carly Pearce
