- 2:57Speaker 5: the office and it was ten fifty six pm when
- 2:59Speaker 5: we got to ten sixteen South Twelfth Street, the apex
- 3:03Speaker 5: Man's Shop.
- 3:07Speaker 6: Yes, Sir Friday and Romero, Central Homicide High de Cord.
- 3:12Speaker 7: Oh, yes, I've been waiting for you. My partner's upstairs
- 3:15Speaker 7: in the back talking.
- 3:15Speaker 5: To victim's wife. You answered the call. Dig Yeah, that's right.
- 3:18Speaker 7: Miles and Kiva, Unit sixteen are who are you?
- 3:21Speaker 5: Miles?
- 3:22Speaker 7: Kiva's talking to Missus Wilford, victim's wife. She found the body.
- 3:25Speaker 6: What's that up a blouve? How's that music up for somewhere?
- 3:28Speaker 6: Sounds like a party?
- 3:29Speaker 7: Oh yeah, well that's a dance place.
- 3:31Speaker 5: Takes a hole up the floor of the building.
- 3:33Speaker 6: Wonderland Dance Hall.
- 3:34Speaker 4: I think that's it.
- 3:35Speaker 5: When was the body find, Miles? You know?
- 3:37Speaker 7: Well, the wife wasn't very definite about it. She told
- 3:39Speaker 7: her she came in the shop here about ten o'clock tonight.
- 3:41Speaker 7: The place was wide open, nobody behind the counter said.
- 3:44Speaker 7: She looked around a while, finally found her husband's body
- 3:46Speaker 7: in the storeroom. Back there for a week's stomach's pretty brutal.
- 3:50Speaker 7: What else do you have to say?
- 3:52Speaker 5: Oh, not too much.
- 3:53Speaker 6: She's pretty close mouthed.
- 3:54Speaker 7: Probably the shock of finding her husband like that.
- 3:56Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 3:57Speaker 5: Do you want to show us where he is, Miles, Yeah,
- 3:59Speaker 5: it's straight back this way.
- 4:02Speaker 7: The victim's name is Joseph Wilford. Owned the store around
- 4:06Speaker 7: it himself. My wife says he's had the business here
- 4:08Speaker 7: for twenty three years. It's a typical men's shop. And
- 4:12Speaker 7: you can see that that's around the left in here. Okay,
- 4:17Speaker 7: go ahead, he used this for a storeroom.
- 4:20Speaker 6: I guess that's it. As far as we know the
- 4:28Speaker 6: body hasn't be touched.
- 4:29Speaker 9: Yeah, sure took a terrible being the elderly man.
- 4:33Speaker 7: My wife said he was sixty four last birthday. She
- 4:36Speaker 7: couldn't think of any enemies he has. Anybody want to
- 4:38Speaker 7: do this?
- 4:39Speaker 6: Where'd he keep his cash? Did she tell you that?
- 4:41Speaker 6: No cashratister?
- 4:42Speaker 7: I guess can't be sure the lighton Prince gets here?
- 4:44Speaker 5: Yeah? Did you call the crime lab yet? I wait
- 4:46Speaker 5: for you, Fellows. I want to call him now, would
- 4:48Speaker 5: you min sure? Sor say you might as well call
- 4:50Speaker 5: the coroner while you're at it. Tell him it's no
- 4:52Speaker 5: big rush.
- 4:52Speaker 10: Yeah right.
- 4:55Speaker 6: Take a look around here, Jill. It's like a tornado
- 4:59Speaker 6: ripped through.
- 5:00Speaker 9: Yeah, chair overturned, flows all over the floor. Yeah, however,
- 5:06Speaker 9: man look at the body. Yeah, his arms tied behind
- 5:11Speaker 9: his back.
- 5:12Speaker 6: Ordinary clothesline? Row? What's that cloth k nodding around his neck?
- 5:16Speaker 5: I don't know. Looks like it could be a woman's slip,
- 5:19Speaker 5: isn't it.
- 5:21Speaker 9: Whoever it was, they weren't taking any chances he lived
- 5:23Speaker 9: through it.
- 5:23Speaker 5: The wounds on.
- 5:24Speaker 6: The head here and the next thing, Yeah, looks like
- 5:27Speaker 6: he was stamped on by boots something like that. Maybe
- 5:31Speaker 6: a narrow heel show brutal.
- 5:33Speaker 5: He doesn't look too much like a robbery motive, not
- 5:36Speaker 5: from the beating he took, anyway, looks.
- 5:40Speaker 6: Like he might have had a taste for art all
- 5:42Speaker 6: over the wall here pin up girls, fancy counter the
- 5:46Speaker 6: crime lab.
- 5:47Speaker 7: On a way off?
- 5:48Speaker 5: Oh thanks Madams notified deputy corner.
- 5:50Speaker 6: Anything else I can do for you?
- 5:51Speaker 5: Yeah? Would you mind getting a wife down here? Miss
- 5:53Speaker 5: Wilford would like to talk to her? Sure, right away,
- 5:55Speaker 5: thank you.
- 5:56Speaker 6: How's she feeling any hysterics?
- 5:58Speaker 5: No, she's pretty quiet.
- 5:59Speaker 7: She went upstairs to rest a couple of housekeeping rooms
- 6:01Speaker 7: up there.
- 6:02Speaker 5: I guess that's where she and her husband live. What'll
- 6:04Speaker 5: tell her she doesn't feel too well? We could come
- 6:06Speaker 5: up there and talk to her.
- 6:07Speaker 6: Right, what do you think?
- 6:10Speaker 5: I don't know. We'll see what the crime lab can
- 6:12Speaker 5: come up with. We can start checking around the neighborhood
- 6:14Speaker 5: after we talk to the wife.
- 6:16Speaker 6: Take a look here.
- 6:20Speaker 5: What's that there?
- 6:21Speaker 6: It's funny. Not much place in a habitash raet for
- 6:24Speaker 6: things like this. Look a woman's nightgown, black lace packed
- 6:28Speaker 6: in a gift? Is that a card there?
- 6:31Speaker 5: Yeah? See if we can read it without touching? It
- 6:34Speaker 5: says to a beautiful girl, you've been away too long,
- 6:37Speaker 5: hoping we'll never be parted again, Signed Joseph Wilford.
- 6:41Speaker 6: Seems a little funny. Huh, maybe his wife's been on
- 6:44Speaker 6: a trip. He's going to give it to hers a bread.
- 6:46Speaker 9: When's the last time you gave your wife a black
- 6:48Speaker 9: lace nightgown?
- 6:54Speaker 5: Eleven o five pm. The two officers who'd answered the call,
- 6:58Speaker 5: Miles and Keever, brought the victims way. Missus Agnes Wilford downstairs,
- 7:02Speaker 5: and Ben and I questioned her. She was a small,
- 7:04Speaker 5: slight woman, dark haired, dark brown eyes, and sharp nose
- 7:07Speaker 5: and chin. She looked to be in her early fifties.
- 7:10Speaker 5: She said that both she and her husband had emigrated
- 7:12Speaker 5: to America from northern Germany twenty five years before. We
- 7:16Speaker 5: asked her how her married life with mister Wilfrid had been,
- 7:18Speaker 5: but you kept dodging the question. We asked her how
- 7:21Speaker 5: she happened to find the body.
- 7:23Speaker 6: The bodies just as you found it, Missus Wilford. You
- 7:25Speaker 6: didn't disturb anything.
- 7:27Speaker 5: No.
- 7:27Speaker 11: I just came back from her friends and looked, and
- 7:29Speaker 11: I saw him and he was dead.
- 7:31Speaker 10: Somebody killed Joseph.
- 7:32Speaker 5: And you're pretty sure that your husband wasn't having any
- 7:34Speaker 5: trouble with anybody.
- 7:35Speaker 10: No, m No, he didn't have any enemies. Not to
- 7:38Speaker 10: do this.
- 7:39Speaker 6: Here's Ma'amma. You lived upstairs in the back of the
- 7:41Speaker 6: store with mister Wilfrid, Is that rightman?
- 7:43Speaker 11: For a long time? Yes, we lived upstairs in the rooms.
- 7:46Speaker 11: It was nice, saved money for rend.
- 7:48Speaker 5: Well. Do you have any idea at all why her
- 7:50Speaker 5: husband's dead, Why somebody'd want to kill him?
- 7:52Speaker 11: There was money in the store they'd kill for there,
- 7:56Speaker 11: you policemen, people killed for money, you know that.
- 8:00Speaker 9: Do you know where mister Wilfrid kept his money, ma'am?
- 8:02Speaker 11: There was a wooden drawer on the table in the
- 8:04Speaker 11: back roomy would keep the money there. But I looked
- 8:08Speaker 11: when I came in first, it was empty.
- 8:10Speaker 5: Was there any money in that drawer tonight? You know that?
- 8:13Speaker 10: Oh?
- 8:13Speaker 11: Yes, three four hundred dollars? Anyway, Joseph always kept it
- 8:17Speaker 11: in there a terrible place up above the music all
- 8:21Speaker 11: the time, the noise.
- 8:22Speaker 10: You should make them be quiet. The dance halls have
- 8:26Speaker 10: been up there for a year tonight, anyway, this should
- 8:28Speaker 10: be quietes, ma'am.
- 8:30Speaker 6: About the money mister Wilfrid had in this.
- 8:32Speaker 11: Store, maybe one thousand dollars seven eight hundred, maybe that anyway.
- 8:37Speaker 10: And then his wristwatch he had on that's gone too.
- 8:39Speaker 6: Can you give us a description of the watch, Missus Wilford?
- 8:42Speaker 6: What make it was?
- 8:42Speaker 5: What look like?
- 8:43Speaker 10: Yes, I can give that to you.
- 8:45Speaker 11: It's white gold, expensive riding on the back, Agnes Joseph
- 8:52Speaker 11: one birthday I gave it to him.
- 8:55Speaker 5: Have you been away from your husband recently, ma'am? I
- 8:57Speaker 5: mean on a trip or anything like that.
- 8:59Speaker 10: No, I haven't been way.
- 9:00Speaker 5: Why well, we don't mean to upset you at a
- 9:03Speaker 5: time like this, but would you know if your husband
- 9:06Speaker 5: had any women friends? Ms?
- 9:09Speaker 10: Wolf, if you have a cigarette, I'd like one.
- 9:14Speaker 6: Oh yes, ma'am.
- 9:15Speaker 10: Here we are, thank you very much.
- 9:20Speaker 5: Thank you for your liking. Thank you.
- 9:29Speaker 10: Do we have to talk about it?
- 9:30Speaker 6: I'm afraid some man, most.
- 9:33Speaker 10: Of them, I know, for ten years it's been like this.
- 9:36Speaker 11: There were many of them, young women. Joseph didn't try
- 9:41Speaker 11: to hide it from me. I knew all about it.
- 9:43Speaker 5: And you continued to live with your husband all this time.
- 9:45Speaker 6: Man, I did.
- 9:47Speaker 10: He'd bring the girls to the shop here.
- 9:50Speaker 11: Sometimes when they'd come, I'd go away for a while.
- 9:55Speaker 11: After they were gone, I'd come back Joseph and I
- 9:57Speaker 11: would never talk about it.
- 9:59Speaker 9: You mean you never had any arguments with your husband
- 10:01Speaker 9: about the women.
- 10:03Speaker 11: No, he never lied to me about the girls he
- 10:06Speaker 11: had them, that's all. This was something he expected me
- 10:10Speaker 11: to understand.
- 10:11Speaker 6: I see you say you knew several of these women
- 10:13Speaker 6: your husband went out with. Could you give us their names?
- 10:15Speaker 5: Please?
- 10:16Speaker 11: Yes, there's an address book upstairs in Joseph's desk.
- 10:18Speaker 10: The names are in there.
- 10:19Speaker 5: I see.
- 10:20Speaker 9: Would you mind joining us that address book now?
- 10:22Speaker 5: Please?
- 10:22Speaker 10: Yes, we can go upstairs. I'll get it for you.
- 10:25Speaker 6: There's one question I'd like to ask you, Missus Wilfrid,
- 10:30Speaker 6: about your husband.
- 10:32Speaker 12: Ma'am.
- 10:33Speaker 11: I don't know, hurt very much at first, and then
- 10:39Speaker 11: by and by didn't hurt so much.
- 10:43Speaker 10: Time, I guess. Beg your pardon if you want.
- 10:49Speaker 11: To get used to anything, Yes, ma'am, even a man
- 10:53Speaker 11: who doesn't love you anymore.
- 11:01Speaker 5: We went upstairs to the housekeeping rooms, where Missus Wilfrid
- 11:04Speaker 5: gave us her husband's personal address book. She also gave
- 11:07Speaker 5: us a description of his wristwatch, which had been removed
- 11:09Speaker 5: from the body, along with the name of the jeweler
- 11:11Speaker 5: who'd sold her the watch. It was a Hamilton with
- 11:13Speaker 5: a diamond studded dial. The crime lab crew arrived downstairs
- 11:17Speaker 5: and began their routine investigation. We finished questioning the victim's wife,
- 11:21Speaker 5: and then we started checking the neighborhood. Only a few
- 11:23Speaker 5: of the stores in the area were still open. We
- 11:26Speaker 5: found only one possible witness, a newsboy who told us
- 11:29Speaker 5: that he'd seen an attractive, dark haired woman enter the
- 11:31Speaker 5: store earlier in the night, at about eight thirty p m.
- 11:34Speaker 5: His description of her was only sketchy. Another hour of
- 11:37Speaker 5: checking the neighborhood and we went back to the store.
- 11:40Speaker 5: Lieutenant Lee Jones and the crime lab crew finished checking
- 11:43Speaker 5: over the entire layout. They went back downtown to give
- 11:45Speaker 5: a thorough examination to what physical evidence that they'd found.
- 11:48Speaker 5: The deputy coroner arrived and removed the body. Together with
- 11:51Speaker 5: hubcun Forbes from Homicide, Ben and I spent most of
- 11:54Speaker 5: the next day checking with store owners in the immediate
- 11:56Speaker 5: neighborhood of Wilfrid's Haberdashery. They could tell us nothing we
- 11:59Speaker 5: had already found out. We got the description and serial
- 12:02Speaker 5: numbers of the victim's missing wristwatch, notified the pawn shop detail,
- 12:05Speaker 5: and got out a broadcast on it. Three forty five pm.
- 12:09Speaker 5: We checked with the office.
- 12:12Speaker 6: We've got a slow enough start on this thing. Huh.
- 12:14Speaker 6: Everybody tells it's the same story.
- 12:16Speaker 5: Yeah, seems to be pretty common know age. He had
- 12:18Speaker 5: a lot of girlfriends. I guess we better start checking
- 12:20Speaker 5: out the names of that address book. Huh.
- 12:22Speaker 6: Yeah, her beats all doesn't in jail?
- 12:26Speaker 5: What's that?
- 12:27Speaker 6: Missus will for ten years? Her husband's dating other women
- 12:29Speaker 6: right in front of her isn't normal? And see why
- 12:32Speaker 6: she didn't just pack up and leave.
- 12:34Speaker 5: It's kind of hard to figure that maybe she was
- 12:36Speaker 5: still in love with him. Wonder how Forbes and Hubco
- 12:38Speaker 5: made out.
- 12:38Speaker 6: I checked the books. If we got a call?
- 12:40Speaker 9: Yeah, see, no, no word from her?
- 12:45Speaker 6: No? Lee Jones called from the crime lab wants us
- 12:47Speaker 6: to check with him. I call him two six six
- 12:53Speaker 6: seventh please, that's right.
- 12:54Speaker 5: I guess we better check with the morgue too. Huh.
- 12:56Speaker 5: See if they got the body posted yet?
- 12:58Speaker 6: Yeah? I leave from maryl Oh, what was did you
- 13:03Speaker 6: get the name? I see? All right, I'm buy what
- 13:08Speaker 6: do you have? Lee talked to the corner already. Wilfred
- 13:10Speaker 6: died about nine o'clock because of death with strangulation.
- 13:13Speaker 9: How about those wounds in the head and on the neck.
- 13:15Speaker 6: That didn't do it. The cloth died around his neck
- 13:18Speaker 6: was a woman's slip for her?
- 13:19Speaker 9: Or did you pick up anything off at any laundry marks?
- 13:21Speaker 6: And he did better than that. Yeah, we got the
- 13:23Speaker 6: name of the laundry.
- 13:25Speaker 5: After checking for all stains and markings on the woman's slip,
- 13:28Speaker 5: which had been found knotted around the murder victim's neck,
- 13:31Speaker 5: Lee Jones had examined it under a special fluorescent light.
- 13:34Speaker 5: He found a type of marking used by only one
- 13:36Speaker 5: large laundry service in the city. We checked with the
- 13:38Speaker 5: managers of the laundry company and found that the slip
- 13:41Speaker 5: had been cleaned by them for a miss Elised Dressler.
- 13:44Speaker 5: She had a North Hudson Street address. We started checking
- 13:46Speaker 5: on her. The first lead came from the dead man's
- 13:49Speaker 5: personal address book. We found the name of Elisee Dressler
- 13:52Speaker 5: listed along with her address and telephone number. There was
- 13:55Speaker 5: a single word scribbled beside her name and enclosed with parentheses.
- 13:59Speaker 5: It said Max. That was all five forty two pm.
- 14:03Speaker 5: We drove out to the address, a Spanish style apartment
- 14:05Speaker 5: house on North Hudson. We rang but there was no answer.
- 14:08Speaker 5: The apartment manager told us Miss Dresler worked as a
- 14:11Speaker 5: dancer at the nightclub on West Seventh Street. Ben and
- 14:13Speaker 5: I drove to the club, a high price theater restaurant,
- 14:16Speaker 5: which was newly opened. We were told the least dressler
- 14:18Speaker 5: wasn't due there until nine pm. We had a couple
- 14:21Speaker 5: of ham and cheese sandwhich isn't some coffee at a
- 14:23Speaker 5: lunch cotter, and we checked back at the club a
- 14:24Speaker 5: few minutes past nine. The show was already started. We
- 14:28Speaker 5: located the dressler girl in her room backstage. She was
- 14:31Speaker 5: a tall, fairly attractive blonde. We started questioning.
- 14:34Speaker 6: Her, Can you tell us where you were last night? Miss?
- 14:36Speaker 12: Yeah?
- 14:37Speaker 13: All right here I work every night at Monday.
- 14:38Speaker 5: We closed in What time did you get here last night?
- 14:41Speaker 13: Just about eight o'clock. I had something to eat and
- 14:43Speaker 13: a change in my costume, went to work.
- 14:44Speaker 6: Do you know if mister and Wilfrid had any enemies? No,
- 14:47Speaker 6: maybe somebody was having trouble with No.
- 14:49Speaker 13: Oh, maybe that wife of his. Is none of my business.
- 14:51Speaker 13: I wouldn't know.
- 14:52Speaker 5: You can't think of anybody at all or might want
- 14:54Speaker 5: him out of the way.
- 14:55Speaker 14: No, I don't think so. He and Max Hollins had
- 14:57Speaker 14: some arguments. But that's only time I saw Joe mad
- 14:59Speaker 14: at anybody. This Max Hollins, he's the man who arranged
- 15:01Speaker 14: for me to come out from New York.
- 15:03Speaker 13: Joe Max been friends for a long time.
- 15:04Speaker 6: What were the arguments about Miss Tresler? Do you remember?
- 15:07Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 15:07Speaker 13: About me?
- 15:08Speaker 14: You see, Max brought me out here, and I suppose
- 15:09Speaker 14: at first he thought he owned me. He think I
- 15:11Speaker 14: should go out with any other men but him.
- 15:13Speaker 13: Max's Steven sometimes was so my I like Wilford, so
- 15:16Speaker 13: I went out with him. I went out with Max too.
- 15:18Speaker 5: Well, these arguments they had about you, would you say
- 15:20Speaker 5: that they were pretty mad at each other? Max and
- 15:22Speaker 5: this mister Wilfrid.
- 15:23Speaker 14: Well, last week Max was very angry with Joe, but
- 15:26Speaker 14: I think he got over it.
- 15:27Speaker 13: Could we talk together later. It's almost time for me
- 15:29Speaker 13: to go on.
- 15:29Speaker 10: I'm been to get outside.
- 15:30Speaker 5: Oh sure, excuse me, I'll get it. We'll wait backstage
- 15:34Speaker 5: here for you, Miss Tresler. Is that all right?
- 15:36Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 15:37Speaker 13: Fine? Oh that's all right. I still have a few minutes.
- 15:40Speaker 5: Well, how about the last time you were in Wilfrid's store,
- 15:42Speaker 5: Miss Tresler? Can you remember that?
- 15:44Speaker 14: Not exactly at least six months ago? I hardly ever
- 15:47Speaker 14: went to see Joe there.
- 15:47Speaker 6: Did you ever have any occasion to leave any clothing
- 15:50Speaker 6: with Wilfrid and his store? Maybe for cleaning alteration?
- 15:53Speaker 13: No, I never left him. Maybe it's possible they could
- 15:55Speaker 13: be there.
- 15:56Speaker 5: What do you mean?
- 15:57Speaker 13: I have some nice slips?
- 15:58Speaker 10: You know?
- 15:58Speaker 14: First I sent him out, but Joe saying you're a
- 16:00Speaker 14: very nice French laundry to do him? He come to
- 16:02Speaker 14: my place to pick him up and then take him
- 16:03Speaker 14: to the laundry. Maybe he could have left him in
- 16:05Speaker 14: his shop one day.
- 16:06Speaker 5: Well, would anybody besides yourself have access to the clothes
- 16:09Speaker 5: in your apartment? Maybe a roommate?
- 16:10Speaker 13: No, I live by myself.
- 16:12Speaker 14: I have the only key to the door except Max Hollands,
- 16:14Speaker 14: he's got one.
- 16:15Speaker 13: It is my apartment house see upstairs floor. Nobody else
- 16:18Speaker 13: had the key.
- 16:18Speaker 6: Could you send any clothing to the French laundry with
- 16:20Speaker 6: mister Wilfrid recently?
- 16:22Speaker 14: Yesterday I did two nice slips of mine. But Joe
- 16:24Speaker 14: Wilford didn't call him. I send him over with Max.
- 16:26Speaker 5: How'd that happen?
- 16:27Speaker 14: Max said he might as well take him. He was
- 16:29Speaker 14: going down that neighborhood by the habitash room and I
- 16:31Speaker 14: want to see Wilford anyway, Max that he wanted to
- 16:33Speaker 14: fix up their argument.
- 16:39Speaker 5: We continued questioning the Dressler girl after she finished her
- 16:42Speaker 5: first act at the theater restaurant. She told us that
- 16:44Speaker 5: she hadn't seen Max Hollands since early the day before.
- 16:47Speaker 5: She was taken downtown, where she gave us a full statement.
- 16:50Speaker 5: Further questioning got us the information that the argument between
- 16:52Speaker 5: the two men, Joseph Wilfrid and Max Hollins over the
- 16:55Speaker 5: affections of Elice Dressler, was far from settled. At their
- 16:58Speaker 5: last meeting. The girl admitted that it was a serious
- 17:01Speaker 5: argument and that it ended up in a fistfight between
- 17:03Speaker 5: the two men. She said Max Hollins was out of
- 17:05Speaker 5: town for the night, but that he'd return early the
- 17:07Speaker 5: next evening for work. He was employed as manager of
- 17:10Speaker 5: a room service department at a large downtown hotel. Eleven
- 17:14Speaker 5: thirty pm, Ben and I drove back to the apartment
- 17:17Speaker 5: house on North Hudson, and together with a building manager,
- 17:19Speaker 5: we checked Max Holland's apartment. We found nothing. The manager
- 17:22Speaker 5: told us Holland's car was parked in the apartment garage,
- 17:25Speaker 5: so we went down and gave it a routine check
- 17:27Speaker 5: under the front seat, we found a paper bag with
- 17:29Speaker 5: a pair of gloves in it. There were bloodstains on
- 17:31Speaker 5: both gloves. We dropped him off at the crime lab
- 17:34Speaker 5: for examination. At six o'clock the following night, Ben and
- 17:37Speaker 5: I went to the room service department of the Downtown
- 17:39Speaker 5: hotel where Hollins was employed.
- 17:42Speaker 15: Sorry, said mister Hollins is late, this seitting. It should
- 17:44Speaker 15: be here pretty soon.
- 17:45Speaker 6: You notify you had been late.
- 17:46Speaker 15: Well, he caught. Yes, probably be here in ten to
- 17:48Speaker 15: fifteen minutes. I'm his assistant, can help it.
- 17:50Speaker 5: No, it's all right, we'll wait, all right, pardon me,
- 17:53Speaker 5: I wonder if we could look at your wristwatch.
- 17:54Speaker 15: Please, surely it's just a few minutes past it.
- 17:56Speaker 5: We just wanted to look at the watch if we
- 17:58Speaker 5: call sure here, could you take it off, like, look
- 18:01Speaker 5: at the back of it if it's all right?
- 18:02Speaker 15: Sure, that's all right, Yeah, that's looking at it.
- 18:06Speaker 6: Just got it yesterday, that's all same. Engraving agonist to Joseph.
- 18:11Speaker 5: Where'd you get this watch? Sir? All right? What's the matter?
- 18:13Speaker 5: Where'd you get it?
- 18:14Speaker 15: Max Hollins? He sold it.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Tommy, You are listening to Dragnet. Actual stories from official
- 18:30Speaker 4: police files.
- 18:39Speaker 5: February twenty first, Friday, six thirty pm, we called the
- 18:43Speaker 5: office and notified them that we'd located the wristwatch taken
- 18:45Speaker 5: from the body of the murder victim, Joseph Wilfrid. A
- 18:48Speaker 5: stakeout was placed on the North Hudson Street department house.
- 18:51Speaker 5: Ben and I stayed on at the hotel waiting the
- 18:53Speaker 5: return of the murder suspect, Max Hollands. We talked to
- 18:56Speaker 5: his assistant and found out that Hollins had a room
- 18:58Speaker 5: in the hotel where he could sleep whenever he was
- 19:00Speaker 5: called on to work. Late at night, six fifty five pm,
- 19:04Speaker 5: we called the office back and asked for a couple
- 19:06Speaker 5: of men to be sent over to check the suspects room.
- 19:08Speaker 5: A few minutes later, Hollins himself showed up for work.
- 19:11Speaker 5: Apparently he'd been doing some drinking. Ben and I questioned
- 19:14Speaker 5: him at his desk to stall for time until him
- 19:16Speaker 5: in from the office could get to the hotel and
- 19:17Speaker 5: make a thorough check of the suspects room. Hollins was
- 19:20Speaker 5: kept busy on the phone taking room service orders from
- 19:23Speaker 5: the hotel guests. In between calls we talked to him.
- 19:28Speaker 8: I left a lease in the apartment, and then I
- 19:29Speaker 8: took a few pieces of laundery. She hadn't dropped them
- 19:31Speaker 8: off at Wilfrid's store. It was about six o'clock Wednesday night.
- 19:34Speaker 6: You mentioned the address a girl you wanted to see
- 19:36Speaker 6: mister Wilford. You wanted to patch up an argument you'd
- 19:38Speaker 6: had with him.
- 19:39Speaker 8: Yes, I just wanted to make sure he didn't have
- 19:40Speaker 8: any bad feelings about it. Really wasn't much of an argument.
- 19:43Speaker 5: How long did you stay at Wilfrid's store, mister Hollins,
- 19:45Speaker 5: Do you remember then?
- 19:46Speaker 8: Twenty minutes, maybe a half hour. We talked and we
- 19:48Speaker 8: had a glass of wine in the back room. No,
- 19:51Speaker 8: it was upstairs. We drank the wine and everything was
- 19:54Speaker 8: all right. I guess it was about half past six
- 19:56Speaker 8: when I left the store. It was all right then.
- 19:58Speaker 5: Well, did anybody come in the store when you were there?
- 20:00Speaker 8: No, there's nobody.
- 20:01Speaker 6: How about missus Wilford. Was he in the store at
- 20:03Speaker 6: all during the time you were there on Wednesday?
- 20:05Speaker 8: No? He said she was gone for the day, she'd
- 20:07Speaker 8: be back later on. We finished our talk and I left.
- 20:10Speaker 8: The last time I saw Joseph, it was a terrible
- 20:13Speaker 8: thing for somebody to kill him excuse me again, please,
- 20:19Speaker 8: room service. May I help you? Please? Yes, sir, Yes, sir, Well,
- 20:22Speaker 8: could I suggest the palace cock solid, very nice. Yeah,
- 20:26Speaker 8: half of other chucks filled with flesh, crab meat one
- 20:29Speaker 8: thousand dollars, dressing, garnish with slices of avocado.
- 20:32Speaker 6: All right.
- 20:34Speaker 8: Two orders some consummat all right, wrench rose, coffee and brandy.
- 20:40Speaker 8: Eight thirteen, Yes, sir, right away, Fred, this order for
- 20:44Speaker 8: eight thirteen. That's mister and missus Morrow eight thirteen. Make
- 20:48Speaker 8: it quickly, please, Yes, one of the best men I have, Fred.
- 20:52Speaker 8: We keep a very high standard in our room service,
- 20:54Speaker 8: only the very best. They're all Geneva man.
- 20:56Speaker 6: Yes, sir. Something else we'd like to find out.
- 20:58Speaker 8: Only one years ago I came here to the hotel.
- 21:01Speaker 8: It was nothing that was serving garbage, bad service, very bad.
- 21:04Speaker 8: I built our staff one by one.
- 21:06Speaker 5: I did it.
- 21:08Speaker 8: There's our staff list. There find us waiters in the country.
- 21:11Speaker 8: Henry Sanchez, Fred LaSalle, Conrad Lutz, jos Wick, Yes, and
- 21:15Speaker 8: Elma Creighton. He waited on the President when he came
- 21:18Speaker 8: to visit here from Washington. The President thought so much
- 21:21Speaker 8: of our service he wrote a letter to elim later
- 21:23Speaker 8: on no argument at all. I have the best spend
- 21:26Speaker 8: in the country, the best food. Twenty one years to
- 21:28Speaker 8: make it like it is, I did it all myself.
- 21:31Speaker 5: I understand you and Wilfrid were old friends, mister Hollins.
- 21:33Speaker 5: He knew him quite a number of years, all right.
- 21:35Speaker 8: Most of his life. Yes, I knew Joseph in the
- 21:37Speaker 8: Old Country. We came from the same town. Terrible thing
- 21:41Speaker 8: that's happened. I always liked Joseph a good friend.
- 21:45Speaker 6: What about these arguments you had with him lately about
- 21:47Speaker 6: the girl at least dressler amount anything.
- 21:49Speaker 8: No, but it showed something typical of Joseph. Maybe it
- 21:53Speaker 8: was the business he was in dollars, it's all he
- 21:55Speaker 8: thought about the big dollar. He knew he had more
- 21:58Speaker 8: money than I did. He thought he could do anything
- 22:00Speaker 8: with it. About the girl, Elise I took a visit
- 22:04Speaker 8: to the Old Country three years ago, Spausbourg.
- 22:07Speaker 6: That's where I.
- 22:07Speaker 8: Learned my trade from the best matrids in Europe. I
- 22:11Speaker 8: met Elisea on my way back in New York. You
- 22:14Speaker 8: can check up and all my background. I worked at
- 22:17Speaker 8: the Grand Hotel in Bustles, that's when it was the best.
- 22:21Speaker 8: I was at the Carlton in London, and I went
- 22:24Speaker 8: to Venice the Hotel Danieli, after I went to the
- 22:27Speaker 8: Hotel Majestic in.
- 22:29Speaker 6: Con Yes, sir, what would that have to do with
- 22:31Speaker 6: miss Presner?
- 22:31Speaker 8: Very nice girl.
- 22:32Speaker 5: We liked each other.
- 22:34Speaker 8: When I came back here, I arranged for her to
- 22:35Speaker 8: come out from New York. Took care of everything. I
- 22:38Speaker 8: thought I'd like to marry her when she came here.
- 22:41Speaker 5: How about it, Hollins, You want to tell us.
- 22:43Speaker 6: Now, sir?
- 22:45Speaker 5: Did you kill Wilford?
- 22:47Speaker 8: Excuse me? Please, room service? May I help you?
- 22:51Speaker 6: Please?
- 22:52Speaker 8: Yes, mister Sutter, Dinner for twelve tomorrow night in your
- 22:55Speaker 8: sweet your wife and I made up the menu, certainly,
- 22:59Speaker 8: mister Sutter. I'll check it over for you. Let's see.
- 23:02Speaker 8: We serve caviat with plini to start with, and the
- 23:06Speaker 8: soup conserme magdaline, and with the soup a mantiatto. Yes,
- 23:12Speaker 8: so that's Spanish. Then crab legs sunday Na, sir, sunday Nea.
- 23:17Speaker 8: That's crab legs rolled in breadcrumbs, fried and butter, served
- 23:21Speaker 8: in a terrap and dish with besher meal sauce. After
- 23:24Speaker 8: that the chateaubriand with truffle sauce. Soup la potatoes, small
- 23:28Speaker 8: green Pieace francille, and with that we serve Ponte twenty seven. Dessert.
- 23:34Speaker 8: We shall have peach Blombay coffee and liqueurze afterward. Yes,
- 23:39Speaker 8: Sir Henry Sanchez and Condreed Loots, they will serve you.
- 23:44Speaker 8: Thank you, Thank you, mister Saturn. Good night, real gentleman.
- 23:50Speaker 8: Mister Sadah, he knows how to give it in a party.
- 23:53Speaker 8: Your school. Not so many of them left now. It's
- 23:57Speaker 8: not like it used to be. People aren't the same anymore. Oh, yes, Fred,
- 24:03Speaker 8: what is it?
- 24:03Speaker 15: A message for the offices here, sergeant?
- 24:05Speaker 5: Oh, thank you, excuse this minute, of course. What is it?
- 24:11Speaker 5: It's from Forbes. I checked his room in the hotel.
- 24:14Speaker 5: I didn't find anything better.
- 24:15Speaker 6: Get him downtown, yeah, Hollins will have to ask you.
- 24:19Speaker 5: To come downtown.
- 24:20Speaker 8: Oh yes, get my top coat on here there this way, sergeant.
- 24:28Speaker 8: Huh you park your car in the hotel garage?
- 24:33Speaker 6: No, sirrps right ontowenth street, you go out the.
- 24:35Speaker 8: Side, go then this way, just starting the rain. Do
- 24:44Speaker 8: you both have your top quote?
- 24:46Speaker 5: Yeah, well let's go. We're parked right down this way.
- 24:52Speaker 8: What did the least say? The least best?
- 24:55Speaker 5: She said, you had a fight with Wilfrid. You went
- 24:58Speaker 5: to see him the same day was murdered.
- 25:00Speaker 8: Yes, it's terrible. It's too bad.
- 25:03Speaker 6: I might as well tell you, sir. We've got the evidence.
- 25:06Speaker 6: Quite a bit of it all points to you.
- 25:08Speaker 8: Oh how is that.
- 25:10Speaker 5: All a pair of gloves you were wearing. We found
- 25:12Speaker 5: him the risk watch he took off the body. We
- 25:13Speaker 5: found that too. Yeah, you want to tell us about it.
- 25:19Speaker 8: I didn't use good sense. I didn't know what to
- 25:22Speaker 8: do when I went to see him, but I didn't
- 25:26Speaker 8: have it in my mind to kill him. God knows.
- 25:29Speaker 8: I tried to talk to him. I asked him please
- 25:32Speaker 8: to stay away from the least. I asked him as
- 25:35Speaker 8: a friend. All he said to me was Max, I
- 25:39Speaker 8: give her presents and she likes me. I have the
- 25:41Speaker 8: money to give her what she wants me. You haven't
- 25:43Speaker 8: got the money. That's what he said to me. He
- 25:46Speaker 8: had a fight with him, then, No, there wasn't any fight.
- 25:50Speaker 8: I'm not sorry I killed him, but I'm not sorry.
- 25:54Speaker 5: You want to give us a statement about it downtown.
- 25:56Speaker 8: I suppose I'm not ashamed of it.
- 25:58Speaker 9: All right, let's go down this way.
- 26:02Speaker 8: Any man would have done the same How could you
- 26:05Speaker 8: hear such talk and not kill him?
- 26:07Speaker 6: How about the rest watch she took off of him,
- 26:09Speaker 6: the money from the drawer.
- 26:10Speaker 8: I wanted to hurt him more, even after he was dead.
- 26:13Speaker 8: After I beat him and beat him, I knew it
- 26:16Speaker 8: would be the worst way to hurt Joseph to take
- 26:18Speaker 8: his money.
- 26:19Speaker 6: Here we are and then back out.
- 26:22Speaker 8: Yeah, sergeant, Yeah, I've told you now.
- 26:32Speaker 6: I killed him.
- 26:34Speaker 8: Don't you think I had a right to kill him.
- 26:36Speaker 5: I wouldn't know, but he was like that.
- 26:39Speaker 8: The first time you met Joseph, you would know he
- 26:41Speaker 8: was bad. It was better for everybody for him to die.
- 26:46Speaker 8: First time you met him, you would know that.
- 26:48Speaker 5: I'm sorry, I wouldn't know, mister Wow. The only time
- 26:51Speaker 5: I met him, he was dead.
- 27:00Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 27:04Speaker 2: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 27:06Speaker 4: On June fourth, trial was held in Superior Court, Department
- 27:08Speaker 4: eighty nine, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 27:12Speaker 4: In a moment the results of that trial, Max Hollins
- 27:24Speaker 4: was tried and convicted of murder in the first degree.
- 27:26Speaker 4: He was executed in the lethal gas chamber of the
- 27:28Speaker 4: State Penitentiary San Quentin, California. You have just heard Dragnet,
- 27:42Speaker 4: a series of authentic cases from official files. Technical advice
- 27:45Speaker 4: comes from the Office of Chief of Police W. H. Parker,
- 27:48Speaker 4: Los Angeles Police Department.
- 27:59Speaker 15: Statue for Counterspy next on NBC.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Welcome Back. I would feel a bit more sorry for
- 28:13Speaker 1: the assistant getting taken for that stolen watch. But it
- 28:18Speaker 1: did have that engraving which should have been a clue.
- 28:23Speaker 1: But that he wouldn't even think to Jack perhaps speaks
- 28:26Speaker 1: to the amount of respect that the killer had within
- 28:31Speaker 1: his industry, and sadly forthited. I have no doubt about
- 28:37Speaker 1: the victim being a bad person independent of him and
- 28:43Speaker 1: whether you could tell it or not. If you really
- 28:46Speaker 1: could tell it first time you talked to him, then
- 28:49Speaker 1: the question is what were you doing being his friend
- 28:53Speaker 1: for so many years. I have noticed that the way
- 28:56Speaker 1: the episodes tend to work, if Herfield plays a character
- 29:03Speaker 1: than Lee Jones will not end up appearing in the episode,
- 29:08Speaker 1: even if he is providing key information. It will all
- 29:11Speaker 1: just be carried forward by exposition, listener comments and feedback.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Now and we have an email here from David and
- 29:22Speaker 1: he's emailing regarding the episode The Big Crazy. Hi, Adam,
- 29:27Speaker 1: I've heard this episode before, but it didn't hit me
- 29:30Speaker 1: until this time that it's basically a Dragnet Halloween episode,
- 29:35Speaker 1: although it was broadcast in August. Besides the reference to
- 29:39Speaker 1: Markim that you noted, there are a lot of Edgar
- 29:43Speaker 1: Allan Poe references. The name of the murdered woman is Bernice,
- 29:47Speaker 1: which is similar to the titular character in Poe's story Bernice,
- 29:53Speaker 1: which is about a mentally disturbed man whose fiance is
- 29:56Speaker 1: thought to be dead but who actually isn't. The when
- 30:00Speaker 1: sisters are reminiscent of post story William Wilson, which is
- 30:05Speaker 1: about doppel gangers and death, although a very different way
- 30:10Speaker 1: from this episode imposed story The Black Cat, the main
- 30:15Speaker 1: character and his wife have a cat that the main
- 30:18Speaker 1: character murders. He then murders his wife and her body
- 30:21Speaker 1: is discovered because of the meowing of a supernatural cat.
- 30:25Speaker 1: The scene where the mentally disturbed husband, which is with
- 30:30Speaker 1: the two policemen and gradually acts more and more erratic
- 30:33Speaker 1: until he confesses to a murder, is straight out of
- 30:37Speaker 1: the Telltale Heart. Since this is Dragnet, this case must
- 30:41Speaker 1: have been based on a real life event, but I
- 30:44Speaker 1: would really love to know how close it was to
- 30:48Speaker 1: the true story and how many references to Paul were
- 30:51Speaker 1: worked into the story, or if I'm just seeing patterns
- 30:55Speaker 1: where none exists. As always, thanks for your podcast and
- 30:59Speaker 1: the undless hours of entertainment you bring us. Well, that
- 31:03Speaker 1: is a really insightful email, David, and not something I'd
- 31:06Speaker 1: picked up on because it was Dragnet. But I can
- 31:09Speaker 1: see where you're coming from, and it makes sense to
- 31:12Speaker 1: notice that, you know, as it was released this year
- 31:17Speaker 1: or right around Halloween time. As with most Dragnet cases,
- 31:21Speaker 1: it's particularly rare for us to have a firm knowledge of, Oh, yeah,
- 31:27Speaker 1: this is the case they were talking about. We don't know.
- 31:31Speaker 1: If I were to speculate, I'd imagine that there were
- 31:35Speaker 1: portions of the story that were very reminiscent. I mean,
- 31:39Speaker 1: even if you get to the ending where the man
- 31:45Speaker 1: breaks down, confesses and kills himself because of someone pretending
- 31:52Speaker 1: to be his dead wife and him being a somewhat
- 31:56Speaker 1: disturbed mystery fan, it really would suggest that type of treatment.
- 32:01Speaker 1: But it would be interesting to know, like where is
- 32:06Speaker 1: the fiction and where is the reality. If I were
- 32:09Speaker 1: to bet, I would think that the cat was something
- 32:13Speaker 1: the writer's created based on what was there, But who knows.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Thanks so much for the question. And then we also
- 32:20Speaker 1: have a comment regarding our best of the twenty twenty
- 32:26Speaker 1: four to twenty five season of this coming from Spotify.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Doctor who Done It wrote the Mister and Missus North
- 32:34Speaker 1: episode was like the Twilight Zone for some reason. The
- 32:38Speaker 1: addition of jazz music made it extra creepy. It's an
- 32:44Speaker 1: interesting choice when it comes to creepy or scary music.
- 32:51Speaker 1: There are a lot of choices out there. Classic there
- 32:55Speaker 1: are certain pieces of classical music or other type of
- 33:00Speaker 1: organ or orchestral music that can create this sort of
- 33:04Speaker 1: moody atmosphere. But where jazz I think can really work
- 33:09Speaker 1: in that context is it works in another way just
- 33:13Speaker 1: kind of to create that sort of feeling of alarm
- 33:18Speaker 1: and panic, you know, when it comes at you with
- 33:21Speaker 1: that really fast pace, much more like a frantic build.
- 33:25Speaker 1: But I definitely agree the music was a big part
- 33:29Speaker 1: of what made that episode work. All right, Well, now
- 33:32Speaker 1: it's time to thank our Patreon supporter of the day,
- 33:34Speaker 1: and I want to go ahead and thank Kevin, Patreon
- 33:36Speaker 1: supporter since July currently supporting the podcast at the Detective
- 33:40Speaker 1: Sergeant level of seven dollars and fourteen cents or more
