Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone Craig
- 0:02Speaker 1: Way alongside the producer Cameron Parker. Coming up in a
- 0:04Speaker 1: few minutes, we'll visit with Greg Tepper, managing Canser Der
- 0:07Speaker 1: Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine to talk about college and
- 0:10Speaker 1: high school football in the state of Texas.
- 0:13Speaker 2: We'll do that.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I'll ask him about the Cowboys too, because I think
- 0:17Speaker 1: he's a Cowboys fan, frustrated Cowboys fan as well. On
- 0:21Speaker 1: the first hour of the program, we heard from Jerry Jones,
- 0:22Speaker 1: and we will hear some war from Jerry and also
- 0:25Speaker 1: from Dabosweeny, the head coach of the Clemson Tigers.
- 0:29Speaker 2: So we will will do that.
- 0:35Speaker 1: You know, I understand the frustration, but believe me as
- 0:40Speaker 1: a guy who was a fan of the Rams, who's
- 0:43Speaker 1: won fewer Super Bowls than the Cowboys, but obviously the
- 0:47Speaker 1: two they have one have come much more recently than
- 0:53Speaker 1: the Cowboys last Super Bowl. So but I still understand
- 0:56Speaker 1: the freshtrasure the frustration that you feel as a Cowboy fan.
- 0:59Speaker 1: And like I said, I know people who said that's
- 1:02Speaker 1: a step away from Ruth root for him anymore. My
- 1:06Speaker 1: wife was a Cowboys fan. She grew up in Dallas
- 1:08Speaker 1: for a while, but she's just kind of gotten dumb
- 1:11Speaker 1: to them.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:13Speaker 1: She's happy for you when I get excited with the
- 1:16Speaker 1: Rams win the game, so she's kind of become a little.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Bit of a fan of them. But good win.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Last weekend it was beating the Buffalo bill and they
- 1:23Speaker 1: got a big game Thursday night against forty nine Ers
- 1:25Speaker 1: because if they win, they're still in the thick of
- 1:27Speaker 1: the fight in the NFC West, and I think that
- 1:30Speaker 1: would put the forty nine ers on the shelf. The
- 1:32Speaker 1: Niners are two games back of Sea Out, so at
- 1:35Speaker 1: this late stage, win over San Francisco would pretty much
- 1:40Speaker 1: put them away. And that's almost as satisfying as the
- 1:43Speaker 1: Rams being cond That's that kind of almost falls in
- 1:46Speaker 1: that category of what Sark said about Arkansas fans, you know,
- 1:52Speaker 1: hating Texas more than they like themselves.
- 1:55Speaker 2: It's almost like that with the Rams and the forty
- 1:57Speaker 2: nine ers.
- 1:57Speaker 1: You know, if the forty nine ers are slipping up,
- 1:59Speaker 1: them Ram fans happy, perhaps more happy than they should be,
- 2:02Speaker 1: as opposed to rooting for their own team to have success.
- 2:07Speaker 1: But you take what you can get, and for the
- 2:10Speaker 1: Cowboys right now, it's just difficult very very difficult. Cowboy
- 2:13Speaker 1: fans are a n usual study right now because it
- 2:18Speaker 1: really does seem to be divided into three groups. There's
- 2:23Speaker 1: the one group that's with them no matter what. Those
- 2:28Speaker 1: were the fans who were there last night. Those are
- 2:30Speaker 1: the fans who will be the next home game. Those
- 2:32Speaker 1: are the fans who buy those whatever thirty dollars party
- 2:34Speaker 1: passes where you can only stand down one end to
- 2:37Speaker 1: the field or pay four hundred dollars for a decent ticket. There,
- 2:43Speaker 1: that's that group. You don't belong in that group, pray,
- 2:46Speaker 1: I don't think so. Yeah, okay, then belong in that group,
- 2:50Speaker 1: all right. Then there's another group that's on the opposite them,
- 2:54Speaker 1: that's thoroughly disgusted with them, had enough, has proclaimed that
- 3:01Speaker 1: they're done with them. They're switching out teams, going to
- 3:04Speaker 1: find a new favorite team or adopt a different team.
- 3:07Speaker 1: They're never rooting for the Cowboys. Again, I don't think
- 3:10Speaker 1: you fall into that group either unless you know Mike
- 3:13Speaker 1: McCarthy gets a lifetime contract, okay, and we know that's.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Not going to happen.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Then there's the third group, and this is where Cameron is.
- 3:23Speaker 1: This is you know he's not a giver. He's not
- 3:27Speaker 1: a taker. He's kind of a squeezer, you know. He's
- 3:30Speaker 1: just kind of a wheezer, you know, just kind of
- 3:32Speaker 1: kind of stuck in.
- 3:34Speaker 2: The middle there.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Wanting, wanting to root for his favorite team as he
- 3:42Speaker 1: did through so many successful seasons.
- 3:45Speaker 2: But just it.
- 3:48Speaker 1: It's completely insulting to you, as a knowledgeable pro football follower,
- 3:54Speaker 1: to root for the team that continues to collect blow
- 4:00Speaker 1: off one toe with a time with a handgun and said.
- 4:04Speaker 2: That, I think frustrates you as much as anything.
- 4:07Speaker 1: The fact that you're, like, I root for this team
- 4:09Speaker 1: and this team just continues to let me down, and
- 4:13Speaker 1: yet you can't quit him.
- 4:16Speaker 2: You don't give up on them. Oh, I've given up
- 4:18Speaker 2: on them this season.
- 4:19Speaker 1: This season, but not in terms of your total identity
- 4:23Speaker 1: as a fan.
- 4:23Speaker 2: You are still a Cowboys fan right loosely, I guess.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I mean, would you call me a fan?
- 4:31Speaker 1: I would only in that you haven't renounced your loyalty
- 4:36Speaker 1: to them. That keeps you tethered to them. That's why.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Because you haven't renounced your loyalty, you haven't said I'm
- 4:44Speaker 1: done with you, I'm never rooting for you again. I'm
- 4:46Speaker 1: gonna go find another team. So, you know, maybe it's
- 4:52Speaker 1: easier for my oldest son because when he's a kid,
- 4:54Speaker 1: he liked the Jaguars and then when they were bad.
- 4:56Speaker 2: He switched to the Cowboys. He said, it's logical. They're
- 4:58Speaker 2: in my home state. On it.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Now, he's completely disgusted with him, and he's he's jettis
- 5:03Speaker 1: in them, and he said he and his girlfriend are
- 5:06Speaker 1: going to find a team to root for. A team. Well,
- 5:10Speaker 1: they just proclaimed this a little over a week ago.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Chief sends. He didn't say that.
- 5:16Speaker 1: He said it had to be a team that none
- 5:21Speaker 1: of his family was connected to.
- 5:24Speaker 2: So it can be a Rams fan or a Packers
- 5:25Speaker 2: fan or whatever.
- 5:28Speaker 1: But the Chiefs might be a decent thing because he's
- 5:30Speaker 1: a Royals fan because he used to work for the
- 5:32Speaker 1: Royals when he's a minor league video coordinator and so
- 5:37Speaker 1: now maybe, but his favorite baseball team as a kid
- 5:42Speaker 1: was a Tiger, So maybe the Lions factor in there.
- 5:44Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I wish anyone luck that wants to root for a
- 5:48Speaker 1: team quarterback by Jared Godd But that's okay, that's your deal,
- 5:51Speaker 1: you know, And he's having a good year. It's just
- 5:54Speaker 1: he wasn't that kind of quarterback when he was with
- 5:55Speaker 1: the Rams, and that's why they went. They had and
- 5:57Speaker 1: traded him, so and it worked out. It's worked out,
- 6:00Speaker 1: I would say for both teams because Matthew Stafford had
- 6:03Speaker 1: probably maxed out on what he could give the Lions,
- 6:07Speaker 1: and what he delivered to the Rams was the Super
- 6:08Speaker 1: Bowl championship, and Goff can possibly deliver that. He couldn't
- 6:13Speaker 1: do it as a Ram, but he might be able
- 6:15Speaker 1: to do it as a Lion. I think the Lions
- 6:17Speaker 1: are as good as about anybody in the NFL, Chiefs included.
- 6:22Speaker 1: We'll see come playoff time. I just want to see
- 6:24Speaker 1: if the Rams can't make it, I'd like to see
- 6:26Speaker 1: the Lions make it, if only because they've never been
- 6:28Speaker 1: in the Super.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Bowl'd be good story.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Only the Lions, the Browns, the Texans, and the Jaguars
- 6:36Speaker 1: have yet to make it to a Super Bowl, so
- 6:39Speaker 1: and the Lions certainly have the best chance of all
- 6:41Speaker 1: them all. Right up next, we'll talk some football of
- 6:44Speaker 1: the high school and collegiate variety in the state of
- 6:46Speaker 1: Texas with Greg Keepper, managing editor of Dave Campbell's Texas
- 6:49Speaker 1: Football Magazine. When we continue on Sports Radio Am thirteen
- 6:52Speaker 1: under the zone
