- 0:44Raymond Aaron: Yes, dear listener and viewer, this is Raymond Aaron once again with a fascinating interview.
- 0:52Raymond Aaron: You will grow to love and admire this gentleman.
- 0:56Raymond Aaron: Listen carefully. He's a real estate investment developer who started at 21. That's amazing.
- 1:03Raymond Aaron: By buying a duplex with his brother and steadily scaled his portfolio while working long physical
- 1:10Raymond Aaron: hours as a marine welder. That blue collar origin and self-funded growth gave him instant credibility
- 1:16Raymond Aaron: with investors and partners because he literally built his portfolio from sweat and risk, not
- 1:23Raymond Aaron: inheritance. Then suddenly, very recently, he survived a catastrophic workplace accident
- 1:31Raymond Aaron: when a 10,000 pound pipe struck him, causing severe head trauma and significant memory loss.
- 1:40Raymond Aaron: Through disciplined nutrition, intensive rehab, and an almost obsessive commitment to recovery,
- 1:47Raymond Aaron: he rebuilt his cognitive and physical capacity to the point of completing, get ready for this,
- 1:53Raymond Aaron: a half marathon just nine months after his injury. That comeback shifted his focus from just
- 2:01Raymond Aaron: accumulating doors to building a life anchored in freedom, family, health, and purpose. And he's now
- 2:10Raymond Aaron: gone on to purchase and develop larger and larger pieces of real estate. But acquiring
- 2:17Raymond Aaron: multi-millionairehood through real estate, though good, admirable, amazing, isn't as amazing
- 2:26Raymond Aaron: as coming from that head disaster to amazing success. So dear Andrew Gauthier, you are our
- 2:36Raymond Aaron: guest, not because of your success, but because of your recovery from a horrible state, which for
- 2:44Raymond Aaron: others might have lasted their entire lifetime. So please tell us about this accident. Tell us how
- 2:51Raymond Aaron: that day started and exactly what happened so we can experience your amazing recovery.
- 2:58Andrew Gauthier: Yeah, for sure. Thank you so much, Raymond, for having me. And yeah, the story is,
- 3:03Andrew Gauthier: it's a difficult one, but it's one of perseverance and a lot of strength. So
- 3:09Andrew Gauthier: yeah, that day, just like another day, I was working out in Windsor, Ontario,
- 3:14Andrew Gauthier: I was working out on the lake and I was driving some pipe piles and I went to cut a piece of steel free.
- 3:23Andrew Gauthier: And at that moment, the steel kicked back.
- 3:26Andrew Gauthier: It hit me in the side of the head and it sent me flying into a beam that was in the middle of the lake.
- 3:33Andrew Gauthier: So at that point, I was barely conscious.
- 3:38Andrew Gauthier: Nobody was around.
- 3:40Andrew Gauthier: And my odds were very unlikely of survival.
- 3:44Andrew Gauthier: So at that point, there was an inspector.
- 3:48Andrew Gauthier: He came by boat.
- 3:49Andrew Gauthier: He found me in the beam.
- 3:51Andrew Gauthier: He brought me back to shore and got me to the hospital immediately.
- 3:56Andrew Gauthier: So essentially, he saved my life and started a journey that I couldn't wish upon my enemy.
- 4:04Andrew Gauthier: But it got me to a point of amazing success and strength and growth.
- 4:10Andrew Gauthier: So from that day on has been a battle, a struggle, and one of the biggest fights of my life.
- 4:17Andrew Gauthier: But I'm here now and I feel very blessed to be here.
- 4:22Raymond Aaron: Before we go on to your struggle, what was the moment, or maybe there wasn't one, but I've interviewed other people and they tell me there was a moment.
- 4:31Raymond Aaron: Like they were lying, semi-conscious in the hospital bed, and they overheard a doctor say to a nurse, he'll be a vegetable for the rest of his life.
- 4:40Raymond Aaron: And in his unconscious state, he said, no, not me.
- 4:43Raymond Aaron: So was there a moment like that for you?
- 4:46Andrew Gauthier: So I remember very, very little.
- 4:48Andrew Gauthier: To be honest, I have a two year memory gap from before the accident.
- 4:52Andrew Gauthier: The accident is a little bit of a blur.
- 4:56Andrew Gauthier: I remember bits and pieces kind of getting to the hospital, my friends from work, you
- 5:03Andrew Gauthier: know, being obviously very terrified trying to get me there.
- 5:07Andrew Gauthier: So, but yeah, the memory is very, very low from that, that, that accident.
- 5:13Andrew Gauthier: But yeah, it's.
- 5:16Raymond Aaron: Andrew, what gave you the courage to say, no, that's not going to be my life.
- 5:21Raymond Aaron: What was it?
- 5:22Andrew Gauthier: What happened?
- 5:23Andrew Gauthier: Well, so yeah, I was in the hospital for a couple of months after the, after I was released
- 5:28Andrew Gauthier: from the hospital, I started rehabilitation very, very immediately.
- 5:33Andrew Gauthier: The pain, the memory gaps, I maybe had 10% cognitive function.
- 5:39Andrew Gauthier: I was unable to remember most things in my life.
- 5:43Andrew Gauthier: So once I started rehabilitations and the doctors were explaining to me the significance
- 5:48Andrew Gauthier: of the injury, they put it this way.
- 5:51Andrew Gauthier: They said, this recovery with brain injuries, there is no set guidelines on how this is
- 5:58Andrew Gauthier: going to go.
- 5:59Andrew Gauthier: You could recover 1%.
- 6:01Andrew Gauthier: you could recover 100%.
- 6:03Andrew Gauthier: It'll be based on how hard you work,
- 6:05Andrew Gauthier: how much you give towards this.
- 6:08Andrew Gauthier: So we need you to do everything you can
- 6:10Andrew Gauthier: if you want to have a chance of a normal life again.
- 6:14Andrew Gauthier: So at that moment, it gives me chills
- 6:17Andrew Gauthier: just thinking about it because your whole life,
- 6:21Andrew Gauthier: it turns so important.
- 6:23Andrew Gauthier: How hard can you fight for the things you love, right?
- 6:28Andrew Gauthier: for my family, for my memory, for my life, everything I've built to that point. Now the
- 6:34Andrew Gauthier: battle has begun. It's begun. It's, it's started. And at that point I decided there is nothing I
- 6:41Andrew Gauthier: wouldn't do. And I will fight until the very end to get what I worked so hard for. So. Wow. Now I
- 6:48Raymond Aaron: want to, I want to go deep into that sentence. Yeah. Think back to your childhood. Was there an
- 6:55Raymond Aaron: incident in your childhood that was similar to that when you were playing a game or you were in sports
- 7:02Raymond Aaron: or you were in school studying for an exam and you said darn it I'm gonna succeed no matter what
- 7:07Andrew Gauthier: was there an incident like that yeah a couple couple maybe not to that extent but I played a
- 7:13Andrew Gauthier: high level soccer growing up I you know I competed in a lot of academic achievements and
- 7:21Andrew Gauthier: And yeah, just that drive, that fight, that the chance of failure was zero in my mind.
- 7:29Andrew Gauthier: And everything I can do, I would give it.
- 7:32Andrew Gauthier: So I feel like it was kind of born or it was, you know, taught to me from a very young age that, you know, giving up isn't an option.
- 7:40Andrew Gauthier: You know, I'm going to succeed.
- 7:41Andrew Gauthier: I'm going to do everything I can.
- 7:43Andrew Gauthier: I'm going to be my best self.
- 7:45Andrew Gauthier: And yeah, there was no difference for this situation.
- 7:48Andrew Gauthier: So, yeah.
- 7:50Raymond Aaron: So you were an achiever from youth.
- 7:54Raymond Aaron: There was something inside of you that said, I'm not going to fail today.
- 7:59Raymond Aaron: We're going to win this game. Soccer is my sport.
- 8:03Raymond Aaron: Whatever subject you were studying for, you put your all into it.
- 8:08Raymond Aaron: And that was a dress rehearsal for this 10,000 pound pipe hitting your head.
- 8:15Raymond Aaron: For gosh sakes, that's a five ton pipe hitting your head.
- 8:19Raymond Aaron: And you didn't have a helmet on, right?
- 8:21Andrew Gauthier: I had a helmet on.
- 8:22Andrew Gauthier: The helmet went about 50 feet into the lake.
- 8:26Andrew Gauthier: All the doctors are saying they were, they're so surprised I was alive.
- 8:30Andrew Gauthier: They said nine out of 10 times I would be dead or at least paralyzed.
- 8:34Andrew Gauthier: They said, it's a miracle I'm alive.
- 8:36Andrew Gauthier: And to regain my cognitive ability, my physical ability, the way I have is a modern day miracle.
- 8:45Andrew Gauthier: So I don't take that for granted.
- 8:48Raymond Aaron: So I don't have a clear picture.
- 8:50Raymond Aaron: You are a marine, what?
- 8:53Raymond Aaron: A marine?
- 8:54Andrew Gauthier: So a marine application welder.
- 8:56Andrew Gauthier: So I focus primarily on water applications.
- 8:59Andrew Gauthier: So at this point we were driving, we were doing a ferry dock wall extension.
- 9:04Andrew Gauthier: So we were extending the ferry dock wall so they could put in a new ferry to access one
- 9:10Andrew Gauthier: of the private islands out in Windsor.
- 9:13Andrew Gauthier: So I work on the water.
- 9:15Andrew Gauthier: Most of my career on the water, in the water, kind of just, yeah, all over Canada, long hours away from family, just kind of, you know, making as much as I can.
- 9:27Raymond Aaron: Paint me this picture.
- 9:29Raymond Aaron: You're on the water.
- 9:30Raymond Aaron: Yep.
- 9:30Raymond Aaron: This giant pipe hit you in the head and your helmet flew 50 feet into the water.
- 9:36Raymond Aaron: Yep.
- 9:37Raymond Aaron: But you didn't land in the water.
- 9:39Raymond Aaron: Where did you land?
- 9:40Andrew Gauthier: So we had platforms.
- 9:42Andrew Gauthier: We had little beams lined up beside the pipes.
- 9:45Andrew Gauthier: in order to walk on them so we could set the pipes.
- 9:48Andrew Gauthier: So luckily I landed in the beam, the walkway beam.
- 9:53Andrew Gauthier: Because yeah, at that point, if I was in the water, I'd be dead.
- 9:57Andrew Gauthier: There's no way I would have survived.
- 9:59Andrew Gauthier: So another blessing, you know, everything, all the stars aligned to keep me alive that day.
- 10:06Andrew Gauthier: And yeah, it's been an incredible journey.
- 10:11Raymond Aaron: So there's all this water around you.
- 10:13Andrew Gauthier: Yes.
- 10:14Raymond Aaron: this gigantic great lake around you.
- 10:18Andrew Gauthier: Yep.
- 10:18Raymond Aaron: And you landed on one little beam of water.
- 10:23Raymond Aaron: Yeah.
- 10:24Andrew Gauthier: Yeah.
- 10:25Andrew Gauthier: Yep.
- 10:25Andrew Gauthier: Very, very lucky.
- 10:26Raymond Aaron: You wouldn't have had the cognitive ability to,
- 10:30Raymond Aaron: to will yourself to swim.
- 10:31Andrew Gauthier: There's no way.
- 10:32Andrew Gauthier: Yeah.
- 10:33Andrew Gauthier: Yep.
- 10:34Andrew Gauthier: Wow.
- 10:34Andrew Gauthier: That would have been it.
- 10:36Raymond Aaron: And then you ran a half marathon for God's sakes.
- 10:39Andrew Gauthier: Yeah.
- 10:40Andrew Gauthier: Yeah.
- 10:41Andrew Gauthier: So,
- 10:41Andrew Gauthier: well,
- 10:41Andrew Gauthier: about six months,
- 10:43Andrew Gauthier: seven months in,
- 10:43Andrew Gauthier: They told me, you know, you can start getting outside, trying to walk, trying to do a couple
- 10:49Andrew Gauthier: things like so they they told me I got I got a smartwatch monitor your heart rate when the
- 10:54Andrew Gauthier: symptoms become severe, the cognitive impairment, the pain when it gets severe, slow down.
- 11:01Andrew Gauthier: So at first they said, go outside, start with a two minute walk.
- 11:05Andrew Gauthier: At that point, obviously being me, I pushed it to five minutes.
- 11:08Andrew Gauthier: The next day they said, go for a 10 minute walk.
- 11:10Andrew Gauthier: I pushed it to 15.
- 11:12Andrew Gauthier: And then eventually, as they were guiding me along my rehabilitation, I just kept pushing and pushing.
- 11:18Andrew Gauthier: And all that was in my head constantly was the neurologist when he told me that, like, this is about you, what you have inside of you.
- 11:26Andrew Gauthier: You need to give everything you have. So in my head, I'm not giving up.
- 11:30Andrew Gauthier: I'm pushing through the pain. And yeah, nine months later, I ran into the Hamilton half marathon and just crossing that finish line from the.
- 11:41Andrew Gauthier: The year I had prior was the best moment of my life.
- 11:46Andrew Gauthier: Like I broke down in tears and it was just, yeah, it was an amazing event.
- 11:52Andrew Gauthier: And yeah, it just kept me pushing forward.
- 11:55Andrew Gauthier: So, you know, gave me that momentum and that, yeah, that great feeling to keep pushing.
- 12:08Raymond Aaron: I need my subscribers to understand something.
- 12:11Raymond Aaron: I personally have run three marathons. I started running after I was an extremely successful cross-country ski racer. Not just a cross-country skier, but a cross-country ski racer. I was in fabulous shape. And it took me nine months to get ready for my first marathon.
- 12:32Raymond Aaron: yeah for him to come from almost no cognitive ability and possibly having stayed there and be
- 12:40Raymond Aaron: a vegetable for the rest of his life and suddenly do a half marathon in nine months that oh my gosh
- 12:47Raymond Aaron: you have to be a marathoner to know how big that is because you can say it in a sentence nine months
- 12:54Raymond Aaron: later i ran a half marathon yeah it's as easy as saying i sucked a lollipop you know yeah sentence
- 13:00Raymond Aaron: but the effort behind it oh man that is a miracle yeah no it was uh it was fantastic yeah it was a
- 13:09Andrew Gauthier: great experience and I kept my running journey started going so I've been running almost every
- 13:14Andrew Gauthier: day since and I just completed my first marathon actually so I'm excited about that and it's
- 13:20Raymond Aaron: Tell me what your time was.
- 13:22Andrew Gauthier: I did three hours, 54 minutes.
- 13:26Andrew Gauthier: So not fantastic.
- 13:28Raymond Aaron: Andrew, anything under four hours is a wild success.
- 13:34Raymond Aaron: It's like a four-minute mile.
- 13:35Raymond Aaron: For sure.
- 13:36Raymond Aaron: Four-hour marathon, you're a success.
- 13:38Andrew Gauthier: Yeah.
- 13:39Andrew Gauthier: My first one was in Honolulu, Hawaii as well.
- 13:42Andrew Gauthier: So the weather was in December, and it was very, very warm,
- 13:46Andrew Gauthier: and the incline was pretty substantial.
- 13:48Andrew Gauthier: So I was very happy with my time.
- 13:51Raymond Aaron: another great experience. Wow, I'm so proud of you. Now, do you have any lasting impact or damage
- 14:02Raymond Aaron: from that that hasn't healed? Yeah, so I still I do have a couple year memory gap from the before
- 14:08Andrew Gauthier: the accident, maybe a year or two where my memory is very, very low. I remember some things,
- 14:16Andrew Gauthier: Some things I was kind of advised just to like let them be the past.
- 14:21Andrew Gauthier: I still have some psychological trauma.
- 14:24Andrew Gauthier: I do have some PTSD symptoms.
- 14:27Andrew Gauthier: I have some night terror and then some panic attacks associated with the incident.
- 14:32Andrew Gauthier: So, you know, that's that's very difficult to deal with.
- 14:37Andrew Gauthier: But from what I've overcome and the person I am today, all the blessings I've been given,
- 14:43Andrew Gauthier: all of these ailments and issues I'm struggling with now,
- 14:47Andrew Gauthier: it's easy to brush them off and still smile every single day and truly feel
- 14:52Andrew Gauthier: blessed. The memory gap is, is difficult.
- 14:55Andrew Gauthier: It's hard to look at pictures and realize things happened to me in my life.
- 15:01Andrew Gauthier: And they're not really me, right? They're,
- 15:03Andrew Gauthier: they're a different part of me that that still exists, but yeah,
- 15:06Andrew Gauthier: the memory's gone. So it was very difficult to kind of accept that. But,
- 15:12Andrew Gauthier: You know, with all my successes and all the amazing people in my life, I'm just I'm very, very happy to be alive and to be where I am.
- 15:21Andrew Gauthier: So, yeah, it's it's a small, small price to pay for where I am.
- 15:28Raymond Aaron: So sometimes it's the things that we think of as, quote, bad that are our greatest benefits.
- 15:37Raymond Aaron: For example, in some tiny way, you would never have gotten to be a guest on my podcast.
- 15:44Andrew Gauthier: That's for sure.
- 15:45Andrew Gauthier: Yeah.
- 15:46Andrew Gauthier: And I'm grateful for you, Aaron.
- 15:49Andrew Gauthier: Raymond, sorry.
- 15:51Andrew Gauthier: Yeah.
- 15:51Andrew Gauthier: Yeah.
- 15:52Andrew Gauthier: Yeah.
- 15:52Raymond Aaron: Very, very impressed.
- 15:54Raymond Aaron: Very impressed with you.
- 15:55Raymond Aaron: And by the way, though I'm 81 years old, when I was growing up, my mother was quite a bully
- 16:02Raymond Aaron: and she belittled my dad all the time.
- 16:05Raymond Aaron: and she made fun of him. She would send him shopping. And when he came back, she would take
- 16:10Raymond Aaron: the items out of the shopping bag, looking for mistakes, and then yelling at him for it. Well,
- 16:16Raymond Aaron: this morning, I went shopping, and my wife gave me a shopping list. And bang, I was right there
- 16:22Raymond Aaron: back being my dad, embarrassed that I would make a mistake. So that's 75 years ago, I remember
- 16:30Raymond Aaron: my mother yelling at my father yes i still felt shame embarrassment don't make a mistake you're
- 16:38Raymond Aaron: going to fail you better ask one of the attendants to make sure you're buying the right thing and here
- 16:43Raymond Aaron: you are having a far worse trauma than i had mine was just psychological yeah verbal and yours was
- 16:52Raymond Aaron: like gigantic physical and neurological and yet you've you've recovered in just a couple years
- 17:00Raymond Aaron: with the minor things that you've mentioned, which, heck, those are minor compared to living a happy,
- 17:06Andrew Gauthier: successful, wealthy life. For sure. For sure. And like, you go back and forth between feeling
- 17:12Andrew Gauthier: blessed and cursed, right? Why me? What did I do? Why? Why is this happening? But the the percept,
- 17:19Andrew Gauthier: the perception on on the way I'm perspective on life, the way I'm living now is impossible to,
- 17:26Andrew Gauthier: to see unless you go through something major. So I'm very blessed to, to be able to, you know,
- 17:31Raymond Aaron: be here and have what I have. So tell me if you can, you might not be able to answer this,
- 17:37Raymond Aaron: a really tough question. Yep. What benefit did you get from going through this struggle?
- 17:45Raymond Aaron: What lasting gift has it given you? Yeah. So there's, there's been so many,
- 17:50Andrew Gauthier: Like, honestly, yeah, yeah, it's just, yeah, my appreciation for my loved ones, my appreciation for for family, for friends, for for good people, for wealth, and just all the little things in life.
- 18:09Andrew Gauthier: So when, when you lose most of your memory, you lose your life. So once, once, once my memory was coming back, I would be, I, I, I remember this one time when I first started, um, able first begin, uh, to go outside and walk and do stuff.
- 18:28Andrew Gauthier: I went with my niece and nephew and we were walking through through this path and and it started raining and there was a rainbow.
- 18:38Andrew Gauthier: And it was like it was like a deja vu because like in my head, I haven't experienced this before.
- 18:45Andrew Gauthier: This is a new thing for me.
- 18:47Andrew Gauthier: But I'm remembering all of these beautiful times and I broke down in tears.
- 18:52Andrew Gauthier: And and and these moments have happened so much since.
- 18:56Andrew Gauthier: It's just all of the beauty in the world, all of the great things that everybody experiences.
- 19:03Andrew Gauthier: It's like they're happening again for the first and second and third time.
- 19:07Andrew Gauthier: And being so blessed to be alive, they're not taken for granted.
- 19:12Raymond Aaron: Oh, gosh, I'm tearing up right now.
- 19:15Andrew Gauthier: Yeah, I'm so.
- 19:15Raymond Aaron: Oh, my gosh.
- 19:16Raymond Aaron: You saw a rainbow for the first time as an app.
- 19:20Andrew Gauthier: Yeah.
- 19:21Raymond Aaron: Oh, my gosh.
- 19:22Raymond Aaron: What you said, when you lose your memory, you lose your life.
- 19:26Andrew Gauthier: Yeah. I never realized that. Yeah. Everything that makes you, you everything. Yeah. That's why the fight was it's life or death. Like it's, do you have it in you to survive? What? Yeah. It's, it's a lot.
- 19:43Raymond Aaron: Now, this is a silly question. Yeah. But when you came back from your memory, did you have to become a marine welder again? Like, did you have to try the test again? Or did they just let you keep going?
- 19:56Andrew Gauthier: So, so right now, actually, so I still have pretty severe psychological trauma related to that incident. So I still haven't been able to return to that line of work.
- 20:10Andrew Gauthier: Oh, my gosh. Yeah. So I because you can't remember the skills. No, but because the the the memory that the trigger is too big. Yeah. I can't put on the hard hard hat. I can't put on the boots. I'll have I have panic attacks. I drive by a construction site. So I'm working still with three therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists.
- 20:35Andrew Gauthier: I'm still working with all these people every single week to try to address some of these
- 20:40Andrew Gauthier: traumas and triggers and hopefully one day overcome them.
- 20:44Andrew Gauthier: But right now it's just focusing on trying to smile, be happy and see what's on the other
- 20:49Andrew Gauthier: side of life if it can't be back to what I was before my accident.
- 20:54Raymond Aaron: So, oh my gosh.
- 20:56Raymond Aaron: Yeah.
- 20:56Raymond Aaron: You and I are going on a cruise together.
- 20:59Raymond Aaron: Yes, we are.
- 21:00Raymond Aaron: Yeah, so please save a spot high up on your hug card for me.
- 21:05Raymond Aaron: I can't wait to greet you, shake your hand and give you a big hug and congratulate you in person.
