- 0:05This edition of It's My Money is brought to you by Brenthurst Wealth, your partner
- 0:11for global wealth creation.
- 0:13Welcome to It's My Money.
- 0:15It's My Money is brought to you by Brenthurst Wealth, South Africa's
- 0:17multi-award winning boutique wealth manager.
- 0:19With me today is a director and the founder of Brenthurst Wealth and that's
- 0:23Magnus Haystack.
- 0:25Now Magnus, it's the time of year when we look back and we must look back, it's
- 0:27important.
- 0:28And in order to look forward, we have to look back now.
- 0:31And it's also the time of the year of what I call the Christmas creep, Magnus,
- 0:37especially when it comes to South Africa,
- 0:39because every year Christmas creeps a little bit backward towards the beginning
- 0:44of December.
- 0:46And what people tend to say to me is, Lindsay, I can't speak to you next week
- 0:50because I'm on holiday, because it's been such,
- 0:52it's been such a difficult year.
- 0:53And they say the same thing every year.
- 0:55Has it been a difficult year, 2025?
- 0:58Personally, I don't think so, Magnus.
- 1:01You know, as far as the markets are concerned, it's been a phenomenal year.
- 1:04I mean, the funds have been quiet.
- 1:07Clients have not been complaining.
- 1:08They've made tremendous amounts of money in virtually every asset class thinkable
- 1:15on Earth.
- 1:17So it's been an extraordinarily profitable year for investors.
- 1:20And if you look at the American markets at record highs, the S&P 500, the Dow Jones,
- 1:26global markets, South Africa, I'll come to South Africa in a minute, merging markets,
- 1:32Japan,
- 1:34gold, silver.
- 1:35The poor cousin of markets this year, believe it or not, has been Bitcoin.
- 1:40I think it's the third or the fourth year that Bitcoin will not be making a profit.
- 1:47down about 10% year on year.
- 1:49But for the rest of the traditional investments, it's been an absolute cracker
- 1:55of a year.
- 1:57And people have made a tremendous amount of money.
- 1:59Indeed.
- 2:00And you said in your very well crafted statement just now, you said, I'm going to
- 2:07get to South Africa in a minute because you,
- 2:09I'm afraid, have become the pantomime villain over the years when it comes to
- 2:14South Africa, because you keep on saying you've got to diversify.
- 2:16If you'd have gone into this particular market overseas and compare it to the all
- 2:20share index of the JSC,
- 2:22look at the difference between the performances.
- 2:22And as I said, you've got this unwarranted, I think, reputation.
- 2:27But this year, Magnus, something's happened in South Africa, hasn't it?
- 2:31At a macro and at a micro level.
- 2:34When I say micro, actually, that's wrong.
- 2:36A market level.
- 2:38Something's going on.
- 2:40Many years ago, there was an economist with the surname of Dick.
- 2:44I think it was Pieter de Kivit.
- 2:47He's a Dutch South African economist.
- 2:49And he said that South Africa over the years, over the decades,
- 2:54progressed through political disasters and economic windfalls.
- 2:59And that was exactly what happened again this year.
- 3:02If you look at the political situation,
- 3:05you still have the ANC and the DA in some form of a coalition stumbling along.
- 3:11You still have confiscation of...
- 3:13property, you still have the Bella Act, you still have all the boogeyman laws that
- 3:20have been coming,
- 3:22and yet the JSC is up 37% for the year.
- 3:26But let me put it into context.
- 3:28It's got absolutely nothing to do with the ANC or very little to do with the
- 3:35ANC's economic policies.
- 3:37And what I mean by that is pure luck.
- 3:40The gold price started taking off in April.
- 3:43And so we're in a full-blown commodity boom.
- 3:47So our gold shares have gone through the roof.
- 3:49They're up 150%.
- 3:51Our platinum shares are other resources sector, which is driven mainly by global
- 3:57trends.
- 3:59And despite the problems with the railways and the ports, our exports are booming in
- 4:05those sectors.
- 4:07So the price, which is not controlled by the ANC, thank goodness, has just gone
- 4:10through the roof.
- 4:12Now, that is a major, major kicker to the South African economy if that happens.
- 4:15Just before you go on, Magnus, just a quick one there.
- 4:18When you come to the ports and the transport of goods from and to the ports
- 4:25so that exports can be
- 4:27more efficiently distributed, there has been improvement.
- 4:29But a lot of that has had to do with the private sector, I think, private-public
- 4:35partnerships.
- 4:37But it has got a little bit better.
- 4:39And we don't have load shedding.
- 4:41Whether that's to do with the ANC or not, I don't know.
- 4:43But there is a little bit of credit due, according to some quarters.
- 4:46There is a little bit of credit due, but it's, look,
- 4:49the electricity situation has been a major, major improvement.
- 4:54The fact that we don't have load shedding, that has been a major factor.
- 4:58Secondly, they are rolling out the distribution contracts for electricity.
- 5:05The government has just signed a contract with an Indonesian company.
- 5:10I think it's ICTSI to run the port of Devon.
- 5:15It's with a
- 5:20Philippine company.
- 5:22Also bought the Pearl Valley Golf Course while he was at it.
- 5:26So there are movements.
- 5:28And it could herald the start of a much more sustainable uptake.
- 5:34upturned in the South African economy.
- 5:36But remember, there was a famous economist many, many years ago, I can't recall, who
- 5:42said, look,
- 5:43if the facts change, your view has to change on the South African economy.
- 5:47And for the last two years, I've been saying, my very,
- 5:51very urgent appeal to get go offshore has actually been toned down quite
- 5:57significantly and
- 5:59very happily putting money into the South African market because the facts have
- 6:02changed.
- 6:04We have had a credit, slight credit upgrade.
- 6:05We've come off the grade list.
- 6:08Inflation is under control.
- 6:09So
- 6:11I have no problem saying the allocation to South African assets has been profitable
- 6:18very nicely.
- 6:19It's about time that South Africans start repairing their balance sheets after 10 or
- 6:2615 years of underperformance.
- 6:28So that's fantastic.
- 6:30But the crux of the matter is to come back to the offshore-onshore debate.
- 6:32That debate is long dead.
- 6:35Everybody is offshore with half of their money or 60% of their money.
- 6:40I cannot find people who don't have money offshore.
- 6:44Likewise, if you look at all the asset allocation models of the big investment
- 6:50companies,
- 6:52Coronation actually admitted that 60% of their clients have taken their money
- 6:57offshore or they've swapped it into offshore assets.
- 6:59So people are comfortable.
- 7:00with having a very large percentage of their assets into offshore assets,
- 7:06which is not linked to South Africa.
- 7:10And that's a pure diversification play at this point in time.
- 7:13I mean, you cannot get into AI or robotics or, you know,
- 7:18the high-tech stuff unless you take some money offshore.
- 7:22Exactly, the JSC.
- 7:24You cannot buy it in South Africa.
- 7:26No, it's not a vibrant exchange.
- 7:28Yeah, exactly.
- 7:29That argument has not changed.
- 7:32So what I'm saying is, yes, the JSC has been one of the star performers, but it's
- 7:37very interesting, Lindsay.
- 7:39I was listening last week to a Morningstar webinar,
- 7:41and it's a global investment company, a very, very large one.
- 7:46And they were discussing asset allocation models and emerging markets versus
- 7:52developed markets.
- 7:54And they actually said South Africa is not their favorite emerging market.
- 7:58destination, which is very interesting, by the way, to Korea, South Korea is.
- 8:04And they mentioned that Argentina and other companies offer much more compelling
- 8:11long-term
- 8:13traction than South Africa.
- 8:13And the second point is, and this could be very significant in the year going
- 8:19forward,
- 8:21if you look at the net foreign buying of SA equities thus far this year,
- 8:27it is still negative.
- 8:29The foreigners are not participating in this stock market rally.
- 8:36And that tells me, well, it tells me they don't trust it.
- 8:40So one must be very, very careful to think, well, that's it, everything is
- 8:45fine.
- 8:45The foreigners are not buying the JSC.
- 8:47They're buying our bonds, unquestionably.
- 8:49Our bonds have been fantastic instruments for foreign debt or yield chasers.
- 8:56But the foreigners are not buying our equities.
- 8:58Well, this is, yeah, you mentioned bonds, and
- 9:01I was speaking to a very well-known fund manager at a very well-known fund
- 9:07management company based in Cape Town.
- 9:09And we looked at the bond market, and it's been an astonishing performance since the
- 9:14so-called Liberation Day, where the
- 9:16South African 10-year bond was yielding over 11%, and then it got down very close
- 9:21to 8%
- 9:23in the month of December.
- 9:25And I put it to him, I said, well, the bonds have reacted first.
- 9:26The bonds tend to be the smartest of the markets of the asset classes.
- 9:29They reacted first.
- 9:31Is it the case, I put to him, that perhaps the equities have lagged because people
- 9:37are sitting down and saying, is it worth it?
- 9:39The bonds have done this, and there's a few green shoots with grey lists and
- 9:44upgrades from rating agencies, etc.
- 9:46Will the equities be next?
- 9:46And he put it to me that, yes, they will be next.
- 9:49And SA Inc.
- 9:50companies are going to have a terrific...
- 9:532026.
- 9:55Would you buy that argument?
- 9:57If the ANC doesn't stuff it up with
- 10:00101, if they just let the private sector carry on with what the private sector is
- 10:07doing,
- 10:07that is saving South Africa, then I will buy that story.
- 10:11Everything is in place in terms of credit, upgrades, grade listing.
- 10:17I mean, inflation is a 3, 3.5%.
- 10:20Our companies have weathered the worst of the ANC for the last 10 to 15 years.
- 10:26They have trimmed down.
- 10:30They've managed to survive and grow their businesses during this period of
- 10:36time.
- 10:37They just need a little bit of a tailwind.
- 10:41and they will do extremely well.
- 10:43And a classic example of that, and people ask me right now,
- 10:47what is your favorite asset class in South Africa, considering all these various
- 10:53things floating around,
- 10:55and especially for more elderly people, I would look at the listed property sector.
- 10:59I mean, five years ago, it was uninvestable.
- 11:02The guys had problems with ESCOM for a start.
- 11:06They had problems with rates and taxes.
- 11:08They had problems with...
- 11:09city councils, etc.
- 11:11And they've managed to survive, restructure their portfolios,
- 11:16they've sold non-performing assets, improved their balance sheet.
- 11:21And right now, I personally,
- 11:24I'm putting money into listed properties for a safe and a predictable income going
- 11:31into the future.
- 11:33You know, I'm not scared to say, as you get older, you want more predictability.
- 11:37in your investments than you would if you were, let's call it, middle-aged or
- 11:43younger.
- 11:44And I like property.
- 11:46I've spent some time studying the listed property sector, and I think it's offering
- 11:50very,
- 11:50very good value for conservative investors like me.
- 11:54The person that I was referring to in a previous question to you, Magnus, likes
- 12:00the hospital sector.
- 12:02And he's a person of a certain age as well.
- 12:03So you've got hospitals and you've got… property.
- 12:05But whatever, whether it's a property company on the JSC or whether it's an AI
- 12:10company on the NASDAQ,
- 12:12the simple fact is that Brenthurst's principles do not change.
- 12:16Brenthurst Wealth is a company that promotes diversification.
- 12:20That won't change, will it?
- 12:21No matter what geographical sector is doing what?
- 12:25Well, we're a global company.
- 12:26You must remember, we are creating global portfolios.
- 12:30South Africa is only one part of the picture.
- 12:32And it's an an imminently better place to be than
- 12:3520 years or 30 years ago when you were forced by foreign exchange control
- 12:42regulations to have all your
- 12:44money in one basket.
- 12:45Nowadays, South Africans themselves, especially the wealthier South Africans,
- 12:51are global citizens.
- 12:53Their children are global citizens.
- 12:54Their grandchildren are global citizens.
- 12:56So you cannot grow a business or offer a service to the South African market.
- 13:02If you don't have a wide range of skills, both local and offshore,
- 13:09and that's what we've become.
- 13:10I mean, 70% of our assets are offshore and they're staying there.
- 13:15I've not had a single client say, oh, I want to bring my money back and the RAND
- 13:20is so strong.
- 13:22In fact, when the RAND dipped under 17 last week, I had a number of phone calls
- 13:26and guys saying, boy,
- 13:28I want to take some money below 17.
- 13:29It's a bargain.
- 13:31Because there are certain sectors in the world that you cannot get in South Africa,
- 13:35and you've got to take money offshore to get into those sectors.
- 13:40So nothing has changed.
- 13:41We live in a global world.
- 13:42We live in a globalized world, and nothing has changed.
- 13:48Okay, nothing has changed.
- 13:49So nothing will change in 2026, steady as you go.
- 13:53If you're long of the market, stay long of the market.
- 13:55There may be a tweak here and there.
- 13:56You may go from 40% allocation.
- 13:59in one particular area or asset class down to 38 and up from 20 to 22 in another.
- 14:04But not much changes, Magnus.
- 14:07Why change it if you've done so well in the year that's just about to pass?
- 14:13Well, you know, it's a formula that's worked very well.
- 14:18This year, the assets have done very nicely, which is fantastic because
- 14:22remember,
- 14:24I would say most of our clients still have 30 to 50% of their...
- 14:28total assets in South Africa via residential property or commercial
- 14:34property or pension
- 14:36funds that are stuck in South Africa, they have seen a phenomenal uplift in the value
- 14:41of those assets.
- 14:43And as I pointed out earlier, those assets have not grown in dollar terms for a very,
- 14:48very long time.
- 14:502025 was the year where they started coming back.
- 14:53Is this A permanent feature?
- 14:57No.
- 14:58Trees don't grow to the heavens.
- 15:00At some point, the valuations will kick in.
- 15:03And I saw this morning a report that the prescient chief investment officer was
- 15:10commenting that,
- 15:12just be careful.
- 15:14There's been an adjustment to the valuations of SA equities, and they're now
- 15:19fairly priced.
- 15:21Be careful not to get too optimistic.
- 15:22That's normally when people burn their fingers.
- 15:27And also the other thing is if you look at a long-term graph at the performance of
- 15:31the
- 15:31JSC and the performance of the RAND and commodity prices in US dollars, they're
- 15:37very,
- 15:37very strongly correlated in commodity cycles.
- 15:40are cyclical just when everybody is so bullish that's when something happens and
- 15:47it comes down and south africa suffers we are still
- 15:49a commodity country are we not magnus we are indeed and and and one of the signs
- 15:54that be careful
- 15:56is the oil price is plunging yes and the oil price responds much quicker to
- 16:01commodity changes and the oil price
- 16:03currently is telling you the
- 16:03commodity cycle is starting to look a bit toughish and maybe time to just go to the
- 16:10sidelines.
- 16:12Will you rush into the JSE with large amounts of money?
- 16:13No.
- 16:13If I just sit now and allocate between SA and offshore,
- 16:18I still find compelling evidence of good value in Japan, emerging markets,
- 16:25even Europe.
- 16:26And I'm just safer having a nice globally diversified portfolio instead of
- 16:33something,
- 16:35an asset class that's totally exposed in one country.
- 16:38And the last point I need to make about the onshore-offshore debate is one must
- 16:45also never forget a
- 16:47lot of people are very comfortable having their assets elsewhere out of the control
- 16:52or the immediate control of the
- 16:54ANC, and they're very happy to have a nice little nest egg in Guernsey or Isle of Man
- 16:59or whatever the case might be.
- 17:01Yeah, but just be careful.
- 17:02And, of course, I'm promoting you, Magnus, and your company, but if there's any...
- 17:08If there's a change in the law or if you're getting too complacent about your
- 17:14portfolio, don't be.
- 17:16Always keep in touch with your financial advisor because when you become complacent
- 17:20and everything's going well,
- 17:22usually something happens.
- 17:23So the importance of a financial advisor is probably actually more magnified when
- 17:30you are
- 17:30doing well than when you're not doing well.
- 17:32I don't know, but I'm rambling, but keep in touch with your financial
- 17:37A lot of academic studies that have shown that people who try and manage their own
- 17:44stuff,
- 17:44they're invariably way beyond the market.
- 17:46They're always late to the party.
- 17:48But investment, and this is a very important point,
- 17:51investment advice today is not only just commenting or managing markets.
- 17:57You are having to deal as a global investment company with a variety of
- 18:04disciplines.
- 18:06You need to give advice on.
- 18:08tax, South African tax, offshore tax, inheritance tax, inheritance.
- 18:11Should you put your money in a trust?
- 18:13Should it be in an endowment?
- 18:16It's become far more complex than simply just advising on investment.
- 18:20So investment advice is still a very important part,
- 18:24but we are spending now more time giving attention to the structure of your
- 18:30investment.
- 18:32Should it be in your name?
- 18:34Should it be in a trust?
- 18:36What about moving your assets from your name into a trust?
- 18:37Where should this trust be?
- 18:39What about tax?
- 18:40What about inheritance?
- 18:42What about estate duty?
- 18:44So that's normally where people really stuff it up.
- 18:49They try and do it themselves, and then they spend a lifetime building up assets.
- 18:55And by not paying attention to the structure of their investments, it all
- 19:02comes...
- 19:02falling down in a heap by means of a bad will a bad trust or a outdated trust and
- 19:09it also what's the point if you don't spend time on the structure of your global
- 19:16investments and that's
- 19:18where we are spending a lot of time sitting
- 19:19down with our clients who've made money some of them significant amounts of money
- 19:26yes but the investment
- 19:28is in the wrong structure Well, this is interesting.
- 19:29In my inarticulate way before you gave your explanation as to what Brentos has
- 19:36become a client
- 19:38to advisor is that as you get richer and as you diversify more and you go into
- 19:42different countries,
- 19:44different asset classes, etc., your life becomes more complicated.
- 19:46It shouldn't become more complicated.
- 19:48You just hand it over with a fee, of course, to a financial advisor.
- 19:53As you get richer, it becomes more complicated is what I'm saying.
- 19:57That's exactly what a lot of our clients tell us.
- 19:59They say they can actually spend time doing what they want with their kids,
- 20:04grandkids and their hobbies.
- 20:06And they know they have a trusted relationship that's been there for 20 or
- 20:1030 years.
- 20:12And they're comfortable because they know the structure works.
- 20:14Because we do spend a significant amount of time and energy making sure that these
- 20:20things are in place.
- 20:22Good.
- 20:22Magnus, have a very good Christmas and New Year.
- 20:25You've already given us your tip for 2026, which I will repeat, actually.
- 20:31You like the property sector of the JSC, having been beaten up over the years.
- 20:36But I think 2026 is going to be a good one.
- 20:39All round, long may the 2025 mood continue.
- 20:42And thank you very much for your contributions throughout the year.
- 20:45Magnus Haystack is director and founder of Brenthurst Wealth.
