Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome into Jags AM. It's week three of the NFL season.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I'm Kainani Stephens, Brian Sexton, John Ogier with me. We're
- 0:21Speaker 1: going to look back at that loss at Denver. Also
- 0:24Speaker 1: try to look forward a little bit to the Patriots
- 0:26Speaker 1: game this upcoming week. But first, let's start off with
- 0:28Speaker 1: our big things brought to you by GEHA, Government Employees
- 0:31Speaker 1: Health Association. So playing time is big thing number one.
- 0:34Speaker 1: The talk of the town right now, Travis Hunter and
- 0:37Speaker 1: his playing time. Not really showing much playing time on
- 0:39Speaker 1: offense and only playing 60% of snaps on defense. Liam
- 0:43Speaker 1: Cohen addressed the rotation with the cornerbacks in his media
- 0:46Speaker 1: availability earlier this week.
- 0:48Speaker 2: With those guys rotating in. You know, with Buster, Travis, Jari,
- 0:54Speaker 2: and then obviously J. Lou specifically and some of the
- 0:57Speaker 2: nickel stuff.
- 0:58Speaker 3: So, you know, we did it for.
- 1:00Speaker 2: The most part of the last season as well before
- 1:03Speaker 2: Travis got hurt. And it's something that we've got to
- 1:07Speaker 2: continue to do. We have corners that we have confidence in.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Those guys can all make plays for us. They can
- 1:13Speaker 2: all communicate for us. They've been in the system now.
- 1:17Speaker 2: We got to play it better for sure, but we
- 1:19Speaker 2: also got to get to the quarterback to help those
- 1:21Speaker 2: guys out.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Brian, understandably, when you lose, there's always a lot of questions.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Travis Hunter is always being brought up in relation to
- 1:29Speaker 1: this team. Do you think we'll see more play from
- 1:31Speaker 1: him going forward? Do you think this will develop by
- 1:33Speaker 1: the week?
- 1:33Speaker 4: You know, it's going to develop by the week. Everything
- 1:35Speaker 4: with Travis has so far, how much he's going to
- 1:37Speaker 4: play on offense or how much he's going to play
- 1:39Speaker 4: on defense or how much he's going to play total.
- 1:41Speaker 4: You know, I started listening to a podcast in the offseason, Kai,
- 1:43Speaker 4: and it's a national podcast and The hosts use a
- 1:45Speaker 4: lot of the next-gen stats, which I've really never paid
- 1:48Speaker 4: attention to. But just for fun, because I like the show,
- 1:50Speaker 4: I've dived into that pool. And one of the things, John,
- 1:54Speaker 4: that I have figured out in listening to it is
- 1:56Speaker 4: they're more about success rate and quality over quantity. So
- 2:02Speaker 4: if he gives me 27 or 37 or 47 really
- 2:06Speaker 4: good stats, I'll take it. I just want more from
- 2:10Speaker 4: Travis in terms of, more time on the field, more
- 2:13Speaker 4: plays made, because I haven't seen enough plays made yet.
- 2:17Speaker 4: So in a next-gen spirit, give me whatever amount of
- 2:22Speaker 4: plays that you want to give.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Me, but make them good.
- 2:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I think it's a fair topic because
- 2:28Speaker 5: this is a kid who was drafted number two overall,
- 2:32Speaker 5: and a starting corner is what was projected going into
- 2:37Speaker 5: the season. He's starting, uh, It's unusual that he's not
- 2:41Speaker 5: playing 100% of the snaps, but this team is going
- 2:44Speaker 5: to put the guys on the field in situations that
- 2:47Speaker 5: they feel like gives them the best.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Chance, regardless of draft position.
- 2:51Speaker 5: So I think there is a day going forward that
- 2:55Speaker 5: Travis is playing most or all of the snaps at cornerback.
- 3:00Speaker 5: That day's not here yet, and I think it's up
- 3:02Speaker 5: to him to earn his way into that spot over
- 3:05Speaker 5: the course of time.
- 3:06Speaker 1: All right. Our second big thing today is going to
- 3:08Speaker 1: be turning the page, a frustrating loss in Denver, but
- 3:11Speaker 1: they can't carry it over into this week. John, we've
- 3:14Speaker 1: talked a ton about how this team responded last year
- 3:16Speaker 1: to adversity. How do they address that, but not let
- 3:19Speaker 1: it linger this week?
- 3:21Speaker 5: Well, look, I thought all off season that the reason
- 3:25Speaker 5: that I've had faith in this team to contend over
- 3:29Speaker 5: the long run was that it listened to Liam Cohen.
- 3:33Speaker 3: It responds to Liam Cohen.
- 3:35Speaker 5: And I, I don't think that it's going to allow
- 3:39Speaker 5: a short stumble to turn into falling on their face
- 3:42Speaker 5: over the long term. That doesn't make this game easy.
- 3:46Speaker 5: But I think we saw last year it responds well
- 3:50Speaker 5: to Liam Cohen when there's a crisis. And a loss
- 3:54Speaker 5: in the NFL, crisis is too strong. But a loss
- 3:58Speaker 5: in the NFL from outside acts like a crisis. So
- 4:02Speaker 5: I think they're going to respond. But, Brian, I think
- 4:04Speaker 5: this is a tough game. matchup to respond to it is.
- 4:08Speaker 4: And I'll go back to the the controlled burn right
- 4:10Speaker 4: I mean this is a week where you're going to
- 4:12Speaker 4: burn some things down figuratively obviously in the meeting room
- 4:15Speaker 4: you're going to try to break some habits you heard
- 4:17Speaker 4: the players John after the game talk about all the
- 4:19Speaker 4: details and dialing in on the details well maybe they
- 4:23Speaker 4: lost them over the course of the way maybe maybe
- 4:24Speaker 4: there was too much and The head coach said as
- 4:27Speaker 4: much yesterday that they were looking at all of their
- 4:28Speaker 4: plans to make sure they weren't putting too much on
- 4:30Speaker 4: these guys' plate. But this is about a week about
- 4:32Speaker 4: clearing away all the undergrowth, all the brush, and getting
- 4:36Speaker 4: to the important things. And if they have the important
- 4:39Speaker 4: things mastered, the play style, the mindset, the physicality, the
- 4:44Speaker 4: things that the head coach talks all the time about
- 4:46Speaker 4: being important for Jaguars' DNA, then they'll be fine. And
- 4:51Speaker 4: I expect that to happen this week. I heard some
- 4:54Speaker 4: humility in some players voices they were embarrassed by the
- 4:57Speaker 4: way that they played and they expect to win these
- 4:59Speaker 4: games they want to be talked about amongst the big
- 5:02Speaker 4: teams right you want to be talked about with denver
- 5:04Speaker 4: kansas city new england well you lost to denver okay
- 5:08Speaker 4: fine now go beat new england and and we'll talk
- 5:11Speaker 4: about what it means later on down the road.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Well, let's go to our final big thing, which is must-win.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Every week is important, of course, but when you look
- 5:18Speaker 1: at the schedule, Brian, going forward, it doesn't get any easier.
- 5:21Speaker 1: It feels like it might be a must-win this week.
- 5:24Speaker 4: And we're getting down the road right now, it appears. Yeah, listen,
- 5:28Speaker 4: it's not a must-win in terms of making the playoffs
- 5:30Speaker 4: because you have to win your division. But it is
- 5:34Speaker 4: going to be one of those interesting little tiebreakers.
- 5:36Speaker 3: I mean, we talked all offseason.
- 5:37Speaker 4: If the Jaguars had won in week two last year
- 5:39Speaker 4: and beaten the Bengals, and a lot of us thought
- 5:41Speaker 4: that they should have, that that was an erroneous call
- 5:44Speaker 4: by the official on Travis Hunter there on fourth down
- 5:46Speaker 4: and 18, then the Jaguars are the number one seed
- 5:48Speaker 4: in hosting, have a bye week in hosting. the AFC playoffs.
- 5:52Speaker 4: So it's a must win in terms of if you
- 5:55Speaker 4: want to keep pace with the big boys and the
- 5:57Speaker 4: prominent teams in the AFC, if you want to be
- 5:59Speaker 4: in a position for tiebreakers to fall your way when
- 6:03Speaker 4: we get to January, then yes, then it becomes a
- 6:06Speaker 4: must win. But in terms of making the playoffs, which
- 6:08Speaker 4: is the most important goal in front of this team,
- 6:10Speaker 4: winning the division, which is the most important goal in
- 6:13Speaker 4: front of this team, then it is a must win
- 6:15Speaker 4: in week three.
- 6:17Speaker 1: John loves a must win. You're welcome. You're welcome.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Look, you did this for him.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Yes, I did.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I did.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Are we not playing?
- 6:28Speaker 5: If we lose Sunday, do I get not to come
- 6:31Speaker 5: in next week?
- 6:32Speaker 1: Yeah, you get a paid week off.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Look, I get it.
- 6:36Speaker 5: Every game in the NFL, the beauty of this league,
- 6:39Speaker 5: the reason everybody loves it is because every game feels
- 6:42Speaker 5: like a must-win.
- 6:44Speaker 3: It's not a must-win.
- 6:45Speaker 5: I think the Patriots are 1-2 last year, and... and
- 6:48Speaker 5: they wound up being the number one seed. But I
- 6:52Speaker 5: will say it's important for the psyche of this team,
- 6:55Speaker 5: and it's really important in terms of matchups. Maybe it's
- 7:02Speaker 5: a must-win if you want home field at the end,
- 7:04Speaker 5: close to it.
- 7:05Speaker 1: That would be nice.
- 7:06Speaker 3: It's important, but.
- 7:08Speaker 4: It's not a must-win.
- 7:09Speaker 1: It's not a must-win. You've heard it here first. John
- 7:11Speaker 1: weighs in. Stay with us here on DAGZAM after the break.
- 7:14Speaker 1: We're going to do a little this or that.
- 7:25Speaker 3: This or that. This or that.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Welcome back into Jags AM. We're going to do a
- 7:33Speaker 1: little this or that this morning. We touched on the
- 7:36Speaker 1: topic of the week right now, which is Travis Hunter.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Going forward, we don't know what they're going to do,
- 7:40Speaker 1: but we're going to talk about what we might like
- 7:42Speaker 1: to see. Would you like to see him more on
- 7:45Speaker 1: offense in some sort of role, or would you just
- 7:47Speaker 1: like to see him 100% on defense?
- 7:49Speaker 4: I think defense is probably where I want to see him.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Right now, I don't think they need him in offense
- 7:54Speaker 4: as much.
- 7:54Speaker 3: But also because his.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Footwork and his ball skills are things that are touted
- 7:59Speaker 4: by people who know football and people who I trust.
- 8:02Speaker 4: So I would like to see him focused on the
- 8:05Speaker 4: defensive side of the ball because shutdown corners... are difficult
- 8:09Speaker 4: to find. Okay, shutdown's probably not the right word. You've
- 8:12Speaker 4: talked about Bucky's comments on that. But really, good corners, right?
- 8:16Speaker 4: Corners who are impact players, let's put it that way,
- 8:20Speaker 4: are difficult to find. And the Jaguars don't have one
- 8:23Speaker 4: right now. I mean, the hope is he is that guy.
- 8:26Speaker 4: Monteric Bryant is a good corner, but he's not a
- 8:29Speaker 4: shutdown and impact corner, I don't think. So I would
- 8:32Speaker 4: rather see Travis focus on cornerback players. if it was
- 8:36Speaker 4: my choice.
- 8:37Speaker 5: Well, it was pretty clear during training camp that they
- 8:40Speaker 5: realized a little bit in, we need to get him
- 8:45Speaker 5: reps on defense. They limited a lot what he was
- 8:48Speaker 5: doing on offense late in training camp, and he just
- 8:50Speaker 5: focused on defense. Feels like they're still working toward that
- 8:54Speaker 5: of getting him up to speed where he's ready to
- 8:58Speaker 5: play an entire game defensively. So I think first you
- 9:03Speaker 5: want to see him master that. there's always the old
- 9:06Speaker 5: adage in the NFL, let's get a guy going in
- 9:10Speaker 5: an area before you have him do more things. So
- 9:14Speaker 5: I think get him up to speed completely where he's comfortable,
- 9:18Speaker 5: where he absolutely is at a high level defensively, and
- 9:22Speaker 5: then worry about mixing him into more packages on offense because,
- 9:26Speaker 5: as Brian said, I'm not sure this offense needs Travis Hunter.
- 9:31Speaker 3: I think he is a terrific supplement.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:33Speaker 3: When used correctly on offense.
- 9:35Speaker 4: And I do think it's important to point out, and
- 9:37Speaker 4: maybe you have, he won't play his 17th NFL game
- 9:40Speaker 4: until the week before Thanksgiving.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Yeah, he's only played, what, nine games at this point?
- 9:43Speaker 3: He's still a rookie.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 9:46Speaker 4: He missed 10 games last year. So it won't be
- 9:48Speaker 4: until right before Thanksgiving that he's got a full season
- 9:51Speaker 4: of experience under his belt.
- 9:52Speaker 3: So I'm willing to be patient.
- 9:54Speaker 4: And obviously, they have a plan to work him in.
- 9:58Speaker 4: And these guys have won more than they've lost. So
- 10:00Speaker 4: I trust them with their plan. I would like to
- 10:03Speaker 4: see more from him, though, in terms of production when
- 10:07Speaker 4: he's on the field. I'd like to see an interception.
- 10:10Speaker 1: I think we all would like to see that. I
- 10:11Speaker 1: think that would be good. We talked about the O-line
- 10:14Speaker 1: being problematic against Denver. Is this a long-term issue, John,
- 10:19Speaker 1: or do you think this was kind of a one-off
- 10:21Speaker 1: against a really great defensive team in Denver?
- 10:24Speaker 3: I think it's more the latter. I kind of go
- 10:26Speaker 3: back to last season. Overall, when you took a.
- 10:29Speaker 5: 30,000-foot view of 2025 of the offensive line, it's a
- 10:33Speaker 5: pretty good year. And obviously, you don't have a pretty
- 10:36Speaker 5: good year or a very good year offensively without solid,
- 10:41Speaker 5: for the most part, offensive line play.
- 10:43Speaker 3: But there were some clunkers, obviously.
- 10:46Speaker 5: As there usually are with an offensive line, feels like
- 10:49Speaker 5: Sunday was more of a clunker. Not that you can
- 10:54Speaker 5: ignore it, but the body of work showed me last year,
- 10:59Speaker 5: and it's still relatively the same bunch personnel-wise, I expect
- 11:04Speaker 5: them to respond on the offensive line when they feel
- 11:07Speaker 5: like they didn't play great.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Listen, I don't know what the grades are from this week.
- 11:11Speaker 4: You guys probably don't either. But I can tell you
- 11:13Speaker 4: what my eyes told me is that Anton Harrison played
- 11:15Speaker 4: really well against the Browns, did not play well against
- 11:17Speaker 4: the Broncos. Amanda Pregnan is a rookie. He played very
- 11:20Speaker 4: well against the Browns, not as well against the Broncos.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Robert Hainsey got hurt. Ezra Cleveland played very well against
- 11:25Speaker 4: the Browns, not so well against the Broncos. And Colvin
- 11:28Speaker 4: Landon is still obviously working his way back. Thought he
- 11:30Speaker 4: played okay. The issue then is consistency. Can you play
- 11:34Speaker 4: at a consistent level week in and week out? If
- 11:37Speaker 4: this team can play consistently at the Browns level, they'll
- 11:42Speaker 4: be fine. No problem at all.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Well, I also think.
- 11:47Speaker 5: Most, quote, bad offensive line games fit into this category,
- 11:51Speaker 5: and this one certainly did. Every guy had a play
- 11:54Speaker 5: or two they went back. If every guy on the
- 11:57Speaker 5: defensive line has a play or two they went back,
- 12:00Speaker 5: nobody notices. If every guy on the offensive line has
- 12:03Speaker 5: a play or two they went back, it's a tragedy
- 12:05Speaker 5: because it's the nature of offensive lines. So that was
- 12:08Speaker 5: very much the case the other day where most of
- 12:10Speaker 5: them played okay, but moments.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:13Speaker 5: When you multiply two bad moments a player times five,
- 12:17Speaker 5: you have 10, and that.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Ruins the game.
- 12:18Speaker 4: You know who you sound like right there?
- 12:21Speaker 1: Me.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Tony DeSalle.
- 12:23Speaker 4: You said just like I heard Tony ringing in my ears.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Hang out with the EVP too much. No, I'm just kidding.
- 12:27Speaker 1: We can never hang out with Tony enough. Our final
- 12:30Speaker 1: this or that is going to be bigger surprise to you.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Stole this from a fan question yesterday. Were you surprised
- 12:36Speaker 1: more that they couldn't get anything going when they scored
- 12:38Speaker 1: 13 points, including one touchdown, or were you more surprised
- 12:40Speaker 1: that the pass rush couldn't get home?
- 12:42Speaker 5: Yeah, this guy's been all over the place because he
- 12:43Speaker 5: actually emailed me.
- 12:44Speaker 3: This question too.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Well, he's getting a lot of play then with all
- 12:46Speaker 1: the answers.
- 12:47Speaker 5: I would say that I was more surprised only because
- 12:50Speaker 5: of the nature of the league. There are games where
- 12:52Speaker 5: the other team can get the ball out, can scheme you,
- 12:56Speaker 5: and make you struggle with pressure, which happens time to time.
- 13:01Speaker 3: So if I had to pick, Brian, I.
- 13:03Speaker 5: Would be more surprised that a team that I had
- 13:05Speaker 5: watched score, what, 24, 11 straight times, couldn't get that
- 13:11Speaker 5: number Again, neither.
- 13:14Speaker 3: One's shocking because you have bad games.
- 13:16Speaker 5: But I was a little more surprised that they stalled
- 13:19Speaker 5: offensively after scoring 13 in the first half.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Early.
- 13:26Speaker 4: I would say points as well because, you know, over
- 13:28Speaker 4: that stretch of success last year, they had 11 straight
- 13:31Speaker 4: games of at least 23 points.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:34Speaker 4: But they also were scoring 33 points a game when
- 13:37Speaker 4: last season ended. including a couple of 40-point efforts out here.
- 13:42Speaker 4: So I was more surprised that the offense couldn't get going.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I get it.
- 13:44Speaker 4: And again, listening to a lot of national podcasts where
- 13:47Speaker 4: they focused on the Broncos' side of things, that was
- 13:50Speaker 4: one of the best games the Broncos' defense has played,
- 13:52Speaker 4: according to people who follow them, in quite a while. Clearly,
- 13:55Speaker 4: they had a burr under their saddle to get them
- 13:59Speaker 4: fired for that game, get them fired up and ready
- 14:01Speaker 4: to go. And you got the best of the Broncos
- 14:03Speaker 4: on a day, as we talked about, where you didn't
- 14:06Speaker 4: get the best of your offensive line, Quarterback had a
- 14:08Speaker 4: couple of throws that he'd like to have back. The
- 14:10Speaker 4: running game was okay, right? You didn't perform near your best,
- 14:16Speaker 4: and they performed their best. That's what happens in the NFL.
- 14:19Speaker 1: You lose.
- 14:19Speaker 4: So I would say points.
- 14:20Speaker 5: Yeah, Kai and I talked about this a little bit
- 14:22Speaker 5: on a different show, too. Because they finished so hot
- 14:27Speaker 5: last year and because they looked so good against Cleveland,
- 14:30Speaker 5: it's easy to forget that for every team, the first
- 14:33Speaker 5: four or five weeks– the cliche that you're working stuff
- 14:37Speaker 5: out in the first four or five weeks to get
- 14:39Speaker 5: to the rest of the season, it's a cliche for
- 14:41Speaker 5: a reason. And it sort of feels like there was
- 14:44Speaker 5: an element of that against a very good Broncos defense
- 14:48Speaker 5: that sort of conspired to make a very clunky game.
- 14:50Speaker 1: It was tough, but we are turning the page. Stay
- 14:53Speaker 1: with us on JAGZAM. Coming back, we will talk a
- 14:55Speaker 1: little bit about what's going on elsewhere around the NFL.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Around the NFL brought to you by Paramount Plus, the
- 15:04Speaker 1: streaming home of your live local NFL on CBS Games.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Welcome back. We're going to check in. There was a
- 15:11Speaker 1: lot of crazy going on around the NFL, so we
- 15:13Speaker 1: want to keep you up to date on everything. Obviously,
- 15:15Speaker 1: Jaguars are taking on the Patriots this weekend. The Patriots,
- 15:18Speaker 1: who in the very first game in the Super Bowl
- 15:20Speaker 1: rematch did not look great, were able to get their
- 15:22Speaker 1: first win. They beat the Steelers this week, and we'll
- 15:25Speaker 1: get fully into game planning in the Thursday show, but
- 15:29Speaker 1: The Patriots' defense is no slouch either. They are going
- 15:32Speaker 1: to be tough.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Their defensive line really took apart the Steelers' offensive line.
- 15:36Speaker 4: And that's not something I've said a lot in 32
- 15:39Speaker 4: years of covering this league. The Steelers are always good
- 15:42Speaker 4: up front. But you know Mike Vrabel, he's a terrific
- 15:45Speaker 4: defensive coach, so it's not a surprise that he's got
- 15:47Speaker 4: these guys tuned up and playing well. Second straight week,
- 15:50Speaker 4: the Jaguars' offensive line is going to face a very
- 15:53Speaker 4: talented group.
- 15:54Speaker 3: I feel like the Patriots are giving up weight.
- 15:56Speaker 4: It was 13 in the opener it's 13 or fewer
- 15:59Speaker 4: in four consecutive regular season games and going back to
- 16:02Speaker 4: last year the last four regular season games an average
- 16:05Speaker 4: of nine points per game.
- 16:06Speaker 5: Yeah this to me for the Jags this way I
- 16:08Speaker 5: mean we've got a lot of a long way to
- 16:11Speaker 5: go to analyze feels like a game much like the
- 16:14Speaker 5: other day where when you have the ball on their
- 16:18Speaker 5: 25 you better score touchdowns yeah because you're probably not
- 16:21Speaker 5: going to have it eight times there you know so
- 16:25Speaker 5: It's a moment league, and Sunday, the Jerseys didn't take
- 16:29Speaker 5: advantage of their moments.
- 16:30Speaker 3: I think on Sunday, they'll have to do against the Patriots.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Because on the backside of that, you have a corner
- 16:34Speaker 4: in Christian Gonzalez, who is rapidly ascending and is being
- 16:37Speaker 4: talked about in the same rare air as Pat Sertan,
- 16:41Speaker 4: as maybe the best in football. So when you have
- 16:45Speaker 4: that kind of guy on the back end of it,
- 16:46Speaker 4: it makes everybody's job up front easier.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Let's look around the division because the good thing in
- 16:51Speaker 1: terms of Jaguars losing, they're still in first place in
- 16:53Speaker 1: the NFC South. No one else has gotten a win yet.
- 16:56Speaker 1: And that is because the Texans have fallen to Owen too.
- 16:59Speaker 1: They fell to the Bengals this week. And, um, what's
- 17:03Speaker 1: up with the defense? I thought all we hear is
- 17:05Speaker 1: about the Texans defense, but.
- 17:07Speaker 5: I think what was up on Sunday is they played
- 17:10Speaker 5: maybe the best receiver in football.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Oh yes. That Jamar chase catch.
- 17:13Speaker 3: So excellent.
- 17:17Speaker 5: Look, uh, In this day and age, you can be
- 17:21Speaker 5: the best defense in football, which I think the Texans are,
- 17:24Speaker 5: and still get torched at times because it's so geared
- 17:28Speaker 5: toward offense. I think over a 17-game period, I think
- 17:32Speaker 5: the Texans are going to have fewer bad games defensively
- 17:37Speaker 5: than most teams. And if we know anything about the
- 17:40Speaker 5: Texans around here, 0-2, 0-3 starts.
- 17:43Speaker 4: Doesn't seem to stop them.
- 17:44Speaker 3: They're a team that this won't.
- 17:48Speaker 5: Ruin them the way it might ruin other teams because
- 17:51Speaker 5: they're confident they can come back.
- 17:52Speaker 4: From this listen when last season ended for the Texans
- 17:55Speaker 4: there was talk about how that defense could keep them
- 17:58Speaker 4: in games where a quarterback had five turnovers and that
- 18:00Speaker 4: was true although the rest of the league catches up
- 18:03Speaker 4: they watch tape and figure things out as well that
- 18:06Speaker 4: defense is very very very good but that offense is
- 18:09Speaker 4: not now they didn't have Nico Collins he's got a
- 18:12Speaker 4: hamstring they'll get him back at some point that will
- 18:14Speaker 4: certainly help and then Jalen Knoll was it Jalen Knoll
- 18:18Speaker 4: one of their star young receivers towards ACL, I think
- 18:21Speaker 4: it was Jalen Knoll, and their running game is so
- 18:23Speaker 4: completely inefficient. I mean, they are among the least efficient
- 18:27Speaker 4: running teams in football, least dependable running teams in football,
- 18:30Speaker 4: and what you know with C.J. Stroud is two years
- 18:32Speaker 4: ago when he had that big back running behind him,
- 18:35Speaker 4: he was really on target. He was tough to beat.
- 18:38Speaker 4: Last year, not so much because they didn't have a
- 18:41Speaker 4: running game, and David Montgomery was there on opening day,
- 18:43Speaker 4: but he wasn't there last week. So, The Texans' biggest
- 18:46Speaker 4: issue isn't the defense. It's the running game.
- 18:49Speaker 1: We'll play the Colts next, who also are 0-2, so
- 18:51Speaker 1: one of them will get a win, but just keeping
- 18:54Speaker 1: an eye within the division. Another divisional game I've had
- 18:57Speaker 1: my eye on, Titans and Eagles. Eagles eking out the win,
- 19:01Speaker 1: but are the Titans getting better? The Eagles just not
- 19:03Speaker 1: play that well? It might be a combination of both.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Jalen Hurts threw a 90-yard, 97-yard interception in the end
- 19:12Speaker 4: zone that was returned all the way down to their three.
- 19:16Speaker 4: Their passing game is not all that effective right now.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Late in the game, he found Devonta Smith, which turned
- 19:21Speaker 4: it on. The Titans are going to play hard, but
- 19:24Speaker 4: the Eagles were going to win this one because they
- 19:26Speaker 4: were just superior.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Yeah, the Titans.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Have played better early without winning, and they talked about
- 19:35Speaker 5: there being no moral victories and all that.
- 19:37Speaker 3: I get that.
- 19:39Speaker 5: It's still week two, so them playing a contender at
- 19:43Speaker 5: home Not completely shocking they would stick close with them.
- 19:48Speaker 3: I think they're still.
- 19:49Speaker 5: A ways away from being able to have this kind
- 19:53Speaker 5: of an effort, which it took against the Eagles, consistently
- 19:56Speaker 5: to start getting wins that are going to take you
- 19:58Speaker 5: to the.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Top of the division.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Right.
- 20:01Speaker 5: We'll see, although this was an impressive game on their part.
- 20:04Speaker 4: And they've got a young quarterback who's inconsistent. Cam Ward
- 20:07Speaker 4: played better against the Eagles than he did against the Jets,
- 20:09Speaker 4: and that had them in the game to a degree.
- 20:11Speaker 4: I thought the story of this game was the turf
- 20:14Speaker 4: irradiated 150 degrees.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Cleats were melting.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Melting shoes.
- 20:17Speaker 4: And coaches had to have IVs after the game.
- 20:22Speaker 1: That's a tough one.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Those coaches work, man.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Sounds like some Jacksonville heat.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Never heard about that, though. Never heard of guys dehydrating
- 20:27Speaker 4: working the sidelines.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Interesting. Stay with us, we'll tell you what's coming up
- 20:31Speaker 1: the rest of the week. Welcome back to Jags AM,
- 20:43Speaker 1: brought to you by UF Health, the official healthcare partner
- 20:46Speaker 1: of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Welcome back. We have turned the page.
- 20:50Speaker 1: We're talking Patriots this week. We'll get into that full
- 20:53Speaker 1: game plan going forward. What's one area that absolutely has
- 20:57Speaker 1: to be better if they're going to get a win
- 20:58Speaker 1: in week three?
- 20:59Speaker 4: They've got to be more physical up front on the
- 21:00Speaker 4: offensive side of the ball, right? Whether that's holding up
- 21:02Speaker 4: against the pass or whether that's creating second-level opportunities for
- 21:06Speaker 4: the running backs, they have got to slow down the
- 21:09Speaker 4: pass rush, and you do that by running the ball well.
- 21:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll agree with that. You've got to score, give
- 21:15Speaker 3: them the opportunity. I go to a pass rush.
- 21:18Speaker 1: I mean.
- 21:18Speaker 5: The readers that have written me saying that it's hard
- 21:21Speaker 5: to win in the NFL against good teams if you
- 21:25Speaker 5: can't affect the quarterback in big moments, hard to argue
- 21:29Speaker 5: with that.
- 21:30Speaker 4: Well, inconsistency has been a word we've used a lot here,
- 21:32Speaker 4: or at least I have. You have Josh and Trayvon,
- 21:35Speaker 4: three sacks total. and eight or nine pressures in week one,
- 21:39Speaker 4: and then one pressure in week... They've got to play
- 21:42Speaker 4: more consistently, too. If we're going to point at the
- 21:44Speaker 4: offensive line or the quarterback or anybody, those two guys
- 21:48Speaker 4: are your star players, and you need them to show
- 21:50Speaker 4: up every Sunday.
- 21:51Speaker 1: There'll be a lot to it. We'll hear from coaches
- 21:53Speaker 1: and players this week, and we'll be back tomorrow to
- 21:55Speaker 1: discuss exactly what you can expect in week three. See
- 21:58Speaker 1: you soon.
