Transcript
- 0:02Tyler Johnson: Hey everyone, welcome back to 22 Panels. This is the podcast that aims to examine, explore, and elevate the medium of comics. I am Tyler, sitting here at my computer on a Saturday morning, and across the interwebs.
- 0:19Tyler Johnson: Are Tad and Phil, could you hear the thwips that time, guys?
- 0:23Phil: You know, it's like, it's like the…
- 0:24Tad Eggleston: They were good thwips.
- 0:26Phil: I, I got, like, one.
- 0:29Tad Eggleston: I'm saying they were good thwips.
- 0:31Phil: They were… it was fine.
- 0:32Tyler Johnson: I got a different configuration today.
- 0:35Phil: I mean…
- 0:36Tyler Johnson: I'm not… I'm not using my earbuds that have a terrible microphone, so I'm using my headphones and the mic on my camera, so I'm hoping… hoping thwips, because now my voice is right at the microphone.
- 0:51Phil: I say that's why you lean forward. You lean.
- 0:52Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 0:53Phil: Just whip at us.
- 0:54Tyler Johnson: To sweep, yeah.
- 0:55Phil: Yeah.
- 0:55Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 0:58Tyler Johnson: So, how's life.
- 1:01Phil: Oh.
- 1:01Tad Eggleston: Good.
- 1:04Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's been a busy week.
- 1:07Tad Eggleston: Busy spring break for me.
- 1:09Phil: Oh, good.
- 1:10Tyler Johnson: bet.
- 1:11Phil: I forgot what was your spring break.
- 1:12Tad Eggleston: Lots and lots of podcasts.
- 1:15Tad Eggleston: A birthday. And a convention.
- 1:17Phil: Happy birthday! Belated!
- 1:20Phil: I'm sorry that, I didn't text you on the day. That's an awkward thing to admit on air.
- 1:24Tad Eggleston: I gave myself a birthday present. We had a baseball roundtable.
- 1:29Phil: Oh, nice!
- 1:30Tad Eggleston: opening day.
- 1:31Phil: Oh, okay, for, for the new, the new, baseball season?
- 1:34Tad Eggleston: Yeah, second time ever that opening day has been on my birthday, and the first time where that game happened in this continent.
- 1:43Phil: Okay, very cool.
- 1:45Tad Eggleston: Because the last time was,
- 1:50Tad Eggleston: I think it was 2000… yeah, 2008, the… the Rays and the… Red Sox.
- 1:57Tad Eggleston: Okay. Opened in Japan.
- 2:00Phil: So, once every 18 years.
- 2:04Tyler Johnson: Yeah, pretty much.
- 2:05Tad Eggleston: Well, except that that was the first time.
- 2:08Phil: Oh, okay. Huh.
- 2:10Tad Eggleston: You could look at it as once every… this is Major League Baseball's…
- 2:16Tad Eggleston: 150th season? At least by one way of counting?
- 2:23Tad Eggleston: 125ths by another?
- 2:25Tad Eggleston: So, like, that would make it once every… 60 to 75 years.
- 2:35Phil: And you've got two. You've gotten two.
- 2:41Tad Eggleston: So… but yeah, it was fun. I got to talk to Fred, and Eric, and Rob, and Tiffany Babb joined us, and Mark Chiarello joined us.
- 2:53Phil: Nice, that sounds like a… like a fun old time.
- 2:55Tad Eggleston: It was, it was a very fun conversation.
- 2:59Phil: Nice. In terms of comics news, I can see we… our first one of note is that Distillery is back on the publishing schedule. You know, after they announced some…
- 3:12Phil: taken a gap for a little bit. They are…
- 3:16Phil: They're coming back, they're making announcements again, so let's hope that, those books
- 3:22Phil: were delayed, which were A Mischief of Magpies, number 1, White House Robot Romance number 3, City Beneath Her Feet number 3, and White Boat number 3, as well as the Big Burn hardcover and Warm Fusion hardcover. Hopefully those, hit stands sooner rather than later, and that, you know, they can stay strong.
- 3:39Tad Eggleston: I think at least 4 of them are already on the schedule.
- 3:42Phil: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:43Phil: So, you know.
- 3:45Phil: It's… it's… they are definitely one of the more exciting, new comics publishers to come out, so I really hope that, they make it, you know?
- 3:55Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I like their play with their different format sizes and things like that. They put out some unique stuff.
- 4:03Phil: Yeah.
- 4:04Tyler Johnson: But I just don't like it on my shelf, because then I'm like, it doesn't look right compared to all the other trades in graphic novels.
- 4:12Phil: You need a special section to just have the European cut size.
- 4:17Tyler Johnson: Just the weird… the weirdo. Now, I don't
- 4:19Tyler Johnson: if it's European. It's just weird.
- 4:24Tyler Johnson: Just kidding. No, I do like… I do like that they pushed the envelope as far as, like, putting some unique stuff out there.
- 4:31Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 4:33Phil: Absolutely. And then in, comics-adjacent news, we had, the, you know, massive headlines earlier in the week that OpenAI is shutting down Sora, their video app, and blew up their deal, their $200 billion deal with Disney, you know, which I'm hoping this is…
- 4:52Phil: a, you know, a hemorrhaging wound in the AI businesses.
- 4:59Phil: You know, like… It's…
- 5:03Tad Eggleston: It's probably at least a sign that they've realized that between the cost of doing video that's anywhere near worth videoing, and the liability of doing video that could be…
- 5:17Tad Eggleston: Defaming, their lawyers said, yeah, there's no way you'll make money here.
- 5:26Phil: Oh, I mean, yeah, cause that's, that's… You know.
- 5:33Phil: To me, that's at least optimistic, because the whole industry has been propped up on just stuffing money into it, you know, from venture capital and whatnot, that…
- 5:44Tad Eggleston: This is where, like, what you gotta keep your eyes on is…
- 5:51Tad Eggleston: who are they donating money to in the next election cycles? Do they get.
- 5:58Tad Eggleston: Elected, and then start watching literally every bill that starts going through to make certain that there aren't
- 6:05Tad Eggleston: Writers on it that will… make it easier. Cause, like…
- 6:13Tad Eggleston: probably the biggest thing that led to the explosion of guns in the United States is when…
- 6:21Tad Eggleston: Gun companies were all but immunized.
- 6:28Tad Eggleston: They can't be held responsible in any way, shape, or form for… Actions taken with their product.
- 6:37Phil: Okay.
- 6:38Phil: That is an interesting point.
- 6:41Tad Eggleston: So where this gets interesting is if…
- 6:46Tad Eggleston: You… you find some sort of law…
- 6:51Tad Eggleston: proposed where the companies that make the AI aren't responsible for the content used.
- 7:00Tad Eggleston: or the AI is used for.
- 7:03Tad Eggleston: If that happens, then it'll be the Wild West.
- 7:06Phil: Right, and that's… that's… yeah, okay. You know, right.
- 7:10Tad Eggleston: right now, my guess, and this is literally, like, me thinking out loud here, my guess is between the fact that Europe is putting
- 7:21Tad Eggleston: like, real restrictions on some of this stuff, and the fact that the United States doesn't have specific laws…
- 7:30Phil: Right, and…
- 7:31Phil: I know there are, some court cases going on right now in terms of, like, just with the chatbots, like, suggesting kids and mental health issues.
- 7:41Tad Eggleston: Right. Yeah. So, I mean, the last thing they want is for the laws in the United States to go against them, because they,
- 7:53Tad Eggleston: Inflamed public opinion before the laws got written.
- 7:57Phil: Gotcha, okay. So, it is… I guess just to also… did you… did you, like, read an article saying that.
- 8:04Tad Eggleston: I haven't read any articles. I mean, I said there… This is purely me thinking out loud.
- 8:10Phil: I was… I was just making sure of that, because it was… it was one of those where, you know, definitely…
- 8:13Tad Eggleston: I've read tons of articles and tons of books on how laws and PR and whatever works.
- 8:21Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 8:21Tad Eggleston: This is… this is pure in, like, deduction that we shouldn't be claiming victory yet. This is a great sign.
- 8:31Phil: That's what I was saying. I'm merely hopeful that this is a hemorrhaging list, you know?
- 8:35Tad Eggleston: sign, but if it, like, leads people to go, oh, we don't have to worry about this anymore, then you're gonna see something slipped into a bill, and we'll.
- 8:45Phil: Yeah.
- 8:45Tad Eggleston: We don't have to worry about it, and we won't even have talked about it.
- 8:49Phil: And, and I think that, at least for now, it sounds like the companies are, shoring up around, computer programming applications, so using, using AI for code as opposed to for, right.
- 9:03Phil: For other sorts of things.
- 9:06Tad Eggleston: Which, if you do it right, it can be good for.
- 9:08Phil: And that's, that's always…
- 9:10Tad Eggleston: That's the thing, I mean.
- 9:11Phil: That is always the logo.
- 9:12Tad Eggleston: well with it.
- 9:13Tad Eggleston: But, like, used as a tool, there are lots of… of…
- 9:19Tad Eggleston: things that we call AI, and none of them are anywhere near AI.
- 9:24Phil: Right.
- 9:24Tad Eggleston: That, that can be very good tools.
- 9:28Phil: Yeah, and it's… it's… what does drive me up the wall the most about all that stuff is largely the… the lack of clarity, where it's just… they slap the buzzword on it, but…
- 9:40Tad Eggleston: Hell yeah.
- 9:41Phil: have the… Welcome to Capital!
- 9:43Tad Eggleston: Doesn't fill?
- 9:43Phil: Yeah. Oh no, I've been here, I've been here a while, it's, it's, it's not been great. But.
- 9:49Tad Eggleston: I mean, we were talking about Mountain Dew off-air.
- 9:56Phil: Oh, yeah. But yeah, it's… it's… I guess it's also one of those things where,
- 10:03Phil: you know, I don't know if you've come across the term vibe coding, but it's what a lot of the guys that I work with are talking about now, and it just sounds…
- 10:12Phil: Absolutely disgusting, in terms of…
- 10:15Tyler Johnson: My dog's icky.
- 10:16Phil: Yeah, it's not… it's… it's… it… yeah, I mean, it's… I've… I've seen descriptions of how and why,
- 10:25Phil: you know, the use of AI works better in code, the idea that You know, a lot of…
- 10:31Phil: Coding, people look at it less as, you know,
- 10:38Phil: copyrightable… I don't know how copyright works as well with software, but I do know that stuff gets reused and copied
- 10:45Phil: Shit tons more than any other industry, to where plagiarism isn't really a, you know, a concern so much.
- 10:53Tad Eggleston: Like, this still, like…
- 10:57Tad Eggleston: I don't want to fall deep down AI… I hate AI. I don't want to… I don't wanna…
- 11:03Tad Eggleston: called that Deep Down Machine Learning Rabbit Holes.
- 11:06Phil: Right, right, right.
- 11:07Tad Eggleston: But it's still, like… All programs are not equal.
- 11:11Phil: No, and.
- 11:13Tad Eggleston: Like, if you design a machine learning program to do certain parts of code, it could be an amazing tool.
- 11:20Phil: Sure, and IntelliSense has been around, but it's not perfect, it's not… the problem is, is that the buzzword is too… creates too big of a gap between what is actually happening and what.
- 11:35Tyler Johnson: It's not a matter of.
- 11:36Phil: happening. It's not… it's not accurate, and it's… I… I also… I also…
- 11:39Tad Eggleston: I mean, it was one of my conversations yesterday. I essentially think that why AI is so huge right now.
- 11:48Tad Eggleston: Is because you have a lot of really rich, not particularly bright people who've been feeling stupid talking to all of the people making them money for a long time, and they have this dream that they can, rather than having to try to tell
- 12:06Tad Eggleston: the people who make them money now, the smart people that do the programming, the smart people that figure out the marketing or whatnot, that they'll be able to put it into an AI that will do it for them.
- 12:17Phil: Right.
- 12:18Tad Eggleston: I mean, in a lot of ways, like, it's… I laugh, it has nothing to do with taking jobs from the peons. It has to do with taking professional jobs.
- 12:27Phil: Right, and…
- 12:28Tad Eggleston: And it's almost entirely, in my mind, like…
- 12:35Tad Eggleston: ego slash emotional based. It has nothing to do with, it'll be more profitable, it has nothing to do… I mean, they use all of those words, but what it is, is they're tired of feeling stupid when they're talking to the people who actually make them money.
- 12:51Phil: Yes, they're tired of feeling stupid, they're tired of being told no about anything, they're tired of having to, you know, respect people's rights, all of those things. The other… the other thing that I… I feel with it, of why it's a big push, is that, from… from the computing side, the reason they want AI is that it boils down to, okay.
- 13:10Phil: people… people want to be able to talk to the computer, you know? They… they want a Star Trek sort of, like, computer, do this, computer, do that. That's… that's, like, the…
- 13:18Phil: the dream that they're selling to average users. And the problem is, is that that is so much easier said than done.
- 13:29Tad Eggleston: I mean, it depends on what you're having it do, but yeah.
- 13:32Phil: Yeah.
- 13:33Tad Eggleston: On the flip side, it's what Siri and Alexa have been for years.
- 13:36Phil: And that's… that's the funny thing, is that they've… they have that, like, low-grade, okay, this is actually working, and then when you try to
- 13:43Phil: push it.
- 13:44Phil: That's when it all falls apart.
- 13:45Tad Eggleston: Well, because things are complicated.
- 13:47Phil: Exactly.
- 13:49Tad Eggleston: But yeah.
- 13:53Tad Eggleston: What kind of week has it been?
- 13:54Phil: Yeah.
- 13:55Tad Eggleston: It's been a dumb one.
- 13:56Phil: Yup.
- 13:57Tad Eggleston: I mean, my week's been great, but, like…
- 14:00Tad Eggleston: we're… we're… I don't think there's any way to look at the conflict in Iran and say that we're winning. No. Everybody seems to be, trying to point the finger to say, no, this was their idea, this was… no, no, no, it was his idea.
- 14:15Phil: Oh, boy.
- 14:15Tad Eggleston: Hmm.
- 14:16Tyler Johnson: Wait, there's something going on in Iran?
- 14:19Tad Eggleston: Chill! I mean, they would love it if that's what you thought.
- 14:24Tad Eggleston: They're trying really, really hard to convince the American people that it's all done, nothing's going on. I had great, great productive costs
- 14:34Tad Eggleston: talks with the Iranians over the weekend, which is why we're pushing this thing off until Friday, he says, right before the markets open on Monday, immediately to be refuted by the people that he supposedly talked to.
- 14:47Tyler Johnson: Yeah, they're, they're like… Like, no.
- 14:50Tad Eggleston: We, we, we didn't… we didn't have talks.
- 14:54Tad Eggleston: You know, he keeps using the name of the one person who might actually be somebody that he could eventually have negotiations with, except that if he keeps using his name out loud, he's gonna get him killed, and is likely by Israelis as Iranians.
- 15:08Phil: So, I'm pretty sure it was this week that I heard that right before Trump made all those comments about peace talks with Iran, there were investments, you know, made on the betting.
- 15:24Tad Eggleston: Yes!
- 15:24Phil: market.
- 15:25Phil: to make, like.
- 15:26Tad Eggleston: No, it was total market aviation.
- 15:28Phil: Yes, so, so that's, that's… That's the other thing that's absolutely.
- 15:32Tad Eggleston: It was a statement made to bring oil prices down.
- 15:35Phil: Yes, yes, it was…
- 15:37Tad Eggleston: It's not an accident that he said, oh, we're not gonna do anything until after the markets close on Friday, without saying after the markets close.
- 15:46Phil: Right, right.
- 15:46Tad Eggleston: Yo!
- 15:48Tad Eggleston: We're right before the… we're gonna give them a 5-day reprieve to get this figured out.
- 15:56Tad Eggleston: who knows what'll happen? And last night, I heard that they're still talking about Cuba. Like, not next.
- 16:02Phil: to look like.
- 16:02Tad Eggleston: Like, now…
- 16:04Phil: I've heard…
- 16:04Tyler Johnson: Simultaneously.
- 16:06Phil: Yeah, I heard someone was… someone was sending relief to Cuba, I forget.
- 16:10Phil: which country sent a few boats, but I remember hearing that.
- 16:16Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 16:17Tad Eggleston: what kind of week was… was it? It was a dumb one, but we have a new-to-order catalog, so let's… let's talk cool-looking new comics instead.
- 16:28Phil: Yeah.
- 16:30Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 16:32Phil: Alright, first up, we've got a little book called The Eye Collector from Jonathan Ball.
- 16:38Tad Eggleston: It's not really a little book, it's the same size as most comics. Okay. I need to make this clear, because Bad Idea has been making some little books.
- 16:45Phil: That's a good point, that's a good point.
- 16:47Tad Eggleston: 1 in 500 variants, but they have been making some.
- 16:50Phil: Wait, what? 1 in 500 variants where, like, the book is a different trim size?
- 16:55Tad Eggleston: And that's just a different trim size, where they're, like, seriously little.
- 16:59Phil: There's… it's like a pop… it's like a… it's like a micro…
- 17:01Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 17:02Phil: Wow, okay, I did not… to be fair, that does not sound like a good idea, so I… I should not be surprised that that's what this.
- 17:10Tad Eggleston: I'm not eating.
- 17:11Tad Eggleston: I'm not even certain if it's 1 in 500, it might be 1 in 5,000, but, like.
- 17:14Phil: Wow.
- 17:14Tad Eggleston: Like, dollhouse-sized books, except that they're actually, like.
- 17:18Phil: That is wild. Then first up, we have this regular-sized, normal trim, book called The Eye Collector, number one, from Jonathan Ball, GMB, Comichook. The starting first…
- 17:32Phil: The startling first issue of the strangest series on the stands. An ancient being has its curiosity towards Earth reignited when the humans of Apollo 10 mission make wishes over the moon. What is this spectral creature, and what does it want from us? Seeing is believing.
- 17:51Phil: Gonna have a final order cutoff of June 1st, in stores June 26th from Image Comics.
- 17:59Tad Eggleston: I'm reading June 24th?
- 18:03Phil: Did I say 26th?
- 18:05Tyler Johnson: You did.
- 18:06Phil: Well, that's, yeah, just looked at the year.
- 18:08Tad Eggleston: 24th, 2026.
- 18:11Phil: 2026. Yes.
- 18:12Phil: Numbers are hard.
- 18:14Tyler Johnson: Alright, guys…
- 18:15Tad Eggleston: Numbers make sense.
- 18:18Tyler Johnson: This is, next up is Grendel, Devil's Crucible Sedition number 1 from Matt Wagner.
- 18:25Tyler Johnson: The Hounds of Orion have two new weapons in their arsenal. The Grendel Prime himself, back from a 500-year absence, and a clone of the fierce, long-dead Grendel warrior Christine Spahr.
- 18:40Tyler Johnson: Now it's time to take the fight to the Necrolords as Matt Wagner's epic Devil's Crucible series of Grendel miniseries continues. This is gonna be out from Dark Horse. A final order cutoff is June 6th, and will be on sale on July 15th.
- 19:00Tad Eggleston: Okay, June 8th?
- 19:03Tyler Johnson: then that's incorrect, because I'm on the… I'm on the Penguin. I was reading straight from Penguin.
- 19:09Tad Eggleston: I am also reading straight from Penguin.
- 19:12Tyler Johnson: Oh, it is June 8th! Oh my god, my… I'm sorry, guys, June 8th.
- 19:19Tad Eggleston: Also, June 8th is a Monday, and June 6th is a Saturday, and final order cut-offs are on Mondays.
- 19:27Tyler Johnson: you are.
- 19:28Phil: How'd you know that so quick?
- 19:30Phil: That June 8th was a Monday.
- 19:32Tyler Johnson: All final order cut-offs are on Monday.
- 19:35Phil: Well, I know that, but he's got a calendar pulled up.
- 19:39Phil: There's cheating, there's cheating afoot.
- 19:45Tad Eggleston: Dunk punch number one from Paul Tobin, Carlos Javier Olivares with backups by Colleen Coover. In a near-future world, peculiar new compulsions have arisen to afflict individuals in bizarre ways, such as a need to paint all pigeons pink.
- 20:03Tad Eggleston: Or the unfortunate craving to tell the truth on dating apps.
- 20:08Tad Eggleston: One such individual is Clara Castanel, aka Junk Punch, who suffers an addiction to punching people square in their junk.
- 20:20Tad Eggleston: For my Eisner-winning author, Paul Tobin, and probably even more talented artist Carlos Olivares.
- 20:29Tad Eggleston: Now comes the story of one woman's quest to solve a bizarre series of thefts, such as kisses stolen from willing and waiting lips.
- 20:38Tad Eggleston: Junk Punch is entertainment with impact.
- 20:41Tad Eggleston: Final order cutoff is May 11th, in stores on June 3rd, from Mad Cave.
- 20:50Tad Eggleston: I love Paul Topin.
- 20:56Phil: Alrighty, now we've got a, graphic novel.
- 21:01Tad Eggleston: I'm kind of shocked that this isn't Tyler.
- 21:04Phil: Really? Okay. I mean, I've heard a lot of great things. This is, Billy Bat Volume 1 from, Naoki Urasawa, and Takashi Nagasaki. A highly requested title from Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki in…
- 21:23Phil: The in-demand manga Billy Bat is a historical conspiracy thriller metamanga spanning multiple millennia following a Japanese-American comic artist's search for the truth regarding the origins of his character, Billy Bat.
- 21:36Phil: This is the first thrilling volume in the sci-fi mystery by Naoki Urasawa and Takahashi Nagasaki, beautifully packaged and available for the first time in English. It's 1949, Los Angeles, and Kevin Yamagata, a Japanese-American comic book.
- 21:51Phil: comic book author is drawing his best-selling character, Billy Bat, a quick-witted detective who is, unsurprisingly, a cartoon bat. Everything is going well for Kevin until he discovers an unfortunate truth. He may have unintentionally plagiarized his beloved character from a drawing he once saw in Japan.
- 22:08Phil: Devastated by the news, Kevin returns to war-torn Japan to find the drawing's original artist.
- 22:13Phil: But the character's origins turn out to be far older and more perplexing than he had ever imagined. It's gonna have a final order cutoff of April 27th, and in stores June 3rd, from… is this…
- 22:27Tad Eggleston: Abram.
- 22:28Phil: Abrams, from Abrams.
- 22:31Tyler Johnson: Neo, are you familiar with Nioku Urasawa, Phil?
- 22:34Phil: A little bit. The name is super familiar. I… when… when pressed for, what else he's done, I would have to… I would have to quickly, quickly Google.
- 22:44Tad Eggleston: Azadora.
- 22:46Phil: Oh.
- 22:47Tad Eggleston: Century Boys.
- 22:48Phil: Okay, yes.
- 22:50Tyler Johnson: Monster.
- 22:51Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 22:52Tyler Johnson: Definitely worth checking out all of his stuff, he's very good.
- 22:57Phil: Yeah, I've read…
- 22:58Tad Eggleston: Tyler's a huge fan, which is why I was shocked that he hadn't jumped on it.
- 23:02Tyler Johnson: Well, I was mostly just kind of looking over stuff that I looked interesting that I haven't.
- 23:09Tyler Johnson: Already kind of knew about?
- 23:11Tad Eggleston: That's fair, that's fair.
- 23:14Tad Eggleston: I am super looking forward to the… the… this book from,
- 23:19Tad Eggleston: a friend of the podcast, comic book… comic strip club regular, R. Sikoriak, Declaration slash
- 23:28Tad Eggleston: Emancipation Illustrated. It is a lip book.
- 23:34Tad Eggleston: Double-sided book, R. Sikoriak revisits the Declaration of Independence on the 250th anniversary of its signing. The cartoonist who cemented his reputation as the king of the visual mashup with Masterpiece Comics and the unquotable Trump.
- 23:50Tad Eggleston: sets his sights on the documents that shaped the United States during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. A prequel of sorts to his Constitution Illustrated, Sikoriak presents the unabridged text of the Declaration of Independence alongside the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address in a double-sided book.
- 24:10Tad Eggleston: Rendered in the bright, bold, and iconic styles of over 100 different American comics, cartoons, and graphic novels from over a century. The severing of colonial ties to Great Britain and the critical turning points in American history that have followed.

- 24:48Tad Eggleston: This is from Drawn in Quarterly. Final order cutoff is May 11th.
- 24:53Tad Eggleston: The ad solicit says it's in stores July 1st.
- 24:58Tad Eggleston: The… the in-store date on the…
- 25:03Tad Eggleston: Lunar website is June 10th. I don't know if that means comic shops are getting it ahead of time. I know that July 1st is the date that Bob had given me, because it is the date that is closest to…
- 25:20Tad Eggleston: Independent… is the release date closest to Independence Day.
- 25:23Tad Eggleston: So, I don't know which is which, or if it's one of those ones where comic shops get it earlier, but no later…

- 27:26Tad Eggleston: the coolness.
- 27:28Phil: Yeah, it sounds pretty good.
- 27:30Tyler Johnson: This stuff that Magnetic Oni's been putting out, talking about formats, I've been, purchasing this stuff for my store, and it's… it's really popular.
- 27:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, Mike curates a really great line.
- 27:44Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 27:45Tad Eggleston: Really, really great line. I was happy to have him on my panel yesterday.
- 27:50Tad Eggleston: So… Phil ganking the chakin' from me.
- 27:54Phil: Yo.
- 27:55Tad Eggleston: As we go into collections.
- 27:57Phil: This is…
- 27:58Tyler Johnson: It's ganking the chicken.
- 28:00Phil: Chankin the Chankin', for sure. This is Howard Chankin's American flag omnibus.
- 28:05Phil: From its 1983 debut, American Flag was a breakout success. Emerging from a new generation of small publishers, imprints now lost to history. Award-winning narratively and graphically audacious and ridiculously influential, its impact on comic book storytelling is still being felt today.

- 29:15Phil: Yeah, I've, I've…
- 29:17Tad Eggleston: I've read it. I need to do a reread.
- 29:19Phil: Yeah, I mean, it's… yeah, I've heard it… yeah.
- 29:23Phil: What more can we say but yeah?
- 29:24Tyler Johnson: Just, yeah, just, yeah, get it! This one I've been enjoying in issues, but Lucky Devils is coming out in hardcover from Charles Sewell and Ryan Brown. It's a dark and hilarious satire about the struggles to do good in a world that makes it so easy to be bad.
- 29:42Tyler Johnson: The Lucky Devils is an examination of everything that makes humanity both grand and terrible from two of comic's most unique storytellers. The Lucky Devils is a tale of two ordinary, good-hearted, 20-something Chicagoans who begin working with the.
- 29:58Tad Eggleston: Nope!
- 30:00Tyler Johnson: who begin working with the devils on their shoulders in an attempt to fix their broken lives. It works beyond their wildest dreams, and in time, they become two of the most powerful people on Earth.
- 30:12Tyler Johnson: While they fully intend to use that influence to make the world a better place, we all know what they say about the road to hell. For fans of their previous best-selling collaborations like Curse Words and 8 Billion Genies.
- 30:25Tyler Johnson: Stories like Lucifer or The Good Place, or tales where ordinary people's lives intersect with supernatural. This new series is sure to delight readers looking for a fantastical new read. This is going to be in shops, or excuse me, final order cutoff of May 4th, and will be in shops September 16th.

- 31:18Tad Eggleston: something else.
- 31:20Tad Eggleston: Every night, it stalks his quiet town, killing, seemingly, indiscriminately.
- 31:26Tad Eggleston: When he wakes at the start of each chapter covered in blood, our story begins. The new horror story from Xander Cannon, Heck, Top 10, and Kaiju Max shows us the horrifying waking hours and terrible decisions of an unwilling part-time killer.
- 31:43Tad Eggleston: This deluxe oversized hardcover includes sketches, the pitch document, bios, diagrams, maps, variant covers, bonus illustrations, and an exclusive afterward. This is a final order cutoff of April 27th, and in stores on June 3rd. And I was talking to Xander yesterday.
- 32:02Phil: Do you…
- 32:03Tyler Johnson: Did you read this in issues, Ted?
- 32:05Tad Eggleston: Yes, I did.
- 32:06Tyler Johnson: I did too, it was really good.
- 32:08Tad Eggleston: So good. So good.
- 32:12Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 32:13Tyler Johnson: Final order cutoff, what do we got, Ted?
- 32:16Tad Eggleston: I was gonna let somebody else take it.
- 32:18Tyler Johnson: Alright, I'll do it. Final order cutoff this week, for Monday, April 6th, Charity and Sylvia, hardcover from Tilly Walden from Drawn In Quarterly.

- 32:57Tyler Johnson: Justice League Intergalactic… special.
- 33:01Tyler Johnson: That's, Jadzia Axelrod, Nicole Maines, and Travis Moore.
- 33:07Tyler Johnson: I'm not sure who's putting that one out, just kidding, it's DC. And then, mask number one. Isn't… didn't this come out already?
- 33:16Tyler Johnson: From Dan Waters in PIPAR.
- 33:19Tad Eggleston: I don't think so.
- 33:21Phil: I don't think so either.
- 33:22Tad Eggleston: It's actually in the April catalog.
- 33:25Tyler Johnson: I swear I have it on my shelf at the store.
- 33:28Phil: Huh.
- 33:28Tyler Johnson: It's based on that old cartoon, right, from the.
- 33:30Tad Eggleston: Was there a zero issue?
- 33:33Tyler Johnson: I don't know!
- 33:34Phil: That seems likely.
- 33:35Tyler Johnson: I'll, like, I'll look when I get there. Anyway…
- 33:37Tad Eggleston: Did they have a free comic book day issue that came in, and you've checked it in but not put it up?
- 33:42Tad Eggleston: I mean, there are lots of options.
- 33:43Tyler Johnson: That could be. Alright, Oracles from Olivia Sullivan, out from Avery on May 6th.

- 34:18Tad Eggleston: You wanna take the crowdfunding, Phil?
- 34:20Phil: Sure, sure, yeah, crowdfunding options. We've got, Action Philosophers, Modernity Bites from Fred Van Lenti and Ryan Dunleavy, with, Rocket Ship Entertainment on Kickstarter through April 9th.
- 34:32Phil: Junji Ito's In Old Records, a horror drama on Final. And again, that is a, audio recording of, audio dramas of Junji Ito's Horror Stories and Comics by Ryan Cady, Poppy, 0…
- 34:46Tad Eggleston: Actually, he has a story called In Old Records.
- 34:49Phil: In old records. Oh, so it's just that, it's that one in Old Records, right?
- 34:53Tad Eggleston: that.
- 34:54Phil: Gotcha. A recording of an old record. Interesting, okay. From Ryan Cady and Poppy, with 00 Enterprises on Kickstarter through April 11th. The Monster of Blackenstein, not to be confused with Blackenstein, by David F. Walker and Marcelo D. Chiara on Kickstarter through April 13th. Star Wolf, which looks like a really cool sci-fi superhero series.
- 35:18Phil: From John Coates on Kickstarter through April 18th, and then, there's Dan Dare, First Contact by Alex DeCampi and Mark Lamming with B7 Comics on Kickstarter through April 22nd. Go ahead and listen to our episode Talking to Alex a little bit before that dropped. It was a really good time.
- 35:38Phil: all kinds of good stuff that came up there.
- 35:41Phil: Business as Usual by Mark Bouchard and Shelby Criswell on Kickstarter through April 22nd. That is a, like a dark comedy, eco-punk, sort of, you know.
- 35:55Phil: a dark, a dark satirical retelling, or not retelling, but of, stuff going on in the modern world. And then this, that one is gonna be on Kickstarter through April 22nd. And then, this one we mentioned last time, Hollowed Ground from Michelle Ababinator and a whole ton of friends. I… I will…
- 36:13Phil: read them.
- 36:14Phil: Briefly, but that one, we said it was launching last week. It actually got pushed right after we were recording, so it is launching by the time you're listening to this, hopefully, on Monday, March 30th. - 37:13Phil: Stefan Franks.
- 37:15Tad Eggleston: Kamara, Steph and Frank, yeah.
- 37:16Phil: Stefan Frank's. I had to think about it, you know. The complete Palomino with Dark Planet Comics on Kickstarter, launching soon. Tad has been talking to, Stefan
- 37:31Phil: when, recommended by Howard, the aforementioned Howard Chaikin, and he's talked to him, what, 4… 4 times now?
- 37:39Tad Eggleston: Four times?
- 37:40Phil: Four times. Fourth time.
- 37:42Phil: The fourth time talking to him, go ahead and listen to that episode, talking about Palomino. If you haven't checked it out, now is the perfect time to jump on board and get the whole dang thing. Are you in a mood for Humble Bundles tab?
- 37:53Tad Eggleston: I can do the humble buzz. Super bundle of awesome stuff. $18.60 items to support the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has been extended to April 2nd. How far has Love & Rockets been extended? Somebody find out for me, because it is…
- 38:12Tad Eggleston: past March 26th.
- 38:14Phil: Also, April 2nd, it had the same amount of time remaining as.
- 38:18Tad Eggleston: Nice.
- 38:18Phil: Apologies for not updating that.
- 38:20Tad Eggleston: election from the Hernandez Brothers of Panagraphics, $18 for 57 items going to the ACLU EC Resurrection Bundle, $18 for 39 issues, also the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund through April 2nd. We've got a lot of them ending on our way April 2nd.
- 38:40Phil: It was, you know, I'll double-check the site right now, but that sounds about right.
- 38:44Tad Eggleston: No, I believe it. It happens that way sometimes.
- 38:49Tad Eggleston: But, The Art of Alex, Ross, George Perez, and more from Dynamite Entertainment. $18.35 items, another comic book legal defense fund, and also April 2nd. Not April 2nd.
- 39:04Tad Eggleston: The Best of Joe Hill at IDW, $18 for 15 items, including all of Lock & Key, for the Book Industry Charitable Foundation through April 9th. And finally, The Collected Peanuts.
- 39:18Tad Eggleston: $25 for 43 items, including every Peanuts comic strip.
- 39:25Tad Eggleston: Ever.
- 39:26Tad Eggleston: The separate volumes that have The Sundays split out.
- 39:33Tad Eggleston: which obviously are in the other ones you did, but you get to just do the Color Sundays if you want. It's got some of the theme collections, which again, you know, so it's not only the… all of the volumes of the complete peanuts, it's got, like, any of the other phantographic stuff
- 39:51Tad Eggleston: This is… this is a gem of a…
- 39:55Tad Eggleston: A gem of a $25 purchase if you like peanuts at all.
- 39:59Tad Eggleston: 25 items… $25.43 items for canine companions through April 19th.
- 40:09Tad Eggleston: So… did we… oh no, that's next, okay.
- 40:13Tad Eggleston: Time for 3 amazing books. I'm gonna make a confession.
- 40:17Tad Eggleston: Even though I still put 3 amazing books up.
- 40:22Tad Eggleston: One of them I have not read yet, because I have only read two books.
- 40:26Tyler Johnson: You didn't read any of them.
- 40:28Phil: Okay.
- 40:28Tad Eggleston: I have only read 2 books.
- 40:30Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 40:30Tad Eggleston: And I will give you the hint that the one I haven't read Is not the last one.
- 40:38Phil: That's not hate me.
- 40:39Tyler Johnson: That's funny. Alright, I'm gonna guess.
- 40:42Tyler Johnson: number 2.
- 40:43Phil: Yes, Sam.
- 40:44Tyler Johnson: Because…
- 40:46Tyler Johnson: Now, let me, let me just go with here, because we talked about last time, the fun, if Dave could make it, is tad okay, right? Instead of…
- 40:57Phil: outrated.
- 40:58Tyler Johnson: Is Ted okay? So I think you're gonna read that. Plus, it's.
- 41:01Tad Eggleston: That was my first read of the week.
- 41:03Phil: And I…
- 41:03Tyler Johnson: I think, I think Is TedOkay is amazing, so… Yes, it is. Yeah.
- 41:08Tad Eggleston: first read of the week.
- 41:10Tyler Johnson: So there we go, you already told us it's not number 3.
- 41:13Tad Eggleston: No.
- 41:13Phil: Anniversary.
- 41:14Tad Eggleston: And I heard…
- 41:14Phil: sit down.
- 41:15Tad Eggleston: Condon before I read Absolute Martian Manhunter.
- 41:18Phil: Is your top of the content.
- 41:19Tad Eggleston: as much as I love Brutal Dark, I feel relatively confident that I'm still gonna have Martian Manhunter as my second pick. What I feel worse about is that, like, I think Miss Truesdale could have slid in, I think Farrell could have slid in.
- 41:35Phil: I heard this issue of Farrell was a really big one.
- 41:37Tad Eggleston: you know, I think Carmen Redclaw could have slid in. Absolute Wonder Woman can always slide in.
- 41:44Tad Eggleston: New Space Age could have slid in. Just Brutal was great, like, it was… it was on the… the…
- 41:54Tad Eggleston: books I knew was spectacular last week, because I'd read it already, but, like, if I'd taken time to consider, you know, there's an argument for sliding it in, even based on the books that I have read. Minor Arcana, and I'm really actually looking forward to Raphael Garcia Henchman, which…
- 42:12Tyler Johnson: It's cool.
- 42:13Tad Eggleston: To begin with, but is already getting… rave reviews as well.
- 42:18Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I will say, as far as, like, a… like, kind of a breakout hit of the week, that's the one that I would… I would pick.
- 42:24Tad Eggleston: Right. But… but I had 10 podcasts between…
- 42:30Phil: Wow.
- 42:31Tad Eggleston: Thursday the… 19th? And… and… Wednesday the 25th.
- 42:40Tad Eggleston: And now I'm at C2E2, and during that whole time, I was also preparing for the four panels that I have at C2E2. So, like… oh, and there was an in-store signing at Modern Age on… on Thursday. So, like, I've had…
- 42:57Tad Eggleston: Significant comics-related things Every day since…
- 43:02Tad Eggleston: the 19th, and still do for 2 more days, so…
- 43:08Tad Eggleston: the… the significant comic-related things wound up not including reading comics, which is really a shame, because I got,
- 43:16Tad Eggleston: a copy of Pumpkinheads from Dave Baker and Nicole Goo yesterday, ahead of time.
- 43:21Tad Eggleston: I really would have liked to read that and brag about it, but instead, I fell asleep.
- 43:27Tyler Johnson: Which is…
- 43:27Phil: I mean… How dare you?
- 43:30Tyler Johnson: Just as braggable, honestly.
- 43:33Tyler Johnson: In a cup.
- 43:33Phil: accomplishment, if there ever was one.
- 43:37Tyler Johnson: Hey, before we move on,
- 43:40Tyler Johnson: So, I have to roll in about 15 minutes, so should I just say goodbye when I…
- 43:48Tad Eggleston: I think we'll get there.
- 43:50Tyler Johnson: Are you thinking? Yeah, we can.
- 43:51Phil: We can… we can go quick. I think we'll get there. I don't have much.
- 43:54Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 43:55Phil: Yeah.
- 43:57Tad Eggleston: Take a walk, Phil.
- 43:58Phil: There we go! Alright, yeah, I did not read as much Blue Period this week, but it still has me thinking a lot about the nature of art, you know, what makes something
- 44:08Phil: art, you know, capital A, big, big, big thoughts, but I'm also eyeing what series I should read next, you know, I'm actually, I'm leaning pretty hard towards Chainsaw Man. I feel like there was one other thing that I had my eye on, but… but it's hard to ignore the Chainsaw Man that's looming large. And of course, I've,
- 44:26Phil: got through rewatching Evangelion in a massive… it just… it…
- 44:31Phil: holy shit, that series… I mean, I know it's an anime, there is a manga adaptation, but holy shit, it's just… it remains legendary. And yeah, again, has just…
- 44:42Phil: Big thoughts on the mind. Not gonna get into them now so that, so that, you know, we can get Tyler out the door on time. But, I only managed to read it for our, for our One Piece race, I only managed to read a whole six… six chapters of Blue Period. I will say that to… to get, to get Tad un… un waylaid, unfurloughed.
- 44:58Phil: Furloughed is not the right word, but I don't know why it jumped into mind. Tyler, you've gotta start secretly reading One Piece until you're, like, 100 chapters ahead, and then wait
- 45:08Phil: You announce it, and it lights up.
- 45:09Tad Eggleston: So I would say, like, I really wanted to become unbecombed.
- 45:15Phil: Yeah.
- 45:16Tad Eggleston: Last week, when they announced that the new mascot.
- 45:20Phil: Oh, yeah!
- 45:21Tad Eggleston: for the… for Doctors Without Borders.
- 45:23Phil: raised!
- 45:24Tad Eggleston: is Chopper.
- 45:25Phil: I saw that. I saw that headline. So yeah, so I mean, that's, you know, that's a flag.
- 45:30Tad Eggleston: That's.
- 45:30Phil: bag of waving.
- 45:31Phil: You know.
- 45:32Tad Eggleston: So… but… but not this week.
- 45:36Phil: Yeah, no, you had a lot going on. 10 podcasts, that's, that's a…
- 45:40Tad Eggleston: Well, and, and four panels.
- 45:43Phil: Right, that is the bigger one.
- 45:45Tad Eggleston: So moving to great responsibility, it's more, I still have C2E2 prep, and it should be C2E2… what did I put up top? Somebody remember.
- 45:58Tad Eggleston: Or am I gonna have to scan myself? Underway. C2E2 is underway. I hosted my first ever panel yesterday. It went really well. Nice.
- 46:10Tad Eggleston: we overstayed our time, but not enough that anybody started yelling at me. Perfect. I think I did a good job of managing the time, and then starting to shoo people out of the room when it was time to, as the conversation spilled into the hallway.
- 46:27Tad Eggleston: My, my, my huge thanks for… to Spike Trotman, who… who…
- 46:34Tad Eggleston: She did almost comics-related stand-up at the beginning as people were coming in. That's awesome. And it really kind of broke the ice for me, that she was cracking jokes before we even started.
- 46:46Phil: That's cool.
- 46:47Phil: And that's a sign of a great panel that the conversation kept going in the hall afterwards, you know, that's a… Right.
- 46:52Tad Eggleston: So, so…
- 46:53Phil: It's really good.
- 46:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, it was… it was a fun panel. It was… it was Spike Trotman and…
- 46:59Tad Eggleston: Mike Kennedy, the publishers of Iron Circus and Magnetic.
- 47:05Tad Eggleston: Respectively, and then Patrick Brower from Challengers Comics and Conversation, and…
- 47:13Tad Eggleston: Dr. Edgar Ramos from Modern Age Comics, talking about, you know, selling comics.
- 47:20Tad Eggleston: connecting readers with books. It was, it was a fun time. 2 today, I get to talk to Jeffrey Brown and…
- 47:29Tad Eggleston: Lucy Knisely is my first panel, talking about going from being indie darlings to… to… best-selling… YA?
- 47:40Tad Eggleston: Writers.
- 47:41Tad Eggleston: and artists. And then I have my indie comics panel.
- 47:46Tad Eggleston: later, which is, Terry Moore.
- 47:50Tad Eggleston: Spike Trotman again, Greg from Santos Sisters,
- 47:59Tad Eggleston: Larry Stahl and Daria Faruhar, so… so all of them have been guests on 22 panels, friends of ours, nice gamut of, like… Terry's been at it for, like, 40 years, Spike's been at it for, like, 30 years, Greg's been at it for 20 years, and combined, Daria and…
- 48:19Tyler Johnson: Larry is brand new.
- 48:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it was… I said, Terry…
- 48:24Tyler Johnson: Oh, okay.
- 48:26Tad Eggleston: Barry has been at it 40 years.
- 48:28Tyler Johnson: I thought you said Larry… I thought you were talking about Larry Stahl?
- 48:32Tad Eggleston: No, no, and then Larry and Daria combined have been at it for, like, 3 years.
- 48:38Tad Eggleston: 4 years. Yeah.
- 48:40Tyler Johnson: So, speaking of Larry Stahl, his leprechaun story in that Leprechaun,
- 48:46Tyler Johnson: Book of Stories was really good last week.
- 48:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Eric is here too, the artist on that. They'll both be with me for Cool People Talking About Comics tomorrow. Great. So yeah, one panel down, three to go. I feel more like a pro, because I really just spent my day yesterday, rather than shopping or standing in many lines, just like…
- 49:08Tad Eggleston: doing quick hits on people I knew, or people that I… I knew well enough that I could kind of slide in and invite them to cool people talking about comics on Sunday, and… and then…
- 49:20Tad Eggleston: So, you know, that was kind of cool. And the nerves were… manageable.
- 49:27Tyler Johnson: Good.
- 49:28Tad Eggleston: That's great. And still, still manageable now. So, that's C2E2 underway, and we'll have a bigger breakdown next week. Do you guys have any questions, anything to add?
- 49:44Phil: I just wanted to say, I know it says feel more like a pro, I want to say you're already a pro. You're already there, you know? Yeah.
- 49:51Tad Eggleston: But, I mean, we are definitely the business that has the most Feelings of imposter syndrome, of…
- 49:58Phil: That's fair.
- 49:59Phil: That's right.
- 50:00Tad Eggleston: Almost any business. And that's, that's…
- 50:02Phil: That's one of the reasons why, you know, my wife is in school for graphic design, you know, the artist's journey is up and down some imposter syndrome, and all the time I have to tell her, like, honey, you're already great, you're already great, you're already great.
- 50:17Phil: And so I want to be able to tell that to you too, Tad, that you're already a pro, you're already great.
- 50:21Tyler Johnson: Already great, Ted.
- 50:22Phil: Yeah, you know, you're… The 800 episodes of… of podcasts do not happen by accident, or…
- 50:32Phil: By that point, you are pro.
- 50:34Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 50:35Tad Eggleston: Yeah, though I did read a disturbing thing. Somebody ran through all the numbers and whatnot that, like.
- 50:42Tad Eggleston: 80% of all… all comic artists?
- 50:46Tad Eggleston: or all comics creators, make 36 grand or less a year. So, like, I'm a pro in an industry where part of the reason why nobody feels like they're pros is that it's not really even a living, much less.
- 51:04Phil: Yeah.
- 51:07Tad Eggleston: So, we'll find out.
- 51:09Phil: Yeah.
- 51:10Tad Eggleston: We'll find out. But, yeah, I mean, it's fun.
- 51:15Tad Eggleston: It's fun. I have had a good time this weekend.
- 51:20Phil: Nice. I'm glad it's going well so far.
- 51:23Tad Eggleston: Some books we hope will be spectacular. Well, there's the one that should have been my birthday present.
- 51:28Tad Eggleston: And they actually had here yesterday, but there was a line, and I wasn't standing.
- 51:34Phil: beginning in.
- 51:34Tad Eggleston: Daredevil number one from Stephanie Phillips and Lee Garbott at Marvel. I'm also seriously looking forward to Bizarro Year None, number one, from Kevin Smith, Eric Carrasco, and Nick Bertara at DC.
- 51:48Tad Eggleston: And, briar Knight's Tear, number 4.
- 51:53Tad Eggleston: Christopher Cantwell and Alex Linz wrap up their series. I've been loving it since Issue 1, so I can't wait to see how it all wraps up.
- 52:05Tad Eggleston: So… Phil?
- 52:07Phil: Yeah, I actually had, there were too many exciting
- 52:13Phil: exciting trades this week to just pick one, so I actually picked three out. First up, there is the enticingly titled, He Rolled Me Up Like a Grilled Squid by Sugi Yoshiharu from Drawn and Quarterly. That book looks fantastic. I am gonna have to read it for the Grilled Squid alone. And then, because we had read the previous one recently, Uri…
- 52:35Phil: Tupka and the Gods, another story from Lands Unknown by Mike Mignol and Dave Stewart over at Dark Horse. You know, very excited to see the Lands Unknown further explored. And then, you know, I don't usually highlight superhero stuff, but I heard Batman Dark Patterns, by Dan Waters and Hayden Sherman described as quite possibly one of the best
- 52:57Phil: collections of Batman stories ever, so I'm gonna have to sit down and read that one at some point.
- 53:03Tyler Johnson: It was…
- 53:04Phil: deemed an all-timer.
- 53:05Tyler Johnson: I will put it up there as one of the greats. I don't know about THE best, they did a really great job. Reading it in issues was fun, and now that I have the trade, I'm excited to read it that way as well.
- 53:19Tyler Johnson: Sure.
- 53:23Tyler Johnson: Yes, it was good.
- 53:25Phil: Yeah.
- 53:28Tyler Johnson: Alright guys, this is… this is the end of the show. I've got 4 minutes. Does anybody want to, waste these 4 minutes just chit-chatting?
- 53:37Phil: No, I think.
- 53:37Tad Eggleston: You should take us out.
- 53:38Tyler Johnson: Alright guys, thank you for getting me out on time, and we will catch you after the next page. See ya!
- 53:58Tyler Johnson: Oh my god, just stop already!
