- 0:37Right. This next guest is going to be a
- 0:40hoop. He better not disappoint just
- 0:41because we're recording, because I met today's today this guest
- 0:46and he had me cracking up. Introduce yourself, my friend.
- 0:49How y'all doing? My name is Malik.
- 0:51I'm throws coach. I'm.
- 0:52Air military. Institute in Marion AL.
- 0:56And you? Told.
- 0:58You threatened me this morning that you wanted to beat my butt
- 1:00in important. I.
- 1:02Said. We play together, you know.
- 1:05As one, you know, you know, Congress, I'm gonna get some.
- 1:07You gotta get that XP. You know, I gotta gotta, you
- 1:10know, I paid a lot of money for that Battle pass, you know, I
- 1:12gotta give my $13 worth, you know?
- 1:14You know, so Malik, tell me this is your first year at the
- 1:17convention. Tell me you're smart guy.
- 1:20You know the schedule's long, right?
- 1:23You had to have circled some things, one or two things.
- 1:25And you're like there's no way I'm missing this.
- 1:27What were some of those things are not missed for you this?
- 1:29Week it's actually going to be. I think it's wrong.
- 1:31The last event is by coach Taylor, OK BYU doing with mental
- 1:36health. You know what definitely got me
- 1:38was that I listened to the interview that y'all did and you
- 1:41know, learned about her story and just like and I feel like
- 1:44that is going to be a great one Just because if I can get that
- 1:47information now as a young coach, yeah, I can have that.
- 1:50And then she can possibly say some things that can help me
- 1:53help my stupid athletes as well. You.
- 1:55Know right way not to put yourself in a box there, so.
- 1:59You hit the nail on the head there.
- 2:00Maybe it's maybe it's some generalization that, you know,
- 2:02younger coaches don't think about mental health until later
- 2:04in their career. They think about the X's and O's
- 2:06and the techniques and networking, things like that.
- 2:09And also as a throws coach, you're going to go listen to a
- 2:12distance coach. I'm just like, you know, kind of
- 2:14generalization here, but like, I'm going to listen to Don
- 2:16Babbitt or whoever orphan is. But a distance coach, what is
- 2:20she going to talk to me about? It's really good man.
- 2:22And you know, I also I'm going to dig range everything you know
- 2:26I want to. Be versatile.
- 2:28Because you know, as you know, when we interview Coach
- 2:30Valentine, we start a program. You never know when I might have
- 2:34to coach a jumper, you know? So instead of saying, oh, you
- 2:39know what I mean? You know I can't, they can't say
- 2:42coach, you show. I can't show it to them.
- 2:44Right, right. You know.
- 2:45So I gotta have my information down pat.
- 2:47You know I'm not. You know, I'm not already, you
- 2:49know, So from trying to live with my kids, you know, show
- 2:52them I still got a little bit, you know?
- 2:54You you're, you know, as a young coach, you're a little wise
- 2:57beyond your years, my friend. What's awesome is that layer.
- 3:00So that will continue on. That's really good.
- 3:03But we're gonna see how wise you are.
- 3:04I've got 100 random questions here.
- 3:07It's one through 100. You get to pick the number.
- 3:09Alright 64. Alright, what's the significance
- 3:11of 60? 4 which is my random football.
- 3:14Number Alright man, let's talk about pets.
- 3:16Pet Peeves What's your biggest pet peeve in life?
- 3:21It's tough. Because you have so many, you're
- 3:24like, how do I narrow it down to just the?
- 3:26Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:27Yeah, exactly. I don't know.
- 3:33What's something that. Yeah, I'm a Family Guy guy,
- 3:35right? So here's the other thing.
- 3:37This grinds my gear. What grinds your gear?
- 3:39Yeah, yeah, what? Grinds my.
- 3:40Is it people that ask you a question and just won't shut up
- 3:42and just keep making you ask the question?
- 3:44You know what? What my face I don't like when
- 3:49people assume I'm angry. When I is, you know, like James
- 3:52Harrison, the football player for the studio.
- 3:54You always look. Mean.
- 3:55Sure. Everybody.
- 3:57You're right. Yeah, like, do you know I'm
- 4:00listening. Look, I'm listening to some Katy
- 4:01Perry right now in my head. All right, Look, you know what
- 4:04I'm saying? Like, I'm listening to some
- 4:05music, but you know, on outside I might just be, you know, you
- 4:09know, so that's that's definitely because I get it a
- 4:12lot. Yeah, that's that's an
- 4:13interesting thing there. You know, something I've worked
- 4:15on not judging. So that's a judging, right?
- 4:17It's like, oh, here's this guy's big.
- 4:19You know, whatever all the things that go with that, it's
- 4:22I'm trying to do even better. It's like, hey, man, until that
- 4:25person proves to me that they're a bad person or angry.
- 4:27Exactly. They're human.
- 4:29You know, by the way, you are human.
- 4:30You're allowed to be angry. Exactly.
- 4:31Exactly, you know. And that's why I think that's a
- 4:33good thing about Chuck. You know it's a lot of different
- 4:37different people, different places.
- 4:38I mean everybody dressing different you know and you know
- 4:41it's I definitely, when I just found fully decided I wanted to
- 4:45go coach and I was like the only way I would be somewhere thing
- 4:48except me for me. You know I got.
- 4:50The Pierce when I got the locks, the nose rings, tattoos, you
- 4:53know, you know. You know, I that's the country
- 4:56accent. You know, I say how y'all doing
- 4:57a lot you know you know something like that you know.
- 4:59So I gotta you know if that's that's definitely, you know when
- 5:04I said OK this is the right thing for me.
- 5:05You know, this is the right career choice for me.
- 5:07That that's important. You know, we talk about when we
- 5:10recruit athletes to finding the right fit.
- 5:12Well, it's also important for the coach to find the right fit
- 5:15in a university or high school setting that they're going to
- 5:18accept you for who you are because again, you're an
- 5:19individual unique person. So unless you want to change.
- 5:23Yeah. I feel like that's how success
- 5:27is built and you know, of course it can be, you know, training
- 5:30and all that stuff. But I feel like it's one of
- 5:33those things where there's somebody in your life you're
- 5:35going to go above and beyond for just because of what y'all went
- 5:38through or something like that. And I feel like once you get to
- 5:41that relationship with a stupid athlete, that's when you you
- 5:45know that's when they I didn't. I wasn't expecting that, you
- 5:48know, that's when I say I have to do this, you know, and and
- 5:51that's that's how it was for me. With coaching me and then I had
- 5:55coach mathologists, you know, they definitely I wasn't the
- 5:57best student athlete. You know, I wasn't the best
- 5:59student. But you know, they gave me time
- 6:01to actually get right. You know, they do everything I
- 6:04need to do and that definitely helped me like I mean a lot.
- 6:07So that's why I'm I'm happy with developing athletes, you know,
- 6:10you know, because development is key, you know, that's going to
- 6:12go on way after they, you know, some of these kids.
- 6:16I saw a Gpa's. I'm like, hey, I've never
- 6:18touched that, you know, so you know, this might be a lawyer,
- 6:20doctor, so they would have those type of skills, you know, you
- 6:23know, so. Well, it's going to be real fun
- 6:25to watch your development, man, yeah.
- 6:27You're still? So early you're barely at the
- 6:29starting line. Of a.
- 6:31It's really interesting. It's going to be a great
- 6:33journey. I just.
- 6:34Know. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:34I'm definitely excited. I'm definitely excited.
- 6:36Let's get our selfie in here, man.
- 6:37I appreciate you very much for being here on the podcast,
- 6:40trusting me here with the live recording.
- 6:43Fortnite we go. Fortnite.
- 6:44Somehow, someway, we get it done.
- 6:46Appreciate you, man. I really appreciate you man.
- 6:47I have a good. Day.
- 6:50You know, I literally met Malik this morning.
- 6:53Down, actually, kind of afternoon.
- 6:54We're up for lunch down in the lobby and just what a great
- 6:57character, what a great, just bubbly person.
