- 0:01Acts chapter 12, let us pray. Our Lord God Almighty who reigns
- 0:09on high, we love you. Yes, Jesus, we love you so much.
- 0:14We exalt your holy name over all of our circumstances, all of our
- 0:19emotions, over our families, over our workplaces, over this
- 0:23world, God, over all governments.
- 0:26Father, I pray in the name of Jesus that you will reign
- 0:30supreme and that you will go in and take back enemy territory.
- 0:37God, help us to be your hands and feet today as we armor up
- 0:41today. Lord, by faith I put on the belt
- 0:48of truth, or I stand on the truth, and I tell the truth, and
- 0:54you are the truth. You are the life and you are the
- 0:58way, King Jesus. So I put you on today.
- 1:03I refuse to live in a lie today, King Jesus, I refuse to lie
- 1:09today. I will tell the truth about
- 1:13everything. I will not hide in shame because
- 1:17I know that it is in my weakness that you were made strong.
- 1:22By faith I put on this breastplate of righteousness.
- 1:29God, protect my heart from the fiery darts of the enemy that
- 1:34keep coming relentlessly at me. God, by faith, as I put on this
- 1:41breastplate of righteousness, I will live the right way.
- 1:46Lord, the right way that you have marked out clearly in your
- 1:50word. Lord, I will live righteously
- 1:55because of the righteousness that you have given me.
- 1:58And Lord, that is by not wronging others, by not
- 2:02gossiping and slandering and murdering with my tongue, God, I
- 2:06will live the right way and stand on truth.
- 2:09Lord, by faith, help me to put on these gospel shoes of peace
- 2:14today. Lord, as I slide these gospel
- 2:18shoes of peace today, I'm reminded of the Paracletus.
- 2:24Lord, as I put these pair of cleats on, Lord, I am reminded
- 2:29of my ability to stand firm in the faith.
- 2:34Lord, I am reminded that it is the good news of Jesus Christ
- 2:38that brings our peace. So as I stand on truth and I
- 2:42live the right way, I will experience the peace that you've
- 2:47promised me. God, as I run the race and take
- 2:51the whole word to the whole world, advancing into enemy
- 2:56territory with lightning speed in a way that the opposition
- 3:01cannot even comprehend, as those that they thought that the enemy
- 3:07thought was theirs. Lord, we're bringing them out of
- 3:11death and into life today in the same way that you did for us.
- 3:16And Lord, by faith, I put on the helmet of salvation today.
- 3:22I guard my mind by reminding myself of how far I've come.
- 3:29Lord, I remind myself with this salvation story, my testimony.
- 3:36God, I overcome the enemy by the blood of the Lamb in the words
- 3:41of my testimony. So as I remind myself of my
- 3:45salvation story, Lord, help me to be found sharing that with
- 3:50others and edifying and building others up with the story that is
- 3:57unique to me. God, as you took me from death
- 4:05and disease and decay and my sinful lifestyle and we had a
- 4:10divine encounter, Lord, and you reached your hand down into the
- 4:18pit of the muck and the mire. And Lord by faith, I grabbed
- 4:23hold of it and you pulled me up into heavenly places and sat me
- 4:28with you. So God, I'm reminded of that and
- 4:31I will share that with someone today, with everyone that I meet
- 4:35today. And Lord, by faith, I lift up
- 4:40this heavy soaked shield over my head, over my mind, over my
- 4:52body, God and I extinguish the fiery darts of the enemy.
- 4:58I increase the faith in my life. God believing that you can do
- 5:04anything. There is nothing in this world
- 5:10that is unreachable to you. You created it, and it is the
- 5:16fabric of your breath as you spoke it all into existence.
- 5:22And you can unlock chains and you can cause us to walk through
- 5:29gates that are opened for us. Lord, you can open doors that no
- 5:33man can shut and shut doors that no man can open.
- 5:38Lord, you can bring dead people back to life.
- 5:41You can cure stage 4 cancer Lord, you can reverse diabetes,
- 5:47God, you can do anything. So Lord, by faith, I lift that
- 5:54shield of faith up, and by faith I wield the sword, the word of
- 6:01God, and the spirit in my hand. Father, I pray, Lord, as I wield
- 6:08this double edged sword, that I will be able to rightly divide
- 6:13the word today as we sit in your presence and as we soak up what
- 6:19it is that you want to say to us today.
- 6:22I pray, Holy Spirit, that you will guide us and teach us.
- 6:26Give us discernment for this hour, for such a time as this.
- 6:30We love you God, we thank you God, we enter your courts with
- 6:34praise and Thanksgiving. We worship you in spirit and
- 6:38truth. Come, Lord, come.
- 6:43It's in Jesus Christ, holy and precious name that I pray.
- 6:47Amen. Let's start in verse one.
- 6:55Now about that time, Herod the King stretched forth his hands
- 7:01to vex certain of the church. So what you need to understand
- 7:06here, friends, is that this Herod was an evil man, and there
- 7:13was really no other reason for this vexing of the church other
- 7:19than a political power play. And that's what you're going to
- 7:21find as time goes on and the world becomes more and more
- 7:26estranged from the judeo-christian values.
- 7:31What you're going to find is that these political leaders are
- 7:35going to try to get their popularity up by persecuting
- 7:40those who stand for good. And woe to those who call evil
- 7:44good and good evil. And you see it shaping up in our
- 7:48day and our hour. And far be it from us to be the
- 7:52ones to ever embark on this persecution.
- 8:00Far be it from us to ever be the ones to be hateful towards any
- 8:05group. We pray on our knees, we fight
- 8:09on our knees, we pray against the principalities and the
- 8:12powers of darkness. Friends, we do not fight against
- 8:18God's image, people that are made in His image.
- 8:21We fight against all of the demonic hosts that are behind
- 8:25all of these regimes. That's what you need to
- 8:28understand. Is there so much going on in the
- 8:33spiritual realm that it we need to have eyes to be able to see
- 8:38what's actually happening? That people are delusional and
- 8:41blindfolded. And we were once those people
- 8:45until God came in and by faith he removed the blindfold and
- 8:50unstopped our ears and gave us the ability to see the world all
- 8:55around us the way that He does. Look up and see that there are
- 9:00more of us than there are of them.
- 9:02Don't forget it. Two.
- 9:08And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
- 9:12So this is by tradition the first apostle martyr.
- 9:22And we know that the soldier who was in charge of James saw the
- 9:27witness of James as he went to his death in this soldier who
- 9:33was given charge to guard him. By tradition, early church says
- 9:39that this guard professed the Lord Jesus Christ because of
- 9:45James. And he was also killed at the
- 9:48same day, same hour, same way. And so isn't that amazing that
- 9:53this first apostle martyr at the end of his life was still doing
- 10:00the Lord's work? And we need to understand that
- 10:03God's ways are not our ways. And we would say, well, how come
- 10:07you didn't save him? How come you could have saved
- 10:09him? But why didn't you?
- 10:11And God was glorified in the highest by James spilling out
- 10:18his blood to spread the good news of Jesus Christ even
- 10:23further. And we're still talking about it
- 10:262000 years later. Praise God, Hallelujah.
- 10:30And we need to know that if you want to be greatest in the
- 10:33Kingdom of God, it is by this martyrdom, friends.
- 10:39And Jesus even told James and John when they were wanting to
- 10:43sit at his right and sit on his left, he says, are you able to
- 10:46drink from the cup? They said we are.
- 10:49And here you see, James had to swallow his words here and live
- 10:55up to what he told the Lord Jesus.
- 10:57He could do three. And because he saw it pleased
- 11:06the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also.
- 11:11Then were the Days of Unleavened bread.
- 11:14So here we he saw that his popularity started to rise, his
- 11:18numbers were starting to increase, and he thought, well,
- 11:24I'll take another one of these apostles.
- 11:27So he takes Peter and he's trying to use Peter as a
- 11:34political power play in his little Playhouse.
- 11:39But let's see what God thinks about it for.
- 11:43And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison and
- 11:47delivered him to 4 quaternions of soldiers to keep him,
- 11:52intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.
- 11:58So imagine that friends, just think about this scene.
- 12:02There's 16 guards that are given to this apostle and there would
- 12:10be round clock surveillance and round the clock guard on Peter
- 12:18to chain to them to watching and that would happen throughout the
- 12:2324 hour block. And here you notice this
- 12:28interesting mention of Easter. We have seen these mentions to
- 12:33Passover, but now we see this word Easter and you need to know
- 12:38that Easter is from the Pagan goddess Asherah.
- 12:45And we need to know that we celebrate the resurrection of
- 12:48the Lord Jesus Christ and Easter is a Pagan idea of fertility.
- 12:57And we need to know that Jesus Christ is resurrected and teach
- 13:02that to your kids. We do not worship the Easter
- 13:05Bunny or eggs, we worship arisen Lord Jesus Christ.
- 13:11We've got to get out of the traditions, these man made
- 13:14traditions that are actually pointing us to cultic Pagan
- 13:18practices. It's not about the Easter Bunny
- 13:21and it's not about Santa Claus. It's all about the risen Lord
- 13:25King Jesus on his throne, ruling and reigning.
- 13:28Let's not be duped. Don't lie to your kids about all
- 13:32these little fairy tale things because if you lie to them about
- 13:36that, you're going to lie to them about Jesus and they will
- 13:39not trust you. And it is a scheme of the enemy.
- 13:42Don't forget it. Five, Peter therefore was kept
- 13:51in prison, but prayer was made without ceasing of the church
- 13:56unto God for him. That is what we're told to do in
- 14:00First Thessalonians 517, to pray without ceasing.
- 14:04That is the call on your life. You're called into full time
- 14:08discipleship and that is it. Pray without ceasing.
- 14:12That is the mark. That is the call.
- 14:14That is what we are supposed to be doing.
- 14:17And that is what you see the early church doing as as Peter
- 14:22is apprehended and as they're waiting for a political power
- 14:26play to put him to death in front of everybody to get their
- 14:30notoriety and to get their campaign numbers up.
- 14:34What a bunch of hoopla and garbage.
- 14:37You can see all of these futile men operating in their own
- 14:42understanding and they do not have divine counsel.
- 14:46Let's see what God says about it. 6 And when Herod would have
- 14:52brought him forth, the same night, Peter was sleeping
- 14:56between two soldiers bound with two chains, and the keepers
- 15:01before the door kept the prison. So there's that quaternion,
- 15:06there's this four soldiers, 2 chained to him, two guarding the
- 15:09door. And you can see that this was
- 15:13right before Herod is about to put him to death.
- 15:17So a lot of times you need to understand that God plays
- 15:19spiritual chicken with us. We will be on the cusp of the
- 15:26miraculous, on the cusp of the greatest blessing of our lives.
- 15:31But so many times we self destruct.
- 15:33And you can see here, Peter by faith was sleeping like a little
- 15:38baby. He wasn't worried, he wasn't
- 15:41frightful, he was at peace and at rest.
- 15:45What a word for us. What a call to us.
- 15:48In the greatest hour of our life, when our lives are about
- 15:52to be demanded from us, do we shrink back?
- 15:56Are we cowards and do we try to save our skin?
- 16:00Are we angry with God and offended?
- 16:03Or do we charge the hill by faith, believing that what is
- 16:08next is far better than anything that we've ever experienced in
- 16:14this little lifetime that God has given us, and it's all about
- 16:18getting it right. And every day you take a test
- 16:23and the answer key is Jesus. Jesus.
- 16:25And Jesus, He's the only one that's going to get us home.
- 16:29Friends, we are pilgrims in a strange land here.
- 16:34This is not our home, we're not of this world. 7 And behold, the
- 16:47Angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shone in the prison,
- 16:52and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, arise
- 16:58up quickly, and his chains fell off from his hands.
- 17:02Listen, the material in the physical is nothing for God.
- 17:08Don't forget it. He can cause stage 4 cancer to
- 17:11dissolve in a moment's notice. He can cause your broke down
- 17:19vehicle with no tread on the tires to stay running and safe
- 17:27as you travel up these missionary roads.
- 17:31He can cause angels to come and guide little teenage girls in a
- 17:37foreign land full of hostile criminals back home.
- 17:44I've seen it in my day. I've seen it with my eyes.
- 17:49God can do anything. We do not need to doubt him.
- 17:53We do not need to doubt what God can do.
- 17:56God can do anything. And he's still doing the
- 17:59miraculous today. 8 And the Angel said unto him, Gird
- 18:07yourself up and bind on your sandals.
- 18:10And so he did. And he said unto him, Cast your
- 18:14garment about you. Follow me.
- 18:16So imagine these this scene. 2 Guards chained to Peter. 2
- 18:21guards guarding the door. A light shines in the prison.
- 18:25The Angel is poking Peter, waking him up because he's
- 18:29sleeping so soundly. The Angel is talking with Peter
- 18:33and telling him to put on his clothes and his shoes.
- 18:36The chains have fallen off of him.
- 18:39He tells him to follow him and the guards never wake.
- 18:44You know God can cause a valley of dry bones to live again.
- 18:48God can cause 185 a 185,000 Assyrians to die in one night.
- 19:02God can cause quail and manna to fall from heaven.
- 19:06God can cause a sea to part in us to walk across on dry land.
- 19:13God can cause people, thousands of people to be fed by a couple
- 19:21fish and some few loaves. Listen, he's limitless.
- 19:29He has the cattle on 1000 hills. He never runs out of resources.
- 19:38There's no lack in the Father's house.
- 19:40Are you connected to the Father? Or are you still grasping at
- 19:46straws and leaning on your own understanding of how this world
- 19:51is going to work? All that's going to do is lead
- 19:54to frustration. I can assure you that you cannot
- 19:59serve 2 masters. You will love 1 and you will
- 20:02hate the other. We cannot serve both God and
- 20:05Mammon, friends. And the reality of the situation
- 20:09is so many people are worshipping this world, the
- 20:13systems of this world. They're leaning on their own
- 20:16understanding and they are not. In tune with the miraculous that
- 20:21God has available to them, let's step out of the boat.
- 20:25Let's walk on the water today, friends, believing that God can
- 20:30do anything. 9 And he went out and followed him, and wish not
- 20:44that it was true, which was done by the Angel, but thought he saw
- 20:49a vision. He didn't realize that all this
- 20:51was actually happening. He thought he was just living it
- 20:54out in a dream and a vision. 10 When they were past the 1st and
- 21:022nd Ward, they came unto the iron gate that led into the
- 21:08city, which opened to them of his own accord, and they went
- 21:14out and passed on through one street and forth with the Angel
- 21:18departed from him. So imagine this whole scene.
- 21:21The Angel speaks to him, tells him to get up, pokes him, put on
- 21:26your clothes, put on your shoes. He leads him past all of the
- 21:30guards as if it's nothing, leads him all the way to an iron gate
- 21:35that is shut, which would have been impenetrable.
- 21:39And then the gate automatically opens up.
- 21:43Peter walks right outside of the city.
- 21:47He comes to the street, and then all of a sudden, the Angel
- 21:51doesn't even bid him goodbye. He just disappears because his
- 21:56work was done. And let's see what Peter has to
- 21:59say when he comes to his senses. 11 And when Peter was come to
- 22:07himself, he said, Now I know of a surety that the Lord has sent
- 22:11his Angel, and has delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and
- 22:15from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.
- 22:18So we know that Peter's going to go on to write a couple of the
- 22:23epistles, first Peter and second Peter, which is going to give us
- 22:26a lot of our eschatology friends.
- 22:29And God had great plans for the ages through Peter, and you can
- 22:34see here that he is making sure that those things happen.
- 22:41And it is a divine encounter with the angelic.
- 22:45And Peter here knows now that he was saved for a purpose. 12 And
- 22:55when he had considered the thing, he came to the House of
- 22:59Mary, the mother of John, whose surname was Mark, where many
- 23:04were gathered together praying, This is the upper room, this was
- 23:08John Mark's house, the disciple who probably was the one who ran
- 23:17away naked in the garden. This was the disciples who wrote
- 23:25the Gospel of Mark through the OR oration of Peter.
- 23:32And we can see here that John Mark is mentioned here in the
- 23:35book of Acts. He's going to go on to be a
- 23:37prominent figure in the 1st century church.
- 23:42And here the people are all in the upper room, just praying,
- 23:45and Peter comes there. 13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the
- 23:52gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda. 14 And when she
- 23:57knew Peter's voice, she did not open the gate for gladness, but
- 24:02ran in and told how Peter stood before the gate. 15 And they
- 24:06said unto her, You're mad. But she constantly affirmed that
- 24:10it was Even so. Then they said it is his Angel.
- 24:14Imagine this. They're in the upper room.
- 24:17They're praying for Peter to get out of prison.
- 24:19Peter's out of prison. And they don't believe it.
- 24:22Isn't that just the futility of our humanity, friends, They were
- 24:28praying for the very thing, but perhaps they did not even expect
- 24:32that it would happen. And isn't our prayer life
- 24:34sometimes like that? Let's believe in the things that
- 24:37are not as if they already are friends.
- 24:45They thought it was just Peter's Angel.
- 24:48And there's a little bit of theology here with these
- 24:53guardian angels and the angels beholding the face of the
- 24:57Father, these children's angels. You can see here that the
- 25:01angelic realm is real, and it is more real than the physical
- 25:08world that we find ourselves in. 16 But Peter continued knocking,
- 25:19and when they had opened the door and saw him, they were
- 25:22astonished. Why would they be astonished?
- 25:25The very thing that they had been praying for?
- 25:27When we pray the will of God, that is when you see things
- 25:31start to happen, when you actually see your prayers
- 25:34answered is when your heart is in line with the will of God.
- 25:39When your prayers are in line with what God wants, you will
- 25:43see greater things. 17 But he beckoning unto them with the
- 25:50hand to hold their peace, he declared unto them, how the Lord
- 25:54had brought him out of the prison.
- 25:56And he said, Go show these things unto James and to the
- 26:00brothers. And he departed and went unto
- 26:03another place. So you need to know that he's
- 26:05not talking about the James that was just beheaded.
- 26:08He's talking about the Lord Jesus Christ brother James who
- 26:12wrote the epistle James. And we need to know that this
- 26:18James was an unbeliever during the lifetime ministry of Jesus
- 26:23here on this earth. But after the Lord Jesus
- 26:26ascended to the right hand of God, this brother of Jesus
- 26:31became a believer and a prominent figure in the early
- 26:35church. And Peter here saying, Go tell
- 26:38the brothers, and go tell James. 18.
- 26:46Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the
- 26:51soldiers. What was become of Peter 19.
- 26:55And when Herod had sought for him and found him not, he
- 27:02examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be
- 27:06put to death. And he went down from Judea to
- 27:09Caesarea and their abode. So you can see here this
- 27:15despicable act of Herod, this murderous intent of Herod.
- 27:23He could not be satisfied by executing one of the apostles.
- 27:28So what did he do? He executed the guards and the
- 27:32soldiers that were in charge of him.
- 27:37And he was bloodthirsty, and he was about to be dealt with. 20
- 27:44And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon, but
- 27:49they came with 1 accord to him. And having made Blastus the
- 27:54King's Chamberlain, their friend, they desired peace,
- 27:59because their country was nourished by the King's country.
- 28:02So we can see that Tyre and Sidon depended upon King Herod
- 28:09for their sustenance, and here they are sick of fans of him,
- 28:18and they are just going in and they are going to give him fake
- 28:27fanfare and try to try to please him with all of their false
- 28:37worship. And let's see how Herod takes
- 28:40it. 21 And upon a set day, Herod, arrayed in a royal
- 28:46apparel, sat upon his throne and made an oration unto them.
- 28:51So Josephus the Jewish historian, writing to the
- 28:57Romans, he pinned this little event down and said that Herod
- 29:05came out early in the morning, and he had a garment of silver
- 29:12on. And as the sun was coming up and
- 29:15it was shining upon the silver, it was reflecting resplendent
- 29:22out. And the people there were
- 29:25looking upon Herod as his apparel was shining bright. 22
- 29:33And the people gave a shout, saying It is the voice of a God
- 29:36and not of a man. Beware, friends, beware.
- 29:43Beware of any time that a human being demands to be worshipped
- 29:48as a God or even accepts any amount of worship.
- 29:53And you see it in our culture and you see it in our day.
- 29:56And people are playing games with God and they are thinking
- 30:00that they're going to get away with calling themselves a
- 30:03lowercase G God. And if we will just stay in
- 30:09tune, just keep watching, you're going to see these people
- 30:13upended. And that is a matter of fact.
- 30:17That is not opinion. 23 And immediately the Angel of the
- 30:25Lord struck him, because he did not give God the glory, and he
- 30:29was eaten of worms and gave up the ghost.
- 30:34So again Josephus, the Jewish historian, recounts this story,
- 30:42saying that he had a pain in his stomach, and after dealing with
- 30:50that pain he died. 24 But the word of God grew and multiplied.
- 30:5725 And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when
- 31:01they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them
- 31:04John, whose surname was Mark. Let's just think about this for
- 31:10a little while. You've got an evil, tyrannical
- 31:13ruler who refuses to give God the glory, and he has done away
- 31:18with you. Have the early church being
- 31:22persecuted and pushed down, and they grow mightily.
- 31:27The way up is down. Stay close to the clouds.
- 31:32Stay close to the ground. You'll be up in the clouds.
- 31:36That is what you need to know, friends, that God's way is not
- 31:40our way, and that the greatest shall be the least, and the
- 31:46least shall be the greatest. I hope you've been blessed by
- 31:49this amazing chapter here. I know I sure have.
- 31:57I'm praying for you. I love you.
- 32:05So does God, so does the Holy Spirit, so does Jesus.
- 32:11Jesus loves you. Let's stay armored up and prayed
- 32:16up today, full of faith, full of the Holy Ghost.
- 32:25We'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 32:26God bless you.
