- 0:06And we're back live with recovering out loud.
- 0:29Fuck, you're busy, eh? What do you mean?
- 0:32Like I've looked at. So I opened my phone and I see
- 0:35your beautiful face. By the way, I love your espresso
- 0:37videos. They're.
- 0:38Oh, thank you. They fucking crack me up.
- 0:39Appreciate that makes me use with my charm, yeah.
- 0:42Makes me have more espresso though, so fuck you for that,
- 0:45no? That's no it's so good you can
- 0:47never have enough. I agree.
- 0:49I agree. But so I opened up my phone this
- 0:51morning, I saw your beautiful face.
- 0:53And you were in Montreal last night.
- 0:55Yeah, in front of a sold out crowd.
- 0:58A week before that, you were in Disneyland.
- 1:02Yeah, Disney World. Sorry.
- 1:03What's the difference again? Orlando, LA.
- 1:06That's a pretty big difference. It's a huge difference.
- 1:09Yeah, I'm like pretending it's. Not in terms of the heat.
- 1:11It's the worst, yeah. Yeah, I saw your beautiful face
- 1:14sweating. Oh my God, dude.
- 1:17Jesus. OK, that's better.
- 1:18Sorry. I don't like hearing my voice
- 1:19too loud. Yeah, I saw your beautiful face.
- 1:22And so you're a busy guy. I, you know, I asked you to do
- 1:24this. And we had this booked for a
- 1:26while. And I was like, I'm going to be
- 1:27honest. I was like, man, he looks.
- 1:29I wouldn't even be mad if he said no.
- 1:31So I appreciate it. And thanks so much for coming
- 1:33on. Of course, man, anytime.
- 1:36So I. Appreciate the the praise.
- 1:38The busier the better, dude. Or else I fucking start eating
- 1:41more than what I do. You know?
- 1:43You get too, you know, then you just like things slow down too
- 1:47much and then you feel like you gotta work even harder to get it
- 1:51going. You know what I mean?
- 1:51Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:53And then I feel like for for me. So I'm newly getting into this.
- 1:56I hate this word but like creator space I will never use
- 2:00the word influencer because that word drives me nuts and I hope
- 2:03I'm not influencing anybody in this world.
- 2:05Do not live like me. You do, though.
- 2:08It's crazy, yeah. Yeah, I mean, like, yeah.
- 2:11And I, I always hope that somebody watches something that
- 2:15I put out one day. And it was like, huh, I never
- 2:17thought about it like that. Because that's what social media
- 2:19does for me when I'm like, I'm gonna try that in my life today.
- 2:22And specifically with addiction and mental health.
- 2:24I I came in here, I had to be, came into recovery.
- 2:27I mean, like I had to be willing because my life was such a shit
- 2:30show that I was just wrong on so many things.
- 2:32So it's like OK, I need answers now.
- 2:34Yeah, and that's the problem where like so many people, just
- 2:37the term influencer, it's like this is the world we live in,
- 2:39dude. Like everyone's on their phones.
- 2:41Everyone's trying to make someone buy something or make
- 2:44someone do something, in my case, laugh or whatever, and
- 2:47guide them somewhere, you know, mine's ticket sales, see me
- 2:49live, whatever. O it's kind of justice.
- 2:51Like, you know what people, I feel like people get just
- 2:54jealous when they do that. Yeah.
- 2:55And they're just like, bro, you're an influencer.
- 2:57You're a fucking loser. Yeah.
- 2:58It's like, well, it's a living for me now.
- 3:00Like, what do you, you know what I mean?
- 3:01Like, what do you want me to do? Not succeed?
- 3:03Is that the plan? Yeah, You know what I mean?
- 3:05Yeah. Well, no.
- 3:05Well, for you, it's different, bro.
- 3:07Like, you know what I mean? Like you have to because it's
- 3:09part of your thing. But like, fuck, I could never
- 3:11fuck that. I could never do it.
- 3:12And then you start talking to them and you're like, yeah, you
- 3:14could totally. Do you think so, man?
- 3:15You think I could do that? You know, that'd be fucking
- 3:17sick. And you're like, yeah, OK.
- 3:19You just don't want to do it, that's all.
- 3:21Yeah. Or you don't like seeing people,
- 3:23right? That's the other thing I'm
- 3:24really, really realizing. I heard a podcast yesterday
- 3:26where someone was like Alex from Mosey, Of course.
- 3:29Yeah, he's he's great. He was talking about how here.
- 3:31You go, Alex, from Rosie. Let's go.
- 3:33Yeah, let me get my thighs out for her, Mosey.
- 3:37You need to, he's like, you need to have people in your life that
- 3:39have that have bigger dreams for you than you do, right.
- 3:43And it's true. Like the people I surround
- 3:44myself with today are like, oh, yeah, you could do that.
- 3:46Yeah, do it. Like you could grow the podcast.
- 3:48Why not? Why not you?
- 3:49Why not you? You could be fucking Joe Rogan.
- 3:51Why not? You know, why not?
- 3:52And. You know what, dude, there's so
- 3:54many people being Italian like us.
- 3:55We, there's so much in our culture that's very limiting in
- 4:01terms of being successful. There is a lot of Italians that
- 4:06are like, well, no, you can't be, you can't be Joe Rogan.
- 4:10Like that's crazy. Like, you know what I mean?
- 4:12Or like, you know you what? You're gonna charge that much
- 4:15money for this? Like, that's ridiculous.
- 4:17Like that. That's way too much.
- 4:18And what are you thinking? But then you hang out with other
- 4:20people who are in the space and know the game and they're like,
- 4:23buddy, you should be charging 10 times the one that you're
- 4:24charging, you know what I mean? And then you go back and say
- 4:27that to like, let's say your dad or your mom or fuck, God forbid.
- 4:30You're not. No, they're like, are you out of
- 4:32your mind, dude? Like that's insane.
- 4:34No one's going to buy that. No, like, they just don't.
- 4:36You can't talk to people who don't get it, you know what I
- 4:39mean? You just don't get what you're
- 4:40doing. No, it's a good point.
- 4:41And so you're a stand up comic, you How long you been doing it?
- 4:45For 12, My entire life. Legit since I was like 20 so 34
- 4:52so. 13 years. 14 years dude, I was saying this to my wife this
- 4:55morning and I truly mean this what I'm about to say.
- 4:58I'm not just blowing smoke up your ass.
- 4:59Come on, blow me. Let's go bring it.
- 5:02Bring my smoke, yeah. We we went to elementary school
- 5:04together, yes. And you were the kind of guy
- 5:08that everybody would kind of a hint and myself especially, like
- 5:12you still make me laugh today, but you made us all laugh back
- 5:14then. And it was one of those like,
- 5:16man, that guy should be Mark, should be a stand up comedian
- 5:19one day. That's wild.
- 5:20I don't remember anybody saying that at all.
- 5:23We were all thinking it. Yeah, that's.
- 5:24Insane. Yeah.
- 5:26I mean, I was the funnier person in class and going to the office
- 5:29for it, so. Was there?
- 5:31Yeah. I know there was that I had a
- 5:32lot. Of that too, but I don't have.
- 5:34I remember seeing you in there I.
- 5:35Don't have anything to show for it though.
- 5:37Hey, how's it going? Good to see you buddy.
- 5:38Same thing. Yeah, exactly.
- 5:40Yeah, we give props in the office.
- 5:41Yeah, Mom brings us lunch. Back to the fucking.
- 5:44Back at it. Yeah, exactly.
- 5:46How did you get into comedy? When did you know this?
- 5:48Was there a moment that you're like, I'm going to be a fucking
- 5:50comedian? Yeah, I mean, I went to that
- 5:54Humber program, did that. So that's clown college
- 5:57basically, Humber. Comedy.
- 6:00Yeah, exactly. They give you a nose and
- 6:01everything. For real, though, they give you
- 6:03a nose and everything. But that was sort of like, OK,
- 6:07let me try and take comedy seriously.
- 6:10And I didn't really know what to do with that.
- 6:12Like the goal was like, yeah, I wanted to be Mike Myers, Jim
- 6:15Care, like those guys. And I was like, OK, what did
- 6:17they do? They went to Second City.
- 6:19They went to something and developed this skill.
- 6:23So found Humber audition got in there.
- 6:25But once I did stand up was never like, dude, doing speeches
- 6:29in school was like hell, like, oh fuck, I would like be sick.
- 6:33Everything. They're like, Mark, you're
- 6:34tomorrow. I'm like, I won't be here.
- 6:35I can guarantee you. So that was brutal for me.
- 6:38But when I did stand up for the first time, that was like the
- 6:42big defining, reassuring moment where I was like, OK, I'm going
- 6:44to be doing this forever. I feel like I'm in the right
- 6:46place. I feel like this is what I'm
- 6:47supposed to be doing. And then just went 100% and that
- 6:50was nice. That's been it.
- 6:51Never. Looked back, what about it
- 6:54excites you? Why do What about it makes you
- 6:56happy? It's very much a solo game, so
- 7:00like, there's no one else to blame but yourself.
- 7:02Do you know what I mean? Like both ways, it goes both
- 7:05ways. So it's kind of like if a joke
- 7:07didn't work or you know, like it's just you and your thoughts.
- 7:11So like, if the joke doesn't work, there's a billion reasons
- 7:16why every decision you made while you were before and while
- 7:20on stage effects what you're going to do next and affects the
- 7:23outcome. And there's no like you can't
- 7:26really stand on anybody else. You can't be like, Oh well,
- 7:29fucking buddy showed up like a fucking like it's because of
- 7:31you, bro. Like you can't blame anybody
- 7:33else, you know? And there's like, it's very much
- 7:37like working out. I'll relate that to you, not me,
- 7:40but like the work you put into it is the results you're going
- 7:43to get out of it and the consistency of it.
- 7:45So that's the only thing I've ever done where I've given that
- 7:47type of commitment to and that kind of thing.
- 7:48So. And seeing the results.
- 7:51And seeing the results and also like, you know, you see the
- 7:53growth, these are your chops get better.
- 7:54Like you know what I mean? You you're navigating it on your
- 7:57own. There's no, there's no one in
- 7:59charge of it. There's no rules.
- 8:01There's no journey to like. There's a journey, but like
- 8:05every, each person's different. There's no way of doing.
- 8:07It there's no template there. You go yeah, no template and no
- 8:11right or wrong way. So it's very much like yeah well
- 8:13I do this because this works for me when I do it, you know what I
- 8:16mean? I don't do 1 liners because I
- 8:18can't fucking write them and when I do them they don't work
- 8:20or I fucking hate it. Like, I just don't write that
- 8:23way and it doesn't work out that way, and that's that.
- 8:25So you're gonna have a different path than I will, even if we're
- 8:28both storyteller comics, you know what I mean?
- 8:31Yeah, that is cool. It's like you can kind of mold
- 8:33this whole, you know, you're kind of like making a movie,
- 8:36honestly, every single time you go on stage and you're
- 8:38presenting it and you're like, this could either flop or land
- 8:41and you kind of learn from it every single time.
- 8:44The really cool part about it is like being in the pocket.
- 8:47Like what excites me about it the most is when you're on stage
- 8:50and like I'm saying something to the audience, but my brain is
- 8:54thinking about something else. Most of the time when you're
- 8:59crushing and you're actually like, that's when you're in it
- 9:01the most and there is no, you're not thinking about anything
- 9:04after whatever. It's only when you start to
- 9:05tank, you're like, OK, this didn't work.
- 9:08This usually works right here and it didn't work right here.
- 9:11Now I'm starting to lose them. The next joke that I'm going to
- 9:14say is very similar to this one, so I should probably move that
- 9:17later and put something else here.
- 9:19Do you know what I mean? So you're doing that in your
- 9:21head to guide the rest of the show.
- 9:24Do you know what I mean? So like that part is, let's call
- 9:29it exhilarating because like it's fun and it's nerve wracking
- 9:31at the same time, you know what I mean?
- 9:32So. I've I've always wondered this
- 9:35and I hear, I hear a lot of comics say this.
- 9:37I listen to a lot of podcasts, but I hear a lot of comics say,
- 9:40you know, and you just said it there when the audience doesn't
- 9:42like it or when it starts to turn.
- 9:43How the fuck do you know when, when it starts to turn?
- 9:46Because like, to me, I don't know the difference when I'm, I,
- 9:49I go to watch a lot of stand up when I travel, especially every
- 9:52time I go to Lai always try to go to comedy.
- 9:54No New York Comedy Cellar. And I, I'm like, I don't, you
- 9:58know, the guy starts talking about bombing on stage.
- 10:01He's like, oh, this isn't going so well.
- 10:02And I'm like, look, I'm like, I didn't really feel that.
- 10:04How do you know? Oh dude, like when OK, you know
- 10:08when you're watching someone and it really is bad.
- 10:10Yeah, yeah. Like, really?
- 10:10Bad and they can't tell the the comic yeah thinks he's crushing
- 10:14or isn't changing. The way he's acting at all.
- 10:16Yeah, and all of you are like getting real uncomfortable.
- 10:20That's that moment when you can feel and you start looking at
- 10:23other people and they know when you know that sort of, let's
- 10:25call it fuck. Brutal word here, but that
- 10:28energy in the room and like you guys all feeling a certain way,
- 10:32we can all feel that in any room we go to with any scenario.
- 10:36So he 90% of the time, like a lot of comics try to just blow
- 10:40through it and not address it because addressing it is like,
- 10:43like when I address it, it has to be going very badly.
- 10:46And when it is, I'm like, I have to address this.
- 10:49Like I've tried everything at this point and now it's so bad.
- 10:52It's like the elephant in the room.
- 10:53Yeah, exactly. And you have to address it, or
- 10:56at least you're trained to. But we are our worst critics.
- 11:00So there is a problem with addressing it because sometimes,
- 11:02a lot of the times anyways, they don't know how it's supposed to
- 11:05go. So yeah, sure, maybe at this
- 11:07line, you know, because you've done this joke 1000 times, you
- 11:10know that it's going to get a big pop here.
- 11:11So if it doesn't get a huge pop that you're used to, but it gets
- 11:14like a laugh that's just not as big, and you go, oh, this isn't
- 11:19going well. It doesn't mean it's not going
- 11:21well. You're just used to it
- 11:22murdering, right? And it's not in this moment, you
- 11:25know? But a lot of times they still
- 11:26are paying attention and like, are still, you know, locked in,
- 11:29you know. Yeah, that's wicked.
- 11:31What's your creative process like writing?
- 11:33How do you write? How do you get inspired?
- 11:34It's brutal. I bet you had changes too over
- 11:37time. Well, yeah, like it's never the
- 11:39same per joke, you know, for a lot of the times, like for
- 11:43example, I have a joke that I have about dinosaurs, about my
- 11:47wife not believing in dinosaurs, which is a true story.
- 11:51And the way I wrote that was we got into an argument live in
- 11:57person, right? All arguments are live in
- 11:59person, Mark. Fuck.
- 12:00We got into an. Argument.
- 12:02I thought you were on stage for a second.
- 12:03With her, no, we got into an argument and then I had a show
- 12:05the next day and I just said the argument back and forth like
- 12:10what we actually said. I said it on stage and they
- 12:14crushed. And I was like, OK, so then I
- 12:17never wrote it. I just kept, every time I went
- 12:20on stage, I was like, let me tell that story about me and my
- 12:23wife arguing about dinosaurs. And then it started to hone
- 12:25itself as you work it on stage. And then after, you know, you
- 12:31start to remember the parts that work and don't work.
- 12:33And then it starts to shape itself into a joke or into a
- 12:36full story bit where it's like, you know, then from there you
- 12:40kind of you draft that out and be like, OK, these are the main
- 12:43points that work. And then you try and build it
- 12:45and like punch it up or try to find alternatives for certain
- 12:47parts or whatever. That's really cool.
- 12:50I've. Never heard that.
- 12:51The other side is like, you know, I have a joke about food
- 12:55basics where like the whole thing was I wrote the whole
- 12:58thing out and then went to go and perform it and then you go
- 13:01back and you just keep editing it as you go. 90% of the time my
- 13:06stuff is based on something that has happened.
- 13:08I go on stage, I tell it and then it, I tweak it as it goes.
- 13:12You find new tags on stage, you know, you write new tags for it.
- 13:16You know, this part is funny, but this line didn't work, so I
- 13:19got to change this part and then you change it to something that
- 13:21works. So look, a lot of family come
- 13:23and see me and they go, Oh well fuck, I remember when Nona did
- 13:26that, but this part never happened.
- 13:27It's like, well, the real part doesn't fucking work.
- 13:29So you know what I mean? Like some parts you have to add
- 13:33some salt and pepper, you have some seasoning and stuff.
- 13:34So, but like, it all comes from like a premise that has happened
- 13:38at some point, you know? So we talked about bombing a
- 13:42little bit. Tony Monaco, did you get any of
- 13:44the live luxy nightclub I'm. Going to clip that.
- 13:49Do it. Didn't Joe Rogan get his podcast
- 13:53thing from some UFC fighter like yelling it on stage?
- 13:56I I learned that the other day, some UFC fighter in an interview
- 13:59said Joe Rogan I got or whatever he said and he clipped it from
- 14:03that interview after the fight. I know I didn't even know that.
- 14:06Either I. Didn't know that either.
- 14:08Yeah. So I wanted to ask you.
- 14:11This is a sensitive topic, but have you ever bombed before?
- 14:14No. It's not sensitive at all.
- 14:17Yeah, so bombing is a part of the process, much like relapsing
- 14:21in. I just made that up right now.
- 14:23But how on earth does one recover from bombing, even
- 14:31either in the moment? Does it stay in your head for a
- 14:33while after? How do you get over it?
- 14:35I mean, I feel like you get a little better with it over time.
- 14:38Like the bombs stick out less and less now.
- 14:42It's almost like jokes bomb themselves rather than whole
- 14:45performances at this point in the game for me anyways.
- 14:49I mean, that's not true. There's I've had sets this year
- 14:52where it's like from start to finish, it's like complete
- 14:55silence. And I'm like, I don't know
- 14:56what's going on here. And these are people who paid to
- 14:59see me. Like on my tour I had one show,
- 15:01dude was like silence the entire hour and a half opener and me
- 15:06and I was like, but then the meet and greet line is 100
- 15:09people deep. They're all taking photos.
- 15:11They're all like, this was incredible.
- 15:12I'm like, I'm like, were we in the same?
- 15:14Room. Yeah.
- 15:15Like, was there a sound barrier? Yeah.
- 15:17Dude, and I literally, I watched the footage and I was like, no,
- 15:20there's no laughs like at all. I and I don't know what I I
- 15:25honestly have no idea what happened.
- 15:26But yeah, man, it's like you sweat more, you hate it, you
- 15:31hate yourself, you hate your bits, you blame your own
- 15:35preparation, you know, because there is a such thing as over
- 15:38preparing and stuff. But like, what is that?
- 15:41How does that like, you don't know until it's all over and you
- 15:43go fuck. I was too worried about
- 15:46memorizing this part because you know, like sometimes, for
- 15:49example, in a set list, you'll I have this whole part about going
- 15:53to Italy and like the different things that I'm grateful for in
- 15:56Canada when I go to Italy, I'm not really Italian.
- 15:59When I'm here, I feel like I'm the most.
- 16:01Italian. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:02That's good. Yeah, But I finally found like a
- 16:04structure for it that works. So I really wanted to remember
- 16:08the structure because the, you know, it works so smoothly,
- 16:12right? And transitioned into my other
- 16:13stuff. So I was like, so focused on
- 16:16remembering that. But then when I went out there,
- 16:18I wasn't really in the moment and connecting with the audience
- 16:21for the first minute or two that like I was focused on hitting
- 16:25those points that I was just like a fucking, you know, you're
- 16:28not in the bit. You're just like, what do you
- 16:30call it? Like in robot mode, you're just
- 16:32saying, yeah, you're just reciting the bit, which never
- 16:35works. And then you're like, well,
- 16:37fuck, man, you can't. That's over rehearsing.
- 16:38That's being over stressed out and fucking, you know, worried
- 16:42about bullshit. I'm not finding the words in my
- 16:46brain for the things I'm trying to describe on this entire
- 16:48podcast. It's hot.
- 16:49In here and it's it's very fucking hot here that's how I
- 16:52bomb when I bomb dude you want to see me sweat bro yeah come
- 16:56watch me bomb dude that's fucking my low back that's.
- 16:59I'll be the guy standing up and cheering.
- 17:01No, you won't. You'd be sweating too.
- 17:02You'd be like this is a mess. Yeah, well, there's such a thing
- 17:05as second hand embarrassment, right?
- 17:06And like people, you know, I was always told whenever I gave a
- 17:09public speech in certain areas, people are like, no one wants
- 17:12you to do bad. Nobody.
- 17:13It's kind of true in comedy too, right?
- 17:16Dude, nothing, I can't watch comedy like I never watch the
- 17:19people before me because if I watch someone who's eating it,
- 17:23it fucks me up. Like I I get out of my head
- 17:26space like, and I know I like a lot of times you should watch,
- 17:29you know, because if someone's going to do crowd work, you want
- 17:31to make sure that you either, you know, there's a birthday in
- 17:33a room, you know that this guy's celebrating.
- 17:35So you don't want to be like, Hey, buddy, what do you
- 17:36celebrate? And the whole room.
- 17:37We just told you, yeah. Exactly right.
- 17:39There's that type of thing. But when someone starts to bomb
- 17:42dude, I get the fuck out of that room immediately.
- 17:44I'm like I can't be a part of this, this is brutal cuz you're
- 17:46just you. Like you soak in the energy a
- 17:48little bit and it fucking. I don't know.
- 17:51But that's why I try and do like breath work before shows to get
- 17:56out of my head and shit too. You know some Wim Hof.
- 17:59Yeah, yeah, I mean, yeah, that's that's becoming a lot more
- 18:02prevalent now and, and mainstream is this kind of
- 18:04meditation breath work. Yeah, I try to do it every
- 18:06morning and it wavers. But yeah, before you do any
- 18:10public speaking, it's funny you bring up Second City because I
- 18:12did a public speaking course there and I really enjoyed it.
- 18:16I had a good time and a lot of what she was talking about, it
- 18:19was a good experience. I feel like my public speaking
- 18:24has gotten a little bit better, but I don't know.
- 18:27Have you ever gone up? Because this, this has happened
- 18:30to me before. I've had to lead some, you know,
- 18:32in recovery. We have to share our story once
- 18:35in a while. And I've been up like, you know,
- 18:38probably I could say probably 3 or 4 times in front of like I've
- 18:42been up a lot, but I've been up three or four times in the seven
- 18:44or eight years in front of like 200 people.
- 18:46And for me that was, that was a lot.
- 18:48You know, you have a podium, you have a microphone, everyone's
- 18:50looking at you. No one wants to do bad.
- 18:53What? Is that fucking podium dude?
- 18:54Yeah. Well, you don't like well
- 18:56because you, but you guys like to move back and forth, right
- 18:59like. We don't like to necessarily.
- 19:01Work the but you have to engage everybody.
- 19:04Yeah, but like, you don't like just the podium is blocking 90%
- 19:08of your body, Yeah. And body and we communicate what
- 19:1290% yeah yeah of like through. Like next time just pull the mic
- 19:16out and walk around. No, I'm serious.
- 19:19That would literally engage everybody.
- 19:21Oh, 100. Percent.
- 19:22If you went up there and been like fucked this podium shit and
- 19:24pulled the mic out and just and walked in front and just stood
- 19:28in front of it and stood at the front of the tip of the stage
- 19:31automatically, dude, you'll do 20 times better just from that.
- 19:33Yeah, I know you've got the notes and stuff like that.
- 19:36No, no, there's no notes. You just oh fuck dude, then get
- 19:38rid of that thing. Because you're telling your
- 19:40story, so it's like I I'm the only one that knows it.
- 19:43So yeah, I can say whatever I want.
- 19:46Yeah, you just have to be careful when you're talking when
- 19:49and you're holding the mic, you're not doing this.
- 19:51Yeah, sometimes you're like, so so then I was talking.
- 19:53You know what I mean? You.
- 19:54Oh, because then. Oh, yeah.
- 19:55Then no one can. And everyone here.
- 19:57Exactly. Yeah.
- 19:58Yeah. So you, you know, you talk about
- 20:02bombing. Is there What?
- 20:03What's the weirdest place you've ever done a gig at?
- 20:06At. There's quite a few weird how I.
- 20:10Don't know, just like strange. I mean, the the one where you
- 20:13just literally told me about the people not laughing like that
- 20:16would be that's, that's like a Twilight Zone moment.
- 20:19I mean I've done some at like sex clubs where people are
- 20:21getting like their Dick sucked in the front room.
- 20:23Really. You ever just bomb and buddies
- 20:26getting this Dick sucked? No.
- 20:27I can't say. Yeah, that's brutal.
- 20:30Is anyone paying attention? Everyone's paying attention and
- 20:33everyone's naked and everyone's got a boner.
- 20:35Dude, I was dude, I was performing.
- 20:38Dude. This is the crazy 'cause it's
- 20:41like I feel this way about sex in general.
- 20:45Not like everybody. If you see two people fucking
- 20:48right there, we're both looking. Everyone is like, I can't you
- 20:52see animals fucking like. Yeah, you can't look away.
- 20:54You can't look away. So when you're performing and
- 20:57there's like, you know, 200 people in there, they're all
- 21:00naked or summer in robes and they're like feeling each other.
- 21:04And this is like the preamble to their night.
- 21:07It's like you can't not see what's going on and not look.
- 21:12So this one guy sitting in the front row waiting for his date,
- 21:15cock ring on dude. Full fledger.
- 21:17Like, just so like a rock. Ready to go?
- 21:20Like just sitting there like this was he making front row
- 21:24just like watching my stand up cock ring on looking at me like
- 21:32into the bits and I'm I can't stop looking at his fucking is
- 21:36solid Dong and I'm like looking around.
- 21:38I'm like, OK, brother, like I can't do this.
- 21:40Like you have to like this is you're like either start jerking
- 21:44off, which is really weird, but it's par for the course you.
- 21:48Know at least you're doing something.
- 21:49Do something with this or or take a walk, like you know what
- 21:52I mean? And he's just like, I'm just
- 21:53waiting for my my plus one. I'm like, they're not coming.
- 21:56Like, I don't like we're an hour into the show here.
- 21:59Like they're not here. Or like, you know, can you just
- 22:01not be solid? Yeah, I call the doctor.
- 22:04It's been a while. It's been a long time.
- 22:06You have had a boner that's full tilt for this long.
- 22:08It's unbelievable. It's very weird.
- 22:10Like, and that was like, I addressed it.
- 22:12I said all this to him. He started laughing and then he
- 22:15got up. He's like, would you feel better
- 22:17if I like got up and left? I'm like, I want you to enjoy
- 22:20the show, but like, like do whatever you want, but I just
- 22:24want you to know that this is fucking me up.
- 22:25I'm like then I go to the bar dude and he comes to me and
- 22:30still full tilt boner butt naked and he's like, man, that was
- 22:34really funny. Sorry if I like interrupted you.
- 22:36He orders a drink. I'm like, oh don't worry about
- 22:38it. Orders a drink dude.
- 22:39As he turns to walk away, his Dick.
- 22:41Just. Just hits my leg.
- 22:42I'm like I'm done dude. Get me the fuck out of here man.
- 22:45His boner just fucking gets caught on my leg.
- 22:48Like how? Does that gig come about?
- 22:51Dude, there's like there's all these sex club have all the they
- 22:54have like, you know, themed nights and they have like big
- 22:56entertainment rooms where like shrimp dancing, burlesque,
- 22:59whatever, right? Like, but yeah, it gets, you
- 23:02know, then at a certain time, like after the show, like 11:00
- 23:05PM, you either have to get in a robe and get naked to stay in
- 23:08there or you got to go. So I always go obviously, you
- 23:13know, but like I, it was funny. I forgot my bag in one time.
- 23:17So I, I went back, I forgot like I had like a little fucking side
- 23:20satchel bag or whatever, crossbody Fanny pack and I left
- 23:25it side stage. And like now, the stage at this
- 23:28point was like an apparatus where you strap people to it and
- 23:33whip them and shit. There's a different kind of show
- 23:35going on after. You, yeah, there was like a, you
- 23:37know, feel free to use the stage and whip your pal.
- 23:39And that's what it was, dude. Like, I come back to get my bag
- 23:43and, like, picture just like your standard, like anybody in
- 23:47your brain, Like, they look like a bunch of school teachers, just
- 23:49like getting whipped and, you know, doing everything you can
- 23:54think of. And I just could not believe
- 23:56what people were doing in there blowing me away.
- 23:59Wow. People are into some crazy
- 24:00stuff. Wow.
- 24:01And they were like, you're just not tapped into your sexual
- 24:04side. I'm like, yeah, for sure, dude.
- 24:05Yeah, Sorry, I didn't want to get pegged tonight.
- 24:08Yeah, that wasn't in my bingo card for today.
- 24:10You know what I mean? Like.
- 24:11Come on. And I don't think my wife and
- 24:13child would appreciate. It Yeah, I don't think my wife
- 24:15wants me here at all, to be honest.
- 24:16If I wasn't getting paid, I would not be here.
- 24:19You know what I mean? So it's crazy the gigs that you
- 24:22end up doing. Man, I mean, so mental health is
- 24:27a big part of stand up, obviously.
- 24:29Yeah, so I so I hear, man. Yeah, there's, you know,
- 24:32there's, there's a stigma in mental, in comedy.
- 24:36You know, you've seen, we were talking about before the show,
- 24:38you've seen a couple of people who are now in recovery, which
- 24:40is good. That kind of, we're going
- 24:42through it in in the throes of addiction and alcoholism and
- 24:45you, you, it's kind of a thing, right?
- 24:47Like you. Hear A.
- 24:48Lot of people going through it, but how does I guess, how does
- 24:52like mental health, how do you deal with your mental health and
- 24:55around comedy, traveling, you know, being on the road a lot,
- 24:58being away from your family, What's that like?
- 25:00I I swear to do, the short answer is I eat, I swear to God.
- 25:04Like I not to make a joke about it, but like everybody deals
- 25:08with so many things and everyone had like, and certain things
- 25:12affect people differently. And what fucks me up more than
- 25:16anything is being on the road for long periods of time.
- 25:18Like, you know, you find your threshold.
- 25:20Like sometimes you book a bunch of stuff and you're like, oh,
- 25:22this is great. I've got like 2 months ready to
- 25:24go. And then you're like at like a
- 25:27month thing. Like buddy, I can't do this.
- 25:29Like I got to go back. Like you, you're just like,
- 25:32you've been on 22 different beds, you've been in 10
- 25:35different hotels. Like you know what I mean?
- 25:36Like it just it wear and tear on your body alone, the flying a
- 25:40bunch, you can get sick way easier.
- 25:43And like the last two I did, I got like I got bronchitis, I got
- 25:46walking pneumonia, I got strep throat, I fucking had a fever.
- 25:50Like you know what I mean? You're like, this isn't a 2
- 25:52month span because you're sleeping like shit.
- 25:55You're on to the next, you're on to the next and you think you
- 25:57can do it. I noticed earlier on ANYWAYS
- 26:00that my threshold was about like 3 weeks.
- 26:02I was like OK, after three weeks I'm like almost sick of it, you
- 26:06know what I mean? You're like, OK, mentally and
- 26:08physically I'm drained and I need a reset.
- 26:12I got to go back home. I got to eat my own food that I
- 26:15make. And you know what I mean?
- 26:16Because like you're eating late after a show, you sleep in maybe
- 26:20you go to the gym, you're on a plane, you go to the next spot,
- 26:23you're eating on the road, you're eating in a car.
- 26:25Like especially in Canada, it's like it's really long drives
- 26:29where you're, you know, you'll wake up in Edmonton, you'll do a
- 26:32show, wake up the next morning and you're driving 8 hours to
- 26:35fucking wherever you do the show that night, you sleep the next
- 26:37day, you're driving 4 hours somewhere else.
- 26:39Like when you do that for even a week, you're like, OK, you know,
- 26:44fuck, we got a slot of gig in here where we're here for three
- 26:46days or something. You know what I mean?
- 26:47To really break it up and the wear and tear can get a lot,
- 26:50which keeps you it keeps you busy, but it also you lose a
- 26:55little bit of like, I don't want to say reality because you're
- 26:59not really in touch with what's going on in your personal life
- 27:02in like mainstream life. You're just like, I'm going to
- 27:05this town to entertain these people with the stuff that I
- 27:07think works. You're working on some bits,
- 27:09you're crafting an hour, whatever.
- 27:12But the having a kid is like way worse.
- 27:16Dude. You're like, you go home.
- 27:18Like I was in Montreal for the weekend, dude, was it gone four
- 27:20days? I come home, I'm like my
- 27:22daughter is taller. She looks like I'm like, what
- 27:25the fuck? Like you just feel like you
- 27:27missed out on like a growth period, right?
- 27:30And like because you're so busy and you're moving a lot, the
- 27:33kids schedule is so much different, which is terrible
- 27:35when you come home, you know? But let me try and gather my
- 27:38thoughts here on, like what I'm trying to say.
- 27:39But like, you know, you come home, you feel like you missed
- 27:43stuff. The schedule is different when
- 27:44you're away. You try to FaceTime call and be
- 27:46a part of it. But you know, they have nap
- 27:48times, they have bed times. They wake up at a certain time,
- 27:50which is completely the opposite of your clock when you're on the
- 27:54road. So like, you know, 8:00, my
- 27:57daughter's going to bed. That's prime time Showtime.
- 28:00OK, so I'm missing good nights. OK, let me try and get good
- 28:03mornings. I've been up till 3:00 in the
- 28:06morning. I'm up at 10:11 AM, You know
- 28:10what I mean? I wake up, I have like half an
- 28:13hour. She's going in for a nap.
- 28:14It's like, you know, and then when you get home, the kids
- 28:18like, for example, I got home at like 1:00 in the morning last
- 28:22night. The kid was up at 6:30.
- 28:24So like you're not getting the sleep you're.
- 28:26And then when you are with her in the morning, like it's
- 28:28incredible. She's so happy to see me.
- 28:30She's throw whatever. You know, my wife's like every
- 28:33morning she runs to like your side of the bed and thinks
- 28:36you're there, which is like soul crushing.
- 28:38Yeah, you're like, that's fucking awful.
- 28:40So like all you want to do is be there.
- 28:42So like I'm trying to do things in my life now to just manage my
- 28:46time better and buy my time back so I can do whatever the fuck I
- 28:49want. So I'm trying to outsource
- 28:51everything I can. I'm trying to have editors,
- 28:53videograhers, like I just want to show U and do what I do.
- 28:57Everything else, everybody else can fucking deal with it because
- 28:59I don't want to deal with anybody but my child and that's
- 29:04that, you know what I mean? So like, tell me where I got to
- 29:06be, at what time, deposit the money in my account.
- 29:08If I have to take half my money and give it to other people so
- 29:11that I can do fuck all in my backyard with my kid when she's
- 29:15home and available to do it perfect, no problem.
- 29:18You know what I mean? Like, I don't mind losing a
- 29:20chunk of my money to other people if it's going to make
- 29:24this journey or my career run smoother, you know, give it up
- 29:28to Diddy. That's the one thing he said
- 29:29that made sense. He was like outsource man as
- 29:32soon as you can, which he was like, 'cause then you can have
- 29:36more oil parties, right? Like that was this whole thing.
- 29:39But so many, I think Jay-Z said that, too.
- 29:42It was just like the sooner that you can get people to take on
- 29:45the hats that you're wearing that can just do it better than
- 29:49you. Like I'm at the point, dude,
- 29:50where like everyone you're dealing with does this pretty
- 29:53well. Like does other things really
- 29:55well. So like, why am I going to try
- 29:57and learn how to use lenses and cameras and spend 2 weeks with a
- 30:02camera trying to figure it the fuck out?
- 30:05Let me pay this kid who literally sleeps next to his
- 30:07lenses and would like bury me in any conversation with this
- 30:12stuff. Like why am I bothering?
- 30:14Pay him his fee, have him show up.
- 30:16It's going to look 20 times better.
- 30:17It's going to runway smoother. We're gonna have no headaches,
- 30:20you know what I mean? So I've learned the hard way
- 30:23many times by hiring people who don't know what the fuck they're
- 30:24doing. So, you know, that was very
- 30:27long. No, it's a.
- 30:28It's a good point. I mean and.
- 30:29I don't know if I dealt with how I deal with the mental health,
- 30:32but you don't man like you like you know you.
- 30:36Sorry, I got to get the sweat. Oh my God.
- 30:38Yeah, dude, look at. This this water.
- 30:40This is the water bottle just dripping sweat.
- 30:43I'm wearing fucking. My thighs are out anyways.
- 30:48I love it. Sorry, I don't like dude, you
- 30:53binge eat. That's my biggest problem in
- 30:55life. I binge eat and I do everything
- 30:57in excess so I'm not a big drinker.
- 31:00I've tried to cut alcohol almost entirely because like if me and
- 31:03you were sitting here having beers, I'd be like 6 beers deep
- 31:06because I drink it to finish it. Do you know what I mean?
- 31:09I eat to finish it. I don't do blow on certain drugs
- 31:12because if I do, we're doing it until it's done, you know?
- 31:16What I'm saying that was me, yeah.
- 31:17Yeah, yeah, Like you, just that's the culture we come from
- 31:20is like, you must finish this plate of food because the war
- 31:23happened and it might happen again.
- 31:25And if you don't eat these potatoes, you might never see a
- 31:27potato again. That's my no, no, you know.
- 31:29Yeah, well, the kids across the world don't get it, so, you
- 31:31know, right. Should be grateful that you have
- 31:33it right. Yeah, so that's where, you know,
- 31:36after shows, dude, it's fucked. Like I just, I eat enough for a
- 31:40lot of people. Yeah.
- 31:42So you know, what's your go to? I love diners, dude.
- 31:45I just, they're the fucking best.
- 31:47Like greasy spoons? Greasy spoon diners do where
- 31:49ladies triceps are taking your orders like the swinging fucking
- 31:55triceps. Yeah, Bertha.
- 31:58Yeah, fucking Betty. Luanne Sue.
- 32:00Like she's got a the shorter haircut than me and shit.
- 32:04Like I love that her triceps swinging, her hands feel like
- 32:08fucking Basel. Like, you know, this is the shit
- 32:12I like because you can get anything you want, bro.
- 32:14Like I love fucking yeah this at night, you know what I mean?
- 32:17Yeah. So like I'm basically just
- 32:18having a construction plate. I love I fuck with the
- 32:22construction plate all the time. Yeah, give me the lumberjack,
- 32:25whatever you guys call it. Yeah, you know what I mean.
- 32:26Like. Do you do you have any places
- 32:28that you love to play like where the fans just kind of, you know,
- 32:32feel more receptive to your jokes or.
- 32:34Yeah, I mean, I love Alberta. Alberta's great.
- 32:37Like in Canada, Yeah, Alberta seems to be awesome.
- 32:39I mean, I've been going there for a long time, so that helps.
- 32:41But like the audiences are just fucking, they're loving it, man.
- 32:45They're like they're there to fucking laugh and they get it.
- 32:49They're no, they are a very conservative province.
- 32:54It's a. Pretty blue over there.
- 32:55It's very blue, but where if you take a place like Ottawa that's
- 33:02very red Liberal, let's say, I can tailor my bits to really
- 33:10anyone can be more racist, you know what I mean?
- 33:12Or like more stereotypically this or that, or push these
- 33:15buttons or play more conservative.
- 33:17We can all do that. It's harder to play more left,
- 33:20I'd say, which is, let's call it cleaner.
- 33:23But I've been doing corporate clean comedy for fucking since I
- 33:25started. So.
- 33:27But you just find that the audience member is more nervous
- 33:31to laugh at stuff because of how they they will be perceived if
- 33:36they will get in trouble. Oh, they're there with their
- 33:39government staff party and they're always like, like they
- 33:41always feel like they have to hide their laughs, which is the
- 33:44complete opposite of what a liberal is, which makes me like
- 33:47my brain baffle. But in Alberta, they're just
- 33:51like, yeah, sure, they want you to go this way.
- 33:55But regardless, they're just open for like, yeah, man, let's
- 33:58fucking do it tonight. You know what I mean?
- 34:00Regardless of what you say. So if you drop a little bit of
- 34:03this or that, they love it, they eat it up.
- 34:06Now I don't, I try not to do that.
- 34:08I do my shit the same everywhere.
- 34:10But you know, you play to your audience and fuck, Alberta's
- 34:13just ready to go, man. Yeah, yeah, it seems like that,
- 34:16you know, they just, they're just want to have a good time,
- 34:18right? They they know what they came
- 34:19for Yeah, Cuz when I go to a comedy show, I want to laugh,
- 34:22right? I want I you know I'm AI like
- 34:25dark jokes right? And some people don't want to
- 34:27laugh. Why they come to comedy clubs?
- 34:30I know this sounds insane, but like you can feel it where they
- 34:32come in nervous. They're like, I hope they don't
- 34:35make fun of me. I hope they don't see this.
- 34:37I really hope that that doesn't like you see people being like
- 34:40nervous on. Guard.
- 34:41Their their guards up. That's the whole first half of
- 34:44the show is to be like fucking relax, man.
- 34:46It's like even people who sit in front row like oh fuck, it's
- 34:49like, dude, what am I going to say?
- 34:51That's going to really shatter your day here.
- 34:53Hey, you're a loser. Hey, you're a fat bald fuck.
- 34:56Like what am I going to say? And like, and if I say that
- 34:58you're going to be like feel like you're just going to cry
- 35:01and breakdown. Like I don't get it why people
- 35:03get so nervous, but a lot of them don't like being around
- 35:06people or being the center of the tension or picked on.
- 35:10Like it's triggering for some people to be like a man.
- 35:12You look like a fucking hey, you know, you look like this guy.
- 35:15Everyone can see you from behind you.
- 35:17You can't see anybody else. You feel picked on or whatever.
- 35:20So like, I get it, but like no one's there.
- 35:23Be the butt end of the joke for half a second, dude.
- 35:25Be part of the greater cause for just literally 10 seconds 'cause
- 35:29I am going to be for the next hour and a half and you're
- 35:32paying to see it so fuck, just relax.
- 35:34You know, easier said than done. I know things can be trigger for
- 35:37some people, but anyways I talk a lot.
- 35:40Do you do it's OK feel? Free to be like OK mark yo, but
- 35:43listen. I have people in here so that we
- 35:46can hear them. I talk too much anyways on this
- 35:48podcast so don't even. Worry.
- 35:49No, I feel like you don't talk enough.
- 35:50I mean, you should be like Mark, OK, that's enough.
- 35:53Yeah, I need a guy to just like, hey.
- 35:55Yeah, I have a guy right on the other side.
- 35:56I can't be like, OK, yeah, shut the fuck up, dude.
- 36:00I feel like so the thing with do you do crowd work yeah, cuz a
- 36:04lot yeah. I feel like it could go either
- 36:07way, right. But the thing I like about crowd
- 36:10work, at least from the clips that I cuz I don't, I don't
- 36:12know, being an being a viewer of that like, so it's a taped
- 36:17special. You know, live is different.
- 36:19Live anything goes for me. Live.
- 36:21I like whatever I'm there to see.
- 36:22It's your show. But I, I kind of I'm a little
- 36:24more picky with my, my stand up that I watch recorded.
- 36:30You see a lot of things go in places that you don't
- 36:32necessarily think that they're gonna go.
- 36:34Do you have any good stories about like that Working the
- 36:36crowd and you know how it ended up?
- 36:40Oh, like it going somewhere and it's like turns into a gem
- 36:43moment type thing. Like it turns out, man, this was
- 36:46such a good moment like a month ago and I have the clip.
- 36:49It's going to come out soon. Perfect.
- 36:50Once I edit it, which might not be for another five years.
- 36:54Like fucking editors. So this guy was in this girl was
- 37:01in the front row. Beautiful, beautiful woman
- 37:04sitting front row. No one next to it was a theater
- 37:07show in Hamilton. No one's sitting next to her.
- 37:11And the guy on her left, like on her right side.
- 37:13So I looked at them as if they were oh, no, right.
- 37:16And I was like, oh, you guys are together.
- 37:17She's like, no, no, no, I'm. I'm not with him, all right.
- 37:20And his wife was next to him. I was like, oh, sorry, whatever.
- 37:23Did some crowd work on these two?
- 37:24Whatever. And I was like, is this seat
- 37:27next to you empty? Like, where are they?
- 37:29Like, where is this person? And they were like, oh, he's
- 37:32here. He's just going to get drinks.
- 37:33I was like, oh, nice. I was like, what does he do for
- 37:36a living? She was like, I have no idea.
- 37:38I'm like, do you know this person?
- 37:40And she's like, yeah, yeah. This is like our, like, third
- 37:42date. I'm like, oh, what's his name?
- 37:45I'm like, we should do something fun.
- 37:46Like when he comes in, we'll like, boom at the same time or
- 37:48like, cheer or say something right?
- 37:49Or chant his name. I was like, what's his name?
- 37:51We'll chant his name. She's like, I have no idea.
- 37:55I was like, you don't know what he does.
- 37:57You don't know his name, and he's buying you drinks.
- 37:59He bought tickets to the show. Yes.
- 38:01Have you put out? No, what's been going on?
- 38:04I was like these last three days, he's paid for everything.
- 38:06I'm like, so this guy is wine and dining you for the last two
- 38:10months, taking you on like 3 or 4 dates.
- 38:12You don't know his name. She's like, no, as I say that
- 38:17dude. This guy comes walking.
- 38:19Oh my God. Perfect.
- 38:20And I'm like, Boo, like we all start booing him.
- 38:23OK, I shouldn't have done that. I felt so bad.
- 38:25But he's into it. He's got his beers.
- 38:27He's like, fuck yeah, fuck you guys, whatever, right?
- 38:29He sits down and I'm like, hey, buddy, what's your name?
- 38:32And he's like Steve. And I look at him like, you
- 38:34know, I give her a head nod. I'm like, what do you do for a
- 38:38living? Blah, blah, blah.
- 38:38I get all this information out, dude, about him.
- 38:41And she looks at me. She's like, thank you.
- 38:43And I look at the audience. I'm like, I'm doing the Lord's
- 38:45work. And he had no idea.
- 38:48No clue, I'm like saving relationships one day at a time.
- 38:50You're like, this guy's a poor. SAP was she embarrassed while
- 38:54you were doing that? Oh, she was dying, dude.
- 38:56She was dying. Yeah.
- 38:57It was such a funny moment because, like, the whole
- 38:58audience was in on something. Like that's what I like about
- 39:01crowd workers. Like if when you get good
- 39:02moments, man, they're fucking, they're the best moments of the
- 39:05show 'cause they know it's organic, you know?
- 39:08Then there's parts where you have duts who fucking say
- 39:11nothing or try to like out joke you and you're like just answer
- 39:14me dude. Like you know, what do you do
- 39:15for a living? Your mom, You're like OK my mom,
- 39:19you fucked my mom out of shit like.
- 39:21You got me. You got me dude.
- 39:22Now what? Like now this sucks and you're a
- 39:24loser have. You ever had a Heckler?
- 39:26Oh yeah, yeah. How do you deal with that?
- 39:27I I find it interesting how everyone kind of deals with it,
- 39:30but. I just try to engage with them
- 39:32as little as possible. Like you talk to them, you try
- 39:35and shut it down a little bit, you know what I mean?
- 39:38Give them their true seconds of fame, you know, and then try and
- 39:42flip it and make it funny somehow.
- 39:43I don't try to go like roast for roast because I'm not the best
- 39:49roast comic unless I'm angry. And when I get angry and I'm
- 39:52like going at you, it's hard for me to like revert back to like
- 39:56my usual self on stage, you know what I mean?
- 39:59And I feel like it takes away from the rest of the show.
- 40:01And I hate when people come and we get side railed by this
- 40:04bullshit for like 10 minutes. But that being said, I've been
- 40:08like out roasted to death. Oh really?
- 40:10Oh. This one lady, dude, she was
- 40:12hammered in Kingston, bro. She roasted me so bad where I
- 40:16started laughing, being like you're on fire, like you're
- 40:18killing. Come up here.
- 40:19Yeah. Like she was, and I was hosting
- 40:22the show, so like I got on stage and she was standing up chirping
- 40:26how I was looking and I was like, buddy, the show isn't even
- 40:28fucking started yet, whatever. And the crowd is dying 'cause
- 40:31like she said something about like, like I look like Patrick
- 40:34from SpongeBob, like something like this.
- 40:36And I started laughing. I start chirping her.
- 40:39They're laughing. I'm like, OK, I won, we're good.
- 40:41She does it again. I can't even remember.
- 40:43I haven't recorded somewhere, but we go back and forth a few
- 40:46lines and then she gives me like fucking three or four in a row.
- 40:49Just darts. Like every one of them crushing
- 40:52the audience is like hyperventilating.
- 40:55And I'm just standing there. I'm like, OK, you win.
- 40:57Like I, I lost Like this is fucked.
- 40:59You are unbelievable. Like, you know, and I made them
- 41:03start the show over again. Like I was like, I'm going to
- 41:05get off stage. We're going to play music again.
- 41:08Like I'm getting on stage and I'm coming back on and we're
- 41:11starting the show again. Like I can't, I'll die like
- 41:13this. You know what I mean?
- 41:16Maybe she was a a comic. No, no, she was just like your
- 41:19standard. It was a construction company's
- 41:22concrete construction company's Christmas party that was in the
- 41:25audience. And she was like, you know, the
- 41:28bra who smoked fucking 40 packs. Edition.
- 41:30Oh yeah. Yeah, she's like, yeah, yeah.
- 41:32It'll just like your fucking, you know?
- 41:33She's like, I bet you have gout like, you know what I mean?
- 41:35Like. How about you come back with
- 41:37that? I'm like, fuck, I don't.
- 41:38Yeah, yeah, sure. You got a sleep apnea machine in
- 41:41the hotel. Like they're like oh fuck dude.
- 41:42Like and like she just sounds hilarious and like she's the
- 41:46fucking ball Buster in the. Office who?
- 41:48Deals with guys that look like me all day.
- 41:49She's she's already got a one up on you.
- 41:53Yeah, she's got credibility. She's got credibility around the
- 41:56office. Yeah, VIP ball Buster.
- 41:57Oh my God, Where do you see your future going, Mark?
- 42:01Like, what do you, what do you want to do?
- 42:03What's next for you? I don't.
- 42:05Know dad, like fuck, what's your five year plan?
- 42:10I love you. You're gonna make money doing
- 42:13what? Yeah, sorry.
- 42:14What's this? What's the whole thing here?
- 42:15You're charging how much? Yeah.
- 42:18What's next for you? I mean, my goal is to get out of
- 42:21this couch as soon as possible because I'm sweating.
- 42:24I'm sorry. About that, No, no, I'm joking.
- 42:26I'm hoping the goal for stand up.
- 42:28I'd love to, you know, be selling out theaters across
- 42:31North America. That'd be great.
- 42:33I'd like, I only want to do 1 stadium and that's fucking ours,
- 42:36you know what I mean? I'd love to do Air Canada
- 42:38Center. That's what I call it still.
- 42:41Scotia Bank. Yeah, I'd like to do Scotia.
- 42:42Bank Yeah, ACC it's way better. Yeah, even Roger Center, like,
- 42:46you know, no one, no comedian has done that.
- 42:48I know it's completely unnecessary and not ideal for
- 42:50comedy. Why the the acoustics are all
- 42:52fucked up. I guess, yeah.
- 42:53Yeah. Well, it's also like you're
- 42:54watching the screen the whole time, you know what I mean?
- 42:56Like, have you been in any comedy shows at the Scotia Bank?
- 42:59Yeah, Dean Cook, a long time ago.
- 43:01Yeah, like you watch the screen the whole time or?
- 43:02Yeah, I know. I watched.
- 43:03I watched the screen. Yeah, like I saw Sebastian.
- 43:05I was like, I was in the lower bowl, but I was watching the
- 43:07screen the whole time. Like, yeah, he's funny.
- 43:09When you're that physical in your fate, like you want to, you
- 43:12got to be pretty close. So I feel like theaters is as
- 43:14big as it can get without feeling too distant.
- 43:18And some theaters that are in like the, you know, 5 like 6-7
- 43:23thousand range, it still feels like when you're in the back on
- 43:25the balcony, like you're like, I can't believe they don't have a
- 43:28screen here. Like this is, you know, they're
- 43:30so small and so far away. You feel really detached, like
- 43:33it sucks. I I would hate to buy it like
- 43:36someone buy a ticket to my show and feel that disconnected.
- 43:39So, but I do feel like there's a good happy medium and there's
- 43:42some good venues out there to be at that nice, you know, like
- 43:44sound. Center Meridian.
- 43:45Yeah, I mean, Meridian is fucking huge.
- 43:47Like, is it? Yeah.
- 43:48And I, I love Meridian Hall, but that's the show I'm talking
- 43:51about. Like I was in like, you know,
- 43:52row 30 on the balcony. And I was like, I'm just like, I
- 43:56don't even, they're like miniature.
- 43:59There's no screens. I felt really out of it, you
- 44:00know what I mean? But yeah, I think I saw Theo Von
- 44:04there one time. Yeah, I think it was at that
- 44:06one, but. But I mean, the price reflected
- 44:09like I paid like 30 bucks was like, whatever.
- 44:10Yeah, I don't even remember who the fuck I saw, to be honest.
- 44:13Jim Gaffigan. Jim Gaffigan?
- 44:14Nice. But I love Jim Gaffigan and my
- 44:16wife hates Jim Gaffigan. Yeah, yeah.
- 44:18You either love him or you. Hate him, my wife's like this is
- 44:19the worst show I've ever seen. And like, too dark or just.
- 44:22No, she was just like, I don't even know what the fuck this is
- 44:24like. Yeah, she's just like, I don't
- 44:25like, it's not funny. That's.
- 44:27Outrage. There's nothing worse than when
- 44:28you go to a comedy show someone and you're the only one laughing
- 44:31and you're like, are we gonna have to break up now?
- 44:33Oh yeah. Oh, my wife's the worst.
- 44:35Like for her style of comedy, I'm like, I don't even know what
- 44:38you find funny at all. Like she's like, you're
- 44:40hilarious. I'm like, OK, but like, that's
- 44:42not good. That's good.
- 44:43Yeah, right. But like, I've taken her to see,
- 44:45like, a lot of the greats and she's like, I don't know, dude.
- 44:47Like that was OK. You know, I get it.
- 44:50Some venues, like, like I said, you know, you see Chappelle at
- 44:52Scotiabank, you're like, you know, it's hard to get into it.
- 44:56You know, we went to see Kevin Hart.
- 44:58I was Scotiabank fucking like last row just.
- 45:01Bleeding. Yeah, I'm nose just drenched and
- 45:04I'm like, this wasn't great, but you know.
- 45:09It's all on the venue. It's all on the venue.
- 45:10And where you're sitting. Yeah, I mean, I'd like to do
- 45:13some movies or some TV or something too, like, you know,
- 45:15do some comedy, acting and. Yeah, sure you were.
- 45:18Yeah, you were in a Canadian Tire commercial.
- 45:20I meant to bring that up to you. Yeah, that was funny it.
- 45:22Was whatever dude, I did like 900 takes.
- 45:25They chose the worst one. I liked it.
- 45:27It was just like an. Yeah, whatever.
- 45:28It was fun. We did a bunch of takes.
- 45:30A lot of great people on that shoe.
- 45:31That was fun. But you know, commercials, I
- 45:33don't love them. I'm also the Planet Fitness
- 45:35Sasquatch. I don't know if you.
- 45:36Know. Oh no.
- 45:38Wow. Have you seen those commercials?
- 45:39Yeah, I'm going to watch those differently now with a different
- 45:41mindset, Yeah. So.
- 45:43That's my friend, yeah. The more, dude, I love the
- 45:46comedy, acting stuff, you know, like all the sketches.
- 45:49That's what I get to do on social media, you know, except
- 45:51low budget. But yeah, like, you know, that's
- 45:53why I got into it. You know, I wanted to be fucking
- 45:56Chris Farley and Mike Myers and do 50 characters and shit.
- 45:59So that'd be fun to do something like that.
- 46:01Yeah, I love your stuff man appreciate it.
- 46:04I I want to close with this and I usually on my podcast with
- 46:07with something some. I feel like I have not talked
- 46:10about mental health at all like and how I deal with it, which is
- 46:15like. You complained a lot.
- 46:17No, I'm kidding. Yeah, exactly.
- 46:18That's all I do, dude. That's I rant.
- 46:20I complain. You know what's funny?
- 46:21My wife would say this. My wife would say Mark deals
- 46:24with mental health by calling people during the day and saying
- 46:28the same story to 40 people. That's good.
- 46:31That's that's helpful. That works.
- 46:32Man, yeah. Yeah, it's the science.
- 46:34There I do find that it works and you get different
- 46:36perspectives. It's kind of what I do with
- 46:38jokes, like I'll call like 4 different comics to run bit the
- 46:41same bit by them, but they're all very different.
- 46:43So I'm getting a wide range of, you know?
- 46:45Yeah, I mean, in recovery it's the same thing.
- 46:48So whenever, every time I relapsed, it was always because
- 46:51I had a great idea that I didn't bounce off anybody, right.
- 46:55And I always make this joke, but when I have good ideas, like,
- 46:58and when I mean good idea, I mean about specifically like,
- 47:01I'm feeling this way and I want to fix it.
- 47:05And I know what's going to work, right?
- 47:06That alcohol, that Band-Aid, that quick solution.
- 47:09And then immediately you might have heard this one might not
- 47:11have heard this. This is common across all of us.
- 47:13Immediately it's like you, you just 100% forget about all the
- 47:18bad times. Like it just, it just escapes
- 47:20your memory all of a sudden. And you just remember that one
- 47:23fucking quick moment that you had where you're like, that was
- 47:26fun. Yeah, let's do it.
- 47:27That was fun. Luckily I'm I'm further away
- 47:30from that now, but it's because I talk to people and I call.
- 47:32So I always make the joke that whenever I have this idea of and
- 47:37I, I'm like, Nope, that's good. I'm going to do it.
- 47:38I'm going to I'm going to start taking ADHD medication again.
- 47:41That was one for me. I'm going to get on steroids.
- 47:42That was another one for me. And it's just like it's a
- 47:44seemingly small thing that kind of grows into this, you know,
- 47:48smoking mess again, right? Eventually, right.
- 47:51So. Eventually you're like, I'll get
- 47:53there. It's coming.
- 47:55Yeah, No. It's coming.
- 47:57Yeah. So, yeah, just quickly, the the
- 47:59thing, the analogy that I like to give is like, it's like me
- 48:02performing to an audience of myself.
- 48:04And I'm just like, this is my idea.
- 48:05And everyone's like, yeah, do it, man.
- 48:07That's great, right? It's not a good way to live.
- 48:10No, I hear you. I'm trying to think of the
- 48:12things that I actually do to cope with stuff.
- 48:15Blasting music at an uncomfortable level in my car is
- 48:18definitely one. I love long drives.
- 48:22Like everyone's like, Oh, I can't believe you.
- 48:23I'm like, I want to drive and I would prefer if you weren't in
- 48:26the car. You know what I mean?
- 48:27Like it's all like like when I'm people like, oh, you're going to
- 48:31you want a hotel for the gig? I'm like, no, it's like a four
- 48:33hour drive back home at like midnight.
- 48:35I would love that. Oh fuck, dude.
- 48:37And I'm like have the volume maxed out and just have music
- 48:40going. I'll bawl my eyes out sometimes.
- 48:42Like, you know, you just you go through your head quite a bit.
- 48:46That's great. Or something to really like
- 48:50going to the movies. Like the movie theater is one of
- 48:53my favorite things on the planet.
- 48:54Me too, because you don't you're not looking at your phone.
- 48:57You're fully submerged into this piece of art, if you will.
- 49:00Couldn't agree with anymore for that period of time and it
- 49:02really pulls you out of it. It's like any live stuff.
- 49:04Like I go see bands all the time.
- 49:06Like anytime I go see something live where you got to be in it
- 49:10is the best because it it pulls you out of it.
- 49:12You have to pay attention, you get submerged into it, you go on
- 49:15this journey that they mean for you to go on, and then all of a
- 49:18sudden you're like, oh, I forgot 2.
- 49:19Hours. You're not thinking about
- 49:20yourself. Yeah, and you know what's funny?
- 49:22One of the best. I have to sit up because this is
- 49:25fucking. Impressive, I mean.
- 49:27Fuck, by the end of it my chin's eating my neck.
- 49:30But this conversation, one of the best messages I've ever
- 49:35gotten in my life. This guy sends me a message
- 49:37being like hey man don't mean to bother you but it was like a
- 49:41fucking essay of a thing. Doesn't matter.
- 49:44He goes. I was planning on killing myself
- 49:45today and I was taking a shit this morning to have my whole
- 49:51day planned out of exactly how I was going to do it.
- 49:54I had letters pre written and ready to go, but on the toilet I
- 49:58got doom scrolling on your page and laughed at like a bunch of
- 50:03videos and I totally forgot to go and kill myself.
- 50:07And I was like, all right, that's sick.
- 50:10And he was like, yeah, he's like I I like my plan was to get up
- 50:14and go to like Home Depot and buy stuff.
- 50:17You know what I mean? He's like, I was going to go and
- 50:18like execute this plan that I had.
- 50:21But when I got off the shooter, like I just started my day like
- 50:23a normal day. Like I, I laughed, I got up and
- 50:25then just like unconsciously made a coffee and then made
- 50:28breakfast and then went to the gym.
- 50:29Like, and like, it hit me while I was at the gym that, like, I
- 50:33didn't kill myself today because I got sucked into your videos.
- 50:37Wow. And I was like, it's pretty
- 50:39powerful. Oh, dude, it blew me away.
- 50:40I was like, OK, this is a message that, like, I put on my
- 50:44wall. And when my dad says you're a
- 50:46loser, I go, yeah, yeah. Have you stopped anybody?
- 50:52No, but like have you prevented suicide today?
- 50:54Yeah, you have never. So you probably encouraged it by
- 50:57a few people at your work. You know, that I think you suck,
- 51:00but no, but I like, I've gotten quite a few messages like that,
- 51:04not that detailed, quite a few people being like, hey, I've
- 51:07been in a dark place. Your videos helped me out,
- 51:10whatever, you know? So that's half the reason why I
- 51:12do what I do. And those moments when things
- 51:16are in a dark place or whatever, you're like, OK, A, I'm grateful
- 51:20that I do what I like to do in the 1st place.
- 51:23B It helps a lot of people see a lot of people feel inspired for
- 51:28some reason. And I that sounds like the most
- 51:30egotistical thing I've ever said.
- 51:32But like I stumbled in on a conversation at STL, actually at
- 51:35our old high school and like the teachers were using me as an
- 51:39example of like monetizing something that you're interested
- 51:43in and turning it into a career and like things take time and
- 51:47whatever. Just using me as an example of a
- 51:49road less traveled, if you will, as if I'm like some great
- 51:52success story and I'm like, I live with my none the dude.
- 51:56Don't listen to these guys, whatever, you know, and like as
- 51:59much as I joked about it, I was like, I was blown away that
- 52:02like, you know, a lot of these kids followed me, their families
- 52:06friend, like follow me and family and friends follow me.
- 52:08And so like, I don't know, I was just blown away by that.
- 52:11And I was like, OK, when shit gets tough, it could be so much
- 52:14fucking worse. Like, you see what you open up
- 52:16your Instagram in the last two weeks, you're like, it's crazy
- 52:20how many people are dying and going through the craziest shit
- 52:22on the planet. So the fact that I'm at The Keg
- 52:25at midnight in Montreal and their kitchen is staying open
- 52:29for us because they're fans or they came to the show.
- 52:34What the fuck am I complaining about?
- 52:36You know what I mean? Yeah, you're like, life is
- 52:38great, so I can't complain. I have a podcast, buddy.
- 52:43I'm done to complain and rant all day long, which is my
- 52:47therapy. Nice.
- 52:48I also have had a life coach and multiple therapists over the
- 52:52years, so you know what I mean. There you go, talking to people
- 52:54and listening to music, drowning myself home.
- 52:57Have you answered that quickly? You answered that very well.
- 53:01So yeah, I do. Hope so, my God.
- 53:06I I I'm being honest when I say like, I don't laugh out loud a
- 53:10lot at Instagram videos, but whenever I watch yours,
- 53:12especially the nono stuff, because it's so relatable.
- 53:15I think so relatable. A lot of comedy is like, can the
- 53:18audience relate to what I'm what I'm saying?
- 53:20For sure could do they yeah, me too.
- 53:23Like and dude, that's me too. That's hilarious.
- 53:27But I that's all of it. Like there's a stupid movie.
- 53:31I can't believe I'm going to reference this.
- 53:33There's a movie called August Rush.
- 53:34Have you seen that? No.
- 53:36Is it August Rush? Gold I.
- 53:39Think it's called August Rush? Should I watch it?
- 53:42No. Yeah.
- 53:43It's OK. It's about a kid who's like a
- 53:45musical genius, whatever, and he makes music based off the sounds
- 53:48he has like a hyper hearing disability.
- 53:51But like he's in like he's sitting on the subway train and
- 53:54he's like listening to traffic and like noises and he notices
- 53:58that they go in patterns and rhythms and then creates music
- 54:00out of it. And this whole thing is like the
- 54:03music's all around us. Comedy's the exact same way.
- 54:06We're like, I'll go through something and I'm like, I know
- 54:10because this is literally everything.
- 54:11I know that 9000 other people have gone through this exact
- 54:15thing. It's all been talked about.
- 54:17And like you, I noticed that when I got married and I had a
- 54:20kid, specifically when I got married, when I got married, so
- 54:23many things fell into place with like other comments when I would
- 54:27watch comedy before I got married about guys talking about
- 54:30their wives. Like all the premises are like
- 54:32the same 10 premises really. And they're all taking their
- 54:36take on it. And you like you can listen to
- 54:38comics from like the 50s, dude. Like you listen to Richard Pryor
- 54:41talk about marriage and kids. You're like, I'm going through
- 54:45this exact same thing. Do you know what I mean?
- 54:46So it's all relatable. Everyone has family, everyone's
- 54:49got a grandfather, grandmother, whatever, you know what I mean?
- 54:51It's like the more I don't know, people are like, I struggle with
- 54:55finding content or what to do. I'm like, what did you do today?
- 54:58Did you stub your toe getting out of bed Good. 10 million
- 55:01people have done that. Start with that.
- 55:03Start with that. Like.
- 55:04It's just it's all around you at all times.
- 55:06You just have to find a way to display it.
- 55:10In in your perspective, I don't know if you've ever read Rick
- 55:12Rubin's book Creative Way. He talks about that a lot and I
- 55:16love it. I'm reading it right now.
- 55:17I'm like halfway through. He talks about like, we're all
- 55:19kind of this like. Yeah, nothing's been done.
- 55:22Just. Experiencing and everything
- 55:24you've ever done has been done. Before, Yeah, sorry,
- 55:25everything's been done and nothing's.
- 55:27New and nothing's new. And you, it's just you're
- 55:29putting your perspective on it. What you're creating is not for
- 55:31the audience, it's for you. And you're just taking in the
- 55:33world and then regurgitating it. It's it's so true.
- 55:36Your content is all around you. You know your inspiration is all
- 55:39around you, right? I can't listen to him talk much
- 55:43so his. Audio book.
- 55:44I listen to the audio book. I didn't read the book book
- 55:46because I'll never get through it, but like I was listening to
- 55:48his audio book. I hate when it's the guy I know.
- 55:51Like really? I used to love that.
- 55:53Yeah, you hate when it's the guy reading his own book.
- 55:55Yeah, because I'm like, this sounds so much more pretentious.
- 55:57Or they'll try to read it. Yeah, yeah, A.
- 56:00Reader, I'm like, no, man, you don't sound like that, you know,
- 56:03because I listen to him in interviews and I love it.
- 56:05I've watched every Rick Rubin interview ever.
- 56:07But then in his audio book, I'm like, OK, dude, stop narrating
- 56:10Harry Potter here. Like, you're killing me.
- 56:12Like, you know what? Like, you just end up putting me
- 56:14to bed, you know? So I try to like, you know, when
- 56:17they do it. Like I think Jordan Peterson
- 56:19does that too. Where he tries to read his own
- 56:22kind of in, in the way that you that he thinks it should be
- 56:24read. Yeah, and I know that's the
- 56:26point, but like have some like, you know, some British guy who
- 56:30was just like, you know, just I was walking down the street and
- 56:32I know just like whatever, you know, you have to shit.
- 56:35Oh, you don't have to. Just saying like all together.
- 56:38Oh, OK, OK. Yeah, I'm good.
- 56:39I don't give a shit. I'll do stuff to the camera
- 56:42myself. What else do I do about mental
- 56:47health? Talk to people on the phone.
- 56:54I doom scroll, man. Fuck.
- 56:57Scrolling is one of those things that really just gets you.
- 57:02You ever noticed that where you're like you're scrolling and
- 57:05all of a sudden it's like an hour and a half later?
- 57:07You ever dropped the phone on your face?
- 57:10What a fuck. That's when I know I'm like,
- 57:12you're not in bed. You're going to bed and you're
- 57:15like elbow and like hands go numb completely and you're like,
- 57:20wow, I've been doing this for two hours.
- 57:22But it's it's the same thing as going to the moves.
- 57:23Like, you just feel like, OK, let me find something to either
- 57:28learn or laugh at. Like I don't go to bed until
- 57:31I've like laughed out loud because there's some nights,
- 57:33dude, you try to replicate it every night.
- 57:35Like I'll be scrolling and I'll find something that makes me
- 57:40laugh harder than I've laughed in like a month.
- 57:43Then the next night you're like, OK, I got to find that again.
- 57:47Or you watch the same meme dude. You ever watch the same meme
- 57:50over and over again? I watch this one meme dude where
- 57:53like this guy comes, his wife and him are taking the dog for a
- 57:57walk and then he trips over the dog and falls into the fucking
- 58:02garden and like crashes the garden table over.
- 58:05It's one of the funniest things ever and he's like sham it.
- 58:09You ever seen that? No, I'm talking to the camera
- 58:11about other ways. Talking to the audience.
- 58:13Talking to the audience about how I cope with things, I was
- 58:16saying doom scrolling is one of those things.
- 58:18Yeah, that's a, that's a rough one because hours will go by and
- 58:21you just. Hours.
- 58:22Yeah, but like I was saying, like, I love it when you find a
- 58:24gem. Like I'll find something where I
- 58:25laugh at it. Yeah, harder than I've laughed
- 58:27all month. Yeah.
- 58:28So then that's like the next night I'm like fuck I hope I
- 58:31find a fucking gem dude. You know you're like addicted to
- 58:34the the next laugh, right? You're like, it has to be
- 58:36better. That's my whole career, dude.
- 58:39Yeah, my career in a nutshell. Wait, you?
- 58:42You mean you you'd want to find a gem for yourself?
- 58:45No, I want to find a gym to like, laugh.
- 58:47I laugh harder. Yeah, yeah, but my career in a
- 58:49nutshell is the next laugh. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 58:52It's a good comedy name. Like that on your shirt?
- 58:54No. Yeah.
- 58:55It's a good comedy album. Yeah, there.
- 58:57You go. You're welcome the.
- 58:58Last laugh, the next laugh. Yeah, and when you're famous,
- 59:00you can all tribute to recovering a Loud podcast.
- 59:02Oh, 100. Percent, yeah.
- 59:04You know who you look like? You kind of look like a.
- 59:07Fergie's boyfriend. Who?
- 59:10Who's that? Josh Duhamel.
- 59:14No, I. See, I've been, I've been told
- 59:16that before, but also I think I'm better than I am, so.
- 59:20You look like like if your brother was an alcoholic it
- 59:27would be Strombo George Strombo Lavas.
- 59:29Oh yeah, like an older brother, Yeah.
- 59:31Like Strombo could easily be your older brother that used to
- 59:34just bully the shit out of you and like.
- 59:36Well, he's doing well so. He's doing really well, but he
- 59:38looks like he's. Been strung out?
- 59:41Yeah, yeah, yeah. He looks like unfortunate
- 59:43because I don't think he ever was.
- 59:44No, sorry, George, if you're watching this, he follows me.
- 59:46We've chatted before. George, listen, I don't think
- 59:50that you look like that, all right?
- 59:51I'm just saying it's. OK, he'll never see this, don't
- 59:53worry. He'll see it.
- 59:54I'm going to make him. I'm going to send this to him.
- 59:56Don't clip this out. Yeah, I don't, I don't think.
- 1:00:01Thank you though. That's a compliment.
- 1:00:02He's a good looking guy. Yeah, and if I could be half as
- 1:00:06popular, no wrong word. If I could be half as successful
- 1:00:09as him, I'd be happy. I don't want to be popular.
- 1:00:11I don't like limelight. I don't, but a part of me does.
- 1:00:15It's. Such a weird balance because
- 1:00:17it's like it goes hand in hand. It's like, well, if you're
- 1:00:21popular, you'll get all the other things, you know what I
- 1:00:24mean, that come with it that you probably want.
- 1:00:26Yeah, it should be a bonus, right?
- 1:00:27It should be a a result, you know?
- 1:00:29Do you get noticed in public? It's ridiculous really, eh?
- 1:00:33I hate I that was the worst, like the most egotistical answer
- 1:00:36ever, but like it's it's great to.
- 1:00:38Be honest so. It's quite a bit.
- 1:00:40I'm grateful, but also sometimes it's like you're at the kids
- 1:00:44park waiting for me. Yeah, that's crazy.
- 1:00:46So what do they want? Like a selfie or?
- 1:00:48Yeah. Which is fine.
- 1:00:49Like I don't. I love meeting everybody.
- 1:00:50I'm blown away that it even happened.
- 1:00:52Yeah, I know. Like.
- 1:00:52Like, it's insane. It's like I feel like I'm a
- 1:00:54nobody and I don't think I'm anybody at all.
- 1:00:58But it's like especially when I'm with people who've known me
- 1:01:01forever and they and it happens, they're like, what the fuck is
- 1:01:03this? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:04I'm like, I know, dude. It's ridiculous.
- 1:01:06Like I'll be at the mall with my kids and like someone will see
- 1:01:08my kid and notice my kid. Jesus.
- 1:01:11Yeah, they'll be like, Oh my God.
- 1:01:12Oh, and see my wife and I'm like, is your husband here?
- 1:01:15Like my wife has been getting noticed, she tells me.
- 1:01:17And I'm like, what the fuck? You're not in anything, you
- 1:01:20know. This isn't what I wanted.
- 1:01:21Yeah, and I mean, like, it's fine, dude.
- 1:01:23Like, I love it. Again, it all goes back to that
- 1:01:27DM dude. It's like for them, dude, it's
- 1:01:29changing their day. They're excited to meet me just
- 1:01:32because I make videos. Like incredible, dude.
- 1:01:34Like, it's incredible. Yeah, that's great, man.
- 1:01:37If you could, if you could say something to a, you know, a
- 1:01:40comic that's just starting out or a creator or somebody that
- 1:01:44you know is struggling right now with with where they're going to
- 1:01:47go next with their career and what they're going to do.
- 1:01:49They want to do this full time. What would you say to that
- 1:01:51person? In comedy specifically.
- 1:01:52Or, or any general, but yeah, let do comedy because I think
- 1:01:56that's pretty unique. And don't do it, buddy.
- 1:02:00Yeah, turn around. Yeah.
- 1:02:03No, no, do it. Don't take it too seriously
- 1:02:07'cause you have to have fun. You know what I mean?
- 1:02:09When people take it too seriously and they're too in the
- 1:02:11weeds of things, like they're like get too.
- 1:02:15You get lost in the minutia of things.
- 1:02:19Big word is it? I don't even know how to spell
- 1:02:21it. Yeah.
- 1:02:21Neither do I. Minutia.
- 1:02:23I'd ask tragedy to you. Talk to minutia anyways, so you
- 1:02:28just like I know, just have fun and don't take it too seriously.
- 1:02:30Sounds like the most like it sounds like a fucking Robin
- 1:02:32Williams book cover. Like do that.
- 1:02:36Like do that. Because if the audience is
- 1:02:38coming to see you and have fun, if you're not having fun, how
- 1:02:43are they supposed to have fun? If you take things too
- 1:02:46seriously, you won't progress. You know what I mean?
- 1:02:49Like, you can't. You got to let the haters roll
- 1:02:52off your back. If you have a bad set, it's got
- 1:02:55to roll off your back. You have to do the next one.
- 1:02:58Like you just can't, you know, don't.
- 1:03:00You're a comedian. Everything's a joke.
- 1:03:03That's the problem that we face with regular people.
- 1:03:07Let's call it non comms. That's what we call non comms.
- 1:03:10That's great. Yeah.
- 1:03:12Oh, I've never heard that. Yeah, non comms.
- 1:03:14The problem is we take we find the joke everywhere and we're
- 1:03:18like, that's a muscle you work at all the time.
- 1:03:21It's like let's find the funny everywhere.
- 1:03:23So like when I'm at a funeral and I'm laughing at something or
- 1:03:26like I can't compose myself or like I say a joke to my brother
- 1:03:29and he's fucking like vibrating next to me laughing to tears and
- 1:03:34people think he's crying. Like it gets you in trouble.
- 1:03:37But like, you know, that's the point, right?
- 1:03:38Like we're always trying to find that.
- 1:03:41So if you're taking things too seriously, you're you're going
- 1:03:44to limit yourself. So nice.
- 1:03:47Where can we find you, Mark? Everywhere and anywhere, baby at
- 1:03:51not Mark Anthony on all platforms.
- 1:03:53Mark with AC, not with AK. Yeah, don't.
- 1:03:56Fuck that up. Don't.
- 1:03:57Fuck that up. But if you type it in with AK,
- 1:03:58it will still come up, which is great.
- 1:03:59So, yeah, Mark anthony.com. Any shows coming up?
- 1:04:04Nah dude, not. Yet.
- 1:04:06I got a big tour coming up in the fall, another big, it's
- 1:04:10coming up. I got a lot of things coming up
- 1:04:12like, but nothing like Set in Stone that I can release at the
- 1:04:15moment. So, but yeah, I'm always posting
- 1:04:18about stuff. So if you want to see me live
- 1:04:20there, I will be always promoting to see me.
- 1:04:24Beautiful dude. I appreciate you so much.
- 1:04:26Thanks for coming down. Appreciate you.
- 1:04:27It's hot as fuck. Thank you.
- 1:04:29You're a good dude. It's 38° in the studio guys, but
- 1:04:34it's actually shocking. Like it's, it's crazy because
- 1:04:36I'm not sweating much here, but like I'm going to get up.
- 1:04:38My back is going to be just. You're like a duck.
- 1:04:40It's all happening under the water.
- 1:04:42Everything looks good. Up to That's hilarious.
- 1:04:44But everything but you're fuck. Yeah, that seems like an analogy
- 1:04:47at a mental health place. How'd you know?
- 1:04:49It has to be, yeah. Everything's OK except I'm
- 1:04:51drinking like crazy and I can't stop smoking meth.
- 1:04:54Meth dude guys listen. Like, comment, subscribe.
