- 0:00Speaker 1: You're going to be hearing this a bit over the weekend.
- 0:01Speaker 1: It's Telethon weekend. It's going to be a.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Beautiful weekend for it too. It's that time of year.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Telethon is back and so is Matt Parkinson. Hello.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Hello. Great to be here.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Look, it's a homecoming for you. You get to come
- 0:16Speaker 2: home for Telethon.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Yes. Because you are, of course, from Perth. Grew up here, yes.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Grew up here.
- 0:20Speaker 2: We all went to Curtin Uni.
- 0:22Speaker 1: You won half of the Empty Pockets.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yes. And then over you went to Melbourne next minute.
- 0:28Speaker 2: You're promoting an album on South Century. Fast forward a
- 0:33Speaker 2: little bit of time and you are the original on
- 0:37Speaker 2: the chase.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Now I'm doing this really. I'm answering questions on television.
- 0:42Speaker 3: And mucking around at the same time and having fun
- 0:44Speaker 3: with Larry Emder. I can't quite work it out. I'm
- 0:46Speaker 3: waiting for the white goods to be wheeled out at
- 0:47Speaker 3: some stage. When do we go to the gift shop?
- 0:51Speaker 2: He seems, I hope that what you see is what
- 0:53Speaker 2: you get with Larry because he seems like one of
- 0:55Speaker 2: the nicest people on television.
- 0:56Speaker 1: He's a terrific bloke. He really is. He's been great
- 0:59Speaker 1: to work with on the show. He always is.
- 1:00Speaker 3: And I look forward to the opportunity to just come
- 1:02Speaker 3: out and sit down and start mucking around. And we're
- 1:05Speaker 3: always saying we want to have another show called The
- 1:08Speaker 3: Chase Up Late.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Oh, yes.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Because a lot of the stuff that we do on
- 1:12Speaker 3: the studio floor to get the mood happening is maybe
- 1:15Speaker 3: not suitable for the five-minute time slot.
- 1:16Speaker 1: That sounds like something I would watch. Well, surely there's
- 1:18Speaker 1: enough stuff edited out for a special at least. Oh, yeah.
- 1:22Speaker 1: At least.
- 1:23Speaker 3: We want public demand to come in and make them
- 1:25Speaker 3: do it because we know that a lot of our
- 1:26Speaker 3: best work is hitting the cutting room floor, so to speak.
- 1:29Speaker 1: It's the chaste. Yeah. That's what we call it. Now,
- 1:33Speaker 1: of course, growing up in Perth....
- 1:37Speaker 2: We grew up with telethon where it was the only
- 1:39Speaker 2: thing that was on overnight that once a year.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's the only time stations went 24 hours.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Yeah, when you get to our age, it's such a–
- 1:46Speaker 2: it is iconic. And I hate to overuse the word iconic,
- 1:49Speaker 2: but telethon is.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 1:51Speaker 2: So it is such a buzz to be involved with it,
- 1:54Speaker 2: isn't it, when you're from here and.
- 1:56Speaker 1: You do that?
- 1:56Speaker 3: So my first one, which I think was 2016 or something,
- 2:00Speaker 3: I was standing there in the phone room going, doing this.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I can't believe I'm doing this.
- 2:04Speaker 3: I felt like I should be calling up to talk
- 2:06Speaker 3: to myself in the phone room. And what's happened since
- 2:11Speaker 3: is in the 10 years that I've been on air
- 2:13Speaker 3: and Perth started to.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Expand, I used to know all the suburb names.
- 2:15Speaker 3: I used to be like, yeah, Nullamara, got that, no problem.
- 2:18Speaker 1: And now Coburn. You knew how to say Coburn. I
- 2:21Speaker 1: can say I'm a swan without laughing. Yes, Innaloo. Mandurah, yes, exactly.
- 2:27Speaker 3: And now there are so many more new suburbs that
- 2:30Speaker 3: I don't know how to pronounce, so I actually have
- 2:32Speaker 3: to do a bit.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Of homework sometimes. Don't feel too bad because even we
- 2:36Speaker 1: have trouble keeping up with them. They're growing so fast.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Even we make mistakes.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Do you think they'll get you to do anything– crazy.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I mean, you're Goliath. They're brave to take you on.
- 2:48Speaker 3: When you do your first telethon, you take an oath
- 2:51Speaker 3: that you will do whatever is required or asked of
- 2:54Speaker 3: you on the telethon weekend. That will happen tomorrow morning
- 2:56Speaker 3: for all the newbies who are doing their first telethon.
- 2:58Speaker 3: But once you take that pledge... It kind of lasts
- 3:01Speaker 3: for every year afterwards and it's understood that if you
- 3:04Speaker 3: are called on to do something for the right amount
- 3:06Speaker 3: of money, you'll go ahead and do it.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 3:08Speaker 3: And I, like you say, Lisa, it goes back. So
- 3:11Speaker 3: I have memories of staying up till, you know, one o'clock,
- 3:13Speaker 3: two o'clock in the morning.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Yes.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Just so that I could see, you know, people like
- 3:17Speaker 3: Stuart Wagstaff.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Get his shirt off. Smoking his, no, not just smoking,
- 3:21Speaker 1: smoking a cigarette. It was like, wow, somebody's smoking a
- 3:24Speaker 1: cigarette on the panel.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Bobby Lim and everyone.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Lined up without their shirts on. Graham Kennedy used to
- 3:29Speaker 1: come over. We talk about the first time you did it.
- 3:31Speaker 2: The first time I ever did it, I was in
- 3:33Speaker 2: the green room with Stuart Wagstaff, and I thought if
- 3:36Speaker 2: I could have told my eight-year-old self that this would
- 3:40Speaker 2: be happening, it was the greatest moment of my life. Now,
- 3:43Speaker 2: you've brought all the other chasers with you.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Yeah, we're here in full strength. We're happy about that.
- 3:47Speaker 1: You're full strength. Issa, everybody loves Issa.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Yes.
- 3:52Speaker 1: That's because they feel like they could– put him in
- 3:54Speaker 1: their pocket and take him home. They want to.
- 3:56Speaker 3: No one feels that way about me. Everyone's like, oh, Goliath.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Has he actually ever gone missing? Yeah.
- 4:03Speaker 3: No, we actually have to keep a very close eye
- 4:06Speaker 3: on him because he has some very devoted fans who,
- 4:09Speaker 3: if they get hold of him, he's going to be
- 4:11Speaker 3: in their basement forever.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Pop him in their pocket. He'd be the.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Politest hostage ever.
- 4:17Speaker 1: He would. Thank you so much for abducting me. It's
- 4:20Speaker 1: lovely in this country. It really is lovely. He really
- 4:22Speaker 1: is a nice man. What got you hooked on this whole,
- 4:25Speaker 1: you know, trivia and quiz shows? Because obviously you're exceptionally
- 4:29Speaker 1: good at it. What's anything that... It started when I
- 4:33Speaker 1: was young.
- 4:34Speaker 3: And look, we're doing a school play in maybe grade
- 4:37Speaker 3: two or grade three.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Well, not a school play, like a class play.
- 4:40Speaker 3: We're doing this little play and it called on somebody
- 4:43Speaker 3: to recite a very long list, to come out and
- 4:45Speaker 3: kind of just recite this long.
- 4:47Speaker 1: It was literally a laundry list. of things that you'd
- 4:52Speaker 1: use for cleaning somebody up.
- 4:53Speaker 3: And I was the only one in the class who
- 4:55Speaker 3: could remember this list from way to go. So I
- 4:59Speaker 3: got the role and I don't know where that came from.
- 5:02Speaker 3: I mean, my father was a teacher and my mum
- 5:04Speaker 3: was a librarian. So we were kind of, uh, we
- 5:07Speaker 3: were not a serious bookish house, but, but I can
- 5:10Speaker 3: see how that kind of fed into the ability to
- 5:13Speaker 3: kind of, you know, remember what you're reading and, Keep
- 5:16Speaker 3: facts in your head and everything. But it was that,
- 5:17Speaker 3: that jump, that is the one single jumping off point
- 5:20Speaker 3: that I can put it down to is at that
- 5:22Speaker 3: point I became, oh, I.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Can remember things. I'm good at remembering things. Right.
- 5:26Speaker 3: And ever since then, I've always been, you know, you
- 5:28Speaker 3: have that person in your social group who everyone's talking
- 5:31Speaker 3: about a film or whatever, and they can't remember the
- 5:33Speaker 3: actor's name.
- 5:34Speaker 1: And you go, oh yeah, it's Jesse Plemons. Oh, how
- 5:36Speaker 1: did you remember that? That's, I've always been that person.
- 5:39Speaker 1: And Lisa.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:40Speaker 1: You're like that. You're that person, sure, are you? I
- 5:41Speaker 1: am a little bit like that.
- 5:42Speaker 2: I've got a head for, well, you retain, you know,
- 5:45Speaker 2: sort of important things. I just retain all the sort
- 5:47Speaker 2: of the nonsense, the pop culture stuff.
- 5:49Speaker 1: But here's the thing on the chase. It's all important.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:52Speaker 1: It can all come out of nowhere. Yeah, that's true.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Suddenly it's really important to know what the name of,
- 5:55Speaker 3: you know, Kim Kardashian's third child is.
- 5:57Speaker 1: It becomes a crucial thing. Some.
- 5:59Speaker 2: I watch every night. I do watch every night. And
- 6:04Speaker 2: I would love to go on the show, but I
- 6:06Speaker 2: just fear that I'd be that person who I'd get there.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Freeze. Yes.
- 6:10Speaker 2: And just be, I'd just be frozen.
- 6:13Speaker 3: That really moves me because I can see that sometimes.
- 6:15Speaker 3: People step to the bottom of that big board.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:18Speaker 3: And you can see that even though they're their pub
- 6:20Speaker 3: quiz champion, they're suddenly thinking.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Oh, my God, everyone's watching me. Yeah. Oh, what if
- 6:24Speaker 1: I get one wrong?
- 6:25Speaker 3: And I don't have a minute to go down to
- 6:28Speaker 3: the bottom of the board and say, relax, just relax
- 6:31Speaker 3: your brain. What I've learned in 10 years of doing it,
- 6:32Speaker 3: your brain works better when you're relaxed.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Yes. Which is why everyone at home is.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Can sit there yelling, I know the answer to that.
- 6:41Speaker 1: You're not there. You're not in this.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Maybe we could do a quiz show in a new
- 6:46Speaker 3: format where people are streaming live from their couch.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Yeah, right.
- 6:49Speaker 2: And after a few wines or something.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Okay.
- 6:52Speaker 1: The answers will be wrong, but they'll be quick. As
- 6:55Speaker 1: long as I get a few lines in too, we're good.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Well, Telethon, of course, it starts 7 o'clock tomorrow night,
- 6:59Speaker 2: 26 hours of madness.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Lovely to have you in town. Terrific to be here
- 7:04Speaker 1: and honoured to be part of Telethon. And what time
- 7:05Speaker 1: are you taking the shirt off again? Well, it depends
- 7:08Speaker 1: how much money you're putting up there.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 7:10Speaker 1: All right, we'll dig into the piggy bank.
