- 0:00What is up, everyone? Happy Sunday.
- 0:03It is friendly. I'm so glad you're here.
- 0:06Whatever you're doing, wherever life finds you.
- 0:10I am so grateful that we get to open God's Word together.
- 0:13And today we're going to be reading from Matthew chapter 20
- 0:18through verses 20 through 28. And this is a passage called
- 0:22Jesus Teaches about Serving Others.
- 0:25But I do want to switch up the format a little bit before we
- 0:29read. I want to set up some context
- 0:31because I think it can really help you as I read this passage
- 0:34over you. So right before this moment,
- 0:37Jesus has foreshadowed his death for the third time.
- 0:41And he is clearly explaining the suffering, the rejection, and
- 0:46the crucifixion that is coming up.
- 0:49But the disciples, they are still so caught up in
- 0:52themselves. We see chapters prior, I think
- 0:55it's in chapter 18, that they are arguing over their positions
- 0:59and their future status and ultimately what they'll gain in
- 1:03the Kingdom. And The thing is, they're
- 1:06physically close to Jesus in this moment, but they're missing
- 1:10what he's trying to teach them. So with that in mind, I want to
- 1:13go into the passage that we're going to read today and just
- 1:17listen as I read these words over you.
- 1:19We're starting in verse 20. Then the mother of Zebedee's
- 1:22sons came to Jesus with her sons and kneeling down, asked a favor
- 1:28of him. What is it you want?
- 1:30He asked. She said.
- 1:32Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right
- 1:35and the other at your left in your Kingdom.
- 1:38You don't know what you're asking, Jesus said to them.
- 1:41Can you drink the cup? I'm going to drink?
- 1:44We can't, they answered. Jesus said to them, You will
- 1:48indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not
- 1:52for me to grant. These places belong to those for
- 1:55whom they have been prepared by my Father.
- 1:58When the 10 heard about this, they were indignant with the two
- 2:01brothers. Jesus called them together and
- 2:04said, You know that the rulers of the Gentiles Lord it over
- 2:07them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.
- 2:11Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become
- 2:16great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be
- 2:20first must be your slave. Just as the Son of Man did not
- 2:24come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom
- 2:29for many. OK, so after reading this it
- 2:34really stood out to me how possible it is to walk closely
- 2:38with Jesus to hear his words. Here we are reading the very God
- 2:43breathed scriptures, but it's possible to still miss the heart
- 2:48of his message when our focus is inward and on ourselves.
- 2:52And truthfully, I do not want that for myself or for us today.
- 2:56So before we go any further, I want to pause and pray in the
- 3:00beginning of this podcast instead of at the end and just
- 3:03ask the Lord to help us not miss what He wants to show us.
- 3:08So Lord, we come before you this morning.
- 3:11We ask that you would not let us miss what you want to teach us
- 3:15today. Would you open up our eyes that
- 3:18they may see what You want to show us?
- 3:21Open up our ears, tune them into your frequency, Holy Spirit,
- 3:27what you want us to hear? Would you soften and open up our
- 3:31hearts so that they are receptive to Your truth?
- 3:34We want to learn from You. We want to be challenged and we
- 3:38want to be changed. We ask this all in Your name,
- 3:41Jesus, Amen. OK, so going into this story,
- 3:45it's centered around the sons of Zebedee.
- 3:47This is James and John, and they are the second pair of brothers
- 3:52that Jesus calls while they're fishing on the Sea of Galilee.
- 3:55This is in the very beginning of Matthew, and we see here that
- 4:01their mother is approaching Jesus and she is making a very
- 4:04bold request on their behalf. She's asking that her sons can
- 4:08be seated in the Lord's Kingdom at his right and his left.
- 4:13But something interesting that I actually learned yesterday while
- 4:18studying these commentaries. My dad has these huge books, and
- 4:22I've always been so intimidated by them.
- 4:24But I was snowed in and I thought, you know what, We're
- 4:27going to crack them open. But I learned something so
- 4:30applicable for today. A lot of scholars believe that
- 4:35James and John's mother was present at the cross during
- 4:38Jesus crucifixion. One of the few women there, and
- 4:42she might have even been Mary's sister.
- 4:44So if that's true, this request could have been influenced by a
- 4:49close family connection. But I want us to notice her
- 4:53posture. She's kneeling before Jesus and
- 4:56typically a posture kneeling. A kneeling posture is usually
- 5:01humble. It's reverent and is seen as
- 5:04worship. But this raises an important
- 5:07question. What were her motives?
- 5:10Because her posture it looked right but her request was very
- 5:15self focused. And as I was reading this story,
- 5:18God brought to mind James 4/2 through three, which I will
- 5:22clarify that this is not the same James writing this verse as
- 5:26it is in this story. But he says you do not have
- 5:30because you do not ask God. And when you ask, you do not
- 5:34receive because you ask with wrong motives that you may spend
- 5:38what you get on your pleasures. So with that verse in mind, this
- 5:44passage, it's inviting us to examine our own hearts.
- 5:47Y'all, what is at the root of our worship?
- 5:51Are we kneeling before Jesus because we simply adore him, or
- 5:56is it only because we want something from him?
- 5:58Do we go to church? Do we pray, practice these
- 6:02spiritual disciplines when it's convenient for us, or when we
- 6:06need healing or a special favor or breakthrough?
- 6:10Because true genuine worship, it adores Jesus for who he is and
- 6:15for what he's already done. Now I want to be clear,
- 6:19Scripture does not discourage us from bringing our request to
- 6:22God. He actually invites us to.
- 6:25We see this all throughout the Bible.
- 6:27But a verse that the Lord brought to me was Philippians
- 6:304/6 through seven that says in every situation by prayer and
- 6:34petition with Thanksgiving, present your request to God.
- 6:39Y'all, God loves to bless his children.
- 6:42We know this. But here's the question I want
- 6:45us to consider. If God never answered another
- 6:49prayer of yours, would he still be worthy of your praise?
- 6:54Would your worship reflect that he has already done more than
- 6:58enough? It's an intense question, but
- 7:01it's one that we need to sit with.
- 7:04And so in this passage, Jesus responds to James and John by
- 7:08talking about the cup. In this cup, it's representing
- 7:11his coming suffering and crucifixion that he's going to
- 7:15endure. They say they can drink it, but
- 7:18they do not yet understand the weight of what they're asking.
- 7:23And James, he would later be martyred and killed for his
- 7:26faith. John was exiled.
- 7:28So no doubt about it, they both suffered deeply for Jesus, but
- 7:33neither could endure what Christ would bear on behalf of all of
- 7:36us. So this part really challenged,
- 7:39challenged me personally. I had to ask myself, OK, how
- 7:44many times have I asked God for something and in that moment
- 7:49maybe gotten frustrated or really challenged him?
- 7:53Like why are you not giving this to me right now?
- 7:55Why am I having to wait if I feel ready or if I feel like
- 7:59this is a good request or desire?
- 8:01But here's the thing, sometimes we don't realize that we don't
- 8:05fully understand what we're asking for because only God can
- 8:08see what's ahead. The preparation that needs to
- 8:11happen in US first, What pain or danger might come with that
- 8:16answered prayer, or possibly how a delay is actually protecting
- 8:20us. I truly believe this saying that
- 8:23I'm about to give to y'all. It's kind of cliche, but I stand
- 8:27by it because I just think it is amazing.
- 8:30God's rejection is God's redirection.
- 8:33So closed doors, waiting seasons, they're not meant to
- 8:37hurt you. They might be meant to refine
- 8:40you, but they're for your good. God desires your long term
- 8:45flourishing, not just instant gratification.
- 8:49So this made me think back personally to relationships in
- 8:53my own life that maybe did not work out and at the time,
- 8:56surrendering my will to God. It was really hard.
- 9:00It was painful in the moment. It wasn't necessarily what I
- 9:04wanted right then. But as I look back, I can
- 9:07confidently say that obedience was worth it laying down what I
- 9:13wanted. It was just what I needed.
- 9:17And I would not be where I am in my faith or my relationship with
- 9:21God if I had chosen my own way instead of choosing His.
- 9:25And Jesus models surrender perfectly.
- 9:29He lives fully submitted to His Father's will.
- 9:32He's under his authority. He's obedient to His Father,
- 9:35even unto death. So may we imitate His example in
- 9:39everything, guys, This passage, it also reveals something
- 9:44superhuman, selfish ambition. And we see so many verses all
- 9:48throughout Scripture warning us from it.
- 9:51But then we see right here, the disciples, like I touched on in
- 9:55the beginning, they're so focused on their own image and
- 9:58status, what they could gain, that they miss out on Jesus and
- 10:02what he's trying to tell them right then.
- 10:04And Jesus flips everything upside down when he's teaching
- 10:08them, because in God's Kingdom, the greatest is the servant of
- 10:12all. Authority does not come from
- 10:15status or a special privilege. It comes from serving God and
- 10:19the people all around you. So this gives us a completely
- 10:23new perspective because we're called to be servant leaders, to
- 10:28be people who do not put ourselves on a pedestal or above
- 10:32anyone, to be people who honor and celebrate those around us
- 10:37who don't wait to be asked to do something but are actually eager
- 10:40to serve and jump on it. And Jesus, as he's embodying
- 10:45this, it is just so profound. So instead of asking, what can I
- 10:53get? Why don't we flip that and say
- 10:57how can I bless or how can I give today?
- 11:00So just a challenge and a prayer that I would love for y'all to
- 11:05keep in mind. It's something I have been
- 11:07trying to be more consistent about.
- 11:09Praying every day is wherever you go, whenever you walk into a
- 11:14room, whether it's your home, your workplace, a coffee shop, a
- 11:19gym, anywhere. Ask God to show you ways that
- 11:23you can serve instead of being so focused on what you can get
- 11:27out of something or someone. Because to look more like Jesus,
- 11:31to be made more into his image, this takes going out of our ways
- 11:35to serve. This is the kind of love that
- 11:38stands out because it's countercultural.
- 11:42It's not what everybody does in this world.
- 11:45And through these actions and how we live as a servant leader,
- 11:50it draws people to him because it's so unlike the world.
- 11:54It's so supernatural, like there is no good in US apart from
- 11:58Jesus, so we can only give Him the credit whenever we are able
- 12:03to be servant leaders. So I want to close today by
- 12:07reading a special passage of scripture that I came across
- 12:11yesterday morning. It's first Thessalonians 3,
- 12:14verses 12 through 13 in the Passion translation.
- 12:18So I pray it blesses y'all, and may the Lord increase your love
- 12:23until it overflows toward one another and for all people, just
- 12:28as our love overflows toward you.
- 12:31Then your hearts will be strengthened in holiness so that
- 12:34you may be flawless and pure before God our Father when our
- 12:39Lord Jesus appears again with all his holy ones.
- 12:43OK, well I loved getting to talk through all this today, guys.
- 12:47I pray that the Lord ministers to your heart and that y'all
- 12:51have a wonderful rest of your Sunday.
- 12:52I'll see y'all in the next episode.
