- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with the Yukon men's basketball coach to show Mike
- 0:02Speaker 1: chris Pino joined by Dan Hurley. Three games of six
- 0:05Speaker 1: days coming up, coach, couple on the road this week,
- 0:08Speaker 1: then you get three or four at home four of
- 0:10Speaker 1: the next six. How do you assess what this little
- 0:13Speaker 1: stretch is in terms of the importance to the season.
- 0:16Speaker 2: I couldn't even tell you because I I, by accident
- 0:21Speaker 2: find out who the next game is. I have no
- 0:24Speaker 2: idea who I'm playing three games out. I have a
- 0:27Speaker 2: vague idea of who the next opponent is depending on
- 0:31Speaker 2: the timeline. But I think a lot of our success is,
- 0:37Speaker 2: you know, we play these one game seasons where we
- 0:39Speaker 2: just completely lock in on the next opponent, whether that's
- 0:43Speaker 2: home road Excel gamble, you know, one of our two
- 0:47Speaker 2: home sites, or whether we're on the road. I think
- 0:51Speaker 2: we just we invest so much in just trying to
- 0:53Speaker 2: beat Providence on Sunday at two o'clock, and then you know,
- 0:58Speaker 2: once we've we've maximiz every opportunity we have in our
- 1:01Speaker 2: preparation and fought with life or death urgency to win
- 1:06Speaker 2: that basketball game, we'll turn our attention to obviously the
- 1:10Speaker 2: Villanova game. But I definitely don't know who we play
- 1:14Speaker 2: after Villanova, and I really don't want you to tell me.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Okay, I will not tell you. I'll follow the rules
- 1:21Speaker 1: on this one. We got to get it too. Liam McNeely,
- 1:23Speaker 1: he's had such a great freshman season, but he came
- 1:25Speaker 1: up lame on a sprained ankle twelve minutes to go
- 1:28Speaker 1: with de Paul. First of all, adjusting to a guy
- 1:31Speaker 1: not being there like him, how did you make that
- 1:35Speaker 1: happen as a team, because that wasn't easy. He does
- 1:37Speaker 1: a lot of everything for Yukon.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say, you know, probably next to Cooper Flag,
- 1:43Speaker 2: you know, for a team that's winning, and you know,
- 1:45Speaker 2: for a team that's basically a top ten type of
- 1:48Speaker 2: team like we are, even though our ranked eleventh. You know,
- 1:52Speaker 2: he's I don't think there's a team in the country
- 1:55Speaker 2: or a player in the country as a freshman that's
- 1:58Speaker 2: being asked to do more for his team, and Liam
- 2:01Speaker 2: is for a team that's contending for things, and in
- 2:04Speaker 2: the mix that way, I think, uh, you know, maybe
- 2:07Speaker 2: next to Cooper or with Cooper, you know we need
- 2:10Speaker 2: uh you know, he's given us two way play. He's
- 2:12Speaker 2: our second leading rebounder, he's in the paint getting to
- 2:16Speaker 2: the line. He's he's, he's he's facilitating and creating opportunities
- 2:20Speaker 2: for his teammates, his his centers, and his and his
- 2:23Speaker 2: and his three point shooters and uh and he's he's
- 2:26Speaker 2: had to drag us to a win at home versus
- 2:28Speaker 2: Baylor and and do the same verse Gonzaga at MSG
- 2:32Speaker 2: and uh. He's played well beyond his years, So losing
- 2:36Speaker 2: him there really hurt because of his usage rate and
- 2:39Speaker 2: the fact that he's a two way player and a
- 2:41Speaker 2: and a rebounder. So you know a lot of stuff
- 2:44Speaker 2: that we do offensively is for him. So in game, Uh,
- 2:49Speaker 2: I didn't realize it probably was, you know, I heard
- 2:52Speaker 2: it as bad as he did hurt it because he
- 2:55Speaker 2: walked off the court. I actually turned to Kamani at
- 2:58Speaker 2: one point and said, is he is Liam coming back?
- 3:02Speaker 2: And and he looked like, what are you crazy?
- 3:04Speaker 1: Uh?
- 3:05Speaker 2: You know, like it's it's it's not a great sprain.
- 3:08Speaker 2: So yeah, losing him, uh was was jarring. And then
- 3:12Speaker 2: Hassan getting in foul trouble too right away was like,
- 3:15Speaker 2: you know, like right on top of each other, we're
- 3:18Speaker 2: two very negative things.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Yeah, Mahani actually helped out there to sixteen minutes of
- 3:22Speaker 1: game right, three buckets had four cis I mean you
- 3:26Speaker 1: like you said, and listen, Tom Thibodel was talking about
- 3:29Speaker 1: this with the NIXT the other day. We got to
- 3:31Speaker 1: if guys are out, we got to figure it out.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Who is going to help us tonight. Who is going
- 3:35Speaker 1: to help us win this game tonight? And that's really
- 3:37Speaker 1: all that matters.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, we've been in a situation before. We've
- 3:41Speaker 2: you know, Alex missed the Baylor game. You know, Samson
- 3:45Speaker 2: missed the Samson missed the Big East opener. You know,
- 3:48Speaker 2: Donovan miss missed time last year, significant time, Steph Castle missed, uh,
- 3:53Speaker 2: you know, significant time. You know, Andre Jackson has missed
- 3:57Speaker 2: time through you know, we've dealt with this with with players,
- 4:02Speaker 2: uh and and I think you know, for us, it's uh,
- 4:05Speaker 2: it's an opportunity for however it turns out with Liam
- 4:09Speaker 2: in terms of time he'll miss, uh. You know, it
- 4:12Speaker 2: gives Aid Mahaney a chance right now to you know,
- 4:15Speaker 2: to to give us even more than he's given us
- 4:17Speaker 2: in games like Baylor or you know, or you know,
- 4:21Speaker 2: apt Butler or or or the game at DePaul where
- 4:24Speaker 2: he really helped us win those games. Jayden Ross Jalen
- 4:27Speaker 2: Stewart like, come on, man, give us even more right
- 4:30Speaker 2: now and get and get better. And whatever time that
- 4:33Speaker 2: Liam misses, We've got to find a way to win
- 4:37Speaker 2: enough games. Uh, win enough games so that where our
- 4:42Speaker 2: seasons where we want it. But now it also gives
- 4:45Speaker 2: us a chance to develop and get more out of
- 4:47Speaker 2: people so that when Liam does come back, he's returning
- 4:50Speaker 2: to a stronger, deeper team with more people playing. Well.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and you can't really as a coach or program
- 4:57Speaker 1: determine when he comes back. You know, you can't push
- 5:00Speaker 1: a guy. You can't say, Okay, get out there, we
- 5:02Speaker 1: need you. You really can't do that. You've really got
- 5:05Speaker 1: to find a way with what you have on your
- 5:06Speaker 1: roster to win these games, especially on the road. You've
- 5:10Speaker 1: got Villanova and another one after that. So, uh that
- 5:13Speaker 1: that puts you in a in a situation where you
- 5:15Speaker 1: really you're you're really testing your own roster.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Everyone's going through it. I mean, you know, Xavier, everyone
- 5:23Speaker 2: deals with injuries. Obviously, you uh, you would prefer it
- 5:27Speaker 2: to not be uh, you know, the your your most
- 5:30Speaker 2: impactful players, you know, and but everyone's dealing with it.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Everyone deals with it. Uh. You know, we've been very
- 5:37Speaker 2: fortunate here. We've had you know, we've been a healthy
- 5:40Speaker 2: program for the most part the last couple of years.
- 5:43Speaker 2: It's been a big reason why we've been able to
- 5:45Speaker 2: win it. But you know, I think right now, you uh,
- 5:49Speaker 2: there's enough talented people that uh, you've got to make
- 5:52Speaker 2: adjustments as a coach and find another way, uh, you know,
- 5:56Speaker 2: to play on Sunday to be successful. If if Liam
- 6:01Speaker 2: is not going to be available, all.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Right, coach final thought, quickly providence. They come in losing
- 6:05Speaker 1: three in a row, four or five, they're gonna be desperate.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Uh.
- 6:09Speaker 1: And they're coming in there and they don't like the Yukon.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yukon doesn't like them. What do you expect from them?
- 6:15Speaker 2: I mean, you're definitely expecting, uh, you know, a life
- 6:18Speaker 2: or death urgency and desperation that they will also be experiencing,
- 6:25Speaker 2: you know, with us as well. I just think that's uh,
- 6:28Speaker 2: that's what you get in in these games in the
- 6:31Speaker 2: Big East. I think you could throw out net rankings
- 6:34Speaker 2: and uh Ken palms and and uh you know, and
- 6:38Speaker 2: and and conference records when you get to Big East play,
- 6:42Speaker 2: because every game is every game is a it's a
- 6:45Speaker 2: barroom brawl. It's it's a you know, it's it's a
- 6:48Speaker 2: game filled with with great desperation. I think, you know,
- 6:53Speaker 2: they've got a tremendous backcourt really really you know, shoot it,
- 6:58Speaker 2: score it, really, guard the ball, you know, and I think, uh,
- 7:03Speaker 2: they're they're going to come in here, you know, whether
- 7:06Speaker 2: whether Hopkins plays or not for them, you know, the
- 7:10Speaker 2: feeling that you feel when you're not winning, Uh, you know,
- 7:14Speaker 2: it's tremendous fuel and desperation to go and and and uh,
- 7:18Speaker 2: you know, try to try to win one at at Yukon,
- 7:21Speaker 2: a natural you know, rivalry game in our region. Yeah,
- 7:26Speaker 2: just a fun big East war on on Sunday.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Yeah, so let's pack the place. It's gonna be great
- 7:31Speaker 1: Theater Providence in Yukon. Thanks to Dan Hurley, John Fanta
- 7:34Speaker 1: joins us. In just a moment, we'll talk Biggi's a
- 7:36Speaker 1: little bigger picture around the country as well.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Coach.

- 7:42Speaker 1: you on Sunday.
