- 0:00Hello, welcome back to Scripture Central.
- 0:02I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson. And I'm John or Jack Welch.
- 0:07And we are here to talk about some wonderful chapters in
- 0:10Second Nephi 11 through 19 as part of the come follow me.
- 0:15And I just have to tell you that I have never enjoyed these
- 0:18chapters more. When you have to teach
- 0:20something, you studied a little bit more detail.
- 0:22But I hope that this year and some of the things that we can
- 0:25share with you will also help you appreciate these chapters
- 0:29more than any other year. They are beautiful, and the book
- 0:32of Second Nephi is powerful in its testimony of our Savior,
- 0:36Jesus Christ. It's a wonderful way to learn
- 0:39how we can come closer to our Savior, how we can become more
- 0:43holy, and how we can see the prophecies that were given
- 0:47before for our day and age. Then that's beautifully said.
- 0:51And second, Nephi is challenging.
- 0:55Amen. And you know, sometimes it can
- 0:58be daunting but never fails to reward those who will engage it
- 1:06fully and directly. And especially, I think using
- 1:10the keys and the understanding that Nephi gives us helps
- 1:14readers today to really understand and get the most out
- 1:18of these chapters. And I've been impressed as we've
- 1:21gone through this material again, how it all comes
- 1:25together. And I hope you'll, as all of our
- 1:29readers will, we'll we'll see how these pieces fit into
- 1:34Nephi's prophetic view that we've talked about before and
- 1:39how everything becomes clear, he says.
- 1:41These things are simple, plain and precious.
- 1:45But. That's for him.
- 1:47It leaves it up to. Us.
- 1:49Well, I also feel like last when we began Second Nephi, we said
- 1:53there was a reason why he separated his two books.
- 1:56And I feel like not only is it for poetry and beauty and and
- 2:02message, but these chapters are meat.
- 2:06This is for those who are ready to have higher doctrinal
- 2:10religious information, and Chapter 11 is organized in such
- 2:15a beautiful way that it allows us to see what some of that
- 2:19organization was, stepping back and looking at Chapter 11 as a
- 2:27whole. It's a short.
- 2:28It's a little short chapter, but you are the chiasmus, man.
- 2:33Have you seen it Gently as a as a loose chiasmus all the way
- 2:37through from beginning to end. Yes, indeed, and and Nephi does
- 2:41have a way of saying things twice.
- 2:43Yes. And he believes in two or three
- 2:45witnesses, and so the duplication.
- 2:48Is intentional. It it is, it's intentional.
- 2:51It accentuates and. So when you see and there are
- 2:55some things, point them out that Nephi mentions twice here and
- 2:59they need our special attention. So in Chapter 11 I will liken
- 3:04these words unto my people. And then you continue on.
- 3:07And he talks about my children, and then he says, I saw my
- 3:11Redeemer. And then we get the beautiful
- 3:14sections on. And in verse three about the
- 3:17need for the three witnesses. Actually, two and three that
- 3:21more witnesses are needed. And we'll talk about those 3 in
- 3:24just a minute. But as the chiasmus continues
- 3:27on, I love this, he says. My soul delighteth in proving
- 3:31unto my people the truths of the coming of Christ.
- 3:35And then this getting closer to the center, he says the law of
- 3:38Moses was given, but it was all given of God from the beginning
- 3:45as a type of Christ. It's all the typifying, It's
- 3:48what he used. I I think of it as a cookie
- 3:50cutter or as a there's consistency as we look not just
- 3:54for the law of Moses, but even the lives of the prophets.
- 3:58In fact, that word type is where we get typesetting, and you have
- 4:02an individual key or a letter in the font where you had to set
- 4:07the font one type type at a time.
- 4:10We we think of typing now as using a typewriter, But in their
- 4:13world, a type was also a seal or a stamp, something that could be
- 4:19stamped out multiple times. And so the image of Christ can
- 4:23be stamped out on each of us. And there are other things that,
- 4:28like Moses will do that will become a type and a shadow of
- 4:32things to come, as King Benjamin will say.
- 4:35So this idea of typology is a very powerful one.
- 4:41Nephi sees in Isaiah a pattern. It's a pattern of the plan of
- 4:48salvation. It's a pattern of God's plan for
- 4:53all of us on this earth. And the elements in that temple
- 4:58and sacred related pattern, the covenant, play out over and over
- 5:04again in our lives as we are righteous or not, as nations are
- 5:09obedient or disobedient and we can see these things recurring.
- 5:14Patterns over and over. And I also feel like it's not
- 5:18just they're focusing towards Christ, but just look at the
- 5:21symbolism of the temple. The altar represents Christ, the
- 5:24veil represents Christ, and those are.
- 5:26Types. They're all types of Christ,
- 5:28every single detail in there. Even the priest is acting as if
- 5:32he were the Anointed 1 and he has been anointed as well in
- 5:35order to serve in the temple. But the Prophet Hoshiya was at
- 5:39chapter 12, verse 10 I think, and where he says the lives of
- 5:43the prophets are to typify of our promised Messiah who's
- 5:47coming. So the fact that Nephi has that
- 5:50as the center of his message here, look at everything I'm
- 5:53going to teach you. Look at everything in the
- 5:55history of the world, the point to our Savior.
- 5:59He's using beautiful poetry. He's using the lives of the
- 6:02prophets. He's using the lives of his
- 6:04people to point to Jesus Christ or Jesus the Messiah.
- 6:08And Nephi makes that central point emphatic, as he then
- 6:13restates those points in the opposite order in the
- 6:16second-half of the chapter. So the chapter you wonder, why
- 6:20would Chapter 12 break off where it does and, you know, begin?
- 6:24Since 11:00. It's such a short one, but the
- 6:27the Chapter 11 is a nice unit and logically breaks there.
- 6:32The second-half coming out my soul delighteth in proving unto
- 6:36my people the Christ that should come, and then instead of the
- 6:42there were three witnesses. Now he repeats Christ's name,
- 6:44and he becomes a witness for three times beautiful.
- 6:47And then as he concludes again to my people, and I want you to
- 6:51liken them unto yourself. So it's a beautiful little
- 6:54chiasmus. And I hope in all of second
- 6:57Nephi, you take the time to get out your pencil and start
- 7:00circling some of these things that are repeated, or highlight
- 7:02them. But there is such power in
- 7:05seeing the beauty of the literature here, and the
- 7:08parallelism was the poetry in the Hebrew language.
- 7:12Wonderful. And you might wonder, where did
- 7:15Nephi learn how to write this way?
- 7:19One of the things that Isaiah is good at is writing with chiastic
- 7:23structure, and Nephi must have been taught how to read and
- 7:28write. And as a part of that training
- 7:31he would have understood and have been taught the stylistic
- 7:36and structural way in which you tell a story or you give a text.
- 7:42Have to realize that in the ancient world, they didn't have
- 7:44periods, they didn't have paragraphs.
- 7:49So you had to use internal structure like chiasmus in order
- 7:53for people to be able to tell where one idea ends and another
- 7:57begins. And worse than that, they don't
- 7:59even have capitalizations. So you really don't know when
- 8:01something ending and beginning and without the vowels words
- 8:04look the same. It's a very difficult task.
- 8:06So I'm really grateful that we have so many Old Testament texts
- 8:10in the Book of Mormon because we get a different view and we also
- 8:14can say this was the word of God.
- 8:15Then even though it went through hundreds and thousands of years
- 8:19of hands of scribes, it's still God's word.
- 8:22Do you want to talk about the three witnesses in Chapter 11?
- 8:31Of these three witnesses. Well, let's open it up.
- 8:34And it's interesting that all things shall be established by
- 8:38two or three witnesses. Deuteronomy.
- 8:41Exactly. This is a part of Jewish law,
- 8:44and it wasn't just given for purposes of establishing
- 8:48evidence in court. But Nephi says God also abides
- 8:53by the law, which I think is interesting.
- 8:55God will give us two or three witnesses, and we will learn in
- 9:00chapter 27 of second Nephi that there will be 3 witnesses for
- 9:05the Book of Mormon as well. So this principle of the three
- 9:09witnesses is a type, and I think it's also a type of the Godhead.
- 9:15It has to be you. Have the Father, the Son, and
- 9:17the Holy Ghost, and they bear witness of each other, we learn
- 9:20in 3rd Nephi 11. So they are also involved in
- 9:24this testifying. When you are a witness, you
- 9:28testify. And he tells us who these
- 9:30witnesses are starting in Chapter 11, verse two.
- 9:33I Nephi would write more of the words of Isaiah.
- 9:37So he's mentioned him a little bit, paraphrased a verse or two.
- 9:40But he says, I want to talk about Isaiah.
- 9:42My soul delighteth in his words, and I will liken his words unto
- 9:46my people, and I will send them forth.
- 9:48And then he goes on and says, He verily saw my Redeemer, even as
- 9:53I have seen him. And my brother Jacob also has
- 9:56seen him. So I think the Three Witnesses
- 9:59are eyewitnesses of Jehovah. Then that's a wonderful way to
- 10:05put it because witnesses have to testify of what they know, what
- 10:10they have seen and heard. Otherwise it's what we call
- 10:13hearsay or second hand evidence which isn't as strong.
- 10:17And by the way, the word to be a witness, at least in Greek, is
- 10:23related to the word to be a martyr.
- 10:26Oh dear. Well, people are willing to bear
- 10:32testimony on pain of death Under the law of Moses.
- 10:36If you testify falsely in court, say in a case where someone
- 10:42might be put to death for the violation of the law, and you
- 10:45bear witness falsely, and that's discovered, you will receive the
- 10:50punishment that would have befallen the person had your
- 10:54testimony not been discovered as false.
- 10:56So as a false witness, the death penalty could apply.
- 11:00So being a witness was a very serious matter, and I think
- 11:04we're right, and I think Nephi thinks we will get this without
- 11:09a little coaching. But to me, as I read his words,
- 11:13I know that Nephi is speaking absolutely seriously.
- 11:18His eternal life is on the line, and he's not just casually
- 11:22talking about things that he hoped will happen.
- 11:25He's certainly not filling up pages with Isaiah.
- 11:28He has a specific mission, and he told us back in first Nephi.
- 11:32My mission is to bring people to Christ.
- 11:40You even brought a scroll. Do you want to show it?
- 11:42Well, yes, if you'd like to see that.
- 11:44I'd love to see it. This what what we have here is a
- 11:50photographic replication. It goes on to 27 feet.
- 11:53I don't think you want to see the.
- 11:54We're not going to unroll at all.
- 11:57What you're seeing here is a photographic printing on
- 12:01parchment, on leather of the full text of the Book of Isaiah,
- 12:07all 66 chapters. It's found in the Dead Sea
- 12:10Scrolls. This is a copy of it.
- 12:11If you go to the shrine of the book in Jerusalem, this is
- 12:15basically what you see there. And so this is a copy of that,
- 12:22but it shows you the way it was set out in columns.
- 12:27And what's I think really significant for us and for the
- 12:31Book of Mormon is that when I was born, this wasn't known and
- 12:39many people doubted that if we only had a copy of the Isaiah
- 12:46text in Hebrew, we would have a much different text.
- 12:52And that's because before this scroll was found, the oldest
- 12:56Hebrew text of Isaiah was the Masoretic Hebrew, which comes
- 13:011000 years after Christ. But the question was, can the
- 13:05Greek be trusted? This was discovered in 1947.
- 13:09People, of course, worked on it. It's been translated and many
- 13:13things studied about it. But what is interesting is that
- 13:18there's almost no difference between the Masoretic Hebrew and
- 13:23this Hebrew, which is this is more than 1100 years earlier
- 13:28than the Masoretic. So that ends up being a great
- 13:32confirmation of the accuracy of the text that we've always known
- 13:37of Isaiah. It also confirms the accuracy of
- 13:41the the brass plates, that there were more than there were more
- 13:43records there available and that we had them written down.
- 13:47And it's not just something that came up later that Isaiah was in
- 13:50the brass plates at 600 BC at least.
- 13:52The chapters we've got certainly were.
- 13:54I'm fascinated with how many times Isaiah is actually cited
- 13:58in the Book of Mormon. I feel like it's very
- 14:00significant that he's Nephi's favorite author, that he's the
- 14:04Lord's favorite author. And if he's hard to understand,
- 14:07I feel like one way we get to know someone is reading the
- 14:09books that they cherish the most.
- 14:11I think I can understand Nephi better.
- 14:13I can understand the Lord better when I understand their book
- 14:16better. And their favorite is Isaiah,
- 14:18and I think it's because he's so Christ centered.
- 14:21Yeah, with without a doubt. And think of it for just a
- 14:24minute. When did Isaiah die and where
- 14:26did he live? Isaiah lived in Jerusalem.
- 14:29Where did Nephi live? In Jerusalem.
- 14:32And Isaiah dies sometime shortly after 700 BC and Lehigh is born
- 14:40less than 50 years later. What does that tell us?
- 14:44Lehigh's parents or grandparents?
- 14:46Would have known Isaiah and he would have been the prophet, the
- 14:49time. Exactly.
- 14:50He's he is the main prophet others that we think of like
- 14:54Daniel and Ezekiel. No, they haven't.
- 14:57They haven't been born yet. They're not there yet, so the
- 15:00collection of prophecy is much smaller.
- 15:05At the time of Lehigh, yeah. That we might have thought.
- 15:07And So what might have been on the brass plates is
- 15:10predominantly Isaiah. There's some Zeniths and some
- 15:14Zenoch, and maybe a few others. Isaiah is their king, their
- 15:18prophet. Yeah, and to have this body of
- 15:22revelation, especially about the future, what is going to come?
- 15:27A lot of the initial prophets solve current problems, but
- 15:32Isaiah's vision is massive. It extends from the very
- 15:37beginning to the very end of the millennial times and the day of
- 15:43the Lord. And Isaiah was valued, I think,
- 15:48in Nephi's world, much as we as Latter Day Saints value Joseph
- 15:55Smith. Oh, interesting.
- 15:57When we were born, it was only about 100 years after Joseph
- 16:00Smith's martyrdom, right? Maybe for you, Jack.
- 16:05Well, I was born in 1940. Six.
- 16:07That definitely works for you then.
- 16:08But. But the point is that Isaiah
- 16:15would have been valued. The way we value Joseph Smith,
- 16:20and also Joseph Smith's revelations came a piece at a
- 16:25time. Some of them are very short,
- 16:27some are longer. The first collection, the Book
- 16:31of Commandments, and then the Doctrine and Covenants, was
- 16:34published. But in a way, the Doctrine and
- 16:38Covenants is a scrapbook. It's just a collection of
- 16:41various revelations. Revelations that came to Joseph
- 16:44at different times very. Little in the way of
- 16:46introduction, telling us almost nothing about why the
- 16:49revelations were given. It's the same with Isaiah.
- 16:54The book of Isaiah is a scrapbook.
- 16:56Interesting way to look at it. And some of these revelations
- 16:59were given when Isaiah was younger and someone he was
- 17:02older, and so he refer he. And so Isaiah will return to
- 17:08certain themes that have shown up in earlier visions or earlier
- 17:13prophecies. And so you have to go through
- 17:16and rearrange Isaiah by topic. To understand it and obviously
- 17:21it's been edited and things have been moved around.
- 17:23But before we get into the text, can I just talk about the
- 17:25Prophet for a minute? So he served under 5 different
- 17:28kings, and I've got a chart here of where he falls in that last
- 17:34few years of the Judean kings in the southern tribes and where
- 17:37Lehigh comes in here. The world still has the northern
- 17:43tribes and the southern tribes during Isaiah's time, at least
- 17:46his early years before the northern tribes are taken away
- 17:50when Sennacherib's attack comes in in 721 from Assyria.
- 17:54But it's helpful when I'm reading Isaiah to look at some
- 17:57of these charts and see exactly where things fit in.
- 18:01I also been fascinated that in the Book of Mormon we have 1/3
- 18:05of Isaiah quoted. That's quite a bit, but 60% of
- 18:10those verses are changed. The brass plates had a
- 18:14significant differences and so you have 201 verses that are
- 18:19very consistent with the King James, but 277 that have
- 18:25dramatic changes in them. I also think that when I study
- 18:29the book of Second Nephi on the Isaiah chapters, it's great to
- 18:33do with a partner. And I have somebody reading
- 18:36Isaiah and someone reading second Nephi, and I have on my
- 18:39scriptures brackets what is added and what isn't.
- 18:43And I think it's significant to see the brass plates had some
- 18:46very important doctrinal differences than we have in our
- 18:49current King James. And some of those differences,
- 18:53even though they are all only subtle or minor, appearing a
- 18:57single word, though, can change the whole direction of a
- 19:00particular passage. Does that ever occur?
- 19:02Lynn oh, yeah, over and over. We'll get to it as we go through
- 19:05it. But as we talk about the text, I
- 19:08appreciate, Jack, your book on charting the Book of Mormon.
- 19:12That gives us these wonderful diagrams of which times Nephi
- 19:16and the other prophets in the Book of Mormon are actually
- 19:19quoting from Isaiah when they're paraphrasing Isaiah.
- 19:22And who is it? And I'm fascinated to say it's
- 19:25not just second Nephi. That's right.
- 19:28And what you're referring to are charts 96 and 97, which anyone
- 19:34can find. Go on the Scripture Central
- 19:37Archive and just search for charting the Book of Mormon.
- 19:42Charts 96 and up will come APDF of this page, and it shows in
- 19:49two long columns, direct quotations of Isaiah, and they
- 19:53run from first Nephi to 3rd Nephi.
- 19:56Some are in Mosiah, of course a Ben, and I will quote Isaiah,
- 20:00but they're quite a few in 3rd Nephi as well.
- 20:03And it looks to be like most of them are only parts of the
- 20:05chapter. That's correct.
- 20:07So we only have portions. It's almost like he uses that as
- 20:10a springboard for commentary. Yes, sometimes it's it's just
- 20:14one verse. I'm also fascinated to see on
- 20:17your chart where in the book of Isaiah do we have the same
- 20:21chapter repeated over and over? And it's fascinating to see
- 20:25chapter 52 you were just mentioning, repeated 17 times in
- 20:2917 different places in the Book of Mormon.
- 20:31Is sometimes quoted and sometimes paraphrased, but.
- 20:34Very important chapters, and these are the chapters that talk
- 20:37the most about our Saviour, the coming of the Messiah.
- 20:41I Nephi is so consistent on what he chooses, as was King Benjamin
- 20:46and Abinadai and even our Lord in the chapter that he gives
- 20:50everything focuses on testifying of Jesus.
- 20:54Exactly. Now these charts leave it up to
- 20:57you as the reader to go through and see now what's he talking
- 21:01about here. But one chart will help you if
- 21:05you want to just go in Book of Mormon order and pick up all the
- 21:09places where Isaiah is referred to, quoted or paraphrased.
- 21:13Chart 97 goes in Isaiah order, so if you want to see which
- 21:18chapters in Isaiah are quoted. Which ones are included and
- 21:22which ones are excluded? Which I think.
- 21:24Is significant. Well, I do, because when I go
- 21:26and look there, there's more historical They don't apply to
- 21:29the latter days they apply to. 36 or 39 They're not there.
- 21:32Yeah, because they're not relevant to Nephi's place.
- 21:37Nephi says it's important for people, if they want to
- 21:40understand Isaiah, to understand the regions and the people and
- 21:43the events that Isaiah was involved with.
- 21:48But what Nephi is pulling out are the things that have more
- 21:51eternal value. And he's talking now to his
- 21:56posterity, his living children and grandchildren.
- 22:00And he's writing. And to us, he.
- 22:02Says He's right. He's including him for us.
- 22:04Exactly. But he's not thinking.
- 22:08He says to understand this you need to know those things.
- 22:10Well, I know those things, he says.
- 22:12And so I can quote this and use it and help you understand it.
- 22:16I feel like one of the things that is most helpful for me is
- 22:18to look at our Isaiah chapters with a lens towards the temple.
- 22:23Margaret Barker once said the temple and its rituals were at
- 22:26the center of Isaiah's world. And Isaiah is not only just
- 22:30living during 5 kings, but he's living in Jerusalem and he's
- 22:34right there next to the temple and what?
- 22:36Temple did he have? Solomon's Temple.
- 22:38He does. He has still Solomon's Temple
- 22:42with all that was originally designed.
- 22:44It's the archetype of the temple and the laws of obedience and
- 22:49sacrifice, and the holy steps and progression.
- 22:54Nephi knows this as well. And before we jump into chapter
- 22:5812, I want to just give a few ideas that I use.
- 23:01And I know Nephi gives us ideas as well, but these are messianic
- 23:05prophecies. They're prophecies of the last
- 23:07day, and they're very poetic. I find this is used before, but
- 23:13Isaiah is the Shakespeare of of Hebrew as we have in English,
- 23:18and you've got to read them as poetry and look for these
- 23:21parallels in order to find the deeper meanings.
- 23:24No, we should say when you're using the word poetry, you don't
- 23:29mean poetry quite the way we think.
- 23:31OK, OK. I don't mean rhyming.
- 23:32Of course. That's right.
- 23:33Yeah, yeah, yeah. But what do you mean by him
- 23:36being the Shakespeare? How about vocabulary?
- 23:39Does Isaiah have a big vocabulary?
- 23:41Yes, yes, he. Does, And Shakespeare did too.
- 23:45He knows how to use words. He's a wordsmith, and his and
- 23:48his analogies, he's constantly likening things unto They're
- 23:51just beautiful. And Isaiah is able to paint word
- 23:56pictures. I think that's what poets
- 23:59actually create are images in our mind where we have enough
- 24:03detail to be able to see ourselves, what he has seen and
- 24:08what we need to see and how we can see the Savior.
- 24:11So I think seeing him as a poet in that sense is a real gift.
- 24:16And in the ancient world, Homer, of course, was thought of as
- 24:20almost a demigod. Because he could use words so
- 24:23well. That well, and it was one of the
- 24:25muses, a divine influence for the Greeks that would allow
- 24:30people to speak eloquently, accurately, but inspiringly.
- 24:35And so we have to pause. We have to, of course, regret
- 24:41that we can't read Isaiah and understand all the illusions.
- 24:48You can't even read Shakespeare if you don't know Elizabethan
- 24:51England. Yeah, I got to have my Oxford
- 24:53English Dictionary there. And as we're going through, I
- 24:56think maps are helpful. I think charts with the kings
- 24:59are helpful. That's why I included that one.
- 25:00There I also find an addition to looking for these symbolisms,
- 25:05that the parallels, the repetition really becomes part
- 25:09of the poetry in the ancient world that makes it come alive
- 25:12to me. Don't give up.
- 25:15No, don't give up. Don't don't get to chapter 17.
- 25:21This is Isaiah 7 and say I'm not getting this.
- 25:24Keep reading, because Isaiah will bless you with a great
- 25:31prophetic experience. But let's dive in Now, we don't
- 25:39have much time to go through chapters 12 through 19, but
- 25:43there's a flow to these. There's a reason why he's put
- 25:46them in here. You've told me in the past,
- 25:48Jack, that you see rhythm to this.
- 25:50You call it something like a prophetic view or something.
- 25:53Well, we did talk earlier about Nephi's prophetic world view,
- 25:59and he divides the world into four stages.
- 26:03Or the prophetic view, and Isaiah will follow those, and
- 26:07Nephi will use that prophetic worldview as he interprets
- 26:11Isaiah and that the view is helpful to remember.
- 26:16First of all, he knows. Isaiah knows that there will be
- 26:22a destruction of Jerusalem. And the destruction is repeated
- 26:25in almost every one of these six chapters that we've got.
- 26:28But God has made promises, and those promises will be kept, and
- 26:32the Jews will be brought back, as they will be from their first
- 26:37exile into Babylon, so that the promise of the coming Messiah
- 26:42can be fulfilled. And they're all types also of
- 26:45the last days that Isaiah says. These are just types of this
- 26:49Lord's second coming. That's right.
- 26:51And then stage 2. For Nephi is realizing that when
- 26:55the Messiah comes, he will not be accepted by all people, and
- 27:01as a result of that there will be an even greater scattering,
- 27:06and that the House of Israel will be scattered throughout all
- 27:08the world. But there is a promise that the
- 27:11Lord's hand is always outstretched and he will somehow
- 27:15reach out, and the way he will do that is through the Gentiles.
- 27:21And this is the third stage whenever you see the word
- 27:24nations in the King James translation.
- 27:27It's always Gentiles or foreigners or something, yeah,
- 27:29yeah. That's exactly referring to the
- 27:32Gentiles. And so Stage 3 is there will be
- 27:36a day of the Gentiles when God will preserve enough things and
- 27:42will prepare a way that the gospel can eventually be brought
- 27:47to all the world. And the culminating event of the
- 27:51Day of the Gentiles is coming forth of the records, including
- 27:55especially the Book of Mormon. That will then prepare the way
- 27:58for the final culmination, which is Stage 4 the the preparation
- 28:03for the coming of the Millennium.
- 28:11OK, with that, let's dive into Chapter 12, Isaiah.
- 28:15I've got a couple of favorites here, he starts out by saying,
- 28:20and it came to pass in the last days, when the mountain of the
- 28:25Lord's house shall be established in the top of the
- 28:28mountains. That's a plural.
- 28:30Plural. It's not just one temple on
- 28:33Mount Moriah, and also it a it's a different time period and it
- 28:36shall be exalted above the hills.
- 28:38And the nation's plural again. And what is the word nations?
- 28:41You just taught us Gentiles, so the Gentiles will flow into it.
- 28:45It's not just a temple for the Israelites.
- 28:47And then in verse 3 and many people shall go and say, come,
- 28:51let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the House of the
- 28:54God of Jacob, and he will teach us his ways and we will walk in
- 28:59his paths. And walking is not just with
- 29:02your feet in the ancient world. That's right, it's your.
- 29:06Your whole behavior, it's living.
- 29:08It's the covenant path. Because we have a temple,
- 29:11because we have the House of God, we will live to be able to
- 29:15approach it, approach, entering into the presence of the Lord.
- 29:18So Isaiah begins with a broad prophetic view, Speaking of
- 29:22where this is all going to end. Yes, he starts at the end
- 29:26saying. There will come a time when all
- 29:28will be worshipping God on his holy place in his holy house.
- 29:32And he's going to backtrack and say, so how's this going to
- 29:34happen? Where did we come from?
- 29:36Why are we here? Sound familiar?
- 29:40And the rest of chapter 12 is just on this destruction of the
- 29:42proud and the wicked and the wealthy.
- 29:44And then chapter 13 in second ephi, which is Isaiah 3, refers
- 29:49to the destruction of Judah, Jerusalem, the daughters of
- 29:52Zion. And then the next chapter 14 and
- 29:554 Zion is cleansed. And then in 15 we have the
- 30:00destruction of even the Lord's vineyard.
- 30:02And then out of the blue, chapter 6 comes the vision of
- 30:06the throne of God, or chapter 16 in second ephi.
- 30:09And then we get these two interesting chapters, the
- 30:11messianic types of the prophecies in that are
- 30:15intermixed into this historical typology that we've talked
- 30:19about. And we'll end in Isaiah chapter
- 30:21nine or second ephi 19 on these beautiful messianic prophecies.
- 30:26So this is sort of an overview of where we're going and we'll
- 30:28just touch a little bit on some of these chapters.
- 30:30Well, in chapter 13 and we get a description of the extremities.
- 30:38This will be a cat catastrophic destruction of Jerusalem.
- 30:42Oh yeah, it's horrific. And you know, and as as we live
- 30:46in our modern world today as well, we can also stand in fear
- 30:54of the catastrophic powers, the the magnitude of weapons today.
- 31:03And the magnitude of natural disasters.
- 31:05Of what can occur? Interestingly, in chapter 13, he
- 31:08also though specifically points to the destruction of the
- 31:12Daughters of Zion because of their pride, their emphasis.
- 31:15Let me just start here, verse 16, Chapter 13.
- 31:19The Lord saith because the Daughters of Zion are haughty
- 31:23and walk without Stretch next. You know this this image for
- 31:26pride that they're they're putting themselves before other
- 31:29people, walking and mincing as they go.
- 31:33To me, that's women wearing stilettos.
- 31:35But I don't know what it means. You know, they they prance
- 31:37around as if they're proudful and they make a tinkling with
- 31:41their feet. Therefore I, the Lord will smite
- 31:44the scab and talks about how he's going to bring them down.
- 31:47And I feel like this is not just a message for Isaiah's time.
- 31:50This is so important for us to realize that Satan's lure of
- 31:56fashion and money and pride and and and attention to the wrong
- 32:01things. Our life is so needed to build
- 32:04the Kingdom of God. Let's prioritize the things that
- 32:07matter and not the things that you can buy with money.
- 32:10Absolutely, Lynn. What you're modeling here very
- 32:14well is the method that a person needs to use to actually
- 32:20understand Isaiah. And to read Isaiah, you have to
- 32:24go carefully and slowly, and you have to try, as Nephi says, to
- 32:30apply it to our day. Whatever your day is, or
- 32:33wherever you are, these are universal lessons.
- 32:37And if you're asking not just what did he mean, but what might
- 32:43these words mean to me? And how can I benefit from the
- 32:49warning that I feel the Lord is giving me?
- 32:52Personally, I don't think Isaiah was talking as much to the
- 32:58leaders as to the general people.
- 33:01Interesting. Chapter 14 also has some
- 33:05beautiful little chiastic parallels, and I just want to
- 33:07point out one or two. Let's look at them.
- 33:09This one starts in chapter 14, verses two to six.
- 33:13In that day shall the branch of the Lord be beautiful and
- 33:16glorious, and the fruit of the earth excellent and comely.
- 33:21And then we come to the center point here in verse 3.
- 33:25They that are left in Zion and remain in Jerusalem shall be
- 33:29called holy. And I see this holiness all over
- 33:34these Isaiah verses as well as in Second Nevi on his own.
- 33:37But holiness is the sanctification of the Saints.
- 33:40It's it's it's our goal. And he's really beautifully
- 33:43intertwining it here in his parallels.
- 33:45He says in verse four that the Lord washed the filth of the
- 33:48Daughters of Zion. You know, we've repented, we've
- 33:51we have left our ways of the world, and God purged the blood
- 33:55of Jerusalem. And then coming out of the
- 33:58parallels, we now see the dwelling place on Mount Zion.
- 34:02And he uses the beautiful image from Moses about the cloud by
- 34:05day and the pillar by night. He's thinking of the temple.
- 34:08It's always temple focused. You're right.
- 34:10Those who who come back or those who retain will be they'll be
- 34:16sanctified. They'll be holy.
- 34:17Yeah, because they've gone through repentance.
- 34:20They are now. There are ordinances involved
- 34:22here. They will be washed.
- 34:23Yes, and that's exactly what he says.
- 34:25And they will be purged. What does that mean?
- 34:28They'll be cleansed by fire. Right.
- 34:30And we believe in the baptism by fire that the Spirit is the
- 34:33cleansing agent. Exactly.
- 34:35And so they will be cleansed, not just physically but
- 34:38spiritually. And that comes right here at
- 34:43the, like you say, in the emphatic structure of this
- 34:46little prophecy about even though things are going to get
- 34:50bad and he knows that Israel is going to be taken captive, he
- 34:55knows that Jerusalem is going to be destroyed.
- 34:58But they will come back and they will have another chance.
- 35:03But then you mentioned that chapter 6 talks about Isaiah's
- 35:07vision. Yes, the throne Theophany.
- 35:10Where is that happening and why? Why does Nephi include that
- 35:15chapter? He didn't have to include that
- 35:16chapter. Well, again, it's coming unto
- 35:19Christ. And Isaiah 6 is my favorite
- 35:21chapter in all of Isaiah because he's seeing the throne of God.
- 35:25And the the descriptions there of the angels surrounding the
- 35:28throne with their six wings are so beautifully symbolic.
- 35:32And I go back to section 77 where the Lord taught Joseph
- 35:35Smith the wings represent power to move.
- 35:39This is section 77, verse four. Power to act and.
- 35:42And so if the wings are covering their head, their eyes and their
- 35:45ears, you know their mouth, they have power and then they have
- 35:50the ability to fly and then they have the ability to extra power
- 35:53on their feet. These angels have extended
- 35:56power. And then of course we learn
- 35:57about God himself in this vision of the throne.
- 36:01I love Isaiah 6. I think he included it because
- 36:04it testifies again of Christ, which is his reason why he has
- 36:08Isaiah in here. And had Nephi seen angels?
- 36:12And had Jacob seen angels? You know, we have our three
- 36:15witnesses of them again, yes. And had Joseph Smith seen Angel?
- 36:19Yes, very important. God works through his
- 36:22messengers, which is what the word Angel means.
- 36:25So that's Chapter 16, this Beautiful.
- 36:28Does Moroni quote Isaiah? Oh, yes.
- 36:31He does. How does he know Isaiah?
- 36:33Interestingly, I think when Moroni comes to visit Joseph
- 36:37Smith that first time, he quotes Isaiah.
- 36:40There are 11 places where Moroni will quote Isaiah as he is
- 36:45instructing Joseph about what will happen and what his
- 36:49mission. Will be.
- 36:50So how does Moroni know Isaiah? Either the brass plates or
- 36:54Nephi. He knows his stuff and after
- 36:58all, he had a while all alone to memorize them so.
- 37:01I don't know how many books he was hefting around though, as
- 37:03he's trying to hide from the Lamanites.
- 37:05I don't know, but I'm sure he rehearsed that speech before he
- 37:08gave it to Joseph probably checked his footnotes.
- 37:11Yeah, he did have a few times. Yeah, but I think that shows how
- 37:15important Moroni clear at the very end of the Book of Mormon
- 37:18realizes that it's all grounded in.
- 37:21These prophecies of our Savior. It's not just Lehigh and Nephi.
- 37:27It's Isaiah. And zenith and the whole
- 37:30prophetic world view. The chapter that I want to spend
- 37:34our ending on is chapter 18, where he starts talking about
- 37:38the temple again, 1814. He shall be a sanctuary.
- 37:43So he's talking about Christ. We're going to be sanctified by
- 37:45Christ and then Christ becomes this sanctuary.
- 37:49And the sanctuary is actually the Holy of Holies and Holy
- 37:51Place. It's not the whole Temple Mount,
- 37:52it's not all of the Solomon's Temple.
- 37:54It's just this sacred space that's another type of Christ,
- 37:59But it's a stone of stumbling. For some people, it's a rock of
- 38:01offence, for some people it's a snare, he says.
- 38:04And then in verse 16 bind up the testimony.
- 38:07And you just showed us an example of their scrolls and
- 38:11their witnesses. Seal the law among my disciples.
- 38:15And then in verse 17 I will wait upon the Lord hideth His face
- 38:21from the House of Jacob, but I will look for him.
- 38:24Behold, I and my children, whom the Lord hath given me, are for
- 38:28signs and wonders in Israel. And then he goes on the talking
- 38:32about dwelling on Mount Zion. I think this is a temple text
- 38:35again. It's the vision of where this
- 38:36can go. And as we bind up the
- 38:39testimonies in our hearts, I think it's to have the Spirit of
- 38:43God with us, directing our lives.
- 38:47This lesson, of course, ends with Chapter 19, and I think,
- 38:51Lynn, it would be nice if we ended our session right now by
- 38:56looking at a couple verses in chapter 19, which are the most
- 38:59famous of all for unto us a child is born.
- 39:04Unto us a son is given, and the government will be built upon
- 39:07his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor,
- 39:10the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace, and
- 39:16of the Increase of his government and Peace.
- 39:17There is no end. And what a way for us to end
- 39:22this week, remembering, as you mentioned earlier, all the
- 39:27different names and titles and functions that our Lord Jesus
- 39:31Christ will provide for us. He will provide us with counsel,
- 39:35with wisdom, with power and His name.
- 39:38He shall have all these names because He will have all of
- 39:42those attributes and characteristics.
- 39:45Of course, Handel made this indelibly memorable to us.
- 39:50Through the music of the Messiah.
- 39:53And these words and phrases also will be picked up by Nephi as he
- 40:02and later prophets in the Book of Mormon.
- 40:04Remember that there will be a son that will be born, and that
- 40:10that son will be a special son son who in the pre existence
- 40:17said, not my will, but thy will be done and.
- 40:23Then I'm so grateful for Isaiah. I'm grateful that Nephi has
- 40:27brought it to us and we'll see more as we go on in the next
- 40:31week or two with our come follow me study that this book is
- 40:38really aimed at all people, which includes us, which means
- 40:43it's a book for our time as well.
- 40:45Oh, I think so. And our testimony is
- 40:49strengthened as we read these chapters looking for Jesus
- 40:55Christ. He is there.
- 40:57And his hand is still stretched out, and may we feel his arms
- 41:03around us. And as you approach our your
- 41:06scripture study prayerfully, may you feel the Lord's embrace.
- 41:12I pray in the name of Jesus Christ.
- 41:14Amen.
