- 0:03Speaker 1: Everyone, Welcome into the Irish Steters Podcast and the Lover
- 0:06Speaker 1: Week closer.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Through the NFL season.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Michael Quid delighted to be joined by Jimmy English d
- 0:11Speaker 1: m Key. First off, Jilly, welcome back on. We missed
- 0:14Speaker 1: you last week.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I missed you boys as well. I was very
- 0:17Speaker 3: strange not doing our weekly podcast. Michael, I'm glad to
- 0:20Speaker 3: be back in your company. Yeah, like you said. But
- 0:23Speaker 3: the weeks are rolling down the until the opening game
- 0:26Speaker 3: of the season and you know I'm at your person
- 0:29Speaker 3: Steeters Football.
- 0:30Speaker 1: We're getting their d of Truon's finalists. My friends, we're
- 0:33Speaker 1: back for another week as well.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Itchill outed this week.
- 0:36Speaker 4: Ready to go.
- 0:37Speaker 5: Back for another week? Mike, Yes, good, I'll say good
- 0:40Speaker 5: to be back again. Is it September? Yes, please hurry up.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I think have any NI teachers or any mons stores
- 0:46Speaker 1: and listening to this will say no, they don't want
- 0:49Speaker 1: to be September. But football fans, yes, absolutely. Steeter's playing
- 0:52Speaker 1: the books early Saturday morning and we'll talk about this
- 0:56Speaker 1: off for we get our guests done. But it's sort
- 0:58Speaker 1: of a special week for us because if you were Ireland,
- 1:01Speaker 1: and if you're listening to this, if you're a Steeters fan,
- 1:02Speaker 1: if you're an NFL fan, it doesn't really matter who
- 1:05Speaker 1: you support. You can watch the Steels for free on
- 1:09Speaker 1: gea Go for their preseason games. It's just announced today
- 1:12Speaker 1: by the Steels and by the Ges.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Was pretty cool.
- 1:14Speaker 1: We'll talk about it and we'll go in the more
- 1:15Speaker 1: information on it, and that's if you're on the Island
- 1:17Speaker 1: of Barden after we get our guests on. I guess
- 1:20Speaker 1: before we do that. Jimmy, you know, obviously we didn't
- 1:22Speaker 1: have you on the Talk at length last week, just
- 1:24Speaker 1: sort of your thoughts so far in training camp, because
- 1:26Speaker 1: it's it's been interesting to see the league so far,
- 1:29Speaker 1: not just for the Steels, but you know, every team
- 1:31Speaker 1: get back into it. We've seen injuries throughout the league, thankfully.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I know we've seen some injuries for the Steelers, but frankfully,
- 1:39Speaker 1: they're all seem to be quite a positive sort of
- 1:41Speaker 1: vibe coming out us amidst College. And now we look
- 1:43Speaker 1: at this weekend, this Bucks game, and we hope that
- 1:46Speaker 1: we can just go from there and work each week.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, Michael, And you know, obviously one of the
- 1:51Speaker 3: most notable injuries has been to Joe Burrow. You know,
- 1:54Speaker 3: but yeah, I mean, Steelers camp so far has been
- 1:57Speaker 3: It's been a couple of things that have stood out
- 1:59Speaker 3: to me. Most notably has been the development of George Piggins.
- 2:03Speaker 3: I mean, he's just become a monster in year two.
- 2:05Speaker 3: And we talked about this in the early weeks of
- 2:07Speaker 3: our summer podcasting, like how important he's going to be
- 2:10Speaker 3: to the Steelers offense this year, and from videos that
- 2:14Speaker 3: we're seeing on social media, he is just He's grabbing
- 2:17Speaker 3: every ball that's thrown his way. He's making some absolutely
- 2:20Speaker 3: ridiculous catches, and himself and Joey Porter Junior are going
- 2:25Speaker 3: hard one on one, which is what you want to see.
- 2:27Speaker 3: It's our number one receiver versus you know who eventually
- 2:31Speaker 3: is going to morph into our number one cornerback. And
- 2:34Speaker 3: I think that competitive stority is going to help them
- 2:36Speaker 3: grow massively throughout their young Stadters careers. And so for me,
- 2:41Speaker 3: that's what stood out the most. I think as well,
- 2:45Speaker 3: Darnell Washington has been an interesting development. I read somewhere
- 2:49Speaker 3: recently that he got the better of TJ Watt during
- 2:52Speaker 3: the practice in tight ends on on linebackers drills, which
- 2:58Speaker 3: made me raise my eyebrows a little bit. Because that
- 3:00Speaker 3: you see somebody get better at T J.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Watts.
- 3:02Speaker 3: So I mean there's lots to be excited about, and
- 3:05Speaker 3: there's lots there's lots going on and yeah, look like
- 3:09Speaker 3: like like day said Rown on September and that's good
- 3:12Speaker 3: tenn to some Steelers football, absolutely admit.
- 3:15Speaker 1: And I guess before we get our guests on Dave,
- 3:17Speaker 1: we we talked the length of the few things last
- 3:19Speaker 1: week we talked and about Adam McFarland, you know, really
- 3:23Speaker 1: get getting in there at that third running back position.
- 3:26Speaker 1: He's continued to do well. Has there been anything did
- 3:29Speaker 1: because I know you were up to four o'clock in
- 3:30Speaker 1: the morning watching friday Y Lights our art time. Has
- 3:33Speaker 1: it with anything that tickled your fancy just for Smith's College,
- 3:36Speaker 1: like like Jimmy over the last few weeks?
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah, obviously, you know with the DAP chart.
- 3:41Speaker 5: You know the DAP shot was nice yesterday, Mike, a
- 3:44Speaker 5: few interesting parts of it. No rookies have been named
- 3:47Speaker 5: as starters, which it doesn't really surprise me. We we
- 3:51Speaker 5: mentioned in the podcast last week. You know, Mike, Mike Commlin,
- 3:54Speaker 5: he's not the type of throw the young guns and
- 3:56Speaker 5: with the lands if you like, you know brought up
- 3:58Speaker 5: Joan just this sacond string behind that More junior, you know,
- 4:01Speaker 5: Joey Porter junior. He's been named the second string behind
- 4:03Speaker 5: Pop Peters and Levi Wallace and Darnell Washington named it
- 4:06Speaker 5: a fourth string. It just proves that, you know, with
- 4:10Speaker 5: coach Tomlin, he's not gonna throw these guys into the bed.
- 4:13Speaker 5: He's gonna let them sort of earn their place. And
- 4:16Speaker 5: you know you're gonna have to do that. Being a
- 4:17Speaker 5: Pittsburgh Steeter, you know you're playing for one of the
- 4:19Speaker 5: most successful organizations and the most successful organization in the sports.
- 4:23Speaker 5: So it's obviously been not as well. I've looked at
- 4:26Speaker 5: through the depth charts, Demonte Casey and the Keanu nail
- 4:30Speaker 5: at the strong safety position, they're going to be bottling.
- 4:32Speaker 5: It oubts me personally. I am a big fan of
- 4:34Speaker 5: Keanu and Neils. You know, everything he'd done at Atlanta.
- 4:37Speaker 5: You mentioned about Antony McFarland. He's been named his third
- 4:39Speaker 5: string running back. You know, Galen Warrens and Modice that
- 4:42Speaker 5: beat him out just for now. But as you say,
- 4:44Speaker 5: like we we wematched about mc donald, he's he's not
- 4:47Speaker 5: the sort of coach that's gonna start naming starters two
- 4:49Speaker 5: weeks into the in the in the training camp.
- 4:51Speaker 2: It's just not gonna happen.
- 4:52Speaker 5: He's gonna be sat in the gate with goals to
- 4:54Speaker 5: say I want to be the starter, and that's just
- 4:57Speaker 5: gonna it's just going the way it's gonna be going forward.
- 5:00Speaker 5: So a lot of interest and inclusions are like Jimmy
- 5:03Speaker 5: said about, you know, obviously with with with all that
- 5:07Speaker 5: the players coming in. You know, with George Pekins as well,
- 5:09Speaker 5: he's proven already that he's going to be the player
- 5:12Speaker 5: we know he's going to be this year.
- 5:13Speaker 2: He's going to back up that talk. But apart from that,
- 5:15Speaker 2: everything else.
- 5:15Speaker 5: Is a smooth sill and just just get us into
- 5:18Speaker 5: the season already.
- 5:18Speaker 2: I count just to.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Pick up with your point, Dery David about Jayleen Warren
- 5:23Speaker 3: and McFarland for that second string spot. I mean, from
- 5:25Speaker 3: what we've seen from Jennen, from Jena Warren last year,
- 5:29Speaker 3: I personally believe that he could be a starter and
- 5:31Speaker 3: another team if Najie Harris wasn't on the Steelers, and
- 5:36Speaker 3: I honestly, I mean I think Jenna Warren had a
- 5:39Speaker 3: more memorable season last year compared to Nagi. So that
- 5:42Speaker 3: might be slightly controversial, and I know people are going
- 5:45Speaker 3: to disagree with me for sure. Look that's what we're
- 5:47Speaker 3: here for, is to chatter all these kind of things.
- 5:50Speaker 3: And I'm really excited to see what Jaylen Warren can
- 5:53Speaker 3: can produce and hopefully get a bit more playing time.
- 5:57Speaker 3: I think he I think he did he have two
- 5:58Speaker 3: touchdowns last year. I can't exactly bought. I mean, you know,
- 6:02Speaker 3: as far as the NFL backups go, I think he's
- 6:04Speaker 3: definitely one of the better quality ones in the league.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Excited to see how Jalen Warren does this.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Year one I think one pluchstar or I think I
- 6:12Speaker 1: think one or two last year, going on nearly four
- 6:14Speaker 1: hundred yards as well. So Spott all nuts and let's
- 6:17Speaker 1: let's dive into it. Let's hear from this week's guest.
- 6:21Speaker 1: We are delighted to welcome Craig Wealthy from Sediars Station
- 6:25Speaker 1: Radio to this podcast this week. Craig has played for
- 6:29Speaker 1: the Steelers and he's talked about the Sediars three years,
- 6:32Speaker 1: so we're delighted to walcrom Craig to the Irish Theaters
- 6:34Speaker 1: Podcast now this week on The Irish Theaters Podcast, We're
- 6:40Speaker 1: delighted to have a guy to play guards for the Pittsburgh.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Stators from nineteen eighty to eighty nine.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Serve as a member of the radio broadcast thing that
- 6:47Speaker 1: the Sailors for over two decades, and he's now a
- 6:49Speaker 1: color analyst on the Staters Radio Network game broadcast. He
- 6:53Speaker 1: also hosts a daily show in the Locker Room with
- 6:55Speaker 1: fallowed former Stater Mac Starks on Sediors Station Radio, and
- 6:58Speaker 1: if you're in Ireland, you can to that each day
- 7:00Speaker 1: between three to five pm our time with Ireland, or
- 7:04Speaker 1: you can get it in the podcast. Delighted to welcome
- 7:06Speaker 1: in Craig Wolfy.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Craig, how's it going.
- 7:09Speaker 4: It's going good, brother, Thank you for having me. It's
- 7:11Speaker 4: great to be here with you, even though we are
- 7:14Speaker 4: an ocean apart.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Absolutely, and you played until leading nine, so you just
- 7:19Speaker 1: missed out on that trip to Dublin. Have you ever
- 7:22Speaker 1: been to Land before it?
- 7:23Speaker 4: Quick? No, I haven't. I've been to England, but I
- 7:27Speaker 4: didn't get up to Ireland, and I also wanted to
- 7:30Speaker 4: get to Scotland, so I'm hoping to get back there
- 7:32Speaker 4: at some point in time. But truly, it would be
- 7:35Speaker 4: a great to be a wonderful thing to do. My
- 7:38Speaker 4: compadre Max starts in the locker room. He's one of
- 7:41Speaker 4: them world travelers. He's all over the place. Man. But
- 7:44Speaker 4: you know, I have not gotten thus that far as
- 7:47Speaker 4: he has.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Man, never saying ever, Greg, we'll get you over at
- 7:52Speaker 3: some stage in the near future. And obviously the Steelers
- 7:55Speaker 3: are right in the middle of training camp at the minute.
- 7:57Speaker 3: But you yourself actually play with this Branton eighty to
- 8:01Speaker 3: eighty nine, can you tell us about your own training
- 8:03Speaker 3: camp memories?
- 8:04Speaker 4: You know, it was so funny because I was just
- 8:06Speaker 4: talking with Mason Cole, the center for the Steelers. We're
- 8:08Speaker 4: interviewing him. I said, do you realize that I first
- 8:12Speaker 4: got my reps on the very field where I was
- 8:14Speaker 4: watching you take your reps today, forty three years ago.
- 8:17Speaker 4: I mean he's not even forty three years old. I
- 8:20Speaker 4: mean that's old man. I am old, Okay, So I'm
- 8:23Speaker 4: laughing about it. And the fact is when I first
- 8:25Speaker 4: checked into Saint Vincent College, we stayed in Bonaventure Hall
- 8:29Speaker 4: now Bonadventure Hall had a couple of things. Number one,
- 8:32Speaker 4: no air conditioning and number two, horsehair stuffed mattresses. Okay,
- 8:37Speaker 4: so you can only imagine it wasn't the greatest place
- 8:40Speaker 4: to you know, spend overnight and so forth. And then
- 8:43Speaker 4: the third thing, I'd have to say, God bless them.
- 8:45Speaker 4: They were wonderful ladies, but the nuns were a little
- 8:47Speaker 4: a little rough on the cooking.
- 8:49Speaker 2: No, don't don't worry, Craig. I'm sure you can still
- 8:51Speaker 2: do uh.
- 8:52Speaker 5: You can still certainly do a joeva as an offensive lane,
- 8:54Speaker 5: don't worry about that's But obviously, being a former offensive
- 8:58Speaker 5: laneman yourself, you know our new first frame Peck Prodrec Jones.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Everybody's liking so far what we're saying. What sort of
- 9:03Speaker 2: advice would you give him? Obviously, heading into this first
- 9:05Speaker 2: year as a Steeler, you know.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Just what Pat Meyer is telling. Pat Meyer's the offense
- 9:10Speaker 4: line coach, and Pat says, say, work on one thing
- 9:12Speaker 4: a day, one thing. Get it in your mind, whether
- 9:14Speaker 4: it's your punch radius, the extension on it, whether it's
- 9:17Speaker 4: your kickstep, is you're dropping back in a vertical set,
- 9:20Speaker 4: making sure say to quarter the man, not overplay, give
- 9:23Speaker 4: away the insight, all these things. I mean, every day,
- 9:27Speaker 4: each all player out there has to work on the details.
- 9:30Speaker 4: It's the details that make the difference. Between the guys
- 9:33Speaker 4: that get there and the guys that stay there.
- 9:35Speaker 1: You've been the team in different roles dive for the
- 9:37Speaker 1: years now, and I'm sure you're you're obviously well aware
- 9:41Speaker 1: of the team strong links to Ireland. How impressed have
- 9:44Speaker 1: you been, not just with Ireland but different countries in
- 9:46Speaker 1: terms of what the Staters have been able to do
- 9:48Speaker 1: in marketing them wise it or ossolely.
- 9:50Speaker 4: Well, I think it's wonderful that there's such a connection.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Of course the Rudey family and the long history developed there,
- 9:56Speaker 4: and of course they've had Steelers Men's Fantasy Camp where
- 10:01Speaker 4: they literally had guys from all over the world, even
- 10:04Speaker 4: from Russia and so forth coming in the years past,
- 10:07Speaker 4: you know, from the Baltic stage and everywhere. So the
- 10:10Speaker 4: Steelers are a pretty much known worldwide, and certainly there's
- 10:14Speaker 4: a huge fan based down in Mexico just across the border,
- 10:17Speaker 4: and they have a Spanish speaking network radio group that
- 10:20Speaker 4: is part of the Steelers broadcast. So there's just there's
- 10:23Speaker 4: a lot of Steels face, which there should be. Okay,
- 10:26Speaker 4: I'm just saying, okay, you know, it's not not that
- 10:28Speaker 4: I'm just pointing out the you know, the obvious, but
- 10:31Speaker 4: I'm pointing out the obvious if you can catch my humor, Craig.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Obviously, you know the Steelers had some obsolutely legendary coaches
- 10:38Speaker 3: throughout the years, but you yourself played for the late
- 10:41Speaker 3: great No, what was that like?
- 10:43Speaker 4: Oh Man, magnificent man he was you know his touch
- 10:48Speaker 4: Oakin once said, uh, he could make he could give
- 10:51Speaker 4: you a look that make you want to lose control
- 10:53Speaker 4: of your inner body parts. You know. He was a
- 10:56Speaker 4: guy that just you know, he demanded the best and
- 11:00Speaker 4: he challenged you on a daily basis to be your best.
- 11:04Speaker 4: And I think the things about him, This is a
- 11:06Speaker 4: man that changed the very trajectory of my life. There's
- 11:10Speaker 4: no question that you know, I I for years, I
- 11:13Speaker 4: had a boxing gym. I trained athletes and fighters for
- 11:16Speaker 4: twenty years after I retired, and while I was in broadcasting,
- 11:19Speaker 4: and you know that the nolisms that rolled out on
- 11:22Speaker 4: a continual basis were you know, always there, and it
- 11:26Speaker 4: was really kind of funny. And the fact of the
- 11:28Speaker 4: matter is that man impacted a lot of guys. He
- 11:31Speaker 4: was a teacher more than just a football coach. And
- 11:34Speaker 4: I think that there's there's so many stories about him.
- 11:38Speaker 4: Certainly the guy was just I remember my very first
- 11:41Speaker 4: training camp. He asked. You know, he had a mantra,
- 11:45Speaker 4: the more you can do, the harder it is for
- 11:47Speaker 4: to get for us to get rid of you. Okay,
- 11:49Speaker 4: So then it comes to special teams, you know, volunteers.
- 11:51Speaker 4: All right, how about snappers? You want to snap? I
- 11:54Speaker 4: can snap. I know how hard is snapping long? Snapping
- 11:57Speaker 4: the ball? Right? At least I thought, you know, I
- 12:00Speaker 4: didn't know. So I go left there and I'm working
- 12:02Speaker 4: with Terry Bradshaw, the backup punter, and so I'm snapping
- 12:05Speaker 4: the I'm trying to snap the ball back to him. Well,
- 12:07Speaker 4: I roll the one back to him. I fired the
- 12:10Speaker 4: next one fifteen yards over his head, and the third
- 12:12Speaker 4: one was fifteen yards to the right, you know. And
- 12:15Speaker 4: Chuck Nole looked at me and goes, well, I hope
- 12:18Speaker 4: you can you can block better than you can snap,
- 12:20Speaker 4: because you're really bad at snapping. Take it in, you know.
- 12:24Speaker 4: I mean, but that's the way it was back then,
- 12:26Speaker 4: you know. But certainly Coach Knowle was just a terrific coach.
- 12:31Speaker 3: I like how you mentioned that Nolesm's there, because I
- 12:34Speaker 3: think Tony diisens are something that we're seeing that when
- 12:37Speaker 3: coach tom then that's always the recurring team with Steeters
- 12:40Speaker 3: head coaches, no.
- 12:42Speaker 4: Question about it. Mike Tomlin. The thing you love about
- 12:45Speaker 4: Mike Tomlin what makes him a part and parcel in
- 12:48Speaker 4: my mind so successful. He's the same guy every day,
- 12:51Speaker 4: each and every day, each and every year. He is
- 12:55Speaker 4: the same and he is You're never at a loss
- 12:58Speaker 4: knowing where you stand with coach Mike. I mean you
- 13:01Speaker 4: come away from whatever you know Number one, who the
- 13:04Speaker 4: big dog in the room is. It's him, and number
- 13:06Speaker 4: two where he's sitting with him. And number three, whatever
- 13:09Speaker 4: position he takes, he's gonna let you know. He wears
- 13:12Speaker 4: leadership like water wears wet, you know. I mean that's
- 13:15Speaker 4: just part and parcel of who he is. And I
- 13:17Speaker 4: think that's incumbent on all great coaches that last, you know,
- 13:22Speaker 4: over a decade. And you think about the Steelers since
- 13:24Speaker 4: Chuck Nole was signed in nineteen sixty nine, you're talking
- 13:28Speaker 4: about what I know is gonna be three all the
- 13:30Speaker 4: fame head coaches in a row, Chuck Noll, Bill Kauer,
- 13:33Speaker 4: and Mike Tomlin's gonna wear a gold jacket someday when
- 13:36Speaker 4: when he's ready to hang it out. Yeah, I'm well
- 13:40Speaker 4: deserved too. Yeah.
- 13:42Speaker 5: Obviously we've got some legendary head coaches. But as well
- 13:44Speaker 5: as you, Craig, you've played under, you know, probably one
- 13:47Speaker 5: of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, certainly up there,
- 13:50Speaker 5: you know Terry Bradshaw for a few years. What sort
- 13:52Speaker 5: of relationship did obviously you have with near the quarterbacks
- 13:54Speaker 5: you've played under, you know, he played on them alone
- 13:56Speaker 5: as well.
- 13:57Speaker 2: There's some great names there.
- 13:59Speaker 4: Oh there is. I mean, you could tell Terry's stories,
- 14:01Speaker 4: Mark Malone's stories. I mean, I remember Terry brads from
- 14:05Speaker 4: my first start my second year against the Dallas Cowboys
- 14:08Speaker 4: in preseason and on the third play of the very
- 14:11Speaker 4: first series, Randy White, the manster, trapped my hands, knocked
- 14:15Speaker 4: him down when I lost him completely, don't know where
- 14:17Speaker 4: he went, but the next thing I know, he's spiking
- 14:19Speaker 4: Bradshaw into the ground down at Texas Stadium, and I
- 14:22Speaker 4: can remember thinking this is not gonna be good. When
- 14:25Speaker 4: I go back to the huddle, you know you got
- 14:28Speaker 4: you're about to get lit up here, you know. Uh,
- 14:31Speaker 4: poor Mark Malone. I remember a game in Cleveland, actually
- 14:34Speaker 4: the three Rivers were playing against the Cleveland Browns and
- 14:37Speaker 4: they blitzed off the edges, one from each side, and
- 14:39Speaker 4: they actually sandwiched poor Mark on this blitz. He can
- 14:43Speaker 4: get the ball off. They hit him so hard as
- 14:45Speaker 4: helmet came off, they knocked him down. The ear pads
- 14:48Speaker 4: and the helmet were blown out. Hey, they literally got
- 14:51Speaker 4: knocked up. And Mark is laying on his back, his
- 14:54Speaker 4: eyes are rolled up. He's already checked into Tuesday and
- 14:56Speaker 4: it's only Sunday. And as he's laying there in the
- 15:00Speaker 4: blood is coming out of his mouth. Mike Webster was
- 15:02Speaker 4: standing there along with Tounch Chilkin and myself and we're
- 15:04Speaker 4: looking down and Mike Webster said, well, man, you'll have
- 15:07Speaker 4: that on big jobs like this, and then everyone went,
- 15:09Speaker 4: I got my guy, and we went and started going
- 15:11Speaker 4: I got my guy. Nobody want to help word Mark.
- 15:14Speaker 4: What did he think about it? We're trying to make
- 15:15Speaker 4: sure our butts were covered.
- 15:17Speaker 2: I love it.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I just love to hear the post on the present
- 15:22Speaker 1: stories Like Craig. We had a player from ninety seven
- 15:27Speaker 1: on Mark Brenner the tight End a couple of weeks
- 15:30Speaker 1: ago for the anniversary of the game in Dublin, and
- 15:32Speaker 1: he was telling us stories on his memories all the lead.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Don Ruddy, have you anything interestingly you can tell us
- 15:39Speaker 1: about your relationship? What would you like whenever you wear
- 15:41Speaker 1: this hime?
- 15:42Speaker 4: You know what I remember thinks so much about mister Rooney.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Man was the epitome of humbleness and humility. He was
- 15:50Speaker 4: is is it? The saying goes he was a man
- 15:53Speaker 4: of the people. He walked with kings, but he was
- 15:55Speaker 4: a man of the people. And certainly one of my
- 15:58Speaker 4: fondest memories was I was up in the stadium, the
- 16:02Speaker 4: new Giants Stadium, you know, not the old MetLife but
- 16:06Speaker 4: the new one, you know, And it was the very
- 16:09Speaker 4: first game the Steelers were playing I'm sorry at MetLife
- 16:11Speaker 4: and Steels were playing there, and so there was brand
- 16:16Speaker 4: new people all around, and he had security people up
- 16:19Speaker 4: in the press box. So mister Rooney comes in, he's
- 16:21Speaker 4: talking to the press Scots, you know, he's just and
- 16:24Speaker 4: there's a security guy there standing around and he's he's
- 16:28Speaker 4: he notices that mister Rooney didn't have any credentials. So
- 16:31Speaker 4: he comes up to mister Rooney says, I'm sorry, sir,
- 16:33Speaker 4: but you know you're you don't have proper credentials being here,
- 16:36Speaker 4: so you're gonna have to leave. And mister Rudy looked
- 16:38Speaker 4: at him and he said, oh, well, okay, young man,
- 16:41Speaker 4: he says, all right, he just went out out and
- 16:43Speaker 4: went about his business. And so he walked over and
- 16:46Speaker 4: you know, Bob Labriola from Steelers dot Com. So Labs
- 16:49Speaker 4: are standing there. And so as the young man comes
- 16:52Speaker 4: back after escorting mister Rooney out of the press box,
- 16:55Speaker 4: he comes up to Labs. He goes, he seemed like
- 16:57Speaker 4: a nice gentleman. He goes, do you know who that was? Labs?
- 17:00Speaker 4: You know, as usual itself love Labs. Labs goes, Yeah,
- 17:04Speaker 4: that was Dan Rooney, who happens to be the owner
- 17:07Speaker 4: of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He's a member of the Pro
- 17:09Speaker 4: Football Hall of Fame and the US Ambassador to Ireland. Uh,
- 17:13Speaker 4: you just kicked him out. Have a nice day. But
- 17:16Speaker 4: mister Rooney never said anything. He was just very kind
- 17:19Speaker 4: and gracious and knowing that it's just a young guy
- 17:21Speaker 4: who's new on the job didn't understand and and you know,
- 17:24Speaker 4: just instead of making a way, it's all right, you know,
- 17:28Speaker 4: he'll get it done.
- 17:29Speaker 2: It's a great story. You look in Black Nuther. It
- 17:31Speaker 2: was funny, like it's I.
- 17:33Speaker 4: Mean, you know, but that's the way mister Rooney was
- 17:35Speaker 4: just I know, he's very gracious.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Greig, this is pretty a bit of a tricky one.
- 17:40Speaker 3: You mean, you had had such a an intrinsic place
- 17:44Speaker 3: at the Steelers organization from being a player and now
- 17:47Speaker 3: you know, part of their best team. But like, if
- 17:49Speaker 3: you could pick one single memory from your time with Steelers,
- 17:52Speaker 3: you know, either at the start of your journey or
- 17:56Speaker 3: or now what what would that memory be? Watch stigns
- 17:58Speaker 3: out to you as like the opinion any of your Steaters,
- 18:01Speaker 3: your time with Steeters.
- 18:03Speaker 4: Oh, there's there's way too many. I couldn't even begin
- 18:06Speaker 4: to nail down one, you know, I was laughingly telling
- 18:10Speaker 4: the story the other day. I was up in training
- 18:11Speaker 4: camp and we're in the dining hall. You know, now,
- 18:14Speaker 4: I'm thinking forty three years ago, I'm sitting in the
- 18:17Speaker 4: dining hall. I'm trying to get in and out because
- 18:19Speaker 4: I don't want to sing. Okay. I come from a
- 18:21Speaker 4: long line of noted whalers. Okay, we the Wolflees can't
- 18:25Speaker 4: carry it to We are owned deaf as tone deaf
- 18:28Speaker 4: can be. My grandfather was once noted as he sounded
- 18:32Speaker 4: in church like when he was singing. It sounded like
- 18:35Speaker 4: the braying of a mule, you know, the hethaw thing,
- 18:38Speaker 4: all right, I mean that's how tone deaf he was.
- 18:40Speaker 4: So anyhow, I was trying to get in and out
- 18:42Speaker 4: before the veterans could get me to sing, because that's
- 18:45Speaker 4: the way it was back in nineteen eighty when I
- 18:47Speaker 4: first came them. You know, you got nailed by the vets.
- 18:49Speaker 4: They're gonna stand up, make you sing, and you know
- 18:51Speaker 4: you got to stand on a chair. That's your stage.
- 18:54Speaker 4: You got a whole spoon which was your microphone, and
- 18:56Speaker 4: then you got to belt out your school fight song.
- 18:59Speaker 4: So I'm I'm going in and out and I'm actually
- 19:02Speaker 4: avoiding all the veterans until one day I was a
- 19:04Speaker 4: little bit late, I was a little bit tired, didn't
- 19:06Speaker 4: get out out of the lunch room long enough, and
- 19:08Speaker 4: all of a sudden, who grabs me? But mean Joe Green?
- 19:12Speaker 4: I mean no, Joe looks right out. He goes, Hey,
- 19:16Speaker 4: if you've sung yet? I said, And I now got
- 19:19Speaker 4: a dilemma. Do I try to lie to the greatest
- 19:21Speaker 4: man killer in the history of the NFL at that point, right,
- 19:24Speaker 4: Joe Green? Do I lie to him and say, yeah,
- 19:25Speaker 4: I sang already, No, I don't think so he's gonna
- 19:28Speaker 4: know right away, right, so I could just found myself. Go, no,
- 19:32Speaker 4: I have it, mister Reid. He goes, are you get
- 19:34Speaker 4: up and saying so, as I'm slow walking up to
- 19:37Speaker 4: the front trying to think what am I gonna do?
- 19:40Speaker 4: You can stayed to panic. I don't even know my
- 19:42Speaker 4: school fights on it, Syracuse University. That's that's how bad
- 19:46Speaker 4: I am. Right, But I had this incredible idea. I
- 19:49Speaker 4: had just met this guy named Tounch Jilkin who happened
- 19:52Speaker 4: to be sitting in a row as I'm walking towards
- 19:55Speaker 4: the front, and as I walk up, I come to him.
- 19:57Speaker 4: I go, hey, Tounch, I go, and you know this
- 19:59Speaker 4: is my bu that we were drafted together in nineteen eighty.
- 20:02Speaker 4: You know, we were best friends for over forty years.
- 20:05Speaker 4: And of course he had passed away a couple of
- 20:06Speaker 4: years ago here and I think we all know that
- 20:09Speaker 4: story and how much I miss him. But anyhow, I
- 20:11Speaker 4: said to Touch, I said, hey, hey, Tutch, Joe said,
- 20:15Speaker 4: you got to sing with me? Right? Joe said, nothing
- 20:18Speaker 4: of the sort. I just got. I made it up.
- 20:21Speaker 4: I go and I look over and I look back.
- 20:23Speaker 4: Joe's about thirty feet away, right, and I go, yeah,
- 20:27Speaker 4: look he's looking right at you. Joe's looking at me,
- 20:29Speaker 4: but I'm standing next to Tutch. Trunch looks and goes, oh, okay.
- 20:33Speaker 4: He gets up and he sings with me. And I
- 20:35Speaker 4: didn't tell him for years after that. He wasn't supposed to.
- 20:38Speaker 4: It was just me.
- 20:40Speaker 3: That's brittant, that of it. I can imagine Joe. I
- 20:42Speaker 3: can imagine Joe Green being being a very scary mind,
- 20:46Speaker 3: not to be masked with.
- 20:48Speaker 4: Yes, that's exactly the truth. Tunch came back to the
- 20:51Speaker 4: huddle one day in training camp. He was bent over
- 20:54Speaker 4: and gasping for air, and I said, what happened? He goes, well,
- 20:57Speaker 4: when Joe tells you not to hold him, he means
- 20:59Speaker 4: don't hold him. Joe gave him a nice bowlo.
- 21:03Speaker 5: Punch as most they call him Mainjo Gray's definitely somebody
- 21:07Speaker 5: mesked with. But haven't said about Craig. I've just sort
- 21:09Speaker 5: of read somewhere. It's not really a Steelers related question,
- 21:12Speaker 5: but I read that you did boxing and you did
- 21:15Speaker 5: something else as well, with something that skips my mind.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Think it was the strongest man and a stroke I
- 21:21Speaker 4: did a lot of stupid things. You know, I love
- 21:23Speaker 4: competing and put myself in a competition mode. You know,
- 21:28Speaker 4: I love to try different things. A matter of fact,
- 21:30Speaker 4: one of the latest things I was and I don't
- 21:31Speaker 4: know if it's possible, but the Dinney Stones up in Scotland,
- 21:35Speaker 4: the man good Stones, right, you know, I thought about
- 21:38Speaker 4: maybe taking the family over to take a whack at
- 21:41Speaker 4: it train up and see if we could have a
- 21:43Speaker 4: whack of dead bad boy. But I used to. I
- 21:45Speaker 4: love stuff like that. And of course, you know, the
- 21:47Speaker 4: Steelers were always big in the strength, you know department,
- 21:50Speaker 4: the offensive line, so that's something. John Cold was such
- 21:53Speaker 4: a great competitor. He won the NFL Strongest Man and
- 21:57Speaker 4: of course he was fourth in the World's Strongest Man.
- 21:59Speaker 4: I believe it was ninth ten eighty. So yeah, I've
- 22:02Speaker 4: done a lot of that stupid stuff, and even professional sumo, which,
- 22:06Speaker 4: let me tell you that's a bad, bad We'll apologize
- 22:09Speaker 4: for bringing it up.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Amount of many's owns.
- 22:12Speaker 3: We're all gonna be going to be googling now, Craig
- 22:14Speaker 3: will be professional sumos and they're done with this sad podcast.
- 22:18Speaker 4: I can tell you it's it's bad. It's not good.
- 22:23Speaker 2: In the off season, just to be at the.
- 22:25Speaker 4: Whole giant men wearing diapers. It's not.
- 22:30Speaker 3: Yeah, you have this curious noss. That's I don't know
- 22:33Speaker 3: if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
- 22:36Speaker 4: Let it. Let it go, man, just let it I
- 22:40Speaker 4: guess the Yeah, Craig.
- 22:41Speaker 1: The one thing that we're trying to do is, you know,
- 22:44Speaker 1: for especially for staters, fans and finals of the NFL
- 22:46Speaker 1: over here is where we're trying to make them feel
- 22:48Speaker 1: a little bit closer to sin then some college Obviously
- 22:51Speaker 1: we're coming into the second.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Week nowive second and third week of trailing come a
- 22:55Speaker 2: Friday Night Lights was last week. What's what's have I
- 22:59Speaker 2: been like so far, Craig.
- 23:00Speaker 1: You know you're seeing George Peckins how they're really interesting
- 23:03Speaker 1: comes so far? What was it really like in the trenches?
- 23:07Speaker 1: It looks like great fun as well for a start.
- 23:09Speaker 4: Oh, there's no doubt about it. I mean, you gotta understand,
- 23:12Speaker 4: fat is where it's at. It's the hogs up front,
- 23:15Speaker 4: the guys in the trenches, trench fighting, tackle to tackle,
- 23:18Speaker 4: linebacker death to you know, the keystres of the offensive line.
- 23:22Speaker 4: That's where all the action is. That's where the game's
- 23:24Speaker 4: won and lost, and the Steels have done a great
- 23:27Speaker 4: job before to find their front line. I'm really excited
- 23:30Speaker 4: about what we got going on here, and one of
- 23:32Speaker 4: the neat things that has happened, you know, because you've
- 23:35Speaker 4: got a guy like Rodert Jones competing with Dan Moore
- 23:38Speaker 4: at the starting left tackle position, and you've got Kendrick Green.
- 23:42Speaker 4: Kendrick Green, if you saw Friday Night Lights, he's the
- 23:45Speaker 4: backup center six four three and fifteen pounds. But by golly,
- 23:49Speaker 4: they put him at a tight end. He trapped a
- 23:51Speaker 4: couple of guys acts, I mean, just blew somebody up
- 23:54Speaker 4: and then hit somebody on an iso and then they
- 23:57Speaker 4: put him out on the flat. He caught the ball
- 23:59Speaker 4: and actually ran with the ball. Now you got to
- 24:01Speaker 4: understand that comes from the Baltimore Ravens. They use a
- 24:05Speaker 4: guy named Patrick Ricard who is a three hundred pounder
- 24:08Speaker 4: and they use him in a variety of ways. And
- 24:10Speaker 4: it's very unique because if you it takes a unique
- 24:14Speaker 4: animal to be able to do those assorted things. Block
- 24:17Speaker 4: from that position, catch the ball, and your three hundred
- 24:20Speaker 4: plus pounds. Well that's what they did with Patrick Ricard,
- 24:23Speaker 4: and that's what Kendrick Green did the other day, and
- 24:26Speaker 4: I'm excited by because it's a new rinkle that I
- 24:28Speaker 4: think is going to add to Matt Canada's weaponry.
- 24:32Speaker 3: I did see a puno on social media of Kendrick
- 24:37Speaker 3: Green carrying the football and that was definitely a sight
- 24:39Speaker 3: to be seen. So it'll be interesting to see if
- 24:42Speaker 3: they can work and make some go line situations as
- 24:44Speaker 3: at fullback props. You know, just as you say, as
- 24:47Speaker 3: that additional wrinkle to my Canada's offense.
- 24:50Speaker 4: No doubt about it. It's a nice rakle because here's
- 24:53Speaker 4: the thing about it. He can block from the h
- 24:57Speaker 4: back position, he can block from an inline tight end
- 25:00Speaker 4: end position, he can block from the full back position,
- 25:03Speaker 4: and you're not quite sure what he's coming in when
- 25:05Speaker 4: you have different personnel packages. You know, if you have
- 25:08Speaker 4: a twelve package, you got one running back and two
- 25:11Speaker 4: tight ends or what thirteen, one and three? You know
- 25:14Speaker 4: what is he a running back? Is he a tighter?
- 25:17Speaker 4: You know, it's it's very difficult in the space of
- 25:20Speaker 4: time that defensive coordinators have to react to new personnel
- 25:23Speaker 4: coming out of the field to be able to put
- 25:25Speaker 4: in their version of what they want to be installed.
- 25:28Speaker 4: Against that personnel package. So it does create some sort
- 25:32Speaker 4: of a discomfort, I would think for opposing defensive coordinators
- 25:36Speaker 4: and certainly for Kendrick. He's got to love it. I mean,
- 25:39Speaker 4: it's a fat guy's dream to catch the ball and run,
- 25:41Speaker 4: you know what I mean. That's what we that's what
- 25:43Speaker 4: we love to do. Man and obviously Craig.
- 25:47Speaker 3: We're just four days away now the first preseason game
- 25:49Speaker 3: against Top of Bay, the first time we're going to
- 25:51Speaker 3: see the statters on the field since December of last year.
- 25:55Speaker 3: What are you most excited about up four most seeing
- 25:59Speaker 3: in the first season game?
- 26:01Speaker 4: Well, as a player, the most the most exciting thing
- 26:04Speaker 4: for me was number one because I was in the
- 26:08Speaker 4: dorm that had no air conditioning, horsehair stuffed mattresses, and
- 26:12Speaker 4: the food was sometimes a little rough. I was going
- 26:15Speaker 4: to a hotel that had air conditioning, nice mattresses and
- 26:19Speaker 4: room service. So you know the fact that that was
- 26:22Speaker 4: number one as a player. But as a broadcaster, what
- 26:25Speaker 4: I want to see. I want to see who jumps out,
- 26:28Speaker 4: you know, because special teams are going to be huge.
- 26:31Speaker 4: Special teams are first look at guys. It's kind of
- 26:34Speaker 4: an introduction one oh one to the NFL and that's
- 26:38Speaker 4: where you can win a place you can pay rent
- 26:40Speaker 4: with on special teams by working there when you're not
- 26:45Speaker 4: in the too deep So who jumps out makes the plays?
- 26:49Speaker 4: And the other thing about is watching the young guys
- 26:51Speaker 4: because it's the first NFL action. Does anybody look like
- 26:54Speaker 4: they got the you know, the deer in the headlights? Look?
- 26:57Speaker 4: You know, guys able to do the things that they've
- 27:00Speaker 4: been doing at trading camp. Take the practices and put
- 27:03Speaker 4: them in a stadium and those are the things that
- 27:05Speaker 4: you want to see. Can you actually make that transition
- 27:08Speaker 4: when the lights get big and the stage is high?
- 27:10Speaker 5: Do you think of it as well, Tampa Bay? Can
- 27:12Speaker 5: you just hold us? And maybe what you expect to
- 27:14Speaker 5: see from them? Obviously with the preseason, a lot of
- 27:16Speaker 5: teams are going to be very conservative, not want to
- 27:18Speaker 5: get many injuries in. But what do you expect to
- 27:20Speaker 5: see from them?
- 27:21Speaker 4: You know, you don't really know where what their quality
- 27:24Speaker 4: of play is. You know they're not going to put
- 27:25Speaker 4: your veterans out there. You only got three preseason games.
- 27:28Speaker 4: Now you have to understand, I cut from the era
- 27:30Speaker 4: of Chuck Nolwan that we had four preseason games and
- 27:33Speaker 4: one time we would play in the first quarter, the
- 27:36Speaker 4: starters would play about one quarter. Second, the second game,
- 27:39Speaker 4: you'd play to halftime. Third, you'd go into the third quarter,
- 27:43Speaker 4: and sometimes in the fourth preseason game, unlike what they
- 27:46Speaker 4: used to do now where they wouldn't play any starters
- 27:49Speaker 4: in the fourth preseason you would play into the fourth
- 27:51Speaker 4: quarter and make sure your conditioning was right for the
- 27:54Speaker 4: season opener. Well, the fact of the matter was, Chuck
- 27:56Speaker 4: pulled us out after the second quarter. We sat out halftime,
- 28:00Speaker 4: third quarter, halfway through the fourth quarter, we're playing the Giants,
- 28:04Speaker 4: and Chuck decides we got to win the game. And
- 28:06Speaker 4: our line coach comes home and goes, you guys are
- 28:08Speaker 4: back in. Now we're playing guys that are all gonna
- 28:11Speaker 4: be cut. There's guys out there that are gonna be
- 28:13Speaker 4: shoe salesmen working in department stores. They're digging ditches the
- 28:17Speaker 4: next week. And we got to go in and if
- 28:19Speaker 4: we don't win the game, this is gonna look really bad.
- 28:22Speaker 4: And now we're all we're all like like all all,
- 28:25Speaker 4: you know, iired and sweaty, and you know we've been
- 28:29Speaker 4: sitting for almost half a game, so we're stiffer than
- 28:32Speaker 4: the tin woodsman. From the Wizard of Oz gad zooks Man.
- 28:36Speaker 4: So you know, we go back in and fortunately we're
- 28:38Speaker 4: able to win the game. But that's how important it
- 28:40Speaker 4: was the coach. No he wanted to establish, Hey, you
- 28:43Speaker 4: gotta win. This is how you win. And now it's
- 28:46Speaker 4: just part and parcel of who he was. So the
- 28:49Speaker 4: preseason still has it still has its moments that you want.
- 28:52Speaker 4: You want to establish a rhythm on offense in the
- 28:55Speaker 4: first first drive, be able to get let's get out
- 28:57Speaker 4: there and get a couple of first downs out of
- 29:00Speaker 4: touchdown drive. Defensively, can we come out and get off
- 29:03Speaker 4: the field in one series. These are all things that
- 29:06Speaker 4: you look forward to. The inside linebacker position, there's a
- 29:09Speaker 4: lot of guys going on between the Land and Roberts
- 29:11Speaker 4: and Kawan, Alexander and Cole Holkan. That's gonna be a
- 29:14Speaker 4: real battle, you know. I mean, there's there's so many
- 29:16Speaker 4: battles going on. It's gonna be a lot of fun.
- 29:19Speaker 4: So I'd say stay tuned, everybody. It's gonna be a good,
- 29:22Speaker 4: good time to put a good little fist in the
- 29:24Speaker 4: face football.
- 29:25Speaker 1: You know, well for your stad there, but Chuck Nolan
- 29:27Speaker 1: for four games a preseason it's not that long ago.
- 29:30Speaker 2: East.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Out of the four games, I'll have to say I
- 29:32Speaker 1: prefer the four games. I know that it's a whole
- 29:35Speaker 1: different conversation, but I loved it. I guess I'm gonna
- 29:38Speaker 1: put you under pressure here early so early Saturday morning
- 29:42Speaker 1: our time in Ireland.
- 29:43Speaker 2: This books game.
- 29:44Speaker 1: And if you had to give us two or three
- 29:46Speaker 1: cheesy the game on Friday Saturday morning, what would it
- 29:50Speaker 1: be for you?
- 29:50Speaker 4: Keys to the game? All right? Number one, here you go,
- 29:54Speaker 4: stand out somewhere, get that big hit, make that big catch,
- 29:58Speaker 4: make that tackle, get your self noticed. Number two, Be
- 30:02Speaker 4: consistent in all your work. Pay attention to the details.
- 30:06Speaker 4: Details are everything for every professional ballplayer, really in all sports.
- 30:11Speaker 4: But think about it if you're if you're Broderick Jones,
- 30:14Speaker 4: one of the details you want to get make sure
- 30:16Speaker 4: when you pass set don't be head heavy. He has
- 30:19Speaker 4: a tendency to get head heavy. When you get head heavy,
- 30:21Speaker 4: you lunge a little bit rather than punch with your
- 30:24Speaker 4: hands unpassed against the pass rusher, you lock your inside leg.
- 30:27Speaker 4: You give away the inside So that's one of the
- 30:30Speaker 4: details that you want to see from a guy like
- 30:32Speaker 4: Broderick Jones. Make sure you're punching the full extension. You know,
- 30:35Speaker 4: we've got Kelvin Austin the third, who let me tell
- 30:38Speaker 4: you something. This guy, if he blows down the sidelines
- 30:41Speaker 4: on a go route, this guy is fast. He is fast.
- 30:45Speaker 4: I mean, if there is if you have some ladies
- 30:47Speaker 4: on the sidelines with skirts, they better hang on to
- 30:49Speaker 4: him otherwise are gonna the Marilyn Monroe moment, all right,
- 30:52Speaker 4: because this guy goes by boom and man, it's you know,
- 30:55Speaker 4: he's just sucking up the air going down the sidelines.
- 30:58Speaker 4: That's how fast he is. So can you get the
- 31:01Speaker 4: ball to him? Does he make the catch? There's just
- 31:03Speaker 4: so many things that if you just take time to
- 31:05Speaker 4: watch the game within the game, it's really very exciting.
- 31:09Speaker 4: Look out for Keanu Betton, you know, young draft choice
- 31:12Speaker 4: the Steelers got. This guy has got a club that,
- 31:16Speaker 4: by golly, you know, he gets down the trenches that
- 31:18Speaker 4: he bangs with his club one way. Then you and
- 31:21Speaker 4: big thick guys move, you know. I mean, that's a
- 31:24Speaker 4: pretty good club. When you can whack on a guy
- 31:26Speaker 4: and you're playing against a three hundred and twenty pounder
- 31:29Speaker 4: and you move that guy with that club. Says something
- 31:31Speaker 4: about your power and the violence inherit and your movement.
- 31:34Speaker 4: So there's just so much there. Look at it, watch it,
- 31:37Speaker 4: enjoy it, and then you just watch how they proceed.
- 31:40Speaker 4: One of the things that I've been so blessed in
- 31:42Speaker 4: my career in broadcasting is to watch so many great
- 31:45Speaker 4: players from the first day to the last day. I
- 31:48Speaker 4: saw every one of Ben Roethlisberger's games in person, you know,
- 31:53Speaker 4: over the years, his eighteen years, because I was I
- 31:56Speaker 4: was so blessed to be able to stand there on
- 31:57Speaker 4: the sidelines or in the booth and be able to
- 31:59Speaker 4: watch watch the game, and and and to watch these
- 32:02Speaker 4: careers unfold. It's just it's really terrific. And I can't
- 32:05Speaker 4: say enough about how wonderful it is to be able to,
- 32:09Speaker 4: you know, watch from the sidelines all.
- 32:10Speaker 1: The time on that game, Craig For people in Ireland.
- 32:14Speaker 1: On the island of Ireland is ge Go. It's free
- 32:18Speaker 1: if you sign up, folks, and you can you can
- 32:20Speaker 1: watch the broadcast early Saturday morning Art time, and if
- 32:23Speaker 1: you want to hear more from Craig Wealthy on mister
- 32:26Speaker 1: Max Starks, you can listen three to five pm Our time,
- 32:29Speaker 1: Ireland time each day too. In the locker room on
- 32:32Speaker 1: the sitisation radio or get it on podcast. Craig, I
- 32:35Speaker 1: feel like we're gonna be talking a lot this season,
- 32:37Speaker 1: so we will.
- 32:37Speaker 2: We will chat to you soon.
- 32:39Speaker 1: We appreciate your time and enjoy this week, account and
- 32:42Speaker 1: enjoy the first week of preseason.
- 32:43Speaker 4: Well, thank you, thank you so much for having me.
- 32:46Speaker 4: It's a joy to be with you men. And remember
- 32:48Speaker 4: Ghost Steelers and if you got a chance to eat
- 32:51Speaker 4: a donut.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Honestly, that was that was such a great That was
- 32:57Speaker 1: such a good job. And Craig, like Jilly, it just
- 33:01Speaker 1: shows you, as we say, he's great crack, but also
- 33:04Speaker 1: his dub say as well, he's God, isn't it.
- 33:06Speaker 2: He's hilarious.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's I had to put myself on mute there,
- 33:12Speaker 3: Mike a couple of times. I was cracking up here,
- 33:14Speaker 3: Dan and Drada. But now fantastic to hear some of
- 33:17Speaker 3: the stories that Greig had about his time with Steelers.
- 33:19Speaker 3: You mean, you know, he definitely is a true storyteller.
- 33:23Speaker 3: He was talking about getting caught by me and Joe
- 33:26Speaker 3: Green to get up and tapping his buddy when you
- 33:29Speaker 3: looking on the show to back him up, and just
- 33:32Speaker 3: even hearing about you know, difference in training camp between
- 33:35Speaker 3: you know, forty years ago and today and sleeping on
- 33:38Speaker 3: mattresses stuff with Hey and all that. Some some really
- 33:41Speaker 3: great stories and I'm just a fantastic opportunity to get
- 33:44Speaker 3: him insight from one of you know, the Steelers greats.
- 33:48Speaker 1: We've come a long way, Jimmy. I I'll jump on
- 33:50Speaker 1: one of the main things this weekend. This is really
- 33:52Speaker 1: important for you know, fans of the Ireland lads. You know,
- 33:56Speaker 1: it's it's it's massive because obviously the Staters are Fleet.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Preseason games come up before they played the Nighters Week one, which.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Is slowly, slowly.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Creeping up on the plots, you know, like we're getting there,
- 34:05Speaker 1: about four weeks to go to four weeks.
- 34:07Speaker 2: And change the box is coming up this Friday night.
- 34:10Speaker 1: I'd say Saturday morning, but it's midnight Saturday morning of
- 34:12Speaker 1: Ireland time. The Bills game is Saturday night at eleven
- 34:16Speaker 1: thirty in the evening, and then the Falcons game is
- 34:19Speaker 1: Thursday night slash Friday morning at twelve thirty in the morning.
- 34:23Speaker 1: The biggest reason for this is usually if you're a
- 34:26Speaker 1: fan of the NFL in Ireland or in the UK
- 34:29Speaker 1: and Europe, there are only certain ways to watch the
- 34:31Speaker 1: preseason on different platforms. But one of the great initiatives
- 34:36Speaker 1: that we have seen from the Steelers in this preseason
- 34:39Speaker 1: is that the games are going to the preseason games.
- 34:42Speaker 1: Those three games are going to be available on ge
- 34:44Speaker 1: Go and you may be aware of what that is
- 34:48Speaker 1: if you're not, it's basically like NFL Game Pass with
- 34:51Speaker 1: the GA. That's the best way to describe it that.
- 34:53Speaker 2: If you do not have.
- 34:54Speaker 1: An account, just search online ge Go. We'll try and
- 34:57Speaker 1: pull a link in the bio as well. If you
- 35:00Speaker 1: sign up with a free account, you can watch those
- 35:03Speaker 1: three games for free. It'll be live and on demand
- 35:07Speaker 1: up to seventy two hours after the game.
- 35:10Speaker 2: And Diego is available.
- 35:12Speaker 1: On your phone, it's available on the computer. It's also
- 35:15Speaker 1: available on like fire TV like. I've used it this
- 35:17Speaker 1: year and I've never had a problem with us. I'm
- 35:19Speaker 1: really looking forward to to watching the games. This is
- 35:22Speaker 1: pretty cool for any fan, and I have to stay it.
- 35:25Speaker 1: It's on the island of Ireland, so if you're an
- 35:27Speaker 1: EDI r OI you can use this service to watch
- 35:29Speaker 1: the preseason games for free. Pretty cool if you're a
- 35:33Speaker 1: Staelers fan, if you're a general NFL fan, you have
- 35:35Speaker 1: the opportunity to watch three great games in pre season
- 35:39Speaker 1: and get to learn more about the Steelers team as
- 35:42Speaker 1: we go in to the new season.
- 35:43Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm sure everybody on the isle of Ireland are
- 35:47Speaker 5: familiar with Diego. You know, they provide a great streaming
- 35:50Speaker 5: service for you know, fas, not just in Ireland but
- 35:53Speaker 5: all over the place.
- 35:55Speaker 2: You know, it's very popular, as we know.
- 35:57Speaker 5: The great thing about it, it's going to spread awareness of
- 35:59Speaker 5: the game of American football on the island. So and
- 36:02Speaker 5: hopefully it'll make a few Steelers fans as well. People
- 36:04Speaker 5: will be like, oh, I'll shoot into this, see what
- 36:06Speaker 5: it's like. Before you know it five years in the line,
- 36:08Speaker 5: they're massive Steeler funds and they're going to training camp
- 36:10Speaker 5: just like us.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Fingers crossed. But who knows.
- 36:15Speaker 5: As I said, it's it's good to get the GA involved,
- 36:18Speaker 5: you know, we spoke about it earlier on in the year.
- 36:21Speaker 5: But hopefully it's going to spread awareness for funds, you know,
- 36:25Speaker 5: and obviously make a few more Steelers fans as well.
- 36:27Speaker 5: So it's only a positive and it's only the start
- 36:30Speaker 5: of what's going to be at like a massive you know,
- 36:33Speaker 5: turning point for the NFL on the island of Ireland.
- 36:35Speaker 2: So long may have continue, Jillie.
- 36:37Speaker 1: It's a natural progression, isn't it. You know we were
- 36:40Speaker 1: in Croker with the GA with with the Steelers and
- 36:43Speaker 1: just that that was such a great day. And now
- 36:44Speaker 1: to see such an easy access for it for wherever
- 36:47Speaker 1: we are the island if we want to watch one
- 36:49Speaker 1: of the games, if we're weather holidays right being just
- 36:51Speaker 1: over their phone and watch it.
- 36:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you know, seeing the level of accessibility
- 36:58Speaker 3: for the NFL and Ireland, you know, grow is fantastic. Michael,
- 37:02Speaker 3: I mean the likes of myself, yourself and Day. I
- 37:04Speaker 3: mean ten eleven years ago we were banging the drum
- 37:07Speaker 3: of American football in Ireland and nowhere, but nobody was listening.
- 37:11Speaker 3: And now the fact that GA are getting involved or
- 37:14Speaker 3: opening the milk to people who might have a passing
- 37:15Speaker 3: interest or you know, a slight bit more interest but
- 37:19Speaker 3: I don't know where to watch it, and it's just
- 37:22Speaker 3: it's great to open them up to to to all
- 37:25Speaker 3: sorts of fans, you know, general sporting fans, and uh, look,
- 37:28Speaker 3: I hope it's just the beginning of a massive period
- 37:31Speaker 3: of growth for NFL in Ireland then and indeed American
- 37:34Speaker 3: football in general of the island of.
- 37:35Speaker 1: Our absolutely GEG dot I E again, Folks is available
- 37:42Speaker 1: at both sides of the border, either of Ireland R
- 37:44Speaker 1: O I L I.
- 37:45Speaker 2: You can go on and watch it.
- 37:48Speaker 1: As we said, we have to use it like I
- 37:50Speaker 1: used it a couple of weeks school by a little
- 37:52Speaker 1: lodes and.
- 37:53Speaker 2: It's a great service.
- 37:54Speaker 1: It's available with so many devices, so we'll we'll put
- 37:56Speaker 1: that in the commons and do do reach out to us.
- 38:00Speaker 1: If you watch it, use a hashtag Theaters Ireland and
- 38:02Speaker 1: take a picture. And I would say folks because I
- 38:05Speaker 1: know there's a lot of people that are listening to
- 38:07Speaker 1: this podcast to support the game of Ireland, to support
- 38:09Speaker 1: the staters growth an Ireland. If you're not, if you
- 38:11Speaker 1: maybe are adopting this theaters as your second team and
- 38:15Speaker 1: gave the stream a watch because you might see some
- 38:18Speaker 1: surprises during the broadcast as well. Who knows, right, we've
- 38:22Speaker 1: got some questions here. I'm going to shout them out
- 38:24Speaker 1: like we've got three or four minutes, so we'll get
- 38:26Speaker 1: advice again for everyone with the questions. Dave, let's see
- 38:30Speaker 1: if you want to go first here and putting the
- 38:31Speaker 1: under pressure here now I'm meant Mike, who's a massive
- 38:33Speaker 1: Saeter stunt originally from Ireland living in the UK. He
- 38:37Speaker 1: has said big interest in iol Kendrick Green doing the
- 38:40Speaker 1: fullback given the nature of the positions, is is a
- 38:43Speaker 1: viable switch. Delighted with the move. It's really great to
- 38:47Speaker 1: see him progressing and doing well.
- 38:49Speaker 5: What do you think, Yeah, it's it's it's an interesting one.
- 38:52Speaker 5: You know, Craig imagined that there earlier on in the podcast.
- 38:56Speaker 5: He's close to what three hundred pounds and he's got
- 38:58Speaker 5: to be moving position. It's it's it's maybe looked at
- 39:01Speaker 5: the potential resurrection of his career. You know, obviously what's
- 39:04Speaker 5: everything has happened with the fallback position, you know, with
- 39:06Speaker 5: Monte Bodybond retiring unexpectedly and Connor Herward, he's being like
- 39:11Speaker 5: the only talked about fallback in that room. So it's
- 39:13Speaker 5: good to get him some competition. So yeah, with Canda Green,
- 39:17Speaker 5: it's potentially a good resurrection of his career if you like.
- 39:20Speaker 5: You know, at the same time, he's maybe going to
- 39:22Speaker 5: feel that he can do a job for us, you know,
- 39:24Speaker 5: on on the O lane. But again it's it's it's
- 39:26Speaker 5: another potential, you know, position bottle. What can only help
- 39:30Speaker 5: the team, so fingers crossed it works out for both
- 39:34Speaker 5: himself and for us because it's only going to improve
- 39:37Speaker 5: or improved just how we are. So yeah, it's it's
- 39:41Speaker 5: it's it's only going to help us. Really absolutely, thanks
- 39:45Speaker 5: for Mike pro sending that question. And Green has looked
- 39:47Speaker 5: good so.
- 39:47Speaker 1: Far and in training camp at fallback RTE twelve among
- 39:51Speaker 1: centers with an over world great at sixty seven pointing
- 39:54Speaker 1: one last year with PFF, so you know, let's see
- 39:58Speaker 1: what happens this season. Keep keeping up the positivity. So
- 40:01Speaker 1: I'm definitely enjoying that. I appreciate Mike getting the question.
- 40:04Speaker 1: And we've also got a few questions from Stephen the
- 40:07Speaker 1: thigh time. Much Stephen for continuing to listen to this podcast.
- 40:10Speaker 1: He's sending three questions, We're gonna go any meaning might
- 40:13Speaker 1: name o here and say Jimmy for you, and my
- 40:15Speaker 1: friend will Todder Morgan make an appearance a quarterback? And
- 40:18Speaker 1: Willie out play Mason Rudolph. So Stephen obviously means that
- 40:22Speaker 1: in relation to the game against the Bucks this week.
- 40:25Speaker 1: I guess first off on that, like we're recording this
- 40:28Speaker 1: earlier in the week, so we haven't heard from coach
- 40:30Speaker 1: Tomlin yet. Do you expect to see much Fromkenny Picktt
- 40:33Speaker 1: as well this week? Maybe a couple of series maybe.
- 40:37Speaker 3: I'm not sure Michael to be To be honest, I
- 40:39Speaker 3: think it's Pickett does make an appearance. I think purely
- 40:43Speaker 3: to knock off the rust and not that there would
- 40:45Speaker 3: be much obviously would have been working out, you know,
- 40:48Speaker 3: throughout the offseason. He might get a series, maybe two.
- 40:51Speaker 3: And I think at that stage we're gonna see Mitch
- 40:54Speaker 3: Trubisky come in a good bit as well. Obviously at
- 40:58Speaker 3: the moment he is the the strongest backup that we have,
- 41:03Speaker 3: given that he was our starter from the early to
- 41:05Speaker 3: half and last season, So I think we'll see a
- 41:07Speaker 3: good bit out of him as well, for perhaps until
- 41:09Speaker 3: you know, late in the second early late in the
- 41:13Speaker 3: second quarter, early the third quorder, and I think at
- 41:15Speaker 3: that stage it would be on that diship for QB three.
- 41:18Speaker 3: And given the fact that Mason Rudolph was away from
- 41:21Speaker 3: the Steeters for a couple of seasons that is now back,
- 41:24Speaker 3: I mean that could have that can definitely vote well
- 41:26Speaker 3: for him. But I'm interested to see what Conner Morgan
- 41:28Speaker 3: can do. He's an unknown at this stage. Obviously, he
- 41:32Speaker 3: was a starting quarterback at Minnesota and the Steaders maybe
- 41:36Speaker 3: they brought him in because they saw something in him,
- 41:39Speaker 3: and maybe he's just a camp arm where I think
- 41:42Speaker 3: it's one of the most the more intriguing camp battles
- 41:45Speaker 3: to that QB three spot, because we all know, you know,
- 41:48Speaker 3: there's all this top for for you know, about a
- 41:51Speaker 3: dB battles and inside linebacker battles, but no one's really
- 41:55Speaker 3: talking about the battle for QB three, So it could
- 41:57Speaker 3: be interesting to keep an eye on it in the
- 41:59Speaker 3: in the preseason.
- 42:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's it's it's pretty interesting because if I
- 42:03Speaker 1: even go back to the game last week, the Hall
- 42:05Speaker 1: of Fame game, granted the series weren't playing, I was
- 42:07Speaker 1: just sitting watching going exactly how far down the depth
- 42:10Speaker 1: start to actually go?
- 42:10Speaker 2: I guess for me, if we finish off.
- 42:12Speaker 1: The podcast, last and one thing we'd like to see
- 42:14Speaker 1: this week against the Bucks going up and the game
- 42:17Speaker 1: is on GEA go as we said on early Saturday morning,
- 42:20Speaker 1: and I'd like to see Mike Tomlin, our coach.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Tomlin gave Kenny Pickett at.
- 42:24Speaker 1: Least half the first quarter, get get some reps, ink
- 42:27Speaker 1: at the confidence and get two to three to four passes,
- 42:30Speaker 1: or try and get it down the field, get one score.
- 42:33Speaker 1: If he gets the score, get awful field. Relax, and
- 42:35Speaker 1: you know, I agree it would be good to see
- 42:37Speaker 1: Tyler Warton in there.
- 42:38Speaker 2: Jimmy as well.
- 42:39Speaker 1: Yeahdeve one thing you want to see against the Bucks
- 42:42Speaker 1: this week before we before we read up.
- 42:44Speaker 5: Well, the number one thing I want to see is
- 42:46Speaker 5: absolutely no injuries. That's one thing you can't afford, as
- 42:50Speaker 5: we know. But you know you mentioned McKenny Packett. Of
- 42:54Speaker 5: course that's what we want to see. But what I
- 42:56Speaker 5: want to see really is some of the rookies getting
- 42:58Speaker 5: some first team reps, you know, with Broderick Jones and stuff,
- 43:02Speaker 5: you know, pushing for a starting job already it's creating news.
- 43:05Speaker 5: But also there's three specific players I'm really looking forward
- 43:08Speaker 5: to seeing. I want to see a lot of Calvin Austin.
- 43:10Speaker 5: You know, Craig spoke about it earlier. You know, he's
- 43:12Speaker 5: the lightning quick and obviously Nick Herbigs and another one
- 43:15Speaker 5: really good stuff coming out of that training candle.
- 43:17Speaker 2: But Nick and also Atony McFarland.
- 43:20Speaker 5: He's going to get a lot of raps as well
- 43:21Speaker 5: as a spect so then three players specifically I'm really
- 43:25Speaker 5: looking forward to seeing. But again, the main hang guy
- 43:27Speaker 5: I want to see is no injuries, please, But I
- 43:30Speaker 5: hope just to round up Jimmy as you want to see,
- 43:32Speaker 5: I said of the acquisition, or do you just hobby
- 43:34Speaker 5: Football's back on?
- 43:36Speaker 3: Honestly, I'm just looking forward to sitting down on Saturday
- 43:40Speaker 3: morning and putting one gag or you know wherever I
- 43:43Speaker 3: I'll be streaming the replay of the game and just
- 43:47Speaker 3: seeing that my Steelers in action. And honestly, I mean,
- 43:49Speaker 3: that's just that's all I want. That's all I've been
- 43:51Speaker 3: waiting for. It's route somewhere is give me football. You know,
- 43:54Speaker 3: I'm not a summer guy. I'm I'm definitely an on
- 43:57Speaker 3: him kind of guy. Give me those cold, cold the
- 44:00Speaker 3: evenings inside watching football throughout the winter and I'm happy.
- 44:03Speaker 4: So bring it on.
- 44:05Speaker 1: Well, folks, I had a glass. I really enjoyed chatting
- 44:07Speaker 1: these again and more so as well. Great to hear
- 44:09Speaker 1: from Craig, but great to hear again from fans from Ireland,
- 44:13Speaker 1: from the UK, from Europe. Really interacting with this podcast
- 44:15Speaker 1: for folks. If you are listening to this, please do
- 44:18Speaker 1: if you can maybe give us a rating and give
- 44:20Speaker 1: us some feedback as well. We we massively appreciate it.
- 44:23Speaker 1: You can use the hashtags Steelers Ireland reach out to
- 44:26Speaker 1: Steelers Ireland on X that's Twitter and I see I got.
- 44:30Speaker 2: A roll last week.
- 44:30Speaker 1: I wanted to get round of this week X Instagram
- 44:33Speaker 1: on TikTok. We'll see you next week as we get
- 44:36Speaker 1: past the Bucks game and look towards the next game

- 44:42Speaker 1: all the preseason games will be on gee I Go
- 44:45Speaker 1: Gee Go dot I. All you gotta do is sign up.

- 44:54Speaker 2: we'll be standing up.
- 44:55Speaker 1: So interact with us on social media this weekend and
