- 0:15Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode fifty six of Cards
- 0:19Speaker 1: and Categories. I'm Mike Coolard from rasball dot Com, joined
- 0:23Speaker 1: as always by my very good friend Jeremy Brewer, also
- 0:26Speaker 1: from Rasball. How are you doing tonight, buddy?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Just fine. I'm like Jordan Walsher facing Righty's not really
- 0:32Speaker 2: here yet unless Ali Marvel lets me play, But otherwise
- 0:36Speaker 2: I'm here ready to go, as long as it's only
- 0:39Speaker 2: against lefties.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, when your team struggling and you're falling
- 0:43Speaker 1: all the way back to five hundred, obviously you got
- 0:45Speaker 1: to stick with that plan, right and keep Walker out
- 0:47Speaker 1: of the lineup.
- 0:49Speaker 2: It's the only logical thing. It's it's literally a moral support, yes, exactly.
- 0:54Speaker 2: So that's what I'm here for. Moral support tonight. This
- 0:56Speaker 2: is all on you unless you need me on the punch.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I'm just trusting this is gonna go fantastic.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Well maybe yeah, that can light a little bit of
- 1:04Speaker 1: a fire underneath them. As we're recording this on August fourteenth,
- 1:08Speaker 1: because yeah, our tradition of kind of a huge piece
- 1:12Speaker 1: of MLB news dropping right after we record the pod
- 1:15Speaker 1: kept up last week as we missed the entire news
- 1:18Speaker 1: cycle on the Chicago White Sox firing Pedro Griffall. He
- 1:21Speaker 1: was fired the morning after we recorded our pod last week.
- 1:25Speaker 1: So this thing dropped and then Paedri Griffall dropped off
- 1:29Speaker 1: the grid with it. So with that they cleaned house.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Charlie Montoya also left and they put in Grady Sizemore
- 1:36Speaker 1: as the manager up in Chicago, well down in Chicago
- 1:39Speaker 1: for me, up for you, and so they are going
- 1:44Speaker 1: to roll with Sizemore for the rest of the year.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Who I mean, the White Sox Twitter is getting a
- 1:49Speaker 1: little thirsty over him. It's very intense out there, as
- 1:51Speaker 1: you know, certainly an upgrade going from Griffall to Sizemore
- 1:55Speaker 1: on our TVs out there. But this does really put
- 1:59Speaker 1: the act into like the I mean maybe even just
- 2:04Speaker 1: like the first nail of the coffin for the White
- 2:06Speaker 1: Sox season as they I do think they're going to
- 2:09Speaker 1: do this. I think that they're going to break the
- 2:11Speaker 1: single season record for losses beating out the sixty two Mets,
- 2:15Speaker 1: because yeah, I've got I've got some fun stuff up
- 2:18Speaker 1: on Baseball Reference to talk about here, but I want
- 2:21Speaker 1: to get your reaction first on what this means for
- 2:24Speaker 1: the White sox and your thoughts over're all on the
- 2:27Speaker 1: Patrogrif fall firing.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean this is like the one of those
- 2:33Speaker 2: firings is like is the biggest non news there is,
- 2:37Speaker 2: Like it was it was more of a question of
- 2:39Speaker 2: when was the timing, when was it gonna happen because
- 2:41Speaker 2: you had to have a fall guy. So I actually
- 2:43Speaker 2: was a little surprised that it happened at this point
- 2:46Speaker 2: because they still are dreadful. So do you want to
- 2:50Speaker 2: set somebody else up for failure? We'll see what size
- 2:53Speaker 2: more more does. I do think this is one of
- 2:56Speaker 2: those that if there's a chance of some excitement of
- 3:00Speaker 2: bringing some young guys up trying and again the system's
- 3:03Speaker 2: not that strong, so let's be clear, there's not like
- 3:06Speaker 2: a lot to bring up here, but like trying to
- 3:08Speaker 2: infuse a different attitude into the team, Like you know,
- 3:12Speaker 2: that's that's the hope. And you know, I think I
- 3:17Speaker 2: sense size more and I'm not an expert here by
- 3:19Speaker 2: since Sizemore is more of a player's coach than a
- 3:24Speaker 2: like grifall ever was, and so I think that that's
- 3:27Speaker 2: you know, being being a player that's been there and
- 3:30Speaker 2: knows what's going on. I think that's gonna be a
- 3:31Speaker 2: good good news for them. So we'll we'll see what
- 3:34Speaker 2: what really takes place. But I'm gonna go out on
- 3:38Speaker 2: a lemon and say, I don't know that they're going
- 3:40Speaker 2: to break that that record. This might be just enough
- 3:44Speaker 2: to shake them, shake them loose, but it's going to
- 3:47Speaker 2: take some special work from size more and the motivational
- 3:51Speaker 2: uh column the rest of the year.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, he's not starting off great. He's one
- 3:56Speaker 1: and four and I'm pretty sure they're losing right now.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Let me check it. As we are speaking, they are
- 4:03Speaker 1: tied right now with the Yankees one to one. Loon
- 4:06Speaker 1: Soto hit his fourth homer in two days, so it's
- 4:09Speaker 1: been a great series for him. But yeah, the White
- 4:12Speaker 1: Sox as we're speaking, are up to a record of
- 4:15Speaker 1: Oh it's a palindrome. It's a twenty nine to ninety two.
- 4:18Speaker 2: And that is say what one one in four is
- 4:20Speaker 2: actually like right on at targets.
- 4:23Speaker 1: It's I mean, if if he stays at two fifty,
- 4:26Speaker 1: I think they won't make it like, they won't make
- 4:28Speaker 1: the like clear the bar of the sixty two mets
- 4:31Speaker 1: that they will have the most losses. And I mean Frankly,
- 4:34Speaker 1: this team is awful, like they should because I was
- 4:37Speaker 1: looking at Baseball Reference and I'm not always like the
- 4:42Speaker 1: biggest fan of the Baseball Reference war over Fangrass War.
- 4:44Speaker 1: But as a team, they've put up collectively three point
- 4:48Speaker 1: eight war. Uh so that and of that three point
- 4:51Speaker 1: eight war, four point nine of it was Eric Fetty.
- 4:54Speaker 1: So everybody else on the team has collectively been negative.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I mean, it's a little fits. I think it's. No,
- 5:01Speaker 1: it's not because like the number of like negative guys
- 5:05Speaker 1: that they moved at the deadline and positive guys they
- 5:07Speaker 1: moved at the deadline, there were more negative guys. So
- 5:09Speaker 1: they actually lost war. Yeah, they lost war when Fetti
- 5:14Speaker 1: went out the door. But overall, you can just understand
- 5:18Speaker 1: with Fetti being such a huge chunk actually has more
- 5:22Speaker 1: war than the entire team. That shows how terrible everybody's
- 5:24Speaker 1: been to get those negative offsets, I mean, so awful. Look,
- 5:27Speaker 1: if you're on the Baseball Reference page, Nixon Zel played
- 5:32Speaker 1: nine I guess let's see, it was nine games in
- 5:35Speaker 1: the field, but let me see how many actual full
- 5:38Speaker 1: games he played. Now it's just total nine games. Guess
- 5:42Speaker 1: what Nixonzel's war over those nine games with the Chicago
- 5:45Speaker 1: White Sox.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Was I it's gotta be like a half war or
- 5:52Speaker 2: something like that.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Yeah, negative point six in nine games, that's and it
- 6:01Speaker 1: isn't that it possible? Yeah? He did it now in Baseball
- 6:04Speaker 1: Reference four and yeah, when you hit one, eleven, three, eight,
- 6:09Speaker 1: that's what I'll do that the It's also really hilarious
- 6:13Speaker 1: because on when you go to like the team page
- 6:15Speaker 1: on Baseball Reference, you get the top twelve players. Eric
- 6:18Speaker 1: Fetti is still number one in the War. Juan Wankatta,
- 6:22Speaker 1: who hasn't played since like the second week of the season,
- 6:26Speaker 1: I think, is currently ninth, still with point four. Let
- 6:29Speaker 1: me see when he last played. Yeah, he's last played
- 6:31Speaker 1: on April ninth, So he's just been hanging out. And
- 6:35Speaker 1: he was gonna finish with a top ten war season,
- 6:37Speaker 1: probably for this White Sox team, because he put up
- 6:41Speaker 1: some decent numbers and then blew out his uh all
- 6:44Speaker 1: his muscles I'm not even sure what's muscles is hurt
- 6:47Speaker 1: is right now on jan Mancatta. But I've also been
- 6:50Speaker 1: seeing lots of just pieces in terms of like how
- 6:54Speaker 1: did people miss so badly on this team. There's a
- 6:57Speaker 1: great piece that went up today from Patrick Dubuke at
- 7:00Speaker 1: Baseball Perspectives as he was just trying to figure out how,
- 7:04Speaker 1: you know, their projection systems were twenty eight games like
- 7:07Speaker 1: too high on the White Sox because that was the
- 7:10Speaker 1: thing is everybody had the White Sox peg for being
- 7:13Speaker 1: an awful, awful team this year, but somewhere in like
- 7:16Speaker 1: the mid sixties range, just because they did have decent
- 7:20Speaker 1: players and the rotation is all right. But everyone's trying
- 7:24Speaker 1: to like figure out, like, man, what does this mean
- 7:26Speaker 1: for my algorithm? Like what does this mean for how
- 7:28Speaker 1: we're calculating war? And I can tell you it just
- 7:31Speaker 1: can't calculate the White Sox because like, I don't.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Think it has anything to do with a bad calculation.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I think it's just a there's not an expectation to
- 7:38Speaker 2: be this bad is possible?
- 7:40Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, So, like you just.
- 7:42Speaker 2: You have the outer bounds come in on all your
- 7:44Speaker 2: models and say, like, well, if you flip a coin
- 7:48Speaker 2: enough times, it's gonna come up heads, right, So yeah,
- 7:52Speaker 2: that's what happened here.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and you're dealing with the weighted coin here a
- 7:56Speaker 1: little bit in terms of like, cause this has been
- 7:58Speaker 1: happening a lot with the Angel I think too, And
- 8:00Speaker 1: I think there's a lot of parallels between the Angels
- 8:03Speaker 1: and the White Socks because both have very meddlesome owners
- 8:07Speaker 1: who just really still have kind of like an anti
- 8:11Speaker 1: analytic analytics slant, and with that it just kind of
- 8:14Speaker 1: I think permeates. There's no way that both the Angels
- 8:17Speaker 1: and the White Sox have the best pregame plans, There's
- 8:20Speaker 1: no way they have the best training staffs, There's no
- 8:23Speaker 1: way that they're making every sort of opportunity you can
- 8:26Speaker 1: to be able to capitalize and turn yourself into a
- 8:28Speaker 1: better team. And what's happened is I think every other
- 8:32Speaker 1: team out there is pretty good at that stuff, because
- 8:35Speaker 1: it's pretty much like a basics to get in the
- 8:37Speaker 1: door to be able to compete in modern day sports.
- 8:40Speaker 1: It's just that these franchises are really getting left behind.
- 8:44Speaker 1: And yeah, because of that, I don't ever see like
- 8:47Speaker 1: an end to the malaise in Chicago because one, I mean,
- 8:51Speaker 1: the system's not great right now, But how do you
- 8:54Speaker 1: can you have any faith that Jerry Reinsdorf and Chris
- 8:57Speaker 1: Gets and whoever else he brings in are able to
- 9:01Speaker 1: take this team forward at all? And and just like
- 9:04Speaker 1: if you're playing with such limited resources compared to everybody else.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I also think about like the Willpon Mets. The Willpon
- 9:13Speaker 1: Mets like ran a really tiny, tiny sabermetric department considering
- 9:18Speaker 1: their resources, and now that that's flipped, you can see
- 9:21Speaker 1: where they've been performing, you know, more up to speed.
- 9:24Speaker 1: That it's just gonna be. It's gonna be along the
- 9:27Speaker 1: lays until like somebody wakes up within the White Sox
- 9:31Speaker 1: organization says, hey, like we're not doing anything right, Like
- 9:35Speaker 1: something's really got to change from the ground up.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Yeah, and at the end of the day, you know,
- 9:43Speaker 2: it's just a really tough rebuild because you don't have
- 9:46Speaker 2: the pieces to part out like that. That's really what
- 9:49Speaker 2: it comes down to is if you look at this,
- 9:52Speaker 2: they parted fetti out, what's crochet, what's left, Like, you're
- 9:58Speaker 2: not gonna get much for lose Robert at this point,
- 10:01Speaker 2: and so you don't you can't like hard a guy
- 10:06Speaker 2: out and like, Okay, we're just gonna restock the system,
- 10:08Speaker 2: like it's gonna take years of those number number one
- 10:11Speaker 2: picks for the next ten years. At this point, I
- 10:14Speaker 2: think there's a better, more ruler on that now.
- 10:16Speaker 1: But yeah, You're exactly right. They can't ever even get
- 10:19Speaker 1: a number one pick because they play in a major market.
- 10:21Speaker 1: The highest pick they can get is ten. So I
- 10:24Speaker 1: don't know, Like, isn't it like.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Back to back, like you can't have like you can
- 10:28Speaker 2: have it like a few times. We can't have it
- 10:32Speaker 2: like more than two times in the top ten or
- 10:33Speaker 2: something like that.
- 10:34Speaker 1: But at this point where they can't keep repeating, you know,
- 10:37Speaker 1: so it's like they're really stuck because there's also there's
- 10:42Speaker 1: no way that Jerry Reinstorf and Chris gets new that
- 10:44Speaker 1: rule until like somebody told them.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Right, yeah, wasn't their draft order in the last few years.
- 10:51Speaker 2: I need to go back and look.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know when exactly those rules kicked in,
- 10:56Speaker 1: but yeah, for next year, I know that they can't
- 10:58Speaker 1: draft higher than ten.
- 11:00Speaker 2: So yeah, that's just dreadful, Like the same thing happened
- 11:05Speaker 2: to that. Yes, So yeah, it's it's unbelievable that this
- 11:10Speaker 2: is going to be a conversation we have for a while.
- 11:12Speaker 2: The only good news here is we're probably the number
- 11:14Speaker 2: one podcast and talking about the White Sox and number two.
- 11:18Speaker 2: I haven't made it up to the ballpark up there
- 11:21Speaker 2: and the tickets are gonna be really cheap, so I
- 11:24Speaker 2: can sit anywhere. So I'm just in a selfish mindset here.
- 11:28Speaker 2: We can keep talking about the socks and we can't really.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Be wrong, So make sure you bring those binoculars to
- 11:35Speaker 1: check out Grady Sizemore. My man, Hey gonna start somewhere,
- 11:39Speaker 1: ye exactly, player manager. So we send Petro grafall off
- 11:44Speaker 1: from the Chicago White Sox with a career three nineteen,
- 11:46Speaker 1: win percentage eighty nine and one ninety. That is rough.
- 11:51Speaker 1: So I don't think he's ever going to get another
- 11:54Speaker 1: managerial job, but he's going to pop up somewhere, I'm
- 11:56Speaker 1: sure next year. So best luck out there, Pedro. We
- 12:00Speaker 1: are going to move into our normal news and notes,
- 12:04Speaker 1: but also kind of preview a little bit of like
- 12:06Speaker 1: on the back end, what we're going to do here
- 12:08Speaker 1: in the second half is just kind of run through
- 12:10Speaker 1: some buys and cells that we're making on both cards
- 12:13Speaker 1: and category side that we figured it'd be fun to
- 12:17Speaker 1: get back to our roots a little bit in terms
- 12:18Speaker 1: of blending both of those together and look at players
- 12:22Speaker 1: that not only are we trying to acquire in you know,
- 12:25Speaker 1: fantasy dynasty corporate like setups keeper setups where we're looking
- 12:31Speaker 1: towards next year and maybe even a couple of years
- 12:33Speaker 1: after that, but even honestly at this point kind of
- 12:36Speaker 1: setting our boards a little bit for twenty twenty five
- 12:39Speaker 1: as kind of like that analysis never stops and you
- 12:42Speaker 1: kind of have to keep everything fresh and think about
- 12:44Speaker 1: how you're going to be approaching next year as well,
- 12:47Speaker 1: because we'll be having our twenty twenty five kind of
- 12:49Speaker 1: like first round tradition that we started last year coming
- 12:54Speaker 1: up in a few weeks, and so we will get
- 12:57Speaker 1: into that in the second half, but first let's get
- 12:59Speaker 1: into some of those news notes. And we've got another
- 13:03Speaker 1: handful of transactions that are more fun than the injuries
- 13:06Speaker 1: again this week, so we'll start there. And the first
- 13:08Speaker 1: one is, I guess it's not so fun. Let's hear
- 13:12Speaker 1: Ryan Walker that is for the San Francisco Giants, but
- 13:15Speaker 1: Camillo Davall, closer for the Giants, was just straight demoted
- 13:19Speaker 1: to triple A. He was closing one day and then
- 13:22Speaker 1: down a triple A the next day. Brew I know
- 13:25Speaker 1: that we were talking a little bit before the pod
- 13:27Speaker 1: that this kind of shocked you and came out of nowhere,
- 13:29Speaker 1: But anything maybe in Dovall's profile that was pointing towards
- 13:34Speaker 1: this recently, or is this maybe a case of, hey,
- 13:37Speaker 1: they just are trying to get him right, or maybe
- 13:39Speaker 1: some sort of conflict with the coaching staff that they
- 13:43Speaker 1: didn't want to sort out publicly and just sent him down.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I think this falls into the wake up call category.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Is really where I'm to see it in Like when
- 13:55Speaker 2: I say, I was a little like you said, we're
- 13:57Speaker 2: talking before the POD, I was a little surprised this one.
- 14:00Speaker 2: It's more of the fact that you know, it's not
- 14:03Speaker 2: like he's in like year one and he just got
- 14:06Speaker 2: the role and you know, yeah, it's not working out
- 14:08Speaker 2: where I send jacking the minors for tooling, Like Devall's
- 14:11Speaker 2: been the closure for a while there in San Francisco,
- 14:14Speaker 2: and he's always had this really shaky profile, like walks
- 14:19Speaker 2: have always been a concern, always had a little bit
- 14:22Speaker 2: of trouble keeping it in the yard, like, but he
- 14:25Speaker 2: always just seemed to get the job done. And so
- 14:28Speaker 2: we're I'm a little surprised, is uh, you know it
- 14:32Speaker 2: we call it Paul Seawald, Right, he got just taken
- 14:34Speaker 2: out of his role the DBAX and they moved him
- 14:37Speaker 2: to low leverage, put them in games when they're up
- 14:40Speaker 2: you know, nine to two or down nine two whatever.
- 14:43Speaker 2: It is like you know, they're they're getting them some work,
- 14:46Speaker 2: build that conference back up, still giving the same challenge,
- 14:49Speaker 2: and then but saying like, yeah, we still believe you're
- 14:51Speaker 2: still a major league pitcher. And then at some point
- 14:53Speaker 2: I think, you know, I think it's the same for Deval.
- 14:55Speaker 2: I think this is for seawalld. He's gonna get another
- 14:58Speaker 2: shot at the role. Like I said, I'm just a
- 15:00Speaker 2: little surprised that they actually sent the ball all the
- 15:03Speaker 2: way down to the minors. And it's not like they're,
- 15:07Speaker 2: i say, really making a big play here for a
- 15:11Speaker 2: playoff spot. They're they're middling. There's still a chance right
- 15:18Speaker 2: for for the Giants, but you know, they're five hundred
- 15:20Speaker 2: team right now. It's not like it's not like they're
- 15:24Speaker 2: sitting here in the thick of it and like they
- 15:27Speaker 2: just can't pitch the guy at all. So, yeah, he's
- 15:30Speaker 2: been rough. It's the walks have just absolutely killed him,
- 15:34Speaker 2: uh this year, and that's really been the root of it.
- 15:38Speaker 2: He's had some luck issues, like it's just not been great.
- 15:43Speaker 2: So I think it really gets shocked up to we
- 15:46Speaker 2: need to to give you a wake up call. You
- 15:48Speaker 2: really need to refocus, and then we'll we'll bring it
- 15:51Speaker 2: back in you know, a few weeks and hopefully you're
- 15:54Speaker 2: you're feeling a little bit better, but we'll see. That's
- 15:59Speaker 2: that's that's a tough blow for fantasy owners that as
- 16:03Speaker 2: rough as he had them, he still was giving you
- 16:06Speaker 2: the saves you're expecting. So I think that that's a
- 16:09Speaker 2: tough one for fantasy owners.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Yeah, and the strikeouts too, the strikeout rate was still
- 16:14Speaker 1: pretty even, like you said, the walk rate jumping from
- 16:17Speaker 1: three and a half per nine last year up to
- 16:20Speaker 1: five point nine this year. That's brutal. And I do
- 16:25Speaker 1: tend to think that what I was kind of burying
- 16:28Speaker 1: there in the question at the end, with like a
- 16:30Speaker 1: conflict with the coaching staff is maybe a little bit
- 16:33Speaker 1: of probably what happened behind the scenes when you kind
- 16:36Speaker 1: of look at how this played out, that they were
- 16:38Speaker 1: probably asking Dvaul to try to make changes, and maybe
- 16:41Speaker 1: he wasn't receptive to them, especially when you are the closer,
- 16:44Speaker 1: like there is an ego that goes with that, and
- 16:47Speaker 1: it's a little tough to maybe approach somebody who is
- 16:50Speaker 1: doing well, you know, he was twenty two for twenty
- 16:55Speaker 1: seven and save opportunities and that's not I mean that
- 16:58Speaker 1: will get the job done. But maybe he just needed
- 17:01Speaker 1: the time down in TRIPAA to really hear the coaching
- 17:04Speaker 1: and learn the lesson. But I think in the meantime,
- 17:07Speaker 1: if Ryan Walker was available in your league, he honestly
- 17:10Speaker 1: wasn't in a lot of leagues because his rates were
- 17:12Speaker 1: so superb and he had been pitching to a two
- 17:17Speaker 1: seventeen ear array over sixty two and a third innings,
- 17:20Speaker 1: giving you more than ten case per nine, that he's
- 17:23Speaker 1: an easy set it and forget it closer. I think
- 17:26Speaker 1: as long as he's got the job.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Yep, fully agree. And I think you'll have it for
- 17:31Speaker 2: a little while here, because even even if the ball
- 17:33Speaker 2: gets called back up, they're gonna put them low leverage situations.
- 17:37Speaker 2: But I think there's a reasonable chance that Douvall is
- 17:43Speaker 2: closing games again before the end of the season. I'm
- 17:47Speaker 2: not saying it's a fifty to fifty, but like it's
- 17:49Speaker 2: maybe a thirty percent chance that they give another shot
- 17:52Speaker 2: before the end of the season if he can get
- 17:53Speaker 2: things right.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, I think you are nailed it down. The
- 17:57Speaker 1: head there, all right. The next transaction we have is
- 18:00Speaker 1: Junior Camenero, infielder for the Tampa Bay Rays, was called
- 18:04Speaker 1: up and this is his debut here for twenty twenty four.
- 18:07Speaker 1: He played a little bit down the stretch last year,
- 18:10Speaker 1: if you recall especially, was thrown just like right into
- 18:13Speaker 1: the thick of that playoff race and got some time.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Certainly would have been up much earlier this year if
- 18:18Speaker 1: he hadn't dealt with injuries. I think he dealt with
- 18:20Speaker 1: a hamstring mostly, and but just tons of nicks and
- 18:25Speaker 1: knacks and bruises as he was coming through the Ray
- 18:29Speaker 1: system this year. But after hitting two seventy six, three
- 18:33Speaker 1: thirty one, four ninety eight down at Triple A over
- 18:36Speaker 1: two hundred and thirty six played appearances, he's now gonna
- 18:40Speaker 1: be slotted in for It looks like third base right
- 18:42Speaker 1: now for the Rays, as they are slowly but surely
- 18:47Speaker 1: converting like Christopher Morell into a second baseman, which I
- 18:50Speaker 1: think makes a lot more sense. Like if the guy
- 18:52Speaker 1: can't throw, move him closer first before you.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Totally give up on him, don't tell that's a chuck
- 18:58Speaker 2: and oblock.
- 19:01Speaker 1: So we're moving further away. You got a closer then
- 19:05Speaker 1: further away back to left field. So but junior Camanaro
- 19:09Speaker 1: should play in the middle of the Rays lineup, pretty
- 19:12Speaker 1: much all the way down the stretch in the five hole.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Where is he cracking your top one hundred hitters for
- 19:18Speaker 1: the rest of the year here, Brew.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Yeah, he definitely is. You know I at this point,
- 19:23Speaker 2: I'd probably slat him in the back third right and
- 19:28Speaker 2: that probably sixty seventy range, just because the upside that
- 19:33Speaker 2: he doesn't bring to And to be frank like, as
- 19:37Speaker 2: I look at the rankings, we've hit that point of
- 19:39Speaker 2: the year where you can tell people are breaking down,
- 19:41Speaker 2: like the I've got asked the question a few times,
- 19:45Speaker 2: like why is this guy moving up the rankings? He's
- 19:47Speaker 2: not been very good. I'm like, he didn't move up
- 19:50Speaker 2: seven guys got hurt or fell apart or got shut
- 19:53Speaker 2: down or so like you can easily move down the
- 19:56Speaker 2: rankings and move up the rankings at the same time.
- 19:59Speaker 2: But yeah, I think Camanio kind of fits in, like
- 20:01Speaker 2: I said, if you force my hand, and probably staying
- 20:03Speaker 2: around the seventy range is where I'd be booking him
- 20:07Speaker 2: right now. Again, he's still a twenty one year old,
- 20:10Speaker 2: He's still trying to be figuring things out, so I
- 20:12Speaker 2: still think there's some growing pains there. He doesn't have
- 20:15Speaker 2: much speed, so he's not gonna be running and filling
- 20:18Speaker 2: the stat sheet, which would for me give him an
- 20:20Speaker 2: initial bump. But he he's got great power, he's gonna
- 20:26Speaker 2: have some good counting stats. He's gonna hit for a
- 20:29Speaker 2: prey respectable average. So I think there's a lot to
- 20:32Speaker 2: like with camin Yiro here. And I really like this
- 20:35Speaker 2: for his value next year, because getting a little bit
- 20:39Speaker 2: more second season, getting some more time under the belt
- 20:42Speaker 2: is only gonna be good for his overall development. So
- 20:44Speaker 2: I might be saying seventy right now, I would be
- 20:47Speaker 2: surprised to see him easily inside that top fifty next year,
- 20:50Speaker 2: if not even higher than that.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree. I think you're looking at somebody
- 20:55Speaker 1: who's gonna be a pretty significant power and average bat
- 20:59Speaker 1: and maybe a little bit speed thrown in, but certainly
- 21:02Speaker 1: like you're looking somewhere in the mid twenties for homers
- 21:04Speaker 1: in like a two seventy two eighty average and who knows,
- 21:08Speaker 1: like it's a pretty special bat.
- 21:09Speaker 2: I think, yeah, And it's it's one of those that
- 21:12Speaker 2: the ceiling is quite high on him. I think that's
- 21:15Speaker 2: where it gets to, like you say, yeah, twenty five,
- 21:18Speaker 2: two seventy five, but don't be shocked when the guy
- 21:20Speaker 2: hits thirty five two ninety and yeah, knocks in one
- 21:24Speaker 2: hundred runs or knocks in one hundred scores one hundred, Like,
- 21:27Speaker 2: don't be shocked if we're talking about a top two
- 21:30Speaker 2: round guy, top three round guy here in a few years,
- 21:33Speaker 2: because you know, we're learning the job here and he's
- 21:38Speaker 2: he's definitely got the skill set to do some pretty
- 21:40Speaker 2: impressive things.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I am totally on board there. Okay. Another call
- 21:45Speaker 1: up that we had this week was outfielder Jordan Walker
- 21:48Speaker 1: returning in Saint Louis, and he had been starting to
- 21:51Speaker 1: really put it together as of late. Down in Triple A.
- 21:55Speaker 1: He was slashing since the All Star break. Well, he
- 21:59Speaker 1: was hitting three hundred, over one hundred at bats or
- 22:03Speaker 1: over eighty at bats, Don't know where I got the
- 22:04Speaker 1: hundred from with five homers, and was really like starting
- 22:09Speaker 1: to just control the zone a little bit better in
- 22:12Speaker 1: terms of twenty strikeouts in those eighty at bats, eighty
- 22:16Speaker 1: eight plate appearances, so just around a you know, low
- 22:20Speaker 1: twenties percent k right there and was starting to just
- 22:23Speaker 1: drive the ball more too. You had more doubles in
- 22:26Speaker 1: that profile, and was certainly looking like he was finding
- 22:29Speaker 1: a stride in his swing. Doesn't look like he's got
- 22:32Speaker 1: a very significant role right now in Saint Louis as
- 22:36Speaker 1: they're playing him as a short sight patoon for some reason.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Like I don't know why you wouldn't want to march
- 22:42Speaker 1: him out there and get every day at bats, because
- 22:45Speaker 1: I think it's becoming pretty evident that Burlson and Jordan
- 22:50Speaker 1: Walker split some sort of like first base and corner
- 22:53Speaker 1: outfield spot next year is I just don't see how
- 22:56Speaker 1: the Cardinals bring back gold Schmid at this point. But
- 22:59Speaker 1: what would you be looking for in Jordan Walker's profile
- 23:03Speaker 1: down the stretch to encourage you for next year? I mean,
- 23:05Speaker 1: this is a guy who coming into this year was
- 23:09Speaker 1: drafted around like one hundred and tenth pick. I heard
- 23:13Speaker 1: on the Rota Wire pod earlier this week that before
- 23:16Speaker 1: Duvall was demoted, Walker was the highest pick in any
- 23:20Speaker 1: of the NFBC drafts, you know, on that data that
- 23:23Speaker 1: was demoted to the miners before that. So what does
- 23:26Speaker 1: walkening to do down the stretch to really impress you
- 23:29Speaker 1: and push him back up draft boards for next year.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Yeah. I think for me, it's really seeing the quality
- 23:39Speaker 2: of contact improve. He got to a point where it
- 23:43Speaker 2: was he was pounding into the ground or popping up
- 23:46Speaker 2: like he just seemed lost to the plate, having trouble
- 23:49Speaker 2: kind of stretching to some of those outside pitches. And
- 23:53Speaker 2: I need to see him hitting the line drives. I
- 23:55Speaker 2: need to see him any solid line drives, solid contact,
- 23:58Speaker 2: because if you do that, it starts a translate into
- 24:00Speaker 2: all those other things. And if he isn't starting to
- 24:05Speaker 2: do some of those things, which then starts to increase
- 24:07Speaker 2: the playing time, I'm I'm stepping away from Jordan Walker
- 24:11Speaker 2: in twenty twenty five. There's there's definitely capability in that body.
- 24:16Speaker 2: But with the way the Cardinals have really handled young
- 24:20Speaker 2: up and coming the hitters in the recent years, it's
- 24:23Speaker 2: not been good, not been pleasant. And so if he's not,
- 24:27Speaker 2: like I said, showing like that that very fundamental skill
- 24:30Speaker 2: set of spray the field, hit line drives, get on
- 24:34Speaker 2: base by not striking out like take some walks and
- 24:38Speaker 2: then slowly growing that playing time, I'm concerned. And I
- 24:42Speaker 2: guess that might be saying like the obvious, like he's
- 24:45Speaker 2: got to perform. But it's not like you just get
- 24:47Speaker 2: a little baby pluck or you know, hit a few
- 24:49Speaker 2: home runs, Like I'm actually not concerned with the home runs.
- 24:51Speaker 2: I'm concerned like, are you hitting the ball solid on
- 24:55Speaker 2: the line, spray in all fields? Like that's Jordan Walker
- 24:59Speaker 2: is not going to a thirty five homer guy. He is.
- 25:02Speaker 2: He is going to be a guy that hits maybe
- 25:04Speaker 2: for a higher average and you know, steal a handful
- 25:08Speaker 2: of bases, can hit twenty twenty five homers. That's what
- 25:12Speaker 2: you're you're hoping for with with Jordan Walker. So I
- 25:15Speaker 2: don't know, how about you? What are you? What are
- 25:16Speaker 2: you watching for with Walker at this point?
- 25:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I think a lot of the same what you're
- 25:21Speaker 1: looking for, and a little bit of like process too,
- 25:24Speaker 1: Like I want to see just confidence in the box
- 25:27Speaker 1: more than anything else. Like it's really it's something that's
- 25:30Speaker 1: not going to show up obviously in stat lines, but
- 25:32Speaker 1: if you are watching Cardinals games or get a chance
- 25:35Speaker 1: to catch like his at bats and highlights, I just
- 25:38Speaker 1: want to see Jordan Walker look like he is ready
- 25:42Speaker 1: to hit in the box and they's not on his
- 25:45Speaker 1: back heels that he looks overmatched. If he can start
- 25:48Speaker 1: flashing a little bit of that, I think some of
- 25:50Speaker 1: those other things that you talked about come through, because
- 25:53Speaker 1: I think at this point it's less of like a
- 25:56Speaker 1: skill issue and more of kind of like a mental
- 26:00Speaker 1: adjustment or mental focus or just approach that. Like. I
- 26:04Speaker 1: think it's one of the things that the Cardinals have
- 26:06Speaker 1: really struggled with as a team overall, is like just
- 26:09Speaker 1: trying to get that level of coaching. I think they
- 26:12Speaker 1: can do the x's and o's really well, but trying
- 26:15Speaker 1: to get some of their players to that next level
- 26:19Speaker 1: hasn't always translated well because I think there's just some
- 26:22Speaker 1: sort of gap in their system in terms of trying
- 26:25Speaker 1: to explain those things and have people develop from that
- 26:28Speaker 1: just kind of more psychological perspective.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Yeah, you're absolutely right, So it'll be interesting to see.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I hope he gets a chance to hit on both
- 26:36Speaker 2: against both sides of the platoon there.
- 26:39Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean, a couple more week bad weeks
- 26:42Speaker 1: and he's gonna get a full vote of playing time,
- 26:44Speaker 1: so I don't think we'll have to worry. Okay, the
- 26:47Speaker 1: next move that we have is Zebbie Matthews of the
- 26:50Speaker 1: Minnesota Twins was called up and made his debut. As
- 26:53Speaker 1: he's likely going to stick in the rotation for a
- 26:56Speaker 1: long time. With Joe Ryan going down with a triceps injury,
- 27:00Speaker 1: we can get into the Joe Ryan piece in a
- 27:02Speaker 1: little bit and we'll have a little bit I think
- 27:04Speaker 1: more on Zebby Matthews in terms of where we're taking
- 27:06Speaker 1: him in dynasties, but especially he's gonna be a hot
- 27:10Speaker 1: commodity here this weekend for any sort of waiver wire
- 27:14Speaker 1: bids and fab pickups. He blazed through three levels of
- 27:18Speaker 1: the Miners this year with a two sixty ERA across
- 27:22Speaker 1: ninety seven innings with a ten point six K nine,
- 27:26Speaker 1: So he's certainly got a big arm. I mean, are
- 27:30Speaker 1: you adding him in every league you can this weekend?
- 27:33Speaker 2: Already?
- 27:34Speaker 1: Did?
- 27:34Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, yeah, No, I'm absolutely adding Zebbe Matthews wherever
- 27:38Speaker 2: I can. But I don't think I want to be
- 27:41Speaker 2: clear the reason, and it's not because of Zbbe Matthews upside.
- 27:45Speaker 2: It's because of Zbi Matthews downside. And you know, if
- 27:49Speaker 2: you look at this profile, Zebby does not have like
- 27:52Speaker 2: a specific overwhelming pitch. He's kind of a four or
- 27:56Speaker 2: five pitch mixed guy. He's a massive human. He's six
- 28:01Speaker 2: five to ten and he actually kind of I don't know,
- 28:04Speaker 2: if you watched his debut, he got actually short arms
- 28:07Speaker 2: the ball a little bit doesn't look like he gets
- 28:08Speaker 2: the full value out of his height there for. But
- 28:16Speaker 2: he's the probably massive control artist, the best control in
- 28:20Speaker 2: the Miners this year, you could argue best control in
- 28:24Speaker 2: all of baseball pretty easily. He across the three levels
- 28:29Speaker 2: of the Miners. And I'm sure you already know this.
- 28:32Speaker 2: He had seven walks this entire season, So yeah, that's
- 28:38Speaker 2: pretty good when you're also actually delivering the strikeouts and
- 28:42Speaker 2: you're striking out ten eleven guyser per nine. And why
- 28:47Speaker 2: that matters is when your pitches are good, like they're
- 28:50Speaker 2: all good pitches, but you can place them wherever you want.
- 28:54Speaker 2: And this happened yesterday. If you watch the game, he
- 28:56Speaker 2: was getting the kind of Greg Maddis calls. He was
- 28:59Speaker 2: around on the zone, he was getting inside the zone,
- 29:02Speaker 2: but then he was just nibbling on the outside. But
- 29:05Speaker 2: because the control was so good, he was getting those
- 29:08Speaker 2: a little bit fringe calls as well, just because he's
- 29:12Speaker 2: always in the zone and so it's so easy just
- 29:14Speaker 2: to give him those calls. But from a fantasy perspective,
- 29:18Speaker 2: he's in a great ballpark for not giving up homers
- 29:21Speaker 2: despite what he did yesterday. He is going to keep
- 29:24Speaker 2: your whip low because he's not gonna give those walks.
- 29:27Speaker 2: He's on a decent team. He's just not gonna be
- 29:30Speaker 2: one of those guys that blows up all over the place.
- 29:33Speaker 2: He's you know, sure, he's still he's young, he's still
- 29:36Speaker 2: trying to figure out what he's he's doing. But he
- 29:39Speaker 2: just to me, really comes off as a solid, solid player,
- 29:44Speaker 2: And I'm not looking at him as a guy that's
- 29:46Speaker 2: gonna be a one or two. He's a three or
- 29:48Speaker 2: four that you're really really happy with. Oddly, the guy
- 29:52Speaker 2: he kind of reminds me of is in the same
- 29:54Speaker 2: rotation with Bailey over the other really big guy controls
- 29:59Speaker 2: the ball. I would say over Stuff is a little
- 30:02Speaker 2: more impressive than Zebbi's, but Zebbi clearly has better control
- 30:06Speaker 2: than most anybody. But they they have that really good
- 30:13Speaker 2: pitch mix and sitting a really good ballpark, really good rotation,
- 30:18Speaker 2: and the Twins are like starting to pump out some
- 30:21Speaker 2: some pitching. Like there's been enough time with with the
- 30:24Speaker 2: Guardians here or something. There's there's a little pitching factory
- 30:26Speaker 2: going here in Minnesota.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I've always kind of thought that Derek
- 30:32Speaker 1: Falvey up there like had a chance to do some
- 30:35Speaker 1: of that, and yeah, it's it's great to see some
- 30:37Speaker 1: of that coming to Fruition after they brought through some
- 30:41Speaker 1: of the hitters in that system. And so yeah, I
- 30:43Speaker 1: think the Twins are gonna be righting this battle down
- 30:46Speaker 1: the stretch. I think we'll be seeing lots of Zebbi.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Can't miss him when he's that big on the screens.
- 30:53Speaker 1: All right. Next call up we have is Will Wagner,
- 30:56Speaker 1: son of I almost said Hall of Famer Billy Wagoner.
- 30:59Speaker 1: He's it'd be a Hall of Famer. I it's kind
- 31:02Speaker 1: of a shame that Billy Wagner is not in a
- 31:03Speaker 1: Hall of Fame. But that's a rant for another podcast
- 31:06Speaker 1: another day. But Will Wagner debuting with the Toronto Blue
- 31:10Speaker 1: Jays after he came over from Houston in the USA
- 31:13Speaker 1: Kakuchi trade at the deadline, and it's well deserved. He
- 31:17Speaker 1: is a little bit older, so he's twenty five and
- 31:20Speaker 1: was slashing three fifteen, four thirty two, four forty four
- 31:24Speaker 1: across seventy seven games at Triple A. A little bit
- 31:27Speaker 1: light in terms of like the power department, only six homers,
- 31:30Speaker 1: but certainly great back control, great ie. He's playing second
- 31:35Speaker 1: base for the most part in Toronto, although he can
- 31:38Speaker 1: also play third base, and I mean he played shortstop
- 31:42Speaker 1: coming up, but I don't know if he's gonna stick
- 31:44Speaker 1: there at all. So you're looking at a second base,
- 31:46Speaker 1: third base situation, which is all the Blue Jays have now.
- 31:50Speaker 1: I think like it's a he's he is on a
- 31:53Speaker 1: platoon with David Schneider, but reminds me a lot of
- 31:56Speaker 1: like this as in Barger, Spencer Horowitz, Ernie Clement, guy
- 32:02Speaker 1: type that Toronto has been collecting, and what are you
- 32:06Speaker 1: doing here with Bill that Wagner. Do you think that
- 32:07Speaker 1: there is a path that he could be able to
- 32:10Speaker 1: carve out some playing time going into the future for
- 32:13Speaker 1: the Blue Jays.
- 32:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I think there is a path that he can
- 32:16Speaker 2: carve out some playing time. But I also think you're
- 32:19Speaker 2: right in your assessment of the kind of player that
- 32:21Speaker 2: he is. I don't think he's overly exciting. He's kind
- 32:25Speaker 2: of the guy that is going to be slightly above
- 32:30Speaker 2: average maybe, but he's one of those that you're not
- 32:34Speaker 2: worried about. He's not a boom or bust. He's you know,
- 32:38Speaker 2: doesn't strike out too much, walks a decent amount, so
- 32:41Speaker 2: he's on base. He can run a little bit, he
- 32:44Speaker 2: can pop a little bit, but neither of those are
- 32:46Speaker 2: carrying tools. Like he just is a good ballplayer, but
- 32:52Speaker 2: not the ballplayer that you're trying to invest in and
- 32:55Speaker 2: build your team around. He's more of a role player
- 32:58Speaker 2: fits in and your point. He can play few different
- 33:00Speaker 2: positions and so he's a useful piece of a team
- 33:04Speaker 2: that's not that good, or he's on a team that's
- 33:06Speaker 2: pretty good and he's a super utility. That's kind of
- 33:08Speaker 2: where I see him. So from like a fantasy perspective,
- 33:11Speaker 2: I'm really just kind of, you know, watching enjoying the
- 33:14Speaker 2: story that is Will Will Wagner. But I'm not jumping
- 33:18Speaker 2: in with both feata at this point in time. I
- 33:21Speaker 2: don't know, am I a little too cold on a
- 33:22Speaker 2: Will Wagner or you there with me?
- 33:25Speaker 1: No? I think I think that's probably just about right
- 33:28Speaker 1: that I think he's more of like a fifteen teamer,
- 33:32Speaker 1: And especially like in an ale only like these type
- 33:35Speaker 1: of guys are really valuable because like if he is
- 33:38Speaker 1: playing every day and is hitting for a decent batting
- 33:42Speaker 1: average and just kind of he walks a lot, so
- 33:45Speaker 1: like I think you're looking at somebody who can walk
- 33:46Speaker 1: eight to ten percent at the time in the big
- 33:49Speaker 1: leagues that he's got a good eye. Honestly, it reminds
- 33:52Speaker 1: me of Spencer Horwitz, but with a little bit more
- 33:56Speaker 1: speed and a little bit less power, and so it
- 33:59Speaker 1: just plays consistency standpoint of where like even like some
- 34:03Speaker 1: of like the late career, like Justin Turner, maybe not
- 34:07Speaker 1: as much batting average, but sometimes you just need somebody
- 34:10Speaker 1: who will play, not take your banging average and just
- 34:13Speaker 1: give you runs an RBI in really deep leagues. Will
- 34:16Speaker 1: Wagner would be a perfect fit for that type of situation.
- 34:19Speaker 2: Yeah, he's your He is your prototypical multi positional guy.
- 34:25Speaker 2: Late in the GIRAFT you're like, yeah, I'll take him
- 34:27Speaker 2: because I might use him, and then you'll cut him
- 34:31Speaker 2: like two weeks later because you're like you're you're chasing
- 34:33Speaker 2: the hot bat, so uh yeah, it'll, it'll. It's it's
- 34:36Speaker 2: a good story. Unfortunately, Kea Bigio is not there to
- 34:40Speaker 2: to to bring it all together. But again, discussion for
- 34:44Speaker 2: another day.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean Bizio is a free agent. He could
- 34:47Speaker 1: come back.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Maybe very true, maybe he come back.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Okay, next treansaction we have is a little bit of
- 34:56Speaker 1: a different one. So the Seattle Manners went out and
- 35:00Speaker 1: extended outfielder Victor Roblace to a two year deal. They
- 35:04Speaker 1: picked up road Blaze from the waiver wire after he
- 35:07Speaker 1: was outrighted by the Nationals. Started with Seattle on June fifth,
- 35:12Speaker 1: and since then, over one hundred and twenty seven played
- 35:14Speaker 1: appearances has slashed two ninety two, three sixty four thirty three,
- 35:19Speaker 1: good for a one to thirty three WRC plus with
- 35:22Speaker 1: three homers, twelve stolen bases, no caught stealings. So he
- 35:25Speaker 1: has been on fire if you've been able to pick
- 35:28Speaker 1: him up in any leagues out there, especially as a
- 35:30Speaker 1: stolen base asset. He's been playing a great center field
- 35:34Speaker 1: while Julio Rodriguez was injured there for a little bit,
- 35:37Speaker 1: and has really found a new groove in Seattle. I
- 35:42Speaker 1: think it has been starting to fall apart a little bit.
- 35:44Speaker 1: Let me look at his post All Star break splits
- 35:48Speaker 1: and that's still okay. You're looking at two sixty eight,
- 35:51Speaker 1: three twenty six, three seventy eight one oh, seven WRC
- 35:55Speaker 1: plus since the All Star break, and that's when all
- 35:58Speaker 1: the steals have come as well. So he's turned into
- 36:02Speaker 1: I wouldn't say, maybe like what we expected of him,
- 36:04Speaker 1: because the prospect expectations of Victor Roeblace a few years
- 36:08Speaker 1: ago were sky high as he came through with both
- 36:13Speaker 1: power and speed in the Washington system. But I don't
- 36:17Speaker 1: think the power is ever coming. But do you think
- 36:20Speaker 1: that he can stick in Seattle and actually be useful
- 36:23Speaker 1: for like a stolen base, a little bit of power,
- 36:27Speaker 1: but mostly stolen base and some average in our fantasy leagues?
- 36:31Speaker 1: Like are you acquiring him out there in dynasty leagues? Possibly?
- 36:35Speaker 2: No? Yeah, I I I yeah, you Like I was
- 36:41Speaker 2: trying to figure out a way to like give some
- 36:42Speaker 2: glimmer of hope here. But no, Like when when this
- 36:46Speaker 2: when I saw the news first break, I was like,
- 36:48Speaker 2: what what we talked about here? But it actually makes
- 36:51Speaker 2: a lot of sense from the from the Mariner's perspective,
- 36:54Speaker 2: what they're what they're doing, yeah, which is you are
- 36:57Speaker 2: just signing a fourth outfielder that but gels with your team,
- 37:02Speaker 2: that has some random upside. I mean he's very talented.
- 37:06Speaker 2: I don't think there's a question about that. It's just
- 37:07Speaker 2: it's in spurts and stops and things. But he's a
- 37:11Speaker 2: really great defender. He can run, and at the same time,
- 37:15Speaker 2: you sign him for like four million a year basically,
- 37:18Speaker 2: and so if at the end of the day you
- 37:20Speaker 2: find a better spot, you're not out that bad. From
- 37:23Speaker 2: a fourth outfielder perspective, like they've just kind of locked.
- 37:26Speaker 2: It's like you're in a dynasty league and you're holding
- 37:29Speaker 2: and you've plugged in your a guy on your bench
- 37:33Speaker 2: and you're like, eh, yeah, I would like to have
- 37:36Speaker 2: him for a buck at auction, but I'll pay three
- 37:39Speaker 2: because I don't have to worry about it. That's exactly
- 37:41Speaker 2: what the Mariners just did with with Victor Robliss here,
- 37:44Speaker 2: and don't read more into it. He's on a little
- 37:46Speaker 2: bit of hot streak right now, but there's nothing that
- 37:51Speaker 2: he hasn't done before with a little hot streak. Proved
- 37:55Speaker 2: me wrong with Victor Robliss, but I am not buying
- 37:59Speaker 2: at all.
- 38:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree that in certainly, like, yeah, a
- 38:04Speaker 1: late round dart throw a little bit honestly, like a
- 38:07Speaker 1: Rajah Davis when he's playing. Sure, maximize it while you can,
- 38:11Speaker 1: but don't spend any sort of like dynasty capital, keeper
- 38:15Speaker 1: capital on him, don't spend big bucks at the draft table.
- 38:19Speaker 1: That it's just it will come in spurts. And I
- 38:23Speaker 1: think that the hype is is long gone. You can
- 38:26Speaker 1: just he's never hit the ball hard, and I think
- 38:28Speaker 1: that was always his problem. That like he's one of
- 38:31Speaker 1: the first players I think of when we started getting
- 38:33Speaker 1: these bad ball metrics and like trying to figure out
- 38:36Speaker 1: why some people have not totally made it in the majors.
- 38:41Speaker 1: It's pretty easy to see what's been holding back Victor Roeblace.
- 38:43Speaker 1: He just doesn't get enough oop into the ball, and
- 38:47Speaker 1: it's gonna just not be something he can overcome. I
- 38:50Speaker 1: think this is a little bit of like a he
- 38:52Speaker 1: needed a change of scenery for sure, and this is
- 38:55Speaker 1: proving it, but certainly not investing hugely going forward, but
- 39:00Speaker 1: will pick him up if if I need a little
- 39:02Speaker 1: bit speed and he's playing, you know.
- 39:03Speaker 2: Yeah, you're absolutely right. This is the perfect guy when
- 39:06Speaker 2: you're in like a categories league or something like that
- 39:09Speaker 2: and you're struggling and they're like, well, I'm not gonna
- 39:12Speaker 2: if I don't get my seals, season's over. After Rubless
- 39:15Speaker 2: is your man.
- 39:16Speaker 1: Yes, Okay, Now let's move on to some injuries. So
- 39:20Speaker 1: the first guy we've got is once you started finally
- 39:23Speaker 1: buying in, you cursed him, and now he's gonna be
- 39:26Speaker 1: out because I can almost guarantee you that the news
- 39:30Speaker 1: tomorrow is that he's gonna need Tommy John On this
- 39:33Speaker 1: UCL injury, we're talking about the Yankees Jazz Chisholm, who
- 39:37Speaker 1: sprained his left UCL, so it's not his throwing arm
- 39:40Speaker 1: when he was sliding into plate the other night against
- 39:42Speaker 1: the White Sox. They have subsequently shelved him on the IEL,
- 39:46Speaker 1: but it is a question of what the treatment path
- 39:50Speaker 1: is gonna be here for Chisholm that I'm not totally sure,
- 39:53Speaker 1: like how the UCL affects kind of like your back
- 39:57Speaker 1: arm because he's left handed, Yeah, your back arm when
- 39:59Speaker 1: you're swinging. Like when we think about like Otani going
- 40:02Speaker 1: through this and Bryce Harper going through this, it was
- 40:06Speaker 1: the right elbow, so they were able to actually play
- 40:10Speaker 1: with the torny UCL. I don't know if like that's
- 40:12Speaker 1: a different calculus because you've got a little bit more
- 40:15Speaker 1: of your power coming from your left arm when you're
- 40:18Speaker 1: swinging left handed. I'm trying to like if you could
- 40:21Speaker 1: see me on the zoom, I'm like trying to think
- 40:23Speaker 1: about how the swing would like affect my elbow. But
- 40:26Speaker 1: Jazz Chism, you moved him up your board in the
- 40:28Speaker 1: top one hundred hitters because he's been absolutely on fire
- 40:31Speaker 1: for the Yankees, certainly in leagues where people had him.
- 40:36Speaker 1: I have him in TGFBI and he just kind of
- 40:38Speaker 1: like stormed my team into the top twenty overall because
- 40:41Speaker 1: he's hit three sixteen, three sixty one, seven oh two
- 40:45Speaker 1: over sixty one, played appearances with the Yankees with seven
- 40:49Speaker 1: homers five steals while just learning third base on the fly.
- 40:53Speaker 1: So he will have third base eligibility and outfield eligibility
- 40:56Speaker 1: for next year, which will be huge. But what are
- 40:59Speaker 1: you doing in where you have Jazz Because this is
- 41:03Speaker 1: a really tough injury and we just are in a
- 41:06Speaker 1: very gray period right now. So are you thinking that
- 41:09Speaker 1: he can come back and find any sort of form
- 41:12Speaker 1: of the Yankees that he flashed before? Yeah?
- 41:16Speaker 2: Well, I mean to be honest, So I'm gonna switch
- 41:17Speaker 2: sports for you here. I'm feeling like Dennis Green, Arizona
- 41:20Speaker 2: Cardinal's head coach, he is who he thought he was,
- 41:25Speaker 2: or they are who we thought they were right.
- 41:27Speaker 1: You're gonna do it fighting.
- 41:30Speaker 2: But yeah, it comes down to like it is the history,
- 41:36Speaker 2: it is the style you right like and I don't
- 41:39Speaker 2: think there's any denying the skill set here, but this's
- 41:41Speaker 2: just it's another nail in that coffin like happens once
- 41:44Speaker 2: you know, happens twice. It's like this is like the
- 41:48Speaker 2: like fourth kind of like significant injury. I think I
- 41:52Speaker 2: can recall with Chisholm, and it's not like one thing,
- 41:54Speaker 2: it's it's it's different when it's like you've a backy
- 41:56Speaker 2: back like a Christian yellis for example, Like it's that
- 41:59Speaker 2: thing that you know what it is, you kind of
- 42:01Speaker 2: know your what you're getting into jazz, Like I'm worried
- 42:04Speaker 2: his arm is gonna fall off tomorrow or he's gonna
- 42:06Speaker 2: literally run through a fence, Like I just don't know
- 42:08Speaker 2: what's gonna happen. I'll have Rice Harper type style. And
- 42:12Speaker 2: so I think that that is concerning to the same point.
- 42:15Speaker 2: I'm also like over here on the zoom trying to
- 42:17Speaker 2: figure out like how that I almost feel like your
- 42:19Speaker 2: front arm in the swing would be a bigger issue
- 42:22Speaker 2: for the UCL I.
- 42:24Speaker 1: I don't know but you see something like the inside
- 42:27Speaker 1: of your elbow for torquing it is.
- 42:30Speaker 2: But still, I just I'm just I don't know. I'm
- 42:33Speaker 2: gonna have to go do some left lefty hitting in
- 42:35Speaker 2: the garage after this podcast. There's no video evidence of that,
- 42:39Speaker 2: by the way, righty through through. Yeah, I think this
- 42:43Speaker 2: is one of those ones where you're we're gonna he's
- 42:45Speaker 2: gonna take a little bit more time. I think he
- 42:47Speaker 2: probably gets a chance to come back. But again with
- 42:51Speaker 2: kind of where we're at the standings with the Yankees,
- 42:53Speaker 2: they're not gonna risk anything. They want him for the playoffs,
- 42:57Speaker 2: so they're gonna be very cautious with this one on
- 43:00Speaker 2: he's if he's going to be able to come back.
- 43:03Speaker 2: To your point, I feel like we might be announcing
- 43:05Speaker 2: surgery tomorrow would have been on how severe it is.
- 43:08Speaker 2: But if he's able to come back, it's for like
- 43:10Speaker 2: one week at the end of the season into the playoffs.
- 43:12Speaker 2: Like I so, I if your trade deadline still out
- 43:15Speaker 2: there and somebody else is willing to take that gamble,
- 43:18Speaker 2: I would absolutely capitalize on it.
- 43:20Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think that's totally fair. But yeah, you
- 43:23Speaker 1: did mention some back injuries and we've got another one
- 43:27Speaker 1: with our next injury, and that is I mean, this
- 43:30Speaker 1: has become a chronic thing now with Chris Bryant. I mean,
- 43:32Speaker 1: we haven't talked about him in a while because honestly,
- 43:34Speaker 1: he had just kind of sunk so low he didn't
- 43:36Speaker 1: kind of warrant discussion. But I did want to bring
- 43:39Speaker 1: him up because maybe as like a bit of a
- 43:43Speaker 1: sion r because I just like, I do think that
- 43:45Speaker 1: this is probably about like the end of any sort
- 43:48Speaker 1: of Chris Bryant hope out there in the fantasy pool,
- 43:51Speaker 1: because I think the season's probably going to be over
- 43:54Speaker 1: for him. Only played thirty seven games, hit two eighteen three,
- 43:58Speaker 1: twenty three three ZHO one, struck out thirty one percent
- 44:01Speaker 1: of the time and looked like he was striking out
- 44:03Speaker 1: thirty one percent of the time, if not more. He's
- 44:06Speaker 1: going to turn thirty three in January, so he's gonna
- 44:11Speaker 1: really be into advanced territory that the Rockies were probably hoping,
- 44:16Speaker 1: you know, the first three years of the deal would
- 44:18Speaker 1: go okay, and then you know, once he hit the
- 44:21Speaker 1: back end, including you know, getting into that age thirty
- 44:24Speaker 1: three season, it would start getting worse. But yeah, he
- 44:28Speaker 1: hasn't even played one hundred and sixty two games for
- 44:30Speaker 1: the Rockies, yet he's only had one hundred and fifty
- 44:32Speaker 1: nine over three years. Just really sad considering what Pete
- 44:35Speaker 1: Chris Bryant was and what he offered from a speed
- 44:38Speaker 1: and power department. But yeah, I just wanted to lament
- 44:42Speaker 1: that we're probably not going to see Chris Bryant back
- 44:45Speaker 1: any real fashion, which is also a shame considering the
- 44:49Speaker 1: whole Rockies of it all. You know that the other
- 44:52Speaker 1: week when the Rockies had a homestand I made a
- 44:55Speaker 1: joke in my column that you know, I had all
- 44:57Speaker 1: these Rockies to suggest picking up and I was like,
- 45:00Speaker 1: you don't need to pick up Chris Bryant, though this
- 45:02Speaker 1: is part of the reason why. It just it's really
- 45:05Speaker 1: sad that his body failed him, as he does look
- 45:08Speaker 1: just totally toasted at this point.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's it's sad, like to your point, incredible
- 45:14Speaker 2: talent and injuries just got the best of a man.
- 45:18Speaker 2: He's got four more or sorry, five more years on
- 45:22Speaker 2: that deal. Uh, four more years. He's got four more
- 45:25Speaker 2: deals years on that deal. And it's it's, uh, I'm
- 45:31Speaker 2: at this point, like you're you're reaching Chris Davis territory,
- 45:35Speaker 2: and like you're asking the question of, like, are you
- 45:38Speaker 2: better off eating this contract and moving on from the headache?
- 45:43Speaker 2: And I, first of all, I don't think the Rockies,
- 45:46Speaker 2: like I don't think they can say face doing that.
- 45:48Speaker 2: They have to hope that, Like you just have to
- 45:52Speaker 2: give him as much absolute time as possible to try
- 45:55Speaker 2: to get healthy. And you're hoping he can d h
- 45:57Speaker 2: for half the season, Like you're just hoping that you
- 46:01Speaker 2: get one hundred, one hundred WRC plus Chris Bryant's perfectly
- 46:07Speaker 2: league average is all you can possibly hope for at
- 46:10Speaker 2: this point.
- 46:11Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, so we'll see. I mean, I hope he
- 46:13Speaker 1: does bounce back, but it's been just a rough go
- 46:16Speaker 1: in terms of the variety of injuries that he's undergone.
- 46:19Speaker 1: And yeah, I'm sure. Also you want to talk about
- 46:23Speaker 1: other teams that probably don't have great training staffs in preparation,
- 46:27Speaker 1: Colorado Rockies are in that boat with the Angels and
- 46:30Speaker 1: the White Sox. So that's not going to help him all. Right.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Next injury we have is we've actually got a pair
- 46:36Speaker 1: of Ryan's that after the Bryant injury. So Ryan's and
- 46:40Speaker 1: Brian's and Bryant's look out out there. This week we
- 46:44Speaker 1: have River Ryan going down for the Dodgers after throwing
- 46:47Speaker 1: twenty one and the third innings at the big league level.
- 46:49Speaker 1: Was brilliant with a one thirty three era looked like
- 46:53Speaker 1: he could be the savior for a lot of teams
- 46:55Speaker 1: that were looking for some starting pitching down the stretch.
- 46:57Speaker 1: But he has a UCL injury and already underwent Tommy
- 47:01Speaker 1: John surgery. So what are you doing here with River
- 47:04Speaker 1: Ryan in any like super deep dynasty leagues. He's probably
- 47:09Speaker 1: not going to be back for twenty twenty six, and
- 47:12Speaker 1: at that point he'll be twenty seven years old. Any
- 47:15Speaker 1: glimmer of hope there.
- 47:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think this is one of those
- 47:19Speaker 2: scenarios where you like the talent, you like the potential,
- 47:22Speaker 2: you like the team, but the situation is just not
- 47:25Speaker 2: worth it. Like you're you're absolutely looking three years out
- 47:30Speaker 2: to your point. Guy is twenty seven that you're hoping
- 47:33Speaker 2: is working things back, and he hasn't established himself that
- 47:37Speaker 2: he can contribute at that major league level. There's a
- 47:39Speaker 2: lot to like when you look at kind of like
- 47:41Speaker 2: his history is minor league results, Like there's a lot
- 47:44Speaker 2: of things like yeah, this could turn into something it
- 47:47Speaker 2: hasn't turned. It's that we have. Yes, I know, he
- 47:50Speaker 2: had a one thirty three year ray. He also had
- 47:53Speaker 2: a four point three x step so like it wasn't
- 47:57Speaker 2: like he was absolutely dominant by he means, and you're
- 48:00Speaker 2: just like, man, this is unfortunate. I just hope he
- 48:03Speaker 2: gets back and he can regregate gain his form. Like
- 48:05Speaker 2: you still don't know what he is, So I don't
- 48:08Speaker 2: think it's worth waiting three years from that clogging up
- 48:10Speaker 2: a roster spot. This If he comes back in three
- 48:13Speaker 2: years and is unbelievable, he goes, well, that's okay. I'm
- 48:17Speaker 2: not too upset about it. So it's unfortunate the Dodgers
- 48:22Speaker 2: for all the pitching they've had. Man, they've really struggled
- 48:24Speaker 2: to get to keep guys healthy and get the innings
- 48:27Speaker 2: that they're that they're looking for u f from their rotation.
- 48:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree. All right, that other injured Ryan
- 48:35Speaker 1: and we already talked about him a little bit with
- 48:37Speaker 1: the Zebbie Matthews news. That is Joe Ryan, pitcher for
- 48:40Speaker 1: the Minnesota Twins, going down with a terrace major grade
- 48:44Speaker 1: two strain and so that should keep him out like
- 48:47Speaker 1: four to six weeks and that's pretty much the rest
- 48:50Speaker 1: of the season, and especially when you're dealing with a
- 48:53Speaker 1: strain in the shoulder slash tricep area, that that's not
- 48:58Speaker 1: an injury that they usually mess around with at the
- 49:01Speaker 1: big league level, that they make sure that that thing
- 49:03Speaker 1: is fully healed and ready to go. But the Twins
- 49:05Speaker 1: will really want Joe Ryan down the stretch because he's
- 49:09Speaker 1: really had broken out this year in terms of he
- 49:11Speaker 1: put up a three sixty array that was under written
- 49:16Speaker 1: by a three forty five fit and that came the
- 49:19Speaker 1: strikeout stick a little bit of a step back, but
- 49:21Speaker 1: certainly like lopping off almost a run from the ra
- 49:24Speaker 1: you would take that if you were a Joe Ryan owner.
- 49:27Speaker 1: He did that over a whole one hundred and thirty
- 49:29Speaker 1: five innings with a point nine to nine whip, and
- 49:33Speaker 1: I think with that like he was incredible this year.
- 49:37Speaker 1: I really love Joe Ryan and what he can give us.
- 49:40Speaker 1: I think if anything like this is a concerning injury,
- 49:45Speaker 1: maybe going into the offseason you want to keep track
- 49:46Speaker 1: of it going into next year. But I'm pretty comfortable
- 49:50Speaker 1: like making Joe Ryan like my number two starting pitcher
- 49:53Speaker 1: for fantasy reasons going into drafts next year. What are
- 49:56Speaker 1: you thinking for twenty twenty five for Joe Ryan?
- 49:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm right there that if you had asked me,
- 50:02Speaker 2: is he at number one?
- 50:03Speaker 1: Two?
- 50:03Speaker 2: Three? Out of said two, he's a two. He does
- 50:06Speaker 2: have a little bit more of a risky profile just
- 50:08Speaker 2: because he is extremely a fly ball prone and so
- 50:12Speaker 2: he ends up with homer issues, which gets him a
- 50:15Speaker 2: little bit, you know, one of those headache kind of
- 50:18Speaker 2: guys to own because he can be just absolutely brilliant
- 50:20Speaker 2: and then he can blow up on you. But the
- 50:22Speaker 2: overall profile is absolutely the things that you're looking for. Veloscit.
- 50:27Speaker 2: He was up this season, He did seem healthier, did
- 50:30Speaker 2: seem like he's really come into his own at the
- 50:33Speaker 2: age of twenty eight. So I really think that there's
- 50:37Speaker 2: a lot to like with Joe Ryan. I can't fully
- 50:40Speaker 2: get to him being like my ace, my number one,
- 50:43Speaker 2: just because that the homer issues, But yeah, I have
- 50:48Speaker 2: no problem with him being a key part of my
- 50:52Speaker 2: rotation going forward. So I really like Joe Ryan. At
- 50:56Speaker 2: least this injury is not like a shoulder or something
- 50:58Speaker 2: like that, so there's there's a lot. There's not the
- 51:04Speaker 2: worst news here at this point.
- 51:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree, and especially like I think it is,
- 51:12Speaker 1: I would be careful with him too that Like it's
- 51:14Speaker 1: easy to also look at his profile and say, oh,
- 51:17Speaker 1: he's still, you know, younger than thirty. He's got a
- 51:21Speaker 1: pretty good stuff plus rating on all of his pitches,
- 51:24Speaker 1: Like could he lop down you know, that home run
- 51:28Speaker 1: rate by increasing the ground balls? And I would say
- 51:31Speaker 1: that it's always going to be a part of Joe
- 51:33Speaker 1: Ryan's game given the fastball that he throws and the
- 51:37Speaker 1: slot that he throws out of that he kind of
- 51:39Speaker 1: has this foolish rising fastball thing and it's not going
- 51:44Speaker 1: quite as fast as everybody else's, so like when it
- 51:46Speaker 1: gets squared up, it gets squared up, and so as
- 51:49Speaker 1: batters chase that at the top of the zone, that's
- 51:52Speaker 1: what's creating a lot of the flyballs. So I think
- 51:54Speaker 1: because of that, I think what we've seen this year
- 51:56Speaker 1: from Joe Ryan, I don't have a problem like penciling
- 51:59Speaker 1: it in the stats again next year, but I'm not
- 52:02Speaker 1: like looking for him to take another step forward and
- 52:06Speaker 1: become that fantasy ace. Yep.
- 52:08Speaker 2: I fully agree.
- 52:10Speaker 1: Yeah, Okay, the next injury we've got is a little
- 52:13Speaker 1: bit of a minor injury overall, but it is going
- 52:18Speaker 1: to be pretty significant because it is save season. I
- 52:20Speaker 1: don't know if you realize, but it is that time
- 52:23Speaker 1: of time of year when we're all scrapping for a
- 52:25Speaker 1: couple saves because the standings are tight and the bullpens
- 52:29Speaker 1: are volatile. And that is the Royals hunter. Harvey has
- 52:34Speaker 1: been placed on the aisle with a back issue of
- 52:36Speaker 1: his own, and that just pretty much clears the path
- 52:39Speaker 1: for Lucas Ersig to run with this saves closer job
- 52:44Speaker 1: in Kansas, say the rest of the way out. So
- 52:46Speaker 1: he picked up a save the last Royal save on Saturday,
- 52:50Speaker 1: just picked one up this afternoon, I believe. And so
- 52:54Speaker 1: it looks like it's already happening as Lucas Ersig came
- 52:56Speaker 1: over from the A's at the deadline. And I also
- 53:00Speaker 1: love this, Like we talked a lot about like building
- 53:03Speaker 1: bullpens for dynasty, like long term. I don't know if
- 53:07Speaker 1: there is a better target out there than Lucas Ersig
- 53:10Speaker 1: right now? What do you think?
- 53:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're you're right on that. We kind
- 53:13Speaker 2: of talked about him and uh, you know in the
- 53:19Speaker 2: kind of trade deadline podcasts and you know, thinking that
- 53:23Speaker 2: he could end up being that guy, and I think
- 53:26Speaker 2: he he will be be that guy. He's not overly exciting,
- 53:31Speaker 2: not overly sexy from a pitching perspective, but he just
- 53:34Speaker 2: gets the job done. And so I think he's one
- 53:37Speaker 2: of those that is you look into next year. I
- 53:40Speaker 2: think there's a good chance that he's like that steady
- 53:43Speaker 2: Eddie like closure that just does enough and you're not
- 53:46Speaker 2: thrilled with him, but you're but you're you're happy because
- 53:49Speaker 2: he's solid. So I really like what we see with
- 53:52Speaker 2: Ersik here, but also just tells you the fragility of
- 53:55Speaker 2: the bullpen hunter. Harvey was supposed to be the guy.
- 53:57Speaker 2: He was kind of a disaster since they brought him over,
- 54:00Speaker 2: Like it's that's just such a tough, tough gig with
- 54:04Speaker 2: the limited pitching you have, the limited repertoire you have,
- 54:08Speaker 2: Like if thick guys figure you out, you can be
- 54:10Speaker 2: out out of a job. Your control leaves you're out
- 54:12Speaker 2: of the job. Like it's it is such a dicey,
- 54:15Speaker 2: dicey game to play.
- 54:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think why I really like Ursak
- 54:19Speaker 1: as a dynasty kind of target is there's really nobody
- 54:23Speaker 1: else outside of Harvey in this Kansas City bullpen that
- 54:27Speaker 1: James MacArthur's had the role for a long time, but
- 54:29Speaker 1: he's a sinker ball pitcher and it has not looks
- 54:31Speaker 1: great at times. Ursak isn't a free agent until after
- 54:34Speaker 1: the twenty twenty nine season. He's still pre ARB, so
- 54:37Speaker 1: you're looking at like there's nobody else around in this
- 54:40Speaker 1: Kansas City bullpen. I think to give him trouble for
- 54:43Speaker 1: a couple of years outside of Harvey, and even there,
- 54:46Speaker 1: like he's not exactly had the greatest injury history coming
- 54:49Speaker 1: through the league. All right, well, we've got another injury
- 54:55Speaker 1: for a picture, and this is more of like a
- 54:58Speaker 1: continuation where we had the Chris Bryant injury a little
- 55:02Speaker 1: bit earlier, where I haven't brought him up in the
- 55:04Speaker 1: past couple months because again, this is somebody who I
- 55:08Speaker 1: think has just kind of totally fallen off of fantasy radars.
- 55:11Speaker 1: That is Hazy use Lozardo, the southpaw for the Miami Marlins.
- 55:14Speaker 1: It's been announced that he's officially done for the season,
- 55:18Speaker 1: and it's been a really tough season. If you were
- 55:21Speaker 1: out there acquiring him at the draft table, he was
- 55:23Speaker 1: a very hot commodity. Battled back injury, shoulder injuries, just
- 55:28Speaker 1: all sorts of nasty stuff all season only through sixty
- 55:32Speaker 1: six and two thirds with a five RA The Cane
- 55:35Speaker 1: hind took a huge step back from being in the
- 55:39Speaker 1: mid tens to seven point eight can nine this year.
- 55:44Speaker 1: I was interested in Luzardo coming into the season until
- 55:47Speaker 1: I saw the draft price. And I just don't know
- 55:50Speaker 1: if I can ever get behind Lozardo because it does
- 55:52Speaker 1: seem like this is oddly one of those guys who's
- 55:55Speaker 1: always got his backers in drafts, and like I have
- 55:58Speaker 1: always loved the profile, I just don't think I can
- 56:01Speaker 1: never get behind it because it's like James Paxton two point.
- 56:04Speaker 2: Zero, right, Yeah, that was not the comp I was
- 56:09Speaker 2: thinking of, But I'm not gonna disagree with it here.
- 56:12Speaker 2: It is there's a lot to like always injures throws hard,
- 56:18Speaker 2: and I think this is the hard one is that,
- 56:19Speaker 2: like you look at the profile, you look at the
- 56:21Speaker 2: skill set and it is really really good, and you're
- 56:25Speaker 2: just like, if I could only get one hundred and
- 56:27Speaker 2: fifty in its out of the guy, if I could
- 56:29Speaker 2: only get that, And to your point, I think there's
- 56:31Speaker 2: always gonna be guys that like are taking that gamble
- 56:33Speaker 2: on him and hoping that he turns into what you
- 56:37Speaker 2: want him to be. But like, I think the time
- 56:40Speaker 2: is almost starting to pass for that. Like he you know,
- 56:43Speaker 2: he's gonna be twenty seven going to next year, like
- 56:45Speaker 2: that's the prime of his career, and we're just not
- 56:49Speaker 2: certain he's gonna be able to stay healthy. So I
- 56:52Speaker 2: wouldn't be shocked if I owned some shares of Lozardo
- 56:55Speaker 2: next year. But I'm owning him as like my sixth
- 56:58Speaker 2: seventh starter, and I think some he's gonna jump before me,
- 57:01Speaker 2: And I think that's what it comes down to price,
- 57:03Speaker 2: So I think, yeah, it's it's gonna be unfortunate. And
- 57:07Speaker 2: it's not like he's pitching for a fabulous team who's
- 57:09Speaker 2: up the wins, Like there's there's a few knocks against him.
- 57:13Speaker 2: At this point, I will say, I expect the strikeouse
- 57:16Speaker 2: to jump back, the veloss he jump backs. He's just
- 57:17Speaker 2: been so banged up this year. Get him a full offseason.
- 57:20Speaker 2: I think that'll be good. But yeah, let somebody else
- 57:23Speaker 2: invest here, that's for sure.
- 57:25Speaker 1: Okay, we we have one more injury to discuss, and
- 57:29Speaker 1: this one's a little bit of like a personal cheeseball
- 57:31Speaker 1: guy for me, just because I've really enjoyed the production
- 57:34Speaker 1: that win Seal Perez from the Detroit Tigers has put
- 57:37Speaker 1: up this year. He is down with an oblique injury
- 57:40Speaker 1: and this might end up end up ending his season.
- 57:43Speaker 1: But if it does end a season, it was a
- 57:45Speaker 1: pretty solid kind of kickoff for his career, as he
- 57:49Speaker 1: put up a two forty three eighty six slash line.
- 57:53Speaker 1: But the big thing is he was playing towards the
- 57:56Speaker 1: top of that Detroit lineup, so he's able to rack
- 57:58Speaker 1: up forty nine runs in just ninety seven games, also
- 58:02Speaker 1: put up nine homers, nine stolen bases. I've loved his
- 58:07Speaker 1: versatility in terms of he should qualify going forward at
- 58:11Speaker 1: second base and outfield. I believe. Uh no, I take
- 58:16Speaker 1: that back, that was only this year, but he could
- 58:18Speaker 1: maybe pick a back up because that second base and
- 58:20Speaker 1: shortstop eligibility came from his time in the minors, he shured,
- 58:25Speaker 1: So he'll only have outfield next year. But he's only
- 58:28Speaker 1: twenty four, And am I getting a little bit over
- 58:32Speaker 1: my skis here? Like I'm looking this is maybe like
- 58:35Speaker 1: maybe my one weakness in fantasy is like utility guys
- 58:38Speaker 1: that are switches offer homers and stolen bases and runs
- 58:44Speaker 1: and play every day like the Willie Castro's Luiswinhefos. I
- 58:49Speaker 1: love these types of players, and I do feel like
- 58:51Speaker 1: when Seal Perez has the skill set to be able
- 58:54Speaker 1: to be one of these going forward. What do you think,
- 58:57Speaker 1: am I am I out of bounds? Or am I
- 58:59Speaker 1: is this maybe like my number one blind spot and
- 59:01Speaker 1: I need to try to learn to get over it.
- 59:05Speaker 2: I think both things can be true. Yeah, Like I
- 59:10Speaker 2: think to your point, like Prez is definitely one of
- 59:13Speaker 2: those players that is useful but not reliable, if that
- 59:19Speaker 2: makes sense. Like it's not the guy that you want
- 59:20Speaker 2: to go in planning to draft. He's not the guy
- 59:24Speaker 2: that you want to go in playing to build your
- 59:25Speaker 2: team around. But if you're getting late in the draft
- 59:29Speaker 2: and he's still there, and he's like the guy that
- 59:33Speaker 2: you don't mind picking up to plug the holes and
- 59:37Speaker 2: if you run into injuries, like he's in that mold.
- 59:40Speaker 2: And that's where I think your point, Willie Castro's those
- 59:44Speaker 2: those types of guys have always been useful, but just
- 59:47Speaker 2: not the guy you want to rely on. So I
- 59:50Speaker 2: look at him and I go, yeah, we're probably talking,
- 59:53Speaker 2: you know, at his best. Maybe you're hoping for a
- 59:56Speaker 2: fifteen to fifteen season where he's maybe scored or in
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: eighty runs something like that, which is very much replacement level.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: Like that's that's what you're getting with with this. Even
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: with what he did this year, he was eight percent
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: below the league average as a hitter, and so like,
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: I think that's what that's what that's hard about that
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: those guys are fun. They kind of there's the scrappy,
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: exciting guys because of that, and so that's where I
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: think you do need to get over it a little bit.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: But please don't because I want to exploit this next
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: year a fantasy drafts. Yeah, I like it. I think
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: it's useful. He's a bench guy for me.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I guess that I should have like
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: prefaced it with that too. It's not like I'm out
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: there like trying to pay big dollars or really jump
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: the draft on those types of guys. It's more of
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: like a hey, I've got a dollar at the end
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: of the draft. Hey, I've I'm going through my bench
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: draft at the end of the auction and I need
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: somebody to fill holes. Especially, I mean, it is replacement
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: level for the big league level from her fantasy game.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: That's actually like a multi dollar player in terms of
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: like fifteen fifteen eighty runs, even if the RBIs are
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: a little bit light, like because it's just hard to
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: find guys that offer that sort of consistency, and especially
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: given where you know Castro and Hifo Perez have hit
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: at the top of lineups. That's what I really am
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: valuing too, that like, you know, this type of player.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: Sometimes I would say, like the line of where it
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: goes too far is when you're starting to get into
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: like the Laoti Tavs, Like that's where it's starting to
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: get too risky, and then it does become like, hey,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: this is a total zero for your fantasy team because
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: if you're hitting at the bottom of the lineup, you
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: just can't put up the runs in RBI to keep
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: pace that it makes everything crumble. So it is certainly fragile.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: But I think this is also like how you build
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: competitive teams is by like making sure that one of
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: these guys is your fifth out fiel, your m I
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: and just kind of there for you when you need it.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: I think it also comes down a little bit too,
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: what like how did they arrive at being that guy.
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: Like this will sound weird, but like how different is
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: Michael Harris from wincil Perez. Like you're talking about a
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: guy that we've struggled, Like he bats to the bottom
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: the lineup, so and get those potentials he's got give
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: me more wrong, he's got more overall talent, he's got
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: a little more power and things like that. But like
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: when you actually start talking about the end result, it's
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: not that different. But Harris got all this helium because
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: of what he could become when could where his pres
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: just kind I was just like working his way through it.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: Was a solid ballplayer, always useful where he was, and
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: so nobody's worried about bringing him up too early and
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: things like that. And you end up having a guy
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: at the top of the lineup that's getting all those
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: counting stats versus another guy that maybe has this upside
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: but it's at the bottom of the lineup. It's interesting
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: how they end up like being similar in long term value.
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: I get that I compared to you guys that were
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: probably not that comparable, But I'm making a point.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: Yeah, no, And I mean I think especially when you're
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: starting to talk about like that's where the differentiation of
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: like the barrel rate, and like sometimes it's easy to
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: fall in love with the barrel rate because like Harris
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: has slashed a double digit barrel rate in the past,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: the guys I'm talking about never have and never will
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: like that.
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: It's the hope of what can be, yeah, versus that
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: like I'm comfortable with what you are yeah.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: And I think a lot of it is like what
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: you also mentioned in terms of like that grindiness that
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: they have because they're switch hitters. That's how they get
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: to the decent average is by switch hitting as opposed
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: to like actually being good hitters that they're they're poking.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: They're poking balls like across the field and getting and
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: getting lucky with the battle ball a little bit. But
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: like they have the ability to get that ball in
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: the field, which I think does throw some modern kind
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: of like defenses for a loop because you know, they're
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: used to strike outs, homers and walks and kind of
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: when it gets in the field, I think it can
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: surprise them players. Okay, well, that's gonna wrap us up
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: for news and notes. Here we will go into some
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: of the baseball release calendar because we had one big
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: addition that was slotted on there today with Bowman Chrome
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: September eleventh. That's a date to release something that's for sure,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: and so that will be coming in just under a month.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: That's currently like the tenet of one. I wouldn't be
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: surprised at that shifts, considering that we still have all
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: those other releases coming out that we've discussed eight twenty
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: one Panini Boys Summer eight, twenty three Tops Pro Debut,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: eight twenty three Tops Pristine, eight twenty eight, Panini Prism
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: eight thirty Tops Complete Sets. So this is definitely that
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: time of year where I mean Donners has totally fallen
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: off the schedule, where fanatics Tops Panini are shuffling things
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: around as they're trying to get things out before the
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: end of season. But the Bowman Chrome twenty twenty four
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: pre sale already went live today. It already sold out.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: You were looking at two hundred and seventy dollars a
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: box with two autos and sixty cards in it. So
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: I would say the pricing is a little bit better
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: than what we're looking at for Tops Chrome, but you're
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: looking at some pretty steep prices again as people are
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: going to be chasing big time rookies. And we've also
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: got news that Leo Devreese, the number one international prospect
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: from the San Diego Padres, will have his first auto
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: in this product, kind of similar to way Ethan Salas
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: was last year. So it's going to be quite the show.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: I think when Bowman Chrome comes out and we'll do
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: a bigger preview then any initial thoughts from you over there, Yeah, I.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: Think at the end of the day, it comes down
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: to like, this is a fun set to watch at
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: this point, but yeah, the pricings is going to be
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: the story about it, and the Chrome always is up
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: being a difficult product because you are getting a little
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: bit more into the international prospects, which have a lot
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: more variability, a lot more excitement sometimes but also a
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: lot of the variability, and so it's a little bit
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: harder for such prospect but the price tags is no different.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: So fun set it something we should definitely dig into,
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: something I'm probably not going to be opening.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, I was just kind of like thinking that
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: as you're you're talking there, I was like, Man, when's
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: the next time in my lifetime I'm ever going to
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: open any Bowman Chrome? And I don't know at this
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: rate it's gonna be.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: I almost bought like a box of like twenty seventeen
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: or twenty just like what can I find that there's
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: literally no good prospects just to say I opened Bowman,
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: that's where I've stooped in New Lows.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: That's boy, that is a that's a good one. I Yeah,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: I feel you, especially when you're out there like opening
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: Big League and stuff. Sometimes, Yeah, you're just like I
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: need to open some cards.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: I'm sitting here excited about protebe now.
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that it will be a good one. Okay, Well,
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: we are going to wrap up the staff here and
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: we will be back with some buy sells on some
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: players that we've enjoyed their performances over the past few months.
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: So stick around, all right, Welcome back everybody, and for
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: our second half year, we're going to get back to
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: our roots of cards and categories. When this is kind
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: of like what we always envisioned this podcast kind of
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: always being based in, and that is how do our
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: how does our love for baseball overall, and just like
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: how much baseball we consume translate into fantasy baseball translate
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: in card collecting, and I think a lot of that
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: as I've heard from people who maybe like it didn't
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: quite fully click, like how interconnected both of those values
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: and kind of up and downs track, you know, side
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: by side work until they started listening to this podcast
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: and having conversations with us. And so I think this
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: is kind of like I'm excited because this is kind
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: of classically what we've been doing together since we were
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: like you know, back in like first grade, of like
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: tracking which players we thought were breaking out, which players
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: we thought were worth investing in from both Like I
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: would say, we're probably taking a little bit more of
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: like a dynasty keeper slant here from fantasy values, but
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: certainly I think a lot of what we're going to
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: go through is going to apply to twenty twenty five drafts,
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: so you can even kind of bookmark this for next spring.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: But certainly same thing with card value that I think
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: we've got a handful of names here that we're going
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: to discuss, and not only are we looking at up
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: arrows next to them for that fantasy value, but you're
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: looking at or down arrows. I guess this is buy
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: and sell, but we do have more buys because it
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: is kind of more exciting time for those buys right
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: now that you look at players who are reaching a
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: next level or maybe are starting to show signs of
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: slowing down, and so I guess we'll just get into
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: it from here. So I'm gonna kick it off with
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: the first player that we've got, and that is second
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: baseman from the Washington Nationals, Luis Garcia, and he has
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: been an absolute tear since the beginning of July. He's
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: hitting three sixty three, four oh seven six nineteen for
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: one to eighty one WRC plus came with seven homers,
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: eight stolen bases. He's up to seventeen dollars in value
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: now in our roto or in our RAS ball Player Raider,
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: So that's on the total season since July. Like with
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: that sort of line, he's been certainly nearing a top twenty,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: top twenty five sort of bat, especially when you're looking
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: at that steals and power combo. But this is a
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: player who I think has had one of the prettiest
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: swings coming through like the miners over the past few years.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: He's only twenty four years old right now. So Brew,
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: what do you love and Luis Garcia's profile and what
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: he can offer for us going forward into the future.
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's one of those where there's a
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: few things that come together. First of all, playing on
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: the Nationals, like you're he's he's very much forgotten, Like
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: he doesn't he didn't start with a big name, and
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: he's got other big, bigger names around him, and so
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: he's just been really really good, but not absolutely unbelievable.
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: Then also doing a lot, like a lot of the
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: improvement kind of mid season. He's just one of those
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: that he makes great contact. He really makes sure to
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: kind of square the ball up, put it on, put
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: it on the line. And then because the rest of
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: his profile is even say just average, it all plays up.
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: He can like I said, he even though spread speed
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: is just literally league average. I think we've talked about
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: this a little bit with the Nationals a little free
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: running team this year because what else you got to lose,
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: But he's actually been pretty efficient at it, and so
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: I really like that. It seems like he's really kind
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: of growing as a natural hitter. And then it's making
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: the rest of his tools play up. It's making his
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: speed a little bit better because he's on base a
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: little bit more. It's making the power play a little
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: bit more because he is when he squares the ball
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: up so much, it just happens to leave the yard
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: a few times more So, I really just like the very,
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: very well rounded profile, and you know, it's not hard
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: to look at it and be like, yeah, this is
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: the guy that's gonna is in that twenty twenty conversation.
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: I don't know that he gets there this year, but
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: it's it's it's definitely within reason. It's definitely possible that
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: he can do that. So I think he's gonna be
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: a guy that goes into next year and it's going
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: to be a pretty much a draft steal. I don't
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: think because he's in Washington he's going to get some
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: of that pre draft helium that folks tend to, you know,
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: go in the offseason and stop being like, wait a second,
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: I missed this. I think that the little bit of
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: Washington Tinge is going to keep him to be a bargain.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: Yeah. I totally agree that, Like, and you can see
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: it just the way that, like this year, he's increased
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: his hard hit rate too, without having to really sacrifice
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: anything from like the rest of the profile. That it's
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: just a very smooth swing and you can tell that
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: He's a very pure hitter from the left side. It
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: just kind of took a couple of years longer than
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: I think people initially expected for it to all come together.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: He debuted in twenty twenty when he was twenty and
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: really came through that national system quickly, especially on the
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: heels of like the Juan Soto kind of trained. The
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: hype was very real when Luis Garcia initially debuted, But
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: I think all that package like works pretty well because
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: not only are lots of people been burnt by him
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: over the past couple of years because of that, but
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: because he debuted so young. Like That's what I've also
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: liked here about the cart collecting is that, like he
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: debuted and his cards were in twenty twenty one, I believe.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: Let me just make sure that I have that right. Yeah,
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: twenty twenty one where his rookie cards. So you've got
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: lots of print runs out there, but also lots of
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: cool sets, lots of autos out there. He was included
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: in all sorts of auto inserts in patches and things
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: like that. But the prices has certainly started to creep
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: up a little bit with him being hot, but certainly
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: you're looking at somebody who's twenty four years old, going
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: to be at like four hundred and fifty hits, and
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: I think on a trajectory for probably a couple of
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: All Star appearances. This is kind of the perfect sort
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: of package where we talk about like a lot during
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: the All Star break about guys who start making like
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: their first All Star appearance and when it can roll
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: into more. I think Luis Garcia has got a perfect
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: just set up for that in Washington, that you can
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: be looking at somebody who could go down as I
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: think a pretty decent star of this year. This kind
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: of like era in terms of card collecting, and then
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: you just package that in with all the fantasy stuff
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: in terms of people being burnt on him and not
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: necessarily I think, always wanting to begin giving him a
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: second chance. That I think you're looking at a lot
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: of just great storms coming together to be able to
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: find both an investment for fantasy and baseball cards.
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you do. You just have to be
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: careful in the market because there's other Louis Garcia's out there.
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: That's a good point, So just be a little cautious.
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: I was, I was trying to look just kind of
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: to the point that card prices and where where he's sitting,
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: and I'm like, hey, he's not too explained, Like, that's
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: not Louis Carcia. It is Louis Garciao, clarify, it's not
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: that Louis Garcia. And so I think they're I think
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: you just gotta be careful out there. But to your point, like,
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: I think that you can pick him up pretty reasonably
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: price right now. And if you're looking to, especially for
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: a PC, he's a great PC type of gu that
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: in a year or two you can making them all
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: star teams like that, the card prices are gonna jump,
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: especially in some of those autos, the young things like that.
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: They're not too hard to find right now. And I
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: was so shocked to the number of Louis Carcia's out there, by.
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: The way, Yeah, and he was there. There are a lot,
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: let's just put it there. But yes, the oh you
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: I was talking about from a print run, you meant
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: total number of.
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: I'm talking about a total number of Blue Garcias I'm
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: sitting here, I'm like, man, this is really hard, Like
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: are we talking about the Louis Garcia from the Blue Jays?
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: What about the picture for the Astros we have. The
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: prospect for the Phillies was just just be careful when
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: you're trying to buy any Luis Garcia stock out there,
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: because you could be easily fooled by non non licensed products.
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: Let's just leave it.
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: That way, Yes, exactly. Okay, Well, let's get to our
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: next player, and that is Logan o'hapi, catcher from the
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: Los Angeles Angels at Anaheim. He has had a great
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: breakout season in terms of especially just providing value at
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: the catcher position, which has been I think it was
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: it's been deeper this year than it has been in
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: the past, but certainly it's not been to where you
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: have You can overlook his performance with sixteen homers now
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: in the season, with a two fifty six average, fifty
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: runs scored and forty six RBI. He is only twenty
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: four years old, and so I think that combination along
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: with a lot of what you were talking about with
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: Luis Garcia. You're playing in Anaheim on this Angels team
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: that just doesn't seem like it's going to be getting
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: out of rut anytime soon. So good for racking up
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: just straight raw playing time, great home ballpark, just great
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: situation to turn into a clubhouse leader and you know,
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: maybe perennial All Star because there's nobody else around you
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: to go in front of you. That a lot of
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: the things that I think we just talked about with
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: Luis Garcia. There's a little bit more strike and miss
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: and striking miss and swing and miss in Logan O
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: Hoppy's game than Luis Garcia. But for a catcher, and
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: you're looking at somebody who plays solid defense behind the plate,
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: You're looking at the gra directory as somebody who could
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: really turn into one of these league stars out in
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: Los Angeles, Anaheim, California at large.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: Are you on board here with Logano on Hoppy?
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I am. I've always like O HOPI. I think
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: he's got a really good profile, especially to Agin. It
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: was put in context for a catcher, and I think
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: that's what you like is he's not overly flashy, he's
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: not doesn't seem to be it's gonna be overly injury prone,
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: and he's just gonna provide solid everyday production. And I
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: think that's like when you look at the catcher position,
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: you know, I think you either have to invest at
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: the top end or you need to kind of wait,
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: like that's generally the approach have to take. And I
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: think O Hopy is one of those guys right now.
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: I don't know how long it'll be this way that
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: he's at the beginning of that wait list where he's like, Okay,
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: I might a little later in the draft pick this
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: guy up. You know, I'm gonna be happy because if
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: he hits fifteen twenty homers and hits you know, two fifty,
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: I'm just I'm just thrilled with that because I got
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: really just above average production and didn't have to pay
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: much for it and didn't get stuck with the twentieth
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: catcher on the board.
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: Yeah, and if you're looking for his cards out there,
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: his rookie cards were in twenty twenty three sets. He
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: also has a lot of them. He was a pretty
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: big name. But he's also got a lot of very
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: affordable autos in terms of you know that ten to
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: twenty dollars range that I think make great investments because
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: you know, this is the type of player where once
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: he gets a couple of All Star games underneath his belt,
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: like you can start turning those into you know, slight
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: price increases as they come through and you've got all
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: sorts of just like good looking cards. He's a very
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: photographic dude, and I think it's a certainly lots of
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: choices out there, and especially now that the twenty twenty
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: three sets have really slowed down and kind of you know,
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: flat lined in terms of price, Now is the time
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: to strike before you know, Ohapi maybe starts picking up
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: you know, some recognition throughout the league and you know,
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: hitting that upswing.
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: Yeah, just looking at his card prices, what's sold is
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: he's really one of those interesting guys right now that
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: you that you'd be surprised at some of the prices
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: of some of the cards, but you'd also get some
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: see a ton of deals out there. I think he's
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: one of those guys that's probably kind of like a
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: PC player type right now, where you know, he's probably
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: got a decent following out in the what would you
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: call it the greater Los Angeles Anaheim type area or
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: something like that at large. But at the same time,
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: like it's not like there's not going to be deals
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: out there that you can find on Ohapi. So I
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: think that there's I think he's gonna be a fun
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: one from a collector's perspective, and you have to think
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: the Angels are going to try to build around him.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: It's not like you they're going to cast him off
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: anytime soon.
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: It does seem that way that they do really seem
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: to love him out there in Anaheim, that anything you
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: ever read from their front office, they absolutely love them.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: And you do need some sort of anchor to kind
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: of keep things moving along. And I think, oh, happy
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: is that guy out for the out there for the Angels. Okay, Well,
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: next guy that we have is a little bit on
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: the other end of the range, I think, and that
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: is Francisco Lindor, a shortstop for the New York Mets, who,
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: after this evening when he popped a homer, his season
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: line is now up to two sixty three three thirty six,
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: four sixty five. That's a one to twenty eight WRC
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: plus with twenty three homers and twenty four stolen bases
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: on pace for his second straight thirty thirty season. He
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: is up to thirty one dollars in our play player Raider, which, uh,
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: if we'd said those things after May, I think you
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: might have been a little bit surprised because he did
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: not start out the gate great, but certainly has been
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: a boom for people who stuck with him and gotten
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: through it. The biggest thing that I'm looking at here,
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: certainly like for fantasy and Dynasty keeper situations, I am
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: hoping that maybe the Lindor owner out there is still
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: thinking back to what he put up in April and
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: May and was really struggling and just did not look
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: like he was going to get of the gate before
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: he caught fire, didn't making the All Star Game, even
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: even though he certainly was deserving of that, But with
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: that just slow start, it it kind of tainted everything
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: from that beginning. So that's what I'm looking for that
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: you're looking at a guy who I think, especially in drafts,
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: this is the type of player I love taking. Like
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: if you're on that, like if you have an early
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: first round pick and then you can get into the
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: two three turn, popping Lindor a little bit early, like
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: late in that second round sets you up for absolutely everything.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: So like you take in one of your first top picks,
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: you know, one of those absolute studs that you're gonna
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: put into your lineup and never move out. Second pick,
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: you take Lindor, who can offer you another twenty five,
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: twenty five or thirty thirty. I think I have to
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: like almost pencil them in for a thirty thirty season
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: even next year, and then from there you're the world's
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: your oyster. You can go for a pitcher, you can
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: go for a closer, you can go for another huge
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: bat that this is a perfect type of player in
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: that second round. And then when we're looking at the
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: card side, by the end of this year, we're already
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: gonna be talking about Francisco Lindor at a Hall of
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: Fame resume. He's at fifty two fangrafts. War the defense
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: is obviously really carrying his profile. But when it's all
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: said and done, you're looking at somebody who's gonna end
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: up like in the seventies, probably seventies eighties for war total,
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: and that's an easy Hall of Famer. So when you
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: look at his prices right now, I think that's not
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: reflected in the market. I've looked at his rookie stuff
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: as a bit expensive, but overall, like when you're talking what
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: some of the prices for like your Nolan Arnado's and
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: other kind of players that that ILK are right now,
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: Lindor is not in that range that I think now
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: is the time to buy before, especially in a market
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: like New York. This dude looks like he's going to
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame.
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I think there's a lot of guys that are
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: in that like overall scenario from like a card perspective
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: to Lindor's the gold Smith's I think Aaron I are
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: like guys that are kind of on the back of
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: their back half of their careers. But I think the
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: difference with Lindor, you know what we call that was
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: like he's actually not as old as you think. He's
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: just thirty, and I think he's had a few kind
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: of rough starts to a few seasons here in New York,
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: which is really kind of tainted the perspective of him,
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: that painting him of like this thirty four to thirty
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: five year old, which he's not. And I agree, like
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: there's a lot to love with Francisco Lindor, And I
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: think if you compare him to some of those guys
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: who were in the first round, like he's doing what
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: you hope some of them will do, like, and it's
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: this really interesting dynamic of like veterans are still worth it,
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: Veterans are still great players, and the fact that he's
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: done it so long. You know, Yes, everybody can pull
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: in Anthony Rendon and disappear off the face of the earth, right,
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: anybody can do that, but you're in year out. This
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: guy is just so solid, so useful. I'm shocked that
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: is because of his personality and just the kind of
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: way he plays that he doesn't have a bigger card market,
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: doesn't have a bigger fantasy impact, like from a market perspective. So, yeah,
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: I think this is a great one. I fully agree.
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: Lindor is an easy buy for me.
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, I think it's just like everything is. It's
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: crazy from both perspectives, like how cheap can be had
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: and just like I will take all the shares I can. Yeah,
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: especially after back to back thirty seasons, you would you
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: think that the hype would be huge. Okay, well let's
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: get into some pictures now. So we're sticking with the byside. Still,
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: we're still staying positive, And we mentioned this guy in
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: the top half of the show. If for some reason
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: you skipped to the second half, you can go back
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: listen to us talk about his debut that is the
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: Minnesota Twins. Zebbie Matthews as I didn't even give his
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: performance from last night during his debut. I've rattled off
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: a lot of minor league stats. But he made the
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: debut against the Royals and got that victory, went five
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: innings with five k's, no walks, gave up one homer,
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: and yeah it was electric. I didn't even check his
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: stuff plus numbers right now, just to see kind of
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: where those have settled, and it looks like stuff plus
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: isn't up yet. But in terms of the overall pitch bot,
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: he's about a little bit about above average on the
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: cutter and the fastball, and the slider is in there too.
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: All the stuff indicates that he probably should end up
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: having a pretty good slider. Sometimes that doesn't show up,
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: I think in the first start, just especially given nerves
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: and trying to get used, you know, to the majors
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: and so ZEBI Matthews, I think you're looking at here,
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: a twenty four year old. You highlighted the height and
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: just the be the ability for a guy like this
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: to stick on the pitching mound in the first half.
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: Cards are pretty limited. You're not looking at too much.
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: You're looking at some minor league cards. He has then
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: have a Bowman card. He will have a tops Now
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: card here coming out, So he's going to be I
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: would think, in a lot of twenty twenty five products
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: given what he's going to be putting up here down
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: the stretch. And so, yeah, are you out there going
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: to be snapping up Zebbie Matthews cards and shares this offseason? Yeah?
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: I think I think so definitely from the fancy perspective,
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: I'll be picking up shares, if not already from a
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: card perspective, you know, you have to be very careful
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: with starting pitching, and so I think that you have
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: to be very careful with him. I do think he's
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: one of those guys that will hold some value for
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: the first year or two and then every pitcher kind
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: of fallows off and you can give like burl Ander
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: rookies for like five bucks like it's it's it's a
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: whole different dynamic. But because his current card market is
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: so narrow, like you're talking about like his minor league
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: cards going for ten dollars right now, because literally there's
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: nothing out there. And so if you want the guy
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: that just came up made a great debut, you gotta win.
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: He threw seventy seven pitches by the way, in that
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: five inning start, Like he was very efficient. So you
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: can see this guy going deep into games. But yeah,
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: his base cards are just we're just popping off yesterday
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: and today for roughly ten dollars a pop because there's
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: nothing else out there. And so I think he's a
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: really fun one to watch, and you know, it's kind of, uh,
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: this is a very unfair comparison, so bear with me.
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: But like it kind of like when Spencer Strider came up,
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: and I don't think the card market was very slow
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: to adapt to Spencer Strider, like because he didn't have
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: you know, he kind of flew through the system, didn't
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: have all these cards and Bowman's and things like that
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: with autos, like like he wasn't huge in that in
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: that like he had one, but he wasn't huge in
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: that set. He wasn't like the Dieu target. And so
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: when he made his break and he showed up in
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: like Series one the next year, his cards were like
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: some they were expensive, but not all of them. There
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: was guys that had no idea who Spencer Strider was,
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: and they were selling parallels and autos for five bucks
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: and ten bucks and things like that, and then you'd
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: be like, wait this second, what am I missing? Because
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: then the next one to go for sixty. Like, the
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: card market was very slow to adapt to Strider, And
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: that's where I think that there's a comparison with ZEBI here,
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: is that he's gonna fly a little bit under the radar,
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: I think the rest of the year, only having a
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: few few months, but he would be very very good
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: next year, and you're gonna be picking up his cards
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: for a few bucks, and all of a sudden, somebody's
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: gonna realize he's actually pretty good, and then all of
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: a sudden, the market's kind of kind of open up
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: for him. So that's what I'm really interested in for
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: mister Matthews.
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I think that's totally fair. You're also I mean,
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: you're talking about somebody playing in Minnesota, which isn't exactly
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: like a boon for card collecting and like have a
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: huge demand the way that you know when we're talking
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: about like the Mets, that like it is a little
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: bit more limited, so you can find some pathways to
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: be able to make investments. And I do agree that
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: like this has the makings of somebody next year where
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: he could get into the back end of that Minnesota
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: rotation be released in series one. People don't fully know
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: who he is, treat him like a normal starting pitcher
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: in their sales, and then you look at somebody who
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: by the end of the year might be competing for
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: Rookie of the Year in the American League, and those
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: prices have shot through the roof.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: Absolutely, Okay, Well, we're going to go with another picture here,
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: and I think of everyone, this one might be like
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: when people see this that we might get a few
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: eye rolls, because if you haven't been paying attention, Ryan
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: Nelson has really turned a corner and turned into a
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: very solid picture. Since the beginning of July, he's put
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: up a two ninety era over forty nine and two
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: thirds innings. But the big key here is that the
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: strikeouts have started to materialize for Ryan Nelson as he's
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: grown into his overall profile, and it's been one that's
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: been led with just kind of like a so so
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: fastball by like you know, the overall stuff, ratings and stuff,
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: and it does seem that he's finally gotten control and
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: command of all this as he's twenty six years old
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: and you know, the forty nine strikeouts over those last
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: forty nine and two thirds certainly outstrips what he was
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: doing before when he was putting up k ninees, the
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: sixes and sevens and just kind of looked like a
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: really blah starting pitcher. I've been really starting to kind
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: of get interested in him, and he is currently on
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: the outside looking in at that Arizona rotation. But you
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: just had Merril Kelly returning from his shoulder injury, Zach
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: Gallon just left his last start with cramps, and you know,
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: through like almost two hundred and fifteen innings last year,
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: so they've got to watch him down the stretch. You're
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: looking at Jordan Montgomery continuing to struggle here and there.
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: Eduardo Rodriguez just worked his way back from his shoulder issue,
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: so it's not hard to find your pathway back into
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: the starting rotation for Ryan Nelson. This is also a
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: guy who's got cards buried in Commons boxes everywhere, because
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: he was in the twenty nineteen Bowman Chrome set with
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: his first and I mean, I'm sure I've got tons
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: of them because it was everywhere, like it seemed like
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: a card you ran into everywhere. Lots of parallels and
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: autos out there that are trading super cheaply. So I
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: think it's not even asking that much to invest in
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: this guy who could certainly turn around into twenty twenty
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: five and be an All Star. And so, Brew, is
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: there anything like you're really honed in on that has
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: happened for Ryan Nelson this season that you're like, Wow,
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: this is really what I was looking for that has
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: taken him to another level of a star pitcher.
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: In my mind, Yeah, I thought, well, you did a
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: great job kind of going back and seeing, like showing
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: what he's done recently, which I think people don't realize
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: because when he was first coming to one of minors,
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: he was actually really really interesting picture to watch because
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: he was doing a lot of things really really well.
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: From the aspect of control, he was pretty high strikeouts,
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: He was like a twelve thirteen k or nine guy.
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: He was, you know, really showing a lot of great potential.
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: Then once he got called up, like he definitely took
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: some time to find his path, and then bouncing around
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: at Tripa there for Arizona, which isn't easy place to pitch,
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: definitely kind of dampered things on him. And so I
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: think part of what I'm interested in and excited about
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: is like he showed this potential to minors and it's
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: just taken a little bit of time to work out.
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: And I feel like he's doing it under the cover
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: of night to agree to your point, like he doesn't
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: clearly have a role, but yet why shouldn't he? And
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: so I think that's really exciting because this is one
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: of those guys that could be a diamond and the rough.
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: You could go in next year and pick them up
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: at the very end of the draft and be very
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: very happy with what you get with the guy like
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: Ryan Nelson, especially as he's you know, I think he's
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: making some adjustments. You can see even like start to
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: start his pitch mixes is kind of being played with
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: two degrees. So I really like that the other piece
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: that you called out, and so you're just done a
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: great analysis. That's what I'm getting at is from a
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: card market perspective, there is nobody is in on Ryan Nelson,
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: and that is what makes a guy so attractive when
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: you're kind of trying to play the card market. Is
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: you're right, you're in dollar boxes here and you're picking
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: up sapphire first and you're you're picking up autos for
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: a buck, like you can really invest in a guy
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: like this, and if he does hit, you know that
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: dollar auto that you bought for you a refractor out
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: of four ninety nine is now a twenty five dollars card.
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: And so there's a lot that you can lead into
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: here with a very very low, low risk Because at
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: the end of the day, you buy an auto Ryan
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: Nelson for a buck now, and Ryan Nelson is pitching
- 1:34:28Speaker 2: for the Diamondbacks, it's just kind of middle of the road.
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: Next year, you can sell a dollar Ry Nelson auto,
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: like you're not taking a huge risk, but there's a
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: huge upside to it. So a lot of the different
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: dynamics here with Ryan Nelson. So you're right, he's kind
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: of funny to have on this list, But I think
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: I think that he can continue to grow and all
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: of a sudden, you're gonna look back and be like,
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: why did I see this coming? Why didn't I see
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: this coming?
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree. And this is also something I'm
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: starting to evaluate from cards right now too, is starting
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: to look at some of these playoff teams and look
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: at some of the fringe guys that could be you know,
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: just dudes in that playoff run, because I think along
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: with the All Star break in season, obviously, like good
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: performances and debuts help bumps. But in the playoffs, especially
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: when there's just less baseball volume going on and people
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: start migrating over to the baseball card side a little bit,
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: somebody like Ryan Nelson that if he has a great
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: outing in the playoffs or somehow like wins an NLCS
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: MVP or something, you know, it's it doesn't take much
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: that like, this is the type of player where that
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: market can really shoot through the roof quickly. And yeah,
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: certainly not only like if you you know, are at
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: a card show and are looking for these cards in
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: those dollar boxes. If you are a card collector, Ryan
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: Nelson's probably mixed into your commons here and there that
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: like maybe you've got some parallels of that twenty nineteen
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: Bowmen Chrome first or is twenty twenty three rookie cards.
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: What I do is I like to try to look
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: at the playoff teams and start maybe like planning to
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: dig out cards and players that like I might have
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: sitting in random boxes just to prep for that playoff
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: time and say, all right, I've got some of my
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: diamondbacks laid over here. I've got you know, some of
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: my orioles set up over here, and that way you're
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: able to react pretty quickly on eBay and get those
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: listed when you need to.
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: Absolutely, there's just a ton of fun that's like, this
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: is like prospecting and reverse like. But people don't don't
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: play that game as much. But you're right, it's the
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: Randy Rose Arena effect. You get a guy that you're
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: just he's he's got got a lot of cards. He
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: just doesn't seem like he's doing something. All of a sudden,
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: he plans a flag and yeah it was it was
- 1:36:44Speaker 2: worth it.
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: Okay. Next player we have on the by side is
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: rookie Sasaki who is not on a team yet. He
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: is a pitcher over in Japan in the MPB and
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: he is twenty two. It's been a little bit of
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: a tough year as he's battled some arm issues were there,
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: but has still thrown a two twenty year arra gone
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: six and three over sixty nine and two thirds innings.
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: The strikeouts have taken a little step back because last year,
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: you know, he had a thirteen to four K nine.
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: This year, it's more like a ten to six. But
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: everything is pointing to Susaki being posted this offseason, that
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: like he was already kind of making moves and making
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: little kind of hints that he wanted to come over
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: before this season, that there was kind of like some
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: murmurings that like he might be unhappy enough that he
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: might convince his team in the MPB to post him
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: and let him come over to Major League Baseball. It
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: does sound like it's probably gonna happen this offseason. So honestly,
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: like if you're in a fan Treks league that has
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: like just daily moves, he's in your player pool. I
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: can guarantee that I'm in a league that like plays
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: with the full dynasty pool and like you can go
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: pick up Japanese players right now. So certainly keep an
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: eye out for that if you've got him in your
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: dynasty pool right now. But everyone else have to wait
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: for him to sign with a Major league ball club.
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: But I think even with the elbow issuy, you're looking
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: at somebody who's got certainly a higher ceiling than Yoshinobo
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: Yamamoto when he came over this offseason. And I think
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: that the angle that we want to specifically kind of
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: like delve into here is the baseball card angle, because
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: I know you had a lot of success with Yamamoto
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: cards in last offseason, So are you planning to do
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: the same thing with Sasaki's this offseason?
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: Yeah? Absolutely, you're reading right into it here. This is
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: this is you know, Yamamoto, imon Aga, both guys that
- 1:38:38Speaker 2: I found a lot of success with and picking up
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: their cards and then moving them. You know, there's this
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: interesting dynamic with these players coming over from overseas that
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: there's two things. One, just the general baseball fan baseball
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: collector doesn't know too much about them, like they're they're
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: not paying that close attention to who these guys can be. Second,
- 1:39:00Speaker 2: they're not on a team, and so from a you know,
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: a team collector perspective, you know you're not you know,
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: you're more likely to pick up the middle reliever in
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: the bullpen than Roki Sasaki because that's he's not on
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: your team and so you're not going to collect him.
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: So the only folks that are collecting or there's a
- 1:39:20Speaker 2: subset of collectors out there that really like the Japanese market,
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: clearly the Japanese fans, and then there's folks that are
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: kind of prospecting on these guys. But the difference between
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: prospecting on a guy that's coming from overseas, They've already
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: got a repertoire, they've already got a history built, and
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: so when they sign, they are signing as like an
- 1:39:44Speaker 2: all star. And that's what we saw with Yamamoto right
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: when he signed some of his cards and all own
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: like I exploited this to a degree in the card market,
- 1:39:52Speaker 2: like you were selling his base cards or some of
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: his inserts like that. You would see like in the
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: market here in the US of like a fifty cent card,
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: they were going for ten dollars for fifteen dollars because
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: those were the only cards. He doesn't have cards in
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: the top set of things like that. Now there's tops
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: chrome kind of playing in the Japanese market now to
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: a degree. But I do think that there's a lot
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: of potential here. So I've actually been buying rookie Sasaki
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: cards for the last probably nine twelve months, looking forward
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: to next year. Manntaka Murakami is another guy that I
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: see in the same boat, a very very good hitter
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: over in the same league that I believe will likely
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: get posted in this this offseason as well, and so,
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: you know, really a fun guy. You can you know,
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: his rookie cards roughly like a fifty dollars card right now,
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: because there's not a ton of them out there, but
- 1:40:52Speaker 2: you know, I picked up a few of those were
- 1:40:54Speaker 2: maybe thirty dollars they but those are going to go
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: through the roof when he comes over, especially he signs
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: in a big market. It's is absolutely going to go crazy.
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: So yes, I think this is a really fun guy
- 1:41:07Speaker 2: to go after. There's a ton of upside. And to
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: your point, I think all indications say this is the
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: off season that he comes over. So if you get
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: a chance to pick up some of his cards, even
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: just the Commons, it's a worthwhile investment and maybe you're
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: getting lucky and he signs with your team.
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. And I mean I think a couple of
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: other factors that I want to mention too, is obviously,
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: because all of the cards that he's had so far
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: are from Japan, a lot of the time you're gonna
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: have to get these shipped over from those Japanese sellers
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: on eBay. But because of that, like you can get
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: into more of like a bulk situation where you're buying
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: just like multiple of these cards, you know, even dozens
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: to be able to put them together. And then obviously
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: that reduces your overall cost to be able to bring
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: them over per card. And then like you know, if
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: you have the means to be able to buy in
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: that bulk volume, that can certainly help so that you
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: can lower some of those prices. And then I totally
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: agree with you on that, just like signing with a
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: major market team, that there's no way Sasaki signs outside
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: of Robbie La or New York or Chicago, and so
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: like he is going to enter I think a major
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: collecting market, and you should be able to move those
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: cards pretty easily when he signs that contract. And then
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: I mean, I think at that point then obviously we'll
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: have a different conversation on the on the buy sell,
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: but certainly that's the kind of time frame that you're
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: looking for on those cards. And then certainly on the
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: Dynasty League side, like I would say, if you're able
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: to invest you know nearly nothing on him, go ahead
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: and do that while you can, and kind of worry
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: about those issues later and try to kind of maximize
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: that same sort of window in between, because like again,
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: like you know, if you are in a league, a
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: home league, that maybe they aren't paying attention to all
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: the overseas and NPP baseball, just like the baseball cards,
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: they might not have a great sense of who Sasaki is.
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: Yep, absolutely, so bye bye bye wherever you're at.
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: Okay, Well, let's get into a couple of guys that
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: we had on the cell side, and sadly one of
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: those his Yoshinoba Yamamoto from the LA Dodgers, And I
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: guess I should have brought him up when we were
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: talking about Joe Ryan because he had just about the
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: same injury as Joe Ryan, and he last pitched just
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: about two months to the day, so he has been
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: working his way back in the rehab and is getting
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: to moundwork bullpen work still seems a ways a way.
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: I think Yamamoto's injury was a little bit more serious
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: than Ryan's too, so like there's that factor as well.
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: But you know, you're looking at eight to twelve weeks
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: is gonna end up being what you know, Yamamoto is
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: gonna end up being out. I mean, it's already been
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: eight weeks at this point. But certainly he was superb
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: when he threw the tent four innings of two ninety
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: two ball and went six and two this year with
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: eighty four strikeouts versus seventeen walks. But I think the
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: big thing here, I loved Yamamoto coming into the year.
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: I loved all the stuff that he was throwing. I
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: think he had a great profile. But the one concern
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: that was always kind of giving me pause was the
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: size his frame. You know, it's only a five to
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: ten frame. He's five ten, one seventy six. So, uh,
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: he's honestly literally like my size, and uh, I know
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: I cannot be a workhourse of a pitching rotation as
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: well as like that transition from MBB they pitched once
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: a week in in America and MLB you're looking at
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: every five to six days, And obviously I think that's
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: what kind of got to Yamamoto. When you're looking at
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: that shoulder injury and we didn't even start talking about
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: elbow injuries here. That could certainly be happening, and certainly
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: seems to be something happening in LA with you know,
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: I don't know if there's something thing where they're doing
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: a little bit of like a race thing where they're
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: trying to target guys who have indicators for injury and
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: juicing them while they can, or if there is something
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: in the training methods that is causing that pitching to
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: break down. But a lot of those things have me
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: worried about Yamamoto, and I think we're looking at he
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: was one of the hottest rookies for investment this year,
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: and that is really peaked in terms of the card market,
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: and I think in the long term keeper market even
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: though he's twenty five. From a fancy perspective, I'm trying
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: to find the value I can in him right now
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: because I'm just not sure how this holds up over
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: the long term, and I want to try to cash
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: that in while I still can. To some point, what
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: are you doing with Yamamoto in any leagues where you
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: have them, or would you suggest to those Yamamoto owners
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: out there.
- 1:45:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're right, it's the risk might just
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: be more than it's worth. And I think that there's
- 1:45:56Speaker 2: still an opportunity where yam Moto's value, whether it's whether
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: it's fantasy perspective, has maintained a lot better than anybody
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: else that would be in the same situation just because
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: of the hype and the market that he's in. I
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: think there's still this like I invested at him at
- 1:46:14Speaker 2: this extremely high prices. You remember, Yo Mota like was
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: going extremely high in drafts. He was absolutely the top
- 1:46:20Speaker 2: ten pitcher and in most of the places, you know,
- 1:46:23Speaker 2: his cards were going crazy, like and I don't think
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: folks are willing to admit that he might not hold up,
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: and they said, well, it's just this injury, you know.
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: But to your point, like, this is the time to
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: that if this is true and he's not gonna be
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: able to hold up, you can still get pretty good values.
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: Not you not dollar for a dollar, but you're not
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: too far off from like ninety cents on the dollar
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: type of thing from a dynasty perspective and a car perspective,
- 1:46:49Speaker 2: Like you should be really really happy with that. And
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: if you can get that when you paid like out
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: to Wazoo technical term Wazoo, but when you pay you
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: paid that, you've you've got to kind of capitalize on
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: that and look to move on, like reallocate those resources
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: somewhere else. So I'm I'm hesitant Onyamoto. He very much
- 1:47:11Speaker 2: could come back and just be phenomenal. It just has
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: to figure out the health and push push pitching on
- 1:47:16Speaker 2: that new schedule. But I'm for the value you're still getting.
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: I think that the risk that he's missing time and
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: not able to do the workload is more than the
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: value that you're still getting out of his market.
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree, And I think that's a lot
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: of this is kind of like I think, when you're
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: working with a huge starting pitcher like this, it can
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: unravel really fast, and so like, while you can capitalize
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: on that, especially this late in a season, like before
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: your trade deadlines, if you do have people in your
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: keeper leagues who see that value in Yamamoto, like I
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: would certainly entertain it, because like who knows where it goes,
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: and you might as well kind of like I think
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: it'll hurt a lot less if you miss out on
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: you know, this last three weeks to three weeks of
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: Yamamoto and then kind of like let the cards fall
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: where they do in twenty twenty five. That like, especially
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: if you can cash them out for anything on the
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: hitting side, we're getting back to those saves and relievers
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: and closers we're talking about. I think I would be
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: jumping at that chance. Okay, Well, the last guy we
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: have is more of a one that you put in
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: the rundown. So I mean, I'll have you like explain
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: the cell situation here. I can kind of see it
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: and kind of see where you're coming from in terms
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: of especially, I don't know if the peak goes much
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: higher than this year for Cantel Marte second basement for
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: the Arizona Diamondbacks. Little banged up right now with an
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: ankle injury, but it's been a fantastic All Star season
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: for him, as he's hit two ninety eight three sixty nine,
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: five sixty one. That's a one fifty two WRC plus
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: with thirty bombs, eighty one RBIs eighty one runs. And yeah,
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: is there something in the profile that's he that he's
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: been putting up this year that is really kind of
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: giving you pause about Katel Marte going forward into the
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: future for Dynasty and on the same kind of token
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: with cards.
- 1:49:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's it's not so much that there's
- 1:49:17Speaker 2: like a big warning signs. It's more of that he's
- 1:49:22Speaker 2: at the absolute peak of what he can be and
- 1:49:26Speaker 2: he's done this before, and I think is the big
- 1:49:28Speaker 2: thing for me, twenty nineteen, he had like a season
- 1:49:32Speaker 2: that was early similar to this where he launched thirty
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: two homers. He has averag actually a little bit better.
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: She hit a little baby glovely hit two three twenty
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: nine art hit rates of like forty two. Didn't quite
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: hit the century mark there with runs and RBIs, but
- 1:49:47Speaker 2: was right in there ten steals. Like, man, this guy
- 1:49:51Speaker 2: was really good, and he was like a second rounder
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: that next year, and he came back to earth is
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: what it came down to. Well, twenty twenty. I don't
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: know how much you want to put stock at the
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: end of that season, but go to like twenty one
- 1:50:04Speaker 2: and twenty two. He was more of a fifteen homer
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: guy and a five steal guy and still hit for
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: some good average, but like he wasn't that big power
- 1:50:13Speaker 2: hitter that you hoped he was. And he's doing it
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: again and the same things that popped out in twenty
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: nineteen are popping out now, which again he's hitting the
- 1:50:24Speaker 2: ball great. He's he's a great hitter, don't get me wrong,
- 1:50:28Speaker 2: It's just he's not a top few round talent and
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: you're likely going to be regressing next year in to
- 1:50:34Speaker 2: a fifteen to twenty homer guy. Over the last month,
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: his home run for a fly ball rates like forty
- 1:50:39Speaker 2: five percent. It's like one soda, one soda, Aaron Judge
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: and one soda, kind of you know categories here. If
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: you look at some of these same metrics, Aaron Judge
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: looks ridiculous. He looks so scary because he's just like
- 1:50:53Speaker 2: every metric, he's pushed to the outer bounce. But you know,
- 1:50:57Speaker 2: he's also kind of a double like career rate, where
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: the entire season he's basically doubled his home run for
- 1:51:03Speaker 2: a fly ball rate. Again, he's he's hitting a little
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: bit better contact this year, so you're gonna see that.
- 1:51:08Speaker 2: But he's also one of the best seasons he's ever
- 1:51:12Speaker 2: had from a contact perspective. So just a little regression
- 1:51:15Speaker 2: there too, like a good hitter, that those home runs
- 1:51:18Speaker 2: are gonna fall off the table. And so I think
- 1:51:21Speaker 2: that's really what I'm concerned with kenvil Marte here is
- 1:51:23Speaker 2: that he's his numbers are really really good, and he
- 1:51:27Speaker 2: looks really really good, but there's enough like outsized results
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: that he's gonna go higher in drafts next year than
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: he really should be. I think from the card market perspective,
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: he's gonna get that that big boost of of what
- 1:51:43Speaker 2: he you know, he's gonna you could argue, is he's
- 1:51:45Speaker 2: an MVP races. He's probably not quite there, but like
- 1:51:48Speaker 2: you can make that argument, and he's gonna regress next
- 1:51:52Speaker 2: year to a good player, a really good player, even
- 1:51:54Speaker 2: an all star level player, but that's gonna be seen
- 1:51:57Speaker 2: by the card market is falling off a cliff. And
- 1:52:00Speaker 2: in the fantasy world, when you give a second round
- 1:52:03Speaker 2: pick to somebody like this and he performs as a
- 1:52:06Speaker 2: fourth round pick, you're going to be really frustrated. So
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: I'm not saying this is a massive cell, but I
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: don't think his value is ever going to be higher
- 1:52:13Speaker 2: than it is right now. And you can easily see
- 1:52:16Speaker 2: next year that he is roughly half the production that
- 1:52:21Speaker 2: he did this year. So I'm selling kese Ol Marte
- 1:52:24Speaker 2: actually had an opportunity in Dice Toy to acquire him,
- 1:52:27Speaker 2: and I had to back away from it just as
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: I looked at what he's doing and like, you can't
- 1:52:33Speaker 2: bank on that happening again.
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I agree there in terms of like also,
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: like you know, he's going to be going into his
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: thirty one, age thirty one season next year, you're looking
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: at somebody who he's also he's increasing his swing rate,
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: and like that's tough, like in terms of when you're
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: balancing it out with that overall like just more power
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: profile pet. You can see how it can fall off
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: a click cliff real quickly in terms of if you're
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: chasing too much trying to chase that power, that it
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: can disappear on you. In terms of like the cards too,
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: it's never been a big name in the card market.
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: Partly is because right now he's only up to twenty
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: seven career war he's getting into the back half of
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: his career that like you're looking at somebody, I mean,
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: he's not even really going to go into like the
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: Hall of very good that he's going to be a
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: little bit of like one of those I think over
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: time he'll kind of shift into like the sands of
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: the league and kind of be forgotten that, Like it's
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: not a great card investment from that as well as
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: like his I hate that like twenty fifteen set that
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: his rookie card is in with the Mariners. That's another
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: factor is that he's done all the work in his
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: career with the Diamondbacks. His rookie card is with the Mariners.
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: That twenty fifteen set is just gross looking. I don't
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: I've never liked the design of it when you know,
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: it's just kind of got that like weird like cloud
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: gradient on it and stuff, and it's just it never
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: pops really great. And I don't think it's a very
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: well known set. So you've got that factor going in
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: as well as like, I bet if you're in a
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: Dynasty league and you approach the Francisco Lindoran owner with
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: a Catel Marte share, I bet you can get that
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: done and get plus from that Lindor owner. You know,
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: if you're looking for something to really solidify you going
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: into next year, what Marte does is he's keeping you
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: behind in that stolen based department. I think a little
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: bit too much when you're talking about somebody who is
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: at the top end of the draft, you know, to
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: be able to hit for only power and average, like
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: you've got to be up in like the Juan Soto.
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: You know, Aaron Judge tears if you're not going to
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: be running, and even they run a little bit about
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: equal to Marte, So I think he can be a
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: little bit of like somebody that can give you trouble
