• 0:11
Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks, and all the nerds in between.
• 0:13
My name is Megan and I am with vigilante vibes.
• 0:16
And today I'm coming to you with another character breakdown.
• 0:19
And of course, it's another mutant, because that's my thing.
• 0:22
And today I want to talk about James Proud Star.
• 0:25
Last week we talked about his brother Thunderbird, and it's
• 0:29
like, how can you not talk about Warpath when you're talking
• 0:32
about Wonderbird? So who is Warpath?
• 0:35
Who is James proud Star? James first appeared as the
• 0:39
second Thunderbird in New mutants #16 published in June of
• 0:43
1984, and then first appeared as Warpath in X Force Number One in
• 0:48
June of 1991. He was created by Chris
• 0:51
Claremont and Sal Bushima. James proud star was born of the
• 0:55
Apache Reservation in Camp Verde, AZ Growing up, he
• 1:00
absolutely idolized his older brother John, especially after
• 1:04
John returned home from serving in the Marines.
• 1:06
James was thrilled to have him back until their mother revealed
• 1:09
she had cancer. As part of trying to lift
• 1:13
everyone's spirits, the family went to an amusement park where
• 1:16
James had his fortune told by Destiny.
• 1:19
You know, the Destiny Mystique's wife?
• 1:23
He brushed it off, convinced she.
• 1:25
Was a total fake, which I feel like a lot of people do.
• 1:28
Not long after, James secretly followed John when he broke into
• 1:31
Arroyo Labs, a clinic supposedly treating people on the
• 1:35
reservation for cancer. There, James was discovered by
• 1:38
Doctor Edwin Mardinek, who revealed himself to be a mutated
• 1:42
  werewolf. The brothers learned the
• 1:44
horrifying truth. Mardinek was lying about the
• 1:47
cancer diagnosis so he could irradiate patients and study the
• 1:51
effects. They tried to stop him, but
• 1:54
Mardinek managed to escape. Not long after, James secretly
• 1:59
followed John when he broke into a clinic supposedly treating
• 2:02
people on the reservation for cancer.
• 2:04
There, James discovered Doctor Edwin Martinek, who revealed
• 2:08
himself to be a mutated werewolf.
• 2:10
The brothers learned the horrifying truth.
• 2:13
At that point, Martinek was lying about the cancer diagnosis
• 2:17
so he could eradiate the patients and study the effects.
• 2:21
They tried to stop him, but Martinek managed to escape.
• 2:24
Soon after, John was recruited by the X-Men and was killed on
• 2:30
one of their earliest missions. James was devastated and
• 2:33
furious. He blamed the X-Men for John's
• 2:36
death and swore revenge on their founder, Professor Charles
• 2:39
Xavier. Not long after, James own mutant
• 2:42
powers started to surface. Closely resembling his brothers.
• 2:46
He joined the Hellions at the Massachusetts Academy, led by
• 2:50
the White Queen herself, Emma Frost, who personally trained
• 2:53
him to use his powers. James first crossed paths with
• 2:57
the New Mutants when Emma invited Doug Ramsey to the
• 3:00
Academy and ended up capturing both him and Kitty Pride.
• 3:04
Unaware of Kitty's bond with magic, who is Ileana Rasputin,
• 3:08
Emma accidentally kicked off a rescue mission that ended with
• 3:11
both teams captured. With tensions rising, the
• 3:15
Hellions proposed a contest. If the New Mutants won, they
• 3:18
could go free. Chaos broke out when Emma
• 3:21
herself intervened and the New Mutants managed to escape into
• 3:24
the confusion. Later, James wore his brother's
• 3:28
old costume and kidnap Banshee to lure the X-Men to the
• 3:31
Cheyenne Mountain where John had died.
• 3:34
Everything went according to plan until James found he could
• 3:37
not bring himself to kill Professor X Xavier convinced him
• 3:41
that John had died a hero and James let everyone go,
• 3:44
acknowledging Xavier as an honorable man, which like, I
• 3:49
don't agree with, but Xavier offered him a place with the New
• 3:54
Mutants, but John turned it down and instead returned to the
• 3:57
  Hellions, eventually becoming their leader.
• 4:01
During a Hellfire Club event attended by both teams, John
• 4:05
bonded with Danny Moon Star and the two genuinely liked each
• 4:08
other. Things soured after Cypher was
• 4:12
found drunk in bed with Roulette, leading to another
• 4:15
rivalry fueled contest between the teams.
• 4:19
The goal was to track down whoever sold a fake Celine
• 4:22
statue, with the losers forced to publicly apologize.
• 4:27
While the New Mutants tried to get ahead of by spying, James
• 4:30
predicted their move and LED them to decoys.
• 4:33
The Hellions captured the real culprits, Viper and Silver
• 4:37
Samurai, and won. Back at the club, James and
• 4:40
Danny nearly kissed before being interrupted rudely.
• 4:44
Later, James admitted he had feelings for Danny after being
• 4:47
influenced by Empath during another contest involving the
• 4:50
mutant bird Brain. Eventually, James felt like he
• 4:55
didn't belong with the Hellions anymore and he just left,
• 4:58
returning home to Camp Verde. Cable offered him a spot with
• 5:01
the New Mutants, but James declined until he returned home
• 5:04
and found his entire tribe slaughtered with a Hellfire Club
• 5:08
mask left behind. Driven by rage and grief, James
• 5:12
joined Cable's team. Under Cable's leadership, the
• 5:16
New Mutants became X Force and James took the code name
• 5:19
  Warpath. He fought numerous enemies
• 5:22
alongside the team and eventually confronted Emma
• 5:24
Frost, only learned she wasn't responsible for his tribe's
• 5:27
massacre. Around his time, his powers
• 5:30
surged dramatically, granting him incredible speed, strength,
• 5:34
and heightened senses. After sensing danger tied to the
• 5:38
National Council of Indian Affairs, James rushed to New
• 5:42
York where he had a strange encounter with Risque, who
• 5:45
kissed him and vanished just like that.
• 5:49
Later, he tracked Celine to Gideon's apartment but was
• 5:53
defeated by her magic. Risque rescued him, took him to
• 5:56
Florida to recover, and the two fell in love.
• 6:00
When James returned to the X Mansion with her, they walked
• 6:03
straight into a fight with Mr. Sinister and were knocked out
• 6:07
during the chaos. When James woke up, Risque was
• 6:10
gone. Risque later reappeared and took
• 6:14
him out, only for her to drug him and hand him over to the
• 6:17
  Sledge. Though betrayed, James learned
• 6:20
that one tribesman, Michael White Cloud, had survived the
• 6:24
massacre. To repay Sledge, James entered a
• 6:29
dangerous dimension to rescue the Vanisher, barely escaping
• 6:32
himself. This experience forced him to
• 6:35
  rethink his obsession with revenge.
• 6:38
James later met White Cloud, who revealed that the Oreo Institute
• 6:43
files explained the massacre, but before he could name those
• 6:46
responsible, White Cloud was taken out.
• 6:49
James recovered the file, only to be captured by Martinek, who
• 6:53
revealed the massacre was actually a cover up tied to
• 6:56
Strife's experiments. Martinek injected James with a
• 7:00
drug and took killed him in a hell dimension.
• 7:04
Strife tried to break James spirit but sirens, CPR and the
• 7:09
intervention of Valkyrie and X force actually saved him,
• 7:12
bringing James back to life. Danny Moon Star later helped him
• 7:15
process his grief. Under Pete Wisdom James learned
• 7:19
to push his powers even further somehow even learning how to
• 7:23
fly. He stayed with X Force through
• 7:26
multiple missions and fake deaths, including a major
• 7:30
explosion that briefly left the team presumed dead.
• 7:35
Later, James joined the Mumbai branch of the X Corporation,
• 7:39
saving Professor X from assassination and becoming
• 7:42
beloved by the public while wearing his brother's old
• 7:45
costume. After the events of House of M,
• 7:49
James retained his powers and relocated to the Xavier
• 7:52
Institute, where he reconnected with old allies and received
• 7:55
vibranium knives from Storm and Black Panther.
• 7:59
James later joined a midspace mission to hunt down Vulcan,
• 8:02
proving himself in combat and earning Xavier's trust.
• 8:06
Back on Earth, he helped rescue Leach from the Morlock Tunnels
• 8:09
and defended fellow mutants from the Sentinels.
• 8:13
He later became part of a new Black Ops X force led by
• 8:16
  Wolverine. During Messiah Complex, Caliban
• 8:20
  sacrificed himself to save James.
• 8:22
James buried Caliban alongside his brother and later learned
• 8:26
the truth about Eli Bard, resurrecting his tribe as
• 8:29
sacrifices to Celine. During Necrocia, James faced
• 8:34
reanimated loved ones, including his brother, whom he had to
• 8:38
mercy kill. He ultimately defeated Celine
• 8:42
using her own dagger, freeing the trapped souls.
• 8:46
Afterward, James left X Force, lived on Utopia, and later
• 8:50
joined Storm and Psylocke security team.
• 8:52
He was captured by Weapon X, rescued by mutants led by an
• 8:56
older Logan, and later joined their Rescue Squad, developing a
• 9:01
casual relationship with Domino. When Sabertooth took over
• 9:05
leadership, James quit after clashing with him once again.
• 9:09
When Krakowa was founded, James joined the Mutant Nation and
• 9:13
later fought to defend it in Other World.
• 9:16
He eventually became a teacher with the New Mutants, mentoring
• 9:19
young mutants and helping combine their powers and
• 9:22
creative ways. He participated in missions
• 9:25
across the world and even got stuck in his Hellfire Gala
• 9:28
outfit after sneezing. After Scarlett, which restored
• 9:32
Resurrection, John Proudstar was finally brought back to life.
• 9:36
Overwhelmed with emotion, James feared he had failed his
• 9:39
brother, but John did not blame him.
• 9:41
The two embraced, cried and finally went home together to
• 9:44
spend time with her grandmother, Lozen.
• 9:48
So that is Warpath, That is James, proud star.
• 9:54
He is a sad character. He's a sad character, which I
• 9:59
realize. I keep breaking down all these
• 10:01
  sad characters and it's like maybe I have a type, I don't
• 10:04
know. But I like his character.
• 10:06
I love him and John together. I love their dynamic and I like
• 10:10
Warpath. He's cool, he has cool powers,
• 10:13
and I'd really, really like to see more of him in the recent
• 10:16
comics 'cause I just feel like we never get to see him anymore.
• 10:19
So yeah, that's Warpath. That's James Proud star.
