- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody, This is
- 0:24Speaker 1: Peter Schreger. He goes into the season with Peter Schrager.
- 0:27Speaker 1: We're doing this on a Tuesday morning. Very unique weekend
- 0:30Speaker 1: where you had two wildcard rounds on Saturday, two Wildcard
- 0:34Speaker 1: round games on Sunday, and then two Wildcard rounds on Monday.
- 0:38Speaker 1: We're fresh on the air right now on Tuesday morning,
- 0:42Speaker 1: and the Eagles season ended in complete this array. This
- 0:45Speaker 1: was a team that was ten and one at one point,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and they fired their defensive coordinator. Well, let's be honest,
- 0:53Speaker 1: they removed him from play calling duties, which in so
- 0:55Speaker 1: many words means get out of the chair and you're
- 0:58Speaker 1: being removed and replaced. That's a team that all season long,
- 1:04Speaker 1: we had talked about Super Bowl expects, the weight of
- 1:07Speaker 1: those expectations, the local media, all of these things that
- 1:10Speaker 1: were hanging in the in the atmosphere, and yet they
- 1:14Speaker 1: were winning early on and they were resilient early on.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I could tell you on this podcast the amount of
- 1:21Speaker 1: joy that people take fans, some people in the league
- 1:27Speaker 1: of seeing things end this way for that Philly team
- 1:29Speaker 1: is almost unseemly and they're they're not villains individually. I
- 1:34Speaker 1: don't think anyone looks at Jalen Hurts and look at
- 1:36Speaker 1: him as a villain, or anyone looks at the recently
- 1:38Speaker 1: retired Jason Kelsey of the Gavillain. I don't think it
- 1:40Speaker 1: looks at Nick Sirianni is like, I don't like him.
- 1:43Speaker 1: But there's a certain bravado about that Eagles team. And
- 1:47Speaker 1: maybe it does start with Sirianni when he's mean mugging
- 1:50Speaker 1: the cameras during the Giants wild card gay or yeah,
- 1:53Speaker 1: Divisional round game last year, or after the Kansas City
- 1:56Speaker 1: win when he's in the tunnel and he's got some
- 1:59Speaker 1: comments for fans and it was captured on film. Maybe
- 2:02Speaker 1: it's because of Big Dom and you see this big guy,
- 2:04Speaker 1: and you see Ted Rath, who's their athletic trainer, who's
- 2:06Speaker 1: going wild on the sideline. Maybe it's because of the
- 2:09Speaker 1: way everyone responded to their draft, where you know, they
- 2:12Speaker 1: drafted Jalen Carter and they drafted Nolan Smith, and they
- 2:15Speaker 1: got Keelee Ringo and they traded for Andre Swift and
- 2:18Speaker 1: everyone just said, well, the Eagles dominated the draft A
- 2:21Speaker 1: plus everyone else is in second place and beyond, and
- 2:24Speaker 1: then you have a day earlier the Cowboys lows switch.
- 2:27Speaker 1: If you talk about how is it shouting Freud? Shoten Freud,
- 2:30Speaker 1: shot in Freud? If you want to talk about shot
- 2:32Speaker 1: of Freud? How about the Cowboys losing? They were down
- 2:35Speaker 1: twenty seven to nothing against the Packers on Sunday and
- 2:39Speaker 1: you would think it was a party online fans and
- 2:43Speaker 1: Cowboys haters and then media members going just in on it,
- 2:47Speaker 1: and then there's questions of everything there that one goes from, Okay, well,
- 2:52Speaker 1: is Mike McCarthy ever going to get past the division
- 2:54Speaker 1: around let alone the wildcreft? They win twelve games every year,
- 2:58Speaker 1: but they can't win playoff games? Like is this the
- 3:00Speaker 1: guy to coach the team? And then we had a
- 3:02Speaker 1: really good conversation on Good Morning Football. I think it
- 3:04Speaker 1: was pretty rational and sensible. Do you pay Dak Prescott
- 3:08Speaker 1: sixty million dollars because that's going to be the going
- 3:10Speaker 1: rate he's going into the final year of his contract. Traditionally,
- 3:13Speaker 1: quarterbacks get paid before the final year. You don't want
- 3:16Speaker 1: to go into the season as a pure free agent
- 3:18Speaker 1: and have that looming, and Dak has earned it. Every
- 3:22Speaker 1: step of the way this regular season, and then the
- 3:23Speaker 1: playoffs come and for the third straight year, in the
- 3:26Speaker 1: biggest moment, Dak isn't there or doesn't have the game.
- 3:30Speaker 1: And this case, it wasn't just on Dak. This was
- 3:33Speaker 1: a colossal failure and it could go from the defensive
- 3:36Speaker 1: side of the ball to the play calling to Dak
- 3:39Speaker 1: throwing some terrible interceptions in this game that really hurt them.
- 3:44Speaker 1: The Eagles and the Cowboys are out of the playoffs
- 3:48Speaker 1: and we're not even to the divisional round. These are
- 3:50Speaker 1: the two teams we talked about all season long, the
- 3:53Speaker 1: powers of the NFC East. Who's going to take on
- 3:55Speaker 1: the forty nine Ers in the NFC Championship Game? Is
- 3:57Speaker 1: gonna be one of these two teams. They're both out
- 4:00Speaker 1: and instead you have this upstart, really fun, really young
- 4:04Speaker 1: Packers team with a quarterback who looks as good as
- 4:07Speaker 1: anybody in the league and Jordan Love. And then you
- 4:09Speaker 1: got this Buccaneers team that no one thought anything of.
- 4:13Speaker 1: They rebuilt themselves on the fly, Cap hell Brady retires
- 4:17Speaker 1: and they get further than they did last year with
- 4:19Speaker 1: Tom Brady under center. Let you throw in the Lions
- 4:23Speaker 1: as your third other team, and they've got one of
- 4:26Speaker 1: the coolest stories in sports. So I look at both
- 4:30Speaker 1: Dallas and Philadelphia as major, major disappointments. I look at
- 4:34Speaker 1: what we're gonna be talking about over the entire offseason.
- 4:37Speaker 1: They have big decisions to make. Do you bring back
- 4:39Speaker 1: McCarthy that's number one? Two? Do you bring back Sirianni? Three?
- 4:45Speaker 1: Do you bring back dak at sixty million with a
- 4:49Speaker 1: major contract and the press conference and the whole thing,
- 4:52Speaker 1: or do you ride this out a little bit and
- 4:55Speaker 1: then with the eagle side of it, like, what do
- 4:58Speaker 1: we do with that entire situation? Because Kelsey is the
- 5:03Speaker 1: first one to leave, it might be Brandon Graham, it
- 5:05Speaker 1: might be Fletcher. You might have a big roster turnover.
- 5:09Speaker 1: And I'll be honest, Aaron, all those picks that we praised,
- 5:15Speaker 1: Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Nolan Smith, Keelee Ringo, I didn't
- 5:21Speaker 1: see them down the stretch.
- 5:22Speaker 2: They slowed down this season. They started so hot, and yeah,
- 5:27Speaker 2: those rookies like they weren't as big of a contributor
- 5:31Speaker 2: as we got later into the season and then into
- 5:33Speaker 2: the playoffs.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Yeah, But Aaron, I do want to talk about the
- 5:36Speaker 1: Detroit Lions real quick. I feel like we were riding
- 5:38Speaker 1: this train well before everybody else last year. That was
- 5:41Speaker 1: kind of on it as they finished the season strong.
- 5:43Speaker 1: And then over the offseason, we had Brad Holmes on
- 5:47Speaker 1: the podcast the general Manager, and I was like, I
- 5:50Speaker 1: am so into this dude, I am so into his conviction.
- 5:53Speaker 1: He told us his story, which if you guys haven't
- 5:55Speaker 1: heard it, we pumped it to the top of the
- 5:57Speaker 1: feed earlier this week on the podcast. Brad Holmes is
- 6:00Speaker 1: working at Enterprise run a car at the Atlanta Hartsfield Airport.
- 6:04Speaker 1: He then got an opportunity to be a PR intern
- 6:08Speaker 1: with the Atlanta Hawks. Going from the Atlanta Hawks, he
- 6:11Speaker 1: jumped to the Saint Louis Rams to be a PR
- 6:16Speaker 1: entry level job, eventually made the move to the front office,
- 6:19Speaker 1: built up a career in Saint Louis and then Los Angeles,
- 6:23Speaker 1: and then got the job as the Detroit Lions GM
- 6:26Speaker 1: two years ago. Comes in immediately makes a trade for
- 6:29Speaker 1: Jared Goff that everyone thought golf was kind of like
- 6:33Speaker 1: a throw in, but Brad Holmes made a point to say, no, no, no,
- 6:36Speaker 1: you're not a throw in, Like I want you to
- 6:38Speaker 1: be our quarterback because he was with them in Los
- 6:40Speaker 1: Angeles and with them in Saint Louis, and he knew,
- 6:43Speaker 1: you know, he knew. Now, I don't know if Holmes
- 6:46Speaker 1: ever knew it could come to this, but it has.
- 6:49Speaker 1: And you add in the hiring a Dan Campbell, and
- 6:53Speaker 1: then you look at the way that front office has
- 6:55Speaker 1: built itself and kind of, you know, gone about their business.
- 6:58Speaker 1: It's so you know, it is really inside the weeds.
- 7:00Speaker 1: But like we could talk about the football all day long.
- 7:02Speaker 1: It's been great. But Holmes gets there, Campbell gets there.
- 7:08Speaker 1: But they weren't the first two brought in. So Sheila
- 7:11Speaker 1: hamp Ford is the real odor of the managing owner
- 7:15Speaker 1: Scott rod Wood, who is the president of the Lions,
- 7:18Speaker 1: who's been the president Lions for a long time. What
- 7:20Speaker 1: they felt was necessary was to bring in some actual
- 7:26Speaker 1: culture people more so than like we need the hardcore
- 7:29Speaker 1: football person. And no one screamed culture more to them
- 7:33Speaker 1: than Chris Spielman. Now, Spielman does not do media. Spielman
- 7:38Speaker 1: does not get out there and is not out in
- 7:40Speaker 1: the open. But what's crazy is that Chris Spielman, who
- 7:43Speaker 1: might be the greatest Lions linebacker of all time, was
- 7:47Speaker 1: my on air partner for three seasons with the NFL
- 7:51Speaker 1: on Fox. And what's crazy is that Chris is one
- 7:54Speaker 1: of the most eloquent, passionate and best communicators of football,
- 7:58Speaker 1: but they kind of keep him under wraps or he
- 7:59Speaker 1: doesn't buy design and his job is a bit undefined there.
- 8:04Speaker 1: But he's there, and he was very integral in the
- 8:07Speaker 1: hiring of Dan Campbell. And when he got there, it
- 8:13Speaker 1: was him, it was the owner, it was Rodwood, and
- 8:16Speaker 1: then it was a gentleman named Mike Disner. Google Mike
- 8:19Speaker 1: Disner real quick if you want a resume. He's not
- 8:21Speaker 1: a familiar face. He's not a familiar name. But Michael
- 8:25Speaker 1: Disner worked at the league in their management council group
- 8:29Speaker 1: for a while. Then he went to the Patriots and
- 8:31Speaker 1: was super successful there. Then he went to the Arizona Cardinals.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And with the Arizona Cardinals he was number two to
- 8:36Speaker 1: Steve Kim. Now, the Arizona Cardinals don't have forty guys
- 8:41Speaker 1: in their front office. The Arizona Cardinals the couple people, scouts,
- 8:45Speaker 1: salary cap guy, a few different people who work on
- 8:49Speaker 1: the grounds there and like Disney, wore all hats with Arizona.
- 8:52Speaker 1: So while in Arizona. He really rose to the top.
- 8:55Speaker 1: But he's a Michigan guy. He's from I want to
- 8:57Speaker 1: say Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. I might be wrong on the town.
- 9:00Speaker 1: It might be Arbor Hills might be one of those.
- 9:03Speaker 1: And when that Lion's opportunity came about, he jumped and left.
- 9:07Speaker 1: So you now have Disner and Spielman, one of them
- 9:11Speaker 1: who is born and raised Michigan and came back because
- 9:14Speaker 1: it's his hometown team. The other one is a all
- 9:18Speaker 1: time linebacker who had seen the NFL first hand, going
- 9:22Speaker 1: stadium to stadium over the last five years calling NFL
- 9:25Speaker 1: games on Fox. And then you have an owner and
- 9:28Speaker 1: a president who had been there and been through different hires,
- 9:31Speaker 1: that saw what worked and what didn't work. You take
- 9:33Speaker 1: those four, you bring in Brad Holmes as your general manager,
- 9:37Speaker 1: and then you hire Dan Campbell, who, oh, by the way,
- 9:40Speaker 1: there wasn't a long list of teams looking to hire
- 9:43Speaker 1: Dan Campbell, who is the tight ends coach from the
- 9:46Speaker 1: New Orleans Saints. Campbell comes in and he brings in
- 9:49Speaker 1: this cast of characters, a former pros. Look at that
- 9:52Speaker 1: coaching staff. It's Mark Brunel, it's Aaron Glenn. It's one
- 9:58Speaker 1: former player after another, and I think it's a pretty
- 10:02Speaker 1: cool mix of what they've done. You pair that with
- 10:05Speaker 1: one of the best draft classes in all all the
- 10:06Speaker 1: football they got this year, a former number one overall
- 10:09Speaker 1: pick who's been kicked to the curb and discarded in
- 10:11Speaker 1: Jared Goff, and then just tons of late round talent
- 10:14Speaker 1: that have delivered, whether it be Amman, Ross, Saint Brown
- 10:17Speaker 1: or Eli McNeil, all these guys who have been really good.
- 10:20Speaker 1: And oh yeah, they killed it in the free agency
- 10:22Speaker 1: game too. I love the way Detroit was built. I
- 10:25Speaker 1: love the people behind it. I love that they did
- 10:29Speaker 1: it the right way, and I love that these fans
- 10:30Speaker 1: can truly appreciate this moment. If I'm negative on where
- 10:35Speaker 1: the Eagles and Cowboys are and I'm down on them,
- 10:38Speaker 1: I am so high on where the Detroit Lions are.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I felt like they built this from the ground up
- 10:43Speaker 1: and the culture was the most important piece. Kudos to
- 10:47Speaker 1: Lions fans. This is truly an amazing ride and you
- 10:50Speaker 1: deserve every moment of it. Enjoy a second second home
- 10:54Speaker 1: playoff game in the twenty twenty three playoffs. I'd like
- 10:56Speaker 1: to say no one saw it coming.
- 10:58Speaker 2: But Aaron I did when even when Gibbs started the
- 11:03Speaker 2: season slow, you were still on it. You were saying,
- 11:05Speaker 2: patients gives offensive touch at the first round.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Yeah, like the like the first game, and everyone's killing
- 11:11Speaker 1: me on on Twitter, like what I drafted Gibbs in
- 11:13Speaker 1: my face. I think Gibbs finished up one thousand yards
- 11:15Speaker 1: of scrimmage in ten touchdowns. If you took him in
- 11:17Speaker 1: the fantasy draft in the second round, he was well
- 11:19Speaker 1: worth it.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Yeah. I think I got him in like the third
- 11:22Speaker 2: round or something, and I was very upset in the
- 11:24Speaker 2: beginning of the year.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Gibbs, Laporta, Laporta, god Brian Branch, Jack Campbell an inside linebacker. Awesome. Like,
- 11:35Speaker 1: I really like the Lions. They're favored by a lot
- 11:38Speaker 1: of points against the Bucks. They're likely gonna take care
- 11:43Speaker 1: of business. I don't see them falling on their faces,
- 11:45Speaker 1: not now, not the way this thing is riding and rolling.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I do think if if we didn't have Puka this year,
- 11:51Speaker 2: Laporta's year would have felt more momentous because he had
- 11:55Speaker 2: such He broke all the records for a rookie Titans
- 11:57Speaker 2: and everything.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I think he tied Gronk for second
- 12:01Speaker 1: most touchdowns for rookie Titan Number one was Mike Diko.
- 12:04Speaker 1: We should showed that graphic, which is like from nineteen
- 12:06Speaker 1: sixty one. Laporta's story is great. The guy was hurt,
- 12:10Speaker 1: was questionable, doubtful. Then fourth and one, who's scoring the
- 12:12Speaker 1: touchdown in the big playoff game. It's Sam Laporta. I look,
- 12:18Speaker 1: there's the four remaining NFC quarterbacks right now, Jared Goff,
- 12:24Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield, Rock Purty and Jordan Love If I mean,
- 12:29Speaker 1: you can't write this stuff, you can't. You can't write
- 12:31Speaker 1: this stuff all right as we swing from playoffs. I
- 12:35Speaker 1: want to go through sort of the stuff in my
- 12:37Speaker 1: notebook right now, which is a fascinating time in football.
- 12:39Speaker 1: As we're listening, it's we're recording this on a Tuesday morning.
- 12:42Speaker 1: It'll post probably later Tuesday afternoon. Things can change. So
- 12:45Speaker 1: Belichick is now. It's so funny. There was a tweet
- 12:49Speaker 1: last night from the Falcons that said we have interviewed
- 12:52Speaker 1: Bill Belichick for our vacant coaching And I'm like, that
- 12:56Speaker 1: is that how it went down? Or is Belichick interviewing you?
- 12:59Speaker 1: It's almost like it's this celestial being like all right,
- 13:03Speaker 1: I'm picturing Belichick with a resume, like, you know, handing
- 13:06Speaker 1: it to Arthur Blank and Rich McKay and Terry Fontano
- 13:09Speaker 1: and saying like, here's what I've done.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Tell us the time that you had to work from adversity, Bill,
- 13:14Speaker 2: tell us.
- 13:15Speaker 1: A time where you were down three scores or more
- 13:18Speaker 1: in a big moment, and how that affected your team
- 13:20Speaker 1: versus the opponent. Is Belichick gona interview? Elsewhere is Belichick?
- 13:26Speaker 1: Does Belchick have to interview? That one is wild? So
- 13:32Speaker 1: there's been a lot of talk about Dallas like to
- 13:35Speaker 1: empty the notebook, if you will. He's got a really
- 13:37Speaker 1: good relationship with Jerry Jones and Steven Jones because Belichick's
- 13:41Speaker 1: been going to owners meetings for forty years and is
- 13:44Speaker 1: a very engaged individual when it comes to voices in
- 13:49Speaker 1: the league. As far as rules go, committee meetings, all
- 13:51Speaker 1: that stuff. Belichick's very very much involved. I said on
- 13:54Speaker 1: Bill Simmons's podcast last week that I don't think Jerry
- 13:58Speaker 1: would do that to Craft because it's like there is
- 14:01Speaker 1: honor amongst thieves, if you will, and Jerry and Craft
- 14:04Speaker 1: are leader. And then everybody, including people in the league
- 14:07Speaker 1: who heard that, including Bill Simmons who was the co
- 14:09Speaker 1: host or was hosted of that podcast and interview me
- 14:12Speaker 1: was like, it's like, get the hell out of here,
- 14:14Speaker 1: what are you talking about. Jerry Jones wants one thing
- 14:16Speaker 1: and one thing only. He wants to win. And Bill's
- 14:20Speaker 1: ull take was like, rich guys don't care about stuff
- 14:24Speaker 1: like that. Rich guys want the biggest Yeah, they want
- 14:26Speaker 1: the biggest Super Bowl ring, they want all that stuff.
- 14:28Speaker 1: The other part of it is just Jerry's dedication to winning.
- 14:31Speaker 1: So maybe I was a little bit too Pollyanna and
- 14:34Speaker 1: a little too wide, I'd say, and like, I don't
- 14:37Speaker 1: think Jerry would do that to Craft. I don't think
- 14:39Speaker 1: Jerry's gonna pluck off Belichick and then do Yeah, I
- 14:42Speaker 1: was probably wrong on that. We'll see if Jerry gets
- 14:44Speaker 1: rid of McCarthy and if that's the pick. I also
- 14:46Speaker 1: think Vray Bill could be a really good, interesting, just
- 14:49Speaker 1: you know hire in Dallas. So keep an eye on that.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Last night and we're fresh, all the Eagles fans are
- 14:55Speaker 1: tweeting me. Everyone's texting me, could the Eagles get Belichick?
- 14:58Speaker 3: I I don't know, Like that that's a lot and
- 15:02Speaker 3: like that would probably mean there's a Howie Roseman Belichick
- 15:06Speaker 3: deal far as the roster goes, how he is really
- 15:08Speaker 3: good at managing that roster.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I don't know if how he's looking to then have
- 15:12Speaker 1: Belichick in the room as a voice. That would be interesting.
- 15:15Speaker 1: And then you go to any of these vacant jobs
- 15:18Speaker 1: and Belichick's name comes up. But I think the more
- 15:20Speaker 1: interesting thing is that Chargers situation not for Belichick so
- 15:23Speaker 1: much Harbaugh. He interviewed with them all day on Monday.
- 15:28Speaker 1: I'm curious to hear out when. I'm sure I'll hear
- 15:30Speaker 1: from the Chargers folks at some point, or we'll hear
- 15:32Speaker 1: from Belichick's side. But I said when Pete Carroll's was
- 15:36Speaker 1: kind of dismissed or stepped away from Seattle, Pete Carroll
- 15:38Speaker 1: makes the most sense for the Chargers. Pete Carroll is
- 15:41Speaker 1: Southern California. Pete Carroll has one at USC. Pete Carroll
- 15:45Speaker 1: walks in there. You have a local legend, and there's
- 15:47Speaker 1: this great heartwarming So Pee Carroll still wants to coach,
- 15:50Speaker 1: and I think that moves the needle in that market
- 15:54Speaker 1: in Orange County, which where they're gonna be opening a
- 15:56Speaker 1: beautiful new facility, far more than Harbaugh, who although will
- 16:00Speaker 1: bring what he brings and that's a national title and
- 16:02Speaker 1: all that stuff. I don't know if there's that connection
- 16:05Speaker 1: to that market. Either way, both make a lot of sense,
- 16:08Speaker 1: whether it's Harball or Pete Carroll. Pee Carroll has not
- 16:11Speaker 1: been listed as a guy who's interviewing for that job yet.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I also curiously who the GM is there and how
- 16:16Speaker 1: those pieces work, because if Harball comes in, I think
- 16:19Speaker 1: Harball comes in with all his guys on offense, the
- 16:21Speaker 1: Greg Roman types, if he's available to do so, his
- 16:24Speaker 1: front office guys, He's got a whole thing. Harboy comes in.
- 16:27Speaker 1: And now I remember Harball interviewed twice with the Broncos.
- 16:31Speaker 1: He interviewed with the Vikings two years ago when they
- 16:34Speaker 1: gave it to O'Connell. Those were not the right fits.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Is this the right fit? Well, you say, justin Herbert,
- 16:40Speaker 1: of course. And what Harba does is he wins right away.
- 16:43Speaker 1: He did it at the University of San Diego, which
- 16:45Speaker 1: is your real fit there, I guess, even though San
- 16:48Speaker 1: Diego and Los Angeles Chargers are not quite necessarily tied
- 16:51Speaker 1: together in any way, especially since the Chargers moved. He
- 16:56Speaker 1: did it at Stanford, he did it at the forty
- 16:58Speaker 1: nine Ers, of course, and then of course he did
- 17:00Speaker 1: it at the Colts are at at Michigan. I said,
- 17:03Speaker 1: the Colts, that's where he played as a player and
- 17:04Speaker 1: turned them around. Harboaugh to Chargers would make sense, of course,
- 17:11Speaker 1: but I kind of like that Pete Carroll wildcard a
- 17:13Speaker 1: little bit more, and just to see if Pete's going
- 17:15Speaker 1: to go somewhere else, that would be the place other vacancies.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Carolina is currently interviewing GM candidates and they're going to
- 17:23Speaker 1: be meeting with head coaches throughout this thing. They've got
- 17:25Speaker 1: to kind of do the who we hire first deal
- 17:27Speaker 1: head coach or GM. I'm told those interviews are going
- 17:31Speaker 1: on in Carolina as we speak. David Tepper's been funneling
- 17:35Speaker 1: through different general manager candidates and they've been both in
- 17:38Speaker 1: person and on remote and I think it's going to
- 17:41Speaker 1: be interesting to see what the structure of that front
- 17:44Speaker 1: office is. As they fired their general manager, Scott Fitterer,
- 17:47Speaker 1: but Dan Morgan, former University of Miami player, former linebacker,
- 17:52Speaker 1: is still technically employed by the Panthers, and I'm told
- 17:56Speaker 1: Tepper thanks very fondly of the me as a personnel
- 18:00Speaker 1: guy and also as a voice in the building. So
- 18:02Speaker 1: be interesting to see if it's someone comes in and
- 18:04Speaker 1: works with Dan Morgan, someone comes in and it is
- 18:06Speaker 1: their own people, or if it's just Dan Morgan outright.
- 18:09Speaker 1: So that's your Carolina side Atlanta. You heard about Belichick.
- 18:12Speaker 1: They're also interviewing others. Kevin Demoff, the president of the Rams,
- 18:15Speaker 1: made a great case for Raheem Morris last week. Who's
- 18:18Speaker 1: the defensive coordinator of the Rams? On our podcast? I'm
- 18:22Speaker 1: told that made the rounds. If you saw Aaron Jalen
- 18:25Speaker 1: Ramsey tweeted out the clip.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Oh I didn't see that.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Oh nice. London Fletcher tweeted out the clip. Who played
- 18:32Speaker 1: for Raheem in Washington? I believe Aaron not Aaron Donald
- 18:38Speaker 1: Now Andrew Whitworth, oh tweeted out the clip. So you
- 18:42Speaker 1: had your your your people who've played for Raheem come
- 18:45Speaker 1: out and speak, and those are the player's side saying, yeah,
- 18:47Speaker 1: this is the guy. You also have Kyle Shanahan and
- 18:49Speaker 1: Sean McVay and the president of the Rams. I feel
- 18:52Speaker 1: like he deserves a shot. So he's he's being rumored
- 18:55Speaker 1: to go to Atlanta, Tennessee. I believe is a possibility there,
- 19:00Speaker 1: and I think Raheem also is going to interview for
- 19:03Speaker 1: that Chargers job. So we watch our Tennessee is interesting.
- 19:06Speaker 1: It blew out Verbel Coach of the year, the whole thing.
- 19:09Speaker 1: It's like who they bringing in curious to see? As
- 19:11Speaker 1: you know these coaches and these owners, a lot of
- 19:14Speaker 1: times what they do is they'll go from one big
- 19:17Speaker 1: swing to another, they'll go the polar opposite. I remember
- 19:20Speaker 1: the Jets did this twice. It was like they had
- 19:24Speaker 1: Herm Edwards who was full of bluster in the stutehere,
- 19:26Speaker 1: and then like from him, they went to Eric Manngini
- 19:30Speaker 1: who was like not the big personality, was more low key.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Then they went to Rex Ryan who was huge personality,
- 19:36Speaker 1: and then to Todd Bowles who was not and like
- 19:38Speaker 1: was more low key. I think it depends on the building.
- 19:42Speaker 1: But like from what I gather the fit between the
- 19:44Speaker 1: owner that what she envisions with how voices should be heard,
- 19:50Speaker 1: and then what Verbel had going on where it was
- 19:53Speaker 1: kind of like his way there, I think you're gonna
- 19:55Speaker 1: look at a different type of head coach where it
- 19:57Speaker 1: might not be as established a head coach, or it
- 19:59Speaker 1: might be somebody who's a younger head coach in his
- 20:02Speaker 1: first year or somebody who's just willing to, you know,
- 20:04Speaker 1: kind of take an equal shiit with the GM or
- 20:07Speaker 1: an equal share with the owner and not be as
- 20:08Speaker 1: loud a voice in the room or as powerful voice
- 20:11Speaker 1: in the room, or in all these different teams. And
- 20:13Speaker 1: I still think there might be some more like I
- 20:16Speaker 1: don't know about Dallas, I don't know about New Orleans.
- 20:18Speaker 1: I know those guys are still there, but it's okay.
- 20:23Speaker 1: I don't know about Philadelphia. Sirianni's there, but I could
- 20:27Speaker 1: they fired Doug Peterson two years after winning a Super Bowl.
- 20:30Speaker 1: These these coaching hires are not necessarily always done, and
- 20:34Speaker 1: these coaching firings are not always necessly done on the
- 20:36Speaker 1: Monday after a game or the Tuesday after a game.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Sometimes they take some time and there's some conversations. I
- 20:41Speaker 1: will say this, the Patriots pretty seamless on their situation.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I don't know about the way the rules in that
- 20:49Speaker 1: contract were written, but they didn't go through the interview
- 20:52Speaker 1: process at all. They were able to hire Gerd Mayo. Now,
- 20:57Speaker 1: Rod Mayo is a person of color, so it's like
- 20:59Speaker 1: the Rooney rule in itself is kind of satisfied by that.
- 21:01Speaker 1: So you're not going to find anyone raising their hand
- 21:04Speaker 1: about that. But if the point of the accelerator program
- 21:09Speaker 1: that the league does every year bringing in so many
- 21:11Speaker 1: different minority candidates to meet with the owners is to
- 21:14Speaker 1: get a chance to interact and then ultimately get in
- 21:17Speaker 1: the interview rooms, I think it would have been beneficial
- 21:19Speaker 1: for the league and for some other coaches to have
- 21:21Speaker 1: the opportunity to at least interview for the job. That
- 21:25Speaker 1: obviously is not a matter of significance, as they've already
- 21:29Speaker 1: moved on. They have the press conference Wednesday for Jerrodmeo.
- 21:32Speaker 1: But I did say, you know, if, wouldn't that have
- 21:34Speaker 1: been cool for everyone to interview with the crafts or
- 21:37Speaker 1: at the very least get an opportunity to meet another owner.
- 21:39Speaker 1: But it didn't happen.
- 21:40Speaker 2: I mean, you've talked on some of the other interviews,
- 21:42Speaker 2: Like we talked about the importance of Mike McDaniel getting
- 21:44Speaker 2: some of these interviews early on and like testing what
- 21:49Speaker 2: his I hate to say performance, but like what his
- 21:52Speaker 2: performance under pressure of a big head coaching interview would be. Like,
- 21:55Speaker 2: So I totally understand, Like how that's there are a
- 21:59Speaker 2: ton of openings, but that's one less opening that could
- 22:02Speaker 2: be I don't know eight people interviews.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it's more like, okay, the Patriots are in their
- 22:06Speaker 1: right to say, well, we put this on this guy's contract.
- 22:08Speaker 1: He's a person of color. We satisfied the rudy roll,
- 22:11Speaker 1: and like we have to get started, like we know
- 22:13Speaker 1: our guy. Why would we waste anyone's time. From the
- 22:15Speaker 1: big picture, my only thing was like, all right, so
- 22:19Speaker 1: Mike McDaniel said, he got, you know, the opportunity to
- 22:22Speaker 1: interview for jobs, or he wanted to interview for jobs,
- 22:25Speaker 1: like and just a chance to get in that room,
- 22:26Speaker 1: and it helped him immensely. It would have been cool
- 22:29Speaker 1: to maybe have some guys who haven't had the chance
- 22:31Speaker 1: to interview for jobs meet with a team and go
- 22:33Speaker 1: through the process. But again, this is really deep in
- 22:36Speaker 1: the weeds stuff right there. As for this podcast, I
- 22:40Speaker 1: thought there would be no person better to preview Packers
- 22:44Speaker 1: forty nine ers than a guy who is the younger
- 22:46Speaker 1: sibling of one of the head coaches and a disciple
- 22:49Speaker 1: of the others. You can't make this up. Mike Lafleur,
- 22:52Speaker 1: who by the way, is the current offensive coordinator of
- 22:56Speaker 1: the Los Angeles Rams and the guy who helped unleash
- 22:59Speaker 1: Puka Nakua and Kieran Williams and what the Rams did
- 23:03Speaker 1: down the stretch. Is the younger brother of Matt Lafleur,
- 23:06Speaker 1: the head coach of the Green Bay Packers. He is
- 23:08Speaker 1: also a longtime coach under Kyle Shanahan when he was
- 23:13Speaker 1: in San Francisco. Well, who's playing this weekend? Packers forty
- 23:17Speaker 1: nine Ers? I love Mike. I think Mike is a
- 23:20Speaker 1: great young coach in his own right. He went from
- 23:23Speaker 1: the forty nine Ers, came with the Robert Solid of
- 23:25Speaker 1: the Jets, was the Jets offensive coordinator for a couple
- 23:28Speaker 1: of years, gets let go there, and quickly goes to
- 23:31Speaker 1: Los Angeles, where not only does he put a stamp
- 23:34Speaker 1: on what Mike Laflora offense could look like, I think
- 23:36Speaker 1: he shut some people up in the New York area
- 23:39Speaker 1: when they saw what was going on with that Rams
- 23:42Speaker 1: offense this year. Mike's a great dude, and I'm about
- 23:46Speaker 1: to bring him on.
- 23:53Speaker 4: All right.
- 23:54Speaker 1: If you listen to this podcast, you listened to us.
- 23:56Speaker 1: We have the best guests who are coaches, GM's decision
- 23:58Speaker 1: makers and also some of the most relevant ones. I
- 24:02Speaker 1: could not have imagined a more appropriate guess for this week,
- 24:06Speaker 1: either a because of the performance his offense put on
- 24:10Speaker 1: this year in Los Angeles, or be his connection to
- 24:12Speaker 1: the two head coaches of one of the divisional round games.
- 24:16Speaker 1: With no further ado, it's the offensive coordinator of the
- 24:18Speaker 1: Los Angeles Rams, mister, Mike Lafleur. Mike, what's up?
- 24:22Speaker 4: Man? What's up?
- 24:24Speaker 2: Peter?
- 24:24Speaker 4: Appreciate you having me, man.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt. Look, I remember being on the sidelines
- 24:30Speaker 1: at the Super Bowl and it was Chiefs versus forty
- 24:33Speaker 1: nine Ers, and there's a little rope there and your brother,
- 24:37Speaker 1: Matt had either just been hired by Green Bay or
- 24:40Speaker 1: maybe a week earlier, had gotten the job, and he's
- 24:43Speaker 1: sitting behind a rope and he's like, hey, Shreg Shrigg's
- 24:47Speaker 1: And I'm sitting there with the credential because I'm one
- 24:48Speaker 1: of these obnoxious media guys that just walks around like
- 24:50Speaker 1: I belong on the field. And he's like, what's up, dude,
- 24:53Speaker 1: And like you came over to the sideline and there
- 24:55Speaker 1: was this awesome hug before the game because you were
- 24:58Speaker 1: an assistant with the forty nine ers coaching in the
- 25:01Speaker 1: Super Bowl. And there's Matt Lafleur, the recently hired coach
- 25:05Speaker 1: of the Packers. And now it comes full circle where
- 25:09Speaker 1: the forty nine Ers are back in a big game
- 25:11Speaker 1: divisional round and your brother is still the head coach
- 25:14Speaker 1: of the Green Bay Packers. Where are you going to
- 25:16Speaker 1: be for this game? And when you see Laflor versus
- 25:20Speaker 1: forty nine Ers and you have nothing to do with it,
- 25:22Speaker 1: what's your reaction?
- 25:24Speaker 4: It's wild? You know. It seems like the Packers and
- 25:27Speaker 4: Niners have played a lot of games over the last
- 25:28Speaker 4: five years, right, and it was a part of a
- 25:31Speaker 4: lot of those and obviously not anymore. So trying to
- 25:34Speaker 4: figure it all out. We are going to shoot up there,
- 25:36Speaker 4: my wife and I I know my parents are gonna
- 25:39Speaker 4: they're actually they're going to fly over there breeding the
- 25:41Speaker 4: boys are going to fly down here for a night
- 25:43Speaker 4: for whatever reason, okay, and we'll end up shooting. We'll
- 25:46Speaker 4: end up shooting up there on Friday. So trying to
- 25:48Speaker 4: figure all that out. I mean, all this happened so quickly.
- 25:52Speaker 4: We you know, didn't plan on not being a part
- 25:55Speaker 4: of you know, this upcoming weekends game. So we'll figure
- 25:58Speaker 4: it all out. But we'll be up there to sporting
- 26:00Speaker 4: for sure.
- 26:01Speaker 1: We're going to talk that game in a second, But
- 26:02Speaker 1: can we can you humor me a little bit on
- 26:04Speaker 1: just some rams talk as we put a bow on
- 26:06Speaker 1: what was it? Amazing unexpected season that maybe you might say, well,
- 26:09Speaker 1: unexpected to you, but very expected to us. You get
- 26:13Speaker 1: the job after things end in New York, you get
- 26:16Speaker 1: the job in Los Angeles. Mcveigh's texting me like, I
- 26:20Speaker 1: really like this Michael Floor. Obviously he knows your brother
- 26:22Speaker 1: real well and he knows you, and he's like, I
- 26:24Speaker 1: really think things are going to be special. And I'm
- 26:26Speaker 1: kind of rolling my eyes, like, no, I like Mike two,
- 26:28Speaker 1: but with what with what weapons? And then we have
- 26:32Speaker 1: this offensive explosion and I'm gonna mention two guys and
- 26:34Speaker 1: I want you to hit on both of them. When
- 26:36Speaker 1: did you know Puka Nakula was going to have the
- 26:39Speaker 1: greatest rookie season from a wide receiver that we've seen
- 26:41Speaker 1: in years.
- 26:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean to sit here and say that when
- 26:46Speaker 4: we drafted him, and then even as well as he
- 26:48Speaker 4: was doing an ots in training camp to have the
- 26:50Speaker 4: statistical year he had, maybe lying to you, but you
- 26:54Speaker 4: did know early on that one this kid is extremely mature.
- 26:57Speaker 4: Two he's extremely tough. That's that was evident from all
- 27:00Speaker 4: his film obviously at Uyu and he just he fit
- 27:03Speaker 4: into this culture right away. He's a maze and what
- 27:08Speaker 4: a cool resource he had in Cooper Cup to kind
- 27:10Speaker 4: of lean on to get him up the speed. Obviously,
- 27:13Speaker 4: when you have Matthew Staffords your quarterback, you know, you
- 27:16Speaker 4: want to be in the right spot at the right time.
- 27:18Speaker 4: And he understood that and that's part of his maturity.
- 27:21Speaker 4: So he he stood out right away. OTAs stood out
- 27:25Speaker 4: when he put the pads on, probably even more so
- 27:26Speaker 4: once we got the training camp, and you know, it
- 27:29Speaker 4: happened right away. He had a great game against Seattle.
- 27:31Speaker 4: He ended up having twenty targets in Week two versus
- 27:33Speaker 4: the Niners, which was crazy cut catching fifteen of them,
- 27:36Speaker 4: you know, and he just kind of and it never stopped.
- 27:39Speaker 4: And you know, he's he's a dude you root for too,
- 27:42Speaker 4: because he's just such a likable guy and when he
- 27:45Speaker 4: puts those pads on, he plays the game the right way.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Yeah, we talk about that rookie wall all the time,
- 27:50Speaker 1: like it felt like it never came for Nikua and
- 27:53Speaker 1: he saved his best for last. He had the most
- 27:55Speaker 1: yards for a rookie receiver in a playoff game in
- 27:58Speaker 1: the history of the sport on Sunday night, and he
- 28:01Speaker 1: did it on ten targets, nine catches, And it's like
- 28:04Speaker 1: everyone who's watching at home was watching them all like, yeah,
- 28:07Speaker 1: that that's kind of what we expect from him. Was
- 28:09Speaker 1: the game plan going in, Let's feed Pooka and let's
- 28:11Speaker 1: get him the rock.
- 28:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, obviously, you know, it's our job to
- 28:15Speaker 4: make sure that the best players are touching the ball.
- 28:17Speaker 4: But but what's what's when our offense is running at
- 28:20Speaker 4: its best, It's not about trying to force anyone the ball.
- 28:23Speaker 4: You had you at the coverage, dictate where that ball goes.
- 28:26Speaker 4: And you know, Matthew does as good as anyone of
- 28:28Speaker 4: spreading that ball around, reading the plays out, true, you know,
- 28:32Speaker 4: And I think that's why you saw a lot of
- 28:33Speaker 4: our guys, you know, particularly that back half of the
- 28:35Speaker 4: season with the Marcus and Higbee making his plays like
- 28:38Speaker 4: he always has here obviously, Kyen, both in the run
- 28:41Speaker 4: and the past game. Cooper is always going to be Cooper,
- 28:43Speaker 4: you know.
- 28:44Speaker 5: So to to to two had a big, big play,
- 28:48Speaker 5: and TO two was making plays earlier in the year
- 28:50Speaker 5: and and you know continue to so that's when our
- 28:54Speaker 5: offense is doing the best.
- 28:54Speaker 4: But again, the best players are going to find a
- 28:57Speaker 4: way to touch the ball, and he did.
- 29:00Speaker 1: And yet you know, in the moments, it's like if
- 29:02Speaker 1: you had told me in August that Ronnie Rivers was
- 29:05Speaker 1: going to be getting key play in this huge play.
- 29:07Speaker 1: All these guys stepped up. I really was impressed with
- 29:09Speaker 1: the way the offense played.
- 29:11Speaker 4: Yeah, no, it's it's just a credit to those guys.
- 29:14Speaker 4: And again, it all, it all starts with number nine.
- 29:17Speaker 4: He is I heard a lot of good things about
- 29:19Speaker 4: him when I came in, and it was almost undersold
- 29:22Speaker 4: from people in Detroit obviously, how Sean felt about him.
- 29:26Speaker 4: Incredible player, incredible quarterback. He's not going anywhere. I won't
- 29:29Speaker 4: let him go anywhere for I mean, he's got too
- 29:31Speaker 4: much good years ahead of him. But he's even a
- 29:34Speaker 4: better person to work with. He is just phenomenal and
- 29:37Speaker 4: he's receptive. And you know, you wake up and join
- 29:41Speaker 4: going to work every day because the a the building
- 29:43Speaker 4: is incredible. But be at that quarterback is just a
- 29:46Speaker 4: He's a joy to work with.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Talk about his toughness for a second, Are you serious
- 29:50Speaker 1: We're talking about an NFL in twenty twenty three, where
- 29:53Speaker 1: you know, some people say that the rules have changed
- 29:55Speaker 1: and that there's you know, the guys aren't as tough
- 29:58Speaker 1: as they were. Harry Stafford on Sunday Night Football, getting
- 30:01Speaker 1: stepped on, getting knocked getting you know, his hand is
- 30:04Speaker 1: completely severed. There's just out there slinging just right back
- 30:08Speaker 1: up and keeps going. I thought, I thought you a loss.
- 30:11Speaker 1: It was the most heroic performance that we've seen in
- 30:14Speaker 1: recent Memoryes. He was awesome.
- 30:16Speaker 4: Yeah, he's that's what he is. I mean, he's you know,
- 30:19Speaker 4: he's going to get knocked down. He's he's not uh,
- 30:21Speaker 4: he's not Lamar out there running away from you know,
- 30:23Speaker 4: the big guys chasing him in there. But he's going
- 30:25Speaker 4: to stand in there with the best of them, and
- 30:28Speaker 4: he's going to keep getting up, you know. And and
- 30:29Speaker 4: that's just evident. That's not just this year. Uh, he's
- 30:32Speaker 4: not just all of a sudden just gotten tough. That
- 30:34Speaker 4: that dates back to his rookie year, right, And I
- 30:37Speaker 4: believe it was his rookie year against the man. And
- 30:43Speaker 4: so it's just it's not fake, right, And it never
- 30:46Speaker 4: gets old watching that. And yeah, it's it's a prerequisite
- 30:50Speaker 4: to uh to be tough and be a you know,
- 30:53Speaker 4: a quarterback in this league. It's that's just part of it.
- 30:55Speaker 4: But he just takes that to another level, a level
- 30:57Speaker 4: that it's in my opinion, unmatched.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Yeah, and then he had the running back hire and
- 31:01Speaker 1: I'm just gonna hit on him because we've hit the
- 31:03Speaker 1: other names. And obviously the offensive line all stepped up
- 31:05Speaker 1: this year, but Kyed Williams, I think the stat was
- 31:09Speaker 1: he had the third most rushing yards, like in the
- 31:12Speaker 1: history of the sport for a guy who's missed five games.
- 31:15Speaker 1: There was some wild stat about just how good he
- 31:17Speaker 1: was this season historically and before the year. I don't
- 31:20Speaker 1: know if anyone drafted him in their fantasy football.
- 31:22Speaker 4: League right now, He's just another guy that again, he
- 31:28Speaker 4: got cut short a little a year ago, right he
- 31:30Speaker 4: was battling some injuries and stuff like that. He is
- 31:32Speaker 4: a guy that I know less. And Sean pinpointed that, hey,
- 31:35Speaker 4: this is a ram you know when they took him
- 31:37Speaker 4: in the draft in terms of his toughness, in terms
- 31:39Speaker 4: of his maturity. So he kind of fits in that
- 31:41Speaker 4: same bold I was saying of Puka, where he just
- 31:44Speaker 4: comes to work and he's ready to work every single day,
- 31:47Speaker 4: and so what he does on Sunday really isn't that
- 31:50Speaker 4: big dust because that's what he does Wednesday through Friday
- 31:52Speaker 4: when he's out on that practice field. He's just showing
- 31:54Speaker 4: up every single day. He's such an enjoyable guy to
- 31:57Speaker 4: be around. He's a guy that, again kind of like Matthew,
- 31:59Speaker 4: you want to do your best for him as a coach,
- 32:02Speaker 4: you know, And you know, he had a magical run
- 32:05Speaker 4: this year, and I think that's his standard. I think
- 32:08Speaker 4: that's I know, that's how he's gonna approach it, you know,
- 32:11Speaker 4: moving forward, I.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Think the Rams aren't a very good place. I've you know,
- 32:14Speaker 1: I had Kevin Demo off the team president on last
- 32:16Speaker 1: week because he was talking about the Jared Goff trade
- 32:18Speaker 1: and the Stafford trade and going through it all, and
- 32:21Speaker 1: he went through some of those defensive names and then
- 32:23Speaker 1: the offensive players, and I just love the way the
- 32:26Speaker 1: story went this year. You guys, you know, kind of
- 32:28Speaker 1: written off by a run before this season, and by
- 32:30Speaker 1: the end of the year, I think you guys were
- 32:31Speaker 1: one of the top five to six teams in the league.
- 32:33Speaker 1: And if things go a different way, if you make
- 32:34Speaker 1: one more play, if you get one call, that goes differently,
- 32:37Speaker 1: probably still playing today and the team that nobody wants
- 32:39Speaker 1: to face. I would just say congratulations to you as
- 32:40Speaker 1: a first year coordinator with this team taking that offense
- 32:43Speaker 1: to new heights. It's really awesome, dude.
- 32:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I appreciate it. Didn't didn't plan on being you know,
- 32:50Speaker 4: in my house right here on a Tuesday. Was hoping
- 32:52Speaker 4: to keep this thing going. Like you just said, I mean,
- 32:55Speaker 4: it's credit to Detroit. That was what a great game
- 32:57Speaker 4: that was, and it was it was, and it was
- 33:01Speaker 4: an incredible atmosphere. Had a lot of you know, all
- 33:03Speaker 4: my family basically still lives in Michigan, so we had
- 33:06Speaker 4: a lot of a lot of Rams fans there that
- 33:08Speaker 4: you know, just had to make the drive over from
- 33:10Speaker 4: Grand Rapids and Kilma Zoo. But you know, hey, when
- 33:13Speaker 4: you when you don't score touchdowns in the red zone,
- 33:16Speaker 4: that kind of was the story. We were oll for
- 33:17Speaker 4: three in the red zone. We were we were fourth
- 33:19Speaker 4: in the league going into you know, the playoffs, But
- 33:22Speaker 4: none of that stuff matters if you don't get it
- 33:23Speaker 4: done on that on that day. And I thought our
- 33:25Speaker 4: guys played great, They played tough, they they were in
- 33:28Speaker 4: the fight all day, and you know they made one
- 33:30Speaker 4: more play than we did.
- 33:31Speaker 1: You know me, I'm watching it and Stafford's thrown for
- 33:33Speaker 1: three sixty two and Nikua has got nine cat and
- 33:36Speaker 1: they had that red zone shot to Cup and I'm
- 33:38Speaker 1: like that that's nine out of ten times Stafford to Cup.
- 33:41Speaker 1: That's that's usually. And I know it's killing you. I'm
- 33:43Speaker 1: sure it's killing you, and I'm just watching on my couch,
- 33:46Speaker 1: but I'm like, that's how close this game was. It
- 33:48Speaker 1: was the razor's edge. And I don't want you to
- 33:51Speaker 1: spend all off season thinking about what could have been.
- 33:52Speaker 1: I want you to a releast appreciate how great you
- 33:54Speaker 1: guys had had it going on because you guys were
- 33:56Speaker 1: dialed in.
- 33:58Speaker 4: It's a it's a fresh wound right now, so we'll see,
- 34:00Speaker 4: you know, well, we'll see.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Limit to me to bring it up, so we all
- 34:06Speaker 1: talk about that twenty thirteen Washington staff, which included your
- 34:09Speaker 1: brother and McVeigh and McDaniel. But like, I look at
- 34:13Speaker 1: that twenty nineteen forty nine Ers staff and I'm like,
- 34:17Speaker 1: you want to talk about today's coaches and all those guys.
- 34:20Speaker 1: Can you go through some of the colleagues you had
- 34:21Speaker 1: on that twenty nineteen forty nine or Super Bowl team
- 34:24Speaker 1: that was just in the coaching staff alone, because you
- 34:26Speaker 1: look around the league, it's everyone doing huge things right now.
- 34:29Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it was a really cool staff. Kyle, you know,
- 34:33Speaker 4: gets a ton of credit and credit deserve for being
- 34:36Speaker 4: just so good schematically right, getting guys open, getting his guys,
- 34:41Speaker 4: getting his best players of the ball with space. But
- 34:45Speaker 4: the thing that I think he does best is he
- 34:47Speaker 4: has an eye for coaching talent and just obviously player talent.
- 34:52Speaker 4: He's incredible at it. He knows what he wants from
- 34:54Speaker 4: both sides. And you know, we were the same staff
- 34:58Speaker 4: in nineteen basically outside of Caseric, who we brought into nineteen,
- 35:01Speaker 4: who was a huge, huge, you know, reason why that
- 35:04Speaker 4: D line does what it does. But eighteen we were
- 35:07Speaker 4: coaching the senior ball, you know, and uh and didn't
- 35:10Speaker 4: have the year that we wanted. It was still all
- 35:12Speaker 4: the same coaches, and credit to John Lynch and Kyle
- 35:15Speaker 4: for for you know, just being great leaders and keeping
- 35:18Speaker 4: us on the right path. Obviously, you know you had
- 35:20Speaker 4: Mike McDaniel, who's doing great things. I just said, Case Saric,
- 35:24Speaker 4: who's who's arguably the best in the business at at
- 35:27Speaker 4: d line, uh Salah, who is you know, an incredible
- 35:30Speaker 4: defensive coach uh and and great friend. You know, Bobby
- 35:34Speaker 4: Slowick was a was a QC on defense for the
- 35:38Speaker 4: first two years. Kyle said, I don't want to waste
- 35:40Speaker 4: him on defense. Let's bring him over at offense. He's
- 35:42Speaker 4: got too good of a brain to be wasted on
- 35:44Speaker 4: the defensive side. Uh So he stolen from Sala who
- 35:47Speaker 4: didn't love that, and brought him over. What about Demiko Ryans?
- 35:50Speaker 4: You know, he's just an incredible incredible again, you know,
- 35:56Speaker 4: he's an incredible coach, but he's even a better person
- 35:58Speaker 4: and leader. And not surprised, seriously, not surprised at all
- 36:02Speaker 4: what he's doing. It just was a matter of time.
- 36:04Speaker 4: And what a cool fit for him to go back
- 36:06Speaker 4: to Houston. I would say that's probably the fairy tale,
- 36:10Speaker 4: you know, for him to be back there. Just a
- 36:13Speaker 4: lot of really really good good coaches, but better better
- 36:17Speaker 4: humans for sure.
- 36:18Speaker 1: I love it all Right, So this week you're kind
- 36:21Speaker 1: of torn. You've got your brother, You've got your former
- 36:24Speaker 1: you know colleague. Obviously, I would imagine your heart lives
- 36:27Speaker 1: with with Blood and you're going with Green Bay on
- 36:29Speaker 1: this one, but their relationship, having watched it from a
- 36:33Speaker 1: from a close vantage point, I think it's so interesting.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Obviously they've had already huge battles in the playoffs in
- 36:38Speaker 1: regular season, and of course Kyle's got the best of
- 36:41Speaker 1: Matt sometimes Matt's gotten the best of Kyle sometimes. The
- 36:44Speaker 1: dynamic between Matt Lafleura and Kyle Shanahan from little brother
- 36:48Speaker 1: and ex colleague, what what's your vantage point on it?
- 36:53Speaker 4: Disrespect? You know, I think they have so much respect
- 36:58Speaker 4: for each other. They obviously, you know, worked you know
- 37:02Speaker 4: for quite a few years together, starting in Houston when
- 37:05Speaker 4: Kyle was a very very young offensive coordinator and obviously
- 37:08Speaker 4: really good already, and then then for him to bring
- 37:10Speaker 4: him to Washington. They had the one year where you know,
- 37:13Speaker 4: they all got let go in thirteen, as we all know,
- 37:15Speaker 4: and then fourteen they separated for a year. Kyle went
- 37:18Speaker 4: to Cleveland, that's where I met up with them, and
- 37:21Speaker 4: Matt went to Notre Dame and then able to have
- 37:23Speaker 4: the two years in Atlanta together and what a what
- 37:26Speaker 4: an incredible two years that was in fifteen and sixteen.
- 37:28Speaker 4: Obviously didn't finish that when the way we wanted, but
- 37:31Speaker 4: again Nonetheless, they're both both incredible coaches. They're both incredible people,
- 37:37Speaker 4: very different people, you know, So it's it's gonna be
- 37:41Speaker 4: it's gonna be a fun one up there. No one
- 37:42Speaker 4: expected Green Bay to be where they're at. Everyone expected
- 37:44Speaker 4: San Francisco to be where they're at for obvious reasons.
- 37:47Speaker 4: And you know, I think they're both playing their best
- 37:49Speaker 4: ball at the right time, and it's gonna be fun.
- 37:52Speaker 1: You've had a chance to watch from Afar Jordan Love's
- 37:55Speaker 1: maturation and development this year. Obviously, your brother's been living
- 37:58Speaker 1: with it for years, having them on the bench with
- 38:00Speaker 1: Rogers there and then finding a way to get some
- 38:02Speaker 1: time to devote to Love. I think right now, now
- 38:05Speaker 1: that Stafford's been eliminated, now that Dak's been out of here,
- 38:08Speaker 1: I could argue that no quarterback in the NFC is
- 38:10Speaker 1: playing better than Jordan Love right now. You've had a
- 38:12Speaker 1: chance to watch him afar, obviously, but you're you're in
- 38:14Speaker 1: those conversations Jordan Love as you look at him as
- 38:17Speaker 1: an opposing coach, what's your take on his development, how
- 38:20Speaker 1: far he's come?
- 38:22Speaker 4: He just he he looks like he just not looks
- 38:25Speaker 4: he has this great command out there you can just
- 38:28Speaker 4: tell it's the game has slowed down for him so much,
- 38:31Speaker 4: and that's a that's a fun spot to be as
- 38:33Speaker 4: a player and let alone a quarterback, you know. And
- 38:36Speaker 4: so you've been able to see it not just from
- 38:38Speaker 4: week one to now, but but really kind of somewhere
- 38:41Speaker 4: in that mid, you know, middle part of the year.
- 38:43Speaker 4: It felt like it started when we played him in
- 38:45Speaker 4: early November, right before our bye week, where you could
- 38:48Speaker 4: just you could feel that it just was starting to
- 38:50Speaker 4: look right. And then I know, when we were on
- 38:52Speaker 4: the by I was able to watch the Green Bay
- 38:55Speaker 4: Steelers game, you know, live because you don't get to
- 38:58Speaker 4: see many games live obviously because you're preparing for your
- 39:00Speaker 4: own and they didn't win, but it looked right on offense.
- 39:05Speaker 1: And see that's your saying, because everyone circled that game
- 39:07Speaker 1: and was like that's the end of the steel the
- 39:09Speaker 1: end of the Packers season, Like they lost to the Steelers,
- 39:11Speaker 1: it's over. And yet you saw it and you're like,
- 39:12Speaker 1: wait a second, I see something here.
- 39:15Speaker 4: It looked right. It looked right from you could tell
- 39:18Speaker 4: Matt was calling it in an aggressive way, and usually
- 39:22Speaker 4: when the play callers being aggressive, it's because he has
- 39:24Speaker 4: so much trust in all his players, but more importantly
- 39:27Speaker 4: his quarterback. And I think that's probably the biggest thing
- 39:30Speaker 4: if you asked him, is Matt trusts him because Jordan's
- 39:34Speaker 4: playing that way and he's playing aggressive, he's playing smart,
- 39:37Speaker 4: and it's been it's been cool to watch. And I know,
- 39:40Speaker 4: I know, and Bat's been on record. I don't know Jordan.
- 39:42Speaker 4: I've talked to him probably once, but he's I know,
- 39:45Speaker 4: Matt really roots for the human he's but he really
- 39:49Speaker 4: likes the guy, you know, and and the teammates really
- 39:51Speaker 4: like the guy. And so that's what's that's what's really
- 39:54Speaker 4: been cool to see from Afar.
- 39:56Speaker 1: It's really neat that whole story of the Packers. They
- 39:58Speaker 1: are so young. So here we have all these established team.
- 40:01Speaker 1: Packers are the youngest team to ever win a playoff game.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Your brother takes a whole different crew of guys on
- 40:07Speaker 1: offense and overnight almost package them together, and here we are.
- 40:11Speaker 1: They're sizzling. When you were talking to Matt over the summer,
- 40:14Speaker 1: did you think he had an idea that there was
- 40:15Speaker 1: a shot that Dontavian Wicks and Jayden Reed would be
- 40:18Speaker 1: leaving them to the divisional round.
- 40:20Speaker 4: I'll be honest, it seems like every week there's new
- 40:22Speaker 4: guys out there.
- 40:23Speaker 1: I don't even know where some of them, like Bo
- 40:24Speaker 1: Melton showed up in week seventeen and is now like
- 40:26Speaker 1: a go to guy.
- 40:28Speaker 4: Right, And whoever's out there, it's just working, you know.
- 40:31Speaker 4: And that's kind of what I mean, where it just
- 40:34Speaker 4: it just looks right, you know. It looks like just
- 40:38Speaker 4: a well constructed, well orchestrated and again that you know,
- 40:41Speaker 4: a lot of credit to Matt and the coach is
- 40:43Speaker 4: no doubt, but quarterback is in command out there, and
- 40:47Speaker 4: he's comfortable and everyone else is found suit really really
- 40:49Speaker 4: cool to watch.
- 40:50Speaker 1: I say with great confidence that I believe, and you
- 40:53Speaker 1: don't have to be bashful. I believe you'll be a
- 40:54Speaker 1: head coach in the NFL at some point, you know.
- 40:56Speaker 1: And if it's not getting interviews this year or getting
- 40:58Speaker 1: a job this year, it will happen for you because
- 41:00Speaker 1: you're already respected as one of the best offensive minds
- 41:03Speaker 1: in the game. And that'll happen. When you look at
- 41:07Speaker 1: Sean and you look at your brother and you look
- 41:09Speaker 1: at Kyle at everyone always says, well, they run like
- 41:13Speaker 1: the Shanahan offense or whatever it is. There are different
- 41:16Speaker 1: intricacies between the three though, right, and you you could
- 41:20Speaker 1: spot them out. You can identify, like, here's what this
- 41:22Speaker 1: one does better than the other. Here's what makes this
- 41:24Speaker 1: one unique from this one. You've had a chance to
- 41:26Speaker 1: obviously be with those guys for many, many years in
- 41:28Speaker 1: conversations both in the building and I'm sure you know,
- 41:32Speaker 1: at a dinner table or at a bar or wherever
- 41:34Speaker 1: you guys are hanging in the off season.
- 41:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it's uh, you could say that the
- 41:39Speaker 4: nuts and bolts of the offenses are are you know, similar,
- 41:42Speaker 4: you know in some aspects, but they all go within
- 41:44Speaker 4: their own personality, you know. And we could talk for
- 41:49Speaker 4: three hours about this, but I loved it.
- 41:51Speaker 1: I would honestly, to be honest, Mike, I'd like to
- 41:53Speaker 1: write a book on this. Like I feel like this
- 41:54Speaker 1: is like the coolest stuff going in football right now.
- 41:56Speaker 1: And seeing the three offenses this year was really neat.
- 41:59Speaker 4: Yeah. And then and then throw you know, McDaniel in
- 42:02Speaker 4: there in Miami and and here here's what I'll say that,
- 42:05Speaker 4: you know, I feel like, let's just say those four
- 42:07Speaker 4: teams is uh, it's fit to the players, you know,
- 42:11Speaker 4: whatever your player's skill sets are. That's that's where the
- 42:15Speaker 4: offense ends up going and starting with the quarterback, but
- 42:19Speaker 4: also the skill around it, you know, so because we
- 42:22Speaker 4: can all run this system or whatever the system is,
- 42:24Speaker 4: but if it doesn't fit with the players that you got,
- 42:28Speaker 4: then doesn't really matter, you know. And so we fit
- 42:31Speaker 4: ours in a way where we're going to use Kooka's
- 42:33Speaker 4: big body as as a fullback sometimes and Cooper's you know,
- 42:38Speaker 4: toughness and smarts as a fullback sometimes back there because
- 42:41Speaker 4: that's really what they are at times, which opens up
- 42:44Speaker 4: the run game, which opens up the play pass and
- 42:46Speaker 4: all that. So again, that's probably a conversation for another day,
- 42:51Speaker 4: you know, maybe maybe somewhere here in La on the
- 42:53Speaker 4: beach or something, we can get together for a few
- 42:55Speaker 4: hours and talk about it.
- 42:58Speaker 1: Kyle as as like the coach who has spawned the
- 43:02Speaker 1: you know, with you and with McDaniel and of course
- 43:05Speaker 1: with your older brother. Has Kyle's offense changed over the years?
- 43:09Speaker 1: Do you see it as you study that forty nine
- 43:10Speaker 1: ers tape saying like, well, this is a different offense
- 43:13Speaker 1: than the one that I was coaching a couple of
- 43:14Speaker 1: years ago.
- 43:15Speaker 4: Yeah, ass, it's it's evolved, and you know, I think
- 43:19Speaker 4: with with a guy like Christian, you know, McCaffrey, they're
- 43:21Speaker 4: doing a lot of things where you know, they're not
- 43:24Speaker 4: inempty but they're they're inempty because of where Christian lines
- 43:27Speaker 4: up with Sean and I call it he's in Jumanji
- 43:30Speaker 4: out there like he's not on the ball, but he's
- 43:32Speaker 4: like outside the cores five yards off, you know, and
- 43:36Speaker 4: it's like, what what is? You know, something's going on
- 43:40Speaker 4: over there, and maybe he's a decoy, maybe he's not,
- 43:42Speaker 4: you know, And that's a guy that again that in
- 43:45Speaker 4: twenty seventeen when we went to the Stanford Pro day,
- 43:48Speaker 4: Kyle loved him. We all loved him obviously, and uh,
- 43:52Speaker 4: you know it was we had to I won't even
- 43:54Speaker 4: get into the draft and all that all unfolded, but
- 43:56Speaker 4: he ended up in the long run getting them. He
- 43:58Speaker 4: got there and and he got there, you know, and
- 44:00Speaker 4: he probably got there at the right time, and you know,
- 44:02Speaker 4: so it's, uh, it's it's unique to watch, but yeah,
- 44:06Speaker 4: that Kyle's always evolved in and the defenses have evolved
- 44:11Speaker 4: so much since the play past days of twenty fifteen
- 44:14Speaker 4: and sixteen with Atlanta and even early when we first
- 44:17Speaker 4: got to San Francisco. People are letting you get over
- 44:20Speaker 4: top as much anymore. And so now let's exploit in
- 44:22Speaker 4: the intermediate levels of the defense. And you know, I
- 44:25Speaker 4: like to feel that we we do it as well
- 44:27Speaker 4: as anyone, you know, our kind of group of coaches.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Yeah, what is the what is the off season like
- 44:33Speaker 1: tape for you? Is it you study NFL? Do you
- 44:35Speaker 1: study college? Are you one of these guys that will
- 44:37Speaker 1: go into a hole and just start learning everything around
- 44:40Speaker 1: the league, or are you more Here's what we do,
- 44:42Speaker 1: here's how we have to get better, here's our personal
- 44:43Speaker 1: I'm always fascinating because you talk to these coaches and
- 44:46Speaker 1: a lot of you guys on the offensive side of
- 44:47Speaker 1: the ball, it's hey, did you see what Eastern Kentucky
- 44:50Speaker 1: did this year? Or did you see what they do
- 44:52Speaker 1: out in Boise State? You know, it's it's interesting and
- 44:55Speaker 1: I know that some people curate that stuff online, but
- 44:57Speaker 1: we as fans and me and the media like I
- 45:00Speaker 1: don't necessarily have that same nose for it as the
- 45:03Speaker 1: coaching set world does what do you do over the
- 45:05Speaker 1: off season better and hone your skills?
- 45:08Speaker 4: Yeah, unfortunately, the off season is here, you know, and
- 45:11Speaker 4: it was you know, last year getting here, because again
- 45:14Speaker 4: it's not the offense we ran in New York or
- 45:17Speaker 4: it's not San Francis. I had to learn this system,
- 45:20Speaker 4: you know, and what the intricacies of this one is.
- 45:22Speaker 4: And so there was less study in last year on
- 45:25Speaker 4: other teams. It was more, Okay, what do we got
- 45:28Speaker 4: and you know, here's what we did, and let's let's
- 45:30Speaker 4: mold it to the two thirteen rams for two twenty
- 45:33Speaker 4: three rams, excuse me. And so that's what we did.
- 45:36Speaker 4: And now this year you get to you get to
- 45:38Speaker 4: go out again and hey, we got this system. Okay,
- 45:41Speaker 4: now what can we incorporate? What's the trends and flows
- 45:44Speaker 4: of the league and the defenses and stuff like that
- 45:46Speaker 4: if we hadn't picked up on it from just our
- 45:48Speaker 4: weekly game plan. And so that'll be fun, you know,
- 45:51Speaker 4: as far as like the colleges and stuff like that.
- 45:54Speaker 4: You study so many of these guys coming out of
- 45:56Speaker 4: the draft that you inevitably are watching their skins too,
- 45:59Speaker 4: and some of them you did. I mean, you're like,
- 46:01Speaker 4: what is going on here? You know, And it's it's unique.
- 46:04Speaker 4: It's cool. It's a whole different game, the college game.
- 46:06Speaker 4: A lot of respect for what they're doing it, but
- 46:08Speaker 4: it's it's like foreign it doesn't even feel like the
- 46:11Speaker 4: same game half the time. But that's where that's where
- 46:13Speaker 4: I know me personally. That's where you you know, if
- 46:16Speaker 4: there's something schematically that someone's doing, I'm not watching eighteen
- 46:19Speaker 4: per se, I'm watching the players. And then he that's
- 46:21Speaker 4: kind of cool and we'll fit. I don't know, you know,
- 46:24Speaker 4: you just kind of use your own brain there and
- 46:27Speaker 4: you go from there. But that's kind of the process
- 46:29Speaker 4: of what will happen up until when the players get back.
- 46:32Speaker 1: You know, my relationship with McVeigh, I'm not in the
- 46:35Speaker 1: building every day, but we're just friends and we've been
- 46:38Speaker 1: friends for years and I respect his coaching ability. What
- 46:41Speaker 1: did you learn from Sean McVeigh? What did you see
- 46:43Speaker 1: this year? Working for him so much?
- 46:48Speaker 4: He is you know, he's asked me, He goes, did
- 46:51Speaker 4: you expect it to be like this? And I don't
- 46:53Speaker 4: know what I expect. I just expected to come into
- 46:55Speaker 4: a place where you're going to work with really good
- 46:58Speaker 4: people and starting from the top. Our ownership, they're awesome.
- 47:03Speaker 4: That the La Rams building is so cool because it's
- 47:06Speaker 4: it's just ball. It's ball and good people you know,
- 47:09Speaker 4: and it was it was extremely refreshing. It's so fun
- 47:13Speaker 4: to go to work every day because of because of
- 47:15Speaker 4: that building and lesson Sean. He Sean is is demanding.
- 47:21Speaker 4: He gets the most out of these guys. You know,
- 47:24Speaker 4: he's extremely urgent. Like I've told him. Our walkthroughs are
- 47:29Speaker 4: the first walkthrough as a part of in Phase two
- 47:31Speaker 4: back in April or May whenever, it was, I go,
- 47:33Speaker 4: that's the best walk through I've ever been a part
- 47:34Speaker 4: of the first one, and it just was because and
- 47:39Speaker 4: it's the players didn't know any better. That's just what
- 47:42Speaker 4: they do here, you know. And that's the culture he
- 47:44Speaker 4: set up and and there's there's never any issues, you know.
- 47:48Speaker 4: So he's got he's got full command of this thing.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Uh.
- 47:52Speaker 4: He's such a great leader, he's such a great person.
- 47:55Speaker 4: It's obviously a good extent nose coach, no doubt. But
- 47:57Speaker 4: there's so much more that goes into it that people
- 48:00Speaker 4: don't see in terms of, you know, obviously the leadership
- 48:02Speaker 4: and the relationships he has with these guys, you know,
- 48:05Speaker 4: and it's it's it was really cool. I don't know
- 48:08Speaker 4: what happened here in the past, obviously, I just know
- 48:09Speaker 4: they want a lot of football games. Yeah, but but
- 48:12Speaker 4: I know he's having a lot of fun and that's, uh,
- 48:15Speaker 4: that's cool. That's really cool for for for me, and
- 48:17Speaker 4: I think all the other coaches watch him have fun
- 48:19Speaker 4: and really enjoying this thing.
- 48:21Speaker 1: What'd you learn from Kyle? What was your big takeaway
- 48:23Speaker 1: from Kyle when you say I'm going to take this
- 48:25Speaker 1: on too all my next jobs, Like, what do you think,
- 48:27Speaker 1: Kyle Shanahan, What's what's the big the big give me
- 48:29Speaker 1: that I'm gonna bring that with you.
- 48:30Speaker 4: Yeah, it's kind of in that same mold of like
- 48:33Speaker 4: this league doesn't wait for you. You know, you better
- 48:36Speaker 4: be urgent, you know, and and everything you do from
- 48:38Speaker 4: a coaching and player perspective, and because there's there's thirty
- 48:43Speaker 4: two teams and you know, everyone knows what that end
- 48:46Speaker 4: goal is. He doesn't overly talk about winning or going
- 48:48Speaker 4: to Super Bowls or any of that stuff. It's just
- 48:51Speaker 4: what do we got to do today to be better?
- 48:54Speaker 4: And the way they practice up there, the physicality that
- 48:58Speaker 4: they bring on a daily basis that that comes to
- 49:01Speaker 4: fruition on Sundays, you know, but it's not just you
- 49:04Speaker 4: know once in a while, it's it's just how they
- 49:06Speaker 4: do things up there, so fun of respect for him
- 49:08Speaker 4: is again I know I'm kind of broken record with
- 49:11Speaker 4: saying it, but he's an incredible.
- 49:13Speaker 1: These are two of the top offensive minds in the
- 49:16Speaker 1: history of the sport, like, and you've worked for both
- 49:18Speaker 1: of them as their right hand men. Like, I think
- 49:20Speaker 1: that's a pretty cool gig for you. And I think
- 49:23Speaker 1: it's really interesting to get your insights because you have
- 49:24Speaker 1: a different vantage point than us on the outside. Whoor
- 49:27Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, look at this play they drew up.
- 49:29Speaker 4: Yeah, no, it's the plays are They're cool. But everyone
- 49:32Speaker 4: can draw a cool place. I mean, my daughter's over here, guys,
- 49:37Speaker 4: Like it's kind of good. Got it from mad you know,
- 49:40Speaker 4: it's let's implement it, you know, and usually it will
- 49:42Speaker 4: work with Matthew, Stafford and Hook and Cooper, but it's there.
- 49:46Speaker 4: There's so much more to this thing and and you know,
- 49:49Speaker 4: and like you said, Kyle, Kyle does it at a
- 49:51Speaker 4: level that's that's awesome. And you know, love him like
- 49:54Speaker 4: a brother, you know, so he's Uh, I owe a
- 49:58Speaker 4: lot to him.
- 49:59Speaker 1: I've got two more on like other coaches, and I
- 50:01Speaker 1: think you have to understand on this podcast, it's a
- 50:03Speaker 1: lot of coaches who listen. So anytime we get insights on,
- 50:06Speaker 1: you know, the dynamics between then we love it when
- 50:09Speaker 1: when you and Mike McDaniel are both coming up with
- 50:11Speaker 1: the forty nine ers. Obviously there was the past game coordinator,
- 50:14Speaker 1: there's a run game coordinator, there was different titles. He
- 50:16Speaker 1: gets the job in Miami, did you envision him, you know,
- 50:21Speaker 1: doing all this razzle dazzle and the motion stuff. And
- 50:23Speaker 1: I guess now two years in, would you say you're
- 50:26Speaker 1: super exciting for what he's become and what he's got
- 50:28Speaker 1: his offense doing.
- 50:30Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, And it's like he looks so comfortable
- 50:34Speaker 4: in his role too. You know, I don't watch any
- 50:36Speaker 4: of the hard knocks and stuff like that. I heard
- 50:38Speaker 4: it's pretty pretty entertaining. And and but but the one
- 50:42Speaker 4: thing that keeps coming out of from those players in
- 50:44Speaker 4: Miami that that are open about is he is who
- 50:47Speaker 4: he is. He's not trying to be someone he's not.
- 50:49Speaker 4: He's going to be the same personality every single day. Obviously,
- 50:52Speaker 4: he has done some incredible things on offense there, you know,
- 50:57Speaker 4: and it's it's not surprising he puts a lot of
- 50:59Speaker 4: time into it almost probably you know too, much time
- 51:02Speaker 4: when you know what time he wakes up in the
- 51:04Speaker 4: morning and stuff like that. But he he's a he's
- 51:07Speaker 4: a ball guy and he loves it. And I know
- 51:09Speaker 4: the players they got us back there too.
- 51:11Speaker 1: Did you think his personality would work as a head coach?
- 51:14Speaker 1: And the big knock and hear the question was, how
- 51:16Speaker 1: is you know? He's just like really curious thinker. He's
- 51:19Speaker 1: got this long drawn out of it and yet the
- 51:20Speaker 1: players absolutely love him. But I remember coming up they
- 51:22Speaker 1: were like, I don't know if the players are going
- 51:23Speaker 1: to be able to connect with Mike McDaniel. I would say,
- 51:25Speaker 1: I don't know. If that's the case, I think he
- 51:26Speaker 1: actually might connect with them better because he's himself and
- 51:28Speaker 1: he's authentic.
- 51:30Speaker 4: He's authentic. That's the exact word I was going to use.
- 51:32Speaker 4: He's he's true to himself. And I mean leaders come
- 51:35Speaker 4: in all shapes and sizes, right, and as long as
- 51:38Speaker 4: you are who you are, you're true to yourself. You're
- 51:41Speaker 4: not some you're not trying to be someone that you're not.
- 51:43Speaker 4: Players see that. They can see through BS. I mean
- 51:46Speaker 4: they're professionals. They can see through BS at an elite level,
- 51:49Speaker 4: you know, and I know Mike just goes in there
- 51:51Speaker 4: and his main goal is He's very smart, obviously, but
- 51:53Speaker 4: his his main goal is to maximize these players. And
- 51:57Speaker 4: if if the players feel that and know that, which
- 51:59Speaker 4: they do, they'll they'll play for you, you know, they'll
- 52:02Speaker 4: play hard for you, and they'll and they'll respect you,
- 52:04Speaker 4: and you know, so that's it's been cool to watch
- 52:06Speaker 4: because Mike hasn't changed. It's the same guy he was,
- 52:09Speaker 4: as you know, a receiver coach in Cleveland and when
- 52:12Speaker 4: I first met him, when he was in Houston. Obviously
- 52:14Speaker 4: he's just gotten a little bit older. And you know,
- 52:17Speaker 4: it's not surprising at all.
- 52:19Speaker 1: And there's most of your former player having twenty one
- 52:22Speaker 1: touchdowns as a Miami Dolphin, and you're like, yeah, I
- 52:24Speaker 1: could see that totally.
- 52:26Speaker 4: You know, it's what a what a cool story for him. Gosh,
- 52:31Speaker 4: you know, cut five six times, I don't know. And
- 52:34Speaker 4: then twenty eighteen, he obviously at the back end of
- 52:37Speaker 4: the twenty nineteen year, on our way to the Super Bowl,
- 52:40Speaker 4: he statistically I think was the top you know, I
- 52:43Speaker 4: mean it seemed like he was averaging about one hundred
- 52:45Speaker 4: and twenty a game. But even in eighteen he had
- 52:47Speaker 4: some games where, you know, I remember going up to
- 52:50Speaker 4: Lamba when he played really well there and it was
- 52:52Speaker 4: just putting it kind of all together. And there he
- 52:55Speaker 4: was in nineteen doing that. And you know, obviously him
- 52:58Speaker 4: and Mike have a really really close relationship, unique relationship,
- 53:01Speaker 4: and it's been cool to watch him, you know, over
- 53:03Speaker 4: there do his thing.
- 53:04Speaker 1: I had Sala on the podcast last season and he
- 53:07Speaker 1: told a great story about him and Matt were roommates together,
- 53:11Speaker 1: but they were living in like a one bedroom and
- 53:13Speaker 1: they were eating you know, Domino's pizza every night, or
- 53:16Speaker 1: might have been whatever, Little Caesars, whatever, the Detroit style
- 53:19Speaker 1: delivered whatever's in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, where Central Michigan was,
- 53:24Speaker 1: and that like for warm, hot meals. They would come
- 53:27Speaker 1: over your house and like you would like you and
- 53:29Speaker 1: your I guess it was your wife or a girlfriend
- 53:32Speaker 1: a time, I don't know. You guys would cook them
- 53:33Speaker 1: meals and be like I got you even though you're
- 53:35Speaker 1: the younger sibling. I know how tight you are with
- 53:37Speaker 1: Sala as well. What was it like working with Robert
- 53:40Speaker 1: and for Jets Vans listening? Obviously you're now with the Rams,
- 53:43Speaker 1: but like if they were wondering, like, well, what do
- 53:45Speaker 1: we gotten a head coach? What would you say about Salah?
- 53:49Speaker 4: Extremely extremely smart? Like it like he finds a way.
- 53:54Speaker 4: And yes, they would come over when we were in
- 53:56Speaker 4: high school. It was my girlfriend at the time obviously
- 53:58Speaker 4: my wife now, and yes they would take over the
- 54:02Speaker 4: TV and it just was like, can you guys just
- 54:05Speaker 4: get out of here so we can just do our thing.
- 54:07Speaker 4: But anyway, that's for another time as well. But he
- 54:11Speaker 4: is the thing that solid does so well, is uh
- 54:14Speaker 4: he he can he makes things very simple for I
- 54:17Speaker 4: think the players, like it's you could tell you know,
- 54:21Speaker 4: his thought process and then he makes it where it's
- 54:23Speaker 4: extremely easy for the players to understand exactly what what
- 54:27Speaker 4: what he's asking from them, and not just from a
- 54:29Speaker 4: defensive perspective, but from a team perspective. His team meetings
- 54:33Speaker 4: or are awesome. I know, the players love it, the
- 54:36Speaker 4: stories that he gives and how he ties it all together,
- 54:39Speaker 4: uh with with you know, whatever week we're playing, and
- 54:42Speaker 4: the players that that he has. So there's a lot
- 54:45Speaker 4: of factors that go into what's going on right now.
- 54:47Speaker 4: I won't even you know, won't get into all of them,
- 54:49Speaker 4: but a lot of respect for for Robert and uh,
- 54:52Speaker 4: you know, as long as they're not playing the rams,
- 54:55Speaker 4: you know, I wish them all the best.
- 54:57Speaker 1: Obviously, that's cool and that's mature of you. Obviously. All right,
- 55:00Speaker 1: real real quick, you yourself. So your older brother is
- 55:04Speaker 1: in coaching, you're in coaching. What was the floor household
- 55:07Speaker 1: like as kids? And was this like your destiny? Like
- 55:10Speaker 1: I don't even know it was? Your pop's a coach?
- 55:12Speaker 1: Like how did it come to be? It's so cool
- 55:14Speaker 1: that two siblings from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Is that where
- 55:17Speaker 1: you guys grew up?
- 55:18Speaker 4: Were we grew up in maltplus you grew up.
- 55:19Speaker 1: In Mount Pleasant proper? Okay? So Mount Pleasant, Michigan? How
- 55:23Speaker 1: did this happen? And it was like, were you like
- 55:25Speaker 1: football in a crib type deal? Or is this you
- 55:27Speaker 1: guys who both independently loved it?
- 55:30Speaker 4: Yeah? You know, everyone in our family as coaches, starting
- 55:34Speaker 4: with my grandpa. He was a high school head coach
- 55:37Speaker 4: at mostly a school down in KILMAZOOKELMA was and Lloye RKS,
- 55:41Speaker 4: but he was a head coach at other places as well.
- 55:44Speaker 4: And so my mom obviously grew up just in and
- 55:46Speaker 4: around football, and then when she went to Central Michigan,
- 55:49Speaker 4: my dad was there playing and obviously started dating and
- 55:52Speaker 4: got married, you know, and Da da da, and then
- 55:54Speaker 4: my dad, once he got done playing, ended up coaching
- 55:57Speaker 4: at Central Michigan for twenty some odd years, and so
- 56:00Speaker 4: that's what we grew up doing. You know. I got
- 56:03Speaker 4: asked because we were going into fort Field, how many
- 56:05Speaker 4: Detroit Lions games went to I went to zero growing
- 56:07Speaker 4: up because my dad was coaching at Central, and so
- 56:10Speaker 4: we didn't know anything better than Saturdays and MAC football.
- 56:14Speaker 4: That was before MAC was played on Monday through Friday.
- 56:16Speaker 4: It was Saturday one o'clock games.
- 56:19Speaker 1: Like Dan Lefever, Like, who are we talking about? Like
- 56:21Speaker 1: I go back before.
- 56:23Speaker 4: That, it's even before that, long.
- 56:25Speaker 1: Before JJ Watt. We're talking yeah, oh.
- 56:28Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, this is uh gosh, I couldn't even give
- 56:31Speaker 4: you some of the names, but Brian Prewitt and Joe
- 56:34Speaker 4: Youngblood and uh, I mean, Matt would actually probably be
- 56:38Speaker 4: the one better because my dad got let go when
- 56:40Speaker 4: I was in fifth grade, but in which my brother
- 56:43Speaker 4: was a senior, so he had all eighteen years, you
- 56:46Speaker 4: could say, of being there on the sidelines with my dad.
- 56:50Speaker 4: Just football, chip AWAF football, you know, and that's who
- 56:55Speaker 4: is your favorite team? Michigan, Michigan now Central Michigan.
- 56:57Speaker 1: Yeah, that was it.
- 56:58Speaker 4: That was the only team, you know, and uh so,
- 57:02Speaker 4: you know, and then when he got like, oh, he
- 57:03Speaker 4: ended up being the high school head coach for a
- 57:05Speaker 4: few years and then an assistant and stuff like that.
- 57:07Speaker 4: So never had a move. Matt and I grew up
- 57:10Speaker 4: in the same house.
- 57:11Speaker 1: What a blessing, right as you and Matt have jumped
- 57:13Speaker 1: from place to place just pursuing a career, which is
- 57:15Speaker 1: all noble and it's been great. What a cool deal
- 57:18Speaker 1: that you guys grew up in the same town in
- 57:20Speaker 1: a coaching life. It's unheard of.
- 57:21Speaker 4: Same house, same town, you know, So you had the
- 57:25Speaker 4: same friends and you know, like we were just saying,
- 57:28Speaker 4: I met my wife at you know, in Mount Pleasant.
- 57:31Speaker 4: We started dating in junior high and had a little
- 57:35Speaker 4: hicc up there in around eighth grade or something like that,
- 57:37Speaker 4: but got back together in early high school and eighth.
- 57:39Speaker 1: Grade dance was intense though, like a lot of things happened.
- 57:42Speaker 1: There's a lot of drama. There's the other Yes, I
- 57:44Speaker 1: get it.
- 57:44Speaker 4: Dude, I had to figure some things out, obviously. But
- 57:47Speaker 4: they started dating again in high school and ended up
- 57:50Speaker 4: going to college together and got married and dah da dah.
- 57:52Speaker 4: You know. So her dad actually played at Central Michigan
- 57:56Speaker 4: when my dad, she was there, you know, absolutely, Yeah,
- 58:00Speaker 4: he was a receiver back in the day when they
- 58:02Speaker 4: put their hand in the dirt there in the seventies
- 58:04Speaker 4: and eighties. So yeah, it was Yeah, it was really
- 58:07Speaker 4: cool though. We got to be in that same house.
- 58:09Speaker 4: And ironically, Matt finally moved them out of there a
- 58:12Speaker 4: year ago. And you know, they're they're obviously retired there
- 58:16Speaker 4: and you're supposed to go south, and he moved them
- 58:19Speaker 4: to Green Bay just to have some built in babysitters. Yeah,
- 58:21Speaker 4: don't let them tell you no.
- 58:22Speaker 1: No, That's exactly why I get it, dude. I was
- 58:25Speaker 1: thinking you were going to say to Naples, Florida, or
- 58:27Speaker 1: to Palm Springs. No, green Bay, You're coming here. You're
- 58:30Speaker 1: gonna help out.
- 58:32Speaker 4: Like I'm going I'm supposed to go see the grandparents,
- 58:34Speaker 4: but I'm not going to Green Bay to go say, like,
- 58:37Speaker 4: you guys want to come out here, come out here.
- 58:38Speaker 4: This is a vacation, all right.
- 58:41Speaker 1: And then you get through college and it's like it's
- 58:43Speaker 1: a no brainer, or did you have you know, I
- 58:45Speaker 1: know everyone's got like, well, at first I was doing
- 58:47Speaker 1: pharmaceutical sales sometimes like did you take other lanes or
- 58:50Speaker 1: was it coaching from the go?
- 58:52Speaker 4: You know? So Matt always we both knew we were
- 58:56Speaker 4: going to be coaches, obviously, And if you ask Matt
- 58:59Speaker 4: you know today, and I'd say the same thing, like
- 59:02Speaker 4: He's like, man, if I could ever just be the
- 59:04Speaker 4: quarterback coach at Central Michigan, like I've made it, you know,
- 59:07Speaker 4: Like what a cool gig that would be. And so
- 59:09Speaker 4: that we I mean, there was no aspirations of anything
- 59:12Speaker 4: other than just trying to be the best you can
- 59:14Speaker 4: be and wherever you land out, make it the best
- 59:16Speaker 4: you can. And when I got to college, I went
- 59:19Speaker 4: to a Division III school in Chicago called Elmhurst and
- 59:23Speaker 4: it was not state tuition, and my parents were teachers,
- 59:25Speaker 4: and so they made that very known and they said, hey,
- 59:28Speaker 4: if you're going to go to this school, why don't
- 59:29Speaker 4: you like go into business or something or economics. I'm like, yeah,
- 59:33Speaker 4: you know what, maybe I will pursue that. And I
- 59:36Speaker 4: got through about the first two months of those classes
- 59:38Speaker 4: and I called my mom. I said, I can't do that.
- 59:42Speaker 4: This is not for me. I'm not smart enough to
- 59:44Speaker 4: be doing these things. So and she goes I was
- 59:47Speaker 4: waiting for the call.
- 59:49Speaker 1: Shot.
- 59:51Speaker 4: I gave it a shot, and I went to change
- 59:54Speaker 4: it to education. And knowing that, you know, I'll get
- 59:57Speaker 4: my education degree and try to land on as a
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: grad assistant somewhere. I guess when I, you know, got
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: out and never even g eight and I got right
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: to Division two squad. I hadn't even graduated yet, and
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: I got offered a job at a Division two school
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: and a little place in Indiana and that it's called
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: Saint Joseph's College. Don't look it off because it doesn't
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: even exist.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: And it really shut down for real.
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: It's not just the football program, not this is a
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: costure of Raheem and the whole school just just gone.
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: And unfortunately, I had some someboddies that were still coaching
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: every time, and you know, they all landed on their
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: feet and all that. But so we're there for three years.
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: That was the first three years. And I don't want
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: to say the most fun three years, but it was
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: really fun.
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: Isn't that?
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Isn't that amazing? You say it's fun, you're making no money.
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: I mean, you're working there, and it's like Saint Joseph's College,
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: and yet here you are, you were the offensive coordinator
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: of the New York Jets and the Los Angeles Rans.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: We're like, that's my pure joy was just coaching football,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: you know it was.
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: And still have incredible relationships with a lot of those guys.
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: You know, still text with them, you know all the time.
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: You get a lot of text of those guys on
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: Sundays and stuff like that. One of the guys we
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: that that's currently on the New York Jets staff, Billy
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: vander Murky's QC there. He's just needs an opportunity to
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: get a position job because he'll kill it. He was.
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: He was our quarterback there at Saint Joe and he'll
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: he'll tell you threw ten touchdowns in the game. I
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: think it's I think it's still a D two retired
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: the record that, yeah, it was. It was pretty And
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: the funny part about it was, I won't go too far,
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: but he, uh, the week before he didn't play very well,
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: and I was, in my mind, I was right a bench.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: It was done. Philly. It's happened.
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: He was done. He had he had this one last
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: op and he made the most of that up.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: I love that all right, and then your first NFL
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: gig was where the Browns in fourteen? Who gave you
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: that call? Kyle gave you that call? Or it was
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: from from who Mike Petton had it all work together
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: when he ended up in Cleveland.
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: Yeah, it was my brother calling me. I was down
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: at Davidson and we were just we just finished signing dates,
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: so you're like you could kind of breathe, you know,
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: and we were kind of just Loren and I were
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: just kind of planning our next couple of months, like,
- 1:02:12Speaker 4: all right, we know our weekends are somewhat free, there's
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: no more recruiting and stuff like that. And then I
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: got a call it like ten o'clock on a Sunday night,
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: saying that I was going to Cleveland. I didn't really
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: had no choice to go to You're going to Cleveland,
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: I thought, I go, and I thought Matt was talking
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: about himself. I go, So I thought you were going
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: to Notre Dame. He goes, No, You're going to Cleveland,
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: I said, when he goes tomorrow morning. So I packed
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: up my stuff trove from Charlotte to Cleveland and that
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: was that. And then saw Kyle in the office and
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: there we were and that.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: Was it, and that's it's so crazy. So you go
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: up there to Cleveland, it's that wild year where Kyle
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: was there, and it's Johnny Manzel at quarterback and it's
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: Brian hohere I want to say, was the other qb? Right,
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: you guys start off like six and three, it's the
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: talk of the town and then it goes kind of
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: off the rails. But an opportunity to get in there
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: at that junior level, What would be your advice to
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: somebody who's starting off an entry level job in the
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: NFL as far as like soaking it all in And
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: you were coming from Davidson, which wasn't exactly Notre Dame
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: Ohio State, but you'd had some coaching experience. A lot
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: of these young men and women come in straight off,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: you know, not having any experience at the college game.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: What would be our advice to them kind of getting
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: in the NFL building.
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, obviously, be who you are, Be true
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: to yourself, don't you know. You got to do your
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: job at the best of your ability. All cliche stuff,
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: no doubt, you know. But the other thing is like
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: kind of know your role too, Like keep your mouth
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: shut a little bit too, when you know, like it's
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: you all got great ideas. I'm sure kai annoyed Kyle
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: talking too much about what we were doing in college.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: Would you would you be that way? Would you be like, hey,
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: look what we did at Davidson, Let me show you
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: this pot.
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: No. No, I probably did one or two times, and
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: he probably looks back at that. But I don't know.
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: But you know, it's it is. It's hard to get
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: your foot in the door, no doubt, you know. And
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: when you do, you just obviously, like you do anything
- 1:04:03Speaker 4: else in life, you go attack it and you be
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: the best you can be, and you know, stay in
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: your lane and went afficable and then go from there.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: All right, we're gonna wrap, but before we do, I
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: just want to thank you. I think you're an awesome
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: coach in your own right. And then now you've got this,
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: this opportunity to go watch your brother play, Kyle. I
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: think they've faced in the playoffs three times so far, right,
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: I mean, you guys beat them twice back to back years,
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: and then they went up to Lambeau and beat the Niners,
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: beat the Packers. So this is one of those games.
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: Where this is this this will be the third because
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: we beat him twice in nineteen in the regular season.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: Then then beat him in the playoffs.
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: And then and then in twenty one, after the first
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: year in the Jets, we ended up going out to
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: Lambeau and that was that was Nike.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: That's why Kyle, Kyle has Trent Williams running in motion
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: like he's a wide receiver and they beat they beat
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: the Packers. As you look at this one, this is
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: the first time where Matt's the big underdog and it's
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: it's always been that. It's always been Rogers coming in
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: and you look at this game, like your brother, you
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: gotta be so proud of what he's done with this group.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: As you know, they've won fourteen games and regular seasons
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: and he's been awesome and won all these games. But like,
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: this has been a really cool season for your older brother.
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: It's been it's been really fun. It's uh, and I
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: know he is. I don't know if he's having the
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: most fun he's ever had, but it sure seems like he's,
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: you know, just absolutely loving going into work every day
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: with these guys, these coaches, and like we were saying,
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: I mean, it's a lot of guys stuffing up. They
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: don't even know any better, right, I mean, these all
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: these guys that haven't played in these big games, they're
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: just out doing their thing right now. And what a
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: credit to these players. And again, what what Jordan's done.
- 1:05:48Speaker 4: It's it's been really fun to watch from afar.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: Is there a vacation after the season where the families
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: get together and maybe you invite Sala, maybe you invite Kyle,
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: maybe Sean mcveaghat's an invite this year? Like what's the
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: hang session in the downtime and who is the crew?
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: Yeah? It's uh, last year, you know, last year was
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: wild with everything going on, but ended up we had
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: a really fun one. We had to the Bahamas with
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: Raheem and Nikki kids who are who are the same
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: age as uh, you know, my kids. And then obviously
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: Matt and Breather two kids were down there, so we
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: ended up doing that. That was awesome. We always kind
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: of get together, Sean, Sean's gonna have a little.
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: Bit of different, Yeah, a little in the mix.
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: I said, get used to get used to your house, buddy,
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: because you're not gonna be leaving there as much, you know.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: Funny McVeigh and Veronica used to go to Cabo right
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: after this season and they would go to like the
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: the mal Dives, or they'd go to the French riviera.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: I'm like, you've got a five month old, nobody enjoy
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: Enjoy being at home my friend, and go go find
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: to me on Netflix.
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: I think it's going to be more like Santa Barbara Trips,
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: which again love that, but let's not act like this
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: is a you know, this is a pretty cool place
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: down here. So yeah, we'll end up getting somewhere, you
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: know right now, it's we'll get there next week, and
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: you know, at least it's so it's up at Levi's
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: post Lamba as much as Matt would probably rather have
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: it at Lambeau. Yeah, I'm happier it's up there.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: Hear you, Michael Floor. This was awesome. We're gonna have
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: you on again in the offseason. We'll do a deeper dive.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: We'll go through everything. But I love that you would
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: hop on, especially a couple of days remove from what
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: was a a heartbreaking loss. But be like, dude, an
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: awesome football game, and I know it's the wounds are fresh,
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: but I think you'll be able to appreciate that in
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: the months that come.
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I appreciate you having me on. And it should
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: be a fun weekend of games. Huh.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: All right, Lafloor Verus Shanahan Part four? Is that what
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: we agreed on? Or three or something like that.
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: I don't know four or five. We had a COVID
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: game too, but it was everyone's just kind of yeah,
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: I forget it.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: Was a Thursday night COVID game. I remember that one.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: That was it. That was all right, Mike. I appreciate you, bro,
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: Thanks so much for joining the podcast.
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: Thanks Peter, appreciate you man.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: Aaron, what do you think of Michael Floor.
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: I love getting coaches that like can talk about the interescase.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: I mean, all the coaches clearly can talk about a
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: play or a player, but hearing him talk Stafford was
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: so cool. Like the story was Puka this year, the
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: story was Kiren, and for him to just so be
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: so on board with Stafford and like talk about how
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: tough he is.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: I love that.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: I love hearing good stuff about, like, you know, when
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: a coach is just all on board with the player.
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: I think I've said that plenty of times on the
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: show too.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: But no, I love that, and I love your appreciation
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: of it. I think you're really good when you listen
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: to these guys, you come right out of it and
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: you have like the right takeaway. I think the Stafford
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: thing was huge. I also the twenty nineteen forty nine
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: ers staff. In my head, I'm like, oh, he's coach
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: all these guys I thought would be a good one.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: But what I found really interesting is like, yeah, well,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: a year earlier, we all coach in the Senior Bowl, which,
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: if you're not aware, he is usually reserved for the
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: first or second worst team in the NFL. So those
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: same guys, those same young coaches were coaching as the
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: thirty first and thirty second teams in the league. They
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: were the same ones that we're looking at now, Like, Wow,
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: what a coaching staff. And to repeat what he said,
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: it's him Chris Casarah, who he kind of mentioned as
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: just like a given. You might not know his name.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: He's a defensive line coach for the forty nine ers.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: Think about their defensive line over the years with Bosa
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: and Ormstead and Buckner for years, and now it's Hargrave
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: and and of course you've got Chase Young. Like they're
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: always the most dominant. He's their defensive line coach. Then
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: in that same room with Bobby Slowick, who started off
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: on the defensive side of the ball, they went to
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: officer the Bobby's now the offensive Cornerata Houston probably gonna
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: get a head coaching job this year. Mike McDaniel, Demko Ryans,
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: Robert Sala. I want to say Wes Welker was on
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: that staff, John Embry, who's now doing big things with
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: McDaniel down in Miami. Like they have a loaded coaching
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: staff from that twenty nineteen San Francisco forty nine ers team,
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: and they've all been placing different places and are all
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: succeeding elsewhere. I love that coaching tree stuff in there,
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: with that graphic of the twenty thirteen Washington Redskins coaching staff,
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: which was McDaniel and lafleur and McVeigh and Chanance almost dated.
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: You almost have to update it with this one. That's
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: the new version of it.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: And I also love, I mean, along those lines with
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: like them doing this the Senior Bowl. I like to
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: hear when coaches or players or gms whatever have had
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: a rough year or a rough two years and then
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: go on and the immediately the next year succeed and
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: so that was just like that's a cool thing too,
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: Like you didn't you guys talked about it like he
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: was in New York and then he wasn't all right.
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: So, if we want to be candid, he got fired
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: in New York and kind of was the scapegoat, like
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: and sala Is one of his best friends, and the
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: whole thing was really awkward. And then it almost was
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: seamless because they brought in Rogers, who then brought in
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: his own guy, and it's like, well, Mike, you know,
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: it's better off with Sean McVeigh anyway, But like, it
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: sucks to get fired, and we didn't hit on it.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: Maybe I should have hit on it. I was I
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: don't think the conversation was going that place, but like
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: that's the dark side of coaching. Yeah, the Jets offense
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: wasn't great last two years. He also had a rookie
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: quarterback in Zach Wilson and then a second year quarterback
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: in Zach Wilson, who I think we see Zach Wilson now.
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: I don't think he's necessarily going to be a starter
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: anywhere in the league next year. So a lot of
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: things could be said about his time in New York,
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: but all right, McVeigh said, I believe everyone who's coached
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: with you thinks you're the guy. And I think their
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: offense was awesome this year, and he's being humble, but
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: Michael Floora is very responsible for what that offense was.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: And I don't know if Puka Nakua has the greatest
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: rookie wide receiver season ever if the offensive coordinator isn't
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: dialing it up and giving him the confidence to be
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: that guy.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: And him saying, you know, I think you asked, you know,
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: like was it the intention to get pook at twenty
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: targets in Week two kind of thing? And it was like, no,
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: you know, if we're we're doing everything right, we're not
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: forcing it to anybody, but great players are going to
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: get the ball and we're gonna make and you just
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: rattled off like we're gonna get to to the ball,
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: We're gonna get Kayra into the ball, and like he
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: these were weapons that they had last other than Pooka,
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: and I guess Kyrien because he was injured last year.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: These were weapons that were already on the team last year.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: And we're not making huge waves and then he comes
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: in and now all of a sudden, the Rams offense
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: was were world beaters on a down year?
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: A cup too? Like that was yeah, yeah, yeah, that
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: was awesome. All right, I'm gonna quickly, right, is there
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: anything else NFL wise as we head towards an awesome
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: divisional round week? You want to hit like, I'm trying
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: to think if there's anything. We start off in the
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: monologue and I don't know. I just this is my
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: real favorite weekend. I could smile and talk about it
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: on Good Morning Football. How much I love Wildcar Weekend?
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: I do, But this is where the big dogs come out,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: those one seeds come out, and it's almost like the
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: royal rumbo, where all right, who's next into the ring? Oh?
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: Those guys are still around, the Niners and the Ravens,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: who are by far the two best teams all all
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: season long. They're gonna be hosting playoff games against the
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: Packers and the Texans, respectively. I might go to Baltimore
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: and this is like, who cares? But I wouldn't be working.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: I'd be going I don't have the Fox pregame show
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: this weekend, and I Baltimore is a train ride away,
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: and as sick as I am, I kind of want
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: to see the Ravens in person, either this week or
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: if they win, maybe the AFC Championship game if I'm
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: not working for Fox that week, because I want to
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: take my son to see Lamar in person. It's his
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: favorite player. So I might. I might be in the building.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: It might be too cold. I might just watch it
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: on my couch, which is fine.
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: Yeah, speaking of too cold, I mean, we had a
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: snow game in Buffalo yesterday. We're gonna have another snow
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: game probably this weekend.
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: There.
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: Shout out to my uncle who was in the stands
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: wearing an electric heated jacket to stay warm for the
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: whole thing.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: What's your uncle's name.
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: Neil, Neil, Neil Kaufman. And he was, you know, we
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: we when I was up in Maine with my dad,
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: we facetimed with him after a couple of the games,
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: and he was there last night, and uh, you know,
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: we don't we don't have to talk about the Bills game.
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: But yeah, I'm very excited they did. They did really well.
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: Love seeing that Shakir touchdown and playing. Well, oh that's great.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: They're injured though, Yeah, every week.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: You could say that, so you know, I know nothing.
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: Shout out to Neil, shout out to the fact that
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: game is in Buffalo. I can't wait to watch that
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: one that's on Sunday night, Aaron, would you go to
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: that Sunday night in Buffalo? Would that be interest to you?
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: Or no? If I went to Saturday in Baltimore, would
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: you go to Sunday in Buffalo? Sure?
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: Yeah, of course I'm not would of course, yeah, of
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: course I wouldn't. I I mean, other than like having
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: to get there. Yeah, that's the only thing, right, Maybe
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: we make that happen. I you know, I have not
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: been to a Bills game.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: Since what do you need for me? I need?
- 1:14:43Speaker 4: What?
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: Like, you need me to help you with a credential
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: and then you need me to buy a flight in
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: Like what do we need the NFL to do here?
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: Because I think that would be great first person experience.
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: I think I need. I would also probably need de
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: Vito's agents walk in closet. I want a room full
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: of suits.
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: By the way, top that off topic. If the Melafan
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: Wu is one of these defensive backs of the Lions
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: making plays all over the place, his agent is on Stillado,
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: Stellato posted a photo of himself in like a royal
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: blue suit, all lions down. He's still doing it, you know.
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: F the haters, Stellato's now forget DeVito. He's on too.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: I female fon wou And by the way, as we
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: all celebrated, you know Tommy DeVito's mature decision to move
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: on to a different marketing agent. I don't exactly see
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: Tommy DeVito at the met gala. By the way, I
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: think I think the Vito did a did a fine
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: job with marketing with Seawan Stillato, they got some things done. Yeah.
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: You know, that was a great moment in a season
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: that's had a ton of really good quarterback moments. And
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: you know, like you were saying earlier, we now have
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: the CJ. Stroud Jordan Love stories.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: We move on. Yeah, yeah, we move on. Let's go
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: to the season with Peter Shaker delivering results by Uber Eats.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: It's time for delivering results presented by Uber Eats. I'm
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: gonna give a player an award for who delivered the
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: most this past week, and I'm gonna give it to
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: Jordan Love. I thought Jordan Love was amazing, absolutely ripped
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: apart the Dallas Cowboys. They were big underdog seven seed,
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: and Love looks like the best quarterback in football right now.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: He's got a big task ahead going up against San
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: Francisco in their defense this weekend. But after seeing what
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: he did Dallas, I have no doubt that he has
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: what it takes to get it done. They just need
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: to put it all together this weekend. Jordan Love truly
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: awesome story this season. They were two and five at
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: one point, they were three and six at one point,
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: and now they're knocking on the door to the NFC
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: Championship Game. Jordan Love is our winner of the Delivering
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: Results Award presented by Uber Eats. That was Delivering Results
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: presented by Uber Eats. We can get almost almost anything,
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: the official on the man delivery partner of the NFL Order. Now,
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: all right, everybody, we'll see you next week. By that time,
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: maybe Belichick's coaching the Dallas Cowboys, or the Philadelphia Eagles
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: or Atlanta Falcons. Maybe Jim Harbo's coaching the Chargers, or
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: maybe Pete Carroll's coaching a CFL team. I have no idea.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: We don't know what it's going to be. Hopefully we'll
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: get some more clarity, but we will be down to
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: our final four and then itampionship weekend. Cannot wait. It's
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: football season on behalf of Aaron Wan Kaufman, Jason English
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: and oh, by the way, real quick, we're going to
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: leave this in to our two producers out on the
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: West Coast. Good guys, Matt Schneider and Jason Kleinman. They
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: are Arizona Wildcat diehards. Sorry about Jedfish. I think the
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: Jedfish to Washington move is not looked wonderfully upon by
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: the Arizona Wildcat fans. I think on Friday, Jed said
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: he's not going anywhere than on Saturday, except that a
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: fifty five million dollar deal to go work for the
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: University of Washington. We take a lot of pride and
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: that we helped put Jed on the map a little
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: bit nationally with his interview in August. He went and
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: had an amazing season and now he's a lot richer
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: than all of us combined and with a lot more
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: successful and hopefully he'll come on the podcast again, but
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: he will not be coaching the Arizona Wildcats, and I
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: apologize for that to our two producers, Matt and Jason,
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: who are great guys. They're on the West Coast. Sorry. Boys. Also,
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: I want to pick everyone else involved who does the
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: stuff here on the podcast. We've had fun this season.
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: Complain it's been great until next week. The Season with
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: Peter Schrager. The Season with Peter Schrager is a production
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: of the NFL and partnership with iHeartRadio. For more podcasts
