- 11:53Speaker 4: signed off Marla Hutchins case.
- 11:56Speaker 2: The verdict was that she had taken her own life.
- 11:58Speaker 4: The police psychiatrist told us that probably the hypnotic treatments
- 12:01Speaker 4: by Schulte had hastened her death.
- 12:03Speaker 2: The information we'd.
- 12:04Speaker 4: Received from the Medical Association told us that they had
- 12:07Speaker 4: had complaints against the operation of the Schulte school. They
- 12:10Speaker 4: pointed out to us that it takes over twelve years
- 12:12Speaker 4: and recognized medical schools to become a member of the
- 12:15Speaker 4: American Psychiatric Association. Schulte had been mass producing the pseudo psychiatrists.
- 12:20Speaker 2: In eight weeks we met with Captain Pulman.
- 12:23Speaker 10: The school was a phony degrees and diplomas sold anybody
- 12:26Speaker 10: who had cash.

- 13:00Speaker 2: where Shirley is. No, we don't but we're looking. We've
- 13:03Speaker 2: got the support of the medical people to push a BUNCO.
- 13:06Speaker 10: Charge for the operation of the old school. Donaldson should
- 13:09Speaker 10: be able to give you a lead on Shirley Thankers.
- 13:11Speaker 10: It might be in contact. Looks like the accent ran the.
- 13:14Speaker 9: School together even though Shulte was legally responsible.
- 13:17Speaker 4: And Ben and I have an idea on how maybe
- 13:19Speaker 4: we can find out How's that We thought one of
- 13:22Speaker 4: us could make our pitch to Donaldson, see if he'd
- 13:24Speaker 4: sell a degree from the new school, get evidence to
- 13:27Speaker 4: support a BUNCO warrant, and check at the same time
- 13:29Speaker 4: to see if Donaldson has contact with Shuelte.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Well, let BUNCO detail know. We're try. I think you
- 13:35Speaker 2: can do it quite try know anything else about Donaldson's courses.
- 13:39Speaker 4: No, that doesn't bother me. O come neither is Donaldson
- 13:47Speaker 4: and trying to get Shulte through his former associate Leo Donaldson.
- 13:50Speaker 4: We again contacted the Medical Association. They furnished this with
- 13:53Speaker 4: the name of Ralph Morse, a graduate of the.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Franklin Street School who had since been killed in an
- 13:58Speaker 2: auto accident.

- 14:09Speaker 4: of Psychiatry for rooms two fourteen and two sixteen.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Ben waited outside in the car. I took the elevator up.
- 14:33Speaker 2: He asked me, how, doctor Donaldson. I'm doctor Leo Donaldson.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Have you have assistance?
- 14:37Speaker 4: Well, my name is Frank Ditton. I wanted to ask
- 14:39Speaker 4: about the curriculum here.
- 14:41Speaker 9: We've just opened. Mister Ditton, we're not quite ready to
- 14:43Speaker 9: start classes. You understand this is very advanced instruction. Most
- 14:47Speaker 9: of our students would have had considerable background in psychiatry.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Oh well, our friend of mine, doctor Morse, said.
- 14:52Speaker 2: That they were sure I'd be a good student for you,
- 14:54Speaker 2: doctor Morse. I'm not sure I placed him, but.
- 14:58Speaker 4: He was one of your students at the Franklin Streets.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Rule said that doctor Schulte know him quite well.
- 15:02Speaker 9: Oh, oh yes, yes, I remember, brilliant man. How's he
- 15:06Speaker 9: getting along?
- 15:06Speaker 2: He was killed in a car collision. Oh that's too bad.
- 15:10Speaker 4: Well, Frankly, what I was interested in is being able
- 15:13Speaker 4: to take over his practice. Could I get the same
- 15:15Speaker 4: deal he got?
- 15:16Speaker 2: I think so, mister Didton, What do you have in mind.
- 15:18Speaker 4: We'll take some courses and get a degree. I worked
- 15:21Speaker 4: with Morris Broke while I can set up a clinic
- 15:23Speaker 4: he did.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Okay, I figure maybe I can too.
- 15:26Speaker 9: Well, here's a list of the courses we'll offer. I
- 15:28Speaker 9: can't look over it together, and you can indicate what
- 15:30Speaker 9: spirit sad you would like to undertake.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Does doctor Shulte teach any of these courses? No, he doesn't. Now.
- 15:37Speaker 9: The first semester will include Painless and Douglas's Childbirth Practical
- 15:41Speaker 9: and Applied Psychology out.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Of suggestion, prenatal suggestion.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Yeah, well, look, doctor Donaldson, A straight practical and applied
- 15:48Speaker 4: psychology is the specialty.
- 15:50Speaker 2: That I want to see? What degree do I get?
- 15:52Speaker 2: And how much will it cost?
- 15:53Speaker 9: Well, at least expensive is a doctor of Psychotherapy at
- 15:56Speaker 9: four hundred and fifty dollars. A Doctor to Philosophy and
- 15:58Speaker 9: Psychology is five hundred for all purposes if you can
- 16:02Speaker 9: afford it. Mister Ditton is a doctorate of Science. That's
- 16:04Speaker 9: eight hundred. That course once a thousand dollars at the
- 16:07Speaker 9: Franklin Street School.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I don't know. It's a lot of money. Yes,
- 16:11Speaker 4: I have to have it though, and if you'd take
- 16:13Speaker 4: a checking out.
- 16:14Speaker 9: Certainly you understand what a tremendous advantage these degrees are
- 16:17Speaker 9: to the professional man, who, for one reason or another
- 16:20Speaker 9: may never have had a chance to get a college diploma.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Well, the course is very hard.
- 16:25Speaker 9: You look like an intelligent man, mister Ditton. I'm sure
- 16:27Speaker 9: you'd have no difficulty.
- 16:29Speaker 4: All right, I'll say, Look, doctor, I live out in
- 16:31Speaker 4: Van Eyes now, and I'm working three days a week
- 16:33Speaker 4: the present time. It's going to be pretty tough to
- 16:35Speaker 4: get downtown here.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Do I have to be here every day?
- 16:38Speaker 9: Since it's the diplomas most of our students are interested in,
- 16:40Speaker 9: we have on occasion made exceptions in cases like yours.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Well, I appreciate that we.
- 16:45Speaker 9: Could possibly, in the case of a doctorate of science,
- 16:47Speaker 9: present you with your diploma in advance. If you're taking
- 16:49Speaker 9: the course, and you could launch into a private practice
- 16:51Speaker 9: at once, take the course whenever it suited.
- 16:53Speaker 2: You couldn't ask for a better deal. Everything's mentioned in.
- 16:56Speaker 9: This catalog, and the forums are in the back. Why
- 16:58Speaker 9: don't you sit down, I think very much.
- 17:05Speaker 10: Yeah, rules and regulations, No books are required to students,
- 17:11Speaker 10: lots of break We lecture a little differently from some colleges,
- 17:14Speaker 10: and therefore we've dispensed with texts because we feel they
- 17:17Speaker 10: tend to confuse the data.
- 17:19Speaker 2: When I take the course, who will be my instructor?
- 17:21Speaker 4: I will Well Morse talked a lot about doctor Shulte.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Does he teach any of the classes?
- 17:26Speaker 9: Now, doctor Schulte was associated with me in the operation
- 17:29Speaker 9: of the Franklin Street School, but is not the staff
- 17:31Speaker 9: a member of the California Physicians College or psychiatry.
- 17:34Speaker 4: Well, Well is wondering if I paid extra, could I
- 17:36Speaker 4: get some classes with him? More so that he picked
- 17:38Speaker 4: up a lot of useful information from Shield.
- 17:40Speaker 2: He's a fellow with a goatee, and he yes, that's right.
- 17:43Speaker 9: Well, truthfully, I have no idea where doctor Shulte is
- 17:45Speaker 9: presently located.
- 17:50Speaker 2: And that's one regulation here.
- 17:53Speaker 4: No student will be admitted who cannot show documentary proof
- 17:57Speaker 4: of the successful completion of secondary school work.
- 18:00Speaker 2: High school. You can understand that cancer, mister didn't. I mean?
- 18:04Speaker 9: Well, there are certain minimum academic standards we must observe. Yeah,
- 18:08Speaker 9: in order to maintain the quality of our degree.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Doctor Donaldson accepted my check to the amount of eight
- 18:17Speaker 4: hundred dollars. I asked for a receipt and he filled
- 18:19Speaker 4: out a blank Doctorate of Science degree, which he carefully
- 18:21Speaker 4: lettered with the name Frank Didton and signed himself as Dean.
- 18:25Speaker 2: I arrested Donaldson and Ben and I took him in
- 18:27Speaker 2: for booking.
- 18:28Speaker 4: One PM we received a long teletype from Washington. Arthur
- 18:32Speaker 4: Shulte had a record of arrests and convictions back east,
- 18:35Speaker 4: and started with a conviction sixteen years ago for the
- 18:38Speaker 4: interstate transportation of pornographic motion pictures. The record gave us
- 18:42Speaker 4: no known addresses, but important in the information was the
- 18:45Speaker 4: fact that Schulte had originally been trained and had worked
- 18:48Speaker 4: at being a projectionist in movie theaters. In the mo
- 18:51Speaker 4: was the notation that he'd been known to take up
- 18:53Speaker 4: his old occupation when.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Sought by authorities.
- 18:56Speaker 4: One thirty five PM we contacted the local office of
- 18:59Speaker 4: the Motion Picture Projectionist Union.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Where they told us that they had played the art
- 19:02Speaker 2: of Shoelte.
- 19:03Speaker 4: In the booth of one of the main street newsreel
- 19:05Speaker 4: houses on Sunday, that was the day before.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Two thirty pm.
- 19:09Speaker 4: The Crescent Theater was buried between two bars and advertised
- 19:12Speaker 4: an hour of newsreels and short subjects for twenty cents.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Where's the manager. I'm him. Can we talked to him?
- 19:19Speaker 2: And at police officers? What I say? We're police officers.
- 19:23Speaker 14: We'd like to talk to you.
- 19:24Speaker 10: Nobody here to take over. Why don't you come in
- 19:26Speaker 10: and I can open the booth door here and talk.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Okay, right around the back. I guess here have been Thanks.
- 19:37Speaker 10: Hey mister, okay, what's the trouble officers?
- 19:43Speaker 2: You have a man in the name of Schulte working here.
- 19:45Speaker 10: That's right, projectionist isn't working right this minute though, it
- 19:48Speaker 10: comes down to the four an hour.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Alright.
- 19:51Speaker 4: I wonder if you had to take a look at
- 19:54Speaker 4: this description police.
- 19:55Speaker 10: Yeah, there you are. I have eleven man working here,
- 20:02Speaker 10: is clean shaven? No, go gee, that'side that sounds the same.
- 20:06Speaker 10: Any idea where he lives? No, I don't, Well, we'll
- 20:09Speaker 10: have to wait.
- 20:09Speaker 2: For him here.
- 20:10Speaker 14: All right, Wait a.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Minute, this one.
- 20:16Speaker 14: Where do you want to wait inside?
- 20:18Speaker 2: Well? I think we'd stay up in the projection booth.
- 20:20Speaker 2: It's all right.
- 20:21Speaker 14: After steel stairs there on the right. Tell Pete I agen.
- 20:23Speaker 10: He's the man up there now, I said it was okay.
- 20:26Speaker 2: All right, don't say anything too when he gets you.
- 20:27Speaker 4: What you say, I won't bet Yes, this way.
- 20:34Speaker 11: It's a long climb. Huh yeah, oh yeah, must be it.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Are you mester there? Mess there?
- 20:51Speaker 4: Yeah, police officers. Anything wrong, We're gonna have to wait here.
- 20:55Speaker 4: The manager said, it was okay, wait for what. We
- 20:59Speaker 4: want to talk to your relief man.
- 21:00Speaker 14: I mean the doc.
- 21:01Speaker 2: You know him just since yesterday.
- 21:04Speaker 14: Why do you call him the doc?
- 21:06Speaker 2: Oh?
- 21:06Speaker 14: You know, it speaks kind of fancy for a projectionist.
- 21:09Speaker 12: What do you do?
- 21:09Speaker 14: Oh, he just likes to talk to him. Okay, you
- 21:12Speaker 14: know the guy doesn't come on for about an hour.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Yeah. They told us you want to look at the picture.
- 21:16Speaker 10: You can both sit by the observation.
- 21:18Speaker 14: For it in the film stage there.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, sit over here. Ben, just all right here?
- 21:24Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 21:25Speaker 14: Huh, Well, what's the matter.
- 21:29Speaker 2: I've seen this news reel five pm.
- 21:34Speaker 4: Shuelde was nearly two hours late. Ben and I were
- 21:37Speaker 4: worrying about whether or somehow he'd been tippering.
- 21:39Speaker 2: H usual for men to be this late for a shift,
- 21:44Speaker 2: not in a house like this.
- 21:45Speaker 14: Bigger hosts would be different.
- 21:47Speaker 10: Wait, with the doc being late like this, just cast
- 21:49Speaker 10: the boss a couple of bucks. What do you mean
- 21:51Speaker 10: I got more dough? I'm over my maximum hours. The
- 21:55Speaker 10: old guy'd stay away long enough, I'd be.
- 21:56Speaker 12: On golden golden.
- 21:58Speaker 2: What's that?
- 21:59Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 21:59Speaker 10: Double and a half time. Boys in a business called
- 22:02Speaker 10: it golden time. Oh, most so you can get his
- 22:04Speaker 10: double golden. You'll get that working over maximum number of
- 22:08Speaker 10: hours after midnight on a Sunday. Uh huh, that's double golden.
- 22:12Speaker 10: Never happened to me, though.
- 22:14Speaker 2: How do you stand?
- 22:15Speaker 14: What do you mean?
- 22:15Speaker 10: The money annoying? You can get used to it. Don't pay
- 22:19Speaker 10: any attention after a while.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Don't you get tired of hearing the same soundtrack over
- 22:24Speaker 4: and over?
- 22:25Speaker 14: No, you just know it's there.
- 22:26Speaker 10: It never registers what they're saying. I mean, just if
- 22:29Speaker 10: it stops when it shouldn't get us doing over.
- 22:31Speaker 2: The years, I've been doing this wrong, eleven.
- 22:34Speaker 14: It's a long time. Excuse me. I gotta make a
- 22:38Speaker 14: switch over.
- 22:40Speaker 10: Would you say I said I gotta make a switch over.
- 22:43Speaker 4: I've been watching you do that all afternoon. How do
- 22:45Speaker 4: you know when to turn the other projector on?
- 22:47Speaker 10: Mark's on the film up in the right corner on
- 22:49Speaker 10: the screen, usually a black dot look through the window,
- 22:52Speaker 10: look man, right here. The first dot tells me to
- 22:55Speaker 10: start the other projector. When the second dot hits I
- 22:58Speaker 10: cut this one, turn on the other one. Watch, okay,
- 23:03Speaker 10: see you the first one?
- 23:04Speaker 14: Uh huh, Now.
- 23:09Speaker 10: In the second gud see uh huh.
- 23:17Speaker 14: You never know the difference. Simple stuff. People have never
- 23:20Speaker 14: seen the notice of switches.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Waits a minute, alright.
- 23:29Speaker 14: Doc, a little late, sorry, Eva slimped. Your name is Schuldie.
- 23:36Speaker 4: That's a right, police options would like to talk to you.
- 23:39Speaker 4: I have to go to work anyway. You want to
- 23:42Speaker 4: go downstairs? All right, that's way, all right, this will
- 23:57Speaker 4: be fine right here.
- 24:01Speaker 2: You say your name is Shulte, Arthur William Shulte. That's correct.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Ever been known by any other name?
- 24:07Speaker 9: Why do you operate a school called the Los Angeles
- 24:12Speaker 9: College of Psychotherapeutics in psychiatry.
- 24:14Speaker 2: During the past year. I'm not saying.
- 24:16Speaker 14: Anything, or are you living master, I'm not saying anything.

- 24:43Speaker 10: Yeah, just try to pull a piece of paper there
- 24:45Speaker 10: and it's just a bill.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Mh What is it, Jim, It's a bill Millican Hotel.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 24:58Speaker 4: We drove to the Milican Hotel, about six blocks from
- 25:01Speaker 4: the theater in the same skid road district. We got
- 25:03Speaker 4: the key from the room park and went up the
- 25:04Speaker 4: Shoelta's room looked like any dingy hotel room.
- 25:07Speaker 2: A small foot locker.
- 25:08Speaker 4: Sat at the end of the bed on the baggage stand.
- 25:10Speaker 4: The two suitcases were over by the closet and sitting
- 25:13Speaker 4: on the floor alongside the bureau with two waist high
- 25:15Speaker 4: stacks of books.
- 25:16Speaker 9: You've got the key to the small drunk I don't
- 25:19Speaker 9: have to.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Submit to this. Let's open it up.
- 25:22Speaker 12: Open at yourself.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Here's the key, two main coats. I'll check the rest room. Joe,

- 26:09Speaker 9: matched ear rings that are.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Stolen property reports. These were gifts. People say you took them.
- 26:14Speaker 2: They're sick. I've done them a lot of good, but
- 26:17Speaker 2: they know they thanked me.
- 26:18Speaker 9: This way, people, I get these things from they know
- 26:22Speaker 9: I've helped.
- 26:22Speaker 4: Them where you help Marlo Hutchins.
- 26:31Speaker 2: The story you have just.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Heard was true, only the names were changed to protect
- 26:36Speaker 3: the innocent.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Arthur Shulty, free.
- 26:39Speaker 3: On bail pending trial, died of natural causes on June fifteenth.
- 26:42Speaker 3: In Presno, California. Leo Donaldson was tried and convicted of
- 26:46Speaker 3: grand theft and served a term prescribed by law in
- 26:48Speaker 3: the state penitentiary.
- 26:50Speaker 2: And now here is our star, Jack Beab. Thank you.
- 26:54Speaker 4: When the rookie policeman becomes a full fledged member of
- 26:56Speaker 4: the department, one of the first things he becomes aware
- 26:58Speaker 4: of is the time warned of the peace officers. He
- 27:02Speaker 4: has pride in the man he works with, pride in
- 27:04Speaker 4: his job.
- 27:14Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, The Chief of Police of the City
- 27:16Speaker 3: of Los Angeles, wh Parker.
- 27:19Speaker 13: The Los Angeles Police Department awards this citation of me

- 27:31Speaker 13: Angeles Police Department and its officers, and enhancing the prestige
- 27:36Speaker 13: of law enforcement generally among its millions of listeners.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Thank you, Chief Parker, you have just heard Dragnet a
- 27:45Speaker 3: series of authentic cases from official files. Technical advice comes
- 27:49Speaker 3: from the Office of Chief of Police wh Parker, Los

- 28:29Speaker 15: You're listening to the great Detectives of Old Time Radio
- 28:32Speaker 15: with Adam Graham. Now let's get back into the show.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Welcome back. This is another one of those dragon An
- 28:45Speaker 1: episodes that really feels like it could have been told today. Now,
- 28:51Speaker 1: certainly some of the methods may have changed, but medical
- 28:54Speaker 1: quackery still claims many victim and as the episode points out,
- 29:01Speaker 1: the damages can go beyond what we typically associate with fraud,
- 29:06Speaker 1: which is what they would be charged with, and can
- 29:09Speaker 1: have a far more lasting impact. And that's true in
- 29:12Speaker 1: a lot of areas as there's all sorts of claims
- 29:16Speaker 1: and it's very hard to sift it all. Also, I
- 29:20Speaker 1: think that the scene with Friday talking to the projectionist
- 29:25Speaker 1: really did remind me of Jack Webb, Web famously was
- 29:31Speaker 1: on the film sets pestering the directors and everybody who
- 29:35Speaker 1: had a job related to the movies to ask questions
- 29:38Speaker 1: about how they did their job and what happened in
- 29:42Speaker 1: the course of it. And so that seemed very authentic there.
- 29:46Speaker 1: All right, Well, now we turn to listener comments and feedback,
- 29:51Speaker 1: and Frank writes a review on the Amazon app Store. No,
- 29:55Speaker 1: Sam Spade, really Spade is the great attack of old
- 30:00Speaker 1: time radio? Is that Bogie as Spade on the cover?
- 30:03Speaker 1: Come on, guys, get some Sam Spade or change the
- 30:06Speaker 1: name to the second tier of Great Detectives of Old
- 30:12Speaker 1: Time Radio. Well, the cover is an artist rendering and
- 30:18Speaker 1: certainly is evocative of Bogart, but also Bogart played Philip Marlow.
- 30:28Speaker 1: In all seriousness, we do have Sam Spade on our
- 30:31Speaker 1: list of shows we'd like to do someday, and hopefully
- 30:35Speaker 1: we will get to it in a few years. But
- 30:37Speaker 1: I definitely do appreciate your thought. All right, Well, that
- 30:41Speaker 1: we'll do it for today. On Monday, we wrap up
- 30:44Speaker 1: a sixth year of the Great Detectives of Old Time
