- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Rider, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: What do powerful words look like?
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: When you think of powerful words, you probably imagine Abraham Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address or JFK giving a speech about America's mission to go to the moon.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Or maybe you imagine an author like Maya Angelou talking about how she overcame a difficult childhood.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: But powerful words aren't just reserved for classic speeches or world-renowned books.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: You have powerful words too.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: In fact, there is one single two-letter word that has more power than anything else in your vocabulary.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: But first, a quote from E.B.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: White, who was the author of classic children's books like Stuart Little and Charlotte's Webb.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: He was also the second half of the Strunk and White duo, who was responsible for the elements of style, which is the best little book every writer should read.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Anyway, E.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: B.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: White said, I must decline for secret reasons.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Now, we don't know the reasons that he declined or what exactly he was declining, but we do know this.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: He said no to an invitation, and he didn't elaborate on the reasons.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: He was confident enough in his reasoning to let his simple no just be a no.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: No is such a small word.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: It's just two simple letters, but it has immense power because it can give you the freedom to make time for your writing and to help you focus on what's most important.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: You have a lot of things pulling you in different directions.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: It's okay to say no.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: You can't do everything and you can't please everybody.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: And if your writing is going to be a priority, you have to make time and space in your life to do it.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: And that just means saying no sometimes.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Now, of course, it's easier said than done, but if you want to reach your full potential as a writer, you have to focus on doing the work that matters rather than focusing on trying to make everybody else in the world happy.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: That little two letter word no is the ultimate key to your success.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
