- 0:01Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, a
- 0:04podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:08I'm your host Andrew Mcgibbon for December 5th.
- 0:11Today is National Bartender Day, honoring the people who mix
- 0:15drinks and listen. Our tenders are known not just
- 0:19for their mixology skills, but also for being pseudo
- 0:22psychologists. In other words, they're good
- 0:27listeners. Which brings us to today's quote
- 0:30from bartending expert Harry Gordon Johnson, who once wrote
- 0:34the greatest accomplishment of the bartender lies in his
- 0:38ability to exactly suit his customer.
- 0:44Johnson understood it's not about flashy tricks.
- 0:47It's about reading people, knowing when to chat and when to
- 0:51stay quiet. Good bartenders don't just pour
- 0:54drinks. They match the moment, strong
- 0:58when you need strength, light when you need ease.
- 1:02They suit you Exactly. I actually used to be a
- 1:08bartender and I learned this lesson pretty quick.
- 1:11I have been working weeknights because I like having weekends
- 1:15off, but I decided to switch shifts and started working the
- 1:19weekends. One of the other bartenders
- 1:22warned me about this jerk who always sits at the end of the
- 1:25bar. He spends hundreds of dollars
- 1:29every Friday night and doesn't tip at all, while sure enough,
- 1:33at the end of the night, a big huge bill with a big 0 written
- 1:39into the tip line. So after a couple weeks of this,
- 1:43one Friday I served him his drink and I stuck around for a
- 1:46bit. He spoke about his family and
- 1:49friends and some trouble his kids got into recently.
- 1:53For the rest of the night, when I wasn't busy with other
- 1:55customers and he wasn't chatting with someone else, I'd step over
- 2:00there and be a good conversationalist.
- 2:03Well, at the end of the night, after ordering a lot of drinks
- 2:07for himself and others at the bar, there was a huge tab with a
- 2:1220% tip included. Wow, lesson learned.
- 2:19My job wasn't just making and serving good drinks, it was much
- 2:23more than that for the people who needed that.
- 2:27Some people who come into a bar by themselves and sit at the
- 2:31actual bar are looking for more than a drink.
- 2:35Others, that's all they want. And it was my job to exactly
- 2:39suit my customer. So next time you go for a drink,
- 2:44see how the bartender adapts to your personality.
- 2:47Maybe they're matching your mood before you say a word, reading
- 2:51your needs, suiting you. Exactly.
- 2:54Johnson was right. That's the art, that's the
- 2:59accomplishment, and that's going to do it for today.
- 3:04Amanda McGivern signing off for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 3:09Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
