- 0:07New York Yankees faced the Kansas City Athletics at Municipal Stadium for a Sunday afternoon game on September 6, 1964.
- 0:14New York was coached by Yogi Berra, and they were looking to win the A.L. Pennant for the fifth year in a row.
- 0:19But they entered this game in third place, three and a half games behind the White Sox and a half game behind the Orioles.
- 0:25Kansas City was coached by Mel Magaha, who took over the club when Eddie Lopat lost his job when the A's fell to 20 games under 500 in mid-June.
- 0:34Unfortunately, by September, Magaha had the A's nearly 40 games under 500.
- 0:39This audio recording is from the Kansas City Radio broadcast, which unfortunately only includes a small excerpt of the game, starting from the bottom of the eighth and continuing until the end of the game.
- 0:49Not many Kansas City Athletics recordings still exist, so we decided to release this as is so that you can enjoy at least a few innings of broadcasters George Bryson and Monty Moore.
- 1:19A rim off is better.
- 1:24One ball and a strike to Callanelli. We're in the last half of the eighth, gotta get some runs. We have this chance and one more to do it.
- 1:35Segui's best effort is down the drain so far. We have not scored a run.
- 1:40Gotta do it now. Here's the pitch.
- 1:42There's a high foul up back of third.
- 1:49Our attendance here, 21,372. We now have 610,845 paid in the ballpark this year.
- 2:0121,372 here this afternoon. Beautiful day.
- 2:06Matthew's at the plate. Roland Sheldon has won three and lost one. I don't know whether they've kept him all year, but he's been very good here today.
- 2:15Here's the pitch. Foul ball back into the screen.
- 2:23One ball, two strikes.
- 2:42Sheldon in the windup. Here comes his pitch.
- 2:45Little low and outside. Two balls and two strikes.
- 2:49Everybody finished now except Baltimore and Los Angeles and the Cleveland Chicago second game.
- 2:54Cleveland leading 1-0. Cleveland won the first game.
- 2:58The Yankees can sneak a lot closer now. Baltimore loses.
- 3:04Here's Sheldon's pitch. There's a line drive right field, right at Roger Maris. He's there, he's got it.
- 3:12Let's have a station break. This is the Kansas City A's baseball network.
- 3:17KCMO 810 radio, Kansas City, Missouri. Voice of the Kansas City A's baseball and Kansas City Chiefs football.
- 3:24Five minutes past four.
- 3:27George Bryson with Molly Moore of Municipal Stadium in Kansas City. The score here, the Yankees 3, A's nothing.
- 3:32We have but four hits. One out to batter Dick Green who struck out and grounded onto the pitcher.
- 3:43Now the pitch on the way. Low ball. Jimenez will hit for Segui who will not get a chance to tie the all-time Kansas City strikeout record.
- 3:52He's going to leave with a dozen.
- 3:57Now the pitch. Little low this time. Two balls and no strikes.
- 4:03Native pitcher has given any indication of wildness here today. They've all been ahead with one exception, Q-back.
- 4:12Segui was behind on him when he hit the ball out of the ballpark. First man up in the inning in the ballgame.
- 4:26Two and 0 count. Here's Sheldon's pitch. Right in there a strike call, two and one.
- 4:41Sheldon ready to pitch again. Here it is.
- 4:43Fastball hit back to Richardson. Throw him into the center field. A base hit.
- 4:47Bobby took a dive but the ball couldn't come up with it. A line drive, base hit. And we're alive here in the eighth inning.
- 4:53That's our fifth hit. And the batter now will be Manny Jimenez hitting for Segui.
- 5:04Manny has a brother playing with the Ritzman in the Yankee organization.
- 5:14Yankee three, A is nothing. Last half of the eighth, green in first base. Jimenez at the plate. Pinch header for the pitcher.
- 5:25Here's Sheldon, the right-hander. All ready to go. Here's the pitch to Manny. Swung on a miss, strike one.
- 5:40No balls and a strike. Manny, a left-hand hitter. Can't hit that ball.
- 5:47Menfield swung around the right. Double play depth. Here's the pitch. Curveball strike. Ball strike two. Go and do the count on Jimenez.
- 6:03Sheldon in trouble a little bit in the seventh inning and a little in the fourth inning. That's all. Runner at third and none out. He got us out.
- 6:10A couple of hits in the seventh. Here's the pitch. There's a bouncing ball foul off down towards first. Capitone comes up with it.
- 6:24The Cardinals got a run on the last half of the eleventh inning to beat the Chicago Cubs five to four.
- 6:31The National League schedule is finished. I'll have all the information for you on the scoreboard which will follow the broadcast of this game.
- 6:39Sheldon in the stretch. Here's the pitch. Jimenez takes it inside. Almost hit him. One ball and two strikes.
- 6:45Manny thought he had it then. There's a fastball right in on him.
- 6:57One ball and two strikes on Jimenez.
- 7:07Sheldon delivers. Manny swings and bounces another one foul off towards first base.
- 7:15And look at the contenders now. Baltimore and Los Angeles scoreless in the last half of the fifth inning out of Los Angeles.
- 7:20Cleveland won Chicago nothing in the fourth inning. Out of the second game Cleveland won the first game.
- 7:26Boy they're big now when the contenders lose.
- 7:35One ball and two strikes on Manny. Here's his pitch. There's a little looping fly ball that Boyer will tuck away. He's there. He's got it with one hand.
- 7:43Not much effort there. Jimenez pops out to Boyer and the batter is Cavanaris.
- 7:56Cavanaris went up three times. Popped out twice and lined out one.
- 8:05Back to the matter we have not hit the ball on the ground many times. One of them hurt us badly. A double play by Gentile. Now Barrett is going to go out and talk to his pitcher.
- 8:12George I'll tell you this guy has been getting away with a lot of bad pitches the last two or three innings.
- 8:17Howard has been yelling at him several times indicating you better get a little more on these pitches.
- 8:23I've seen our ball players take home run cuts at high hanging sliders or curve balls about six times this afternoon that they've missed.
- 8:31Boy I'll tell you he has gotten away with murder here today so far and that pitch he just threw Manny right then was just a little lollipop. He managed to get him on the front foot.
- 8:39That's what they're talking about. I imagine they want to find out if he feels he has that much stuff left. They can't afford to let another guy get on someone and pop one out here on a bad pitch.
- 8:48Campanaris at the plate right now. Runner at first base.
- 8:53Dagberto hitting 299 going into this ball game with four homers and 18 RBI. Came out of nowhere to help us out.
- 9:00Broke in with a bang, hit a home run his first time up in the big leagues and later in that same game hit another home run which put him in a pretty select group of guys. Three who have done it.
- 9:10Now I'll write sense to. Here's a pitch to him. Has a high fly ball center field. Coming hard is fresh. Should get there. He is there and he makes the catch.
- 9:20For the eighth inning no runs on a hit and no errors and a man left and the scores will go down to the top half of the ninth inning. Yankees three and the A's one.
- 9:28Every time I go on a picnic I wonder why someone hasn't figured out an easier way to keep beer cold. Always seemed to me there had to be a better way.
- 9:35Well now the folks at hand have found a better way. It's the hand the cold back. Keeps 12 cans of hands crisp and cold all afternoon and there's no ice needed.
- 9:44No extra cost either. You just pick up a cold pack of hands and the silver and blue carton is your favorite dealer and well a few hours later the beer is still drinking cold.
- 9:53The secret is laminated aluminized carton. You can recognize it by the aluminum foil finish. Man for convenience this new cold pack from hand just can't be beat.
- 10:02So look for the handsome aluminum foil hands cold pack. 12 cans of freshness. Hands refreshing as the land the sky blue waters.
- 10:16The double header here tomorrow the pitchers Orlando Pena will pitch in the first game for Kansas City and Wally Bunker a sensational 19 year old kid who has won 14 or 15 ball games for Baltimore 15 I believe.
- 10:27He's been the ace five times this year so we'll play him tomorrow Bob Meyer left hander for the A's in the second game against Dave McNally a left hander for the Orioles.
- 10:37You stay with us the rest of this American League season and you're going to be able to get a pretty good idea on what's going to happen.
- 10:43And that's going to happen better wise because we play 13 more games against the pen and contending teams in the American League. We'll play the Orioles two games here tomorrow and four games in Baltimore next weekend.
- 10:57We play the White Sox three more games here and three more in Chicago and we play the Yankees three more in New York.
- 11:03A lot of excitement left on our broadcast this year. George and we have some coming on now in the ninth inning to Elton Howard, Cleve Boyer, Roland Sheldon against West Dock who's come on the pitch.
- 11:12And then we have Steve Sagi who did a very good job but couldn't couldn't get ahead.
- 11:16There's a strike call.
- 11:18We didn't score any runs on five hits.
- 11:22He gave up three runs two of them painted one of them a solid smash a home run by Kubek.
- 11:27Here's West Dock ready in the pitch.
- 11:30Outside one ball and one strike.
- 11:33Why he forward in the Yankee bullpen right now.
- 11:37Just probably to loosen up.
- 11:41He's on the strike next pitch.
- 11:43There's a drive center field a base hit Howard is on.
- 11:47A three straight hit for Elston Howard.
- 11:50And the batter now is Cleve Boyer.
- 11:53Boyer one ball three got a single back in the fifth inning.
- 11:57I'd like to pick myself a ball club off the other teams to play in this part who hit in this part.
- 12:02You think right off of Elston Howard is hitting over 400 here the last two years average wise.
- 12:07Mickey Mantle is another one because he hits in any part.
- 12:10And then Lee Thomas with the Red Sox man those guys could really wear us out.
- 12:14Where everybody out here.
- 12:15He ought to get make up a team of those fellows see what happens.
- 12:20In the stretch West Dock.
- 12:22Now the pitch.
- 12:24Little high ball.
- 12:32Where in the night sending Elston Howard at first base the Yankees lead three nothing.
- 12:35They have nine hits the A's have five.
- 12:37It's been a good ball game the entire series has been exciting.
- 12:40We've been beaten twice on the verge of it again.
- 12:45Here's Wesley stretch in the pit.
- 12:47Missed outside two balls and no strike.
- 12:49Stock has not been real effective nor sharp the last three or four times out.
- 12:53And McGahey right now is going to go find out what's cooking.
- 12:56He has not been throwing the ball real hard and he's not been throwing it where he wanted to.
- 13:00So McGahey and Stock and Brian are going to talk.
- 13:04Don't forget now the announcement made a while ago.
- 13:06A new idea.
- 13:08Five thousand more kids.
- 13:09We're going to have a pitching change right now.
- 13:11You can see that coming.
- 13:14Five thousand more kids will get a chance to see the Beatles.
- 13:17Our two dollars general admission tickets going on sale tomorrow by mail only.
- 13:22Send in your two dollars or four dollars or six dollars however many you want.
- 13:25Check a money order payable to the Beatles.
- 13:27Municipal stadium in Kansas City.
- 13:31Only five thousand.
- 13:33Well Modrobowski is going to come on right quick here.
- 13:36Stock gave up a base hit and had nothing on the ball to get to.
- 13:39Glee Boyer two balls and no strikes.
- 13:41Wonder why.
- 13:46Probably had talked about that Molly in the dugout.
- 13:48Wes said I'll try but this time it's don't feel loose or something maybe.
- 13:58At any rate after giving up the single to Alston Howard and two balls and no strikes on Boyer
- 14:02and took him right out of there and brought in the basket.
- 14:09The men and play boy will belong to the basket except if he's one.
- 14:17Hope you're with us tomorrow on our network you might just well drive on in.
- 14:21Enjoy some nice Kansas City hospitality have a meal in one of our fine restaurants.
- 14:26Stay overnight tonight in one of the good hotels or motels in our area.
- 14:42Modrobowski warming up right now.
- 14:58All ready to go.
- 14:59Glee Boyer stands in the count two balls and no strikes.
- 15:02Moose Scowron has hit a home run for the White Sox in the fourth inning with nobody on base that will tie them with Cleveland.
- 15:08Take a look at Moose Scowron with the White Sox and Frank Thomas with the Pills.
- 15:12What a job they've done since being acquired by those clubs.
- 15:14Listen that Scowron's got a chance to break all kind of records.
- 15:17He was with the Yankees two years ago in World Championship ball club.
- 15:20Last year he was with the Dodgers in a championship club.
- 15:23This year he could be on another one.
- 15:25There's a first pitch to Boyer and it's popped up outside third.
- 15:28That Charles is on the way over there.
- 15:29Won't go far enough.
- 15:30It's back in the seat.
- 15:36That'd be the one guy on three World Championship ball clubs.
- 15:39Three different ones in three years.
- 15:41That's never been done before.
- 15:45Playing his chips pretty well I'd say.
- 15:51And he started with Washington.
- 15:54This year, yeah.
- 15:58So he's been all over the place.
- 15:59Last place and first place.
- 16:02Now to two one fifth.
- 16:04He got by Brian, went right through his glove, pass ball, down to second base to his tower.
- 16:08Now they have scored two of their runs on plays like that.
- 16:15Scored a wild pitch.
- 16:24Three balls and a strike.
- 16:27That wasn't a bad strike.
- 16:28Little bit high, went right through Brian.
- 16:35But Drabowski, good stuff on the ball.
- 16:40Three and one.
- 16:49We've had officially on the books three wild pitches here today.
- 16:53Three and one count now.
- 16:55Here's the pitch.
- 16:56Swing and a miss, three and two.
- 17:13Now the pitch.
- 17:14Swung on a miss, he struck him off.
- 17:17One more.
- 17:18Now Roland Sheldon is going to be the hitter.
- 17:21One away, top half of the ninth inning, Elston Howard down at second base.
- 17:29Well, Sheldon gets a hand and well deserved.
- 17:31He's fixed quite a ball game here today.
- 17:34He's gotten by with a few mistakes, but when you're going good, things will happen that way.
- 17:45Oh, ready to pitch.
- 17:46Here it is.
- 17:47High, a ball.
- 17:49Elston Howard down there at second base.
- 17:53Thirteen Yankees have struck out here this afternoon, but they still lead the ball game by a score of three to nothing.
- 18:01Now the pitch.
- 18:03That's a little low.
- 18:05Two and all.
- 18:29Oh, set to pitch again.
- 18:31Here it is.
- 18:33Over the outside corner, strike call, two and all.
- 18:41Score of three to nothing, Yankees lead the A's.
- 18:44We're in the top of the ninth inning.
- 18:46We have the middle of our order, the power in the order coming on in the ninth inning looking ahead.
- 18:50But we've had no power today, really.
- 18:53Here's his pitch.
- 18:55Last ball, strike, two and two.
- 19:24Drabowski with the sign, two balls and two strikes.
- 19:26Here's the pitch.
- 19:27Curve is outside.
- 19:29Three and two.
- 19:48Foul ball.
- 19:54A's have five hits, the Yankees have nine.
- 20:00Three and two, the count on Roland Sheldon, the pitcher up three times, grounded out, struck out twice.
- 20:15Drabowski stretches, steps off the rubber, Howard goes back.
- 20:32You know we hit only about five balls on the ground.
- 20:34There's a strike call.
- 20:36Strike three.
- 20:38Fourteen strikeouts against the Yankees, but they still lead in the ball game.
- 20:45Battle now is Quebec.
- 20:49Oh, you figure, Monty, if you've got such a good enough to strike out 14 Yankees, you've got to be in front in the ball game.
- 20:55Well, we've scored seven runs the last two nights and lost both games.
- 20:58We get out here today and hold them to three and not even in the ball game, really.
- 21:05All right, Drabowski set the pitch.
- 21:07Here it is, taking high, ball one.
- 21:14Cleveland countered, they picked up another run in the fifth inning, they lead to the White Sox now by a score of two to one.
- 21:23Swung on, hit fouled, I'm going to field line, I'll play.
- 21:39Tony Quebec and Mo Drabowski in a battle right now.
- 21:50Mo ready to pitch, here it is.
- 21:52High fly ball outside third.
- 21:54Charles, do they have a chance to catch this one?
- 21:56Nope, it's going to be back in the seats, about four rows.
- 22:03So now it's a ball and two strikes.
- 22:29Drabowski down to get the sign from Bill Bryan, all set to go, takes his foot, fires.
- 22:33Swung on, hit high into the air to left center field, Kapaner is on the run, still going, still going.
- 22:38He should get there, he is there and he's got it.
- 22:42Big high fly ball to left field, so in the ninth inning, no runs on a hit, no errors and a man left.
- 22:47And the scores will go to the last half of the ninth inning, in this one the Yankees three and the A's nothing.
- 22:52Well you already know about American beer, it's an imported beer, you know about Wolvec.
- 23:00Now there's a new third taste in beer, Wolvec beer.
- 23:07Wolvec gives you the full bodied character of the expensive impulse with an American likeness of all its own.
- 23:14A new third taste in beer.
- 23:17What gives Wolvec this new taste?
- 23:19You may give the credit to the hand picked imported hops and fine Hanschen barley malt.
- 23:24You may decide it's the all malt brewing and Wolvec's longer, leisurely aging.
- 23:30Wolvec gives you the non-filling smoothness of American premiums with a substantial taste of the imports.
- 23:37Wolvec beer, possibly the third taste in beer you've been looking for.
- 23:42Find out soon.
- 23:45You'll find the price to your taste too.
- 23:48Wolvec brewed in limited stock to an old world formula by the Peele Ham Brewing Company.
- 24:00Oh, going to the last half of the ninth inning, we'll have the stuff now, we can do it.
- 24:05They've got Ramon and Hamilton in the bullpen.
- 24:08We'll have Causey, Calvito and Gentile up in the last of the ninth inning.
- 24:23Money's up, boy.
- 24:26Here's Causey, he got a triple in the fourth inning and died right at third when they got Calvito, Gentile and Brian out.
- 24:31Try them again, Wayne, let's see.
- 24:36Oh, you won't want to forget now, that doubleheader tomorrow afternoon starts at 130 with Baltimore.
- 24:40Everybody in the park will get a ruler, picture ruler of the age.
- 24:43Here's the pitch to Wayne, a little high ball.
- 24:46And it'll be buffet dinner day.
- 24:48Boy, those meals are going to be, they're not going to be given away right here, you understand.
- 24:51You're not going to have to eat them here.
- 24:53Get a certificate for them or something.
- 24:56So you can go with dying in style.
- 24:58Here's the pitch.
- 25:00There's a strike called.
- 25:02One ball and one strike.
- 25:12Roland Sheldon ready to pitch again.
- 25:14Here it is.
- 25:15A little low, two and one.
- 25:18Scoreboard will follow and have all the information on all the ballgames played.
- 25:23They're all over, but two.
- 25:29Last of the ninth inning.
- 25:31Three or nothing, we've got to get three at least until we go home a little sad.
- 25:35Yankees happy.
- 25:36Here's the pitch.
- 25:38A little high this time and three balls and a strike.
- 25:42We have struck out an amazing 14 Yankees.
- 25:45Still trailing in the ballgame and had to make two mistakes.
- 25:50And nobody has walked.
- 25:51That's the amazing thing about it.
- 25:56Hey, Baltimore might be doing something in the eighth inning.
- 25:58Angels have changed pitchers to leave us in there now.
- 26:01No score so far.
- 26:06Three balls to the strike.
- 26:07Next pitch.
- 26:09Ball four.
- 26:10There's the first base on balls of the ballgame.
- 26:14Make that the second.
- 26:15He walked Ryan back in the second inning.
- 26:17But a field is choice down here.
- 26:19The batter is Calovito now.
- 26:24And there goes Yogi.
- 26:25We're going to have a pitching change right now.
- 26:34Looks like we're going to have a new man in the new Yankee uniform.
- 26:39Now, George, I'll tell you about Raymond.
- 26:42Yesterday, pitching against Chicago in Chicago for Cleveland,
- 26:46he pitched two and a third innings and got bombed for five runs.
- 26:50Here he is now with the Yankees.
- 26:52They've always said put on the Yankee finstripe and it makes a difference.
- 26:55We'll find out here today.
- 26:56I'll tell you, that guy's had some great days, though.
- 26:58He's got real good stuff.
- 27:02And I imagine that he's coming on this mound right now with a great determination
- 27:06to show the Yankees that he belongs on the championship ball club.
- 27:11Roland Sheldon gets a real good round of applause as he leaves.
- 27:14He's done quite a job against us.
- 27:16I think his best effort was in the fourth inning when Tasha led off of that triple,
- 27:19and he got him on two pop flies and a strikeout.
- 27:22Now, Ramus has come on the pitch and he's talking with Elson Howard now about the sign.
- 27:27A Yankee uniform, a little strange for Pedro.
- 27:31Well, he'll face Calvito and Genteel and Bryant, maybe.
- 27:39Calvito and Genteel standing side by side right down below us now.
- 27:42I'd like to really get into one and hit one out of here.
- 27:45Well, Ramus, of course, would like to put out the fire right now.
- 27:48George's record with Cleveland in seven wins and ten losses.
- 27:52He has, at Cleveland, thrown 18 home run balls this year.
- 27:56He has an earned run average of 5.14,
- 27:59which is the highest on the current Yankee staff and one of the highest on the Indian staff.
- 28:04For short work, he just might be the man the Yankees need.
- 28:08We'll know pretty soon because Calvito is standing in right now.
- 28:11Rocky nearly hit a home run in the seventh inning.
- 28:13He hit the top of the fence about a foot from the top, a line drive.
- 28:19A lot of folks may not know that Ramus is with the Yankee ball club.
- 28:22I noticed his little roar when he was announced, but he just joined them today.
- 28:28Really lots of speculation about who the two Yankee players are.
- 28:31He'll go to Cleveland next spring as part of the deal.
- 28:36Calvito ready to face them now. Ramus in his stretch.
- 28:39Here's the pitch. Fastball is high, ball one.
- 28:42He can throw the ball hard.
- 28:55I don't know what the umpire back of a plate Valentine is after somebody or somebody is after him.
- 29:01I don't know. I got a kick out of John Stevens today.
- 29:04He said he's been around the lakes a long. He doesn't have to look to see who talks.
- 29:08He recognizes all the voices.
- 29:10Here's the pitch. Calvito takes it low outside. Ball. Two balls and no strikes.
- 29:17Well, Stevens and Crossetti were after each other.
- 29:19And Crossetti, you can check out. He's like Bertie Tebbott.
- 29:21There's no way he can hide that squeaky voice.
- 29:28All right, Rocky might get one to hit now. Two balls and no strikes.
- 29:30The score is three to nothing. Yankees lead the A's last half of the ninth inning.
- 29:34We have a runner in first base.
- 29:37Pedro Remus on the hill.
- 29:41He stretches, fires. The curve is in there for a strike. Two balls and a strike.
- 29:58Remus looks a little nervous.
- 30:01Can't be, though. He's been around a long time.
- 30:03I'm sure, though, he'd like to look good.
- 30:05First time out. Here's the pitch.
- 30:07Swallowed on a miss. Strike two to a two.
- 30:13I still bet he is, George. I bet he is just as nervous as if he were a kid
- 30:17pitching in his first game. He sure looks like it to me.
- 30:21It's a different thing coming from a tail-in ball club to a Yankee club
- 30:25right in the middle of a pennant being put in a close ball game.
- 30:30Two balls, two strikes.
- 30:32Remus set again. Here she comes.
- 30:36Curveball hit on the ground. A third baseman, Boyer. Off he's glove. Into left field.
- 30:40Off he goes down to second and holds on. Let's see how that one scores.
- 30:46How they score. Base hit.
- 30:50Calabasas will hit one to Boyer. It could have been an easy double play.
- 30:53The ball skipped off Boyer's glove for a base hit.
- 30:55And the batter is Gentile with a chance to tie it up now.
- 30:58Here we've got her tied up. It's great enough that the Yankees lead the A's.
- 31:19Jim Gentile at the plate. Popped out twice and hit into a double play.
- 31:22Calabasas first base. Tosses down on second.
- 31:26Our sixth hit and Calabasas has two of those.
- 31:29Make that three. He has three of those.
- 31:32Here's Remus Fitz. Fastball low inside. Ball one.
- 31:45Brenneth and Hamilton down on the both and are spectating.
- 31:48They're not working. They want to watch.
- 31:56Here's the pitch to Gentile. Swung on and fouled off.
- 31:59One ball and one strike.
- 32:19One and one count. Remus on the hill. Takes a lot of time.
- 32:24Here's the pitch. Gentile swings and misses strike two.
- 32:29Ball and two strikes.
- 32:39Tosses down on second. Canoito on first.
- 32:41Last half of the ninth inning and nobody out. The tying run at the plate.
- 32:44Remus first appearance for the Yankees.
- 32:47We'd like very much to bomb him.
- 32:50In the stretch, Remus. Here's the pitch.
- 32:54Gentile takes it a little low and it's two balls and two strikes.
- 32:57Pretty close.
- 33:07No breeze to help anything now. Just a very gentle breeze.
- 33:10Won't help a ball hit in the air. It's not anything.
- 33:14Remus set. Here's the pitch. Swung on a high fly ball down the left field line.
- 33:20Boyer after the ball. Cannot get it I don't think. It's back in the seat.
- 33:23Not a roll back. Very high pump fly. Two balls and two strikes.
- 33:29Gentile can hit them higher and colder than anybody I ever saw.
- 33:33They get up where the air is cold.
- 33:37Two and two count. On Gentile, Mantle gives him all of left field. Gives him 110 feet of it. Amazing.
- 33:46Two and two count.
- 33:51I think there's about four outfielders out there and each of them would be
- 33:56a little bit more than one.
- 33:59I think there's about four outfielders out there and each of them would be playing a regular position.
- 34:09Add one in left field.
- 34:13I think there's about four outfielders out there and each of them would be playing a regular position.
- 34:25Add one in left field. Now the two-two pitch on the way.
- 34:30Gentile hits it back to the middle. Day 10.
- 34:33Logy's going to score. Calabito on the way to third.
- 34:36And we have the tying run in first base.
- 34:40Gentile singles to center field.
- 34:45Pardable will go in and run for Gentile. He's the tying run right now. The batter will be Bryant.
- 34:53So an infield single by Calabito followed by a good solid smash by Gentile through the middle.
- 34:58I've given us a life here. And except for the two wild pitches and the error,
- 35:04which are a part of baseball nonetheless, we'd have ourselves a snug ballgame.
- 35:07Well, snug anyhow. Calabito went to third. Pardable in first. And the batter Bryant.
- 35:13Bryant can win it right now.
- 35:19Boy, that Yogi's really in deep thought. I've been watching him real closely. He is trying to make up his mind whether to leave this guy in.
- 35:27Ramas ready to pitch to Bryant. One swing and we can win it.
- 35:31Launching ball foul off on the right side. Bryant can do it and Ramas can give up the long ball.
- 35:37Nobody out here. A walk. Exit. Sheldon. Calabito singles. Gentile singles.
- 35:43Calabito singles a bit tainted, but they count just the same.
- 35:483-1 in the ballgame. Last half of the ninth inning. We got a shot at him right here.
- 35:53Ramas set the pitch to Bryant. He looks. He stretches. He pitches. Outside. One ball and one strike.
- 36:09Yogi knows that if he brought in a Hamilton, Doc Edwards would have hit.
- 36:14Or a Lusik. We'd have a right hand hitter in here. So he might as well go the way he is.
- 36:19One ball and one strike. Our only thing here, Bryant can't hit the ball out of the park if he gets the right one to hit and win it for us.
- 36:25Here's the stretch and the pitch. Swung on. A bouncing ball foul to the first baseman.
- 36:29Had that good cut. It's a ball and two strikes now. Nobody out in the last half of the ninth.
- 36:353-1. Yankees lead the A's.
- 36:41Elson Howard out in front of the play to yell something out to Ramas.
- 36:49The Grand Canyon Bill Bryant at the plate right now. One big swing to do it.
- 36:56One ball and two strikes. Ramas stretch and the pitch. Swung on and fouled off. And that hurt Elson.
- 37:05Not to put right out from under him.
- 37:13Elson Howard hurt on that one. A little wobbly right now. Must have hit him on one of his legs. I'm not sure.
- 37:21A ball and two strikes to count on Bryant. Howard was hit on the ankle of the leg of five probably.
- 37:27Have to walk around a bit. Put the ball and two strikes to count on Bryant.
- 37:45Bryant wanted to take a look at the baseball, which Valentine did.
- 37:55One ball, two strikes to count on Big Bear. Tying run at first base and nobody out. Here's the stretch and the pitch on the way.
- 38:04Had a nice swing. Stopped and climbed. Too low. Two balls and two strikes.
- 38:14Gotta be to the third. His run now. It's all important. Hard to believe at first base his is. Believe me.
- 38:20He represents the tying run in the last half of the ninth inning. Enfield double play death. They'll give away the one run to Calabito to try to get the double play.
- 38:30It's a three to one game right now. Here's Ramas ready. Here's the pitch to build. Swung on, hit on the ground to Papatone. Throw down to second. They got one. Throw to first. Got a double play.
- 38:40Exactly what they wanted to do. Bryant bounced into a double play. Papatone to Kubik. Back to Papatone. Calabito scores, but as we just mentioned to you, his run doesn't mean very much.
- 38:53And the batter now is Ed Charles. When you try to visualize what was going to happen, you can just about figure if you hit the ball on Ramas, you're going to hit it on the ground.
- 39:06Three to two ball game right now. We've had our chances and have not been able to capitalize. So there we are. Here's Ed Charles. It's all up to him right now in the last half of the ninth inning.
- 39:17Bryant bounced into a double play. Calabito scored from third with our second run.
- 39:25Here's Ramas in the windup now and the pitch on the way is high inside. Ball on. Three to two Yankees lead the A's. Two out in the last of the ninth.
- 39:37All three of these ball games have been dandies. All year long we've played the Yankees right on their heels. Made our best baseball against them. Now the pitch.
- 39:46High inside and it's two balls and no strikes. Darn near a strike and Charles went down.
- 39:59Oh, we had a real good shot at him. Man oh man.
- 40:04You want to look back. This ball game right now is not tied because we had a man lead off with a triple in the fourth inning.
- 40:10You had Calabito, Gentile and Bryant in a row with nobody out to try to knock him in and nobody could do it. That's right.
- 40:18Do an O count now. Here's the pitch.
- 40:22There's a high fly ball up in the left side of the infield. Two-deckly shortstop getting under. This should do it. He's under now. He's there. He makes the catch and the ball game is over.
- 40:32Well, we can drink it in the pop line. But in the ninth inning it's two runs. On two hits and no errors. We left nobody on. And the final score on this one. The Yankees three and the A's two.
- 40:43Well, to wrap it up, here's the way it goes.
- 40:47The Yankees started it off with a line drive home run by Tony Kubek on the third pitch thrown by Diego Segui in the ball game.
- 40:54He had a home run over the 391 foot sign up on the lamb chop hill to give him a one and up in the lead.
- 40:59The Yankees got another run in the sixth inning when Richardson singled. Went to second on error and error on Nellie Matthews in center field who mishandled the ball.
- 41:08And then he went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Roger Maris. That made it two to nothing.
- 41:13The Yankees got a third run in the eighth inning. Richardson singled his third hit of the game, went to second on a wild pitch and scored.
- 41:20After going to third on a ground out by Maris on a bunt by Mantle to the second baseman, Dick Green. Green took a shot at throwing Richardson out at the plate, but Mantle had bounced the ball too high.
- 41:30And Green couldn't throw him out because Richardson got a real good jump.
- 41:33So they actually scored what proved to be the winning run of the ball game on an infield bunt by Mickey Mantle.
- 41:40The A's had a golden opportunity in the fourth inning when Wayne Causey let off with a triple.
- 41:46But Colabito then popped up. Jen Teal popped up. Both to the infield and Bill Bryan struck out.
- 41:51So if you can't score a guy from third with your three big guns, you're in for a pretty rough day anyway.
- 41:56The A's did manage to rally in the ninth inning when the starting pitcher for the Yankees, Raleigh Sheldon, walked Causey to start the inning.
- 42:02Then Colabito singled. Wayne held on at second. Jen Teal singled through the middle to drive in Causey and Colabito to third.
- 42:09We had the tying runs on base, the winning run at the plate, but Bill Bryan, working to count to 3-2, bounced one to the first base with Pemetone, who started the second of two double plays that he did here today.
- 42:21Then Ed Charles popped up to end the ball game. So the A's now have lost 16 of our last 18 ball games here in our home ballpark.
- 42:28An unbelievable performance, but for our home fans who have been very, very loyal this year, we had 21,372 here today.
- 42:36So we lose to the Yankees 7-9, 7-9, and 2-3, all three ball games here at home.
- 42:42The Yankees moved to within two and a half games of first place, and the White Sox and the Orioles are both in close games.
- 42:48The White Sox have already lost their first game. Actually, the Yankees moved to within two games of first place.
- 42:54As of right now, Baltimore and LA are tied up in the ninth inning, nothing and nothing.
- 42:59So this winds up the Yankee Series in Kansas City for the year. We have the big doubleheader tomorrow against the Baltimore Orioles, starting at 130.
- 43:07It's Picture Ruler Day, and the A's will have Orlando Pena and Bob Meyer pitching against Wally Bunker and Dave McNally.
- 43:15Well, looking down on the field now, the fans are filing out. We see four of the Roger Maris children out there with their daddy.
- 43:21Roger's about to be on television, back to New York City with Jerry Coleman.
- 43:25This is home for Roger. We mentioned one of his little boys, little Roger, is in a Yankee baseball uniform.
- 43:31They're about to be on TV. It's a pretty good sight to see back out in the infield.
- 43:35Well, it's a good series here. We lost all three ball games. We'll have to win all three against the Yankees in New York City a couple of weeks from now in order to even the series with them for the year.

- 48:26All the ball games are over in the National League right now.
- 48:29Dodgers beat the Mets by a score of 4-3. The winner was Harry Reid. Junior Gillum had a home run for the Dodgers.
- 48:34Spalart, the losing pitcher, 9-17. Reid is 1-3. San Francisco, got a run in the eighth inning that beat Philadelphia by a score of 4-3.
- 48:44Juan Marichal won his 17th of the year against six losses.
- 48:47Chris Short was the loser. Now check that, Balsin was the loser in relief, a short and a lock.
- 48:52Harvey Keene and Orlando Cibada had home runs for the Giants.
- 48:55Tony Gonzalez and Johnny Callison for the Fills, but it wasn't enough.

- 49:10Lamasca, the loser, is now 13-11. Tommy Harper and Jimmy Maloney hit home runs.
- 49:15Well, I think that's the first home run that Jimmy's hit in a while. I don't remember him hitting over one other in the major league.
- 49:21St. Louis beat Chicago by a score of 5-4 in 11 innings, switching one across in the last half of the 11.
- 49:26Campbell, Paso, and Cowan homered for Chicago.
- 49:30The winning pitcher was Humphries in the tenth inning for St. Louis.
- 49:33Lenny McDaniel relieving him the second day in a row was the losing pitcher.
- 49:38Pittsburgh beat Houston by a score of 1-0.
- 49:40Vernon Law, his tenth win against Clawbloss, is not a bark, was the losing pitcher in that one.

- 50:46All right, in the American League, Baltimore and Los Angeles, they're playing a single game,
- 50:50Pappas and Lattman, followed by DeLiebe.
- 50:53Lattman has been relieved, but nobody has scored.
- 50:55They're playing now in the top half of the ninth inning.
- 50:57Baltimore can't seem to get any runs, and they'd better hurry.
- 51:00The twins beat Boston 2-1.
- 51:02Thank God they won the ballgame. They had just one hit, too.
- 51:05The winner was Arrego, with help from Worthington.
- 51:08Mandu kept to a one-hitter, but became the loser.
- 51:11Versalegs had a home run, so did Smith.
- 51:13Tigers beat Washington by a score of 9-3.
- 51:16Hank O'Garry, the winner, cracked her with the loser.
- 51:18George Thomas and Don Demeter hit home runs for the Tigers.
- 51:21Cleveland and the White Sox, in a double header.
- 51:24Cleveland won the first game 2-0.
- 51:26Jack Kralik has 11th win against five losses, a four-hit shutout.
- 51:29The loser was Gary Peters. He's now 16-8.
- 51:32In the second game, they're right now in the seventh inning,
- 51:34and Cleveland leading an if by a score of 2-1.
- 51:36A double-dip loss to the White Sox would hurt them.
- 51:38Donovan and Stiching for Cleveland, a double-dip loss to the White Sox.
- 51:41Moose Cowan had a home run in the fourth with nobody on,
- 51:43so the White Sox only run.
- 51:45In the ballgame here, Tony Kubek had a leadoff home run in the first inning.
- 51:49As the Yankees beat Kansas City 3-2.
- 51:52Segui was a losing pitcher. He's 8-14.
- 51:56Roland Sheldon, the winner, is now 4-1, with help from Pedro Rema.
- 52:01Well, that's the baseball story for today.
- 52:03Hope you're with us tomorrow afternoon at 1-30,
- 52:05a double header out here between the Kansas City Tigers and the Yankees.
- 52:08George Bryson, wishing you a pleasant and safe good afternoon.
